- 0:09faced the Brooklyn Dodgers on Saturday afternoon,
- 0:12April 22nd. At Ebbets Field during the first
- 0:15week of the 1950 baseball season, the Giants,
- 0:18managed by Leo De Rocher in his second full year
- 0:21as skipper, after taking over from Mel Ott midway
- 0:24through the 1948 season, had been an average
- 0:27team. never finishing above fifth place in the
- 0:30National League for nearly a decade. The Brooklyn
- 0:33Dodgers were also once managed by Leo Durocher
- 0:35during the 1940s, but had been led by Bert Schotten
- 0:39since 1948. This change in leadership occurred
- 0:42after a deal was negotiated between Dodgers owner
- 0:45Branch Rickey and New York Giants owner Horace
- 0:48Stoneham, allowing Durocher to be released from
- 0:51his Brooklyn contract to take over the Giants.
- 0:54In this early season game, The Giants sent Jack
- 0:57Kramer to the mound to face Dan Bankhead, who
- 0:59was notably the first African -American pitcher
- 1:02in the major leagues. This audio recording is
- 1:04from the Dodgers radio broadcast featuring announcers
- 1:07Red Barber and Connie Desmond. Join us now for
- 1:32another Brooklyn ball game, brought to you by
- 1:34your favorite Post Serials and their terrific
- 1:37new teammate, Post Sugarcrisp. Yes sir, Post
- 1:40is back to bring you the Dodgers again as they
- 1:43take on the New York Giants in the second of
- 1:45this three game series here at Ebbets Field,
- 1:47Brooklyn, USA. This is the old redhead, Red Barber,
- 1:52and Connie Dessin will be along in the middle
- 1:54of the ball game and between us, we'll take care
- 1:56of the play -by -play assignment. and your seat
- 1:58behind home plate today. No matter whereabouts
- 2:01in the United States you are, your seat is reserved
- 2:04thanks to your loyalty to Post cereals and your
- 2:08all -out cheers for sensational new Post sugar
- 2:10crisps. So with Post as your host, let's look
- 2:14around here in Everett Field and see what's on
- 2:15the docks. Public address announcer Tex Rickards
- 2:18is busily going down the respective batting orders
- 2:21and as you can gather by the cheers, this locale
- 2:24being Brooklyn, he's... giving the Brooklyn batters.
- 2:28The starting pitchers will be Jack Kramer, the
- 2:31veteran right -hander who was sold by the Boston
- 2:33Red Sox during the winter to the New York Giants.
- 2:35Kramer will be making his debut in the National
- 2:37League. Jack Kramer will start for Leo DeRosha's
- 2:41Giants. And Dan Bankhead, the first Negro pitcher
- 2:45in the history of the major leagues, will get
- 2:47his first starting assignment for the Dodgers.
- 2:49And Bankhead was up and broke the ice a couple
- 2:52of years ago at Brooklyn. He only got in four
- 2:54games, and on every occasion was a relief pitcher.
- 2:56So this is his major league starting debut, and
- 3:00so thus it's a big afternoon for both of these
- 3:02right -handers. Kramer, last year with the Red
- 3:05Sox, won six and lost eight. He had a big year
- 3:08with Joe McCarthy, if you'll recall, in 48 when
- 3:12he won 18 and lost five. In 44 with the Browns,
- 3:15Kramer won 17 and lost 13. That was the year
- 3:17the Browns went for their only pennant. And in
- 3:19the World Series against the Cardinals, he had
- 3:21a win and was not defeated. Bankhead last year
- 3:24was at Brooklyn's Montreal farm and he won 20
- 3:28and lost six. Each of these pitches has pitched
- 3:32impressively this spring and that explains why
- 3:34they are getting the starting assignments. This
- 3:37clear sunshiny, although it is a cool Saturday
- 3:39afternoon here at Brooklyn. Now for the invading
- 3:42Giants and it's always a hot time in Brooklyn
- 3:46when the Giants come over. It's always a hot
- 3:48time whenever these two clubs tangle anywhere.
- 3:50Ed Stanky is leading off for the Giants. Whitey
- 3:54Lockman hits number two in left field. Third
- 4:00baseman Henry Thompson is batting third for New
- 4:04York. Rookie Don Mueller, M -U -E -L -L -E -R,
- 4:08is in right field. Center fielder Bobby Thompson.
- 4:11There are two Thomsons. Center fielder does not
- 4:14spell his name with a P in it. This is T -H -O
- 4:16-M -S -O -N. Bobby Thompson in center. Alvin
- 4:19Dogg, who came to the Giants along with Stanky
- 4:21from the Braves and that big one of the Eel.
- 4:22Dogg is at short. Jack Hoshman, the rookie first
- 4:26baseman, hits seven. Wes Westrom is catching
- 4:29and Kramer is the pitcher. The umpires have just
- 4:31come out and there's a conference at home played
- 4:33between the three wearers of the Blue Surge suits.
- 4:36Groundkeeper Ed Durham. Alvin Dogg bringing up
- 4:38the batting card for the Giants and Captain Peewee
- 4:40Reese bringing up the batting order for the Dodgers.
- 4:42And the Brooklyn batting order that Reese has
- 4:43on his card is in this wire. Reese himself leading
- 4:47off at short. George Schuba is in left field.
- 4:53Jim Russell is in center field. Duke Snider is
- 4:55the regular center fielder, but he has a heavy
- 4:57cold, which has given him some trouble. He missed
- 4:59the exhibition games of last weekend at the stadium
- 5:02with the Yankees because of this same malady.
- 5:05So Russell is in center. Russell played left
- 5:07yesterday. His first game was a Dodger. They
- 5:09got him from the Braves during the winter. And
- 5:11he had a home run and a triple. Jackie Robinson.
- 5:15a defending batting champion in the league's
- 5:17most valuable player. Robinson at second is hitting
- 5:19fourth for the Dodgers. Then comes Carl Forello
- 5:22in right field. Hodges, the first baseman, is
- 5:25batting sixth. Rookie Bobby Morgan, who is hitting
- 5:28very well, hits safely in all three games. Morgan
- 5:32at third. Roy Campanella, who was grand slam
- 5:34home run in the third inning, sunk the Giants
- 5:36beyond hope yesterday. Campanella catching. And
- 5:40Dan Bankhead is the pitcher. The umpires, Douglas...
- 5:44Scotty Robb is back at the plate. It's R -O -B
- 5:48-B. Al Pollock and Augie Donatelli will be on
- 5:54the bassist. And now Miss Gooding will play and
- 5:57sing the National Anthem. That's how they feel
- 7:44about it here at Evans Field. The Dodgers have
- 7:47taken the field. Dan Bankhead, slender, loose
- 7:50-jointed right -hander. Roy Campanella, stocky
- 7:52catcher, that's the battery. Big Gil Hodges at
- 7:55first base. Jackie Robinson at second. Captain
- 7:58Peewee Reese at short. And rookie Bob Morgan
- 8:01is at third. Billy Cox, who might have started
- 8:06at third base, except he hurt his back, rejoined
- 8:07the club yesterday and is recovering all right.
- 8:10In left field, George Schubert, who's having
- 8:12his second real chance with the Dodgers. Schubert
- 8:17in left. In center field, Jim Russell, who's
- 8:19turned out to be a very valuable player. Came
- 8:21to the Dodgers in that Sam Jethro deal with the
- 8:23Braves. And in right field, it is Carl Ferrello
- 8:26from Reading, Pennsylvania, and they call him
- 8:28the Reading Rifle. Now Ed Stanky is first up
- 8:31for the Braves. With a crouch, right hand hitter,
- 8:33bank hits first pitch. Fast ball high inside
- 8:35for ball one. Stanky, this young season. Ball
- 8:39of the Giants has three hits out of 12 at bats.
- 8:45He's stocky, small, bends at the knees. I feel
- 8:48a little twad left. Bankhead pitches low outside
- 8:50for ball two. Sankey is one of the best judges
- 8:53in all baseball of a pitched ball. He holds a
- 8:56National League racket for bases on balls. And
- 8:58nobody gave him any deliberate walks because
- 9:00he was such an awesome hitter. He just earned
- 9:02those walks. Bankhead throws, outside with a
- 9:06curve, and he's behind ball three. No balls,
- 9:10no strikes. This is a momentous occasion for
- 9:14Bankhead. Trying to make the Brooklyn club. It's
- 9:20his first start in a major league game. Leo de
- 9:23Rocha, the Giants manager, his own third base
- 9:25coach, Freddie Fitzsimmons, is coaching it first.
- 9:28Now the three -all pitch. Ball for orange, thank
- 9:31you, walks, closes that away. And off the first
- 9:33deep trot, so Bankhead walks the first many pitches
- 9:35too without throwing him a strike. And that's
- 9:38a bit of a danger sign. And here's Robinson coming
- 9:40in from second base. Campanella goes out to the
- 9:42mound. Post Cereals, very happy to be your host.
- 9:47B -O -S -T, Post. And the newest of the Post
- 9:49Cereals is Sugar Crisp. Grand cereal and a swell
- 9:55snack. And it's the hottest thing that's come
- 9:57down the road. Look for them in the cellophane
- 10:00bag at your friend the grocer's here. And in
- 10:03addition to the words, Post and Sugar Crisp.
- 10:05You'll notice there are three little honey bears
- 10:07right on the front. Bankhead at Montreal last
- 10:12year walked about as many fellas as he struck
- 10:14out. He walked 170 and he struck out 176. Patti
- 10:17Lachman, left hand hitter for the Giants batting
- 10:19at 333. Takes a call strike. Bankhead came down
- 10:23with a change. He slowed up one and headed over.
- 10:26Campanella is most apt to make a pitch to use
- 10:28a change of ball when he is getting wild, otherwise
- 10:30he makes him stay away from the fast ball. Hodges
- 10:33holding first against Stanky, who's not too fast
- 10:35a runner. The Brooklyn infield halfway up, ready
- 10:37to go either way. On a ground hit ball or a bunt.
- 10:41Hatfield toward right, Lachman pulls. Fast curve,
- 10:43swing on a fly ball out into center. Right to
- 10:45Russell, who comes in, he can't get it. He gets
- 10:47away from the ball, suddenly sunk. Stanky goes
- 10:49onto second base and holds on. Russell seemed
- 10:51to have that ball right there up against his
- 10:53belt buckle. He just stood waiting. We said it
- 10:56was right after Russell, then suddenly at the
- 10:57last moment, he ran in a step and go for the
- 11:00ball and had to trap it. The ball must have suddenly
- 11:04sunk. The wind is not blowing in. The wind is
- 11:07blowing out. So it wasn't a question of the wind
- 11:09holding up the ball. It was a question of that
- 11:11ball probably sinking. Sometimes those line drives
- 11:13do that. So it is to be scored as a base hit.
- 11:17So there's a break for New York. Break against
- 11:20Bankhead. And let's see now whether the drives
- 11:21can export this opening or just what happens.
- 11:24Yesterday's ball game, the first meeting of these
- 11:26two clubs. They dodged and hammered the Giants
- 11:28early and often and beat them 8 to 1. The Giants
- 11:31have lost all three of their games this year.
- 11:33The Dodgers, after losing their first game with
- 11:35Philadelphia, won the next two. So, Giants at
- 11:38first and second, and Henry Thompson, the Negro
- 11:41third baseman for the Giants, who broke the ice
- 11:44for the Polo Grounders. Left -hand hitter is
- 11:46up and takes a fast polo inside of Denise. Ball
- 11:49one. One ball, no strikes. Down to the Brooklyn
- 11:52bullpen, a fellow who wears number 15 by deliberate
- 11:55design. Ralph Branca is warming up. Big towering
- 11:58right -hander warming up with Sam Maron. The
- 12:00Dodgers bullpen catcher. Caponello goes out to
- 12:04the mound again to talk to Bankhead. Dom's in
- 12:08trouble. He put himself in trouble by walking
- 12:10Stanky without throwing a strike and then something
- 12:12happened to that line drive and Russell, who
- 12:15is a sure judge of a ball, didn't come up with
- 12:17it. He's standing there waiting, competently.
- 12:201 -0 pitch. Quick curve in there for a tall strike.
- 12:24One ball, one strike. The Dodger infield has
- 12:26to be ready for the bunt if that's the way Leo
- 12:28wants to play it. That of Thompson. This is T
- 12:34-H -O -M -P -S -O -N, Henry Thompson, left hand
- 12:36hitting third baseman. Getting a 375, three for
- 12:40eight this year. In a crouch. The pitch. He takes
- 12:44a curve. High inside for ball two. Two balls,
- 12:49one strike. Bankhead. Born in Empire, Alabama.
- 12:57Makes his home nine Memphis, Tennessee. 6 '1",
- 12:59185 pounds. And probably the loosest looking
- 13:02fellow on the mound you ever saw. In position.
- 13:05Pitches. Fastball swung on and fouled back. So
- 13:07the Giants have refused to go for the buck. And
- 13:09the count is now two and two. Two balls, two
- 13:11strikes. DeRosha coaching a third holler. All
- 13:16right, Henry. So we have action at Ebbets Field,
- 13:20Brooklyn. And there's always action here. Broadcasters
- 13:26toward right. Groundkeeper Ed Durham. Under the
- 13:30supervision of business manager Jack Collins,
- 13:32got this ball parked manicured to where it looks
- 13:33like you could eat off of it any place you wanted
- 13:36to. Henry Thompson steps out to get Tyler Wade.
- 13:40Two balls, two strikes, no score. The Giants
- 13:42threatening here in the top of the first inning
- 13:44at Ebbets Hill. Bankhead in position, Henry Thompson
- 13:48crouches, severe crouch, left -hand hitter. Right
- 13:51-hander, deals, curve, tip, and foul. And it's
- 13:54good deal still. Campanella was fighting it like
- 13:57it was a mad bumblebee trying to hold it. But
- 13:59he couldn't do it. Catchers are not expected
- 14:02to hold foul tips. There's never any other charge
- 14:04against him. Any criticism leveled if they do
- 14:07not hold them. If they do hold them, fine. If
- 14:10they don't, well, that's the way it goes. Now
- 14:13let's see. Bankhead coming to a stop. Looks at
- 14:20second. Beals curve way outside the ball three.
- 14:24He's a long way away from the plate on that one.
- 14:26Three balls, two strikes. And visit your and
- 14:29gum out there He doesn't look like he weighs
- 14:33185 he is so bony and angular and he has a tremendously
- 14:39loose hip motion Thank you at second Lachlan
- 14:43at first. Thank you. Not too fast a second Lachlan
- 14:46can fly at first in field and double play death
- 14:49In two count they might be running. Let's see.
- 14:52They pitch they don't go and that's a curveball
- 14:54right for you It's up against the wall for an
- 14:57extra nice hit Pace it on the bound. Senk is
- 14:59coming around third toward the plate and scores
- 15:01on the single and in the third goes Loughlin.
- 15:03And it is 1 -0 New York. And DeRosha was right
- 15:05when he didn't bunt Thompson when he produced
- 15:08that base hit. So the Giants have gone out in
- 15:10front and lead 1 -0. Have men at first and third
- 15:13and nobody up. Looks like you're getting here
- 15:16just in time because the pot is bubbling. Here
- 15:20at Brooklyn. Here at Brooklyn. A .B. Chandler
- 15:31is just coming in the ballpark now with President
- 15:33Branch Rickey and they're taking a box down by
- 15:36the Brooklyn dugout. You can see that also from
- 15:38the commission staff is Dick Butler. Minutes
- 15:43manager Jack Collins down there with them. The
- 15:46commissioner was at Yankee Stadium yesterday.
- 15:50Eversfield today. Bankhead making his first major
- 15:53league start. Got nobody out. Pitching to his
- 15:57fourth hitter. delivers Kerrball's one on hit
- 16:00down to Robinson who's up for the first to reach
- 16:02the second run out for the first double play
- 16:04and Marklin scores the third and it's a 2 -0
- 16:07win for the Giants. Simula bangs into a BP. It's
- 16:13the first double play but the Dodgers have come
- 16:15up against the Giants in their third double play
- 16:17of the year. Marklin of course cruised in from
- 16:22third on the double play so the Giants have two
- 16:24runs in. Under the present scoring rules, Mueller
- 16:26cannot be credited with an RBI, because the run
- 16:29scored him, he was banging into an infield twin,
- 16:31killing. Robinson to Reese and on to Hodges.
