- 0:47Week three, the 2026 NFL season saw some amazing upsets and some fantastic feats of great players doing great things.
- 0:54We have these and more coming up with Ed CLE as we do a recap of the history made in week three.
- 1:04K check.
- 1:07Happy Wednesday morning, everybody.
- 1:09Just like we do every week in the NFL season, we are going to recap the history of.
- 1:13Of the week before.
- 1:14This week is week three of the 2026 NFL season, and I am joined as always by Ed Cleese.
- 1:20Ed, welcome back to the Pig pen.
- 1:21Hey, Darren, how are you today?
- 1:22I'm doing great, Ed, and what a great weekend of football that we just witnessed.
- 1:27It was.
- 1:27It was finally a great weekend of football.
- 1:31Yeah, it was great for you and I personally.
- 1:34Maybe not for our records that we did on our predictions and things like that from last week, but I guess we'll find out about that in a later episode.
- 1:43Yes, we'll put that off till tomorrow.
- 1:45Yeah, that's right.
- 1:46That's right.
- 1:47So, Ed, what was your.
- 1:48Your findings on the week?
- 1:49What.
- 1:49What are your feelings?
- 1:50Sure.
- 1:50Well, we'll start.
- 1:51We'll start with Thursday and just a.
- 1:53A shockingly miserable performance by the Packers.
- 1:57I would say that's about as bad as it gets.
- 1:59And we have to go back 22 years, Darren, to find a Packers primetime home loss that was as bad as what we saw.
- 2:08They lost by 21 the other night.
- 2:10They also lost by 21 in 2004 at home against the Titans.
- 2:15They lost that game 48 to 27.
- 2:18That is 22 years ago.
- 2:20So that was a pretty rare, terrible primetime performance at home by the Packers.
- 2:28Yeah, it was kind of a miserable thing if you're up in Green Bay and rooting for the green and yellow there.
- 2:34So.
- 2:34Yeah, that's for sure.
- 2:35So what else did you find out?
- 2:37Sure.
- 2:37Well, we've got two AFC playoff teams that from last year that are now 03.
- 2:43The Texans and the Chargers.
- 2:46Now, ironically, there's been seven teams in history, Darren, that have wound up making the playoffs at 03.
- 2:54Somewhat.
- 2:54Ironically, the two most recent are the Texans.
- 2:58Last year, you might remember that they went 03 and made the playoffs.
- 3:02They also did that in 2018.
- 3:05They.
- 3:05They went 03 and made the playoffs.
- 3:07And then even more ironically, the only team in history, a somewhat famous team, only one team in history has ever gone oh and four to make the playoffs, which was the Chargers.
- 3:20Believe it or not, in 1992, the Chargers started 0 and 4 and I think they wound up 11 and 5.
- 3:27I think they ended the season with 11 out of 12 after that to make the playoffs.
- 3:32So two teams that are 0 and 3 are the only, you know, got a little history on their side, but they're going to have to do some hustling.
- 3:39Yeah.
- 3:40While you're talking about the Chargers, they made some history some more.
- 3:44In a bad way, I guess I could say.
- 3:46Now the Chargers have lost three games, which they won the turnover battle by at least plus four, while the rest of the league in that same span has only had it happen twice.
- 3:58The Chargers trifecta that they've had is is this past week's loss to Buffalo, 2015 season finale collapse against the Denver Broncos, and back in a 27 nothing lead in the playoffs against Jacksonville in 2022.
- 4:13Not too many teams have done it and the Charger have done it more than the whole rest of the league combined in that same time frame.
- 4:18Wow.
- 4:19Speaking of turnovers, last Sunday The Washington was plus 3 over Seattle in the turnover margin.
- 4:27But more Importantly, they scored 20 points off of those three turnovers.
- 4:32That is the most points that the Washington franchise has scored off of turnover, turnover, turnovers in a game in 21 years.
- 4:40The finale of the 2005 season was the last time they did it in Philadelphia.
- 4:45It was a game that they clinched the playoffs in.
- 4:48Very famous still photo of Sean Taylor jumping over the end zone to sort of clinch the game, to put it out of reach on a scoop and score, which put them over the top in that game, got them
- 5:00in the playoffs since the last time Washington has scored that many points off turnovers in a game.
