- 2:38- Yeah, so all that goes directly to it.
- 2:40There's some fun things that we're gonna be doing,
- 2:42like a brain eating, a competition.
- 2:45- Yeah, our friend Stephanie's making the brain.
- 2:47- Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 2:49- She's practicing.
- 2:50- Last year we had a last minute brain for paw
- 2:52and it did not turn into brain.
- 2:53- We ran out of brain.
- 2:54- Yeah, we ran out of brain.
- 2:55- It's been a fresh brain.
- 2:56- If you've listened to this podcast,
- 2:58you already know that.
- 2:59(laughing)
- 3:00- We haven't had brains in 35 years.
- 3:02- No, but it's been really cool.
- 3:06And I think for me, I'm just so proud of you
- 3:11for all the work that you've been doing.
- 3:12- Thank you.
- 3:13- It's not easy to knock on a door every single day
- 3:17and in the great state of Arizona,
- 3:20we do not know what door you are knocking on.
- 3:22- We've got some interesting interactions.
- 3:24One dude just opened his door shirtless,
- 3:25which is rubbing his belly.
- 3:27(laughing)
- 3:28And I was like, "Hey, I'm gonna talk about Prop 139."
- 3:30He's like, "Yeah, so, right."
- 3:32And just kind of like going around the belly button
- 3:34a little too aggressively.
- 3:36And I was like,
- 3:37"You just built, yes, here's the floor."
- 3:40- He took it back.
- 3:41- He was gonna vote for abortion, though.
- 3:42- He did, he's like, "All right."
- 3:44He was feeling his umbilical cord.
- 3:46And he was like, "Yeah, yeah."
- 3:48- I got a little...
- 3:50(laughing)
- 3:52- He didn't earn acid deep.
- 3:54So he's voting yes, though.
- 3:56- Yeah, so...
- 3:57- So I love that.
- 3:58So yes, but I'm not serving beer as Salil Nasex.
- 4:01I am walking door to door for abortion rights.

- 4:28- Absolutely.
- 4:29- That's where we are.
- 4:30- 100%.
- 4:32- What have you been up to?
- 4:33- I haven't seen you in ages.
- 4:34I know you were like, "Gravely ill."
- 4:36- Oh, well, you were not going to talk to me.
- 4:39- Well, you were not going to talk to me.
- 4:40So I was hospitalized and I lost 20 pounds.
- 4:45- You look incredible.
- 4:46- You look like you didn't before.
- 4:48- Thank you, no, I've been quite sick.
- 4:50So. - We do not endorse you.
- 4:53- You see 20 pounds from sickness and just really that.
- 4:56(laughing)
- 4:57- But in my very sickness, I have been watching a ton of movies,
- 5:02a ton of shows, some nostalgia.
- 5:06Like every time I get really sick,
- 5:07I have to rewatch the vampire diaries.
- 5:10And that's why it's my comfort show.
- 5:12- Mine used to be the OC when I got really sick.
- 5:14I would have to rewatch the OC.
- 5:16- Oh, it's so good.
- 5:17I also, another one that I've started to put into the mix
- 5:20is Desperate Housewives.
- 5:22- I was thinking about starting that
- 5:24because I've been seeing a lot of clips
- 5:26on Instagram reels and it looks really funny.
- 5:29- It's, you've never seen it.
- 5:31Oh my gosh, okay, it gets a little cookie towards the end.
- 5:33Like all TV shows that should have ended.
- 5:36- But the first couple of seasons are so good.
- 5:39You should watch it.
- 5:40- And it's quite the time capsule of the 2000s.
- 5:45- Of like, okay, what was it like to be
- 5:47or a publican before MAGA?
- 5:50- Ooh, are they all republicans?
- 5:52- And like rich ladies.
- 5:53- There's one who's free, who's like an NRA,
- 5:56like perfect mother, like a republican.
- 6:00And so it's kind of interesting to like look
- 6:02at those archetypes of mothers and women.
- 6:06And I think during its time,
- 6:08it was such an influential show
- 6:10because they were never showing women of that age.
- 6:13- Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:14- They're all one of their cities.
- 6:16- Yeah, they're all housewives.
- 6:17- Are they desperate?
- 6:19- Yeah, they are desperate.
- 6:20And of course it created the iconic
- 6:23real housewives.
- 6:26- I always get them mixed up.
- 6:27- Yeah.
- 6:28- Yeah, so it created a lot of iconic pop culture
- 6:31that we see today.
- 6:33But one movie that I really wanted to talk about
- 6:35that is incredibly pertinent to everything going on
- 6:38in pop culture that I know you and I both saw.
- 6:41- Oh my gosh.
- 6:43- Blink twice.
- 6:44- So, and so I'm gonna try not to spoil it.
- 6:48This is Zoe Kravitz, directorial debut
- 6:51and screenplay writing debut.
- 6:53- She killed it.
- 6:54- And I, like, of course, so Zoe Kravitz has been
- 6:59a NEPO baby her entire life.
- 7:02- She's in your NEPO baby car.
- 7:03- She's in my NEPO baby car.
- 7:04I love that woman so much.
- 7:06But obviously she has been in pop culture
- 7:09and has clearly been to a lot of ditty parties
- 7:13within her life.
- 7:14- And you can tell from this movie.
- 7:17- Yeah, and so Blink twice is incredibly good.
- 7:21Chaining Tatum is in it and plays a very unconventional role.
- 7:26He is this wealthy billionaire and it kind of starts out
- 7:31with him like doing your standard YouTuber apology.
- 7:34- Yeah, I'm taking time to work on my mental health.
- 7:37- Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, kind of Jeff Bezos type character.
- 7:43- And so I watched the movie and I can't even begin to tell.
- 7:47It's so good.
