- 1:02Welcome everyone to Master Building Your Life with
- 1:07Discipline, Growth, and Ownership.
- 1:09This is season or series five.
- 1:12It's show 23, and it's episode number three.
- 1:15This is more than a show.
- 1:18This has become a standard for people, a
- 1:20way of life.
- 1:21Hey, I'm John C.
- 1:22Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 1:27podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, and
- 1:31a proud, passionate, lifelong learner and a very
- 1:36grateful author.
- 1:37But beyond titles, I'm someone who believes that
- 1:41your life is built by what you do
- 1:43consistently, not occasionally.
- 1:47Today, I'm diving into one of the most
- 1:50powerful forces that determine success or failure.
- 1:53What is it?
- 1:54Discipline.
- 1:56It's not motivation.
- 1:57It's not luck.
- 1:58It is discipline.
- 2:00Because you see, motivation fades, feelings change, but
- 2:04discipline stays with us through the thick and
- 2:06the thin.
- 2:07Discipline, ladies and gentlemen, is what gets you
- 2:09up in the morning when you do not
- 2:12feel like it.
- 2:13It's what keeps you focused when distractions are
- 2:16everywhere.
- 2:17It's what separates people who talk about success
- 2:20from those who actually live it.
- 2:23Yeah, there's a concept.
- 2:25Self-control and consistency are the foundation of
- 2:28everything meaningful you want to build.
- 2:31Without them, goals remain ideas.
- 2:33With them, ideas actually become a reality we
- 2:36can celebrate.
- 2:37So today, I'm going to challenge you to
- 2:40take ownership, to raise your standards, and commit
- 2:43to small actions that shape your future.
- 2:46Are you ready?
- 2:46Let's break it down together.
- 2:48Number one, wake up with a purpose and
- 2:52stick to a routine.
- 2:54When you wake up with intention, you control
- 2:56your day instead of reacting to it.
- 2:59A strong routine builds stability and sets the
- 3:02tone for consistent success.
- 3:04What do I do?
- 3:04You guys know I did the paper for
- 3:06a while, but I also have moved to
- 3:08the electronic version because when you get things
- 3:11off the paper, you actually stress less because
- 3:17it's just all there.
- 3:19All right?
- 3:20I think a lot of people say, oh,
- 3:21John, that's a lot of work.
- 3:22But I got to tell you, looking at
- 3:24that sheet and saying, oh, gee, I did
- 3:25this, I did that, that's a great feeling.
- 3:27I mean, just going on to my Google
- 3:29Calendar or whatever calendar you guys want to
- 3:31use, it's totally up to you.
- 3:33But I can tell you that going on
- 3:36to my digital calendar every day, which I
- 3:39do several times a day, and so there
- 3:41was a task I did before.
- 3:43So what I do is I go over
- 3:45to that task that I was working on,
- 3:49and then all I do is I click
- 3:53the little button there, like there was a
- 3:55post I did this morning, I'll click on
- 3:56that, and there it goes.
- 3:58There's another thing I did, and I could
- 3:59see that's gone too.
- 4:01So pretty cool, right?
- 4:03Really, really cool.
- 4:04But this happens because of discipline.
- 4:07That's why it happens.
- 4:08Okay?
- 4:09That's why it happens.
- 4:10So number two, guys, do hard things first
- 4:14and avoid procrastination.
- 4:17You see, the longer you delay difficult tasks,
- 4:20the heavier they become.
- 4:22Tackle them early and you build confidence, momentum,
- 4:26and mental strength.
- 4:29Some people are waiting for things to be
- 4:31handed to them, but they don't actually take
- 4:33the action, and then they're wondering why they're
- 4:36in the same spot they were before.
- 4:39I'm going to tell you, because you're just
- 4:41hoping, not taking any action.
- 4:46Pretty cool, right?
- 4:51I think a lot of people get stuck
- 4:54sometimes, and I think what happens is when
- 5:02you realize you're not going where you want
- 5:05to go, all right?
- 5:07You can do one of two things.
- 5:09You can complain, or you can take action
- 5:12and you can fix it, right?
- 5:13You know something's not working, so you've got
- 5:15to change.