- 16:37So to nothing, favor New York. Both runs earned,
- 16:40and here is Bobby Thompson. Right hand hitting
- 16:43very tall center fielder. Bankhead delivers,
- 16:46the curve's going on, it's beaten down to the
- 16:47big foul. Strike one. This kid, Bobby Thompson,
- 16:52was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He's come a long
- 16:56way, hasn't he? Horace, an infant, his family
- 16:58moved to Staten Island, one of the five boroughs
- 17:00in New York, and he came up with the Giants rather
- 17:03than with the Dodgers. He never was a Dodger
- 17:05player. Wonderful ballplayer. Hit .309 for the
- 17:09Giants last year, 6 '2", 190 pounds. Backhand
- 17:12pitches, fastball swung on, foul back. No balls,
- 17:17two strikes. Leo de Rocha will tell you that
- 17:21he believes... that this fellow up at the plate,
- 17:24his center fielder, Bobby Thompson, T -H -O -M
- 17:26-S -O -N, can, in 100 yards, outrun anybody in
- 17:31baseball. He says he doesn't know whether Thompson
- 17:35can outrun Jethro of the Braves at 60 yards,
- 17:37but he knows he can at 100. Braves he can. This
- 17:40fellow can fly. Long stride. Pitch. Strike three.
- 17:44That's going over. So Bankett settles down. That's
- 17:46looking to be right there in the pickle, that.
- 17:49Two runs for the Giants. On two hits, the double
- 17:53play finally turned the tide. So it's 2 -0 in
- 17:56favor of the Giants, and the Dodgers are coming
- 17:57in for their first licks for the afternoon. And
- 18:00look here, friends, here's just a simple point
- 18:04-blank question from the old redhead to all of
- 18:06you. Do you eat cornflakes? Chances are you do.
- 18:11But look, here's the important thing. There's
- 18:14a difference in cornflakes, a real difference.
- 18:18You up and try our post -toasters, and you'll
- 18:20see just what we mean. Yes, sir, there's a difference
- 18:23in corn flakes, and it's post -toasting that
- 18:25makes that difference. Now once you eat them,
- 18:27you'll agree. Post -toasters are extra crisp,
- 18:31extra delicious, better in every way. Post -toasters
- 18:35are fresher too, fresher than ever before. Now
- 18:38so fresh that they taste just toasted. So next
- 18:42time that you stop by Joe the Grocer's, don't
- 18:44ask for corn flakes, ask for post -toasters,
- 18:48the better corn flakes. That's Guaranteed Fresh
- 18:51Post Hostess, one of the famous post -serials.
- 18:54Try them all here. This is a rather historic
- 18:59broadcast, as we told you at the beginning, and
- 19:03the post -serial folks are very happy to make
- 19:05it possible, working in cooperation with the
- 19:08Brooklyn Ball Club and WMGM, which is a station
- 19:13that for eight years has been doing all the Brooklyn
- 19:15games in New York, because today... stations
- 19:19of the Columbia Broadcasting System are joining
- 19:21in too, with the coverage outside of New York.
- 19:24And so it is coast -to -coast coverage of baseball's
- 19:26most colorful, dynamic team, the Dodgers. And
- 19:29we are glad to have you along. You come with
- 19:31us all the home Saturdays at Brooklyners at Evans
- 19:34Field. And you see on your baseball schedules
- 19:38that the Dodgers are gonna be in Brooklyn. And
- 19:44we're gonna be with you. You're gonna help us
- 19:50be there too by the fact that you tell Joe the
- 19:53grocer that you want to post -toast it. Or any
- 19:58of the post -cereals. Or the newest, the sugar
- 20:00cricks. Okay, here we go with Captain Peewee
- 20:04Reese and Jack Kramer making his first start
- 20:07in the National League. Comes down with a little
- 20:09strike over the plate. Kramer's a trim looking
- 20:12right -hander. He throws a fastball, throws slow
- 20:17curves. Good control. Reese missed three for
- 20:2414. Getting a 2 -14 right now. Kramer pumps.
- 20:31Kicks, throws. There's a shot there. Rolls the
- 20:34ball straight to K -R -A -M -E -R. Jack Kramer.
- 20:53Atfield straight to short left. Reese swings
- 20:55from the end. Swings and there's a high pop fly
- 20:57in the short left center. Left fielder Lachman's
- 20:59in. Unrich. Unrich. And he takes it for number
- 21:02one. Go ahead one up and one's on for Brooklyn.
- 21:04Last for the first hitting. The Giants leading
- 21:08two to nothing. And this is baseball's most heated
- 21:10rivalry. Giants and the Dodgers. And the Roasters
- 21:14and the Giants trying so hard to win their first.
- 21:16They've been under very heavy criticism for losing
- 21:19their first three. especially in the face of
- 21:21that big deal that was made with the Boston Braves
- 21:23during the winter. You know, when Stanky and
- 21:26Dock came from Boston to New York, and the Giants
- 21:28sent Sid Gordon, Willard Marshall, Buddy Carr,
- 21:31and Sam Webb to the Braves. And then the first
- 21:33two games of the season, the Braves played the
- 21:35Polo Grounds, won them both. And in the second
- 21:36game, Gordon hit two home runs, won a Grand Slammer.
- 21:40Boy, that's really having a boomerang come back,
- 21:42hits right between the eyes. But as Leo said
- 21:44today, it's a long season. George Schuba, left
- 21:47-hand hitter, takes a high outside fastball.
- 21:50Or one. Chuba has one break. He's being given
- 21:54another chance. At the around toward right, right
- 21:59side of the infield is back. It's a bright sun
- 22:03and a bright sky. Pitch. Little curve right over
- 22:15for a false strike. Kramer's one of these fellows
- 22:17with pumps and pumps and hitches and tries to
- 22:19catch you between swings. Pitches a great deal
- 22:22of the style of feature role by the admission
- 22:26of Kramer's new manager, DeRosha. Meldham Stock
- 22:29is the Brooklyn third base coach. Jake Fittler,
- 22:33old Sugarfoot Jake. This is his 56th birthday.
- 22:36Fittler coaches his first. Weston gives the sign.
- 22:39Kramer pitches and Schuber takes a fastball low
- 22:42outside for a ball two. Kramer kicked on it,
- 22:47that's where the pitch was and played up a lob
- 22:49motion outside. Third baseman Henry Thompson
- 22:53is about three full steps over toward short.
- 22:57Short step dark is almost directly behind the
- 22:59bag. The outfield is one drastically in the right
- 23:01and they are playing Schubert wider than I've
- 23:03seen any ball club play in the full toward right
- 23:05field. In other words, straightaway left field
- 23:08is wide open and inside third base it's wide
- 23:10open. Sugar takes a curve over good for a second
- 23:13strike to undo. Two balls, two strikes. They're
- 23:17really ganged up in the right field on this fellow.
- 23:23Pitler hollering down from first base. Come on,
- 23:25George, you're the fella. Jack Framer with one
- 23:30out, pitching his first inning in the National
- 23:33League. He's fidgeting around out there on the
- 23:37mound. There's nobody on base. Pumped once. Pumps
- 23:40twice, right -handed kicks, high throws, fastball
- 23:42swirled off, real deep on the right center fielder,
- 23:45back goes Thompson way back in the corner, and
- 23:46makes the catch, 390 feet away in the right center
- 23:50fielder corner. First fielder, tagged it, but
- 23:52it's just out on the two. Two man gone, and Jim
- 23:56Russell trying his second game as a Dodger. He's
- 24:02a switch hitter, or some people say a turnaround
- 24:04hitter, and he's batting left -handed against
- 24:07right -handed Kramer. Russell went two for four
- 24:10yesterday. He hit a home run and he hit a triple.
- 24:14And for every home run that is hit in a Brooklyn
- 24:16ball game or every shutout pitch, there is an
- 24:18award of a case of post sugarcrisp. So Russell
- 24:22collected yesterday. The pitch, fastball on the
- 24:29outside. Ball one. Famous monkeys around, pitches
- 24:33here, pitches there. Al Balik, the first baseman,
- 24:38probably just noticed that the bag had been kicked
- 24:39a little bit out into foul ground, so he runs
- 24:41up there and kicks it back into fair. Attention
- 24:47to small details, very important. I'm prying
- 24:49anything else. Slow curve outside to Russell,
- 24:52and it is ball two. Two balls, no strikes. Dark
- 24:57is coming in from short at his talking to Kramer.
- 25:00Apparently Dark must have noticed that Kramer
- 25:02has kicked on a couple of decisions. plate maybe
- 25:05saying something to him. Johnson on top two to
- 25:12nothing. He got two runs off Dan Bankhead right
- 25:15at the bell. Bankhead began his own difficulties
- 25:18by walking Stanky. That's the first rule in the
- 25:21book of pitches. Don't walk him and certainly
- 25:23don't walk that first. Two -nothing pitch. Curve
- 25:30outside the ball three. Three balls and a strike.
- 25:35In case you didn't join us on this broadcast,
- 25:37we're the best buskers. It's post -serials. Thank
- 25:39you, Walk. Went to second base as Lockman's line
- 25:43driver apparently suddenly sank in front of Russell.
- 25:45Russell seemed to have it caught all the way
- 25:46and then dove for it and too late. Thompson single
- 25:50off the right through wall again. One mule hit
- 25:51him to a double play and the second run came
- 25:52over. There's a call strike for Russell on the
- 25:54outside. Fine crowd here at Ebbets Field and
- 25:58the Dodgers and Johnson will be here tomorrow.
- 26:01Game time tomorrow 2 o 'clock and business manager
- 26:04Collins told us before today's game. There are
- 26:0614 ,000 seats of all kinds that will be available
- 26:08on sale at the park tomorrow when the gates are
- 26:11open around noon. 3 -1 pitch, ball four and Russell
- 26:15becomes the post guard runner with a base on
- 26:17ball. Jackie Robinson who is hitting so far with
- 26:24six hits for 11 at bat at 5 .44 the defending
- 26:28batting champion. Presented by Fort Prick yesterday,
- 26:33with a silver replica of a baseball bat sent
- 26:38by the Louisville Slugger people. The Hillary
- 26:41Memorial bat, emblematic of winning the batting
- 26:44title last year. It was also voted the league's
- 26:46most valuable player. Robinson's weight now is
- 26:48208 pounds. He's in fine shape. Playing him straight
- 26:53away. Wind is blowing to right field. Curve is
- 26:57good on the outside for a false strike. Jack,
- 27:00I think, is a little unhappy about it, but he
- 27:02doesn't turn around. For the Giants, the veteran
- 27:06Jack Cramer, making his first National League
- 27:08appearance. He was formerly over there in the
- 27:10American League with the Browns and the Red Sox.
- 27:12Wes Westrom is catching. Jack Hoshman at first.
- 27:16Russell is leading off at that point. Two out.
- 27:19Stanky at second. Alvin Dock at short. The third
- 27:21baseman is Henry Thompson. Cramer in position.
- 27:24Beals curve high. And it is all one. It was very
- 27:28high. One ball went right. In left field for
- 27:31New York, Buddy Lachlan. The center fielder is
- 27:34Bobby Thompson. And the right fielder is Don
- 27:37Mueller. Hit the umpires again. It is Doug, Scotty
- 27:42Robb, back of the plate. Al Balik is at first
- 27:46base. And Donatelli, rookie National League umpire,
- 27:48this is his second series in the National League,
- 27:50is at second. Kramer coming down to his set position.
- 27:58Delivers, Robinson swings, and the ball is a
- 28:00bit sneaky. Take a little bit off of it. One
- 28:05ball, two strikes. The crowd's a little quiet
- 28:14for the moment, but they don't stay quiet at
- 28:15Brooklyn Long. Robinson holding it club down
- 28:23by the end. Strong right hand hitter. George
- 28:30Sissler has helped him a great deal to become
- 28:31the fine batter that he is. One and two pitch.
- 28:36Curve outside. Jack takes it for a ball two.
- 28:41Two balls, two strikes. Freeman, in no hurry
- 28:48at all, back to the mound, put him in the rosin
- 28:51bag. Two and two. Crackle, ready to get up and
- 29:07go. It's as quick as you can say, sugar crisp,
- 29:10and the thing happens, he's two out. Pitch, curve,
- 29:13strong hit, down ball, take away from Sankey.
- 29:15Goes up with it, the throw goes over to first,
- 29:17Robinson's out by two running steps. Sankey to
- 29:19Hoshman, and that's all for the last of the first
- 29:21inning. There's really nothing to it when you
- 29:23add it up. So the end of the first inning. Two
- 29:27runs, they're both Aaron, two hits to no errors
- 29:29for the Giants. For the Dodgers, no runs, no
- 29:32hits to no errors. Now let's see what's on the
- 29:35post scoreboard, and then we'll see about identifying
- 29:37the stations, so let's see. In the National League,
- 29:40nothing yet on the Cardinals and the Cubs. Philadelphia
- 29:44playing at Boston, Kurt Simmons will go for the
- 29:46Phillies, and Warren Spahn, top -winning left
- 29:48-hander in the league last year, will go for
- 29:50the Braves. Spahn making a second start, but
- 29:52he beat the Giants opening day. Cincinnati's
- 29:55at Pittsburgh, and at the end of the first inning
- 29:56it is 3 -0 in favor of the Pirates. Hepke for
- 29:58Cincinnati and Chesney's for Pittsburgh. In the
- 30:00American League, Washington is playing New York
- 30:03at the stadium, Steve Nagy for Washington, and
- 30:05Bob Porterfield starting for the Yankees. Staub
- 30:08is starting for the Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia
- 30:10against Alex Kellner, and that gets you up to
- 30:12date. And now, let's take a 20 -second pause
- 30:15for station identification. Hi everybody, and
- 30:40those of you who may have just joined us, this
- 30:42is Red Barber speaking to you for post -serials
- 30:44from behind home plate at Ebbets Field, Brooklyn.
- 30:47The Giants are at bat in the second inning, Alvin
- 30:49Dark first up, and New York is ahead of Brooklyn
- 30:51two to nothing. Dan Bankett, the Dodgers, delivers
- 30:53a fastball that's drilled in for a Carl Sparks.
- 30:57Dark is hitting at 417, he's gotten off to a
- 30:59good start with the bat. He has five for 12.
- 31:02He's a fine ball player. Open stance, feet wide
- 31:07apart. No ball, two strikes. Atfield. Swing around
- 31:25into left. Infield is at the step because this
- 31:27fella can run. Dough. Backs out of there. Takes
- 31:31the heavy end of his bat. Knocks some play out
- 31:33of his spikes. The infield has been treated with
- 31:39Molder's sand this year. It is a darkish gray
- 31:43color. Back to McStark chasing a low outside
- 31:49hook. Second stack out for Daniel and rookie
- 31:54Jack Hoshman stepping up. H -A -R -S -H -M -A
- 32:01-N. Jack Hoshman. Minneapolis last year hit 270.
- 32:10Boy indigenous to San Diego, California. 6 '2,
- 32:13180 pounds. Do nothing, favor the Giants. Fine,
- 32:20sunny afternoon. Hoshman takes fastball, just
- 32:22too long. Ball one. We'll keep you posted on
- 32:45the other ballgames as they go along. I think
- 32:59that pitch is 2 -0. The end of the first inning
- 33:03in the ballgame between the Washington Nation
- 33:05and the New York Yankees was 1 -0 for the Yankees.
- 33:07So that's not a good start this year. The Red
- 33:10Sox. are leading at Philadelphia over the Athletics
- 33:133 -0 at the end of inning and a half. At the
- 33:16end of two innings now, Philadelphia -Boston
- 33:18in the National League, it's no score. The 2
- 33:20-1 pitch to Harshman, foul tipped, and it's now
- 33:222 -2. The Cincinnati -Pittsburgh game is now
- 33:27at the end of three innings, and it is 6 -1 in
- 33:30favor of the Parrots behind Bob Chesney. Hepke,
- 33:32who started for Cincinnati, was replaced in the
- 33:35second inning by Kirk Peterson. That's the old
- 33:43round to the right. Poshman left hand hitter.
- 33:49Claim to call. This year he's had two hits for
- 33:5111 at bats. Walker 182. But percentages are not
- 33:55too indicative this early. 2 -2 pitch. Flash
- 33:58ball. Foul tip. Still 2 -2. Thank you. Turn that
- 34:02one loose. 2 -2. He can throw that ball. Sets.
- 34:29No livers. Another foul ball. It's on the screen.
- 34:32Two and two. Two balls, two strikes. Chance two.
- 34:39Fudge is nothing. The wind is rather gusty this
- 34:51afternoon. At times it is strong and it seems
- 34:54to slow down. But the prevailing course of the
- 34:57wind is out to right field, which is the short
- 34:59field here at Eversfield. Those of you who have
- 35:01never seen the park and heard about it, maybe
- 35:03we'll better describe it for you. He took a pitch
- 35:06to Hartman and swung on a ground foul outside
- 35:08first. Pitch seven stops at his foot. Still two
- 35:13and two. Right field at Eversfield is one of
- 35:16the famous fields in all athletics. at this baseball
- 35:19alone. It's a concrete wall in right field, which
- 35:25goes up 20 feet off the ground. Then there is
- 35:28an abyss of 20 feet of wire screen on top of
- 35:31it. So the right field fence, while it is short
- 35:33here at Brooklyn, is very high. It's 40 feet
- 35:35high. So you just don't pop one into Bedford
- 35:38Avenue, which is a big six lane highway in back
- 35:42of it, or just a little bonded ball. Two -two
- 35:45pitch. Three balls, two strikes. Bankhead really
- 35:59wound up, and he can wind up on himself, too.