- 7:48Like go see it in theaters, pay the $20 on Amazon Prime
- 7:53to actually rent and watch it.
- 7:55- I saw in theaters for the first time
- 7:57and then when I was over at your house
- 7:58and you wanted to rewatch it the next day.
- 8:00- Yeah, I watched it.
- 8:01I was like, it's so good.
- 8:02I had to rewatch it again.
- 8:04- Watch because you catch things
- 8:06that you didn't the first time around.
- 8:08And then you talked to me about the color theory.
- 8:10- Yes.
- 8:11- And again, we don't want to spoil it because it's so good.
- 8:14But like different colors throughout the movie.
- 8:16- Represent different things.
- 8:17- Represent different things that are going on
- 8:18in the character's lives.
- 8:20And it is so feminist.
- 8:22- It's the most feminist movie.
- 8:24It's so good.
- 8:25So he craves did amazing.
- 8:27Channing Tatum takes on a very different role
- 8:31than you've ever seen him in.
- 8:32- Yeah, he absolutely crushes it.
- 8:34- He's so good.
- 8:35- Lots of actors in that movie where they pop up
- 8:38and you're like, oh shit, they're in this?
- 8:39Oh wow, look at that.
- 8:40- Yeah, you're like, oh my gosh.
- 8:42And with everything going on with Diddy,
- 8:45all the comporter, now Eric Adams being indicted,
- 8:49it is really, really, really relevant.
- 8:53- Very timely.
- 8:53- It's crazy that Zoe Kravitz released this movie.
- 8:57Right as all this was happening with her history.
- 9:00And it really does feel like a kind of a glimp,
- 9:05like an artistic glimpse into what the hell is going on.
- 9:09- Yeah, and she made it seem
- 9:10like she's seen some shit.
- 9:12And you could watch this movie and think,
- 9:14oh this is just fiction, but it's, oh god.
- 9:17- Oh no, oh god.
- 9:18- This is a glimpsum.
- 9:19- Into what's going down.
- 9:20- Yeah, and I have always kind of been this
- 9:24conspiratorial crazy, like a podcast.
- 9:28- And I'm right out of this side of the podcast
- 9:30where I'm like, there's some weird stuff going on.
- 9:33- I'm doing a Hollywood shit.
- 9:35- Like I remember talking about Justin Bieber and Diddy,
- 9:37like months and months and months ago.
- 9:39And then now all this stuff is coming up.
- 9:42And so I watched that movie and with all the Diddy stuff
- 9:46going on right now, like I have not stopped thinking about.
- 9:50- It's one of those movies that stick with you
- 9:52and you keep thinking of other little things that happen
- 9:54in the movie that you're like, oh gosh,
- 9:56I wonder what that meant.
- 9:57Or like you didn't realize it until you were laying
- 10:00in bed or brushing your teeth.
- 10:01And you're like, oh my god,
- 10:02I didn't even think about it that way.
- 10:03- Yeah, and we haven't done a Diddy Jeep dive
- 10:06in all the allegations just because there is
- 10:08so much coming out.
- 10:09- Yeah.
- 10:10- And it's been really, really hard today
- 10:13as of where we're recording.
- 10:15120 additional allegations have been filed against him.
- 10:19There's a cross-action lawsuit.
- 10:21- Oh my gosh.
- 10:22- That got filed today.
- 10:23I mean, I think we're gonna continue to see more
- 10:27and more and more clear about it.
- 10:28- Oh my gosh, but I think people fall down.
- 10:31But there are a lot of great YouTubers and podcasters
- 10:35covering the topic.
- 10:36- You've never heard the name Jaguar, right?
- 10:39She is spitting truth.
- 10:41- I have not really.
- 10:43- Jaguar, right? Like W.I. are.
- 10:45- Yeah, yes.
- 10:46- Okay.
- 10:47- So she's actually got kind of sounding
- 10:49the alarm on Diddy four years and years and years.
- 10:53And everyone was like, oh, she's kooky.
- 10:55Like no one believes her.
- 10:56'Cause she just didn't make it.
- 10:58- Women are hysterical for things.
- 11:00I was just talking about this today at the other job.
- 11:02The day job.
- 11:03People, women are always accused of being hysterical
- 11:05about things and then we end up being right.
- 11:07- And then it takes 200 people to say,
- 11:10yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:11- But like over and over again with its stuff like this
- 11:15when they're saying, no, this guy's a creep, listen to us
- 11:18or no like, rovy way, it's gonna be over turned.
- 11:21Please listen to us.
- 11:22Oh, no, you're overreacting.
- 11:24You're just being hysterical, right?
- 11:27And that's kind of this movie.
- 11:28It's, I mean, I, again, no spoilers,
- 11:30but it's a lot of, oh, you're just overreacting.
- 11:33- Yeah, I mean, it's fun.
- 11:34- Gaslighting.
- 11:35- Yes, yes, yes.
- 11:36If you haven't seen it, yeah, go watch it.
- 11:38It's so good.
- 11:39And it's a great piece of media and original media,
- 11:43which I think we're really have been missing
- 11:46within this world quite a bit.
- 11:48But yeah, those, definitely say I started
- 11:51Desperate Housewives.
- 11:52- Where can you watch Desperate Housewives?
- 11:54- It's on Hulu.
- 11:55- It's, yeah.
- 11:56- So.
- 11:57- I'm gonna do it.
- 11:58- Yeah, I'm gonna show it.
- 11:59It's worth it.
- 12:00- I'll take a break from my disaster movies
- 12:01that I watch every Thursday.
- 12:02- Yeah, the disaster movie is canvassing.
- 12:05I think you need like a little happy.
- 12:08- No, I can't miss all day and talk to people
- 12:10about trying to restore bodily autonomy to women.
