- 0:00It's okay to make things that feel incomplete.
- 0:03It's okay to make things where we feel like,
- 0:05oh, I could have edited line 17.
- 0:07I could have changed frame eight.
- 0:09It's okay.
- 0:09Give yourself permission.
- 0:10If you're someone's stuck in research mode,
- 0:12you research, you research, you research, you research,
- 0:14or you're someone's stuck in editing mode,
- 0:16you edit, you edit, you edit, you save to draft.
- 0:19Oh, I'd do that all the time.
- 0:21Let yourself share something that you to yourself
- 0:24believe isn't finished and see the power of that
- 0:26and also see how it's received differently than that.
- 0:28Because for you, you live with the idea.
- 0:31So to you, it's not finished.
- 0:32To someone else, they feel invited
- 0:34into your perspective on that idea for the first time.
- 0:37Hello, soul sibling, hello sunshine,
- 0:39hello divine and magical being.
- 0:41Welcome or welcome back.
- 0:43To the soul salon, I hope you enjoyed today's soul session.
- 0:47Every single time I create something,
- 0:49I face this kind of dilemma because I'm so aware of
- 0:53what I didn't say, what I could have said,
- 0:55what I could have said differently,
- 0:57what I could have expressed in a way
- 0:59that was more inclusive or more clear,
- 1:01or I could have told a story to really bring the aliveness
- 1:05of what I was trying to say into more focus.
- 1:07I could have brought in a metaphor.
- 1:09There's something that I forgot to say
- 1:10that I actually had prepared to say before.
- 1:13And it's always so present to me how much more
- 1:16this soul session or this video or this essay could have been.
- 1:20Had I only remembered to say the things
- 1:23that I now know to say,
- 1:25I'll be quite haunted by an episode
- 1:26and what I failed to say or what I felt
- 1:28I could have said differently,
- 1:30but I allow myself to be surprised,
- 1:32presently and also brought back to myself
- 1:35by the reception of the episode of the essay.
- 1:37It's this beautiful reminder to me every single time
- 1:40that we are so hard on ourselves.
- 1:43We are so antagonistic towards ourselves.
- 1:46And if we let that voice win,
- 1:49we actually won't allow the work to reach the people
- 1:52who it's also there to serve and to teach
- 1:56and to enliven in its own way.
- 1:58And so something that I'm really proud of
- 2:00is even as I create things that I feel in some way
- 2:03maybe incomplete.
- 2:05I now see it not as my role as the artist to complete it.
- 2:09That really because I'm someone who creates
- 2:11for the enjoyment for the reception,
- 2:13I don't love the word consumption of others,
- 2:16even though I do use it, but I try not to.
- 2:17Anyways, because I create for the consumption of others,
- 2:20there she did it, there she said she would and she did.
- 2:24I know that it's not really my role to view this
- 2:28as a finished, again, the word product came.
- 2:32They also in my consciousness,
- 2:33how do I get this system out of the way that I see the world?
- 2:36It's my daily work, but essentially I know
- 2:41that this experience is a co-creation.
- 2:44It's not something that I can do on my own.
- 2:47And I think because as artists, as creatives,
- 2:49as people who are making things, whatever you are making,
- 2:52it could be a friendship and the words
- 2:54that you wish you had brought to a conversation.
- 2:56Maybe you were in a conflict with someone
- 2:58and you afterwards you're like, oh my goodness,
- 2:59why didn't I say that?
- 3:01Why didn't I remember to also say, oh,
- 3:02and also this and that?
- 3:04And I think what we are facing when we have that experience
- 3:07of oh, if only I'd said that thing,
- 3:09there's a kind of illusion that we are in confrontation with
- 3:12because had we said that thing,
- 3:13we probably would have come home and said,
- 3:15why didn't I say that other thing?
- 3:16Why didn't I bring up this example or this evidence?
- 3:19These receipts, you know what I mean?