- 5:05And part of those two of those turnovers was your rookie linebacker Sonny Stiles, who sort of did something no rookie linebacker has been part of an interception and a forced fumble in the Same game since November 18, 2018
- 5:23when the Colts Shaquille Leonard did it back.
- 5:25Wow.
- 5:25So, so that's pretty good feat in the last eight years.
- 5:28So he, he has been everywhere so far going to Cleveland.
- 5:33Darren, normally I wouldn't put out something this kind of obscure, but because it's the Browns, I think we need to mention it.
- 5:39The Browns actually now have a three game winning streak against the Panthers.
- 5:44There aren't going to be too many teams in recent history where they can say that against.
- 5:49They haven't lost at home to the Panthers since 2002.
- 5:54So the Browns like to see Carolina coming to Cleveland.
- 5:59Well, I think they like seeing that whole NFC south coming to Cleveland because with these last two weeks, with their wins over the Bucks, wins over the Panthers, Cleveland finally has a winning record against one of the divisions
- 6:13in the NFL.
- 6:14They are 14 and 13 against that division with those two wins the last two weeks and not a winning record against any other division.
- 6:21That's the.
- 6:22Cleveland can also be proud.
- 6:24You know, they might not like their quarterback, but he had the longest air pass of anybody in the NFL last week, 62.6 yards for DeSean Watson on that touchdown pass that he threw against the Panthers.
- 6:39Got it.
- 6:39Well, good for him and good for the Browns fans for sure.
- 6:42Staying in your division, in the.
- 6:44And talking about your team a little bit.
- 6:46You know, we, we touched, we briefed on it.
- 6:48We briefly touched on it last week about how terrible the Steelers offense has been.
- 6:54But I guess the Bengals might be the elixir for the Steelers offensive woes because that is now the sixth time in the last eight games that the Steelers have scored at least 30 on the Bengals.
- 7:07Yeah.
- 7:07And it's not because of a bad Bengals defense like it has been in years past.
- 7:12You know, there's a lot of elements that went in there.
- 7:15I think making things a little easier by Mike McCarthy for his offense and changing a couple offensive linemen sort of gave Aaron Rodgers some more time and just looked like old Aaron.
- 7:25Okay, staying in the afc, we're gonna talk about the Chiefs, who have now won six straight against the Dolphins.
- 7:32Got a little trivia question for you here.
- 7:34The Dolphin, I'm sorry, the Chiefs last loss to the Dolphins in 2011.
- 7:40Do you have any idea there were three quarterbacks that started for the Chiefs in 2011.
- 7:46Can you name any of them?
- 7:49Oh, for the Chiefs, I'll say maybe Trent Green is one of them.
- 7:53Nope.
- 7:54No.
- 7:55Okay.
- 7:58Well, it's way after Montana was playing there.
- 8:01I'm drawing sort of a blank on there.
- 8:03All right.
- 8:04It was Matt Castle, Tyler Palko and Kyle Orton.
- 8:09So.
- 8:09And then they had a pretty bad year that year under Todd Haley.
- 8:15And then the next year was the Romeo Cornell year and then the year right after that, Andy Reid arrived.
- 8:20So things turned for them really in 2013.
- 8:26But if we go back to 2011, the Chiefs were actually in a really miserable, miserable place.
- 8:33You know, and I feel bad because I officiated Tyler Palko's last high school game as a state championship game.
- 8:39And I should know that.
- 8:41Got it.
- 8:42Well, another thing you should know is that whenever the Texans play in Indianapolis, you should watch it because 11 of the last 13 times those teams have played in Indy, it has been a one score game and Houston
- 8:55had won the last four of those.
- 8:58They not.
- 8:58And if you might remember, in 2023, I believe was the last game of the year when they beat the Colts to make the playoffs.
- 9:05So those two teams have had a lot of good games over the years in Indy and Sunday was no exception.
- 9:10Yeah, and I don't think many were expecting that to be that game that we came out that way.
- 9:16But the Colts definitely look good and Houston might be in a little bit of trouble.
- 9:20Yeah, that for sure.
- 9:22Going Back to the 0 and 3 thing we talked about.
- 9:24Talk about trouble.
- 9:26I cannot believe that the Dallas Cowboys did not learn from history because one of the most famous sort of plays moments in recent NFL history is the 13 second game.
- 9:38Buffalo and Kansas City.
- 9:40Correct.