- 12:12And then I go home and I'm like,
- 12:14what's the most violent tragic movie I could watch?
- 12:17- Have I watched a day after tomorrow?
- 12:20- That is my comfort movie though.
- 12:21I love that movie so much.
- 12:22- It is, but yeah, and we're--
- 12:24- There are acutubates of Catholicism
- 12:26and I have to like it.
- 12:27- Yeah.
- 12:28(laughing)
- 12:29- That's the reason you like the movie.
- 12:30- I was an acutococaptain.
- 12:33- Okay.
- 12:34- We never got to go to New York though.
- 12:36- Oh, I was a math lead.
- 12:37- Okay.
- 12:38- Sure.
- 12:39- What's 300 plus, or should I give a round number?
- 12:44- 300 plus four.
- 12:46- 300 times 1,475.
- 12:47- Let me just say that math was my worst subject.
- 12:52- Okay, but then how are you a math lead?
- 12:54- Because that's what they call it in Mean Girls.
- 12:55That was a joke.
- 12:56- Okay.
- 12:57- That's what the kids at the bus stop used to call me.
- 12:59- You know, fake news.
- 13:00(laughing)
- 13:01Fake news.
- 13:02- No, I was good at speech.
- 13:03I was great at speeches 'cause I'd be talking.
- 13:06- Go figure.
- 13:07- Bitch, be talking.
- 13:08- Go figure.
- 13:09- I love that.
- 13:09I love that.
- 13:10Okay, let's go into our topic somehow from there.
- 13:13- Well, as we begin our favorite month of the year,
- 13:20we wanted to talk about a little thing
- 13:23that causes spooky feelings in us
- 13:25that might not just be horror.
- 13:28And we wanted to talk about this thing called
- 13:30uncanny valley.
- 13:32So, Sean, do you know what uncanny valley is?
- 13:34- Uncanny valley is a theory proposed in 1970
- 13:39by Japanese robot assist Masihiro Mori.
- 13:45The term uncanny valley is a translation
- 13:47from the Japanese phrase,
- 13:48"Wukimi no tani," which was later translated into English
- 13:52by a British person.
- 13:53We're not gonna say that name.
- 13:55- Yeah.
- 13:56- The Japanese name, Chihizo Rikari in 1978.
- 14:01- So the theory is that as an object becomes more human
- 14:04like an appearance, people's affinity towards it increases.
- 14:08But at a certain point, the object is almost human,
- 14:13but not quite there.
- 14:15It evokes feelings of like ayriness or like a brother ew
- 14:18like something is off.
- 14:19It's just not right in uncannyness.
- 14:23The sudden drop in affinity creates that valley.
- 14:25So when we're like, "Oh, it looks like a person."
- 14:27I like that oh god, it looks too much like a person,
- 14:29but something's off, something's off.
- 14:31Then it's the valley.
- 14:32- Yeah, and it's very scientific.
- 14:34Again, we're not gonna, you know,
- 14:35explain the theory of Masihiro,
- 14:37but really it becomes this common occurrence
- 14:42within humans where if something looks human like,
- 14:47but isn't quite there,
- 14:49creates a sense of deep unsettling within us.
- 14:54So it's always, things that don't create
- 14:57on Canny Valley from here like the Avatar movie, right?
- 15:00Because they're humanoid.
- 15:02- Yeah, they're human, yeah, they're blue.
- 15:05They're humanoid, but you know they're not supposed
- 15:07to be humans, right?
- 15:08Or like Sanos, he's humanoid.
- 15:11But it doesn't create that Iqfactor in me
- 15:13because he's so far removed still from being human.
- 15:17- I think it's just called that.
- 15:18- Every example you get was like,
- 15:19- Sanos has purple.
- 15:21- The weird chin and there's different things
- 15:23that don't create on Canny Valley.
- 15:25It's when they are so close to having it down,
- 15:29but there's still that one thing off
- 15:31that you're like, this isn't quite right for me.
- 15:34Like Princess Leia and Rogue One, right?
- 15:38So she shows up at the end and it's supposed
- 15:41to be a D.H. Carrie Fisher and they do such a good job,
- 15:45and it's almost there, but there's something
- 15:47a little too waxy about her face.
- 15:49She's a little dead behind the eyes,
- 15:51and so it creates that unease because you know
- 15:55that they're trying to convince you
- 15:57that that's really Carrie Fisher and that's a human,
- 15:59but it's definitely not.
- 16:01- Yeah, and it's so interesting to me
- 16:03because when I think about the uncanny Valley theory,
- 16:06to me, it's like I always wanna go back to
- 16:09what in human evolution made us feel that way.
- 16:14For it to be such a human experience
- 16:18and a natural thing for us to do,
- 16:21like we're just unsettling.
- 16:23Like what is it about that came from human evolution
- 16:28for us to get there?
- 16:30And that's where we put on our tinfoil hat
- 16:32in this little theory here is you know,
- 16:36the further that you go down, you know,
- 16:38you say like, oh, I don't like going to Madame Tussos
- 16:41because it really creeps me out.
- 16:43And you know, they're just waxy and like there's something wrong,
- 16:46like those don't creep me out as much
- 16:49because I know their wax and like they're not moving
- 16:53and no one's trying to convince me that they're real.
- 16:56But I could see how that would give other people in here.
- 16:58- Oh, it gives me such a meaning.
- 16:59- I can see that.
- 17:00- Especially if they're bad.
- 17:02Like if they're really good, then I'm like,
- 17:03oh shit, that really looks like Lady Gaga.
- 17:05- Yeah.
- 17:06- And I realize it's like,
- 17:07- Don't you think Lady Gaga's not look like Lady Gaga?
- 17:09- It's at different museums.
