- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to A Peak Inside Gator Football. Allie Peak here.
- 0:04Speaker 2: I'm going to bring you guys on a little bit
- 0:06Speaker 2: of a bumpy ride in the car, but I wanted
- 0:08Speaker 2: to get this recap out to you. This video is,
- 0:11Speaker 2: of course, presented by PrizePix. Don't forget, new users can
- 0:14Speaker 2: download our app, use the code HMA, play a $ 5 lineup.
- 0:19Speaker 1: And if you win, you'll get $ 150 in lineups instantly. Okay.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Florida Gators beat the Campbell Camels 52-3 last night. The
- 0:30Speaker 2: Gators are 2-0, and through two games of the John
- 0:33Speaker 2: Summerall era, Florida has scored 118 points. So there is
- 0:39Speaker 2: a ton to like right now. But I do think
- 0:42Speaker 2: this game gave us a pretty good look at where
- 0:44Speaker 2: this team is after two weeks.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Special teams? Guys, you know I was excited.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I'm wearing my Make Special Teams Great Again shirt, and
- 0:52Speaker 2: John Galante has done just that. The offense is really
- 0:57Speaker 2: efficient too, but we are going to talk a little
- 1:00Speaker 2: bit about the defense. I think they got better as
- 1:02Speaker 2: the game went along, and I still think that's the
- 1:04Speaker 2: biggest question mark heading into conference play. And based on
- 1:08Speaker 2: what Coach Summerall said after the game, I don't really
- 1:11Speaker 2: think this coaching staff would disagree with that. So let's
- 1:14Speaker 2: start with the biggest story of the night. And that
- 1:18Speaker 2: would be what Vernell Brown did. Special teams, he was ridiculous.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Two punt return touchdowns back-to-back. First one went 64 yards.
- 1:29Speaker 2: The second one went 70. Florida hasn't returned a punt
- 1:33Speaker 2: for a touchdown since Kadarius Toney did it against Kentucky
- 1:36Speaker 2: in 2020.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Feels like a lifetime ago.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Then BB3 does it twice in about three and a
- 1:44Speaker 2: half minutes. The last time a Florida player returned two
- 1:48Speaker 2: punts for touchdowns in the same game was Jack West
- 1:51Speaker 2: Green in 1996. It's pretty good company. But here's what
- 1:56Speaker 2: I think is important about this. That wasn't just BB3
- 1:59Speaker 2: catching two punts and being faster than everybody else. Florida
- 2:02Speaker 2: has clearly put a major emphasis on special teams under
- 2:06Speaker 2: coach Summerall. Summerall talked about it after the game. He
- 2:09Speaker 2: said they spend a ton of time on it. He
- 2:13Speaker 2: is personally involved in it. And both of those touchdown
- 2:16Speaker 2: returns actually came when Florida had punt black looks called. Basically,
- 2:21Speaker 2: Florida was trying to keep Campbell's protection tied up a
- 2:23Speaker 2: little bit longer, which gives Brown more room before the
- 2:26Speaker 2: coverage gets downfield. Then you give the ball to a
- 2:30Speaker 2: guy like BB3 and you just let him go make
- 2:32Speaker 2: somebody miss. That's what happens when coaching and talent come together.
- 2:38Speaker 2: After the last few years, I think Gator fans can
- 2:40Speaker 2: appreciate the difference that we're seeing on special teams.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I saw you guys on social media.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I know everybody was very excited about it. We've spent
- 2:49Speaker 2: a lot of time talking about Florida special teams because
- 2:52Speaker 2: it's been bad. Too many guys on the field, the
- 2:55Speaker 2: wrong guys on the field, substitution issues, bad field position,
- 2:59Speaker 2: just mistakes. But now we're going to spend a lot
- 3:02Speaker 2: of time talking about special teams because Florida completely changed
- 3:06Speaker 2: the game with it.