- 3:21Well, why didn't I bring this into the salsa
- 3:24along that day in my case?
- 3:26But what I face is that we are infinite beings.
- 3:29And so of course, when we create something,
- 3:31we are facing this paradox of we have infinite vision
- 3:35and possibility and imagination,
- 3:38but we do kind of have finite ways
- 3:41that we can convey that vision into the material world.
- 3:43What do I mean by that?
- 3:45I can't make a five hour episode of every point
- 3:47and counterpoint and metaphor and example and story.
- 3:51I don't want to say that time is finite
- 3:52because I don't want to play into this kind of war
- 3:55with time that capitalism and colonial consciousness
- 3:58has imposed on us.
- 4:00I don't want to play into the idea
- 4:02that we need to do things the most efficiently.
- 4:03But what I want to sit with at the same time
- 4:05because I love sitting in the paradox,
- 4:07sitting in the contradiction is that there is a way
- 4:10in which we are both infinite and finite
- 4:12and our creativity invites us to be more nourishing.
- 4:15We love an invitation in the salsa lawn.
- 4:17Our creativity invites us to confront
- 4:20to sit with, to accept this beautiful dance
- 4:24between the infinite and the finite.
- 4:27So we may have this vision for this book, this essay,
- 4:31this relationship, right?
- 4:33And in our minds, it's so romantic, it's so perfect,
- 4:36it's so wonderful.
- 4:37We go on a date, we embark on a relationship
- 4:40with a person and what do we confront?
- 4:43They are limitations or they are aspects
- 4:46that we wouldn't choose for ourselves
- 4:48that also make the relationship more real.
- 4:51The most optimistic part of me wants to say more beautiful,
- 4:54but often those aspects we don't experience
- 4:56them as beautiful, but that is real, it's reality
- 5:00that we don't get to experience the tree
- 5:03without sometimes having shade in ways
- 5:05that we wish the sun could shine through, you know what I mean?
- 5:08Like everything has, it's both and,
- 5:11even more than that, more complex than that,
- 5:12but everything holds what it kind of gifts to us
- 5:16and then also what it challenges within us.
- 5:19Essentially, doing this dance
- 5:20between the infinite and the finite,
- 5:22when we are imagining, we need to really recognize
- 5:25that while that is so divine and beautiful
- 5:27and it's really powerful, they say that consciousness,
- 5:30what makes our consciousness so profound
- 5:33is the ability to imagine futures that don't yet exist
- 5:36and that also seem very possible,
- 5:38we could feel them in our bodies, but they aren't here.
- 5:41That's really profound, that's great, that's magic.
- 5:43If you really think about it, that is magic.
- 5:45It doesn't exist and yet it's so vivid to me,
- 5:47I can see it, I'm in the room, I'm in the space,
- 5:50I'm on the stage or wherever you are,
- 5:52I'm in the community circle that I don't yet have,
- 5:54how divine, how precious, how magical,
- 5:56and if we are to recreate the world,
- 5:59we need divine and loving imagination.
- 6:02There's no other way we can create the world
- 6:05and I love critique, but we also need to recognize
- 6:08that it's this dual process, as Angela Davis says,
- 6:10we need both the deconstructed process, dismantling,
- 6:14deconstructing toxic systems,
- 6:16but we also need the constructive process,
- 6:19building, creating, reimagining,
- 6:22and then constructing in alignment with that imagination,
- 6:26rooted in the kind of world we want to see.
- 6:28But as we have this imagination and as we appreciate it,
- 6:31we need to also see that there are going to be times
- 6:34when we can't literally perfectly translate
- 6:38that imagination into the material world,
- 6:40because it's the material world,
- 6:41it has its kind of messiness, it has its obstacles,
- 6:46I don't even like the word obstacles,
- 6:47but it's messy, you know what I mean?