- 17:10- Okay, different.
- 17:11We got the very big grade Madame Tussos.
- 17:15- I think you go to like the dollar store
- 17:17and like the Uma is, I wanna look at it.
- 17:20- Okay, 'cause I feel like I've seen
- 17:21the really bad Madame Tussos.
- 17:23- The really bad Madame Tussos.
- 17:24- If they're really bad, then it gives me that unease
- 17:26'cause it's not even close to human like,
- 17:29but if it looks good, then I'm like,
- 17:31then I just appreciate for the art that it is.
- 17:33But I could see how it could give other people
- 17:35like they're too dead behind the eyes.
- 17:37There's something creepy about it.
- 17:39- Yeah, yeah.
- 17:40And there's like a lot of psychological studies
- 17:43that people have gone through to say like, okay,
- 17:46what is it?
- 17:48And they haven't necessarily like nailed down
- 17:50why they think it is that this phenomenon
- 17:54happens within us.
- 17:56Some some sign to say,
- 17:58hey, we're its pathogen avoidance.
- 18:00So it's our body's trying to say like, okay, don't get sick.
- 18:04Or you know, if it's a kind of a mismatch theory,
- 18:09it's a threat avoidance and it's all a meat selection.
- 18:13- The meat selection one is my favorite one
- 18:15because if you see something that's not quite humanoid,
- 18:18you're like, they can't have my babies.
- 18:21- Yeah.
- 18:22- I can't insuminate that thing.
- 18:23- Yeah, where it's like, is it just that, you know,
- 18:27we, because we've seen it where attractive people
- 18:31are more than likely to get away with crimes
- 18:34just because they are attractive.
- 18:37We're more trusting of people who are attractive.
- 18:39- We were just talking about this study
- 18:41that they show kids like a picture of a
- 18:44conventionally attractive person
- 18:46and then a conventionally unattractive person,
- 18:50I guess by whatever societal standards you want to say that.
- 18:52And the kid, they're like, which one is nicer
- 18:55and the kid always points to the pretty person?
- 18:58Which one do you trust more?
- 19:00Which one's evil?
- 19:01And it's always, yeah.
- 19:02- Yeah, and it's really, really interesting just to look at it.
- 19:06And then my and a lot of the darker side
- 19:10of the internet ones, is species recognition.
- 19:15And so this kind of comes by, if you've heard of
- 19:19on Cani Valley and you're on the wrong side of the internet,
- 19:22this is where you get into the lizard people,
- 19:25the skin walkers, your form, your story, the story.
- 19:29- I know, I keep bringing it up.
- 19:31(laughing)
- 19:34But, you know, I think that it is such an interesting question
- 19:38of why does it create this feeling of unsettlingness
- 19:43where we've evolved to feel about way.
- 19:47- I think we've just all day, every day,
- 19:49it's impossible to avoid seeing another human.
- 19:53Even if you don't leave your house,
- 19:54you're likely to look in the mirror, right?
- 19:56You are, unless you've got all the mirrors in your house.
- 20:00- What are we going to swine?
- 20:01We're going to get full plastic surgery.
- 20:03- Yeah, right.
- 20:05Where you're divergent.
- 20:06Where you're like, I don't remember that.
- 20:08In that book series, she can't look at herself in the mirror.
- 20:11And then she finally does.
- 20:12And it's like, wow, I'm hot.
- 20:13(laughing)
- 20:16But you can't avoid seeing another human.
- 20:18So I think even from when we are first born
- 20:22and we imprint on our mother's faces
- 20:25and we finally start making eye contact
- 20:27with our mothers and fathers,
- 20:29like we realize what a human face is supposed to look like.
- 20:32What life behind the eyes looks like.
- 20:35I mean, this is dark too,
- 20:36but if you see like a dead body,
- 20:39like it gives kind of that uncanny value
- 20:42because you know it's a human,
- 20:44but there's just something missing.
- 20:45It's that spark of life and you're like, yeah.
- 20:48- Yeah, I mean, it's a dead body.
- 20:50- I mean, it's a dead body.
- 20:50- I mean, it's a dead body.
- 20:51- I mean, it's a dead body.
- 20:52- I mean, it's a dead body.
- 20:53- Yeah.
- 20:54- Yeah.
- 20:55(laughing)
- 20:58- But it also, you're like,
- 20:58there's just something off about that.
- 21:00- Yeah.
- 21:01- You could tell the difference
- 21:01between dead and sleeping.
- 21:02- Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 21:04- Yeah, definitely.
- 21:05- So there are so many instances
- 21:07within pop culture that we feel this
- 21:09and we remember.
- 21:11And so the phenomenon, although it is quite complex
- 21:14and we did not explain it to you in the best,
- 21:17I guess if you wanna really go into
- 21:20all of the different representations of it,
- 21:23we see it all the time and like Elon Musk
- 21:26was just pictured with this.
- 21:29- He really must give me like,
- 21:30- Yeah, yeah.
- 21:31- And Sam is a person.
- 21:32- Yeah, Sam, he does give on candy valley.
- 21:35- But did you see him with that robot lady,
- 21:37humanoid thing that he was with?
- 21:39- Like a sex robot?
- 21:40- Yeah, well, I don't know if that's what I was for,
- 21:42but he was at a party.
- 21:43- I mean, yeah, that's obvious what it was for.
- 21:45- Girl, but.
- 21:46- Grimes dumped him.
- 21:47- Yeah.
- 21:48(laughing)
- 21:49- It was step one, danger grime.
- 21:51- Step two.
- 21:52- To get stuffy to make you the humanoid.
- 21:54- Grimes is about as close to dating a robot as you can.
- 21:57- I would agree with that.
- 21:58- I love her.