- 36:02The distance down the right field line in Brooklyn,
- 36:04which is relatively short, is 297 feet. Bankhead's
- 36:07at the back of the mound. However, in right center
- 36:11field, the wall standing away is 395 feet. Then
- 36:15you have double deck stands beginning in right
- 36:17center field. And going all the way around the
- 36:20rest of the park and coming right back in to
- 36:22the right field corner. In other words, it is
- 36:24just right field itself that has the wall. 20
- 36:26feet of concrete, 20 feet of screen, and the
- 36:28scoreboard is also out there. And the scoreboard
- 36:29is stuck out in front of it, which causes a series
- 36:31of angles. The 3 -2 pitch. Strike 3, 3, and the
- 36:35curve ball is hung on. Well, Bankhead has struck
- 36:39out the first two here in the second inning.
- 36:42Three strikeouts all goal. He got off to a shaky
- 36:45start, walking stanky, and then having Lachman's
- 36:48line drive sink in front of Russell when it looked
- 36:50to be a certain catch for it out. Then Thompson
- 36:53hit the right field wall for a single, the wall
- 36:55we were talking about. Mueller banged into a
- 36:56double play. The Giants had two runs, but from
- 36:58that time on, Bankhead has gotten five outs,
- 37:02pitching to his last four men. Wes Westrom, the
- 37:05right -hand -hitting catcher for the Giants,
- 37:07been around parts of the last two years. Open
- 37:11stance, takes a curve outside, ball walk. Westrom
- 37:15this year has not come up with a base hit, and
- 37:17he's been up officially six trips. Two -nothing.
- 37:21Play with the Giants. Always business when the
- 37:24Giants and the Dodgers are on hand. So, better
- 37:30ball low inside. Ball two. Posterior folks from
- 37:38Bible Creek, Michigan way. Very happy to be sending
- 37:41you this ball game from Brooklyn way. And whenever
- 37:46the Dodgers are home on Saturday. So will come
- 37:49these broadcasts. Two -nothing pitch. Curve over.
- 37:55Good. Ball struck. Two balls, one strike. One
- 38:02-one. That field toward left. Play Western to
- 38:08pull. Bank had a right -handed deal. Fastball
- 38:14low outside. Four ball free. See that one hard.
- 38:21Simmons pushing in first. Hey, Wes, come on.
- 38:24Get a good ball. Emmett's Field is one of the
- 38:28smallest ball parks in the major leagues. It
- 38:29seats nominally about 32 ,000. And part of its
- 38:33great charm is its complete and immediate intimacy
- 38:37with the game itself. You're never far away from
- 38:39the players. 3 -1 pitch. Curve swung on and fouled.
- 38:42On top of the third base stands, now to the park.
- 38:443 and 2. So whenever you are, you're actually
- 38:47in the ball game, so to speak. You don't have
- 38:50any great chasms and caverns and yawning distances,
- 38:54etc. You can see the players here, here with
- 39:02the coaches side. There's a lot of truth in the
- 39:09statement that is endured through the years.
- 39:11There's never a dull day with the Dodgers and
- 39:13certainly never at Eddard's Field. in the atmosphere
- 39:18right here. Something's gonna happen that'll
- 39:19happen here at Brooklyn. Three -two pitch. The
- 39:23high fly ball. Resultant deep out in the left
- 39:25center. Russell, the center fielder, is under
- 39:27it, waiting. We've got it. There goes the ball.
- 39:30Nothing is false for the Giants. In the top half
- 39:32for the second inning. At the end of the inning
- 39:34and a half, it remains New York 2 and Brooklyn's
- 39:37nothing. Carl Forello. Coming on now to be first
- 39:43up for the Dodgers, last for the second inning.
- 39:45Followed by Gil Hodges and then by Bob Morgan.
- 39:48Jake Pettler coaching at first base for the defending
- 39:50National League Champions. Melvin Stark at third.
- 39:54Rello, who was hitting in August and September,
- 39:56had much to do with Brooklyn coming up for the
- 39:58planet. He was hitting almost 500 there in the
- 40:01stretch, and that's the mark of the ball fair
- 40:03that he is. Rello hitting now, 3 -15, 231. At
- 40:08the old, back into right. Stanky on order from
- 40:12Drossian. The bench moves back deep to second
- 40:14base. Right -handed Kramer pitches a curve. It's
- 40:17a called strike. It's a big, slow bender. Look
- 40:20away from him. He caught the inside slice. No
- 40:24balls. One strike. Throw something in his eye.
- 40:34Steps out of the box for the moment. Kramer pumping.
- 40:42Better than right -hander. Kick throws. Let a
- 40:45ball in on the hands. He tried to make that look
- 40:47like the pitch just now when he broke the curve
- 40:49off the hands and over. Atrello stayed off of
- 40:51it, and the count goes to one and one. Kramer
- 40:56uses a lot of slow stuff. Manager bird shot into
- 41:01the Dodgers who doesn't wear a uniform. Sitting
- 41:04back there in the dugout. 21 -pitch, fastball,
- 41:09low outside. Ball two. and then the fastball,
- 41:20trying to crisscross from the outside. Two balls,
- 41:22one strike. Well, it's looking to stick just
- 41:29a little. He's quite strong. Two on pitch, fastball
- 41:33outside, four ball free. So, three miles behind,
- 41:36now three and one. Still has the orders. He looks
- 41:39at third base coach Milton Stock. He usually
- 41:41is the central man in the Brooklyn wigwag system.
- 41:44Stock, of course, keeps his eyes glued on Boss
- 41:46Shotton. They're in the dugout for the word.
- 41:49In the Major League, these fellows just don't
- 41:50go out there and do as they please, take orders.
- 41:59The 3 -1 pitch. Swung on, hit sharply down the
- 42:01short. Alvin Dock is up for the 20th time for
- 42:03the throw to first, which is accurate for the
- 42:05hospital, and Trello's up by two steps. The old
- 42:08foul was hitting, and Dock dropped the first.
- 42:12Gil Hadges, big first baseman, stepping up. Well,
- 42:22to the straightaway lower center field stand,
- 42:24it's 393 feet. Right center field to the lower
- 42:27stands. Double decked out there, 351. And in
- 42:30the left field corner, 348. Big Hodges, he's
- 42:35really been hotter than a two dollar pistol.
- 42:39Hitting at 700, 7 for 10. Big strong staff and
- 42:43right hand batter. Outfield toward right. Takes
- 42:45a fastball for a false right from the outside
- 42:47above the knee. Hodges is a magnificent athletic
- 42:51specimen. I don't know of anybody who has ever
- 42:53seen him that wants any part of it. He has the
- 42:56least trouble of any man on the face of the earth.
- 43:02And he's awfully good -natured, which everybody
- 43:04says, they're just grand. But if you're that
- 43:05strong, you ought to be good -natured. He's just
- 43:25coming into his own as a ball player. Big strong
- 43:33guy from Indiana. 21 pitch, swung on as a high
- 43:36ball deep under... Two to one game in favor of
- 44:28the Giants. Morgan takes a good curve, false
- 44:32strike. Looks like he says his mind is as big
- 44:37and strong just in time. Infield straight away
- 44:47on Bobby Morgan, who was the batting champion,
- 44:49hitting his 337th International League last year,
- 44:52and the league's most valuable player. Takes
- 44:54a fast ball high inside, ball one. Pushing up
- 45:02one from there after another to the Dodgers.
- 45:07The great baseball dynasty being built for Brooklyn.
- 45:19Tamer wants to sit with another baseball, so
- 45:21an exchange of advocates is made. That in the
- 45:24argument got played on by Rob. bringing up to
- 45:35date on all the games on the focus scoreboard
- 45:37as soon as the second inning is concluded. So
- 45:40you hang around here. 21 pitches to Kerr, come
- 45:43on and hit the foul. Out to that third baseman
- 45:45with a pretty high shot. Ball is hit down toward
- 45:49the giant bullpen, which is in the left field
- 45:50corner. The giant and the visiting teams at Ebbets
- 45:55Field use the dugout on the third base side and
- 45:57the bullpen in the left field corner. The home
- 46:00club, the Dodgers, use the dugout on the first
- 46:02base side. And the both end in the right field
- 46:04corner. Morgan in the pouch. Morgan strikes it
- 46:13down. Same old pump one. Better right hander
- 46:17once again. Kick time throws and Morgan spouses
- 46:21it back. 0 -1 and 2. He's rated by a lot of annoying
- 47:23baseball people as the best catcher in the game.
- 47:26Why not? Stocky, powerful catcher every day.
- 47:32Hatfield, around to what left? Payment delivers
- 47:34and Capitola sits down. That's all right. Down
- 47:38he went. There's a fastball. As the ball players
- 47:45say, that would have been stuck in his ear if
- 47:47he hadn't done it. baseball you don't think so
- 47:53in fact is anybody who is connected with baseball
- 47:57with this when you say that it's a game players
- 48:02their wives club executives it's a business and
- 48:07it's a rough game frame of deals and capital
- 48:12swings and calls it off nice ball coming in there
- 48:15took just a little bit off of it one -on -one
- 48:23Fine crowd on hand, headed by Commissioner Chandler,
- 48:27who's sitting down in the field box, branch breaking
- 48:29the serves and the dodges. 21 -50. False strike.
- 48:40On the outside, drove the knee. One ball, two
- 48:43strikes. Two men out, chance leading by a tally,
- 48:47two to one. really intricately out toward right.
- 49:29If they win, it would help a high drive hit toward
- 49:31right field. It would hold up to some degree,
- 49:34a high fly ball hit out into left. It would help
- 49:38on the bias, the ball hit high out in the center.
- 49:43Two to six, curve going on, hit out into right
- 49:45field, there's Hewlett back up against the goal,
- 49:47but waiting for it, he makes the catch and can't
- 49:49hold up into the top. So, Hodges is out at one,
- 49:53and it's the run and the hit. at the end of two
- 49:55innings, two runs, two hits, and no errors for
- 49:57the Giants. One run, and one hit, and no errors
- 50:02for Brooklyn. All right, we've been promised
- 50:05that it'd be 7 -1 at post scoreboard. Now let's
- 50:07take a look around. The Cardinals, who won their
- 50:10first game and have lost their next three, are
- 50:12at Chicago, where Bob Rush of the Cubs shut them
- 50:15out yesterday, 2 -0. And Staley, who pitched
- 50:18the opening game and the one victory for the
- 50:20Cardinals so far, is going to St. Louis. Bill
- 50:22Boydell. Who is now at his third ball club in
- 50:24the league. From the Giants to the Braves and
- 50:26now to the Cubs. Boiselle is making his first
- 50:28start as a Cub for Chicago. Big right -hander.
- 50:32Philadelphia's at Boston. Kurt Simmons, who's
- 50:33counted on so much by Philadelphia, that young
- 50:36hustling club that Bob Cobb has put together.
- 50:38Simmons starting for Philadelphia and Warren
- 50:40Spahn, who's already pitched and won a ball game,
- 50:42and a complete win for the Braves. No score in
- 50:44the two innings. In the three innings, Cincinnati
- 50:46-Pittsburgh. It is 6 -1, favor the Parrots. That
- 50:50test is for Pittsburgh. Hepsey started and then
- 50:53Kent Peterson for Cincinnati County on the second
- 50:54inning. In the American lay, Washington will
- 50:57roll off 1 -0 in favor of the Yankees end of
- 50:59the first inning. Boston and Philadelphia will
- 51:01be nothing in favor of the Red Sox over the Athletics.
- 51:04Nothing yet on Chicago, Detroit or Cleveland,
- 51:06St. Louis, but we'll have results later. Now
- 51:24a move into the third inning, and pitcher Jack
- 51:26Kramer is the first jive hitter. Atfield, back
- 51:32of the right. The wind has shifted and is blowing
- 51:35up toward the right field corner now. Kramer,
- 51:38right hand hitter. Bankhead pitcher, the curve,
- 51:39over first strike. Kramer hasn't been up in the
- 51:43National League this year, so of course we don't
- 51:45have any batting percentage for him. high inside,
- 51:56another hand, ball one. One and one. Things going
- 52:05quietly for the second. They won't stay that
- 52:07way long here at Brooklyn. Two on favor of the
- 52:09Giants. Bankhead's pitch, fastball is tied inside
- 52:12for ball two. that he targets thereafter. Pitch.
- 52:29Oh, second strike, fast forward on the outside.
- 52:33Now, Kramer steps out of there and starts arguing
- 52:35with Rob a little bit. Going to. Rocha is hollering
- 52:47from where he's putting a third base to Rob.
- 53:04The first three men for the Giants got off. And
- 53:24nobody else was shot. Two to one, favorite New
- 53:27York over Brooklyn. Primo putting on his jacket
- 53:30going back in the dugout. Stanky is hitting at
- 53:35250, three for 12. Bankhead deals. Flash ball
- 53:44high inside, ball one. And he hasn't gone as
- 53:46fast as Stanky today. He walked him on four straight
- 53:49pitches. Again, matters this afternoon. That's
- 54:00the logo for us, right? just opened up getting
- 55:29two runs off Boydell and getting him out of the
- 55:31ball game at Chicago. Boydell hit 2 -0. Bankette
- 55:34pitches 2 -2 to the tanky. And the curve gets
- 55:37into the outside, and now the Brooklyn battery
- 55:40is complaining. She lost to Price. Boydell started
- 55:47to the Cubs. The Cubs got him out of there, and
- 55:48Johnny Vandermeer, who were doing the winter,
- 55:50went from the red to the Cubs, took over. So
- 55:53the Cubs were bad in the last, the first inning,
- 55:55and the Cubs were hit 2 -0. the Dodgers here
- 56:01to have a feel. Two on. Thank you, Zahidah. One
- 56:05out. Nobody on. Three -two pitch. Outside for
- 56:15ball four. So thank you for the second straight
- 56:16time, Jordan Walk. Two walks beaten up by Bankhead.
- 56:21Whitey Lachlan, who is singled in the center
- 56:23field. First inning. He's hitting the 375, 6
- 56:29to 16. second at bat. The Pittsburgh Pirates
- 56:33at the end of four innings are now leading the
- 56:35Reds 9 -1 in the Pittsburgh game. Beard has hit
- 56:39a home run. Westlake has hit one to give him
- 56:42three in two days. Hernandez has hit one and
- 56:44Kynah has hit one his second in two days for
- 56:46the Pirates. Bankhead starts to get ready and
- 56:51then throws over to first. He's learned a great
- 56:56deal since he first got the chance to be Dodgers
- 56:58a couple years ago. Come down. Stop and throw.
- 57:06The curve swung on with a high -five ball in
- 57:08this deep set -of -peel. Russell goes back. Back.
- 57:11Sets. Makes the catch. Stanky is starting for
- 57:14second base. And here's a throw coming in to
- 57:16Robinson. And Stanky is safe. He makes it. Russell's
- 57:21throw into Robinson's second base. He was just
- 57:23on the short -stop side of second. Jack had to
- 57:26go off to the ball and then try and dive back
- 57:28in. And Stanky to Plasdon. and tagged up the
- 57:31first and went into second base. The ball was
- 57:32hit right back up against the center field wall,
- 57:34290 feet away. Wow, that's Stanky, I guess, bringing
- 57:39in his old teammate, Russell, doesn't have that
- 57:42much arm. Both of them, the Boston's, got together
- 57:44last year, the year before. Now Russell looking
- 57:48in the ground. Here's he went. Well, how did
- 57:51Stanky, who's not so fast, get the jump and beat
- 57:54me? He did it. Stanky is in scoring position,
- 58:01as they say in baseball or second base. And Henry
- 58:05Thompson, left hand hitting third baseman, who's
- 58:07single and got in the John's first run, the first
- 58:09inning is up. He's 4 -for -9 this year, hitting
- 58:124 -44. It's 2 -1, favor New York. Stanky delivers.
- 58:17Curve is low. Ball on. One ball, no strikes.
- 58:23Stanky is second. Be careful not to get off too
- 58:27far. All too. Bankhead asked for another apple.
- 58:50Exchange it made. Post cereal people. And the
- 58:57newest to the post cereals is Sugarcrisp and
- 59:00it's going like wildfire. Very happy to bring
- 59:04you this first regular season Brooklyn baseball
- 59:07game. Not only in New York, but on... Coast to
- 59:11coast hook up all over the country. Glad to have
- 59:13you. Every Saturday the Dodger at home, be the
- 59:16same. Two nothing pitch. Curve ball too high.
