- A RIKEN-led team reports that five silicon spin qubits kept accuracy at approximately 99.9% while running together on one shared microwave control line. That matters because giving every qubit its own control system could make larger machines difficult to manage, but today’s result is still about single-qubit operations, and the team found that greater microwave power brought another source of error. Can one shared line help silicon scale without giving back the accuracy it needs? We’ll look at what the experiment establishes, where it stops, and how several other approaches are tackling different bottlenecks. Welcome back to Quickly Quantum, your daily brief on the quantum frontier. It's Monday, October 26, 2026. Let's get into it. Reading a quantum bit usually disturbs the very information you wanted to inspect, and a proposal described by Quantum Physics News aims to get around that by listening to the qubit’s own electrical signal. The study, published in Physical Review B, proposes using an Andreev qubit’s oscillating supercurrent—a current that flows without resistance—as a signal for reconstructing its state, potentially without extra helper qubits called ancillas. The proposal was led by José Carlos Egues, a full professor at the São Carlos Institute of Physics at the University of São Paulo, and Yugui Yao of the School of Physics at the Beijing Institute of Technology. Egues says their approach seeks information from a signal produced by the qubit under study itself, rather than transferring it to an auxiliary qubit. In the proposed system, the Andreev qubit is formed in a quantum dot, a nanoscale structure that confines electrons, in an indium arsenide nanowire connected to superconducting materials. The paper describes theory, not a demonstrated readout device. The supercurrent’s oscillation carries information in the proposed measurement, but the practical test is whether that signal can be extracted amid noise in real superconducting loops. I like the idea’s economy: the qubit supplies the signal, so the proposal may avoid some of the extra measurement machinery. For you, the useful distinction is that this is a route researchers are exploring, not a new capability already running in a processor. From reading the qubit to connecting them, Quantum Zeitgeist reports a simulated entangling gate for Kerr-cat qubits with 99.69% fidelity over fifty nanoseconds, using an asymmetrically threaded SQUID, or ATS, coupler. An entangling gate links qubits so their states can be coordinated. The study also reports a noise bias of nine thousand nine hundred and twenty-two under one hundred kilohertz of photon loss; noise bias describes how strongly the system preserves its preferred protection against certain errors. The story also says the team will need further refinement to maintain demonstrated noise bias and gate accuracy should modest levels of photon leakage occur. So the headline number and the loss condition belong together. We covered a silicon-qubit result earlier this month; this one uses a different qubit design and a simulated gate, so the similar-sounding fidelity figures describe different things. My read is that the interesting part is the effort to preserve the Kerr-cat qubit’s error protection while linking qubits, with the simulation’s loss-free headline fidelity still awaiting the tougher conditions the story itself identifies. Meanwhile, the quantum-safe effort moves from qubit operations to the SIM card in a phone. Quantum Zeitgeist reports that IDEMIA Secure Transactions and KT are testing NIST-standardized and Korean post-quantum cryptographic algorithms on quantum-resistant SIM cards as part of South Korea’s 2026 Post-Quantum Cryptography Pilot Conversion Project. The project, organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency, aims to strengthen defense communications against future cryptographic threats. The article says the SIM approach is designed to handle the higher processing demands of post-quantum algorithms while minimizing changes to devices. It also says the implementation is designed to deliver the first deployment of KpqC 1 algorithms on a smart-card platform in Korea. The pilot’s stated scope reaches beyond SIM cards to smart-unit platforms, PCs, CCTV and video storage systems, drones, ground control systems and 5G networks. That’s a testing project, not a claim of nationwide deployment. For you, the practical point is that preparing communications for future quantum threats involves the hardware that stores credentials as well as the algorithms those devices use. On the national investment front, CTech reports that a report by the Israel Innovation Authority, prepared with the World Economic Forum, ranks Israel fourth globally in private investment in quantum companies. CTech says the report places Israel behind the U.S., the United Kingdom and Canada, up from fifth place based on 2024 data. The number of active quantum companies in Israel has grown from just five in 2019 to more than 20 today, while the sector’s workforce has expanded from approximately 50 people to around 1,000. Those are the report’s figures, with the ranking attached to its stated measure of private investment. The story says the report sees university research, venture capital and national infrastructure as parts of the ecosystem’s growth, and notes that public funding remains relatively limited by international standards. And on the question of what a quantum machine is good at, Quantum Zeitgeist reports a D-Wave Advantage processor found ground states more often than classical simulated annealing in an N=160 spin instance. A ground state is the lowest-energy solution. The reported probabilities were 0.869 for the processor and 0.519 for classical simulated annealing, while the processor showed greater deviation from uniform sampling, meaning it did a less even job of exploring equally valid solutions. The study used an Ising ring, a network of interacting magnets, with instances embedded up to 162 logical spins. Quantum Zeitgeist also reports that pausing during the anneal