- 9:40Everybody knows what we're talking.
- 9:42All you have to say is 13 seconds.
- 9:43We know what you're talking about.
- 9:44And Darren, we.
- 9:45What was the Bill's biggest mistake in that whole stanza in Kansas City that day?
- 9:50What was the one thing that they really screwed up doing?
- 9:54Time management.
- 9:55Well, time management, but specifically they, they kicked the ball for a touchback which brings no time off the clock.
- 10:04There is this paranoia amongst NFL coaches.
- 10:08It seems that if we, if we allow a return, maybe it'll be a big busted return.
- 10:12We'll give up a touchdown or they'll get it into field goal range on the return.
- 10:16That is a baseless fear.
- 10:18That is a very.
- 10:20That's so much less likely to happen than Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson making a play.
- 10:26Especially when you give the other team the ball at the 35 yard line because you don't need that much yardage now to get into with, with these kickers.
- 10:37So they.
- 10:38The biggest.
- 10:38The Cowboys made a ton of mistakes at the end of that game.
- 10:42The biggest one is kicking the ball in the end zone on purpose for a touchback where no time comes off the clock.
- 10:48They did not learn a lesson from one of the biggest mistakes we've had in recent history.
- 10:53Yeah, that's very true.
- 10:54It could have changed the whole complexion of that game.
- 10:57And as you can tell, I'm very excited to point that out.
- 11:00The Cowboys making a massive, massive mistake.
- 11:02At the end of the game.
- 11:03Game.
- 11:04Denver made a little bit of history.
- 11:06As many.
- 11:07You know, Denver's pretty famous for having a lot of comebacks.
- 11:09Right.
- 11:09Especially with la.
- 11:11Did you know Darren, though, that's actually the first time that Denver's ever had back to back games where they overcame double digit deficits in the second half to win.
- 11:22Really?
- 11:22Okay.
- 11:23Yes.
- 11:23Yep, first time.
- 11:24And if we want to get really specific, they are the first team in back to back seasons, to ever have a game where they were shut out in the first half, losing by more than 13, and then came
- 11:38back to win and scored 30 or more points.
- 11:43Last year they did it against the Giants.
- 11:44They were, they were shut out in the first half.
- 11:46And last year the Broncos scored 33 points in the fourth quarter against the Giants.
- 11:51Sean Payton must have an amazing halftime speech and halftime adjustments, that's for sure.
- 11:56He must, he must, he must.
- 11:58And then ending on sort of a sour note.
- 12:00Baker Mayfield has been in the NFL for eight seasons now.
- 12:05I'm eliminating the one year he didn't play much.
- 12:07The 27 QBR he's got right now is by far the lowest of his career.
- 12:12So things have gone way south in Tampa for Baker and the Bucs.
- 12:18Yeah, they're another team that might be in a little bit of trouble here coming in week four.
- 12:23So maybe some of these teams will rebound on that.
- 12:28Is that, that all your games?
- 12:29My news and notes.
- 12:30I won't rush into Scoragami yet.
- 12:32Okay, well, I got, I got a few things that made history here.
- 12:36I want to talk about the Raiders and the Saints game.
- 12:38You know, these are two teams that I don't think many were expecting to do much this year.
- 12:42And so far in the, the first three games of the season, these two teams look like they might be contenders.
- 12:48Might be pretty good to go somewhere and maybe make a playoff run here.
- 12:53That game had a, on Sunday between them, had a record, a tied a record in the NFL all time for touchdowns by tight ends, which I found kind of interesting.
- 13:04The Saints had four touchdowns, two from Noah Fant, two from Juwan Johnson, and the Raiders had two, including one from Brock Bauer.
- 13:12So that got them into the history books.
- 13:15Tied to the Lions and the jets was another game that sort of caught my eye.
- 13:21Made a little bit of history.
- 13:23After a three touchdown in the second half performance by Jameer Gibbs, he now has 43 career rushing touchdowns and has officially leapfrogged Billy Sims for second place in franchise history and trails only Barry Sanders who had 99 on
- 13:39his career.
- 13:40So he's got quite a ways to go to catch Barry Sanders, but catching Billy Sims is quite a feat himself.
- 13:47And that, that's what I have so far for the, the history.
- 13:50So I guess it's time to hit some score gummy.
- 13:52Let's hit some score of me, Darren.