- 59:20Ball ball free. Free and all. The man at second
- 59:47base. Three nothing pitch. Probably for a call
- 59:49strike. Confidence taking. Three and one. Henry
- 1:00:01is probably on his own up there. They hit if
- 1:00:03he pleases. It's not like this. He's been hitting
- 1:00:09very well in his young season. Right hand to
- 1:00:12bank. Get in position. Check. Second delivers.
- 1:00:14High outside for ball four. So Thompson walks.
- 1:00:19That's the third walk given by Daniel. Man at
- 1:00:24first and second, two out. Up at the third. Campanella
- 1:00:31goes after the mound, talk to the pitcher. Sam
- 1:00:36Maron, the bullpen catcher for the Dodgers, gets
- 1:00:38up there on the right field corner. Pends the
- 1:00:41baseball over to Ralph Franka. And the big right
- 1:00:44-hander who wears number 13, he's one of 13 children,
- 1:00:48gets up, start warming again for the second time.
- 1:00:52Branko was throwing steadily, wasting no opportunity
- 1:00:55to get hot in the first inning. The John's got
- 1:00:58the two runs and it looked as though the bankhead
- 1:01:00was in one hit of being out of there. Managed
- 1:01:03a shot and of course there's a lot of patience.
- 1:01:04The John's opened up in a hurry. Now let's see,
- 1:01:07Don Mueller, the left -hand -hitting rookie right
- 1:01:09fielder in a crouch. Takes a high outside curve
- 1:01:12for ball one. Thank you, second. Henry Thompson
- 1:01:17can run off first. They're ready to take out.
- 1:01:21Two men retired. 2 -1, New York. The pitch. Curve's
- 1:01:26going on. There's a high pop fly in the short
- 1:01:28left field. Shostak Reese is back. He's under.
- 1:01:30Shostak's under and has it. Out number three.
- 1:01:33And the Johnson goes by the boards. No runs,
- 1:01:36no hits, and two men left. A wise man seldom
- 1:01:41makes predictions about baseball or anything
- 1:01:44else, but when something's practically sure fire,
- 1:01:46you can't resist. And if ever I saw success in
- 1:01:50the making, it's our new post -serial, Sugarcrisp.
- 1:01:54In city after city, wherever it's been introduced,
- 1:01:57Sugarcrisp is gonna smash it overnight. So when
- 1:02:00we say it's gonna be one of the biggest selling
- 1:02:02cereals in America, we're not just moving our
- 1:02:06molars. Have you tried it yet? Sugarcrisp, you
- 1:02:09know, is made of delicious big wheat puffs toasted
- 1:02:12with sugar and honey. You just add milk or cream
- 1:02:16and you've got yourself a truly tantalizing breakfast
- 1:02:19dish. In fact, friends, sugarcrisp is so good
- 1:02:23you'll want to eat it right out of the bag. For
- 1:02:25breakfast, it's dandy. For snacks, it's so handy.
- 1:02:29Or eat it like candy. Get a good supply at your
- 1:02:32grocery, will you? Look for sugarcrisp. in the
- 1:02:36red, white, and blue bag with the three brown
- 1:02:39bears. It's a post -serial. Well, let's take
- 1:02:4320 seconds now and hear who everybody is. We'll
- 1:02:46pause for our station identification. He's two
- 1:03:20to one in favor of the Giants. Just now, DeRosha,
- 1:03:26rather loudly hollered for freedom by Robb and
- 1:03:28put up quite a squawk. A lot of talk, but much
- 1:03:31to do about nothing. And here is Bankhead, the
- 1:03:34Brooklyn pitcher, up for his first at bat, and
- 1:03:36he's a good hitting pitcher. Swings and now the
- 1:03:38line drive over short out of the left field,
- 1:03:40and it's in there against the wall for a base
- 1:03:42hit. Bankhead is running the second base. It's
- 1:03:44going to be at least a double. He took the toenails
- 1:03:55off that one. Bingo. Big line drive. Bankhead
- 1:04:00in his first major league at bat when he came
- 1:04:02up with the Dodgers a couple of years ago, hit
- 1:04:03a home run. So he lined the double off the left
- 1:04:09field wall and puts for himself the tying run
- 1:04:12at second base. That's the second Brooklyn hit.
- 1:04:15Time is called while a sweater is taken off the
- 1:04:18Bankhead. It's a chosen afternoon even though
- 1:04:19the sun is out and it's very pleasant sitting
- 1:04:23in the sun. the Brooklyn Bat Boy has just carried
- 1:04:37a jacket, windbreaker, out the bank head. The
- 1:04:40Dodgers are wearing their home whites and the
- 1:04:42Giants are wearing their road greys, trimmed
- 1:04:44in black and orange. Rustham is down, giving
- 1:04:50the sign. Kiwi Reese, who's tied out to left
- 1:04:53field, is first at bat. He's got 200 so far,
- 1:04:573 for 15. These batting contenders we give you
- 1:05:00are right up to the time the batter is there
- 1:05:03at the box. Bankhead who can run off second,
- 1:05:11nobody out. Kramer pitches a curve low outside,
- 1:05:13ball walked. Speaking about our batting percentages,
- 1:05:17we're very happy on our broadcast to have with
- 1:05:19us a very competent young statistician, Bob Prasade,
- 1:05:23been with us for the last three years now. We're
- 1:05:26all bat on to give you the best broadcast we
- 1:05:29can. We got a fellow we want you to meet in the
- 1:05:32fourth inning, too, that you're going to like.
- 1:05:34A fellow named Connie Desmond. You and I have
- 1:05:37only been together eight years. We're almost
- 1:05:39on speaking terms. Reese backs out of there.
- 1:05:46Kramer, who has been just fussing around. Now
- 1:05:53is up on the mound, finally. He's in no hurry.
- 1:05:56Reese leading in. In field, up a step. The pitch
- 1:05:59is over. Fastball for a call strike above the
- 1:06:02knees. He was a fast bowler, just a little bit
- 1:06:04taken off. Kramer is a change of speed pitcher.
- 1:06:07It's sometimes hard to detect just whether he's
- 1:06:10putting on or taking off. The Dodgers have a
- 1:06:12tying run at second, nobody outlasted the third
- 1:06:14inning. The Giants, two and Brooklyn one. Kramer
- 1:06:21asks for the sign again, steps off the rubber,
- 1:06:23and he's on. Right -hander sets pitches, a curve.
- 1:06:32Now for Carl's second strike. And Reese walks
- 1:06:36out of there. One ball, two strikes. If you're
- 1:06:42going in for personal popularity, don't take
- 1:06:45up the profession of umpire. Anytime you call
- 1:06:48a player that's anyway is a tall on the borderline,
- 1:06:52as sure as you call it, you're going to have
- 1:06:5450 % of the colors in these monkey suits out
- 1:06:56here unhappy. And one ball, two strikes. Wind
- 1:07:01blowing out the right field. Reaches a left field
- 1:07:03hitter as a row. Peewee gets out of there, gets
- 1:07:11out of waiting on Kramer. Go to right -hander,
- 1:07:18comes down, stops, delivers, curve outside for
- 1:07:24ball two. Going to for tomorrow's ball game,
- 1:07:30Jack Collins. Business manager of the Dodgers
- 1:07:32is advised there'll be 14 ,000 seats of all kinds
- 1:07:34on sale when the park is open tomorrow. Don Newcomb
- 1:07:38is to be the starting pitcher for the Brooklyn
- 1:07:40Dodgers. Big, giant right -hander. Ball for DeRosha,
- 1:07:43it might be Mario Kennedy, or it might be Sheldon
- 1:07:47Jones. Leo said there's a possibility it might
- 1:07:49even be Hartong, one of the three, probably one
- 1:07:50of the first two. Two -two pitch to reach. Swung
- 1:07:54on, there's a ground ball down the short. Bankhead's
- 1:07:56going over third. Dark throws for third base,
- 1:07:58and Bankhead is out. Henry Thompson. And Reese
- 1:08:03holds it first. So that was a nice play. Shortstop
- 1:08:06dark over to Thompson. Bankhead figured he could
- 1:08:08get over there. He runs pretty fast. But as a
- 1:08:11general rule, when you're in a spot like that,
- 1:08:13you don't try and go over the ball's head ahead
- 1:08:15of you with less than two out. In other words,
- 1:08:21you stay up there. If there's any question about
- 1:08:22it, you stay at second base. Makes the play go
- 1:08:24to first. So what has happened is the Dodgers
- 1:08:28have accumulated one out. and their potential
- 1:08:30tying on his move from second all the way back
- 1:08:32to first base. Reese is on it first, scored as
- 1:08:40he appealed his choice. Bankhead is out at third.
- 1:08:42There was no force on that play at all. He wasn't
- 1:08:44forced to go over the short step to the third
- 1:08:45baseman. And Augie Donatelli, the umpire, was
- 1:08:49right on top of that play at third too. He had
- 1:08:51it. George Schubert, who hit... Quite a fly ball,
- 1:09:01but Thompson, who can cover a lot of ground,
- 1:09:03made quite a catch out of it in the first inning.
- 1:09:06Schuba has one hit for nine at bats. Of course,
- 1:09:08if he doesn't pick up, that means that Gene Harmanski
- 1:09:10will be out there in left field. Rob takes a
- 1:09:18new ball, running it up. field has also swung
- 1:09:43drastically around for the first place. This
- 1:09:45place, Schuber, is tricky right field hitter.
- 1:09:49Reese at first, one retired, Giants two, Rogers
- 1:09:54one, tying run at first. Right hander came with
- 1:10:00pitches and Schuber takes an outside one, about
- 1:10:02a three -quarter speed pitch for ball one. Fun
- 1:10:08and all. Curve, low end side, ball two. See that
- 1:10:32Eddie Brannock, the veteran and vulnerable, the
- 1:10:36very capable road secretary of the New York Giants
- 1:10:38has moved over and is sitting with Commissioner
- 1:10:40Chandler now. Harold Parrott, the young road
- 1:10:43secretary of the Dodgers, is sitting on the other
- 1:10:44side of the commission, so the commissioners
- 1:10:46sort of learn all the facts, I guess, about how
- 1:10:49the fellas go around this league. I think he
- 1:10:53knew him already. I see Schuber up there too
- 1:10:57and all. Takes a curve low inside for ball three,
- 1:11:01so Kramer says, give me another ball. Over in
- 1:11:05the giant dugout, that is the club box at the
- 1:11:11third base end of the giant dugout, Harris Stonem,
- 1:11:15the president of the Giants, and his assistant,
- 1:11:19Gary Schumacher, who's one of the great baseball
- 1:11:21writers, one of the New York Journal American,
- 1:11:23before he went there with Stonem. and Stonem's
- 1:11:26friend and fellow calls up number one Jard Roodle,
- 1:11:28it might be, Toot Shaw, they're sitting over
- 1:11:30there. There's a 3 -0 pitch at par 4, it's a
- 1:11:333 -0 walk, and Kramer has the tying run behind
- 1:11:36him at second base again. Walks Schilber right
- 1:11:38here, that pushes Reese over to second. Second
- 1:11:41walk given up by Kramer, and the Giants are a
- 1:11:45little bit starved now. Catcher Weston goes out
- 1:11:48to the mound, third baseman Henry Thompson comes
- 1:11:50over to the mound. There's been no activity down
- 1:11:55in the giant boat then, where Herman Franks was
- 1:11:58holding for. And right now, there's a little
- 1:12:00merriment going on. A balloon flew out of the
- 1:12:02left field stands. And Ray Mueller, one of the
- 1:12:06giant catchers, went out there left field and
- 1:12:08had a little trouble trying to catch up with
- 1:12:09it. Every time he'd lean over for it, some little
- 1:12:11perverse breeze would blow it away. But he got
- 1:12:14it. I say everything happens in Brooklyn. You
- 1:12:17just wait around. It won't happen yet. But here's
- 1:12:20Jim Russell. Rather strong, I think, by two different
- 1:12:24plays out there in center field. One that Bollie
- 1:12:27didn't come up with in the first inning, and
- 1:12:29that mistake, he goes from first to second, and
- 1:12:30the fly ball is caught just now. Russell takes
- 1:12:32the fast ball over for a called strike. Russell
- 1:12:36walked in the first inning. That's the run toward
- 1:12:44right. Wind is blowing toward right, and as if
- 1:12:47Russell would pull one, the wind would be with
- 1:12:49him. Infield is Alfonso Ruiz at second, Krueger
- 1:12:58at first, the both get in. Flamie Deos, pass
- 1:13:02ball high outside, all one. He'll put the fellow
- 1:13:06away from him, he'll take away to a degree, he
- 1:13:08has a bullet to the core by making him to the
- 1:13:11other field. Josh leading two to one. Third and
- 1:13:23final game of this series, tomorrow afternoon,
- 1:13:25two o 'clock. good at its deal. Russell, get
- 1:13:31us out of there. We've rattled out a home between
- 1:13:34every one of Kramer's pictures. Now here's Thank
- 1:13:36You coming in from second base to the mile. He's
- 1:13:40got a visit with Kramer. The second baseman goes
- 1:13:56jogging back. His father -in -law is looking
- 1:14:08for a base coach to make him stop. One -on -one
- 1:14:13pitch. Carras hung on hip drive down the stanky.
- 1:14:15Who's up with it? Over the second of golf. One
- 1:14:17-out throw on the first base. Another play. is
- 1:14:28Becky the dog and over to Hoshman at first base.
- 1:14:32No runs, one hit, so Bankhead didn't help himself
- 1:14:35when he ran over to third base when Reese hit
- 1:14:37that half speed ground ball short. Well folks,
- 1:14:42post -serials, very happy to bring you the ball
- 1:14:45games. Very quickly let me run over the post
- 1:14:48scoreboard. At the end of an inning and a half
- 1:14:50of the Cardinal Cup game, it is three to one
- 1:14:52in favor of the Cardinals. At the end of five
- 1:14:54innings, the Phillies and the Braves, it is 1
- 1:14:56-0 in favor of the Phillies. At the end of five
- 1:15:00and a half innings of the Pittsburgh -Sit -Static
- 1:15:02game, it is 9 -1 in favor of the Porridge, with
- 1:15:05Beard, Westlake, Fernandez, and Kynah hitting
- 1:15:07home runs. That gives Westlake three for the
- 1:15:09year and Kynah two. In the American League, at
- 1:15:12the end of three innings, Washington is leading
- 1:15:14the Yankees, 4 -1. And they got Porterfield out
- 1:15:17of there, in favor of Sanford. At the end of
- 1:15:19four innings, the Red Sox lead the Athletics,
- 1:15:214 -0 behind Starr. Chicago and Detroit have begun
- 1:15:25white for Chicago and put them on for Detroit
- 1:15:29and it is no score at the end of half an inning
- 1:15:31nothing yet on Cleveland at st. Louis because
- 1:15:33of the divergence in time which always a few
- 1:15:35moments ago that Connie Desson was coming on
- 1:15:38to do the middle of the ball game for you I don't
- 1:15:41know a finer broadcaster and more important a
- 1:15:45finer man I've often said and I'll repeat it
- 1:15:48again as long as we get close to coast listening
- 1:15:50today anytime Desson quits I'm going to go right
- 1:15:52out with it So, here is Mr. C .J., better known
- 1:15:56to the trade as Connie Desmond. And friends,
- 1:16:00here's Konya. Thank you, Red. Bobby Thompson
- 1:16:04leading off. Al Dark will follow, and then will
- 1:16:07come Jack Hoshman, the big first baseman. So,
- 1:16:11Dan Bankhead making his first major league start
- 1:16:13has got himself a honey going here. New York
- 1:16:16got him brought two to one. Bankhead swings into
- 1:16:19his windup, comes out with his first pitch, a
- 1:16:21curve ball in there for a strike. Thompson 4
- 1:16:25for 9. He was off to a very slow start in the
- 1:16:28first two games. The Giants played over at the
- 1:16:30holograms with Boston. But he's found the range,
- 1:16:34getting it 4 -44. He figures to be one of the
- 1:16:38big guns in the Giants' attack this year. Comes
- 1:16:43up almost on the tips of his toes. He levels
- 1:16:46that stick. Bankhead spins down in through there
- 1:16:49with a curve, like too close. Too on the way.
- 1:16:52It stands in favor of New York. Opfield has set
- 1:16:58up just about straight away here on Bobby, and
- 1:17:01they're deep. Alvin Dark waiting on deck. Bankhead
- 1:17:08serves the strike two pitch, curve outside. Of
- 1:17:12course he can afford to throw a couple of waste
- 1:17:14balls now as he jumped ahead with two quick strikes.
