- 0:07Speaker 1: This podcast.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 0:13Speaker 2: conservation always went. I'm your host, Spencer Newhart and today
- 0:16Speaker 2: we're joined by Jannis Brody, Corey, Marge Roman and Seth.
- 0:21Speaker 2: This is a ten round quiz show with questions from
- 0:23Speaker 2: meat Eater's four verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking,
- 0:27Speaker 2: and there is a prize. Meat Eater will donate five
- 0:29Speaker 2: hundred dollars to the conservation organization of the winners choosing
- 0:33Speaker 2: for the stat of the week. This week, we're looking
- 0:35Speaker 2: at the number five that how many days until the
- 0:38Speaker 2: third season of Meat Eater Kids is released. The first
- 0:41Speaker 2: episode will be available on June thirtieth on the Meat
- 0:44Speaker 2: Eater Kids podcast feed. We'll have five new episodes this summer,
- 0:48Speaker 2: with new ones dropping each Monday through the end of July.
- 0:52Speaker 2: We've got new stories, new critter noises, new jokes, and
- 0:55Speaker 2: new trivia. Again. That's the Meat Eater Kids podcast feed
- 0:58Speaker 2: on June thirtieth.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I just had a fellow today tell me on the
- 1:02Speaker 3: phone how much they enjoy him and the kids listening
- 1:04Speaker 3: to that. They put it on on their way to
- 1:06Speaker 3: basketball practice and they really enjoy it.
- 1:09Speaker 2: We've got a new crop of kids this year playing trivia.
- 1:12Speaker 2: We've got Corey Culkins junior. It's gonna be there. He was.
- 1:15Speaker 2: He was the highlight of that day recording those episodes.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I'm glad you.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Thinks so too.
- 1:20Speaker 5: Did Marshall feel like a star after he left? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:24Speaker 5: he thinks he's a celebrity now.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Oh good, yeah, okay. He will be in five days
- 1:30Speaker 2: on June thirtieth.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Cool.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Here's our Infrequently Asked Questions segment. If you have a
- 1:34Speaker 2: trivia related question for our crew, send it to Trivia
- 1:37Speaker 2: at the Medeater dot com with the subject line I FAQ.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Joel Donneley says, what's the most common question people send?
- 1:44Speaker 2: I talked about this in the past, similar with a
- 1:47Speaker 2: with a different question. There's a lot of people who
- 1:49Speaker 2: are right in asking what state has the most miles
- 1:52Speaker 2: of shoreline or the most running water, And they'll also
- 1:54Speaker 2: provide like five different answers Kentucky, Nebraska, Alaska, California. So
- 2:01Speaker 2: that's that's a common one people will send. But there's
- 2:03Speaker 2: a different question that is very cut and dry. It's
- 2:06Speaker 2: been sent to me thirty one times. I just checked
- 2:08Speaker 2: this morning. What's the longest running outdoor TV show. No
- 2:12Speaker 2: one's gonna get this. Do you guys have any guesses?
- 2:15Speaker 6: Longest running out that's abroad, hot and fishing.
- 2:22Speaker 2: You've never even heard of this? The answer is Kentucky Afield.
- 2:25Speaker 7: That's what I was gonna say.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Uh huh, yeah, Kentucky Field. Thirty one people have sent
- 2:30Speaker 2: that Kentucky Field does a very good job of branding
- 2:33Speaker 2: that they are the longest running outdoor TV show. It's
- 2:35Speaker 2: part of the communications arm of the Kentucky Department of
- 2:39Speaker 2: Fish and Wildlife. It's been airing since nineteen fifty three.
- 2:43Speaker 2: They claim it's the third longest running TV show of
- 2:46Speaker 2: any subject matter and is just slightly younger than Meet
- 2:49Speaker 2: the Press and the Today Show.
- 2:52Speaker 8: So kentuckyd or is it like a public access thing?
- 2:55Speaker 2: I don't know where they aired. I'm guessing on local
- 2:57Speaker 2: stations in Kentucky, But like I said, it's put on
- 3:00Speaker 2: by their state's wildlife agency and it's just a standard
- 3:04Speaker 2: hunting fishing show with a touch of conservation. And they
- 3:08Speaker 2: love to tell those folks in Kentucky who see it
- 3:10Speaker 2: that it's the longest running outdoor TV show. So much
- 3:13Speaker 2: so that thirty one people in the last four years
- 3:16Speaker 2: have sent me that question.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Well man, and just after ten seasons of meteor we
- 3:20Speaker 3: were like, man, what are we gonna do next? We
- 3:22Speaker 3: got to send Steve all the way to Africa. And
- 3:24Speaker 3: these guys have been doing thirty one seasons in one state.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I know thirty one times I've been sent this question.
- 3:30Speaker 2: They've been doing this since nineteen fifty three, so seventy
- 3:33Speaker 2: years running seventy seas. Like I said, only Meet the
- 3:35Speaker 2: Press and The Today Show are older than them. So
- 3:38Speaker 2: good for you, Kentucky Field, thanks to those folks who
- 3:41Speaker 2: have sent that question. As you can tell, it would
- 3:44Speaker 2: be one that no one would get right, but good
- 3:47Speaker 2: for the folks in Kentucky Field.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Do you know what the most common infrequently asked question
- 3:53Speaker 3: is too?
- 3:54Speaker 4: That's what I thought.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah. One of them was about when Meat Eater podcast
- 3:59Speaker 2: guests will start participating again. That was a common one
- 4:02Speaker 2: that folks would send in or we have some housekeeping.
- 4:06Speaker 2: During the Jabroni Championship, we had a question about the
- 4:09Speaker 2: name of the yellow wildflower that combines an injury with
- 4:13Speaker 2: a woman's name. Corey, would you put for that one?