- 6:50It's like if you imagine a painting, cool,
- 6:52then you try to make the painting, you're gonna make a mess,
- 6:54and it's not instantly going to be exactly as you imagined,
- 6:57often maybe because your skill level to put it that way
- 7:01is not yet in alignment with the vision that you have.
- 7:04And that's perfectly fine.
- 7:05And I even think, my best friend was telling me
- 7:08Zadie Smith the author, she even feels like
- 7:10she has to forgive herself all the time
- 7:12for not being able to live up to her vision.
- 7:15She's a best-selling author, she's world-renowned,
- 7:17like you know, she's really an incredible writer,
- 7:19and she still feels that way.
- 7:21So it's kind of this surrender to the fact
- 7:23that this isn't a mistake or this isn't an anomaly,
- 7:27it doesn't mean if you feel like, oh wow,
- 7:28I'm kind of disappointed in how this essay turned out.
- 7:31Or like, oh, this poem, it hit so hard in my dreams
- 7:33or in my head, but then I wrote it and I was like,
- 7:35eh, it's not actually that there's anything wrong
- 7:37with you as a creator or an artist,
- 7:39you are facing life.
- 7:41Whenever you create, you are facing
- 7:43some of the deeper truths and paradoxes of life.
- 7:46So when you are facing the fact
- 7:48that the poem didn't come out exactly as you had it
- 7:50in your mind, you are experiencing,
- 7:52remember that quote from Sad Guru
- 7:54from a few Soul Sessions ago?
- 7:56In this moment, there is all of life.
- 8:00So if you really sit with this disappointment you feel
- 8:03in the work and you understand that you had a vision,
- 8:06you brought it to life, it's not quite as you imagined.
- 8:08That is all of life.
- 8:10That is the relationship we imagine being in,
- 8:12but then we try to actually experience relationships
- 8:15and we're so disappointed.
- 8:16Or that is the vision of something that we had
- 8:19that doesn't always perfectly come to life.
- 8:21If we can sit with that and say,
- 8:23I'm still worthy of creating.
- 8:24I'm still worthy of relating.
- 8:26I'm still worthy of experiencing things
- 8:28that I want to experience.
- 8:30Even if I can't live up to this perfect imagination
- 8:33in my head and just like our sensitivity
- 8:36and how we need to let our sensitivity guide our art
- 8:39rather than stop us from making art at all.
- 8:42I have a Soul Session on this.
- 8:43And at the same time, our imaginations are just the same.
- 8:47So while we may imagine an amazing vision,
- 8:50don't let the perfection of the vision stop you
- 8:52from trying to create at least something in the real world
- 8:54because what is the difference between the vision
- 8:56and the real world?
- 8:57What is the key difference?
- 9:00The key difference, they all exist in the universe,
- 9:02they're all divine, they're all magical
- 9:04and not all visions have to be brought to life.
- 9:06But the difference is if you allow yourself
- 9:09to create what you see,
- 9:11other people get to experience it with you.
- 9:14When we allow the vision to exist
- 9:16imperfectly in the real world,
- 9:18then other people get to partake in our consciousness,
- 9:21in our understanding, in our perspective.
- 9:24And that is such a beautiful offering.
- 9:26That is such a beautiful invitation.
- 9:28And so now when I finish an episode,
- 9:30and I'm like, oh no, this is wrong and that is wrong,
- 9:33when the episode is out and I'm a bit nervous
- 9:35because it's just nerve-wracking to share yourself,
- 9:37I'm like, you know what?
- 9:38I honor that I gave, I gave of myself, I offered myself,
- 9:42I offered my perspective and it's not on me
- 9:44to decide how that's going to be received.
- 9:47So the idea that I want to make sure really comes across
- 9:50is that our creativity is a realm of reality
- 9:54that allows us to be in deeper touch
- 9:55with certain truths of existence.
- 9:57And that is that there is no perfection,
- 10:00there is no completion.