- 1:17:19Post Serials, very happy to be sending it all
- 1:17:21your way. Russell has gone over a few steps in
- 1:17:27the left -center field. Now the 1 -2 push to
- 1:17:31Thompson. He lays off with a high fastball. The
- 1:17:37Dodger Batboy is walking down towards the bullpen
- 1:17:40with some information from Bonnie Shotton. I'm
- 1:17:44sure there'll be any fireworks. Wants a couple
- 1:17:47of fellas to be up and ready. Now Bankett throws
- 1:17:502 -2 again, swung on and chops out along the
- 1:17:52third baseline. Morgan up with it. Bobby showed
- 1:17:55a high defense on it. 0 -5 for three of you scoring.
- 1:18:00One away in the top half of the fourth inning.
- 1:18:04Giants beating the Dodgers 2 -1. Daggy opened
- 1:18:08the ball game with a walk. Lachman single him
- 1:18:10on to second base. Thompson got him in with a
- 1:18:12crack in the left center field. Sending Lachman
- 1:18:15around to third base. And then when Mueller hit
- 1:18:17into a double play, Lachman scored from third
- 1:18:20base. That's how the Giants got their two. With
- 1:18:23one out in the second inning, Hodges unloaded
- 1:18:25a big four base blow deep back in the left center
- 1:18:28field stands. It was quite a wallop. First pitch
- 1:18:31to dark is high for ball one. Bankett, after
- 1:18:34that wobbly start, is settled down. Not given
- 1:18:38a hit since Thompson, who was the third man up
- 1:18:40in the first inning, hit a run in. Bankett shows
- 1:18:46again over on fastball, whizzed right through
- 1:18:48there for a cold strike. Deceptive almost swivel
- 1:18:57hip motion out there on the mound. And he's got
- 1:18:59a little fancy flutter kick along with it. Then
- 1:19:04Binscombe down the curve, outside. Dark ran up
- 1:19:07as if to bunt. Pitch was way wide. All two strike
- 1:19:11one. Dark hitting a .385, five for 13. He and
- 1:19:19Stanky came to the joint, you know, and one of
- 1:19:21the biggest, if not the biggest. Winter trade.
- 1:19:25Setting Sam Webb, Sid Gordon, Willard Marshall,
- 1:19:30and Buddy Kerr up to the hubs. Bankhead goes
- 1:19:33outside, 3 -1. The weight stands now. One down
- 1:19:39here, top half of the fourth inning. DeRoscher
- 1:19:42walking up and down, scratching away with his
- 1:19:44spikes there. At third base, Freddy Fitzsimmons
- 1:19:47coaching at first. Bankhead behind now. strike
- 1:19:53one pitch way outside ball four and dark is on
- 1:20:00walk number four given up by Dan Jack Harshman
- 1:20:07struck out his last time up big tall gangly first
- 1:20:11baseman left hand hitter have a little trouble
- 1:20:16getting that bat on the baseball hitting at 167
- 1:20:21Got a couple of base hits. One of them was a
- 1:20:24home run at the Polar Grounds against the Braves.
- 1:20:28Came with a couple on, too. The Giants, you know,
- 1:20:32have yet to win their first ball game of the
- 1:20:341950 season. Dark at first base. Bankhead's pitch
- 1:20:39came down. Harshman steps away from the curveball
- 1:20:41and broke tight up against him. Ball one. This,
- 1:20:48you know, is the ballpark that haunched the Giants.
- 1:20:51some of the rough ones they've lost over here.
- 1:21:20We go back about five, right up at the base of
- 1:21:22the concrete right field fence to haul it in.
- 1:21:26Two out. Brings up the big burly catcher of New
- 1:21:30York, West Westroom. And if West knew some place
- 1:21:36where this old bay sits, he'd be a pretty good
- 1:21:38customer right now. He's 0 for 7. Down she comes.
- 1:22:26Jack Kramer is with the St. Louis Browns and
- 1:22:31the Boston Red Sox. He had a great year in 48,
- 1:22:35won 18 and lost 5. Then in 44 he helped pitch
- 1:22:39the St. Louis Browns to their first pennant in
- 1:22:41the World Series and he won a World Series game
- 1:22:44too. Dodger infield laying back of course. Two
- 1:22:52away, they're going for the big out here. New
- 1:22:54York out in front, 2 -1. Pumps come down to curveball,
- 1:23:00but it's low under the knees, ball one. First
- 1:23:03base open. Eddie Snikey's out on deck with Windbreaker
- 1:23:08on. It's rather chilly in the shadows here at
- 1:23:10Evans Field. Ralph Frank is up throwing down
- 1:23:13on the bullpen for Brooklyn. Backhead, Lines
- 1:23:16comes in again with a curveball over for Wright.
- 1:23:19And it's one and one. Bright, sunshiny day here
- 1:23:24in Brooklyn, USA. Down comes another one. The
- 1:25:48first pitch here to Stanky comes down with a
- 1:25:49twin on and foul back up over our heads behind
- 1:25:51home plate. Strike one. Well the Dodgers thought
- 1:25:55they were in a good spot with a pitcher coming
- 1:25:56up but things didn't work out that way. Mr. Kramer
- 1:26:00was the boy who was in the good spot. Big DC
- 1:26:06six flying over into LaGuardia. Bankhead pushes
- 1:26:12again a little Eddie. High inside. Ball one.
- 1:26:15Ball one. Strike one. Kramer made sure there
- 1:26:19wasn't anybody on after he swatted that one.
- 1:26:26Boy, that's the insult supreme. The pitcher hits
- 1:26:29a home run off you. Curve drops in there for
- 1:26:31call strike two. Ball one, strike two. Five to
- 1:26:38one. Play for the Giants. Roger's got a little
- 1:26:45smile on his face now. He hasn't had much to
- 1:26:48smile. this year. Bank gets next with a curve
- 1:26:51that is low, ball two. Three runs in here in
- 1:26:55the top half of the fourth inning. Five to one,
- 1:26:58New York. Post -serials, happy to be sending
- 1:27:01it all your way. Say, by the way, have you tried
- 1:27:03sugar crisp yet? Oh boy, if you haven't, right
- 1:27:07after the ball game, you better get to your grocery
- 1:27:09store and stock up. The new cereal sensation
- 1:27:14added to the great family of post -serials. Now
- 1:27:18the 2 -2 pitch, and it's over. Call strike three.
- 1:27:22Frankie is out. Three runs on two hits. Nobody
- 1:27:29left. Well, here it is, fans, hot off the press.

- 1:28:31New York. And make sure your name and address
- 1:28:34is included, won't you? And you'll get your copy
- 1:28:36of this great Dodger yearbook, Toronto. some
- 1:29:00work to do. Robinson will lead it off. Jack has
- 1:29:03been up once and grounded the second base. Willow
- 1:29:07will follow and then will come Big Hodges. It's
- 1:29:10been the one man assault for Brooklyn today.
- 1:29:14Big home run. Robinson lays off and picks it,
- 1:29:17wrinkles outside ball one. Bobby Thompson out
- 1:29:25in center field is shaded over towards right
- 1:29:27center on Robinson. Lockman is straight away
- 1:29:31out on the left and Don Mueller, the right fielder,
- 1:29:33is playing over in front of the scoreboard. Sort
- 1:29:35of fanned out. Kramer throws a gun a little outside,
- 1:29:40ball two. New York five, Brooklyn one. We have
- 1:29:49two very slow pitchers working. Ball game in
- 1:29:53the last half of the fourth inning and it's an
- 1:29:55hour and a half old. Kramer kicks them down,
- 1:30:00another one on the outside edge for a call strike.
- 1:30:03Two and one. Branca continues to throw it out
- 1:30:08on the bullpen. The Dodgers get down deep enough,
- 1:30:11they may hit for Bankhead, or maybe this will
- 1:30:14be all for Dan. We'll have to wait and see. That's
- 1:30:17shotton's job, not mine. Now the 2 -1 pitch,
- 1:30:22Twonahan and Vazfolie down toward short. Third
- 1:30:24baseman Thompson is over. Up with it and goes
- 1:30:26the first for the out. I don't think Dark could
- 1:30:29have made the play. Henry Thompson hustled over,
- 1:30:31cutting in front of the short fielder, scooped
- 1:30:33it up, and threw him out. Five to three of your
- 1:30:39scoring. One away now as Carl Perillo steps in.
- 1:30:44Trushed up Dark, threw him out. Carl let off
- 1:30:47the second inning. First pitch, he let up one,
- 1:31:00went on and hit down into the hole between second
- 1:31:02and third. There's a long show by Dark. In time,
- 1:31:05a bang -banger over first base. So Barillo is
- 1:31:09out on a fine play by Blocky Dark. Now had to
- 1:31:13go into the hole and that's the toughest play
- 1:31:15for a short stop to make. Over to the right,
- 1:31:17scoop up the ball deep, then turn and make the
- 1:31:20throw accurately and in time. And Barillo, one
- 1:31:23of the fastest men on the squad. that he made
- 1:31:29it. Two down. Gil Hodges splashed a big home
- 1:31:39run with one away in the second inning. The second
- 1:31:41of the year with a Dodgers loan tally is up.
- 1:31:45Gil batting at 727. Pitch outside. Down here,
- 1:32:01last of the fourth inning, five to one New York.
- 1:32:10Kramer sends another one through there for a
- 1:32:12call strike. Ball one, strike one. The cricket
- 1:32:16line of the Giants are deep and around into left.
- 1:32:23Inter -depend, playing back deep. fellow up there
- 1:32:28Gil Hodges can really overpower that baseball.
- 1:32:34Now the 1 -1 pitch over and fastball double the
- 1:32:37time if the strike too cold. The way Kramer's
- 1:32:47pitching today it's hard to believe that the
- 1:32:49Red Sox who need pitching very badly would cut
- 1:32:52him loose. He's got it today so far. You've got
- 1:33:01to get them in the clubhouse. Oh, they're yours.
- 1:33:04Oh, that really had him himself. Go down he goes,
- 1:33:10a -wavin'. First strikeout on the way for Big
- 1:33:15Kramer. Down the Dodgers go out, trailing 5 -1.
- 1:33:21Managers shot him. He plays things pretty close
- 1:33:24to the vest. Excited that Bankhead had had enough.
- 1:33:39But he was in there, he walked four, struck out
- 1:33:41three, gave up five runs and but four hits. Oh,
- 1:33:51Ralph Rankin. Firing him down out there. Big
- 1:33:58Ralph was in 34 ballgames last year, won 13 and
- 1:34:02lost five. Lives in here by Mount Vernon, New
- 1:34:06York. He's a big guy. 220 pounds. And down in
- 1:34:12the Dodger bullpen, Jack Vanta, a right -hander,
- 1:34:15is up and throwing. So let's see what the Giants
- 1:34:22will do here in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:34:24Lachman, Thompson, and Mueller will be coming
- 1:34:25up in that order. Five to one, New York. Most
- 1:34:31serious, very happy to be your host this afternoon.
- 1:34:41down near third and takes it to the up. Loughlin
- 1:34:44is retired by Blanca, comes out here in the fifth
- 1:34:47inning on one pitch. Bobby Morgan, the third
- 1:34:50baseman, could have made the play too, but Reese,
- 1:34:52the shortstop, was angling over and had a better
- 1:34:55shot at it. So the Dodger captain went in for
- 1:34:58the catch. Went away, top of the fifth. And Henry
- 1:35:02Thompson, with a perfect afternoon, a single
- 1:35:03and a walk is up, getting it 4 -44. Four for
- 1:35:07nine, left hand hitter, steps away from the fastball
- 1:35:09inside. Wiker was troubled with a bad arm. Down
- 1:35:13at Vero Beach, the Dodgers spring training quarters.
- 1:35:17Brownie had an abscess tooth taken care of. And
- 1:35:23then the arm trouble disappeared, so Ralph was
- 1:35:25ready to go. That shot just dropped him in here
- 1:35:27on a relief roll. Ralph goes again and gets it
- 1:35:32in for a call strike. Now the 1 -1 pitch, a lineup
- 1:35:36curve, too high. Ball two. him down another pitch
- 1:35:54and this one is Nixon. I'll make that officially
- 1:36:03ball four. That was awful close. Official score
- 1:36:14says no ball four, no hit batsman. So if you're
- 1:36:17scoring, put a W down next to Thompson's name.
- 1:36:21Up there now is Don Mueller, the right fielder.
- 1:36:24Dodgers infield in double -play depth. Thompson
- 1:36:27goes down to second. The pitch swung on and rolled
- 1:36:30out to Robinson. Jack's throw is to first base
- 1:36:32and Henry now is down at the pick -up post. That
- 1:36:36was a hit -and -run play and all Jack could do
- 1:36:38was make his play to first base because Thompson
- 1:36:40was off as Franka came down with his pitch. Mueller
- 1:36:44also hit it rather slowly out toward second base.
- 1:36:47There was no chance for a double play. Bobby
- 1:36:51Thompson. We took call strike three in the first
- 1:36:55inning and brought it out to Morgan his last
- 1:36:57time up third. Two out. Top half of inning five.
- 1:37:05Score five to one. Favor of New York. First push
- 1:37:09to Thompson. Swung out a dribble slowly down
- 1:37:11along the third baseline. Morgan's got to come
- 1:37:12fast. Picks it up close to first not in time.
- 1:37:16A swiver down along the third baseline. Branker
- 1:37:19came off the mound. He could not feel the ball
- 1:37:21as it trickled by him. Morgan had to come all
- 1:37:23the way. Made a bare hand pick up and another
- 1:37:25hand flew over to Hodges, but not in time. And
- 1:37:28Thompson who can fly. They nicknamed him the
- 1:37:31flying scotch, you know. Out -legged for a base
- 1:37:34knock. On to third base comes Henry Thompson.
- 1:37:39So Brank is in trouble right now with a good
- 1:37:40hitter coming up. Blackie Dark. Now struck out
- 1:37:44his first time and walked the last. Mata continues
- 1:37:49to throw down there to Sam Naran's big lip. The
- 1:37:52Dodger bullpen along the right field line. Dark
- 1:37:54right -hand hitter, runners on it, first and
- 1:37:56third, two out here. Dark lays off a high fastball,
- 1:38:00ball one. Dark getting a .385. Outfield shifted
- 1:38:10into left. Although Dark sprays a lot of base
- 1:38:13hits in the right field. Franka holds his stretch,
- 1:38:18checks both runners. Pitches, one on and hit
- 1:38:20out the short, races up with it, throws to Robinson,
- 1:38:22they get a force play on Thompson. No runs, one
- 1:38:29hit, two men left on. Well friends, you may ask,
- 1:38:37is there any difference in corn flakes? Oh man,
- 1:38:41there's a world of difference. Yes, fans, you
- 1:38:44taste post -toasties. and see if it isn't better
- 1:38:47than any other corn flakes you've ever eaten.
- 1:38:50And it's post -toasting that makes the difference.
- 1:38:53You'll say post -toasties are the freshest, the
- 1:38:56crispiest, most delicious corn flakes you ever
- 1:38:59put on the breakfast table. So the next time
- 1:39:01you're at your grocers, don't ask for corn flakes.
- 1:39:05Ask for post -toasties, the better corn flakes.
- 1:39:09They're eating proof that it's post for flavor,
- 1:39:12post for freshness, and post for the most of
- 1:39:15everything good in cereals. Do you remember that,
- 1:39:18won't you, mother? Post toasties. You can probably
- 1:39:30hear a little stirring around Ebbets Field. They
- 1:39:33just posted five big runs for the New York Yankees
- 1:39:36in the last half of the fifth inning. And they
- 1:39:39now move out in front of Washington by the score
- 1:39:42of six to five. The Red Sox in Philadelphia at
- 1:39:55the end of five innings are tied up 4 -4. Stubbs
- 1:39:58against Kellner in that ball game. Chicago and
- 1:40:00Detroit have just started. Bill White for the
- 1:40:02White Sox. Art Hudeman for Detroit. Chicago failed
- 1:40:05to score on their half of the first inning. Bobby
- 1:40:07Feller going for Cleveland against St. Louis'
- 1:40:09W. Obermeyer. Pick up the nice to make as we
- 1:40:12go along here. Bobby Morgan leading off for the
- 1:40:17Dodgers, 5 -1 in favor of New York. Kramer comes
- 1:40:20down to his first pitch, got a curveball that
- 1:40:23is swung on and foul tipped back. Jack Maddock
- 1:40:28continues to throw down on the bullpen. The National
- 1:40:32League for the Cardinals, it is Jerry Staley
- 1:40:34who won his first start. Cardinals have three,
- 1:40:37Chicago one. Boys all started, Vandermeer in
- 1:40:39the first and Paul Minner the former Dodger in
- 1:40:41the third inning. Philadelphia won, Boston nothing
- 1:40:46at the end of five innings. Kurt Simmons for
- 1:40:50the Cullys, Warren Spahn for the Braves. Kramer
- 1:40:55takes too much time and Morgan backs out. Pittsburgh
- 1:40:59having a picnic at Forbes Field, leading Cincinnati
- 1:41:039 -1. The knock at home runs over that short
- 1:41:06left field fence too, out in Mr. Greenberg's
- 1:41:09gardens, as they call it. Morgan takes high.