- 4:16Speaker 2: The brown eyed Susan brown eyed season, which is not
- 4:18Speaker 2: right and gave me a real chuckle. The brown eye.
- 4:24Speaker 2: The correct answer was the black eyed Susan. Now, Michael
- 4:28Speaker 2: Mote wrote in to say that besides the black eyed Susan,
- 4:31Speaker 2: there should be another acceptable answer. It's not the brown
- 4:34Speaker 2: eyed Susan. It's the cut leaf daisy. Those are a
- 4:37Speaker 2: yellow wildflower and it does combine an injury with a
- 4:41Speaker 2: woman's name, So if you said cut leaf daisy for
- 4:44Speaker 2: that one, then you'd also get cut leaf. A cut
- 4:49Speaker 2: would be an injury, and it's a daisy, so a
- 4:52Speaker 2: cut leaf daisy would I would give that if someone
- 4:54Speaker 2: nobody in the room said that, and only one listener
- 4:57Speaker 2: wrote in with that commentary, So if you were Michael
- 5:00Speaker 2: or another person who said cut leaf daisy, we'll give
- 5:03Speaker 2: it to you. We're still not going to accept brown
- 5:05Speaker 2: eyed Susan though, which Corey said is a precursor to
- 5:08Speaker 2: getting pink eye. Very much enjoyed that right. The Shelby
- 5:13Speaker 2: ind extra today is a three, so our winner should
- 5:16Speaker 2: get six correct answers, and with that we're onto the
- 5:18Speaker 2: game of trivia. Play the drop phill. Look, I need
- 5:24Speaker 2: to know what I stay under win everything?
- 5:28Speaker 1: How's it just tend to win?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Everything, Demon Suckers. Question one. The topic is woodsmanship. This
- 5:41Speaker 2: first great question is via Charlie McDonald and as always,
- 5:45Speaker 2: it will be multiple choice. If a lightning strike and
- 5:49Speaker 2: thunder are separated by ten seconds, then how far away
- 5:53Speaker 2: is the lightning? Is it one mile, two miles, ten
- 5:58Speaker 2: miles or miles For our international listeners, that's one point
- 6:04Speaker 2: six kilometers, three point two kilometers, sixteen kilometers, or thirty
- 6:10Speaker 2: two point two kilometers. So if a lightning strike and
- 6:13Speaker 2: thunder are separated by ten seconds, then how far away
- 6:18Speaker 2: is the lightning? Your four choices? One mile, two miles,
- 6:23Speaker 2: ten miles, twenty miles. Does anybody know this?
- 6:28Speaker 7: I know what we used to say when we were
- 6:29Speaker 7: a kid.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Yes, same right, same, see if that's accurate or not? Again? One,
- 6:34Speaker 2: I've heard it somewhere two miles, ten miles or twenty miles.
- 6:38Speaker 2: And that's if the lightning strike and thunder are separated
- 6:40Speaker 2: by ten seconds, and that is one point six kilometers,
- 6:44Speaker 2: three point two kilometers, sixteen kilometers or thirty two point
- 6:48Speaker 2: two kilometers.
- 6:50Speaker 7: We're in America, miles.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Is everybody ready? That's another common IFAQ? Can we get more?
- 6:57Speaker 2: Canadian New Zealand Australian questions. Those three groups specifically, go
- 7:03Speaker 2: ahead and reveal your answers. We have SATs saying ten Roman, ten,
- 7:07Speaker 2: Giannis ten, March ten, Corey ten, Brody ten. The correct
- 7:14Speaker 2: answer is two miles. Nobody got it right. The general
- 7:21Speaker 2: rule is that you count the number of seconds separating
- 7:24Speaker 2: lightning and thunder than divide by five for miles, were
- 7:28Speaker 2: divided by three for kilometers. Noah says that anytime you're
- 7:32Speaker 2: close enough to hear thunder, you're close enough to get
- 7:34Speaker 2: struck by lightning.
- 7:35Speaker 1: We just left off that divide by five party.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yep, so ten seconds would be two miles for
- 7:41Speaker 2: every five seconds.
- 7:43Speaker 3: We were always all thinking we were a lot closer
- 7:47Speaker 3: or a lot farther.
- 7:50Speaker 2: So Brody was your board?
- 7:51Speaker 1: Say hello, Mike Lee.
- 7:54Speaker 2: The back of Brody's whiteboard says, suck it, Mike Lee,
- 7:58Speaker 2: you're here. Question two. The topic is conservation. This seven
- 8:02Speaker 2: letter word is defined as quote the breaking of ice
- 8:06Speaker 2: chunks from the edge of a glacier. Oh man, I
- 8:11Speaker 2: hope I can get seven. This is question two. All
- 8:17Speaker 2: six of our players got question one wrong. This seven
- 8:20Speaker 2: letter word is defined as the breaking of ice chunks
- 8:24Speaker 2: from the edge of a glacier. Jannis and Rody and
- 8:29Speaker 2: Corey seem like they know what seth? Do you have
- 8:31Speaker 2: this one?
- 8:31Speaker 1: Right? Wow?
- 8:33Speaker 9: The word I the word I chose didn't quite add up.
- 8:36Speaker 2: You've probably seen more glacier anyone else here.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I've seen this happen for.
- 8:44Speaker 2: This seven letter word is defined as the breaking of
- 8:47Speaker 2: ice chunks from the edge of a glacier.
- 8:50Speaker 10: Makes me think of The Titanic.
- 8:54Speaker 5: My kid really wants to watch that, and I think, oh,
- 8:56Speaker 5: you don't let him.