- 10:02Nothing can ever really be, I'm sure your favorite book,
- 10:04the author's like, oh, but chapter 17,
- 10:06had I just had that plot twist this way.
- 10:09But thank goodness they just allowed the book to exist
- 10:11because it influenced you so much.
- 10:13I'm sure your favorite movie, the director or the editor
- 10:17or the costume designer was like, you know what?
- 10:18Like, I could have done this or that differently.
- 10:21So what we need to accept is that it's okay
- 10:23to make things that feel incomplete.
- 10:26It's okay to make things where we feel like,
- 10:28oh, I could have edited line 17,
- 10:30I could have changed frame eight, it's okay.
- 10:32Give yourself permission.
- 10:34If you're someone stuck in research mode,
- 10:35you research, you research, you research, you research,
- 10:38or you're someone stuck in editing mode, you edit,
- 10:40you edit, you edit, you edit, you save to draft.
- 10:42Oh, I do that all the time.
- 10:44Let yourself share something that you to yourself
- 10:47believe isn't finished and see the power of that
- 10:49and also see how it's received differently than that
- 10:52because for you, you live with the idea.
- 10:54So to you, it's not finished.
- 10:55To someone else, they feel invited into your perspective
- 10:58on that idea for the first time.
- 11:00They feel invited also to dance with their own perspective.
- 11:03Maybe you say the exact thing,
- 11:04they've been thinking for a long time
- 11:05but haven't had the language for.
- 11:08So I really just wanna affirm in each of us
- 11:10that we deserve to make things as they are
- 11:13as they can be and accept.
- 11:14Yes, there were more words that we could have said.
- 11:17Yes, there was better editing that we could have had,
- 11:19quote unquote, better, right, or more editing.
- 11:22Yes, we could have researched more for the episode.
- 11:24That's always gonna be true.
- 11:25And especially in the information age babes,
- 11:27there's always gonna be more research you can do.
- 11:30So that is absolutely true.
- 11:31And also I'm worthy of creating.
- 11:34As I am now, in my consciousness now,
- 11:36not delayed, not after I read that book, not after I,
- 11:39no, that is beautiful.
- 11:41It's a beautiful act to once you receive more information,
- 11:43I understand that and I'm not denying that need at all.
- 11:46But I am saying that sometimes we mask the fact
- 11:50that we're using all of this planning and editing
- 11:52to mask over the fact that we don't feel worthy,
- 11:55we don't feel good enough.
- 11:57So we say, okay, cool, if I just edit this more,
- 11:58then I'll be deserving of having a piece
- 12:01that I finish and that I share.
- 12:03But actually you're already deserving.
- 12:04You could go to all your drafts now.
- 12:06And especially for short form, for example, TikToks,
- 12:09I bet if you posted all your drafts,
- 12:11one of them would really resonate with someone,
- 12:13or any of them could resonate with people,
- 12:16not to put the emphasis on virality,
- 12:18but more the idea that like our work is resonant,
- 12:21even when we feel it's unfinished.
- 12:24So I wanna invite you to ask yourself,
- 12:25in what way are you hiding from this deep truth
- 12:28and uncomfortable truth that nothing is ever truly finished?
- 12:32You know what I mean?
- 12:33In the sense of nothing more could be done to it.
- 12:35Because we live in a world of infinite possibility,
- 12:38because we live in a world of infinite information now,
- 12:41because we live in a world of just infinite changes
- 12:44you could make, you could change any single word,
- 12:46you could change the structure of the sentence,
- 12:47you could change this last line to the first line.
- 12:50So in what way are you actually silencing yourself
- 12:53by not allowing yourself to accept
- 12:55that you are worthy of making things
- 12:58even if they feel unfinished to you?
- 13:01Just as we are worthy of being in imperfect friendships,
- 13:04imperfect relationships, by that I mean
- 13:06that perfection itself, completion itself,
- 13:09saying everything you need to say,
- 13:10having the fullest closure possible.
