- 0:10Some old friends facing our fears, laughing through the
- 0:13chaos and drinking some beers. So here's to the laughs, the
- 0:16crumbs and the cheers. All the awkward moments.
- 0:19And we're still here. Because in the end, we're just
- 0:22doing our thing. It's our crazy life. 01 more
- 0:25thing one. More thing.
- 0:32Welcome to Oh and one more thing, a podcast where 2 long
- 0:35time friends try to figure out what the heck is going on with
- 0:38this crazy thing called middle age.
- 0:39It's a mix of stories of how we navigate our lives and maybe
- 0:42some questionable advice. Some days we're wise, other days
- 0:45we're just trying to remember where the heck we left our
- 0:47phone. So join us as we laugh, groan,
- 0:50and maybe even learn a little something about surviving in the
- 0:52second-half of life. Oh, and one more thing.
- 1:05Hello, I'm Brian and welcome to. Oh, and one more thing.
- 1:09Hey, I'm Rob. Hey everybody.
- 1:11So this tonight we're recording. This is a little different for
- 1:14us. It is different and I'm kind of
- 1:16excited because normally we record these on at some random
- 1:18night during the week, but this one we're doing on a Saturday
- 1:21night. And I have a beer.
- 1:23I have AI, have AI have a not a beer.
- 1:25I have a carbless this evening so hopefully a little more
- 1:29loosey goosey tonight than we normally do.
- 1:31I've never loosey goosey but kind of exciting because why are
- 1:35we doing this on a Saturday night?
- 1:36Brian, what's, what's your wife got going on tonight?
- 1:38She is going to the opera. Yeah, it was a birthday gift
- 1:41from two of her daughters, right?
- 1:44That sounds wicked boring to me, no?
- 1:47It would be, I'm sure. It's very fun and exciting.
- 1:49Yeah, I'm sure it is. I'm not sure they're having a
- 1:50great time. So.
- 1:51So what's the good word? My friend, you know, it's
- 1:53getting really nice outside. It's lake time and cabin time.
- 1:57You got your boat out. Yeah, we did.
- 1:59Yeah. It's a Memorial Day, a weekend
- 2:01as yes, that's when usually in Minnesota, that's when we tend
- 2:04to drop boat in the water if you're not a Fisher person,
- 2:06which I'm not. I'm not a Fisher person.
- 2:09Either it's not my thing. We just like to go out and hang
- 2:11on the water and drink and listen to tunes and just kind of
- 2:13chill out for a day. Yeah.
- 2:14So about four years ago we bought a a new pontoon, a Sea
- 2:18Doo switch. Yeah, which which tell me about
- 2:20that. I've seen and you've been on it.
- 2:22I've. Been on it, but it's different
- 2:23than your regular pontoons that we're all familiar with.
- 2:26It is, and it's it's quite fun. So it's it's a, it's a Sea Doo.
- 2:30So it's a, the hall of it is actually a Sea Doo jet ski hall.
- 2:33It's a jet ski motor in there. Yeah.
- 2:35And they basically attach a pontoon to it when they first
- 2:37came out about four years ago. I mean, we had it on the lake.
- 2:39And I mean, people just, I mean, I, I can't tell you how many
- 2:42people came up to us. We're just fascinated with it
- 2:45and I and it's and super fun. We can do lots of fun things
- 2:48with it. We told the girls behind and
- 2:49they wake board and we too behind it.
- 2:52All the fun things all. The fun things, it's not quite a
- 2:54jet ski. I think that's a misconception.
- 2:56When people see it or they buy it initially, like, oh, I'm just
- 2:58going to get a really fast jet ski.
- 3:00No, it's still a pontoon people. It's it's meant to cruise and
- 3:03that kind of thing, but you can still have some fun with it.
- 3:05But so it's been pretty fun, but and what we have not done yet is
- 3:08we have not brought it up to your cabin.
- 3:11You have not. We're going to get that on the
- 3:13agenda. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 3:15But you guys were up there recently, right?
- 3:17Yeah, so we were up there over Memorial weekend.
- 3:19I mean, it was really nice being there again.
- 3:21I haven't been there all winter and, and, but the water's still
- 3:24a little cold. We had a great time hanging out
- 3:26on the deck, having campfires, and even though it's fun this
- 3:31time of year, it's also the time of year that the creepy crawly
- 3:35things start coming out out of the woodwork.
- 3:36Does that creep you out like spiders, snakes, things like
- 3:38that? So yes and no.
- 3:41I mean, like, I don't creep, get creeped out about like spiders
- 3:44in the house, like, you know, go smash a spider and right, get
- 3:46rid of that kind of thing. What does kind of freak me out a
- 3:49little bit is when I'm walking through the yard and a Garter
- 3:51snake comes Slytherin by it more just startles me.
- 3:53I know the shirtless. Yeah, they're not gonna jump and
- 3:55attack. I I get it.
- 3:56I mean, I played with him as a kid, but.
- 3:58But they will bite you. Yeah.
- 4:00It doesn't leave a no, I mean a mark.
- 4:02They're totally harmless and I think we have a little nest kind
- 4:05of in our house by our garage because we've seen them slither
- 4:08down between the pavement and disappear.
- 4:10So I'm sure there's some huge nest with like 80,000 snakes
- 4:12under there. Yeah.
- 4:13But yeah, so it's a yeah. Startled, yes.
- 4:16I mean, freaked out her. A fear?
- 4:18Probably not, but yes, a little freaked out.
- 4:20So it really creeps out my my daughters and and my wife to see
- 4:24these things. And, you know, for me, not so
- 4:26much unless, you know, they don't really bother me.