- 21:59- I would agree with that.
- 22:00- She's definitely got robot parts to do with that.
- 22:01- Keep going.
- 22:02- And, you know, I think there should
- 22:04just so many different areas and ways that our brains
- 22:09are kind of working with us evolutionary to try to save us.
- 22:12But I wanna talk a little bit about
- 22:14some uncommon spooky movies right after this break.
- 22:18(dramatic music)
- 22:21- One of my favorite instances of Uncanny Valley
- 22:26that kinda comes to mind when I think of the concept
- 22:30is that movie Polar Express from 2004 with Tom Hanks.
- 22:34Why didn't they just make it live action?
- 22:36- I don't know.
- 22:37- Because the character, it's Tom Hanks.
- 22:39They make like a CG Tom Hanks.
- 22:42- Yeah.
- 22:43- They could easily have made this a live action movie
- 22:44and I think it would have been a lot better,
- 22:46but it's just, they're trying so hard to make them
- 22:49look human like that it's so Uncanny and uncomfortable.
- 22:54Either make it totally live action
- 22:56or make it a part to-- - Or make it more part to me.
- 22:57- Exactly.
- 22:58That right there in the middle is just,
- 23:00see what, sometimes I think it's so interesting
- 23:03'cause my brother and I grew up, same life, obviously.
- 23:08We moved all the same places.
- 23:09We went to all the same schools, even the same college.
- 23:12- Date of the same guys.
- 23:13- Yeah, totally.
- 23:14And so my brother freaking loves this film.
- 23:19- We love to put it on every Christmas.
- 23:22- Yeah, it makes me feel like Crampus is coming into the home.
- 23:27Every time you do this, why are we watching this?
- 23:31And so it does depend.
- 23:33I think a lot of people are impacted very differently.
- 23:36I think one of the ones that really freaks me out
- 23:39but it does not fit with the Avatar is Cats.
- 23:44- Oh my God, Cats is so Uncanny Valley.
- 23:48Because they have human faces.
- 23:49- Yes.
- 23:50- It's the actual faces of the actors and actresses,
- 23:53but then the rest of them is not human.
- 23:55- Yeah.
- 23:56- I watched this with my friends a couple years ago
- 23:59for one of our friends birthday parties made like a sleepover.
- 24:02- Did you dress up like the Cats to Cats?
- 24:04- We all had to work cat ears.
- 24:05- Okay.
- 24:06- So we all work cat ears.
- 24:07- Did you feel your face to make sure you weren't
- 24:09more fit and more?
- 24:10- We had a drinking game.
- 24:11So every time they said gelical cats, we had to drink.
- 24:15- Oh, how fucked up were you?
- 24:16- So drunk.
- 24:17- Yeah.
- 24:17- So I've no idea what a gelical cat is in this day.
- 24:20- I don't know, I don't think I ever actually saw
- 24:22the Cats music.
- 24:23- And whenever the actress Elba appears nude on film.
- 24:27- Ooh.
- 24:28- I mean, I wish.
- 24:29- I would've watched it for that.
- 24:30- But he's not, but he's a cat.
- 24:31- He's a cat.
- 24:32- He's a cat.
- 24:33- He's a cat.
- 24:34- He's just a cat.
- 24:35- So he's not quite naked.
- 24:37It's just, it's not appropriate.
- 24:39- Okay, so we were very drunk.
- 24:40- If it was the wire, each of us Elba.
- 24:42- Ooh.
- 24:43- Or the Luther each of us Elba.
- 24:45- Okay.
- 24:46Well, that took me away from my cat.
- 24:47- Not cats, not cats.
- 24:48- Not cats.
- 24:49- No, but literally if you could probably convince me
- 24:53Taylor Swift is evil, if the only image I ever saw of her
- 24:56was hers that cat.
- 24:58- With her cat boobs.
- 24:58- Yeah.
- 24:59(laughs)
- 25:01- I also hated it.
- 25:02- We would take away my love of hers.
- 25:03- And just go for a photography.
- 25:04If that was the only image I ever saw of her.
- 25:06- Just in your head.
- 25:07- I also hate when they give female cartoon characters
- 25:11breasts.
- 25:12- Okay.
- 25:14- This is a total different tangent.
- 25:15- Yeah.
- 25:16- But like if you watch old Hannah Barbra cartoon,
- 25:18it's like the girl chicken comes up.
- 25:19She's got like chicken tints.
- 25:21(laughs)
- 25:22It makes no sense.
- 25:24And the guy chicken just looks like a chicken.
- 25:27And she walks up and she's got like a D cup
- 25:29and like big lips.
- 25:31- And she's like, "You're doing Danny chicken tints."
- 25:33- Yes, and like, dude, like we talked about the fish
- 25:37from Charles Taylor.
- 25:38- Okay, that's a fuck up old fish.
- 25:40- Why does she have to be fuckable
- 25:42and the other fish is just like,
- 25:44but she's the Angelina Jolie fish.
- 25:45- It says she but don't give animals tits.
- 25:48- Yeah, okay.
- 25:49- That's it.
- 25:50- That's the end of the episode.
- 25:51- That's the end of the episode.
- 25:52- So tune in next week for another episode.
- 25:56- Yeah, the other example of
- 25:58Candy Valley that I really like.
- 26:00And the fans made this one better.
- 26:02So when the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog kind of,
- 26:06he looked too human like.
- 26:09- Okay.
- 26:09- He had like human teeth like chompers.
- 26:13- I remember the outrage, but I don't remember the image.
- 26:16- It was awful.
- 26:17I'll show it to you after this.
- 26:18- Maybe it's because of my fear of Uncanny Valley.
- 26:21- Yeah. - But like, I just hate it so much.