- 8:57Speaker 7: Well, it's a three hour movie.
- 9:00Speaker 2: And a half. He's watching nights.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:03Speaker 10: You know a fun fact one of the crew members
- 9:05Speaker 10: there's a last minute like crew exchange, and guy got
- 9:08Speaker 10: off the ship with the only key for all of
- 9:10Speaker 10: the binoculars on the entire boat, so they didn't have
- 9:13Speaker 10: buyinos the entire time they were out there. They were
- 9:15Speaker 10: just locked away in a locker because of a last
- 9:17Speaker 10: minute cruise on the real Titanic, the Real Titanic. Another
- 9:21Speaker 10: fun fact, when they took took off from port, there
- 9:25Speaker 10: was a fire burning on board that had been burning
- 9:27Speaker 10: in one of the coal never cold storage areas for
- 9:31Speaker 10: over a week and a half. They didn't put it
- 9:32Speaker 10: out for two days into the voyage. So fun fact, so.
- 9:37Speaker 6: Mark's gonna do a Titanic trivia.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Again.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Seven word is defined as the breaking of ice chunks
- 9:47Speaker 2: from the edge of a glacier. It's everybody ready, go
- 9:51Speaker 2: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Sath and Roman
- 9:53Speaker 2: without an answer. Giannis says calving. Marge without an answer.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Corey and Brody say calving. They got The correct answer
- 10:01Speaker 2: is calving. Calving can happen to glaciers, icebergs, and ice shelves.
- 10:06Speaker 2: If it happens on water, the falling ice can cause
- 10:09Speaker 2: hazardous waves. These events are so powerful that the World
- 10:12Speaker 2: Wildlife Fund says a calving glacier generates the loudest natural
- 10:16Speaker 2: sound in the Arctic Ocean. Where were you at when
- 10:19Speaker 2: you saw Calvin glacier?
- 10:21Speaker 9: Set was in interior Alaska. We can't well, we're I
- 10:26Speaker 9: was dull sheep on with Steve and his brother and
- 10:29Speaker 9: we can't like.
- 10:30Speaker 4: The whole valley below.
- 10:31Speaker 9: Us was a glacier. So you lay there at night
- 10:34Speaker 9: in your tent and just hear that thing, Oh, big
- 10:37Speaker 9: chunks falling off of it all night long.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Uh huh, yeah, very cool. It was loud.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Question three the topic is fishing. This next great question
- 10:44Speaker 2: is via Nicholas Bush. This is an audio question. Bill
- 10:48Speaker 2: is going to play you one minute of a song
- 10:50Speaker 2: about fishing, and you need to tell me who the
- 10:52Speaker 2: artist is. Take it away, Phil on.
- 10:54Speaker 6: Nitty Gritty, I'm already mad.
- 11:00Speaker 11: I love her set, I love the fish.
- 11:07Speaker 2: I spend all day out all this leg nail. It's
- 11:11Speaker 2: all like catch.
- 11:13Speaker 4: But today she's an easy one.
- 11:15Speaker 2: At the door, said.
- 11:17Speaker 5: I, what do we need to tell?
- 11:21Speaker 1: You?
- 11:21Speaker 2: Tell me who sing who is singing this song? She'd
- 11:24Speaker 2: be packing all her things and she be gone by.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Oh my god, it's terrible. I just go I'm just
- 11:36Speaker 3: like a go to country guy. And then I just
- 11:39Speaker 3: whose name I write down when these things come up?
- 11:46Speaker 4: If you don't have it by now, you're not getting.
- 11:50Speaker 10: No.
- 11:51Speaker 2: He doesn't say his own name in this song, set.
- 11:53Speaker 3: No, it ain't Luke Colmbs song set No, thank you.
- 12:01Speaker 10: All these music ones are always a genre of music that,
- 12:04Speaker 10: to be honest, I don't listen to. So it's really
- 12:06Speaker 10: hard for.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Me, like throw me something sounds a little like Axel
- 12:11Speaker 2: Rose woe write that down. Seth needed two words and
- 12:16Speaker 2: he had the answer. Corey, how do you feel about
- 12:18Speaker 2: your antser really bad, okay, really bad.
- 12:20Speaker 3: What if there's any rap songs where they mentioned and fish?
- 12:24Speaker 2: We had Hucci Mama as an answer a few weeks ago,
- 12:28Speaker 2: which is a rap song. There you go. You know,
- 12:34Speaker 2: I don't know that song, Seth, you really liked that song?
- 12:40Speaker 4: I mean, it's not my favorite, but I don't I
- 12:43Speaker 4: don't mind it.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Okay, Kelsey didn't like Kelsey didn't make you pick between No.
- 12:52Speaker 9: I listened to a lot of country there you go,
- 12:53Speaker 9: a lot of people give me ship about that, but
- 12:55Speaker 9: I don't give a ship.
- 12:56Speaker 2: A lot of people like Steve.
- 12:58Speaker 4: Yeah, Steve, for sure, he's only.
- 13:02Speaker 7: Against a certain type of country.
- 13:05Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 13:05Speaker 2: I like That's where I fall too.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I listened to a lot of country too.
- 13:09Speaker 2: This country was not your favorite country, Okay, I'm with that.
- 13:12Speaker 4: I like all the country, the old, the semi old,
- 13:16Speaker 4: the new.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Okay, again, you need to tell me who was singing
- 13:20Speaker 2: that song. It's everybody ready, Phil, what do you think
- 13:24Speaker 2: of that song? Not my favorite? Go ahead and reveal
- 13:29Speaker 2: your answers. We have set saying Brad Paisley without an answer.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Jannis says, Randy, Travis, Marge says, Keith Urban Corey says
- 13:39Speaker 2: Alan Jackson Brody says Morgan, the correct answer is Brad Pace.