- 4:29I mean, I can, I obviously have to go kill a spider, right and
- 4:32everything, but unless one crawls over the top of my foot,
- 4:35then I'm like, oh, Oh my gosh. Gross.
- 4:38Yeah, that'll do. It kind of freaks you out.
- 4:40Did I ever tell you about the King Scorpion?
- 4:43No. What's that?
- 4:44OK, so at a former employer, an annual that I do graphics work
- 4:49we're working on this is quite a few years ago when the Mummy
- 4:53Returns DVD came out and we're selling that on the ad.
- 4:57And I got this great idea is like, could we get a king
- 5:01scorpion? Because I knew, you know, in the
- 5:02beginning of the movie, The the Rock, what whatever his mummy
- 5:06name was in the movie, he eats one.
- 5:09OK. Right.
- 5:10And I'm like, could we get a King Scorpion to photograph with
- 5:13the DVD for the cover of the ad? And we're like, yeah, we can do
- 5:17that. So that's so cool because we got
- 5:20a a king scorpion and we were able to photograph it with some
- 5:23sand in the DVD and it was really cool.
- 5:25But the cool part of that was the fact that after we are done
- 5:30with the the photo shoot, I got to hold the king Scorpion in my
- 5:33hand and he crawled on my hand, you know, and those things are
- 5:37they're both the size of, of a small fist, you know, they're
- 5:41pretty large. And you think, Oh my gosh, if it
- 5:44stings me, well, it's they're the least venomous of the
- 5:48scorpion family. And it's just like a bee sting,
- 5:51OK? And since I'm not allergic to
- 5:52bees. No big deal, no big deal.
- 5:54Yeah, so then it was like, hey, let's get crazy at this.
- 5:57And we put him on my shirt and he crawled up my chest towards
- 6:02my face, and we got a photograph, but I can't find it
- 6:04anywhere of me looking down at it, you know, and it's crawling
- 6:09right at my face. Amazing.
- 6:11I thought that was a cool experience.
- 6:13That's kind of cool, yeah. Yeah.
- 6:14So that we thought that would be a great topic for today.
- 6:17Yeah, phobias and fears. So while many people have of
- 6:22know about the common phobias like arachnophobia, right, fear
- 6:25of spiders, we just talked a little about that acrophobia,
- 6:29the fear of hemophobia or hematomophobia, which is fear of
- 6:34blood, which makes sense, OK. Makes sense, yeah.
- 6:36Claustrophobia, the fear of, you know, closed in spaces.
- 6:40But there are also so many more lesser known and very specific
- 6:45phobias that you're probably not aware of.
- 6:47OK. And I found a few to talk about.
- 6:48OK. Cool, that sounds fun.
- 6:50First of all, what are phobias? A specific phobia is a type of
- 6:54anxiety disorder involving an intense fear of an object or
- 6:58situation. The fear becomes a phobia when
- 7:02it's irrational, meaning the anxiety or fear experience
- 7:06experience is disproportionate to the actual danger or threat.
- 7:10It lasts at least six months and it significantly impacts your
- 7:13daily life. That seems.
- 7:14Long it does right to know. What if you got the actual
- 7:17phobia? That's got to be a duration.
- 7:19Duration. I didn't know that.
- 7:20I didn't know that either. Specific phobias cause distress
- 7:23when people are faced with that particular object or situation
- 7:26they fear, and they often go to great lengths to avoid it.
- 7:29OK. Do you have any phobias?
- 7:32That's a tough question. I phobia No, but like I think,
- 7:35like I said earlier, like the whole snake thing startles me.
- 7:38I don't like have a fear of flying or a fear of like falling
- 7:40from heights or anything like that.
- 7:41Don't have a fear of drowning. So I'm I no, I mean nothing.
- 7:46I don't think that jumps out at me.
- 7:47You. Yeah, I have a fear.
- 7:49A fear of heights. You do.
- 7:51So what did we say That was whatever the Fear of Heights
- 7:54name was, But yeah. And it it happened when I was a
- 7:58child and I know exactly how and when it happened because I was
- 8:03climbing a tree and I used my dad's wooden rickety wooden
- 8:08ladder to get up into the tree and lost my balance and fell out
- 8:14of the tree on top of the ladder, thus making me afraid to
- 8:18do that again. Right.
- 8:20And it I didn't, I didn't do too obviously wasn't too worried
- 8:23about when I was young. And then it really became much
- 8:26more of a debilitating fear for me in my older age, right.
- 8:31So we were on a a family trip to Chicago and went up to the
- 8:34Willis Tower and everybody wanted to go up top to the
- 8:36observation deck and they have those new glass floor sections
- 8:41you can walk out on. Yeah, no way.
- 8:42I'm at the interior of the building and I won't even go
- 8:46near the window. Gripping onto the wall under the
- 8:49wall. And and, you know, it's a phobia
- 8:51and a fear because I'm shaking. I can't.
- 8:53I can't uncontrollably shake. I can't stop.
- 8:56Yeah, and and my girls were like, Dad, come out here, come
- 8:59out here and and you know, I could not stand on that glass.
- 9:03And but what I did do is I, I put my foot out there with them
- 9:07and we took a picture of our feet.
- 9:08And that's as much as. Much as we're going to do,
- 9:09That's it. But what's really weird is I've
- 9:13gone bungee jumping and skydiving, really so bungee
- 9:17jumping in my 20s. And so I was afraid, but
- 9:20adrenaline is so high. So I knew while I'm going up and
- 9:26it was on a crane and you jump over some water and the water
- 9:29was only like 2 feet deep. So could have done right, right,
- 9:32right. So I knew if I wasn't going to
- 9:34do it and they count to three, they'll do it 2-3 times.