- 3:07Speaker 1: It was 10-3.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Campbell was hanging around. Guys, I was a little bit
- 3:11Speaker 2: scared in that opening series. Florida wasn't playing badly, but
- 3:16Speaker 2: it wasn't exactly running him out of the stadium either.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Then VB3 takes one back and then Campbell has to
- 3:23Speaker 2: punt again just a couple minutes later. And for whatever reason,
- 3:26Speaker 2: I don't know what their special teams coach was thinking,
- 3:28Speaker 2: or maybe they were like us in the past and
- 3:30Speaker 2: they didn't have a special teams coach, but they.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Kick it to him again. touchdown again.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Now it's 24-3, and I think the game just felt
- 3:40Speaker 2: totally different from that point on. And Summerall talked about
- 3:43Speaker 2: that in the postgame, too. When you score on special teams,
- 3:47Speaker 2: your chances of winning go way up. If you're a
- 3:49Speaker 2: Gator fan, a longtime Gator fan, you know that Urban
- 3:52Speaker 2: Meyer used to say, block a punt, win the game.
- 3:54Speaker 1: You block a kick, you've.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Got a 90% chance of winning the football game. Special
- 4:01Speaker 2: teams' explosive plays matter. When you score twice, he basically
- 4:06Speaker 2: said you've then got to screw up the game to
- 4:08Speaker 2: lose it. Now, obviously, Ronell Brown is not going to
- 4:12Speaker 2: return two punts for touchdowns every week, and that's not
- 4:15Speaker 2: what the expectation is here. But can Florida consistently win
- 4:19Speaker 2: field position? Can they create returns? Can they pressure punters?
- 4:24Speaker 2: can they steal a possession or an explosive play in
- 4:27Speaker 2: the kicking game? Because if they can, that is going
- 4:30Speaker 2: to matter a lot more in big games like we've
- 4:33Speaker 2: got coming up next week at Auburn, much more than
- 4:36Speaker 2: it did against Campbell. The second thing that stands out
- 4:40Speaker 2: to me is just how efficient this offense has been.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Florida had another 500-yard game, 514 yards of offense to
- 4:46Speaker 2: be exact. But I'm almost more impressed with how they're
- 4:49Speaker 2: getting those yards than actually what that total yardage is.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Aaron Filo went 16 of 21 for 242 yards, two
- 4:57Speaker 2: touchdown passes, a rushing touchdown, no turnovers. And I do
- 5:02Speaker 2: think efficient is probably the best word for him right now.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And Semrel keeps using it, and I agree.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Philo isn't out there trying to make some ridiculous play
- 5:09Speaker 2: every snap, but he does look comfortable and he gets
- 5:12Speaker 2: the ball where it needs to go. And probably most importantly,
- 5:15Speaker 2: he's taking care of it. And when something does break down,
- 5:18Speaker 2: he's shown he can make something happen. I think that
- 5:20Speaker 2: Dallas Wilson touchdown was a great example of that. Philo
- 5:24Speaker 2: doesn't love what he sees there initially. So he gets
- 5:27Speaker 2: outside the pocket. He buys himself some time. He keeps
- 5:30Speaker 2: looking downfield. And then he finally finds Wilson for 40 yards.
- 5:34Speaker 2: And Dallas Wilson had a really good night. Five catches,
- 5:37Speaker 2: 104 yards, a touchdown. And guys, keep in mind, this
- 5:40Speaker 2: is week two where Eric Singleton didn't play. So you've
- 5:43Speaker 2: got BB3 making plays. You've got Dallas Wilson making plays. Eventually,
- 5:48Speaker 2: you will get Singleton back. It's a pretty good group
- 5:50Speaker 2: of weapons around your quarterback. And then, of course, you've
- 5:53Speaker 2: got Jaden Baugh, another 100-yard game, 14 carries for 136 yards,
- 5:58Speaker 2: two touchdowns, and that 75-yard run in the third quarter
- 6:02Speaker 2: where once he got through the line, there.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Was just absolutely nobody catching him.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Now that's three straight 100-yard games going back to last season.
- 6:09Speaker 2: What I really like is we're starting to see the
- 6:11Speaker 2: explosive runs from him. He had a 61 yarder against FAU.