raised the ground-state hit probability from 0.42 to 0.86 without improving how evenly those solutions were distributed. The article’s central distinction is useful: finding a valid answer more often doesn’t mean sampling all valid answers fairly. I think this is a better benchmark conversation than a single win-or-lose headline, because the task has two different measures and the device performs differently on them. The result is a comparison on this study’s chosen problem, not a general claim about every optimization task. That's the rest of today's quantum news. Now, the story I want to slow down for. The result is about whether silicon qubits can share control wiring and still perform accurately at the same time. Silicon spin qubits store information in the spin of individual electrons, and using silicon connects the research to established semiconductor manufacturing methods. ScienceDaily reports that researchers at RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science and collaborators demonstrated control of five silicon spin qubits connected to one shared microwave line. Their study was published in Nature Physics, and the team reports approximately 99.9% accuracy when all five qubits were controlled at once. Tested individually, each qubit achieved single-qubit gate fidelity well above 99.99%, with the highest approaching 99.999%. Keep those operating conditions distinct: the individually tested qubits had the higher figures, while the five-qubit simultaneous result was approximately 99.9%. Fidelity means how closely a quantum operation matches its intended result. The team also reports fidelity above 99.99% when as many as three qubits operated simultaneously. Why does the shared line matter? Microwave signals control the electron spins, and controlling several qubits together can create effects that interfere with the intended operation. ScienceDaily says the researchers traced much of this simultaneous-operation problem to the AC Stark shift, a change in a qubit’s effective energy levels caused by the microwave control signals. That shift changes the phase of the quantum state, which can throw off the operation. The team addressed those unwanted phase shifts with pairwise calibration—calibrating between pairs of qubits rather than separately for every possible combination—and combined that technique with an improved device design and carefully adjusted microwave pulses. Yi-Hsien Wu, the first author who carried out the experiments as part of his PhD research, explains: “Rather than requiring an entirely separate calibration procedure for every possible combination of qubits, our method uses calibrations between pairs of qubits to compensate for the unwanted phase shifts.” The concrete result is five qubits running together on a shared line at approximately 99.9% accuracy. That gives us a direct answer to the wiring question at the scale they tested. Leon Camenzind, a RIKEN research scientist and co-first author who supervised the experiments, says: “This shows that high-fidelity control can be maintained even when several qubits are operated at the same time and represents an important step toward scaling up silicon-based quantum processors.” But the calibration didn’t remove every source of error. ScienceDaily says the remaining loss of accuracy was linked to drive-induced decoherence, the loss of the quantum coherence needed for reliable operations, caused here by the greater microwave power required to operate multiple qubits simultaneously. Camenzind says, “This is a limitation, but further improvements to device design could help mitigate this source of error.” And the larger goal remains demanding: building practical, large quantum computers will require scientists to control many qubits simultaneously while keeping errors to a minimum. That distinction matters because the result is easy to misread as a general answer to scaling. It answers a narrower, important question: can several silicon spin qubits share a microwave control line without a large loss of accuracy in the tested operations? The team’s results say yes, with the five-qubit figure at approximately 99.9%, and with the individual and three-qubit results separately reported above 99.99%. I think the engineering contribution is the combination: pairwise calibration handles unwanted phase shifts, while device design and pulse adjustments help the shared-control arrangement work. The point isn’t just a good fidelity figure; it’s that the team identifies a specific source of simultaneous-operation error and gives a method for correcting it. That makes this more informative than a headline number by itself. I’m less certain about how far the approach carries, because the story’s evidence is five qubits and the team identifies drive-induced decoherence as a remaining limit. If the need for greater microwave power keeps eroding performance as more qubits are controlled together, the wiring advantage would have to be weighed against that loss. The report says improved device design could help, but that’s a prospect, not an outcome already shown. There’s also a useful way to think about the stakes without turning this into a claim about a finished machine: shared control lines could make larger processors more practical to manage, while preserving accuracy is essential for reliable calculations. The study supports that direction on a small array, and the difference between a promising control method and a useful large processor is still the difficult work of carrying the result forward. Time for the Hype Check. I give it a seven out of ten for substance: the strongest point against a higher score is that this is five-qubit single-qubit control with remaining decoherence, while the measured result is a concrete shared-line demonstration with separately reported accuracy for one, three and five qubits. The stake is whether shared control can keep accuracy high enough as silicon processors grow; today, the five-qubit result advances that case, and the unresolved question is how the same approach performs as the system gets larger.