- 9:37And if you don't go, we're coming down, right.
- 9:39And I, they went 321 and I just fell because I had, I did it
- 9:44with the on my ankles. Yeah.
- 9:46So you just fell and, and going up I'm like getting nervous and
- 9:49and I couldn't really look at the horizon.
- 9:51I couldn't look around because the fear is too great.
- 9:55Right Is is there a certain height that gets to be too much
- 9:57for you? Or is is it that is?
- 9:59It no. I'd be on top of my the roof of
- 10:01my house for whatever need and I could shake and fall off OK.
- 10:05And we did. In Vegas.
- 10:07We went zip lining with the zip flying on Fremont Street.
- 10:09You know, it didn't bother me at all.
- 10:10Didn't bother you at all. Isn't that weird?
- 10:11Because that's like you start up like 5 stories up.
- 10:14Yeah, but, but if you noticed when we were there with Matt, I
- 10:18wasn't standing near the edge. That is true and we also maybe
- 10:20had a cocktail or two on us. That's right, it helped a lot.
- 10:23Maybe. But I went skydiving for a gift
- 10:26to myself when I turned 40. OK, And it was tandem OK.
- 10:29And again, adrenaline. It was the most amazing
- 10:33experience. I was not afraid at all.
- 10:35Yeah, But my my guide. Hmm.
- 10:38Jumping Joe Johnson. I remember that to this day
- 10:41because he was amazing. He was so calming and it's so
- 10:45fun to be with. Right.
- 10:46Yeah, it was great. Yeah.
- 10:47I've. Always wanted to go skydiving,
- 10:48haven't done it. And one of them, one of the
- 10:51people that work for me, she is a skydive instructor.
- 10:54Like every weekend she goes and skydive.
- 10:56Well, you should go do. It I know I totally should.
- 10:58I know. And I, I think this this might
- 11:01maybe be the year I I bite the bullet and just go.
- 11:03So I got one thing to note in skydiving and and we I we we
- 11:08bought the picture package and I can show you those pictures.
- 11:10I have those pictures. There is a lot of skin on your
- 11:14face which ripples. Yes, in in the video you can see
- 11:18it rippling. Yeah, You know, and also a bit
- 11:21of advice. Don't open your mouth.
- 11:24Right. Yeah, I've heard that.
- 11:25Yeah, because. Yeah.
- 11:27Yeah, it's it. No bugs flew in anything like
- 11:30that, but it just dries out in a second.
- 11:32Sure, I'm sure. Yeah.
- 11:34And then fun. There's a whole height issue
- 11:37with my, with my headache, really severe headache.
- 11:40Yeah, you know, and that happened, but I was like
- 11:43overlooked at man, you're right. Fall into the earth.
- 11:46Does that tie in with like you have a slight fear flying as
- 11:49well? Is that tie into that is is it
- 11:50the height thing or just just the airplane?
- 11:52It's the pressure. The pressure.
- 11:54OK. So you know, when we fly
- 11:56together, yeah, I have to be a little bit inebriated and I have
- 12:00to take sinus medication. And I got to prep for it, right?
- 12:04I got to make sure I drink a ton of water.
- 12:05Yeah, take sinus medication and I have a shot or a beer or a
- 12:08couple of drinks before I get on a plane.
- 12:10Then I'm much more calm. Yes, you know, and the fear
- 12:13comes in when you're coming down in altitude and I would get a
- 12:18piercing headache right above my eye.
- 12:21And you swear I'm going to go blind, my eye is going to pop
- 12:24out. And when I talked to my doctors
- 12:26and they were like, OK, it's sinus related, OK.
- 12:29And that's why. And as soon as I do the sinus
- 12:30medicines and do that, except for the alcohol, if I do the
- 12:34rest of it, it actually does get better.
- 12:35That makes sense. That makes sense.
- 12:37OK, I get that. So how common are phobias?
- 12:41They got to be common. So specific phobias affect an
- 12:45estimated 9.1% of the US adults every year, with a higher
- 12:49prevalence among females, which is about 12 1/2 percent, than
- 12:51males, just under 6%. It's estimated that 12 1/2% of
- 12:56US adults will experience a specific phobia at some point in
- 12:59their life. Check.
- 13:01Check. Phobias can be serious and
- 13:05potentially debilitating, lead to debilitating mental health
- 13:09problems. Misinformation and
- 13:10misunderstanding still surround phobias, which can make people
- 13:13living with a phobia feel that their condition is trivialized
- 13:16or even mocked. So kind of our point today is
- 13:18not to make fun of anybody or make fun of a phobia.
- 13:21It's kind of shed some light on some of these and explain them a
- 13:24little bit. And and learn about a few of
- 13:26them that we've never heard of. Right, absolutely.
- 13:28So hopefully this effects none of you, but if it does,
- 13:30hopefully the some information will help.
- 13:32So here we go, Brian. You got the first one or I have
- 13:36the first one. I have the first one.
- 13:37Yeah, it's you. It's me.
- 13:41I'm afraid of going first, Brian.
- 13:43I don't think that's not on my left.
- 13:45On your list. All right, all right.
- 13:46First one, nomophobia, which is the fear of being without your
- 13:49mobile phone. What, is that real?
- 13:52Oh, that's real. Yeah.
- 13:54I mean, I always have my phone. With me too, I wouldn't call it
- 13:58a phobia, but if it's not with me, like I do freak out a little
- 14:00bit but so the fear of being without your phone.
- 14:02People with nomophobia experience excessive anxiety
- 14:05about not having the phone with them, their battery being low,
- 14:08or their phone being out of service.