- 26:23- The internet freaked out because
- 26:25it didn't look like Sonic from the cartoon,
- 26:28the video game, his eyes were far apart like a humans.
- 26:32So he had like a bridge between his eyes, he had teeth.
- 26:35And everyone was like, that's not Sonic the Hedgehog.
- 26:38I don't know what the fuck that thing is,
- 26:40but get it away from me.
- 26:42Kill it with fire.
- 26:43So because the internet freaked out so much,
- 26:47the changed the movie and replaced him
- 26:51and made him look like the Sonic that we know and love.
- 26:53And then it's going on to have,
- 26:55it's the third movie for some reason.
- 26:57I don't know, I've been seen in movies.
- 26:59Hey, the fans got that Uncanny Valley change.
- 27:02- Right.
- 27:03Some really popular culture, Uncanny Valley examples include
- 27:08on top of, you know, polar express.
- 27:10That's probably the most renowned.
- 27:11- Yeah.
- 27:12- Red House.
- 27:13- As a monster house.
- 27:16I don't think I ever saw that one.
- 27:17- Never seen that one.
- 27:18- Beowulf.
- 27:19- Which, yeah, it, you've got to say.
- 27:21- Again, another movie.
- 27:22Like why?
- 27:23- Make your life action.
- 27:24- Yeah, and I think this goes into the AI argument
- 27:29of selling digital likeness.
- 27:31- Yeah.
- 27:32- Now I think it really does become like,
- 27:35because sometimes when you do look at these AI
- 27:38created images, like people who make their AI
- 27:42LinkedIn like headshot or whatever.
- 27:44- Oh gosh.
- 27:45- You did.
- 27:46- They did me Uncanny Valley because the eyes.
- 27:47- I miss the eyes.
- 27:48- The eyes.
- 27:49- It's the eyes, yeah.
- 27:50- I think that's it.
- 27:51- It's the window to the human soul and life,
- 27:53whatever you believe.
- 27:54But like it's always in the eyes that you can tell
- 27:56that something is not real.
- 27:58- Yeah.
- 27:59- Another one that I like is Tron Legacy.
- 28:01I really like that movie, but they de-age Jeff Bridges
- 28:05and de-aged characters have gotten so much better
- 28:07over the years.
- 28:08- Yeah.
- 28:09- Now it's just a filter, baby.
- 28:10- Right, literally.
- 28:11- I'm moving it to my self-on-chat,
- 28:12- Yeah, this is what we look like.
- 28:15(laughing)
- 28:16- Yeah, well that's actually a really interesting point.
- 28:18Like are we going to lose that the more and more we get
- 28:22a part of filters in filter face?
- 28:25- Right, and I think so.
- 28:26I mean, you can tell for the most part still.
- 28:29Okay, that person filtered their face.
- 28:31That person used face to the extreme.
- 28:34- Like seven times.
- 28:35- Yeah, but seven times?
- 28:36- Seven times.
- 28:37- It's a part to tell.
- 28:39- It is, it's getting better, but yeah.
- 28:40It is kind of interesting to think about that.
- 28:44And as we move into a filter world on social media,
- 28:49- In plastic surgery.
- 28:52- In plastic surgery.
- 28:53I mean, have you, okay, two people who I maybe real people,
- 28:58I don't know.
- 28:59- I don't know.
- 29:00- I don't know.
- 29:01JD Vance and Mad Gates.
- 29:02- Okay.
- 29:03- Laura.
- 29:04- Mad Gates is plastic surgery.
- 29:06- Oh my God.
- 29:07- That is so much.
- 29:08- Is literally the villain from Incredible.
- 29:11- Okay, will you see him recently?
- 29:12- Not recently.
- 29:13- Is it eyebrows or what?
- 29:15- Yes, it's scary.
- 29:16- You know what's so funny is we're like,
- 29:18we're not gonna, we're not gonna body shape anymore.
- 29:21- I'm like, I'm gonna fucking out of my pants.
- 29:23- They're my sad, shunistic, fascist,
- 29:25- Yeah.
- 29:26- That we will body shape.
- 29:26- You deserve it.
- 29:27You deserve all the shape.
- 29:28- Yeah.
- 29:29- Yes, it's like at what point do plastic surgery trends
- 29:33take over and go so far that people don't look humanoid anymore?
- 29:38They don't look like humans anymore.
- 29:39- So yeah.
- 29:39- If you remove all of your buccal fat
- 29:41in your eyebrows or to your hairline and like,
- 29:45at what point do you see someone go,
- 29:47that's not quite a human anymore.
- 29:49- Yeah, no, Google Mac Gates is new face.
- 29:52- It's unsettling.
- 29:53It's the scariest thing in the world.
- 29:55Right before I came here, I was watching the VP debate.
- 29:58- And it's my gaze at the VP debate.
- 30:00- I'm a big fan.
- 30:01- A bunch of fans.
- 30:02- I don't know if it's the eyeliner.
- 30:03I don't know if it's his inability
- 30:05to have a normal human conversation.
- 30:07- Say any just a terrible person.
- 30:08- Coming from child freak.
- 30:09- No freak at, ladies.
- 30:10- He just can't, like he doesn't speak
- 30:13at a rhythmic pace of a human being.
- 30:16Like, we're two people who speak for a living.
- 30:19- We do.
- 30:20- And for better words.
- 30:20- Yeah, for better words.
- 30:21And like, I, I, I, it freaks me out.
- 30:24Like I don't, I don't know.
- 30:25- His voice gives you uncanny down.
- 30:27- Just know all of it.
- 30:29All of it, like literally.
- 30:31- I've never believed in a lizard person till then, you know?
- 30:35Like, oh my God.
- 30:36- We're getting deep in the kids' work in so far.
- 30:39- I love it so much.
