- 0:25Welcome back listeners to Sandman Stories Presents, a
- 0:27folklore podcast where I read you to sleep or until the next
- 0:30story. I'm your host, Dustin.
- 0:33Today we are back in the book of Bengal folklore, written down by
- 0:35Lal Bahari Day. This story is a bit of a sad
- 0:39one, and it features a tiny bit of cannibalism.
- 0:42The king wants a baby and then everything goes sideways.
- 0:46But just remember that they're all mangoes.
- 0:50OK, let's begin. The boy whom 7 mothers suckled.
- 0:57Once Upon a time, there reigned a king who had 7 Queens.
- 1:01It was very sad, for all 7 Queens were barren.
- 1:05A holy medicant, however, told the king that in a certain
- 1:08forest there grew a tree on a branch of which hung 7 mangoes.
- 1:13If the king himself plucked those mangoes and gave one each
- 1:17to all of the Queens, they would all become mothers.
- 1:21So the king went to the forest, plucked the seven mangoes that
- 1:24grew upon one branch, and gave a mango to each of the Queens to
- 1:27eat. In short time the King's heart
- 1:30was filled with joy as he heard that the seven Queens were all
- 1:34with child. One day the king was out hunting
- 1:38when he saw a young lady of peerless beauty crosses path.
- 1:43He fell in love with her, brought her to his palace and
- 1:45married her. This lady was however, not a
- 1:49human being but a Rakshasi. But the king of course did not
- 1:53know it. The king became dotingly fond of
- 1:57her. He did whatever she told him.
- 2:01One day she said to the king, You say that you love me more
- 2:04than anyone else, Let me see whether you really love me.
- 2:08So if you love me, make your seven other Queens blind and let
- 2:14them be killed. The King became very sad at the
- 2:18request of his best beloved queen, even more so as the seven
- 2:22Queens were all with child. But there was nothing for it but
- 2:26to comply with the Rakshasi Queen's request.
- 2:32The eyes of the seven Queens were plucked out of their
- 2:34sockets, and then the Queens themselves were delivered up to
- 2:37the Chief Minister to be destroyed.
- 2:40But the Chief Minister was a merciful man.
- 2:43Instead of killing the seven Queens, he hid them in a cave
- 2:46which was on the other side of a hill.
- 2:49In the course of time, the eldest of the seven Queens gave
- 2:52birth to a child. What shall I do with a child?
- 2:55Said she, Now that we are blind and are dying for want of food,
- 3:00let me kill the child, and let us all eat of his flesh.
- 3:04So saying, she killed the infant, which turned back into a
- 3:06mango, and gave to each of her sisters a part of the fruit to
- 3:09eat. The 6th ate their portion, but
- 3:14the 7th or youngest queen did not eat her share, but laid it
- 3:17beside her. In a few days the second queen
- 3:21also was delivered of a child, and she did with it, as her
- 3:24eldest sister had done with hers.
- 3:27So did the third, the 4th, the 5th, and the 6th queen.
- 3:31At last the 7th queen gave birth to a son, but she, instead of
- 3:35following the example of her sister Queens, resolved to nurse
- 3:38the child. The other Queens demanded their
- 3:41portions of the newly born baby. She gave each of them the
- 3:45portion she had set aside. The other Queens at once
- 3:49perceived that their portions were dry and could not therefore
- 3:52be parts of the child just born. The 7th Queen told them that she
- 3:56had made-up her mind not to kill the child but to nurse it.
- 4:00The others were glad to hear this and they said that they
- 4:02would all help her in nursing the child.
- 4:06So the child was suckled by 7 mothers and it became, after
- 4:09some years, the hardiest and strongest boy that ever lived.
- 4:14In the meantime, the Rakshasi, wife of the King, was doing
- 4:16infinite mischief in the royal household in the capital.
- 4:20What she ate at the royal table did not fill her capacious
- 4:23stomach. Therefore, in the darkness of
- 4:25night she gradually ate up all the members of the royal family,
- 4:28all the King's servants and attendants, all his horses,
- 4:31elephants and cattle, till none remained in the palace, except
- 4:34she herself in a royal consort. After that she used to go out in
- 4:40the evening into the city and eat up a stray human being.
- 4:43Here and there The king was left unattended by servants.
- 4:47There was no person left to cook for him, for no one would take
- 4:50his service. At last the boy, who had been
- 4:54suckled by 7 mothers and who had now grown up to a stalwart
- 4:57youth, volunteered his services. He attended on the King and took
- 5:03every care to prevent the Queen from swallowing him up, for he
- 5:06went away at home long before nightfall, and the Rakshasi
- 5:09Queen never ceased her victims except at night.
- 5:12Hence the Queen was determined in some way to get rid of the
- 5:14boy, as the boy always boasted that he was equal to any work,
- 5:20however hard. The queen told him that she was
- 5:22suffering from some disease. It could only be cured by eating
- 5:25a certain species of melon which was 12 cubits long, but the
- 5:29stone of which was 13 cubits long.
- 5:33That fruit could be had only from her mother, who lived on
- 5:36the other side of the ocean. She gave him a letter of
- 5:39introduction to her mother, in which she requested her to
- 5:42devour the boy the moment he put the letter into her hands.