- 14:09Regardless of the circumstances, not being able to use their
- 14:12phone causes people with nomophobia to become panicked
- 14:15and experience extreme symptoms of anxiety.
- 14:19This rare phobia often stems from cell phone addiction, which
- 14:22is fairly common. Research suggests that around
- 14:24half of men and women have cell phone related anxiety, with 20%,
- 14:28Twenty, 3% of male students labeled as nomophobic, with 77%
- 14:32checking their phones over 35 times daily.
- 14:35That's that's excessive. That's excessive.
- 14:38Now, yes, I understand in today's culture, everything's in
- 14:41your phone. And when they said students
- 14:44labeled as nomophobic, yeah, you know, that was interesting to me
- 14:47because maybe it's not so much our generation, right, that has
- 14:50this phobia. Yeah.
- 14:52Although, I mean, my nose is in the phone, right?
- 14:54It's 24/7. It's in the phone a lot.
- 14:56Yeah, me as well, but not as bad as it's like I like I watch my
- 14:59kids and like they grew up with their phone.
- 15:02So like they watch YouTube videos and TikTok videos.
- 15:05I mean, everything's on their phones, on their phone, always
- 15:06on their phone. And what's funny, I think for
- 15:09Christmas last year, my youngest daughter Kayla asked, can I get
- 15:14ATV in my room? And I literally laughed at her
- 15:16and said, no, you're on your phone all the time.
- 15:18Why would I put ATV in your? Room and that's how we watch TV
- 15:21and I don't because I'm of the generation watches the show
- 15:24right and my kids will watch the show air quotes in the in the
- 15:29air here and look at the phone at the same time right.
- 15:32Yeah. How?
- 15:33How do you? Yeah.
- 15:34I don't I, I, I have to, I have to focus.
- 15:36Yeah, yeah. And both even even your age to
- 15:40my age, our we're just we're a little bit we're the same
- 15:43generation generation, but we're still different in the fact that
- 15:46I'm still using printed paperwork here to read this this
- 15:51actual text about the the phobia and you're using your computer.
- 15:54Yes. So.
- 15:56Crazy. And that's just five.
- 15:58Years. I'm old.
- 15:58Old school. You're old.
- 15:59School. I'm old school.
- 16:01I use the tablet using the computer.
- 16:02I use the tablet once. Like, Nah, computer, it's
- 16:04easier. Yeah, So, all right, I got 1
- 16:06here. OK.
- 16:07And it's going to be it's going to take me a minute here.
- 16:10It's it's an odd 1A rocky Bayou two row phobia.
- 16:16OK, let's say a rocky Bayou two row phobia.
- 16:19We'll go with that. Yes, It sounds pretty good.
- 16:21Mm hmm. It's the fear of peanut butter
- 16:23sticking to the roof of your mouth.
- 16:24OK. What?
- 16:26OK, so apparently it affects people in varying degrees.
- 16:30While anyone can experience this, those with I'll say that
- 16:34phobia have an extreme fear of the sensation of it on the roof
- 16:39of their mouth. Some individuals with the
- 16:42condition may only eat a small amount of peanut butter, while
- 16:45others avoid it altogether. They believe that there is a
- 16:49very rare phobia that can stem from the greater phobia of
- 16:53sticky things or the fear of choking.
- 16:57OK, when I read that like OK I get that.
- 16:59That makes a little more sense. Because you do get that in your
- 17:02mouth and, and you're like, OK, there's that quick second, that
- 17:05moment of like, I need some water, right?
- 17:09Can also stem from a traumatic incident with peanut butter,
- 17:12which OK such as choking or being allergic to it, right?
- 17:16So the allergic thing is, I don't want to say funny to me,
- 17:20but so again, we're from a different generation and when we
- 17:23were kids, like our parents just fed us everything, right.
- 17:25And when, Mike? Had to eat what they made.
- 17:28Anything, what they made and when my kids were growing up,
- 17:30you know, you had people have conversations about, well, what
- 17:31if your kids are allergic to peanut butter?
- 17:33I'm like, I don't know, let's give them something to see what
- 17:35happens. Yeah.
- 17:36So see if they blow up, See if they blow up.
- 17:37Right. So that's kind of how I approach
- 17:39it, Like, like I'm not going to, I'm not going to be afraid of
- 17:43them having an allergy to it. Like let's find out if they do
- 17:45and then we'll go from there. When I was young, I was allergic
- 17:48to bee stings. When I was 8 or 9, I got stung
- 17:50by bees. I blew up with hives and.
- 17:52Do you have to carry an EpiPen? No, because I got stung later in
- 17:55life, 5-10 years later, 1617 and just nothing.
- 17:58I mean, you got a little wealth and that was it.
- 17:59Oh, interesting. Yeah.
- 18:01So I think that's kind of the same thing with food allergies.
- 18:03Like yes, I believe people are have food allergies, they're
- 18:06allergic to food, but is it, is it potentially worse because
- 18:10they've avoided those foods or whole eyes?
- 18:11Like maybe if you slowly introduced it, would that reduce
- 18:15it? Reduce it?
- 18:15There's a lot of literature out on that.
- 18:18Yeah, a ton. And that's a different podcast,
- 18:19but. Which I don't know that we're
- 18:21gonna go into no rocket, but, you know, we said you're
- 18:23allergic to bee sticks. I'm allergic to penicillin.
- 18:26Oh, and it didn't when I was a kid.
- 18:27I wasn't right, You know, until I was an adult and had to get
- 18:31penicillin for whatever happened.
- 18:33I broke out in hives. Yeah.
- 18:35And so that was in my 20s and I've never had penicillin since.