- 13:45Speaker 4: At least you guys wrote down country.
- 13:46Speaker 10: Ours that was a country artist, right.
- 13:51Speaker 9: To Brad Paisley, I mean I grew up listening to
- 13:55Speaker 9: country radio, so I don't know whenever, So you knew
- 13:58Speaker 9: about him.
- 13:58Speaker 4: As a kid. Yeah, Yeah.
- 14:01Speaker 2: That tune is called I'm Gonna miss Her or the
- 14:03Speaker 2: Fishing Song. Brad Paisley wrote it in college and performed
- 14:07Speaker 2: it at a student concert, then tried selling it to
- 14:10Speaker 2: Garth Brooks, George Strait and get this Alan Jackson, Corey.
- 14:14Speaker 2: He eventually decided to keep the song for himself and
- 14:17Speaker 2: released it on his second album in two thousand and two.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I'm Gonna Miss Her got CMA nominations for Song of
- 14:22Speaker 2: the Year, Single of the Year, and video. It was
- 14:26Speaker 2: a highly celebrated.
- 14:28Speaker 9: When post Blone started dabbling with country, he covered that
- 14:32Speaker 9: song and it was fantastic.
- 14:34Speaker 11: Brad Paisley's a paleontology net he I worked them of
- 14:38Speaker 11: the rockies.
- 14:39Speaker 8: He came in. He was just there a month.
- 14:41Speaker 2: I saw you. He had a photo there a little
- 14:42Speaker 2: while ago. You get him on the pod nice and
- 14:46Speaker 2: he married the woman in that music video who was
- 14:48Speaker 2: Phil I bet you loved According to Jim Right, No, no,
- 14:53Speaker 2: she she was the sister in law on that show,
- 14:57Speaker 2: and that's that's his wife. Question for the topic is hunting, common,
- 15:02Speaker 2: hooded and red breasted are the three types of this
- 15:06Speaker 2: North American diver duck?
- 15:09Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 15:10Speaker 1: These things are tasty.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Corey Brody, Yanni all seemed to know this one. Common,
- 15:15Speaker 2: hooded and red breasted are the three types of this
- 15:19Speaker 2: North American diver duck? Common comma, hooded comma. Look at
- 15:24Speaker 2: you right behind, you can see it. Common is one,
- 15:26Speaker 2: hooded is two, and red breasted is three. There are
- 15:29Speaker 2: the three types of North American diver duck of this.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Where is Randall?
- 15:35Speaker 2: He's in Germany right now? Oh yes, We're gonna have
- 15:38Speaker 2: two Randallists episodes here the next couple weeks.
- 15:42Speaker 3: What if Steve was haunting in Germany? Would you be
- 15:44Speaker 3: any more excited about that?
- 15:46Speaker 5: No?
- 15:46Speaker 1: Uh?
- 15:48Speaker 4: Yeah, a little more? Yeah, I don't know. America's pretty cool.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Seth is about to spend America's birthday in Africa. He
- 15:57Speaker 2: leaves in a couple of days again.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Question four, which country in Africa is that?
- 16:05Speaker 4: Which country? Yeah?
- 16:07Speaker 9: Uh, well, Africa is the country, right yes, I don't know.
- 16:13Speaker 8: Said you're going to Tanzania.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Tanzania no interest.
- 16:20Speaker 2: And we can tell common hooded and red breasted are
- 16:24Speaker 2: the three types of this North?
- 16:25Speaker 7: You know, since your expectations are so low.
- 16:28Speaker 9: Yeah, I think everyone I talked to says that going
- 16:33Speaker 9: there changes their life.
- 16:34Speaker 2: So that's what are you going to celebrate the Fourth
- 16:36Speaker 2: of July while you're there?
- 16:38Speaker 3: Oh?
- 16:38Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah?
- 16:41Speaker 2: Some fireworks, big old American flag with Does everyone have
- 16:46Speaker 2: an answer for question four? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 16:50Speaker 2: We have seth saying merganzer. Roman says swallow Yannis merganser. Marge,
- 16:57Speaker 2: Cory and Brody say merganser. They got it. The correct
- 17:00Speaker 2: answer is a merganzer. Briganzers are categorized as saw bill
- 17:06Speaker 2: diving ducks, which are fittingly named after their slim, serrated bills.
- 17:10Speaker 2: These specialized beaks help them catch and hold prey such
- 17:13Speaker 2: as fish, crustaceans, and amphibians. Organzers are considered one of
- 17:17Speaker 2: the worst tasting ducks a hunter can harvest. Brody gave
- 17:21Speaker 2: a little hint and said they're delicious. How many organsers
- 17:24Speaker 2: have you eaten?
- 17:25Speaker 7: None?
- 17:27Speaker 6: Jannist I used to work for a fly fishing outfitter
- 17:30Speaker 6: that just hated these things, just wanted to kill them all.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Why do you think that us trout? Oh yeah, I bet.
- 17:38Speaker 3: I think the very first float trip for fishing, maybe
- 17:43Speaker 3: ever float trip, and the very first duck I ever
- 17:46Speaker 3: shot was a combo for uh uh and it.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Ended up being a hooded merganser Colorado. Oh yeah, we tried,
- 17:54Speaker 2: uh huh.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:55Speaker 2: I had my wife's uncle. He was duck hunting. Did
- 17:58Speaker 2: not intend to shoot her, did Merganza. But he shot
- 18:01Speaker 2: once then he got it mounted.
- 18:02Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 1: If I was going to get a duck mounted.