- 30:40- Maybe I'll watch it tonight when I get home.
- 30:42I don't know.
- 30:42I need a glass of wine in a nap.
- 30:44- I don't think you need more politics.
- 30:45- I'm so exhausted.
- 30:46(laughing)
- 30:48- Another really one that I think is kind of
- 30:52a newer reference is Megan.
- 30:54- And I, that one was okay for me because she's supposed
- 30:57to be a doll.
- 30:58- Yeah.
- 30:59- So that one, I think she looks doll enough.
- 31:01- Exactly.
- 31:02- Where it's not so creepy.
- 31:03- I totally agree.
- 31:05But I can see how it could give other people the ilk.
- 31:07Like, but I thought it was, I thought it was well done.
- 31:09- Yeah.
- 31:10- Justice League 2017, they digitally removed
- 31:14Henry Cavill's mustache.
- 31:15I mean, one of the scenes when he's Superman.
- 31:18And it's so obvious.
- 31:20And this is a delicious man.
- 31:22This is maybe one of the most handsome men I've ever seen.
- 31:24- I would agree about that.
- 31:25- He's insanely good looking.
- 31:26But his upper lip is just so smooth and large.
- 31:30And like, and we know that's not what he looks like
- 31:33because our brains can recover.
- 31:36Looks like, I don't know.
- 31:37- I'm pretty good at that one.
- 31:39- My dreams know what Henry Cavill looks like.
- 31:41- Yeah.
- 31:42Anyway.
- 31:44- Sorry, if we lost her there for a second.
- 31:46- Come back.
- 31:47- So it's just, his upper lip gave everybody a candy valley.
- 31:51Okay, I was, I saw, like, I knew that this was a popular one
- 31:56on the list, but I was like, how is Henry Cavill?
- 31:59I'm Candy Valley.
- 32:00- It's the mustache removal.
- 32:01- Okay.
- 32:02- I think that's it.
- 32:03It's because we know what he's supposed to look like.
- 32:05- Okay.
- 32:06- And the film is trying to convince us
- 32:08that this is what he looks like.
- 32:10- Okay.
- 32:10- I think that's a lot of it too.
- 32:11It's like, when you know you're trying,
- 32:13they're trying to get away with it.
- 32:15They can't keep getting away with this.
- 32:17They're trying to convince us these are humans
- 32:19and we know they're not humans.
- 32:21(laughing)
- 32:23- And I know I mentioned Rogue One earlier,
- 32:25but like Grand Moft Harkin was also a complete CG character.
- 32:29- Okay.
- 32:30- And it looked almost exactly like the actor,
- 32:33but just smooth enough that it wasn't quite right.
- 32:35- It was too soft.
- 32:37- He was too soft.
- 32:38- He was too soft for us.
- 32:39- Too soft, blah, blah.
- 32:40- He's too soft for us.
- 32:41- And no life behind those eyeballs.
- 32:43- Well, you know what's interesting is,
- 32:45did you ever watch Usworld?
- 32:47- The first two seasons that were amazing.
- 32:48All of a sudden it went down.
- 32:49- Then I got a little cookie at the sea.
- 32:52- Usworld didn't give me Uncanny Valley.
- 32:55- No.
- 32:56- Like it is kind of unsettling to think,
- 32:58like, oh, those are robots.
- 33:00And that's where the Uncanny Valley theory comes from.
- 33:03But of course they are played by real actors.
- 33:06- And I think that's the thing is,
- 33:07they don't add anything to them to make them look
- 33:11not human or not human.
- 33:13Until obviously their faces open up.
- 33:15But then that's just a robot.
- 33:16- Yeah, but even when I just see them with just the face skin on
- 33:19and then the body,
- 33:21it does give me that feeling.
- 33:23But like certain things like where it's like,
- 33:26I don't know.
- 33:27- It's really so close.
- 33:29- It's so close and it's not right.
- 33:31That's when our brain can pick it apart.
- 33:34Because we know in that show,
- 33:36like you said, if it's just a robot with like a face on it,
- 33:38we know no one's trying to convince us that's a human.
- 33:40We're like, oh, that's a fine robot.
- 33:42I know a robot when I see one, that's a robot.
- 33:44- Wait till Elon gets that final skin on that girl.
- 33:47- That's sex robot.
- 33:49- Sex robots, like that definitely give me Uncanny Valley.
- 33:52Like if you see like in Japan,
- 33:55there's a lot of Tynashidolls.
- 33:57I don't know what they're called.
- 33:58- Oh gosh, I don't know the exact name for it.
- 34:00But like they're really human-like.
- 34:02- We went to a sex shop and we saw some of these,
- 34:04at least Andrew did, I wasn't allowed on that floor.
- 34:06- No, there's no women allowed.
- 34:07- Yes.
- 34:08- But he said they looked pretty realistic,
- 34:12like not quite there.
- 34:13- Yeah, I could see that.
- 34:14- So I could see that.
- 34:16- Now a robot film that really does,
- 34:19kind of give me Uncanny Valley is I Robot.
- 34:22- Because their faces are too human-like.
- 34:24- Yeah, but they're, yeah, they're like in that dip of it.
- 34:29- But again, they're small.
- 34:30They're small.
- 34:31- They're too small.
- 34:32- They're too small.
- 34:33- Smooth, I don't know, I don't know.
- 34:35I think it's a really interesting breakdown of it.
- 34:38- Yeah.
- 34:39- Of what does and what doesn't.
- 34:40I would love to hear the fans if there's something
- 34:42that we said that does.
- 34:43- Yeah, better work.
- 34:44- No, that's fine.
- 34:45- We're totally missing it.
- 34:46- Yeah.
- 34:47- All of those Claymation movies with the Jack Frost
- 34:51in the little Santa.