- 18:40Yeah, peanut butter. I eat about 512 tablespoons of
- 18:43that a day. So that's that's.
- 18:44Well, so do I. It's my daily breakfast.
- 18:46Love it, love it. It's good protein.
- 18:48All right. Next one plutophobia, which is
- 18:50the fear of money. How are you getting all these
- 18:52easy ones? I know how to work the system,
- 18:54my friend. Yeah, so many people probably
- 18:58wish they had more money, but plutophobia is a fear of money
- 19:01or wealth. People with plutophobia may fear
- 19:04wealthy people or fear becoming wealthy themselves.
- 19:07They generally dread money or having to deal with it.
- 19:10I'm not fearful of becoming wealthy.
- 19:12I know I'm not going to become wealthy.
- 19:14Exactly. So definitely not a fear, but I
- 19:17I would like to have that fear because.
- 19:19I don't know. I don't want the fear.
- 19:20I just want the wealthy part, the health.
- 19:22Part of it. People with this fear may
- 19:24potentially sabotage their careers to avoid making more.
- 19:27I shouldn't laugh at that. Sabotage their careers to avoid
- 19:30making more money or becoming wealthy.
- 19:32The fear of becoming wealthy may stem from the fear of the
- 19:35responsibilities and pressures associated with it, or the fear
- 19:39of being the victim of a robbery.
- 19:40So I can understand if you're a victim, yes, that I can
- 19:43understand. But I think that creates trauma
- 19:45elsewhere. Yeah, you know, I don't know.
- 19:47I mean, I people who don't have this fear probably cannot for
- 19:51the life and we can't understand it.
- 19:52Yeah, and you see stories all the time where people, like,
- 19:55they win the lottery or somebody who's super famous or a sports
- 19:58star, whatever. And the one that comes to mind
- 20:01for some odd reason is MC Hammer.
- 20:04Yeah, I was a huge MC Hammer fan back in the day.
- 20:05I bet you were. I was huge and.
- 20:07Did you have the pants? I did not have the pants, but I
- 20:09did go see him in concert. I and as he's in, in one part of
- 20:12the concert, he'd walk. We were on the main floor and he
- 20:13walked through the crowd and singing a song.
- 20:15I, you know, one of those and I got to touch his shoulders.
- 20:18He walked by, but I was, but you know, he was, he was so starved.
- 20:25I know, right. But in the early 90s, high to
- 20:27fame and, and he had this huge house and his huge posse and
- 20:29everything. Well, now, I mean, the guy
- 20:31couldn't be, I mean, he has nothing to his name.
- 20:33He has nothing to show for it anymore, right?
- 20:35And those kind of things I think happen all the time.
- 20:38And to me, that's more just a lack of money management than
- 20:40the fear of money. Sure, Money management.
- 20:42Money management. Yeah.
- 20:44All right, all right. The next one's mine.
- 20:45Oh my gosh. A short 1.
- 20:48What the heck? Are you doing this on purpose?
- 20:50Yes, all right. Oh my gosh, bear with me.
- 20:54This is super long, OK? It's hai pupa tu maustro SUS
- 21:01whipti lilophobia. I said that pretty well that.
- 21:04Was pretty good. That was pretty good.
- 21:06Guess what? It is the fear of long words.
- 21:09Something all right? Well, and ironically, yeah, it's
- 21:13the longest word in the dictionary.
- 21:14How? Many letters. 36 letters.
- 21:16Holy buckets. And I'm not going to say it
- 21:18again. So hopefully got that the first
- 21:20time. Hit rewind.
- 21:22Yeah, another name for the phobia is OK, here we go, says
- 21:26Quiptilophobia. Yeah, that's easier to say.
- 21:29That is a little bit easier. It's half the letters, half the
- 21:31letters. It is believed that the phobia
- 21:35of long words develops from being embarrassed by pronouncing
- 21:38long words incorrectly. This may occur when while
- 21:41reading aloud in front of a class as a child, the phobia
- 21:45can. The phobia can also be a common
- 21:48in people with dyslexia. Awesome, yeah.
- 21:51That sounds. I should have this fear.
- 21:53One would think I should have this fear because if you recall
- 21:56in the past podcast, we're talking about speech class and
- 21:59how I would be embarrassed, right?
- 22:01And my bright red ears. That's because of the reading.
- 22:05Reading in front of people, just speaking in front of people is a
- 22:07fear. Right and look at you now now
- 22:09you're a podcast who's going up to I.
- 22:11Only see one person, in fact, that is.
- 22:13That is true. That is true.
- 22:15Who is my buddy? That's right.
- 22:16And I can talk to you. All day long, yeah.
- 22:24Hey, this is Rob. I wanted to take a moment to
- 22:26talk about spring and Green. I've been using them since 2007.

- 22:57bit of cash right there on the website or shoot them a message
- 22:59with any questions. That's spring. dashgreen.com,
- 23:02springdashgreen.com. All right, the next one is
- 23:14global phobia, which is the fear of balloons.
- 23:18Really. Yeah, well, that's what it says.
- 23:21The level of fear varies from person to person, and can range
- 23:23from avoiding being near balloons to avoiding places with
- 23:26balloons altogether. In some people, the fear is so
- 23:29great that even seeing a balloon on television triggers intense
- 23:32anxiety. Well, with the movie it.
- 23:35This is probably not helping you.
- 23:39This rare fear can be especially hard for young children, as
- 23:42balloons are often present at children's birthday parties.
- 23:44Global phobia is usually brought on by traumatic experience with
- 23:48the balloon as a child, such as popping a balloon or being
- 23:50frightened by the noise. It can also be linked to the
- 23:52fear of clowns or coral phobia. That's close as there are, as
- 23:59the two are often found together.