- 18:04Speaker 2: They're pretty Yeah, there's all three types on their bill.
- 18:09Speaker 10: That would have been a good one for part of
- 18:10Speaker 10: my plate.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Yeah, organser. What makes them taste so bad their diet?
- 18:15Speaker 2: Just because they eat a lot of Brody's little trout.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I'm reading a book right now where the author ate
- 18:21Speaker 2: a loon and he said the worst thing he'd ever
- 18:23Speaker 2: eaten was merganser, But a loon was ten times worse.
- 18:26Speaker 7: Than that.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Makes sense, darker and even fishier. See a lot of
- 18:31Speaker 2: LUNs here this time of year in Montana.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Question five The topic is cooking. This culinary technique is
- 18:39Speaker 2: defined as quote quickly cooking food and boiling water, then
- 18:43Speaker 2: dunking it in ice water to stop the cooking process.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Oh dang it.
- 18:48Speaker 3: This was one of my questions for my upcoming episode.
- 18:53Speaker 2: This culinary technique is defined as quickly cooking food and
- 18:57Speaker 2: boiling water, then dunking it in ice water to stop
- 19:01Speaker 2: the cooking process. This may be a one hundred percenter.
- 19:05Speaker 2: The room looks optimistic. Quickly cooking food and boiling water,
- 19:15Speaker 2: then dunking it in ice water to stop the cooking process.
- 19:18Speaker 4: The word food is throwing me off. Everything else.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 19:28Speaker 2: have Seth and Roman and Jannis and Marge. The whole
- 19:32Speaker 2: room says blanching. The whole room got it right. The
- 19:35Speaker 2: correct answer is blanching. Blanching is most commonly done prior
- 19:40Speaker 2: to freezing vegetables. Blanching also helps remove the skin of
- 19:43Speaker 2: tomatoes and peaches, a step you might use before making
- 19:46Speaker 2: salsa or pie. To learn about this process, check out
- 19:49Speaker 2: our article on the mediat dot com called how to
- 19:51Speaker 2: prepare your garden's harvest for winter storage.
- 19:54Speaker 7: You got to do that with crabs and shrimp too.
- 19:57Speaker 2: You blanch them every time.
- 19:59Speaker 7: Well, I mean I thought we do shrip cocktail.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Yeah, you blanch some stuff from your garden this year.
- 20:05Speaker 2: I'm gonna be getting too.
- 20:06Speaker 6: That from my garden yet is a few strawberries and
- 20:11Speaker 6: some radishes. It's like early summer, man, right, are.
- 20:14Speaker 2: You going to have to blanch later this year?
- 20:16Speaker 7: Now we just eat the stuff like, well, we'll save.
- 20:20Speaker 6: Some tomatoes, preserve some tomatoes.
- 20:22Speaker 2: But that's it. Fell We're halfway through the game of trivia.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Give us a scoreboard update.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Wow, it's not good.
- 20:28Speaker 11: Pretty close game. Last place got roam with one and
- 20:35Speaker 11: the rest of the players are right in line with
- 20:36Speaker 11: the Shelby index. We've got Seth, Corey, Brody, and Jannis
- 20:39Speaker 11: all tied up with three points at halftime.
- 20:41Speaker 2: All right, Question six. The topic is conservation. This next
- 20:49Speaker 2: great question is via Josh Perry. The wolf Center defines
- 20:53Speaker 2: this nine letter word as quote when scientists place devices
- 20:58Speaker 2: on wild animals to track their movements and behaviors.
- 21:04Speaker 1: What.
- 21:05Speaker 2: The wolf Center defines this nine letter word as when
- 21:09Speaker 2: scientists place devices on wild animals to track their movements
- 21:14Speaker 2: and behaviors. The room appears to be stumped after having
- 21:22Speaker 2: a one hundred percenter on question five. Brody, do you
- 21:27Speaker 2: have this one right?
- 21:28Speaker 1: I got a nine letter word? Okay, that makes sense.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Corey, do you have this one right?
- 21:35Speaker 4: Fifty?
- 21:35Speaker 2: The wolf Center defines this nine letter word as when
- 21:39Speaker 2: scientists place the devices on wild animals to track their
- 21:43Speaker 2: movements and behaviors.
- 21:45Speaker 8: Maybe sixty forty?
- 21:46Speaker 2: Oh okay, he's growing more confident. Show your wifeboard to
- 21:50Speaker 2: Brody see what he thinks of it. Yeah, buddy, okay,
- 21:53Speaker 2: they are in agreement. Seth, do you have this one right?
- 21:56Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know where they're both right
- 21:58Speaker 1: or both wrong in between?
- 22:02Speaker 2: When scientists place devices on wild animals to track their
- 22:05Speaker 2: movements and behaviors. J honest looks stumped down there. He
- 22:10Speaker 2: did not have this question for his next time hosting
- 22:15Speaker 2: How you doing, Yanni?
- 22:19Speaker 7: Honestly, Jannis always does this and then comes up with that.
- 22:22Speaker 9: I honestly don't exactly know what the word is. That
- 22:25Speaker 9: I what it means the word I put down? Oh okay,
- 22:28Speaker 9: well I've heard before, you know.
- 22:31Speaker 2: The Wolf Center defines this nine letter word is when
- 22:34Speaker 2: scientists places devices on wild animals to track their movements
- 22:37Speaker 2: and behaviors.
- 22:39Speaker 3: I ran it down the same word three times, and
- 22:42Speaker 3: every time. It's ten letters.
- 22:43Speaker 4: Oh okay, just lose one of them.
- 22:46Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Maybe yeah, maybe you're selling that's what I do. Maybe
- 22:51Speaker 2: you're just spelling it wrong.