- 13:54So we'll start Scoragami.
- 13:56Well, first of all, did we have a scoregasm?
- 13:58No scoregasm, no scoregasm.
- 14:01Okay, no scoregasms.
- 14:02Or score gummies.
- 14:03So, okay, so.
- 14:04So Washington and Pittsburgh's score winning scores were not a score gummy.
- 14:09No, I don't.
- 14:09But I will start with Washington though because their final of 33 to 31 was fairly rare.
- 14:16It's only the 16th time that scores happened in history, that is.
- 14:21But 25 of those are Washington wins.
- 14:25So Washington has won four of the 1633-31 games, which would include a game in 1991 that I attended in Dallas on a Monday night as a, as a youngster.
- 14:38But my question for you is.
- 14:39So I kind of.
- 14:41I'll tell you right now that that is not the answer to the question.
- 14:44So I'm going to make it a little bit easier for you.
- 14:45My question for you is Darren, which score this week was the most rare?
- 14:51And I'm going to give you a hint.
- 14:52You've got double the chances this week because it was a tie.
- 14:57Okay.
- 14:58I think that the rares.
- 14:59Because now you got me thinking about.
- 15:01I'm watching these scores come across the ticker and I'm flicking through the channels and I think that maybe that Denver and LA Rams score, what was it was 30 to 26.
- 15:11That seems kind of rare to me.
- 15:13I don't remember too many having that and I think maybe that might be one of the rares.
- 15:16It's incorrect.
- 15:18You're close.
- 15:19It's only happened 13 times in history.
- 15:22So that was number three on our list.
- 15:25But you did not get either of the top two which have both tied.
- 15:30Both of these have only happened nine times.
- 15:33That would be the 36 to 30 final in San Francisco where the really 49ers beat the Cardinals.
- 15:39Now it's funny, this is the ninth time, Darren, that it's happened 36 to 30, but only the second time that it's happened in regulation.
- 15:48The seven of the other nine 36 to 30 finals were all in overtime and then the other game would be 35 to 6, the Jags over the Patriots.
- 16:02That hadn't happened in.
- 16:04Let's see Here it From 2015 through 2024 it had never did.
- 16:09It hadn't happened.
- 16:11And then in 2025 the Jags beat the Chargers 35 to 6.
- 16:16And now in 2026 the Jags are beating the Patriots 35 to 6.
- 16:21So nine times for each of those.
- 16:23You know, if, even if you would have let me do a second guess, I would have got it wrong because I would have said that Giants game 12 to 7.
- 16:28But I guess I was.
- 16:30Let's see, Giants, the 12 to 7.
- 16:31That actually wasn't quite as rare as you would think because that's happened 25 times.
- 16:36Because, Darren, back in the old days, there was a decent amount of a 12 to 7 type of games for the week.
- 16:44Believe it or not, Darren, week three has now surpassed week one as the most rare score, a ME index score.
- 16:51We have a score for week three of 53.18, which just edges out week one, which is at 53.75.
- 17:01The main reason for that is we didn't have any super, super common scores this week.
- 17:06The only one that was over 100 times was the 24 to 10 Chiefs Dolphins game had happened 140 times.
- 17:13And just for relevance, point, we were like 75 on week two, right?
- 17:17Correct.
- 17:1773.18.
- 17:18So much, much less rare.
- 17:21In week two weeks, weeks one and three, we've been a little more unique.
- 17:25Wow.
- 17:25I wonder maybe if those, those first week one and week three are going to be maybe carrying their way all the way through the season here.
- 17:32We shall see.
- 17:33Sounds kind of rare.
- 17:34Yes, very interesting.
- 17:37That's what I got for you.
- 17:38All right, well, Ed, we really appreciate you digging in and taking a look at this history and, you know, even making these games that we just watched just a few days ago are even part of football history.
- 17:49And, and that's what we like to celebrate here in Pixicand.
- 17:50Dispatch.com Ed, we thank you for celebrating that with us and joining us here.
- 17:54And stay tuned.
- 17:56Tomorrow we will have on our podcast, Pixie and Dispatch, that your favorite podcast provider, Ed and I will go through and make our weekly picks going into the season for week four.
- 18:06So, Ed, thank you for joining us and we will talk to you again real soon.
- 18:09Thanks, Darren.
- 18:09See you later.