- 34:53- Those do it for me.
- 34:54The Beetlejuice Far, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
- 34:56with the Claymation.
- 34:58- I think that you might just be afraid of Claymation.
- 35:00- I am.
- 35:01And it's Uncanny Valley.
- 35:03- I really hope someone listening understands it, but.
- 35:06- Never get Olivia Plato.
- 35:10- I like to play with Plato.
- 35:12- But I was an artistic enough to make them look real.
- 35:15- It looks like shit, I like it.
- 35:17(laughing)
- 35:19- That looks nothing like a human.
- 35:20- That's great.
- 35:21- It's not a horse.
- 35:22- That's great.
- 35:23- What if I was a master at Clay sculptures,
- 35:28but they just freaked me out so much
- 35:29in the child that I destroyed them all?
- 35:31- And I never knew it.
- 35:33- Or every time you make one, you're like, it's too good.
- 35:37It must be true.
- 35:39(laughing)
- 35:40- Rip it's head off.
- 35:41- You can't exist in this world.
- 35:43- I love the kid from my toy store.
- 35:45- I love the evil one.
- 35:46- I cut it in your house and you're just surrounded
- 35:48by perfectly molded clay heads.
- 35:51And you're like, they're too good shot,
- 35:52but I can't stop.
- 35:53- It can't stop.
- 35:54- It's actually what I was in the hospital, guys.
- 35:56- I don't like how many Claymations.
- 35:58(laughing)
- 35:59- I believe these hands.
- 36:00- These dirty, dirty hands.
- 36:02(laughing)
- 36:03- Did you ever see us, the film with Jordan Peel?
- 36:06- Yeah, that one didn't get me on Candymalley,
- 36:08but also I saw that movie drunk.
- 36:09- Oh, okay.
- 36:11- I don't know why.
- 36:11- I do have this theory that, okay,
- 36:13there's a delicate balance of seeing a horror movie drunk.
- 36:17- And if you're a little bit tipsy,
- 36:20it is so much scarier.
- 36:21- Yeah, I agree.
- 36:22- Like if you watched the strangers,
- 36:24like one or two beers deep.
- 36:27- We should do that.
- 36:28I haven't seen that movie years.
- 36:30- Oh, ooh.
- 36:31- And I remember it made me really sad.
- 36:33- Apparently the new one is so bad.
- 36:35- Really.
- 36:36- It's so bad, but if you guys want us to,
- 36:38we will watch it for you because
- 36:39there's so much we love you.
- 36:41- Let's watch, yeah, for a related horror movies.
- 36:43Let's, okay, let's watch the strangers
- 36:45after we both get like slightly tipsy next time we know.
- 36:48- Yeah, no, I promise you.
- 36:49- Next time I have a day that I could exist.
- 36:50- We do not condone underage drinking.
- 36:52- No, we are both in our 30s.
- 36:54- We are.
- 36:55- Oh, ladies over here.
- 36:57- But if you are of age covering the grains.
- 37:00- Yeah, if you are of age,
- 37:02have one or two beers before you watch a horror movie
- 37:05and it will scare you more.
- 37:06I don't know what it is.
- 37:07You would think that I would like, like.
- 37:09- Damn, don't you doubt it.
- 37:11- I wonder if you watch any of these movies
- 37:13on the uncanny valley list after like one or two drinks,
- 37:16if they just look perfectly human to you.
- 37:18(laughing)
- 37:20- Were they scared me?
- 37:21- I would love it.
- 37:22- I would love it.
- 37:22- They might scare me more.
- 37:24- You watch Polar Express and you're like,
- 37:26those are real people.

- 37:30then I'm gonna need climations.
- 37:32And we're gonna torture this woman.
- 37:35- For signs.
- 37:35- For signs.
- 37:36(laughing)
- 37:39- I don't think you'll ever get tortured.
- 37:42- Yeah, let's hope so.
- 37:43- What do you think, are we good here?
- 37:46(laughing)

- 38:01as a pop culture junkie.
- 38:02I've seen the first matrix loved it.
- 38:05- Okay.
- 38:06- I saw the second one.
- 38:07Board to tears.
- 38:09- Okay.

- 38:11We have to find something else to do.
- 38:12- I thought you were gonna say
- 38:13you'd never seen the first matrix.
- 38:14- Oh, I saw the first one.
- 38:15- Girl, what are we doing here?
- 38:16- So boring for some reason.
- 38:18But I know there's that scene where they,
- 38:20there's a million of the same guy.
- 38:22Is that on the first one?
- 38:24- That's on the second one.
- 38:25- And those gave me on Candy Valley.
- 38:27- Okay, because there's so many of them.
- 38:28- Because there's so many people.
- 38:29- Yeah.
- 38:30- And they're trying to convince us that like,
- 38:31yeah, they're real.
- 38:32- Okay.
- 38:33- On the note of the matrix two,
- 38:36I would agree with you, not great.
- 38:38However, when they're freaking clubbing in the matrix
- 38:43in that scene, I wanna be there so bad.
- 38:45- Oh yeah.
- 38:46- That scene where they're undergrossing.
- 38:48- Yeah, it's so good.
- 38:50- But like literally, I think about that all the time.
- 38:53Like if I could be in like one crazy club scene,
- 38:56we're gonna do it for Halloween.

- 39:28- We love that.
- 39:29Well, you know, while we don't necessarily understand
- 39:32why uncanny valley happens to us,
- 39:35my personal belief is aliens.
- 39:38I wanna hear aliens.
- 39:39- No, I think the aliens make it absolute.
- 39:41- Yeah.
- 39:42- Like at some point in the world,

- 39:48- We're like, there's something about them
- 39:49that I don't like.