- 6:15Speaker 2: He's got a 75 yarder against Campbell. Last year, his
- 6:19Speaker 2: longest run was 23 yards. So I think that's a
- 6:21Speaker 2: pretty significant difference. And you put all of this together,
- 6:25Speaker 2: and Florida isn't having to grind out these long drives
- 6:29Speaker 2: every single time. Now, they can do that. This offense
- 6:33Speaker 2: is built to do that. But they can also hit
- 6:35Speaker 2: you over the top. Faw can break one. BB3 can
- 6:38Speaker 2: make somebody miss. Dallas can play downfield. And through the
- 6:42Speaker 2: first three halves of the season, Florida scored on 18
- 6:46Speaker 2: of 19 offensive possessions.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Think about that. 18 of 19. I think that's pretty nuts. Now, again...
- 6:53Speaker 1: It's FAU and Campbell.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And I am not pretending that Florida just did this
- 6:57Speaker 2: against Georgia and Texas. We're going to find out a
- 7:01Speaker 2: whole lot more beginning next week. But these are the
- 7:05Speaker 2: games that you want to see the offense look like this.
- 7:08Speaker 2: You don't want to be struggling to figure out who
- 7:10Speaker 2: you are against Campbell. Florida has to look organized. They
- 7:13Speaker 2: have to finish drives. And they've done that. They've gotten
- 7:16Speaker 2: the ball to their playmakers. And Bilo looks like he's
- 7:19Speaker 2: in control of this offense. And I do think that's
- 7:21Speaker 2: exactly what we were hoping to see through two weeks.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Now let's talk about the defense. This is where the
- 7:29Speaker 2: real concern is, I think. But before we get to that,
- 7:32Speaker 2: we're going to take a short break to give some
- 7:34Speaker 2: love to Alumni Hall. Guys, if you have not stocked
- 7:39Speaker 2: up on game day gear yet, do it now.
- 7:42Speaker 1: What are you waiting for?
- 7:43Speaker 2: You can go visit their store on Archer Road in
- 7:46Speaker 2: Gainesville if you're going to be around for a game
- 7:47Speaker 2: or if you happen to live there, or you can
- 7:50Speaker 2: shop online, alumnihall.com. But don't forget to use our code.
- 7:54Speaker 1: It's PEAK15, P-E-E-K-1-5.
- 7:55Speaker 2: It's going to give you 15% off your entire purchase.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I know you guys have been using it. People have
- 8:01Speaker 2: been coming up to me in the games and talking
- 8:03Speaker 2: about it. The store has been telling me you guys
- 8:05Speaker 2: have been coming in and using it. Keep doing it.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Take advantage of the 15% off. Make sure you're checking
- 8:11Speaker 2: them out. Again, alumnihall.com, or you can go ahead and
- 8:14Speaker 2: head into the store on Archer Road, but make sure
- 8:17Speaker 2: you tell them that Allie sent you. We appreciate Alumni
- 8:19Speaker 2: Hall for all their support.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Okay. Defense is where.
- 8:25Speaker 2: My biggest concern is, and this is not, you know,
- 8:29Speaker 2: me panicking or, you know, freaking out over here, but
- 8:32Speaker 2: I think we could improve. Campbell gets the opening kickoff,
- 8:37Speaker 2: and they almost immediately hit Florida with a big play.
- 8:40Speaker 2: They go 63 yards on seven plays and get all
- 8:42Speaker 2: the way down near the goal line before Florida holds
- 8:44Speaker 2: them to a field goal. Now, I did think that
- 8:46Speaker 2: that was good that they were able to hold them
- 8:47Speaker 2: to that, but... I didn't love it. And I do
- 8:50Speaker 2: think the defense got better after that. Campbell had 97
- 8:54Speaker 2: yards in the first quarter. They had 113 the rest
- 8:57Speaker 2: of the night. And I do think that's a huge difference.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Camden's sixth killer had thrown for more than 330 yards
- 9:03Speaker 2: in each of Campbell's first two games going into this.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Florida held them to 127. So I'm not sitting here
- 9:09Speaker 2: saying that the defense played horribly or poorly or anything
- 9:12Speaker 2: like that.
- 9:13Speaker 1: They didn't.
- 9:14Speaker 2: The defensive line did look more physical than it did
- 9:16Speaker 2: against FAU. The secondary settled down a little bit. They
- 9:19Speaker 2: did force two turnovers. There were a lot of positive things.