- 5:46The boy, suspecting foul play, tore up the letter and proceeded
- 5:50on his journey. The dauntless youth passed
- 5:53through many lands and at last stood on the shore of the ocean,
- 5:56on the other side of which was the country of the Rakshasis.
- 6:00He then bowled as loud as he could and said Granny, Granny
- 6:06come and save your daughter, She is dangerously I'll.
- 6:12An old Rakshasi on the other side of the ocean heard the
- 6:14words cross the ocean, came to the boy and on hearing the
- 6:17message took the boy on her back and recrossed the ocean.
- 6:20So the boy was in the country of the Rakshasi's.
- 6:24The 12 cubit melon with its 13 cubit stone was given to the boy
- 6:28at once and he was told to perform the journey back.
- 6:31But the boy pleaded fatigue and beg to be allowed to rest one
- 6:34day. To this the old Rakshasi
- 6:37consented, observing a stout club and a rope hanging on the
- 6:41Rakshasi's room. The boy inquired what they were
- 6:44there for. She replied, Child, by that club
- 6:48and rope I cross the ocean. If anyone takes a club and the
- 6:53rope in his hands and addresses them with the following magical
- 6:55words, O stout club, O strong rope, take me at once to the
- 7:00other side, then immediately the club and rope will take him to
- 7:05the other side of the ocean. Observing a bird in a cage
- 7:09hanging in one corner of the room, the boy inquired what it
- 7:12was. The old Rakshasi replied It
- 7:16contains a secret child which must not be disclosed to
- 7:19mortals, and yet how can I hide it from my own grandchild?
- 7:23That bird child contains the life of your mother.
- 7:26If the bird is killed, your mother will die at once.
- 7:30Armed with these secrets, the boy went to bed that night.
- 7:35The next morning the old Rakshasi, together with all the
- 7:38other Rakshasis, went to distant countries to forage.
- 7:42The boy took down the cage from the ceiling as well as the club
- 7:45and the rope. Having secured the bird, he
- 7:48addressed the club and rope. Thus, O stout club, O strong
- 7:52rope, take me at once to the other side.
- 7:55In the twinkling of an eye the boy was put on this side of the
- 7:58ocean. He then retraced his steps, came
- 8:01to the Queen, and gave to her, to her astonishment, the 12
- 8:05cubit melon with its 13 cubit stone, but the cage with the
- 8:09bird in it he kept carefully concealed.
- 8:13In the course of time the people of the city came to the king and
- 8:16said, A monstrous bird comes out, apparently from the palace
- 8:19every evening, and seizes the passengers in the streets and
- 8:22swallows them up. This has been going on for so
- 8:26long a time that the city has almost become desolate.
- 8:31The king could not make out what this monstrous bird was.
- 8:34The King's servant, the boy, replied that he knew the
- 8:36monstrous bird and that he would kill it, providing the queen
- 8:39stood beside the king. By royal command the queen was
- 8:44made to stand by the king. Then the boy took the bird from
- 8:47the cage which he had brought from the other side of the
- 8:49ocean, On seeing which she fell into a fainting fit.
- 8:55Turning to the king, the boy said, Sire, you will soon
- 8:58perceive who the monstrous bird is that devours your subjects.
- 9:01Every evening, as I tear off each limb from this bird, the
- 9:05corresponding limb of the man devourer will fall off.
- 9:09The boy then tore off one leg of the bird in his hand.
- 9:13Immediately, to the astonishment of the whole assembly, for the
- 9:16citizens were all present, One of the legs of the queen fell
- 9:19off, and when the boy squeezed the throat of the bird, the
- 9:23queen gave up the ghost. The boy then related his own
- 9:28story and that of his mother and stepmothers.
- 9:31The seven Queens whose eyesight was miraculously restored were
- 9:35brought back to the palace, and the boy that was suckled by 7
- 9:38mothers was recognized by the king as his rightful heir.
- 9:43So they live together happily. Thus my story endeth the Nadia
- 9:48thorn withereth, et cetera. The end
- 10:18that story, wow. It was fun but the original had
- 10:21them eating baby meat and that was a bit much for me.
- 10:25Perhaps on a Sandman After Dark episode.
- 10:27I have half a plan to make the folklore stories that are too
- 10:29gruesome or sexual for the regular feed into a different
- 10:32show. I love the relation to the
- 10:34Indian and Turkish stories plus the Rakshasi's.
- 10:37All in all it's just a fun story and the podcast shout out is
- 10:41too. Verbal diorama hosted by Em.
- 10:44The show goes behind the scenes and tells you all about how a
- 10:47movie gets made. She gives you the inspiration
- 10:50and the path the movie takes until it gets made.
- 10:52It's a wonderful podcast, I suggest listening to the episode
- 10:55all about Wally and if you like her show as much as I do, give
- 10:59her a like a rating and a review.
- 11:03And the listener shout out is to Male the capital of the
- 11:06Maldives. It is one of the most densely
- 11:08packed cities in the world. There are over 200,000 people
- 11:12living in just over 8 square miles.
- 11:15It is a cool mix of Dravidian people who migrated to the
- 11:18islands from South India and Sri Lanka.
- 11:20And there's also an Arab influence, which can be seen in
- 11:22the writing system and some of the vocabulary.
- 11:26What I like to visit. Oh, heck yeah.
- 11:28And so to my listener in the Maldives, I say Shukoriya, Adi,
- 11:33hail regande. Thank you and good night.