- 5:16Number three, guys, control impulses and limit distractions.
- 5:23Every distraction steals time from your future, everyone,
- 5:26even the small ones.
- 5:28Discipline means choosing what matters most over what
- 5:31feels easy to the moment.
- 5:32And I know we all want things that
- 5:34are easy, right?
- 5:35Things that are so easy and simple.
- 5:38But when we really understand this, it comes
- 5:43down to the fact that when we have
- 5:47discipline and we win, the dopamine in our
- 5:52brain kicks up more, and we want to
- 5:54do more of this.
- 5:55It's like a natural drug that's in our
- 5:57body, and it propels us forward, and that's
- 6:01pretty powerful, guys.
- 6:02Number four, build strong habits and eliminate the
- 6:06weak ones.
- 6:07Your habits are your system.
- 6:09Strong habits push you forward automatically, while the
- 6:12weak ones, they quietly hold you back.
- 6:16And sometimes it shows up where people say,
- 6:19you know, just let him be, let her
- 6:20be.
- 6:22But letting somebody be in the way that
- 6:24they can just be the same way and
- 6:26keep getting the same results, you know, when
- 6:29we think about change, Einstein said something a
- 6:34long time ago, doing the same thing over
- 6:36and over again and expecting different results, that
- 6:39is insanity.
- 6:41So why are we doing that?
- 6:43Why?
- 6:45Why are we doing that?
- 6:47There's no need for it.
- 6:48Number five, track progress and stay consistent daily.
- 6:53What gets measured improves.
- 6:55I've said that before.
- 6:56When you track your actions, you stay accountable
- 6:58and can clearly see your growth over time.
- 7:00That's what marketing companies do, advertising companies do,
- 7:04customer service teams do.
- 7:05They look at things over time and they
- 7:07track them.
- 7:09Number six, finish what you start and stay
- 7:12committed.
- 7:13Starting is easy.
- 7:15Finishing is where discipline lives.
- 7:17Following through builds trust with yourself and strengthens
- 7:21your identity.
- 7:22See, guys, this is how real growth happens,
- 7:25not overnight, not instantaneously, but through daily consistent
- 7:32small actions.
- 7:33Through these small actions, repeated with intention, focus,
- 7:37and discipline, you do not need to be
- 7:40perfect.
- 7:41Let's get that out of the way.
- 7:43You need to be consistent because when you
- 7:46take ownership of your actions, control your habits,
- 7:51and commit to improving every single day, you
- 7:54begin to build a life that reflects your
- 7:56highest potential.
- 7:58This is your moment to step up, stay
- 8:01focused, stay disciplined, and keep building.
- 8:06I think a lot of times when people
- 8:08hear these things, they're just like, how do
- 8:11I do this stuff?
- 8:12Like, how am I supposed to move forward?
- 8:15And I know this can be a very,
- 8:18very big problem for everybody, a very, very
- 8:20big problem.
- 8:22And I know you're saying to me, John,
- 8:24this doesn't make sense, right?
- 8:28Doesn't make sense.
- 8:31And you're probably saying to me, John, it
- 8:33doesn't make sense, but then how do I
- 8:35change it?
- 8:35How do I become different?
- 8:41I think this comes down to an awareness,
- 8:45guys, an awareness.
- 8:47That's where it comes down to, an awareness,
- 8:50right?
- 8:51So we know how to control impulses.
- 8:54Not every urge deserves an action, right?
- 8:57I think that's hard for some people to
- 8:59realize because they think that you have to
- 9:03respond, but sometimes in responding, we're actually responding
- 9:06wrong, right?
- 9:08I know that can get people really, how
- 9:12can I say, a little bit crazed up
- 9:13if I do say so myself.
- 9:14So that's important to actually understand.
- 9:21Number six, guys, finish what you start and
- 9:23stay committed.
- 9:25Starting is easy, as I said, but it's
- 9:27the finishing, the finishing that makes life hard.
- 9:34Not that you can't do it, not that
- 9:37it's not possible, but you find ways to
- 9:39not want to do it because you're procrastinating,
- 9:42right?