- 22:54Speaker 9: Yeah, drop the e.
- 22:55Speaker 3: That's a good good point.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Drop the e used to t some.
- 23:02Speaker 3: It's slaying everybody. Ready, I need some I need some
- 23:06Speaker 3: space in my brain.
- 23:09Speaker 2: What do you currently fill that space with? Right now?
- 23:14Speaker 2: It's all this chitter chat? I need some space to
- 23:17Speaker 2: come up with the answer. Marge, do you have this
- 23:20Speaker 2: one right?
- 23:21Speaker 3: No?
- 23:22Speaker 10: I just added iron.
- 23:23Speaker 3: G Yeah, I guess I do.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have set saying telemetry.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Roman says analyzing, be honest. Without an answer, Marge says coloring,
- 23:41Speaker 2: corny collaring, Brody collaring. The correct answer is telemetry, right,
- 23:49Speaker 2: you're joking waiting for the punchline. No, it's telemetry. This
- 23:52Speaker 2: this is what the wolf Center defines that nine letter
- 23:55Speaker 2: word as well.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I could define collaring that way.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Too, buddy, Well, the wolf Center is not. As we
- 24:01Speaker 2: learned on a previous episode of Trivia, technology used to
- 24:04Speaker 2: track Sputnik is what birth the science of wildlife telemetry.
- 24:08Speaker 2: This GPS research has been used across the animal kingdom
- 24:12Speaker 2: from Wales to butterflies. Question seven.
- 24:17Speaker 3: I'm like, there's no way it's telementary because who the
- 24:19Speaker 3: hell has done that in the last twenty years since
- 24:21Speaker 3: the GPS.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Still used today.
- 24:25Speaker 7: That true is GPS and there's GPS.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Huh GPS Question seven? The topic is natural history. This
- 24:36Speaker 2: man who was coloring, though, this man who was America's
- 24:42Speaker 2: secretary of state negotiated the deal to purchase Alaska from Russia.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Some this man who was America's secretary of state negotiated
- 24:56Speaker 2: the deal to purchase Alaska from Russia.
- 25:00Speaker 9: It wasn't Mike Lee because he'd want to sell right,
- 25:05Speaker 9: good one Brody has I'm not going to tell you.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Brody can tell you if he likes this man who
- 25:13Speaker 2: was America's secretary of state negotiated the deal to purchase Alaska.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Brody just did.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Do you guys know what the I think it's called valsalva.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Do you guys know what that salsalva maneuver? It's something
- 25:27Speaker 3: I learned about when I was having those the heart
- 25:29Speaker 3: palpitations things more often. And it's basically a way that
- 25:32Speaker 3: you like just like scrunch down your body and like
- 25:35Speaker 3: create pressure to like kind of reset your heart, so
- 25:39Speaker 3: that quit's doing it. I think Brody just did that
- 25:42Speaker 3: exercise the valsalva maneuver to push that answer into it.
- 25:47Speaker 2: To actually all try it. Did you? Is that something
- 25:50Speaker 2: you did?
- 25:50Speaker 4: Yanni? Yeah?
- 25:51Speaker 3: I tried it, but then I later learned that it didn't.
- 25:53Speaker 3: It doesn't really work for the kind of issue I
- 25:56Speaker 3: was dealing with.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Again, this is question seven the top. It's natural history.
- 26:01Speaker 2: There are five blank whiteboards, and then Brody, who thinks he.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Has to give everyone a hint.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Yeah, this man who was America's secretary of state negotiated
- 26:12Speaker 2: the deal to purchase America.
- 26:16Speaker 1: What's the score, phil Well?
- 26:17Speaker 2: I think Seth has a one point lead on you,
- 26:20Speaker 2: and last name, last name is good enough. These will
- 26:23Speaker 2: be Jeopardy rules for this one. This man who was
- 26:28Speaker 2: America's secretary of state negotiated to purchase from Russia. He
- 26:35Speaker 2: flashed his whiteboard to brilliant his head.
- 26:39Speaker 7: No, it's someone's folly.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Wow, Chester will that helped me?
- 26:49Speaker 6: The purchase of Alaska was someone's BOLLI there is a
- 26:54Speaker 6: hint from Brody.
- 26:55Speaker 2: The answer is not.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I'm going to get it wrong, but I think I'm right.
- 27:01Speaker 2: There was an episode of ice Fishing that was named
- 27:04Speaker 2: Chester's folly.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Not Chester. He didn't buy Alaska.
- 27:09Speaker 2: What was the folly on that trip? What was the issues?
- 27:11Speaker 2: Too cold?
- 27:14Speaker 4: Yeah, he should have pulled the plug and we should
- 27:17Speaker 4: have not gone.
- 27:18Speaker 2: How many fish were caught?
- 27:20Speaker 4: Oh, I don't know. We I mean, we caught quite
- 27:23Speaker 4: a few perch, but just just everything broke. Yeah, it
- 27:27Speaker 4: was Yeah, it was rough fifty. It's tough to ice fishing.
- 27:31Speaker 7: That stuff that'll turn you off ice fishing forever.