- 1:41:15Beard hit a home run in the second inning with
- 1:41:16one on, his first of the year. Wally Ruslick
- 1:41:18hit his third in the third inning with nobody
- 1:41:20on. Danny Fernandez hit one in the fourth with
- 1:41:23nobody on, his first. Ralph Conner hit one in
- 1:41:26the fourth with a man on, his second. Kramer,
- 1:41:29triple -pumping out there, kicks up, comes down,
- 1:41:31picks one on, and hits two out in the centerfield
- 1:41:33for a base hit. to Roy and the ball gets away
- 1:42:22from Weston. Morgan's passed the second and holds
- 1:42:24up. Ball skidded in the dirt and Weston was able
- 1:42:29to partially block it to keep it from going behind.
- 1:42:35Cal Abrams is out on deck. They hit for a blanket.
- 1:42:39So it looks like Manta will be coming on to be
- 1:42:40the third Dodger pitcher in this ball game. Big
- 1:42:44Jack now comes to his top position. Morgan down
- 1:42:46off first base to pitch to Campanella. Swung
- 1:42:48on, hit down to third. in the last field. Pitch
- 1:44:22into Abraham to low curve with all one. Cavadilla
- 1:44:26on a first base. Morgan is at second thanks to
- 1:44:31the error by the third baseman, Henry Thompson.
- 1:44:34That ball was hit sharply down the third and
- 1:44:37swiftly enough to start a very easy double play.
- 1:44:41The Dodgers will take runners anywhere they can
- 1:44:43get them against this Kramer. Outlander's pitch,
- 1:44:56fastball outside. grocery order you have you
- 1:45:29better do it all right now now the two nothing

- 1:46:15Cox is here with a ball club but not a uniform
- 1:46:18that bad back it is for a pinch hitter to go
- 1:46:48up there and take call strike three. Well, DeRosha's
- 1:46:53out of the mound once again. Peewee Reese coming
- 1:46:57up, bringing a couple of sticks. Well, the last
- 1:47:02board of directors meeting for New York worked
- 1:47:04out all right for them. They went out there,
- 1:47:06talked it over, and struck out Abram. DeRosha
- 1:47:09decided, well, it's a good one, so I might as
- 1:47:11well try it again. Kramer, of course, you know,
- 1:47:14just coming into this league. is not too well
- 1:47:18acquainted with these hitters. DeRosier has been
- 1:47:21around a long time. This tells him the series
- 1:47:24of pitches he wants. Bob Morgan down at second
- 1:47:29base. Roy Campanella first with one out here.
- 1:47:32Last of the fifth inning. And the Giants leading
- 1:47:34the Dodgers five to one. Kramer now goes to work
- 1:47:39on Reese. Right hand hitter. First pitch off
- 1:47:42the corner by one. Peewee's having a tough time
- 1:47:45starting. He has three base hits on a 16th match
- 1:47:48for a very low percentage of 1 -8 -8. And when
- 1:47:55you get about $35 ,000 a year, you just don't
- 1:47:58hit 1 -8 -8. Kramer taking his time. He's in
- 1:48:08his spot here. He wants to wiggle out of it.
- 1:48:11The bat is just about ready. Throw on a couple
- 1:48:14of leisurely pitches. Both runners lead away
- 1:48:17now. The pitch, Reese takes a curve outside.
- 1:48:21That was awful close. Reese didn't know whether
- 1:48:23to go at it or not. Checked his swing and it
- 1:48:26flipped outside. Slider. Ball two. winning his
- 1:48:54first game of the year. He lost one, the opening
- 1:48:56day of Simon against St. Louis. Pittsburgh nine
- 1:49:00runs, 12 hits in an hour. Cincinnati two runs,
- 1:49:02eight hits in no hour. Great home runs all over
- 1:49:06the place. Kramer pulls him down the pitch, on
- 1:49:14the corner for a strike. Three -one now on race,
- 1:49:18and Pugh takes a long look down to Milton Stock
- 1:49:20coaching at third base. They see what they want
- 1:49:23them to do about this one. Big pitch for Kramer.
- 1:49:34Here it is. Oh, a side ball. Kramer walks Reese.
- 1:49:44That pushes Morgan around to the far turn. Campanella
- 1:49:47goes to the middle stop. And Reese is at first
- 1:49:50base with one down here. for the fifth inning.
- 1:49:57George Schuba, who's been trying to battle his
- 1:50:00way on this ball club, could endear himself to
- 1:50:02the hearts of many a Flatbush follower by nudging
- 1:50:06one right now. They're stocked up for him. Kramer
- 1:50:16doesn't have a place to put anybody else. Now
- 1:50:20his first pitch to Schuba, a curveball drops
- 1:50:22on the inside corner for a strike. Boy, look
- 1:50:25at those umpires in the stands. The order of
- 1:50:31the three men are going to get paid for doing
- 1:50:33their job today of crawling balls and strikes
- 1:50:35and outs. We're safe. Messers Rob, Barlich, and
- 1:50:41Donna Teller. Strike one on Schuba, left hand
- 1:50:46hitter. There's a pitch. 11. One look ahead,
- 1:51:01Jimmy Russell, the switch hitter, is out on deck.
- 1:51:04Here's the pitch. Kershaw, a little weak foul
- 1:51:07ball, hit off first base. Harshman under it and
- 1:51:09takes it for the out. No two outs. Schuba, uppercutting
- 1:51:15the curve ball, fouled it up and into the myth
- 1:51:18of Jack Harshman, the giant first baseman. Jimmy
- 1:51:24Russell, what a big day yesterday. having a little
- 1:51:26trouble today, get into a double play, and walked.
- 1:51:31Also had a little action in the outfield, a fly
- 1:51:35ball that he missed. Judge dropped in front of
- 1:51:37him for a base hit on Blockman's bat in the first
- 1:51:39inning. And then Stanky, who is not a speed merchant,
- 1:51:42picked up and moved from first to second on a
- 1:51:44fly ball that was hit to not too deep center
- 1:51:46field. Well, all of that will be forgotten. Mr.
- 1:51:52Russell can unload here. Two up. New York five,
- 1:51:59Brooklyn one. Mattanow is finished up on the
- 1:52:02bullpen and is walking in towards the Dodger
- 1:52:04bench. Kramer into his lineup, kicks him down
- 1:52:07the pitch outside, ball one. Also, two for five
- 1:52:16in this young season. Figures out that the count
- 1:52:19is at 400. Switch at her batting left at it against
- 1:52:27Kramer's right hand stuff. Outfield swung the
- 1:52:31way around in the right. Infield laying back.
- 1:52:35Right side very deep. Harshman stacking. Ball
- 1:52:38on. Kramer ready to gale off another one. Here's
- 1:52:42the pitch. High outside fastball. Ball 2. Lease
- 1:52:48at first base. Campanella at second and Bobby
- 1:52:50Morgan at third with 2 down. That's the picture
- 1:52:52here. Saturday afternoon, crowd looking off.
- 1:52:56And post cereal, sending it all your way. And
- 1:53:01friends of you, tried Sugarcrisp yet? Boy, if
- 1:53:05you haven't, you're missing a sensational breakfast
- 1:53:08treat. Rock of the country, Sugarcrisp, another
- 1:53:14great post cereal. The Dodgers will take them
- 1:53:31anywhere they can get them. This you know, the
- 1:53:35most heated rivalry in baseball. Josh and Brooklyn.
- 1:53:44Now the three nothing pitch and it is on the
- 1:53:46call for a strike. Jamer hanging on the edge
- 1:53:51out there. He's got a four on lead. Five to one
- 1:53:55New York. after picking off his side from Milton
- 1:54:04Stock, coaching down third base, steps back in
- 1:54:06again. Kramer now goes into his pumping motion.
- 1:54:14Count three one, here's the pitch. Go after three
- 1:54:22bad pitches, Kramer. He's got two good ones in
- 1:54:25there, one a fastball and the other a curve.
- 1:54:27They run the count all the way down and now the
- 1:54:29marrying arrival starts. Full count. Two outs,
- 1:54:32bases loaded, they'll be off and running at every
- 1:54:35field. Morgan at third, Cavanaugh at second,
- 1:54:46Reese at first, two outs. Everybody goes, Kramer
- 1:54:49into his full windup, here comes the pitch, and
- 1:54:51it is low for ball four. Jimmy Russell just walking
- 1:55:33with a Saks Soap. Austin Morgan. And you must
- 1:55:38credit Russell with a run about it in, by the
- 1:55:40way. They're keeping score. That brings up Jackie
- 1:55:43Robinson, the National League defending batting
- 1:55:45team. What a big blow to get the Dodger right
- 1:55:50back in this one. 5 -2 New York. Kramer, rattling
- 1:55:56around in trouble out there. Big Jack kicks him
- 1:55:59down a pitch way outside. Coming up for New York,
- 1:56:19Mata, who will go on to pitch the top of the
- 1:56:22sixth inning, is already ready. Sitting on the
- 1:56:25Dodger bench right now. Robinson up. All for
- 1:56:32two today. Go outside curveball, ball two. Jack
- 1:56:40Brown at the second base, and the third in his
- 1:56:43two previous trips. hitting at 462, 6 for 13.
- 1:56:53Now this is the spot to bump out his 7th hit.
- 1:58:22Here's the pitch. One -on -a -miss. Carl Carter
- 1:58:25check his swing to put her on. Strike one. Jimmy
- 1:58:28Russell with a tying Kelly is at third base.
- 1:58:31We have another final score. Bob Elliott came
- 1:58:34up with a home run in the last half of the eighth
- 1:58:36inning to beat the Phillies three to two. And
- 1:58:40Warren Spahn gets his second win of the year.
- 1:58:43So Elliott is a big man in the hub tonight. He's
- 1:58:48been busting the Dodgers now. two to the Dodgers
- 2:00:11and two to the Braves in their opening series
- 2:00:13of Polo Grounds. And with Kramer pitching along
- 2:00:16behind a 5 -1 lead, things were rather pleasant
- 2:00:19in the giant dugout. And then... Jones is tuning
- 2:00:30up out there in the hill. Tell you a little bit
- 2:00:33about him. Jones in 42 ballgames last year with
- 2:00:38New York won 15 and lost 12. He had an overall
- 2:00:41average of 3 .35. He was born out in Tecumseh,
- 2:00:45Nebraska. Now makes his home at York, Nebraska.
- 2:00:48Six footer, about 180 pounds. Right hander. This
- 2:00:54is his first relief job of the year. Started
- 2:00:57a ball game and lost it. So he has a record of
- 2:01:00no wins in one setback. Well, he's all tuned
- 2:01:04up. Says he's ready. We'll see. his first time
- 2:01:12up with one out in the second inning and struck
- 2:01:13out the last time as the man he'll be serving
- 2:01:15him up to. Jack Maddow has picked half a ball
- 2:01:18game already and the goal pen is going at it
- 2:01:20again. All these days in football. Coach Cereals
- 2:01:32happy to be sending a disgorgy. 5 -5 tie on the
- 2:01:35last half of the fifth inning. Ball game two
- 2:01:39hours and fifteen minutes old. field deep and
- 2:01:44around to the left as Big Hodges comes up. Robinson
- 2:01:46down off third base. Rullo off at first. Down
- 2:01:50the pitch. Swung on and fouled back. The Dodgers
- 2:01:54have their two running champions out there. It's
- 2:01:57a good spot for a double stealer. They want to
- 2:01:59work it that way. But they got a good hitter
- 2:02:01up there too. If you were a manager, what would
- 2:02:05you do? Two out. If I was a manager, I'd look
- 2:02:11for my paycheck every month. You know there are
- 2:02:30six new managers in the National League this
- 2:02:32year. I'll just big strong Hoosier Robinson jumping
- 2:02:43off third the pitch way outside gets away from
- 2:02:45Washington no advance over ball to strike one.
- 2:02:50Last half of the fifth inning. The Dodgers with
- 2:02:52four runs have tied the ball game. 5 -5. Robinson
- 2:03:01still taking that long, jumping lead down off
- 2:03:04third base. Henry Thompson, the third baseman
- 2:03:06of New York, is playing back rather deep. Jones
- 2:03:10standing on the mound, now goes to his stretch
- 2:03:12position. Robinson jogging around the short of
- 2:03:16first base, and Perillo is the one that has to
- 2:03:18get back. Carl was rather half -fascinated by
- 2:03:24Robinson's jumping off third base and Jones wheeled
- 2:03:27her out and dealt one over to Harshman and Carl
- 2:03:30had to go back hands first. Now Carl leads the
- 2:03:35way again Robinson out off third base. There's
- 2:03:38a 2 -1 pitch. One -on -a -miss. Oh Hodges took
- 2:03:44a cut at that one like he was going to knock
- 2:03:45it over to Eastern Parkway. Ball two, strike
- 2:03:53two. For those of you around the country, Eastern
- 2:03:59Parkway is about four blocks from here. Jones
- 2:04:09ready. Here's the two -twoer. Inside, ball three.
- 2:04:16So, with two out, Marullo will be going. Robinson,
- 2:04:19of course, at third base, will have to play it
- 2:04:20safe. Henry Thompson, the third baseman, out
- 2:04:23comes over to talk to Sheldon Jones. The official
- 2:04:30pay the tennis today, 19 ,067. Harold Parrott,
- 2:04:35the traveling secretary of the Dodgers, gracefully
- 2:04:38bringing it up here. Now Robinson with a big
- 2:04:44long, catalyzing lead down off third base. Oh,
- 2:04:48here's the pitch, Grillo goes. Four big tallies
- 2:04:59on one, two, three base hits. One giant error,
- 2:05:04a costly one that opened the door on the Dodgers,
- 2:05:06sneaked in for four, and there were two walks.
- 2:05:11They were costly, too. One of them forced in
- 2:05:13a run. Kept the inning alive, shut it up for
- 2:05:16Robinson's single to get two in, and Perillo's
- 2:05:19single in the right field to score Russell with
- 2:05:21a tying run. And that is that. Top half of the
- 2:05:29sixth inning. Jack Fanta now pitching for the
- 2:05:34Dodgers. Well, Fanta just need to throw many
- 2:05:37warm -up pitches. All he's hoping is that he
- 2:05:41didn't lose his ball game right down in the bullpen.
- 2:05:43It's been done before. It's like the old gag
- 2:05:47they used to tell on Bill Terry in the last game
- 2:05:48of the World Series when he had Carl Hubble down
- 2:05:50in the bullpen and never used it. They lost the
- 2:05:53ball game. The question was, what were they saving
- 2:05:56Hubble for? Certainly not the senior prom. The
- 2:06:04first pitch now to the big first baseman, Jack
- 2:06:06Marshman, is outside ball one. Banna, you know,
- 2:06:09who was a hero on the last day at Philadelphia
- 2:06:11last year, coming out on relief after Big Newcomb
- 2:06:14had blown a five -round lead. Banna went on to
- 2:06:17pitch the Dodgers to a 9 -7 win and the pennant.
- 2:06:21Gets his turnball over the outside corner for
- 2:06:23a strike. Banna had a little, uh, teeth trouble
- 2:06:26too this year. have a couple of impacted wisdom
- 2:06:29teeth pulled. I think he's got one more to come.
- 2:06:33Turn him high outside ball two. And he had the
- 2:06:36aches and the pains. Didn't do much work down
- 2:06:38at Dodger Town at Barrow Beach. So he had to
- 2:06:43work himself in the shade, but he's all right
- 2:06:44now. Kicks him down to pitch full on and foul
- 2:06:49away over to the Dodger Batracks. Coach Serial,
- 2:06:55your host today, friends. Harshman, Weston, and
- 2:07:00Jones will be coming up with that order. Nobody's
- 2:07:02throwing down at the New York bullpen. That'll
- 2:07:04be the order. Outfield shifted around to the
- 2:07:07right. Turbol, it takes Harshman's bat and then
- 2:07:11gets behind. Two and two. All two strike two.