- 9:43I think that's hard for a lot of
- 9:46people to admit to procrastinating, even to themselves.
- 9:51They don't want to admit that.
- 9:53So as I said, Einstein said, if you
- 9:55do the same thing over and over again
- 9:56and you expect different results, that is insanity.
- 10:01That's insanity.
- 10:02So let's stop doing that, right?
- 10:05Let us stop doing that.
- 10:07And when we stop doing that, we'll start
- 10:10to move in a positive direction.
- 10:13We'll start to become aware of those things
- 10:16that maybe were there the whole time, but
- 10:19for whatever reason, we just decided to dismiss
- 10:22them, to not pay attention to them.
- 10:25When those were the keys that we needed
- 10:29to become successful.
- 10:32Think about that for a moment.
- 10:34The keys are already in you, but sometimes
- 10:39you just let them go.
- 10:41You dismiss them like they have no validity.
- 10:49And I know that's hard for a lot
- 10:51of people to understand, but if you're at
- 10:55the same place that you've been for a
- 10:57long time, then I think this advice might
- 10:59actually pay off for you.
- 11:03You need consistency, okay?
- 11:06And you need discipline.
- 11:08That's what you need.
- 11:10That'll help you build the strong habits, right?
- 11:13And your habits become that system.
- 11:14They'll push you forward automatically while the weak
- 11:18ones try to hold you back.
- 11:20Track your progress and stay consistent.
- 11:23As I said, let's measure things.
- 11:25What gets measured can get changed, all right?
- 11:29That's important.
- 11:30And I know you don't wanna finish things,
- 11:32but it's important to finish.
- 11:34See, that's where success lives, when it gets
- 11:37hard.
- 11:38The next time it becomes a little bit
- 11:39easier, a little bit easier than it was
- 11:44before.
- 11:47Ladies and gentlemen, avoid procrastination.
- 11:50Delaying tasks increases stress.
- 11:52We know this.
- 11:53Taking action immediately builds confidence and clarity.
- 11:58So I want you to focus on priorities.
- 12:02Not everything matters equally.
- 12:04Identify what moves your life forward and give
- 12:07it your true energy.
- 12:10I think sometimes we don't go somewhere because
- 12:13somebody else says, oh, that's not gonna work.
- 12:16But that's for them, that's not for you.
- 12:19They shouldn't be telling you what you should
- 12:21or shouldn't be doing.
- 12:22That's you, that's your mind, that's your body.
- 12:26A lot of people allow others to put
- 12:29them into the state where they basically, well,
- 12:33sabotage themselves.
- 12:35And they don't even know they're doing it.
- 12:37They think they're trying to help them, but
- 12:39really they're not.
- 12:41And they're not doing it intentionally.
- 12:44They think they're giving good advice, but they're
- 12:46really not.
- 12:48Number 17, set boundaries.
- 12:50Protect your time and your energy.
- 12:54Saying no is often more powerful than saying
- 12:57yes.
- 12:57Because you see, when you say no to
- 13:00some things, you're actually saying yes to yourself.
- 13:04That's a powerful thing, guys.
- 13:06A very, very powerful thing.
- 13:08But I know a lot of you are
- 13:09gonna write this off and say, oh, John,
- 13:11it doesn't matter.
- 13:12It does matter.
- 13:13It matters a lot.
- 13:18Number 18, limit distractions.
- 13:21Distractions will always destroy the focus, regardless of
- 13:24how small or big they are.
- 13:26Create an environment that supports deep, uninterrupted work.
- 13:32Yeah, there's a concept.
- 13:35Number 19, build strong habits.
- 13:38Success is automated through habits.
- 13:42Build routines that work for you, not against
- 13:45you, all right?
- 13:48I think that's an important one for us
- 13:51to understand.
- 13:52Eliminate the weak habits, guys.
- 13:56Small bad habits compound over time.
- 13:59Identify and remove what holds you back right
- 14:02now.
- 14:06Stay consistent daily.
- 14:07Consistency beats intensity.
- 14:09Small actions done daily create lasting change.
- 14:13Follow-through, doing what you say builds self
- 14:17-trust.