- 13:12It's often really an illusion.
- 13:14It's a fantasy, you know what I mean?
- 13:15Because even if you had said those words,
- 13:17I promise you probably would feel they were more to say, right?
- 13:21And so I think it's important to invite yourself to say,
- 13:23what am I not allowing myself to create
- 13:26or accept in my life because of this illusion of completion
- 13:30and perfection that I'm hanging onto?
- 13:32And what would I rather cling to instead?
- 13:34So for me, I'd rather cling to the notion
- 13:37that there's no point in me having these ideas
- 13:40and actually let me read you the exact words I wrote down
- 13:43because I think they're actually very powerful.
- 13:45Okay, this is the exact word for word.
- 13:46I will screenshot it from my notion document.
- 13:49The topic is called, what's the point of dying
- 13:52with all your ideas?
- 13:57Let that sit in the salsalon.
- 13:58And then the description says,
- 14:00I could either execute on an imperfect version of my ideas
- 14:05or die only with my illusion of having the potential
- 14:08to complete an idea perfectly.
- 14:10So I think that's so important.
- 14:12I could either execute on the imperfect version of my ideas
- 14:17or die only with the illusion of the idea
- 14:19that I had the capacity to create the perfect version.
- 14:23I think that is literally like,
- 14:24Dion, like, damn, that is so profound.
- 14:27Like, I'm just like, that's so cool.
- 14:28It's so true.
- 14:30When we are facing ourselves and just creating
- 14:33or sharing or doing imperfectly,
- 14:35we get to face this truth of like, damn, there's this chasm,
- 14:38there's this gap, there's this void
- 14:41between what I feel capable of making and what I made.
- 14:44That's hard, but let's talk about a void.
- 14:47It's very powerful.
- 14:48If we sit in the void and we say,
- 14:50this void is also me.
- 14:51This void is also part of the human experience.
- 14:54You can't have a universe without holes and voids
- 14:57and spaces between things without gaps.
- 15:01It's part of nature.
- 15:03So yes, I also deserve to live through with,
- 15:05create through with, be through with the gap.
- 15:09So what are you stopping yourself from allowing yourself
- 15:13to create imperfectly?
- 15:15And accepting will never be fully finished.
- 15:17What are the ideas you would rather work on imperfectly
- 15:21and share imperfectly if you feel caught to?
- 15:23Then keep the illusion that you actually can
- 15:26and will make it perfectly.
- 15:30I love you so dearly and no matter what,
- 15:32no matter what you choose to do,
- 15:33you are so infinitely divine and worthy and magical.
- 15:37You have absolutely nothing to prove even to yourself.
- 15:40Even though we are creative beings,
- 15:42we always are kind of striving towards
- 15:44creating things that don't yet exist
- 15:46whether that's community, art, friendship,
- 15:49different ways of relating to people
- 15:51who are already our friends,
- 15:52different relationship structures
- 15:54and then also videos, essays, poems, books, movies,
- 15:57worlds, whatever we want to create.
- 15:59We also are not that creation.
- 16:02And even as many of us,
- 16:04I have so many ideas that it's not actually possible
- 16:06for me to complete all of them in a lifetime.
- 16:09I do want to do as many of them as I decide to give my love to,
- 16:12but I've accepted there are certain things
- 16:14where I'm like, ooh, that idea is flirting with me,
- 16:16but I'm gonna let it go.
- 16:17I'm gonna let it be for someone else.
- 16:19And what's beautiful is because we are the collective,
- 16:20I know that that idea is resonant to someone else.
- 16:23I know that that idea is talking to someone else
- 16:26through the energy of desire and intrigue
- 16:28that it is caring for them
- 16:30and maybe their desire, their intrigue,
- 16:32their energetic pull to that idea is much stronger than mine
- 16:36and therefore they will actually create it.
- 16:38And I think that's really wonderful as well.