- 24:00So funny when I first read this one at first that you've seen
- 24:03the movie dodgeball. Yes?
- 24:05OK. And the antithesis is global
- 24:09gym. OK so I thought it was a fear of
- 24:11gyms at first. Oh, that's fear of balloons.
- 24:14No, I could see, especially if you have a latex allergy.
- 24:18Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I could be. Fearful of the balloons?
- 24:21But I can also see as a child, like somebody sings up behind
- 24:24you and pops a balloon, I could see how that could freak out and
- 24:26stay with you for a while. Could stay with you, but I don't
- 24:28know, I did it. I still like going into dark
- 24:33rooms where nobody's at and then as soon as somebody else walks
- 24:35by, jump out and go Boo. Did you see?
- 24:38Yeah. OK, so I used to do that to my
- 24:39sister all the time. Yeah.
- 24:40But did you see on TikTok those people that will paint, do the
- 24:45whole face paint black? No, everything.
- 24:47Paint it all black, Obviously eyes are white and then their
- 24:50smile, their teeth are white. And then they'll sneak up while
- 24:52somebody's in bed or whatever, and they'll just sit next to
- 24:55them waiting for them to. See.
- 24:57Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Oh my gosh I want to do it so
- 25:00bad but my wife would divorce. Oh, she would kill you.
- 25:02She would absolutely just call the cops out.
- 25:04She wouldn't murder you. All right, the next one is
- 25:09paganophobia. Oh, that's an easy one.
- 25:11Yeah, it's not bad. You know what it is?
- 25:13What? The fear of beards.
- 25:15Fear the beard. Fear the beard.
- 25:17Because you know what? They'd be afraid of us.
- 25:19We both have. Beards.
- 25:21This usually stems from an alarming incident with a bearded
- 25:24person. It could also arise from a
- 25:26person not liking that a beard hides someone's face.
- 25:30So OK, I can understand that to a degree.
- 25:32To a point. People with paganophobia, I said
- 25:37that pretty fast will avoid those with beards and may even
- 25:40have anxiety when looking at pictures with a person with a
- 25:43beard. That seems that's really deep
- 25:45into the phobia. They usually will not be friends
- 25:48with someone who has a a beard and feel extremely nervous when
- 25:51talking to someone. That explains why my friend list
- 25:53got a little shorter recently. So much of your, of your friends
- 25:58have this phobia that they're like, I'm gonna defriend him.
- 26:02I'll take all of those other friends there.
- 26:04You go to me. You know who doesn't have a fear
- 26:07of beards? Our our new little grandbaby.
- 26:11Yeah. As I was holding her today, she
- 26:13looked right at me and smiled, then grabbed the heck out of my
- 26:15beard and yanked and Oh my God, it hurt.
- 26:17Well, a little. Five months old.
- 26:18They have a good grip. Yeah, but they she can't grab
- 26:21anything on top of your head. Thank you.
- 26:26Appreciate that. Thanks for that, I got actually
- 26:28a a rim shot as he did. All right, next one decide a
- 26:31phobia is. What?
- 26:34If you're making decisions, yeah right, that one kind of spells
- 26:36itself. Making any kind of decision can
- 26:39seem impossible for someone with the cytophobia, as they do not
- 26:42trust their own opinions. A person with the cytophobia may
- 26:45excessively rely on others to help them with decision making.
- 26:48They may even turn to external sources such as astrology for
- 26:52advice. Decide.
- 26:54A phobia could be part of a larger mental health disorder
- 26:56called dependent personality disorder.
- 26:59One of the symptoms of dependent personality disorder is relying
- 27:02on others to make decisions. Oh, interesting.
- 27:05Yeah, I think I know some people that might have decide if yeah,
- 27:09decide. Work world, work and family.
- 27:11Family too. Yeah, I, I the work world to me
- 27:14is that one kind of is funny because I come across this all
- 27:17the time, not only my current job, but in previous jobs where
- 27:20some people just refuse to make decisions.
- 27:23And sometimes it's part of their job.
- 27:24You have to be the decision making, decide which way
- 27:26something's going to go, but just absolutely refuse to be the
- 27:28one that's, you know, throw their hand up and say I made
- 27:30that call. Well, how do you make it
- 27:31through? I don't.
- 27:33Know your job if you can't make a decision.
- 27:34It's also kind of like some drivers on the highway going
- 27:37back to a previous podcast. Are you annoyed by some drivers?
- 27:41I quite am. Is there a phobia there's?
- 27:44Definitely not a phobia, but I might be afraid to get into road
- 27:48rage incidents. You might get.
- 27:50Into road rage. I might, I might.
- 27:52OK, so another is Itro. Nope.
- 27:57Say that again. Isotropphobia.
- 28:00There you go. Which is the fear of mirrors
- 28:03now. Aren't vampires then?
- 28:06Yeah. Have itrophobia.
- 28:08I that would that would be vampires, I would think right
- 28:09because. Well they, well, I don't know
- 28:12because they can't see them, so they have no reflection.
- 28:14Oh, that's true. That's.
- 28:15True. So what are they afraid?
- 28:16They don't see anything. That's true.
- 28:17True. But so I don't know.
- 28:19Yeah, it's up in the air, up in the air.
- 28:20But this this phobia is also sometimes referred to as
- 28:24spectrophobia or or cat no. Cattle.
- 28:30Cattop or. A troll Cattoprophobia.
- 28:36Let's go, let's go, let's go. Oh my gosh, we just butchered
- 28:40that. Butchered that.