- 9:22Speaker 2: The issue, I think, for me was the slow start,
- 9:25Speaker 2: and we've seen that now two weeks in a row.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Summerall said after the game that Florida really needs to
- 9:30Speaker 2: start faster defensively. They haven't gotten a three and out
- 9:34Speaker 2: on the opponent's first drive yet. Cameron James basically said
- 9:37Speaker 2: the same thing, that slow defensive starts have been an
- 9:40Speaker 2: issue around here, and it's something that we have to
- 9:42Speaker 2: clean up. And this is where I think who you're
- 9:45Speaker 2: playing matters. You can give up 63 yards to Campbell
- 9:48Speaker 2: on the first drive and then settle down and adjust
- 9:51Speaker 2: and then completely shut them down. But can you do
- 9:53Speaker 2: that at Auburn? Maybe the first drive ends in seven
- 9:56Speaker 2: instead of three. Maybe that missed assignment turns into a
- 10:00Speaker 2: 60-yard touchdown. And maybe you get behind seven-nothing with Jordan
- 10:04Speaker 2: Hare going crazy. And suddenly Aaron Filo is starting his
- 10:08Speaker 2: first SEC road game playing from behind. And I think
- 10:12Speaker 2: that's a totally different situation. And somehow pointed something else
- 10:15Speaker 2: out that I thought was important as well. There were
- 10:18Speaker 2: plays when Brad White had the right defensive call and
- 10:21Speaker 2: Florida didn't execute it. They didn't contain the edge correctly.
- 10:25Speaker 2: That's not a scheme problem. That's an execution problem. And
- 10:29Speaker 2: when you get into SEC play, you don't get nearly
- 10:32Speaker 2: as many chances to make those mistakes and then be
- 10:35Speaker 2: able to recover from them. And that's why I think
- 10:37Speaker 2: the defense is going to be the biggest thing that
- 10:38Speaker 2: I'm watching next week. Can they start fast? Can they
- 10:42Speaker 2: eliminate the early explosive plays? Can they get off the
- 10:45Speaker 2: field on third down? And can they make the play
- 10:48Speaker 2: when Brad White puts them in position to make the play? And,
- 10:53Speaker 2: you know, I don't feel like Summerall was happy with
- 10:56Speaker 2: that win. And, guys, that is probably my favorite part
- 10:59Speaker 2: of the whole night. Florida wins 52-3. And John Summerall
- 11:04Speaker 2: walks into his press conference sounding like Florida barely survived.
- 11:08Speaker 2: He wasn't happy with the second half.
- 11:10Speaker 1: I kind of love that.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Florida led 45-3 at halftime. Then you go into the
- 11:15Speaker 2: second half and things got sloppy. Eight penalties for 95
- 11:18Speaker 2: yards for the game. Two turnovers, a muffed punt, a
- 11:21Speaker 2: failed fake punt, personal fouls, holding calls. Termell Jones threw
- 11:26Speaker 2: an interception. Florida scored seven points after halftime. And Summerall's
- 11:31Speaker 2: point was pretty simple. You do that in conference play
- 11:34Speaker 2: and you're going to get beat. I actually think he
- 11:36Speaker 2: said it a little bit more aggressively than that.
- 11:38Speaker 1: I think he said.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Florida is going to get embarrassed if they play like that.
- 11:43Speaker 2: And I think that tells you what his standard is.
- 11:45Speaker 2: He's not grading this team on whether or not they
- 11:47Speaker 2: can beat Campbell because.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Florida should beat Campbell.
- 11:50Speaker 2: He's looking at everything through the lens of what it's
- 11:52Speaker 2: going to look like against SEC teams.
- 11:55Speaker 1: And he's right.
- 11:56Speaker 2: You get first and 25 against Campbell, you can probably
- 11:58Speaker 2: overcome that. You get first and 25 on the road
- 12:01Speaker 2: at Auburn. Summerall said you might as well start getting
- 12:04Speaker 2: the punt team ready. That is the difference. the margin
- 12:07Speaker 2: of error gets so much smaller once you get to
- 12:11Speaker 2: conference play. And I also thought it was interesting that
- 12:13Speaker 2: he called out some of the backups without actually naming anybody.
