The Graveyard Confession: Stephen Downing and the Murder of Wendy Sewell
In September 1973, typist Wendy Sewell was beaten in Bakewell cemetery, Derbyshire, and 17-year-old groundsman Stephen Downing, who found her, signed a confession after hours of questioning without a caution or solicitor. He served 27 years before the Court of Appeal quashed his conviction in 2002, yet police later said he was the only suspect they could not eliminate. No one else has ever been charged, and her murder remains officially unsolved.