- 28:41People of this fear are unable to look at themselves in a
- 28:43mirror. The fear may also extend to any
- 28:47reflective surface. This fear may stem from
- 28:50suspicious suspicions about mirrors.
- 28:52I can, you know, I can understand the whole witchcraft
- 28:55thing in the world. You know?
- 28:56For instance, a person may be afraid of being breaking a
- 29:00mirror because they believe it causes bad luck.
- 29:03Others may fear that they will be something supernatural in the
- 29:07mirror, such as the ghost. OK.
- 29:10So that's kind of interesting. Interesting.
- 29:12Yeah, Yeah. Superstitions about mirrors.
- 29:15So the fun house is out for these.
- 29:17People the fun house is out. Isotropophobia can develop in
- 29:23from low self esteem self esteem as a person may feel ashamed of
- 29:28their physical appearance and not want to see in a mirror it
- 29:32can it can lead to depression in some cases which may cause may
- 29:36require professional treatment in the form of counselling or
- 29:39medication. They also wouldn't like to play
- 29:41the the the carnival game where you throw balls at the mirrors
- 29:44and try and break them. Oh, that's like 7 years bad
- 29:47luck. Seven years bad luck.
- 29:48Seven years bad luck, right? Walking under a ladder as you're
- 29:51throwing balls at a broken air. Black cat and a black cat walks
- 29:54by. All right, this one is
- 29:57interesting. Papa Phobia.
- 30:00What is Papa phobia is. The fear of puppets, dummies and
- 30:03marionettes. OK, so there are some creepy
- 30:05Marianess. There are saying some creepy
- 30:07puppets too. People with this phobia fear
- 30:09puppets, dummies and marionettes.
- 30:11As with pedophobia, the fear of dolls.
- 30:15OK. It's more common in children,
- 30:17but adults can be affected too. Like other phobias, there are
- 30:20thought to be both genetic and environmental causes to
- 30:23puppophobia. The and popular culture scary
- 30:26movies feature evil puppet characters, yet it could be a
- 30:30contributory factor too. So definitely, yeah, definitely
- 30:32movies would. Movies.
- 30:34Oh, Chucky. Chucky.
- 30:35Yeah. Oh, all those, yeah, that's
- 30:37really played into that. Most anyone.
- 30:39I haven't seen that. Megan, have you seen?
- 30:41Oh yeah, I've seen previous of Megan.
- 30:42I'm not gonna. I don't watch horror movies.
- 30:44DP robot doll thing. Yeah, I, yeah.
- 30:46I would. You know that when you're a
- 30:47child and you watch the scary movies.
- 30:51Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:52From from then on, the rest of your life, you can't, like, put
- 30:54your foot outside of the bed covers way to sleep because you
- 30:57think something's going to grab it.
- 30:59Yeah. I am late in life.
- 31:02Yeah. And I still can't do that.
- 31:07I'll like, go to bed and, like, I want to stretch over my arm
- 31:09and hang my arm over the side of the bed.
- 31:10And I'm like, I'll do for, like a few seconds.
- 31:13Like, I'll pull that arm back in.
- 31:14Something's going to grab me. How does that hang with you the
- 31:17rest of your life, right? You know what movie really
- 31:20freaked me out? And again, we're older, so
- 31:23Poltergeist. Ohh yeah.
- 31:25Yeah, and and the part and not the the Poltergeist movie saw
- 31:28me. Yes, it was a little, you know,
- 31:29you know, fine. That's a PG movie.
- 31:31No. Well, that was before PG 13 came
- 31:34out. That can't be a pitch.
- 31:35It is a. Vehicle.
- 31:36Look it up. It's a PG movie.
- 31:37But the scene that really freaked me out was right when
- 31:40everything's starting to get haywire in the kids bedroom.
- 31:42Yeah, and the little clown on the chair.
- 31:44And it was. The clown I remember.
- 31:46That yeah, the clown disappears and then he's looking forward to
- 31:49thinking it's under the beds. He pulls up the covers and looks
- 31:52under the bed or pulls up the sheets and looks under the bed.
- 31:53It's not there. And then he goes the other side,
- 31:55pulls it up, it's not there. And he's like, Oh my God.
- 31:57He sits back up a bed and there's the clown looking right
- 31:59at him. Perhaps his arm was around his
- 32:00neck and freaks out. And it's old movie so we can
- 32:05talk about it, but you know, everything's like moving into
- 32:07the into the closet and it opens up and it's sucking everything
- 32:11in there and it's just scary right at the time.
- 32:15And you had to go get the sucks into the little girl and you go,
- 32:18the dad goes in on a rope to retrieve her.
- 32:22And he's pulled through downstairs in the.
- 32:25They were in the bathroom in the in the in the bathtub.
- 32:28I remember. Yeah.
- 32:29With that, really. I don't know what you call her.
- 32:33The seance woman that was Yeah. Guiding them through.
- 32:36Yeah. And then she turns and she just
- 32:38creepily says go. To the light, Go to the light.
- 32:43Oh, man, you have the movie. That was an early 80s movie.
- 32:46That's right when we first got cable in HBO.
- 32:48And that thing played non-stop in HBO.
- 32:50And I was in my early teens and Oh my gosh, yeah, yeah.
- 32:53But every time I was on, I watched it, yeah, knowing I
- 32:55would be freaked out. Did you watch Friday the 13th?
- 32:59Yeah, I mean, I've yes, I've seen it, but not as much as
- 33:01Poltergeist. Oh, well, when it came out and I
- 33:04was younger, you know, and watched it because you know,
- 33:07when Jason gets his head chopped, that was like
- 33:11horrifying and amazing at the same time.