- 14:18Without follow-through, goals remain ideas.
- 14:21And people, well, they kind of lose hope
- 14:25in you.
- 14:26They lose faith in you.
- 14:28Do what you said.
- 14:31Keep the promises to yourself.
- 14:33Integrity with yourself is one thing.
- 14:35But when you destroy it with others, that
- 14:38could be even worse.
- 14:40Stay organized, guys.
- 14:42Clarity creates efficiency.
- 14:44Organization helps you move faster with less stress.
- 14:48So why do we wanna move slower with
- 14:50more stress?
- 14:51Like, that doesn't seem to make a lot
- 14:53of sense that people do it.
- 14:56Respect your time.
- 14:57Your time is limited.
- 14:59Use it wisely and invest it where it
- 15:02matters most, okay?
- 15:06Where it matters most.
- 15:08And if you don't know where it matters
- 15:10most, you gotta figure out what's important in
- 15:13your life.
- 15:13I can't tell you that.
- 15:14You have to figure out what's important in
- 15:17your life and act upon it.
- 15:22Respect other's time.
- 15:25Being disciplined includes valuing others.
- 15:28Punctuality and preparation.
- 15:31Show respect.
- 15:34Had a client, oh, many, many years ago.
- 15:36The lady's not in business anymore.
- 15:37It was a medical company.
- 15:40And her company was supposed to open at,
- 15:43let's say we were meeting in the morning.
- 15:45It was nine o'clock.
- 15:47At this time, she didn't have any employees.
- 15:51And I come to her house, so it
- 15:53was no big deal because she was there.
- 15:58But a year or two later, when she
- 16:00grew her business, she thought it was okay
- 16:03to dismiss punctuality.
- 16:07I'm busy, I'm making money, I don't have
- 16:09time to be on time.
- 16:12So she did this to me once or
- 16:13twice.
- 16:17And the next time she did this, she
- 16:22got a bill.
- 16:24For the whole two hours, I waited for
- 16:27her.
- 16:29She almost had a heart attack.
- 16:31I said, when you tell me to come
- 16:32and to wait for you, I do.
- 16:34But the clock starts the moment I get
- 16:37in your door.
- 16:37I don't charge you travel time, but my
- 16:40clock starts billing you the moment I step
- 16:43in your door.
- 16:47Well, she was never late again.
- 16:52Avoid the shortcuts, guys.
- 16:54Shortcuts often cost more in the long run.
- 16:56They seem like an easy way, but they're
- 16:58not.
- 16:59Build it right, even if it takes longer
- 17:02to do, because chances are next time you
- 17:05won't have to do it.
- 17:06It'll be built solid.
- 17:08I'll give you another example.
- 17:09So this chair that I'm sitting on, and
- 17:11some of you might recall the story from
- 17:12several months ago, I was going to do
- 17:16the show, and all of a sudden, I
- 17:18was going to get on the chair, and
- 17:19the chair literally went down to the ground.
- 17:21Now, I knew the chair was going down,
- 17:22so I held the desk, and I kind
- 17:23of braced myself as the chair was going
- 17:25down.
- 17:26And the thing is, for about a year
- 17:28or two, I would tighten things up, but
- 17:30nothing was working.
- 17:32And we kept getting carpenters, and nobody knew
- 17:33what they were doing.
- 17:35And I knew that we had to put
- 17:36something in the chair to hold it, but
- 17:38everybody said, oh, that's not possible.
- 17:39Well, this guy knew exactly the type of
- 17:41bolt or flange that had to be put
- 17:43in there.
- 17:44And I got to tell you, and after
- 17:45I wiggle on the chair, the chair is
- 17:46stable.
- 17:47And he fixed the chair, let's see.
- 17:50We're in June right now.
- 17:52He fixed it around the 18th of April.
- 17:56So April 18th, April to May, May to
- 18:00June.
- 18:00We're almost two months.
- 18:01We've had a month.
- 18:02Normally, the chair would start falling apart in
- 18:04a month.
- 18:05I would say if the chair doesn't wiggle
- 18:06within six months, we're probably good.
- 18:08Stay committed, guys.