- 27:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:34Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Brody is handed out a hint that it was someone's folly,
- 27:39Speaker 2: and it did not help anybody in the room. But
- 27:41Speaker 2: I bet there's listeners who have come up with the
- 27:43Speaker 2: answer for sure. Everybody ready, go ahead and reveal your
- 27:48Speaker 2: answers and have seth without an answer. Roman says Smith,
- 27:51Speaker 2: you're honest, Hancock, Marge without an answer. Corey says Hoover.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Brody says Seaward. He got the answer, Seward. That's William Seward,
- 28:03Speaker 2: which is Seward's folly. At two cents per acre, which
- 28:08Speaker 2: came out to seven point two million dollars. America acquired
- 28:12Speaker 2: Alaska in eighteen sixty seven. Opponents of the purchase gave
- 28:16Speaker 2: it the nickname Sewards. Folly and Seward's ice box. About
- 28:20Speaker 2: thirty years later, even his harshest critics changed their tune
- 28:23Speaker 2: when the Klondike Gold Rush began in eighteen ninety six.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Today there's a town, Peninsula Highway, and multiple schools in
- 28:30Speaker 2: Alaska that carry his name. Question eight, The topic is fishing.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Angler sometimes mimic the larval stage of a Dobson fly,
- 28:40Speaker 2: which goes by this ungodly name. Brody quick to answer again.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Angler sometimes milled the larval stage of a Dobson fly,
- 28:52Speaker 2: which goes by this ungodly name. Again, Brody has an
- 28:58Speaker 2: answer five other whiteboards in the room. I do not
- 29:02Speaker 2: have an answer this question one. Okay, you want to
- 29:10Speaker 2: hand out any hints to this time? Did his generosity
- 29:15Speaker 2: for this episode? Angler sometimes mimic the larval stage of
- 29:18Speaker 2: a Dobson fly, which goes by this ungodly name.
- 29:23Speaker 8: H when you say ungodly, it's gross to say it, but.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Not going to give you any hints.
- 29:29Speaker 6: No more hints, buddy, Do you have this one right?
- 29:34Speaker 7: The ungodly name gave me an answer.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Okay, I hope it's right. We'll see yep. Now, the
- 29:42Speaker 2: last time those two agreed, you did not have the right, Yanni,
- 29:47Speaker 2: do you have an answer?
- 29:48Speaker 3: No, not yet.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Anglers sometimes mimic the larval stage of this dobs.
- 29:53Speaker 1: But I think you just gave Oh yeah, man, we'll
- 30:00Speaker 1: talk more.
- 30:01Speaker 5: I mean, I see him all the time.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Really, you don't got him out here?
- 30:05Speaker 4: You don't see him all the time.
- 30:06Speaker 10: I do.
- 30:07Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 30:08Speaker 4: Not here.
- 30:10Speaker 2: West of Yann. He's really studying this conversation. Buddy thinks
- 30:17Speaker 2: he has Okay, do you have an answer?
- 30:20Speaker 4: Set?
- 30:20Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 30:21Speaker 2: Okay? And has it? Is it an ungodly name?
- 30:24Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 30:24Speaker 2: Okay.
- 30:26Speaker 4: Maybe Brody and I are wrong, maybe.
- 30:28Speaker 2: But Yanni is really squinty.
- 30:30Speaker 4: I think I think Brody and I are on the
- 30:32Speaker 4: same page.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Be honest, anything coming to you? No, m hm must
- 30:38Speaker 2: not have been much of a fishing guide.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Huh well he wanted.
- 30:44Speaker 2: No, he wouldn't.
- 30:46Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, right.
- 30:48Speaker 2: It sounds like it's a Pennsylvania but.
- 30:50Speaker 1: The Mighty River they got him there.
- 30:53Speaker 4: You want to.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Marge, do you have an answer? Let's go right, everybody ready,
- 31:00Speaker 2: go ahead and reveal answersite Roman without an answer, Giannis
- 31:08Speaker 2: says hex. Marge says sex dungeons very good, wrong but ungodly.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Corey says hell gramite. Brody says, hell gramite. They got it.
- 31:18Speaker 2: The correct answer is hellgramite and the spelling is h
- 31:22Speaker 2: E L L g R A M M I T
- 31:26Speaker 2: E helgramite. Helgramites are a universal fish food, getting eaten
- 31:31Speaker 2: by trout, bass, catfish, panfish, and more. The most popular
- 31:35Speaker 2: way to imitate one is with a wooly bugger fly.
- 31:38Speaker 2: But if you want to use the real thing, then
- 31:40Speaker 2: check out our article on the medeater dot com called
- 31:43Speaker 2: Creepy Crawlers how to catch and fish with Helgramites.
- 31:46Speaker 1: They'll draw blood.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Man, they got some big old pinchers of them. So
- 31:50Speaker 2: what's what do you do? Familiarity with hellgermites? We used
- 31:52Speaker 2: to use them for bait for some Pennsylvania Corey, where
- 31:57Speaker 2: do you think you've seen helgramites that? Brody disagrees with.
- 31:59Speaker 4: You on I just looked it up.
- 32:00Speaker 2: I was way off, but as an angler, I knew
- 32:04Speaker 2: all about this. Uh huh, good on you, Bill. Let's
- 32:06Speaker 2: get a scoreboard update. We have two questions left.
- 32:10Speaker 4: Here.
- 32:11Speaker 11: We are Romans still has his point, he's holding on
- 32:13Speaker 11: to it. Maggie has two, Jannis has three, Corey has four,
- 32:18Speaker 11: and tied up in first place are Brody Henderson and
- 32:20Speaker 11: Seth Morris with fow anglers.
- 32:23Speaker 2: And all the fishing questions should be done for now.
- 32:26Speaker 2: They are Question nine. The topic is hunting. Who wrote
- 32:30Speaker 2: the nineteen seventy three turkey hunting book tenth Legion?
- 32:33Speaker 1: Oh?
- 32:34Speaker 2: Get out? Who wrote the nineteen seventy three turkey hunting
- 32:40Speaker 2: book tenth Legion? Brody quick to answer. Seth has now
- 32:45Speaker 2: joined him. Corey, Do you have a chance at this?
- 32:48Speaker 4: No?