- 16:39To step out and say, do I need to be the one
- 16:42to make this idea or do I just want
- 16:43the benefit of having the idea to be made?
- 16:47Okay.
- 16:48So why I say that you are infinitely worthy and divine
- 16:51is often we then use this creative drive
- 16:54as a way to kind of escape the fact
- 16:56that we don't feel worthy when we're not accomplishing things,
- 16:59when we're not achieving the things we said we wanted to achieve
- 17:01or we had visions to achieve.
- 17:03What we feel called to create our creativity,
- 17:06it's always going to be polluted by and affected
- 17:08by this capitalist and elitist
- 17:10and hierarchical society that we live in.
- 17:13So we have to be very careful as we do this dance
- 17:16between our creativity and between the structures
- 17:18that want to constrain it.
- 17:19So for me, if I'm honoring my consciousness
- 17:21and I'm honoring my truth, I did what I came here to do.
- 17:23If I'm speaking from love, if I'm speaking words
- 17:26that have held me, literally I am aligned.
- 17:30I did it.
- 17:30You know what I mean?
- 17:31It's not about numbers.
- 17:32Of course that's part of the world that I create art in
- 17:35but I have to detach from that
- 17:36because I won't be able to stay in the spiritual realm
- 17:39that I'm trying to exist in.
- 17:41If I let it overly be determined by the algorithms,
- 17:44the technology, that's just a vessel.
- 17:46It's a portal through which I get to share experience
- 17:51and be experienced.
- 17:52But if I make the portal my identity,
- 17:54it leads to a very dark place or a very unsolvable place.
- 17:58And here in the soul salon, we want to stay solvable.
- 18:01And we don't want to let these big tech companies define us,
- 18:05you know, define our worth, define our creativity.
- 18:07Oh, she's a good creator because these are how many followers
- 18:10she has.
- 18:11No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 18:12We literally can't be measured.
- 18:13That's the irony, the paradox.
- 18:15I wanted to keep these episodes a bit short to these days
- 18:18so I'm going to leave it here with you.
- 18:19I hope you feel cold to allow something
- 18:22that you previously thought was unfinished, to be finished
- 18:25and face that life is always unfinished.
- 18:28We sometimes try to make life something that can be completed
- 18:32and I just think it's uncompletable.
- 18:34It's not even meant to be completed.
- 18:35We're like a blip in this universal spectrum and experience
- 18:38and it's wonderful that we get to experience it
- 18:40but similarly to the wisdom of uncertainty,
- 18:42there's also wisdom in seeing life as a kind of always evolving
- 18:47and never fully complete aspect.
- 18:48Because even after we die, are we complete
- 18:51when our energy still exists in other people?
- 18:53You know what I mean?
- 18:54So when there are people whose energy exists within us
- 18:56that we don't even know, like ancestry,
- 18:58but also just like as a collective,
- 19:00we're affected by people in ways we don't even understand.
- 19:02So anyways, let me not keep going because you know,
- 19:05I could keep going.
- 19:06I hope you enjoyed today's sole session.
- 19:09I hope you experience yourself as magic.
- 19:11I hope you look for the mirrors in the universe
- 19:13in your community that reflect that love
- 19:16and magic back into you because those mirrors exist.
- 19:19They exist in friends that you have yet to meet.
- 19:21They exist in love as you've met to love.
- 19:23They exist in music. They exist in podcasts.
- 19:25Are we attuned? Are we aware?
- 19:26Are we seeing the possibility?
- 19:28Okay, I love you so much
- 19:30and I hope that you create magic and share it with the world
- 19:33even if it doesn't feel fully complete to you.
- 19:36Remembering that we create also four through and with each other.
- 19:40I love you so dearly.
- 19:41I will see you on next week's sole session.
- 19:44I hope you have a wonderful day.
- 19:46Bye.
- 19:47I hope some paradigms have been shifted
- 19:48for you in today's conversation.