- 12:17Speaker 2: He basically said some guys got an opportunity in the
- 12:20Speaker 2: second half and they showed the coaches exactly why they
- 12:24Speaker 2: aren't playing more.
- 12:25Speaker 1: It was actually, it was kind of an amusing statement.
- 12:27Speaker 1: And I do think those are the tales of the
- 12:29Speaker 1: two halves.
- 12:29Speaker 2: We were playing a lot of backup guys in the
- 12:32Speaker 2: second half, but it tells you, There's kind of a
- 12:35Speaker 2: drop-off between those first straight guys and the second and
- 12:37Speaker 2: third straight guys. And I think it tells you that
- 12:40Speaker 2: Coach Summerall wasn't just frustrated about the penalties. He was
- 12:44Speaker 2: frustrated with the standard dropping once the game was out
- 12:46Speaker 2: of hand. And his point was that if you're wearing
- 12:49Speaker 2: a Florida uniform and you get in the game, the
- 12:51Speaker 2: standard doesn't change just because you're a second team or
- 12:54Speaker 2: third straight guy.
- 12:56Speaker 1: And I like that. So.
- 12:59Speaker 2: What do we know after two games? I think that
- 13:01Speaker 2: there is a lot to feel really good about. Special
- 13:04Speaker 2: teams look dramatically better. Shout out Jonathan Galante. And not
- 13:09Speaker 2: just because BB3 happened to break two returns, but.
- 13:12Speaker 1: You can see the emphasis. You can see the coaching.
- 13:16Speaker 2: And Florida looks like it has a chance to actually
- 13:18Speaker 2: win games in that phase. And you know I love
- 13:22Speaker 2: to see it. The offense has been about as efficient
- 13:26Speaker 2: as you could ask for. Aaron Filo looks comfortable. Chase
- 13:28Speaker 2: Ball looks like a star. Dallas Wilson is actually healthy.
- 13:33Speaker 2: BB3 is becoming a major weapon. And they haven't even
- 13:36Speaker 2: had Eric Singleton available this entire time. Then there's the defense,
- 13:41Speaker 2: and they had good stretches. Maybe call them really good stretches.
- 13:45Speaker 2: They only gave up three points on Saturday, so I'm
- 13:48Speaker 2: not sitting here sounding the alarm. But the coaches are
- 13:52Speaker 2: telling us that they need to get better, and I
- 13:54Speaker 2: do think they're right. You cannot take a quarter to
- 13:57Speaker 2: settle in next week. You can't give up explosives early
- 14:01Speaker 2: and assume you're going to have time to fix it later.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Florida is now going to Auburn on the planes at night.
- 14:09Speaker 2: SEC opener, and that is where we're really going to
- 14:11Speaker 2: start to learn about this team. Florida did exactly what
- 14:15Speaker 2: it needed to do in the first two weeks. They're 2-0.
- 14:17Speaker 2: They scored 118 points. They showed us the playmakers. They
- 14:21Speaker 2: showed us an efficient offense. And for the first time
- 14:23Speaker 2: in a long time, special teams could be a strength.
- 14:27Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Now we need to see the defense take that step
- 14:30Speaker 2: because the warm-up games are over. SEC play starts now.
- 14:35Speaker 2: I want to know guys who stood out to you
- 14:37Speaker 2: in this game. Tell me on defense who stood out
- 14:39Speaker 2: to you. I think that's the part I'm struggling with.
- 14:41Speaker 2: There's nobody that when I'm watching this game live, I'm like, oh,
- 14:45Speaker 2: they're so-and-so. This guy's a total stud. There's nobody that's
- 14:49Speaker 2: really separating themselves for me. And I think maybe that's
- 14:52Speaker 2: part of my struggle with this defense. But let me
- 14:54Speaker 2: know who is standing out to you down in the comments.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I appreciate you guys for tuning in. We also appreciate
- 14:59Speaker 2: PrizePix for all their support. Don't forget, if you haven't

- 15:08Speaker 2: $ 150 in lineups instantly. We appreciate PrizePix for all their support.