- 32:48Speaker 2: No, Okay? Who's read this book in here? Okay? Yanni?
- 32:53Speaker 4: Seth?
- 32:53Speaker 2: No, I read Part I already, Yanni, you have this
- 32:56Speaker 2: one right then?
- 32:57Speaker 1: I do?
- 32:58Speaker 2: Who wrote the nineteen seventy three turkey hunting book?
- 33:01Speaker 3: So I'm not going to be able to take him down.
- 33:04Speaker 5: Today Monday's Meat Eater podcast, if you haven't listened to
- 33:08Speaker 5: it yet, did they talk about this?
- 33:10Speaker 2: H we had Will Primos talked about this specific book.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I was in the room.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Did they say his name? You were when you saw
- 33:20Speaker 2: the answer? Did you remember that name from the podcast?
- 33:23Speaker 11: I actually own a copy of this book. That's the reason,
- 33:26Speaker 11: and I've never read it.
- 33:27Speaker 4: Huh.
- 33:27Speaker 8: But yeah.
- 33:28Speaker 11: Also, yeah, he was at an NWTF one year too,
- 33:31Speaker 11: which is very funny. Just sitting like him, just sitting
- 33:33Speaker 11: behind a desk, like citing copies and stuff.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Who wrote the nineteen seventy three turkey hunting book Tenth Legion?
- 33:40Speaker 3: Because everybody, it's not just for some reason, it's because
- 33:43Speaker 3: you're an aspiring turkey hunter. And Ben O'Brien gifted you
- 33:46Speaker 3: that to help you, you know, to inspire.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Ben had him on the podcast. I feel like at one.
- 33:51Speaker 8: Time, yeah, I think that was before my time, but yeah.
- 33:54Speaker 4: He did.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have sat saying
- 33:58Speaker 2: Tom Kelly, Roman without an answer. Janna says Colonel Tom Kelly,
- 34:02Speaker 2: Marge without an answer. Corey says Knox. Brody says Tom Kelly.
- 34:07Speaker 4: They got it.
- 34:08Speaker 2: The correct answer is Tom Kelly. Tom Kelly's website has
- 34:12Speaker 2: declared it the Bible of Wild Turkey Hunting. The name
- 34:15Speaker 2: of the book is from Colonel Kelly's comparison of turkey
- 34:18Speaker 2: hunting to Caesar's Tenth Legion in his analogy. He says
- 34:22Speaker 2: both groups have a cult like obsession and common goal.
- 34:26Speaker 2: Phel Before question ten, give us a final scoreboard update.
- 34:31Speaker 8: It's down to Seth and Brody. They're still tied up
- 34:33Speaker 8: at six points.
- 34:34Speaker 6: Who's never happened question For the last question, the topic
- 34:40Speaker 6: is gear.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Damn. This is our listener question of the week, which
- 34:44Speaker 2: was won by Brad Hankins. We're sending this great question.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Brad is going to get a board game signed by
- 34:48Speaker 2: the crew. If you want a chance to win our
- 34:50Speaker 2: listener question of the week, then send your question to
- 34:52Speaker 2: Trivia at themeedeater dot com.
- 34:54Speaker 9: I'm rooting for you, Seth. Thanks you the last time
- 34:57Speaker 9: you had to win. I don't even know it's been
- 34:59Speaker 9: so in a long time.
- 35:02Speaker 4: Maybe the old office.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Okay, wow, that was that was twenty twenty three.
- 35:07Speaker 4: Then maybe here I have no clue. All right, I
- 35:10Speaker 4: don't remember.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Leastion ten. The topic is gear. This is for all
- 35:13Speaker 2: the marbles. Colombia, Pendleton, Keene, Danner, bench Made, Leatherman, Gerber,
- 35:20Speaker 2: and Louipold are all headquartered in this state. Seth quick
- 35:27Speaker 2: to answer, Brody taking his time. Oh this isn't It's
- 35:31Speaker 2: gonna be a uh what do they call it?
- 35:34Speaker 4: Tiebreaker?
- 35:35Speaker 2: Colombia, Timebreaker, Danner, bench Made, Leatherman, Gerber, and Louipold are
- 35:44Speaker 2: all headquartered in this state.
- 35:47Speaker 4: I definitely have it down to two.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Okay. Marge and Yanni agree on what the state is.
- 35:54Speaker 10: And I'm pretty sure maybe the first one no longer
- 35:57Speaker 10: is there potentially, or maybe they moved it from the
- 36:02Speaker 10: capital of the state due to some conflicts.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Brody, how do you feel about your answer?
- 36:09Speaker 7: Ninety nine point oh it's a conflict.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Nine okay, give it away. Core Are you gonna come
- 36:16Speaker 2: up with an answer? Columbia, Pendleton, Bench Made, Leipold one
- 36:22Speaker 2: out of one.
- 36:24Speaker 3: I think you should have at least a one out
- 36:26Speaker 3: of forty nine forty eight chance.
- 36:30Speaker 7: I mean, go ahead, write another one down.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Marg Marge declared it a bad guess for the story.
- 36:37Speaker 4: There's no helger mites there.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Either.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Probably give us, give us another making a third swap.
- 36:46Speaker 10: Maybe go the other direction, the other direction.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Go ahead and reveal your answer. We have set saying
- 36:55Speaker 2: Organ Roman says Organ Yannis Oregon, Marge Oregon, Corey Washington,
- 37:00Speaker 2: and Brody Oregon. The correct answer is Oregon. That means
- 37:07Speaker 2: we're gonna go to overtime between Brody and Wonderful. All
- 37:11Speaker 2: of those brands are headquartered in Portland, besides Bench Made,