- 18:10Commitment keeps you moving when excitement fades.
- 18:13It is the backbone of the discipline engine.
- 18:17Track your progress.
- 18:19Measurement creates awareness.
- 18:21Awareness drives improvement and accountability.
- 18:25When we know that we're going to be
- 18:27accountable for something, we take more time.
- 18:31When other people know that they're going to
- 18:32be accountable for something, they're more conscientious, aren't
- 18:35they?
- 18:38Stay focused, guys.
- 18:40Under pressure, pressure reveals discipline.
- 18:44Stay calm, think clearly, and execute.
- 18:49If something's not right, do it again, right?
- 18:55When we know we made a mistake, there's
- 18:59no harm in redoing something.
- 19:02How many times have you done a job
- 19:03for a client, maybe, and something went wrong?
- 19:06Do you pass that off like that?
- 19:07No, you fix it.
- 19:12Even though you're like, they may never catch
- 19:13it, it's a reputation, it's an image.
- 19:18I'm not here to do shoddy work.
- 19:22A lot of people think they should just
- 19:23collect the gold and don't worry about it
- 19:26because nobody will ever figure it out.
- 19:27That's important to know.
- 19:29Build mental toughness.
- 19:32Growth requires resilience.
- 19:34Train your mind to handle challenges without quitting.
- 19:38I know that sounds like an impossibility, but
- 19:41trust me, ladies and gentlemen, you can do
- 19:43it.
- 19:44It's not gonna be easy, but I have
- 19:47faith in you that you can do it.
- 19:51Show up.
- 19:53Regardless of your mood, feelings are temporary.
- 19:58Discipline means showing up even when you don't
- 20:01feel like it.
- 20:06That's what successful people do.
- 20:08We all have feelings, we all have emotions,
- 20:09but we do what we need to do
- 20:12regardless of our feelings or emotions.
- 20:14Avoid burnout, guys.
- 20:17I should know, I wrote a book on
- 20:19it.
- 20:20Through structure, balance effort with recovery.
- 20:26Structure prevents exhaustion and it sustains performance.
- 20:33And you know what it also does?
- 20:34It actually gives us freedom.
- 20:48I think that's important to understand.
- 20:55And when you understand that, you know there's
- 21:00more.
- 21:07You have to realize what you're doing and
- 21:11you have to understand why you're doing it.
- 21:15I've said this to people many times.
- 21:17If you can't do what you want, it's
- 21:20because your why is not loud enough.
- 21:22I don't mean you're not screaming.
- 21:23I mean the reason, the passion behind what
- 21:26you're doing is not strong enough.
- 21:33It's not strong enough.
- 21:41It means something very, very important.
- 21:45Something that maybe you didn't know about.
- 21:50Something that maybe you were afraid to talk
- 21:55about, maybe.
- 22:07And I can tell you guys that a
- 22:09lot of times when you're at the cliff
- 22:13of doing something and you can't, it's not
- 22:16because you can't do it.
- 22:18It's because you sabotage yourself.
- 22:22You said to yourself, I can't.
- 22:25I tell clients this all the time.
- 22:27Just like Henry Ford said, if you believe
- 22:29you can't, you're right.
- 22:30If you believe you can, you're also right.
- 22:33So our words in our mind and what
- 22:37comes out of our lips affect our reality.
- 22:43It changes our chemical makeup at the moment.
- 22:49Take breaks intentionally.
- 22:52Rest is productive when planned.
- 22:56It helps you recharge and stay sharp.
- 22:57I'll give you an example.
- 22:58I was doing a hike with the guys
- 22:59the other day and I had an early
- 23:02morning.
- 23:02I started early.
- 23:04I didn't take a shower in the morning.
- 23:05I had breakfast, something light.
- 23:08And then I got out to the trail
- 23:11and I was there from about 10 30
- 23:14in the morning.
- 23:15I don't think I finished till 3 45.
- 23:18Then I went for a nice, what was
- 23:22it?
- 23:22It was a burrito.
- 23:26Actually, no, it was just a salad.
- 23:27It was what was in a burrito, but
- 23:28it was in a salad.
- 23:31Came home, took a shower.