- 2:07:39Harsman and Lafayette at first base doing spring
- 2:07:42training at Phoenix. And on their swing through
- 2:07:44the country and back to the polo gown. And with
- 2:07:49Harsman a -wavin' like that, Mr. Lafayette may
- 2:07:51get a chance. Western the catcher up. Looks at
- 2:07:55the curve ball over for a strike. Mather has
- 2:07:59a very deceptive sidearm wheeling delivery. He
- 2:08:03really cross bars it. Curve ball, sharply breaking
- 2:08:07outside, ball one. Clarence Plotdyland, who won
- 2:08:11his first start in the Major Leagues down at
- 2:08:15Philadelphia the other day, is going down on
- 2:08:18the bullpen now. Kerps went out and fouled back
- 2:08:20up over our heads. Metta was in 48 ballgames
- 2:08:24with Brooklyn by a Bureau and Tennant lost 6.
- 2:08:28From Hutchinson, Kansas, 6 '2 .5, 171 pounds.
- 2:08:33That's his fastball. Maybe the long warm -up
- 2:08:42is the thing you need. Stuck out Harshman and
- 2:08:46Ruscombe, and now goes to work on the pitcher.
- 2:08:49Two out, top half of the sixth inning. Got a
- 2:08:525 -5 humdinger. Squirming here at Ebbets Field.
- 2:08:55Osterio sending it all your way. That is curveball
- 2:08:59to the pitcher. Sheldon Jones is blown away from
- 2:09:01ball one. Campanella back on the plate, handling
- 2:09:08Big Jack. Fastball gets in there for a call strike.
- 2:09:13One and one. That's a tough right field right
- 2:09:17now. Sun dropping down back to the stands. Prull
- 2:09:21has got his sunglasses on, you can bet. Another
- 2:09:24curve. Ball one, strike two. Chicago Cubs came
- 2:09:31up with five runs in the last half of the fifth
- 2:09:33inning against the Cardinals. And lead six to
- 2:09:37four. That's all right. When a pitcher pitches
- 2:09:46through a pitcher, it's curve, curve, curve.
- 2:09:51And that's all the Jack has been showing up here
- 2:09:53to Sheldon Jones. Now the 2 -2 pitch. Here it
- 2:09:58is. Swung on it. Right up and over our heads.
- 2:10:02We were ready to move. Johnny Dirt doesn't know
- 2:10:06which way to go here. It's straight up. He's
- 2:10:16wide open. Now the two tour against. Swung out
- 2:10:20and got it down a short. Reached up with it.
- 2:10:23The throw to first. Inside. And that is that.
- 2:10:26Bandits are down to put the Giants down. One,
- 2:10:29two, three. In the top half of the sixth inning.
- 2:10:33New York. Five and the Dodgers five. Friends,
- 2:10:38you may ask, have the Dodgers been improved over
- 2:10:40last year? Well, time alone can answer that one.
- 2:10:44Question number two. Have post cereals been improved?
- 2:10:49And the answer to that one is a good strong yes,
- 2:10:52in more ways than one. I take that great new
- 2:10:56triple wrap package. That, my friends, is what
- 2:10:59brings post cereals to your breakfast table,
- 2:11:01fresher than ever before. In fact, guaranteed
- 2:11:05fresh. There's a sealed inner wrap, and then
- 2:11:08there's the sealed carton itself, and the sealed
- 2:11:11outer wrap. Three separate wrappings. that bring
- 2:11:15you your post cereal so fresh they taste just
- 2:11:18toasted. So you try any one of our nourishing
- 2:11:21swell tasting post cereals and if you don't agree
- 2:11:24it's the freshest tasting cereal you ever enjoyed
- 2:11:27well post will give you triple your money back.
- 2:11:31That's fair enough isn't it? Remember then when
- 2:11:33you get post you get the most of everything good
- 2:11:36in cereals. So let's see what goes here now in
- 2:11:41the last half of the sixth. The Dodgers batted
- 2:11:42around the last time with Morgan starting it
- 2:11:44off. Let's see what they can do here. Right hand
- 2:11:47hitter. First push to Bobby is up high by Jones
- 2:11:50for ball one. Jones into his windup. Kicks come
- 2:12:01down another one and down goes Morgan. All up
- 2:12:04around the peak of his cap. Bobby's really been
- 2:12:07the Jack in the box for the Dodgers. He was up
- 2:12:10and down at Philadelphia. And boy was he moaning
- 2:12:14coming back on the bus to the hotel the other
- 2:12:16night when Big Hodges got up and slammed a home
- 2:12:20run in the left field seat. Morgan came up, the
- 2:12:22next man, and they low -bridged him. He said,
- 2:12:27what kind of a game is this? Hodges hits the
- 2:12:30home run and I take the ref for it. Pitch is
- 2:12:36way outside for ball three. Jones come down again
- 2:12:39and Morgan has to almost squat again. Ball four.
- 2:12:42High upstairs. So Jones walks the leadoff man
- 2:12:51for the Dodgers in the last half of the sixth
- 2:12:52inning. Bobby Morgan. Roy Cabanela comes up.
- 2:12:57Cabanela steps in now. Jones ready to work. Morgan
- 2:13:00taking his lead down off first base. Now the
- 2:13:05pitch to Cabanela. Swung on and hit the foul.
- 2:13:16hit the stick and then skidded back. Like a shot
- 2:13:19into the stands. Strike one. New York five. Brooklyn
- 2:13:26five. That's the way this one stands here in
- 2:13:29the last half of the sixth. Nobody out of Bobby
- 2:13:32Morgan on at first base. Here's a pitch Cabanela
- 2:13:34swings. What a reference. Strike two. Mario Kennedy.
- 2:13:40Who was originally scheduled to start today's
- 2:13:42ballgame is now up and throwing down on the bullpen.
- 2:13:51For some of their top men. A 5 -5 deadlock here.
- 2:13:55Throw to first base. Morgan back with a couple
- 2:13:56of quick steps. Jones holding a stretch. Pitches
- 2:14:05in to Roy. And it's high inside of Roy as they
- 2:14:07get down and away from him. Ball on strike two.
- 2:14:13Cabinella, right hand swinger. Got that big power.
- 2:14:17Three for nine. He's at one home run. Out of
- 2:14:22the pitch to Roy. He checks his swing on a curveball
- 2:14:25that dropped low outside. Ball two strike two.
- 2:14:31All the St. Louis Cardinals answered back after
- 2:14:34Chicago got five runs in the last half of the
- 2:14:35fifth inning. They came up with two of their
- 2:14:37own in the top half of the sixth inning. Got
- 2:14:41themselves up there in a 6 -6 deadlock. John
- 2:14:46Enfield in double play position. Harshman still
- 2:14:48holding the sack tightly against Bobby Morgan.
- 2:14:51Young rookie comes down with a short lead. Jones
- 2:14:54pitches into the plate. Over to Carl strike three.
- 2:14:58So he was serving up some dipsy do's here to
- 2:15:00Campanella and caught him looking. Carl strike
- 2:15:02three. And here comes Jack Mata. Carl Tansen
- 2:15:11walking up to his home plate. A pretty good hitting
- 2:15:15pitcher. One out Morgan waiting to be moved at
- 2:15:19first base. Same Bobby Morgan who won the most
- 2:15:24valuable player award of the International League
- 2:15:26and also the batting crowd. Been playing fine
- 2:15:29ball for the Dodgers all spring. Got off to a
- 2:15:32good start in the big leagues too. Curveball
- 2:15:34down under the knees, the big tall Fanta. Jack,
- 2:15:40as we told you, a big string bean, six two and
- 2:15:42a half, weighs about 170 pounds. Morgan with
- 2:15:48his lead again. Jones checks in. The pitch to
- 2:15:50the plate is high outside. Ball two. Sheldon,
- 2:15:57who will see a lot of relief work and starting
- 2:15:59assignments this year, has lost one ballgame.
- 2:16:04This is his first relief job. Thompson playing
- 2:16:09almost a straightaway center field. Don Miller,
- 2:16:12the right fielder, is going over towards right
- 2:16:14center. Jones ready to deliver 2 -0 to Banta.
- 2:16:17Does well. Ball three. The Giants 5 and the Dodgers
- 2:16:245. One down in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 2:16:28Post -serial, bringing it all to you. And mother,
- 2:16:32don't forget, Sugarcrisp. The new cereal sensation.
- 2:16:37Another fine post -serial. Banta with the count
- 2:16:41is way 3 -0. Will be taking. Jones now steps
- 2:16:45off the mound, looking out towards the left field
- 2:16:49bullpen. That end turn just takes one step out
- 2:16:54of the batter's box. Now he's back in again,
- 2:16:57and Jones ready to work. Morgan with his lead
- 2:16:59once more. Here's a three -hulling pitch. A one
- 2:17:01-side on four. The batter, without looking at
- 2:17:05the strike, is on at first base, and that pushes
- 2:17:07Morgan up a notch to second. Westrom goes to
- 2:17:12the mound, and Reese walks up to the plate. Reese
- 2:17:15up there. Dodges with two mates aboard. Pitch
- 2:17:18a pass ball down inside. Ball one. Morgan to
- 2:17:22open up with a walk. Strikeout by Campanella.
- 2:17:24Sam is in with another walk to Vanna. And the
- 2:17:27Dodgers have something cooking here. One out.
- 2:17:29Five -five tie. Jones. Waiting around. A little
- 2:17:36control difficulties right now. Check second
- 2:17:40base. Goes to Reese and Peewee takes down inside
- 2:17:42again. Ball two. Resetting at one eighty eight.
- 2:17:48Walked his last time up. Get into a forced play
- 2:17:50and fly to left field. And now DeRoscher has
- 2:17:58switched his full pen and has Kirby Higby and
- 2:18:03Andy Hanson up showing a couple of right handers.
- 2:18:06Jones pitches a plate swallow on a ground ball.
- 2:18:58Another pitching wide to him. Ball two. First
- 2:19:01bases open so they'll load him up with one out.
- 2:19:03Take a chance on getting the double play and
- 2:19:05getting out of the beginning. He sent the run
- 2:19:28in and got Jack the third with his double as
- 2:19:30a second base. And Schuba who had just intentionally
- 2:19:33passed at first and brings up switch hitting
- 2:19:35Jimmy Russell. Jones pitched to him. Curve in
- 2:19:38there for a strike. One out. The giant hitter
- 2:19:42to French now laying back. Looking for that double
- 2:19:44play ball and they can get it. The Dodgers leading
- 2:19:486 -5. One out. Last of the six. Jones pitch.
- 2:19:52Curve ball up tight against the Letters. strike
- 2:20:00one. Boy, this has been a humdinger. Seesaw up
- 2:20:03and down, hammer and songs all afternoon. Jones
- 2:20:07goes a curve, swung on, and dribble down along
- 2:20:09the first base line. Charge that bunt off the
- 2:21:02bat of Robinson and through the second base to
- 2:21:04Stanky in time. And they get Russell coming down
- 2:21:08from first base. The Dodgers move out in front.
- 2:21:11They get a run on a hit. They lead three men.
- 2:21:14And there were no giant errors. So at the end
- 2:21:18of sixth complete, the Dodgers out in front by
- 2:21:21the score of six to five. Now once again for
- 2:21:24posterios, here's the old redhead, Red Barker.
- 2:21:26Thank you, Connie. You've been sort of busy,
- 2:21:28haven't you? Oh, what a day. What a day. Well,
- 2:21:31for all you folks around the country, here we
- 2:21:33go into the seventh inning. Ed Stanky takes inside
- 2:21:35for ball one. Maybe you don't know how the Dodgers
- 2:21:37and the Johns play. Now you're beginning to find
- 2:21:39out. This is a pretty good sample. They just
- 2:21:41play all day and half the night. Of course, under
- 2:21:44the league rules, they can turn the lights on,
- 2:21:45keep on going. Pitch all over for a cause strong.
- 2:21:49One ball and one strike. Stanky first up in the
- 2:21:52seventh. Jack Bana, the third of Brooklyn's pitchers,
- 2:21:54and it's up to Bana to win or lose the game.
- 2:21:57It's a hit six five. Stanky swings, grinds it
- 2:21:59over third, out of the left field, sent for a
- 2:22:00base hit. Schubert blocks the ball, then has
- 2:22:03it get away from him. Stanky, however, holds
- 2:22:04up the first. Realizes he can't get the second,
- 2:22:06so it's just the hit. Stanky is single out of
- 2:22:10the left field, and the tying run is thus put
- 2:22:12off immediately by the Giants. Stanky's on for
- 2:22:14the third time today. Two walks and a base hit.
- 2:22:21Six five, Brooklyn. Heidi Lachman stepping in
- 2:22:26and looks down to the third base coaching box
- 2:22:29where the MGR de Rocha is. Gets the orders, whether
- 2:22:32to butt, what to do. Lance Plotbilin, young rookie
- 2:22:36right -hander, who won the second game of the
- 2:22:38season for the Dodgers in the bullpen. Lachman
- 2:22:41swings, the line drive. steps on the bag, wow,
- 2:23:04just like that. Happened so quickly, DeRosha
- 2:23:06didn't even know he didn't have any base runner
- 2:23:08anymore. That's almost as quick as the way Post
- 2:23:14Sugarcrisp was selling. That's the brand new
- 2:23:17one, boy it has taken over. Okay, here we go
- 2:23:21now with third baseman Henry Thompson who made
- 2:23:23the key error back in Brooklyn's four on fifth
- 2:23:25inning. Left hand hitter, takes a curve low end
- 2:23:28side ball one. Second double play in the game
- 2:23:32for the Dodgers, now fourth of the year. Hodges,
- 2:23:36unassisted on the line drive, first baseman.
- 2:23:40There's a high drive, it's deep out toward right
- 2:23:42center field. It's going way back out there.
- 2:23:44It is over in the back of the avenue for a big
- 2:23:46home run. And it's a brand new ball game, and
- 2:23:49Henry Thompson knocks it. And to his home will
- 2:23:52be sent a case of sugar crisp. Oh, he hit it
- 2:23:57high over that 40 -foot screen in right center
- 2:23:59field. So it should all even at seven and seven.
- 2:24:05This gives Thompson a run for a perfect day.
- 2:24:07He had a single and two walks and now he has
- 2:24:09his home run. And this gives Henry five hits
- 2:24:12out of 10 at -batch. It's his fourth run batted
- 2:24:15in and third home run of the season. He's leading
- 2:24:17the Giants in the extra races. Don Muehler out.
- 2:24:20Batter's pitch is a curve over for a cross -fright.
- 2:24:25Brand new ball game. Big home run by Henry Thompson.
- 2:24:28He got it. Ball hit down the right field corner,
- 2:24:35Corello goes over, jumps and makes a one minute
- 2:24:36catch at the base of the country ball. And the
- 2:24:40Giants really hit the paddle very hard, don't
- 2:24:44they come out of the air with just one run. There
- 2:24:46was body up there, hit that ball. Double play
- 2:24:48ball to the back of it, one run, two hits. So
- 2:24:51she's all tied, 6 -6. So the ball game is bigger
- 2:24:55and better than ever, isn't it? And folks, the
- 2:24:581950 Dodger yearbook is bigger and better than
- 2:25:02ever. And it's brought to you by Post Serials.

- 2:25:43coming your way within a couple of days. It's
- 2:25:46the very same book that sells at Ebbets Field
- 2:25:48for 50 cents. Carl Prelo, first up last to the
- 2:25:517th. Sheldon Jones, the right -hander on the
- 2:25:53mound for New York. His game to win or lose,
- 2:25:54too. 6 -6 tie, curve, low outside, ball wide.
- 2:25:58A couple of young, hard -throwing right -handers
- 2:26:00are going at it now. Gladys Gooding at the electric
- 2:26:04organ here at Ebbets Field. Just played my old
- 2:26:05Kentucky home as a tribute to Mr. Chandler, who's
- 2:26:09attending today's game. Fastball over, far far
- 2:26:13strike, one and one. Johns, right -hander delivers,
- 2:26:17Prowler swings and misses. Strike two, one ball,
- 2:26:20two strikes, one and two. Jake Pitlin, coaching
- 2:26:25on his 56th birthday at Perch Base. Northern
- 2:26:27Stock, who happens also to be Eddie Stanky's
- 2:26:30father -in -law. Pushing it third. Sheldon Johns,
- 2:26:35who a couple of years ago was a professional
- 2:26:36fighter, then decided baseball was a better athletic
- 2:26:40enterprise. Sheldon Johns on the mound. Dog,
- 2:26:46brown eyes. Gorillo. Leans in. Carey with it
- 2:26:50outside, and it is ball two. Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:26:55Two and two. Pittsburgh has defeated Cincinnati,
- 2:27:00nine to two. The Braves will now win three out
- 2:27:03of three. Knocked off the Phillies. Three to
- 2:27:05two. Pass ball inside and the count is called.
- 2:27:10Three and two to Pirello. Goll is one for three.