- 33:13Yeah, yeah, I was big. Friday the 13th horror movie,
- 33:17like when that first came out. Yeah.
- 33:18That was cool. And Halloween.
- 33:20Halloween. Yeah, Yeah.
- 33:22OK, let's get off that. I'm already scared.
- 33:26All right, this next one is tripophobia.
- 33:30Tripophobia. Tripophobia.
- 33:32Fear of holes and patterns again, Shouldn't laugh.
- 33:37No, you shouldn't. Shouldn't I totally shouldn't.
- 33:39So it's an aversion to patterns of holes or circles that trigger
- 33:43a feeling of anxiety, repulsion and disgust.
- 33:47This version can also manifest it as a fear of clusters of
- 33:51eyes. Have you seen that?
- 33:54I've seen this. I've seen that.
- 33:55And it. It's creepy.
- 33:56Yeah, but I don't have a fear of it.
- 33:59It's just creepy. It's creepy.
- 34:01It's like the spider crossing, walking off my foot.
- 34:03That's a kind. It's creepy.
- 34:04Yeah, yeah. Especially when when they are
- 34:06arranged in a way that resembles whole objects that commonly
- 34:11trigger trypophobia include honeycomb sponges, sunflowers,
- 34:16and seeded fruits. Makes sense.
- 34:18Makes sense? I can understand that a lot
- 34:20because when you see like, a whole cluster of eyeballs and
- 34:23eyes, you know, it is creepy. It's creepy.
- 34:25I'm picturing a SpongeBob episode, though, and that's not
- 34:28creepy. SpongeBob.
- 34:29Yeah, he's not creepy. He's not.
- 34:31Can you sing the song? Well, there's about pineapple
- 34:34under the sea. SpongeBob SquarePants next.
- 34:40Thank you. You're welcome.
- 34:41That was great. All right, next one,
- 34:43glossophobia, which is the fear of public speaking.
- 34:46I think I have. That is that why I'm doing this
- 34:48one? Yeah, because I'm afraid you're
- 34:50afraid. So it's a social anxiety
- 34:52disorder. It's the fear of public
- 34:53speaking. It causes intense anxiety and
- 34:55discomfort when speaking in front of others, often
- 34:58significantly impacting many aspects of life.
- 35:01People with glossophobia experience significant fear and
- 35:03anxiety when anticipating or facing public speaking
- 35:06situations. So I have a fear of public
- 35:09speaking, but it doesn't. I don't know, it doesn't.
- 35:13Stop you or inhibit you? It does a little bit actually.
- 35:16So what happens is for 24 hours prior to I know I have to speak,
- 35:24I'm I've got anxiety and I will start breathing heavier, not
- 35:30hyperventilate, but close to it. And when it gets closer and
- 35:33closer and closer, even though I've practiced whatever the
- 35:35speech might be, I am super fearful and I'm sweating and all
- 35:40this happens. And I think it's truly the fear
- 35:44of, of being in front of and being judged.
- 35:48That's why this podcast, yeah. You're not judging me.
- 35:53No, no, you're judge. Judges them, but not at me.
- 35:56Not you. I think you're swell.
- 35:57Swell. Yeah.
- 35:58Oh God, I'm. Swell, so you don't do the whole
- 36:01picture them in their underwear thing or naked or that.
- 36:03Whole no it doesn't work. It doesn't work.
- 36:04Yeah, I don't think that works either.
- 36:05I think that's kind. Of you know, and I thought, you
- 36:08know, you should conquer your fears, right?
- 36:09Conquer your fears, try to to be a better person.
- 36:13And So what did I do? I was in the choir at church and
- 36:19I said, I'll be a Cantor and I'll go up in front of the
- 36:23entire congregation and I'll sing.
- 36:25Oh, it didn't help my fear. I thought it would.
- 36:30I thought, you're going to be comfortable with this.
- 36:32You're going to do it. It's going to get better.
- 36:34It just kept being more afraid of it at time.
- 36:36And eventually I realized, hey, you don't.
- 36:38You don't have to do. That yeah, yeah, best
- 36:40intentions, but yeah, just just passed.
- 36:42I tried hard pass. All right.
- 36:45And lastly, we have what Rob mentioned earlier, claurophobia,
- 36:51the fear of clowns, which I completely agree, creepy clowns,
- 36:57psychological fear of clowns, which can stem from a
- 37:01combination of factors, including the uncanny nature of
- 37:04their appearance, the unpredictable nature of their
- 37:07behavior, and the potential for hidden intent.
- 37:13Clowns clown makeup can mask facial expressions, making it
- 37:17difficult to decipher their true emotional state, which can be
- 37:20unsettling. Their exaggerated features and
- 37:24erratic actions also contribute to the sense of unease and
- 37:29potential danger. Plus, I think all the horror
- 37:33movies out there, right, you know, featuring clowns, Every
- 37:36other one is a creepy clown. You know, they've got to play
- 37:39into. Yeah, why this fear is for sure
- 37:42is there. Every screen movie has a clown.
- 37:44Why? Because they're creepy and
- 37:46scary. They're.
- 37:47Creepy and scary, but my gosh. But you remember when we were
- 37:50little, Yeah. And clowns were a thing on TV
- 37:53and they were always happy. And I can't remember Bozo, Bozo.
- 37:56Yeah, yeah, they were always fun.
- 38:00Yeah, everybody wanted to clown at their birthday party.
- 38:03Maybe it's a sign of the times like 50s and clowns where
- 38:05everybody loved clowns and then as you get to the 70s and 80s
- 38:07and horror movies, then they all went right to shit.
- 38:10Yeah. Right, all right, that's about
- 38:16it for today everyone. Thanks for listening.