- 23:33And I said to myself, you know what,
- 23:34John?
- 23:35I need to take a nap.
- 23:37I did a few things, took a two
- 23:39hour nap and I powered right through the
- 23:42rest of the evening.
- 23:43See, when you respect yourself like that, then
- 23:46I went to bed and I kept getting
- 23:48up every couple of hours.
- 23:50My body had plenty of energy.
- 23:53You know what, gentlemen?
- 23:54Another thing I want to tell you is
- 23:55finish what you start.
- 23:56You see, completion builds momentum.
- 23:58And a lot of people I know start
- 23:59something great but they never finish it.
- 24:03They give them some excuse, right?
- 24:07Is it time?
- 24:08Is it money?
- 24:09Is it knowledge?
- 24:11Any one of those can be resolved.
- 24:15Every finished task strengthens your discipline.
- 24:19Every finished task.
- 24:23Avoid overloading yourself.
- 24:24See, too much leads to inconsistency.
- 24:27Focus on what you can execute well.
- 24:31Stay disciplined in small things.
- 24:33Small actions define you.
- 24:35Discipline in little things leads to grand results.
- 24:39Build routines stably.
- 24:42Stability creates reliability.
- 24:45A stable routine keeps you progressing steadily.
- 24:49It's not about trying to be a hero.
- 24:51It's about doing something consistently every single day.
- 24:56Consistency and structure.
- 24:58You do it the same way every day
- 25:00and you're consistently doing it daily.
- 25:03Repeat, guys, what works.
- 25:06Success leaves clues.
- 25:08Identify what works and do it again and
- 25:11again consistently.
- 25:12Don't burn out.
- 25:15End strong.
- 25:16How you finish matters.
- 25:18Strong endings build confidence and prepare you for
- 25:22the next day.
- 25:25And the feeling you get, oh my gosh,
- 25:28it's incredible.
- 25:30You know, finishing that hike, coming back even
- 25:33though I was tired, I felt great.
- 25:37And that's what propels me back to do
- 25:39it again.
- 25:40Now, I've disciplined to do it, but I
- 25:42love the feeling, that tired feeling, that I
- 25:47get after the hike.
- 25:49It's a tired feeling, but it's a little
- 25:50bit of a rejuvenation as well.
- 25:53And ladies and gentlemen, this is how real
- 25:55success is built.
- 25:57It's not a magic formula, all right?
- 26:00There's work.
- 26:01Not in one moment, but in thousands of
- 26:04small, disciplined actions repeated daily.
- 26:09That's the key to success.
- 26:11Pretty easy, right?
- 26:13Why don't people do it?
- 26:16People don't have structure.
- 26:18People don't wanna be consistent.
- 26:19They think they're being boring.
- 26:21Take ownership, ladies and gentlemen.
- 26:23Stay consistent in your lives.
- 26:25Build your life with, what am I gonna
- 26:29say?
- 26:30Purpose.
- 26:32We have core values in our lives.
- 26:35Everything we do should align to our core
- 26:40values.
- 26:41If it does, that gives our life purpose
- 26:44and it gives us meaning, and it makes
- 26:46our why loud enough so we will do
- 26:49more things in life.
- 26:54We will do more things in life.
- 26:59And when that happens, it's like, oh my
- 27:02gosh, I have this amazing understanding now that
- 27:10I didn't know was even there before, right?
- 27:14And that's something that a lot of people
- 27:17don't realize.
- 27:19They don't realize that they've had the power,
- 27:22they've had the energy, that they've had everything
- 27:25they needed all along.
- 27:26You know what they needed?
- 27:28They needed belief.
- 27:29They needed the desire to really come up
- 27:33with discipline and consistency.
- 27:37And when you do that, your life is
- 27:41sure to change.
- 27:42Because ladies and gentlemen, discipline always wins, regardless
- 27:47of what other people tell you.
- 27:49Discipline's not overrated.
- 27:51Growth mindsets, own your life, success happens.
- 27:56And let's level up daily, everyone.
- 27:58Have a great one, be well, and check
- 27:59out BelieveMeAchieved.com.
- 28:01And let's start becoming successful.