- 2:27:13He's single in the fifth inning. Tied the ball
- 2:27:16game at that point. Five and five. Dodgers had
- 2:27:20a run in the sixth to go ahead six -five. And
- 2:27:22Henry Thompson just smacked one for the Sugarcrisp
- 2:27:24to tie it up six -six. Cross -check three. Pirello
- 2:27:28is caught to the pitch on the outside. John strikes
- 2:27:31him up. And gives Sheldon three strikeouts. Grosch
- 2:27:35is sticking right along with him. I guess because
- 2:27:37you think if you haven't got anybody nearly as
- 2:27:39good in the both then. And it's fate's dividend
- 2:27:41because he got out of a mess of trouble in the
- 2:27:42sixth inning. Had the bases loaded when he went
- 2:27:45out and didn't allow any further scoring. Gil
- 2:27:51Hodges with one, four, three. And that was a
- 2:27:55home run. And it's fresh that bat today. Takes
- 2:27:58a good curve ball out for a false strike. The
- 2:28:00whole infield is now caught in the full shadow
- 2:28:03of the stands with the sun going down behind
- 2:28:05them. Center field and right field is still in
- 2:28:08sun. Right hander pitches high outside ball one.
- 2:28:14One ball one strike. No action neither clubs
- 2:28:18go pin. The Yankees didn't score in the ninth
- 2:28:23inning. They're going into 10th inning Washington
- 2:28:26New York tied 6 -6. And then the Jones pitches
- 2:28:32and hard to hit the ground ball, back pass the
- 2:28:34ball, it's up to Doc, he goes over to first base,
- 2:28:38just in time, has it up. Go up to first. Two
- 2:28:44men up, two men retiring. The even -up status,
- 2:28:496 '6 is this, back to seven. And Bob Morgan,
- 2:28:53who's had one hit for two at best today. Rookie,
- 2:28:56he's the batting champion in the international
- 2:28:58league last year, he's hitting... 533 right now,
- 2:29:028 for 15. And then the Jones pitches and Mr.
- 2:29:06Curve a little outside with this quickie right
- 2:29:09hand batter. Long Bob Morgan. Infield is back.
- 2:29:22Curve is good. fighting desperately when they
- 2:29:36first came out of four this year. Balling takes
- 2:29:39a care about side ball too. Dodgers fighting
- 2:29:42just as grimly. They make a three straight victory
- 2:29:45for them. They lost opening game for Philadelphia.
- 2:29:50There is no quarter ask and there's certainly
- 2:29:52none given when these two clubs lock horns, I
- 2:29:55tell you that. 2 -1 pitch. Fast ball is good
- 2:29:59at the knees. Fourth ball strike two. Turn two.
- 2:30:18Two and two. Pitch high inside on the hands of
- 2:30:28all three. Three balls, two strikes. Morgan,
- 2:30:36with a very relaxed ball player. Holds it back,
- 2:30:42back. A lot of cat -like stillness. The pitch
- 2:30:44is... it down in order. One, two, three in the
- 2:30:51last half of the seventh inning. That's four
- 2:30:53strikeouts for Sheldon, A for Abel, or available
- 2:30:58Jones. And here we go into the eighth inning.
- 2:31:00The center fielder by the Thompson, first step
- 2:31:02for the Giants, taking the batter's spare for
- 2:31:04a called strike. Spare ball swung on and there's
- 2:31:06a high fly in the short center. Russell coming
- 2:31:08in, he's under it. And he's got it. So that is
- 2:31:13all for center fielder by the Thompson. First
- 2:31:15step from the eighth inning. Alvin Dawes, shortstop
- 2:31:19who's gone over. two. Right hand batter. Kerr
- 2:31:25has swung on line right back to the middle out
- 2:31:26of the center field and it's a base hit for a
- 2:31:28dog. He's right on around first takes a big turn
- 2:31:31and holds up the throw coming in from Russell.
- 2:31:34Second base shortstop. The dog comes up the first
- 2:31:38hit of the day single in the center. Rookie Jack
- 2:31:43Hoshman falls under left hand hitting first baseman
- 2:31:46is now up to New York hitting seventh on the
- 2:31:47batting card. in the stop position. Delivers.
- 2:31:52There's a ball hit high out into the right center
- 2:31:54field. Russell, the center fielder, getting under
- 2:31:56it. Dog tagging up at first. There's the catch.
- 2:31:59And Dog's touch, second and holds on. Russell's
- 2:32:01losing time, getting that ball to second this
- 2:32:02time. Stanky got the jump on him and went in
- 2:32:07there, if you recall, after the ball had been
- 2:32:10caught in the third inning. So two men are going
- 2:32:15in the game. And catch your Western. First swim,
- 2:32:19right hand hitter. Takes a cut of the curve,
- 2:32:22hits it down to a third. Morgan up with it on
- 2:32:23a big foul and throws to face him. Down the ball
- 2:32:25for the Giants after the eighth inning. No runs,
- 2:32:30one hit. And it still remains locked at 6 and
- 2:32:346. Now we're moving into the last half of the
- 2:32:40eighth inning. It's the 6 -6 ball game. Jones
- 2:32:44on the mound for the Giants. Clarence Pudd -Beland.
- 2:32:47Right -hander in the bullpen for the Dodgers.
- 2:32:51Campanella up hitting 8. Banner is supposed to
- 2:32:53hit next, but maybe a pinch hitter. We'll see.
- 2:32:56So, curveball right over for a ball struck. Man
- 2:33:02of the shot, of course, will not make up his
- 2:33:04mind whether he wishes to hit for a batter or
- 2:33:06not. We'll see what happens. Campanella. Pitch
- 2:33:10is high inside. Oh wow. One and one. Kerr blue
- 2:33:15outside to Roy. Ball 2. Questions fall all the
- 2:33:19way. Hoshman at first base, Banky at second,
- 2:33:21Dawkins short, and the third baseman Henry Thompson,
- 2:33:24who's becoming quite a ball player for the Giants.
- 2:33:26Left field, Whitey Lockman in center, Bobby Thompson,
- 2:33:29and the right fielder is Don Mueller. Two on
- 2:33:34pitch, fastball through there, and it's two and
- 2:33:37two. Two balls, two strikes. Cappanella, stocky,
- 2:33:44very strong, and very durable. 2 -2 pitch is
- 2:33:52hung on a miss. That's 3. The Roy is stuck out.
- 2:33:56Well, let's see what manager Shotten does. Does
- 2:33:59he want Banner to hit? Or does he want to hit
- 2:34:02a 4? It's gonna be Jack Banner because, says
- 2:34:06Mr. Shotten, here at this late stage, 6 -6. I'll
- 2:34:09go over him and pitch it. Happiest step back
- 2:34:15in the left. Banner left hand hitter. Strong
- 2:34:17ball hit down the first base. Juggle by Hodgkin.
- 2:34:19Tick -tock. He can't pick it up. Hoshman catches
- 2:34:23up to the ball and he's tied for the narrow.
- 2:34:25The second tight error of the day and Batter
- 2:34:27is on first base to the boot. The matter of whether
- 2:34:31Tom Lyre, if he would walk in the sixth inning,
- 2:34:33you would recall. Now he gets on through the
- 2:34:36error of young Jack Hoshman. Peewee Rees up,
- 2:34:42Jack Batter on it first, a 6 -6 tie. Just how
- 2:34:46long the game goes depends a lot, of course,
- 2:34:48on what Brooklyn does here in the last D18. Man,
- 2:34:52these ball games are just as tough as taxes,
- 2:34:54you know it. Whoa! High inside, gets up the catcher's
- 2:34:57glove, down the catcher's glove. Banner and Peewee
- 2:34:59dropped to get out of the way of a high inside
- 2:35:01fastball, and Weston couldn't come up with it.
- 2:35:04Charged a wild pitch, and Banner, the possible
- 2:35:06winning run, goes to second base. Now Jones loaded
- 2:35:09the pitch. Peewee cuts to the high, pop fly in
- 2:35:13the short left field. Shortstop Dogg is out.
- 2:35:15And he grabs it for out number two, and Banner
- 2:35:19stays put at second base. a series of a combination
- 2:35:23of an error and a foul put. Therese pops up to
- 2:35:26short, and George Schuba gets another opportunity.
- 2:35:30George has not been hitting, and if he's not
- 2:35:31careful, he's going to be shoot, shoot, Schuba
- 2:35:34to the bench, and Gene Homanski back in lefty.
- 2:35:36Schuba has one hit for 10. He has not looked
- 2:35:40completely sure in lefty. Oh, in other words,
- 2:35:42he's been quite tense. He had a big opportunity.
- 2:35:47If you recall, in the fifth inning, with the
- 2:35:48bases loaded and one out, and he fouled out to
- 2:35:50the first baseman. He's 0 -2 today. A 10 batter.
- 2:35:55Outfield toward right. Johns pitches. Curve low
- 2:35:59outside for ball one. This could be quite a pivotal
- 2:36:02outback for Schubert. Of course, it may be that
- 2:36:04he won't get anything too good to hit at the
- 2:36:06first base open. However, Jim Russell, who follows,
- 2:36:10I think the judge regarded him more dangerous
- 2:36:12hitter, so I expect he'll be pitching to George.
- 2:36:15However, will Sue know? Things sort of quiet
- 2:36:19the second to three. Do not remain quiescent
- 2:36:22very long around Ebbets Field here in Flatbush.
- 2:36:25The manager on the jam will go out to the pitchers
- 2:36:27and hit them on the mound and say, now listen,
- 2:36:30you know who's up there hitting those two. All
- 2:36:32right, now listen. Don't walk, but don't give
- 2:36:35them anything good to swing on. That's what Fitz
- 2:36:40Heman says McGraw used to send word out about.
- 2:36:42Swung on the line, driving it fast into the right
- 2:36:45field corner for a base hit. Shuber comes in
- 2:36:49to second base and holds up with a double. And
- 2:36:52it was a privilege at bat all the way around.
- 2:36:54And Bookman was out in 5th, 9th, 7th, or 6th.
- 2:36:5713th run of the game. So Shuber doubles inside
- 2:37:04first. That's going to run his first run of the
- 2:37:07year. And Jack Battle, who got onto the arrow,
- 2:37:11scores. That's the seventh run for the Dodgers,
- 2:37:15and I know DeRosha must be raging because of
- 2:37:17the seven Brooklyn runs, only two out of his
- 2:37:19four is earned. The other five are unearned.
- 2:37:23Now the batter is the switcher to Jim Russell.
- 2:37:28Andy Hanson, tall young right -hander from Lakewood,
- 2:37:31Florida is in the bullpen now for the Giants.
- 2:37:36The Chicago Cubs came up with a run in the last
- 2:37:38half the ninth inning and beat the St. Louis
- 2:37:40Cardinals for the second straight time seven
- 2:37:42to six and the Cardinals have now lost their
- 2:37:44last four ball game. Pitch, fast ball high and
- 2:37:49side ball one. One no pitch, put on and bowled
- 2:37:55back. The Cubs have beaten the Cardinals seven
- 2:37:58to six. Paulette who came on in the eighth inning
- 2:38:01is the losing pitcher for St. Louis. The Braves
- 2:38:04knock off the Phillies 3 to 2, and the Pirates
- 2:38:07beat the Reds 9 to 2. And Washington has just
- 2:38:09beaten the Yankees in the 10th inning, 7 to 6.
- 2:38:13In 7 to 6, Brooklyn, Russell cuts, fouled it
- 2:38:16back, and it's a ball and two strikes. So things
- 2:38:20are rapidly coming to a rather dramatic denouement
- 2:38:23all over the baseball picture this afternoon.
- 2:38:26Washington hangs on and knocks off the Yankees,
- 2:38:287 to 6, in 10 minutes. At the end of 10 and a
- 2:38:34half innings, it's a 5 -5 tie between the Red
- 2:38:36Sox and the Athletics. Detroit has just beaten
- 2:38:38Chicago 5 -0. Hootman pitches to shut up. Russell
- 2:38:42takes a fast back three, kicks about it, but
- 2:38:45the ball, and so ends the last half of the eighth
- 2:38:47inning here at Brooklyn. That's the fifth strikeout
- 2:38:50for Jones, and it's a run for the Dodgers on
- 2:38:53a hit. One giant error, which again, was decisive.
- 2:38:59So the Giants coming into the top of ninth, the
- 2:39:01run behind, Brooklyn 8 -7 -6. Pete Milne, rookie
- 2:39:07left hand hitting outfielder, is going to hit
- 2:39:09for Sheldon Jones to start the ninth inning.
- 2:39:11And Jack Madder on the mound for Brooklyn delivers.
- 2:39:13Call strike, fast ball on the outside. That'll
- 2:39:20works. Milne hits the curve ball down the first,
- 2:39:22up with his hardy arms over to the bag. He's
- 2:39:25there for the outfielder. So Milne, hitting for
- 2:39:31Jones, is retired, commencing the ninth inning.
- 2:39:38Dodgers seven. Giants six. Top of the order,
- 2:39:44Ed Stanky. Stanky crosses, right hand hitter.
- 2:39:49Swings, there's a five ball hit back at the center
- 2:39:51field. Russell going back, still going back.
- 2:39:53Kearns makes the catch. Two -one -one. So the
- 2:39:57Giants run behind, are down to their last out.
- 2:40:00Dodgers seven, the Giants six. This is going
- 2:40:02to be a tough four game every inch of the way.
- 2:40:16Tipped that whistling line drive and Hodges with
- 2:40:19those fine hands of his, turns it into an immediate
- 2:40:21double play in the seventh inning. Lachman hitting
- 2:40:23the three -sixteen, six for nineteen. Batters,
- 2:40:30that is. Takes a side from Campanella. Throws.
- 2:40:34There's a high pop fly. They sit on the left
- 2:40:36center fielder, Russell. The center fielder gets
- 2:40:38under it, gets under it. He's got it. Check the
- 2:40:49runs, hits, and errors, and the other scores
- 2:40:51for you just a second. But you know, one thing
- 2:40:54these Dodgers put a premium on is speed. Yes,
- 2:40:57sir, they're running this ball club in either
- 2:40:59league. And they need to stay that way, too,
- 2:41:01by keeping in top physical condition. And that
- 2:41:03most certainly includes getting nourishing meals.
- 2:41:06In fact, to quote the boss in these parts, Bryce
- 2:41:09Shotten, if you ask me, says Barney, eating proper
- 2:41:13meals is only ordinary common sense. For ballplayers
- 2:41:16or for anybody. Who has work to do? Well, that's
- 2:41:20why I manage a shot and agrees when we say, begin
- 2:41:23the day the right way with the right kind of
- 2:41:25breakfast. A breakfast that includes fruit or
- 2:41:28fruit juice, bread and butter, beverage and a
- 2:41:30cereal. That way you're getting the kind of a
- 2:41:33start you need to keep going right through the
- 2:41:35morning. And I say, do as so many of the Dodgers
- 2:41:38do. Make that cereal in your breakfast a post
- 2:41:41cereal. Because there is good solid nourishment
- 2:41:46in every one of these great P .O .S .T. Post
- 2:41:49Serials. Remember that you get the most when
- 2:41:52you get post. For the Dodgers today, their third
- 2:41:56straight win, seven runs on seven hits and no
- 2:42:04errors. And for the Giants, six runs, eight hits
- 2:42:07and two errors. And those two errors made possible
- 2:42:09five earn -earn runs as they are technically
- 2:42:12scored. The winning pitcher is Jack Bannas, his
- 2:42:14first decision of the year. The losing pitch
- 2:42:16is of course Jones who now hasn't won his last
- 2:42:19two and for the Giants this gives them an all
- 2:42:23-for -four record for the season which of course
- 2:42:24is very tough for the Polo Grounders and for
- 2:42:27De Rocha. For the Dodgers after losing opening
- 2:42:29day this is their third straight success. Now
- 2:42:33very quickly around the post scoreboard in the
- 2:42:36National League everything else is complete the
- 2:42:38Cubs beat the Cardinals 7 -6 for the run in the
- 2:42:41last of the ninth inning. Boston with Elliott
- 2:42:44hitting a home run of the eighth with one on,
- 2:42:46beat the Phillies three to two, and Pittsburgh
- 2:42:49had an easy time knocking off Cincinnati nine
- 2:42:52to two. In the American League, Washington defeated
- 2:42:55the Yankees in the 10th inning, seven to six.
- 2:43:00Detroit had Todd Hootman put a shutout and knock
- 2:43:03off Chicago five to nothing. At the end of three
- 2:43:08and a half innings, it is Cleveland over the
- 2:43:10St. Louis Browns, five to one. And in the Boston
- 2:43:13Athletic game, they've gone into the 11th inning
- 2:43:15tied at 5 and 5. So, our friends, that is that.
- 2:43:22And we hope that you have enjoyed being with

- 2:43:29quite a place. So, for you folks all around the

- 2:44:02it. And if you have... Remember that you say

- 2:44:19Say, if you're one of the folks who haven't tried
- 2:44:21post -sugar crisp yet, man, be sure to look for
