- 0:10SPEAKER_02: I'm Jeff.
- 0:11SPEAKER_02: How's it going, Steve?
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: Jeff, it is going so well.
- 0:14SPEAKER_02: It is going so well.
- 0:15SPEAKER_02: You know, we had that pharma brute uh commercial last time, and they're back in again.
- 0:21SPEAKER_02: They were a little upset that we overcharged them, but then they realized, hey, we've been doing that all along.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: So they've said, oh, well, all right, we'll be good sports about it.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: So we got another one from them this time, and we got so many more listeners, and we've got an exciting guest tonight, Jeff.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: This podcast is going places.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: This podcast, we are going to hit it big, Jeff.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Wonderful.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: And uh just to kind of catch up here a little bit.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: Last week we did a call-in show.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: I thought that went really well.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: A couple people called in.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm not sure I really wanted them to have our number, but you know, mostly your wife and mine.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: But um, but overall, I thought that was really fun.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Maybe we should try to do that uh semi-regularly.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: And people, and if that's the case, people should get ready to call in.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: And like you said, follow the number.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: This the numbers what Steven Jeff Jeff Jeff Experience dot.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: The number to call is thieve and Jeff Experience Podcast.com.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: And yes, I know that's more than 10 numbers, but when it starts ringing, you can stop punching.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Just if it's ringing, it's good.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: So yes, I agree.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: I think we should do a a phone in show every now and again because it it just highlights how many new listeners we are getting.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, I had no idea my wife was listening.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: I was you know, I I may have to change the content a little bit.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but but yeah, but Jeff, it was great.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: But but but I digress, Jeff.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: Jeff, we've got not only a great sponsor, we have a very exciting guest.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: We have a guest that's going to teach us things tonight.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: We're gonna learn how some of these things that maybe we've seen, how they get built, how they get created, you know.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: I'm talking that our guest tonight designs board games.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Wow, I bet you didn't know that those things get designed, they don't just you know happen.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: So Milton Bradley is our guest.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Well, no, Milton Milton couldn't make it tonight, and Bradley couldn't either, but but but but we've got an exciting guest tonight.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: We have Carol Bingbach, who is a board game designer.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: Carol, welcome to the show.
- 2:27SPEAKER_05: Thank you for having me on.
- 2:28SPEAKER_05: I'm really excited to talk about board games today.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, that is Carol.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: So, so Carol, how did you get involved in designing board games?
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: How did that start for you?
- 2:39SPEAKER_05: Well, I've loved board games for years, and my local store has a uh a group that meets that designs board games and and we play each other's games and give each other feedback.
- 2:52SPEAKER_05: And so I started with just a couple of ideas and I started making board games.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: Are you uh are there any board games that you've produced or created that we would know of?
- 3:04SPEAKER_05: Uh well, I mean, that depends on how uh involved in board games you are.
- 3:08SPEAKER_05: Uh most people don't know about a lot of board games.
- 3:12SPEAKER_05: There are quite a lot of board games out there.
- 3:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, one of my board games that has gotten some acclaim is called uh Vincent.
- 3:20SPEAKER_05: And it's uh it's an art game.
- 3:23SPEAKER_05: It's an art game.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: And then it's like in the game, do you do you have to like match art or do you create art?
- 3:30SPEAKER_05: Well, it's you know, creating art would be a little difficult to package in a board game, but it does involve uh it involves the journey from being an unknown artist to being acclaimed at the end.
- 3:45SPEAKER_05: Uh, if you are acclaimed before you die, then you win.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Ooh, so and then I bet there aren't a lot of winners in that game either.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: Well, and Carol, excuse me, but you're sort of describing Steve and my career.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, here we are.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: We're just getting started and trying to get popular, trying to get famous, and probably won't actually achieve any stardom until we're dead.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: If then, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: See, Jeff, we won't see, we won't we won't achieve it when we're dead.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: No, it's you should be kind of careful sharing that with uh Kathy though, because then she may prematurely it's Carol.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: You know.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: I met my wife.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Kathy's a wife last week.
- 4:32SPEAKER_05: I thought you were talking about me.
- 4:33SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: Oh no, that's okay.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, if she hears that you know we'll become famous once we die, she might speed up the process a little bit.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: I think we should probably let it take force.
- 4:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that reminds me of another game of mine.
- 4:47SPEAKER_05: Another game of mine is called insurance.
- 4:49SPEAKER_05: And that one is where you have to get various policies before you die.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: Oh, cool, cool.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: That's kind of like, well, you know, that that's kind of like what what we did.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: We got some we got some insurance just in case that podcaster, you know, the the MMA fighter, the former community, just in case he sued us, we got we got a really expensive policy to protect us just in case that happened.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: So that's kind of what what we're we're kind of playing that game, Jeff.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: That's kind of cool.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Steve, I didn't get any insurance.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: Did you use you you have insurance?
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Well, well, well, no, remember we talked about you were gonna go get it.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: I was I was going to, but then I oh yeah, I you know what it was on my to-do list and I just forgot.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: So I'll make a note of that.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: Because you know, could could be, could be, but but but I digress, but but but Carol, so uh in designing games like this, do you do you have a strategy in mind?
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: Do you have an end in mind, or or do you just remind me of another game of mine?
- 5:50SPEAKER_05: It's called game design.
- 5:51SPEAKER_05: And you have to strategize in designing games so that you can make enough money to support yourself before you die.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: So it so it's kind of like the art game, except it's boards, right?
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: It's like games instead of paintings.
- 6:07SPEAKER_05: A little bit.
- 6:08SPEAKER_05: I mean, I wouldn't say it's derivative or anything.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: Oh no, no, no.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: Oh, I didn't know, I didn't mean to imply that, but but it's kind of the same.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: It's like if you want to play that concept of hey, I'm not gonna make it until long after my death.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: You could there are a couple different ways you could play that.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: That's kind of exciting.
- 6:26SPEAKER_04: That's my little secret.
- 6:28SPEAKER_04: Um, I didn't really want to talk about that.
- 6:31SPEAKER_04: Oh, oh, well, that's okay.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: Our our podcast listeners can really keep their mouths shut, can't they, Jeff?
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Oh, they yeah, both of them.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: They are so quiet.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: In fact, I don't think my wife's listening anymore, so you know, she won't even hear half the half the audience is gone.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there you go, it's gone.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: Um, Carol, what's the process in creating taking like going from the idea to actually going to market with uh um a game?
- 7:00SPEAKER_05: Well, um, you know, the way I've done it is I'll bring my idea to an artist friend that I work with, and we'll kind of workshop, you know, the look of the game and create a prototype.
- 7:14SPEAKER_05: So then you take that prototype and you bring it to the group and play it.
- 7:18SPEAKER_05: And the group gives feedback after playing it, and they tell you everything that they think is broken in the game, and that's a lot of things most of the time.
- 7:26SPEAKER_05: And you you take, you know, with a grain of salt, you take what they've given you and you make changes to the game until it plays as well as you want it to, or or in you know, when you meet your deadline, um, because you know, the publisher does want games as quickly as possible.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: So then you uh you you get the game published through the publisher, and then you publish the the Arata sheet so that all of the rules that you've messed up can be clarified uh by sending out that sheet.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, see I I know about a ratasheet because that was I I used to go to that grocery store.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: The uh Jose eratisheet had that that grocery down at the on 12th and uh was it 12th in Michigan, I think it was, wasn't it?
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: I used to go there.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: I remember that.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: But but oh but Carol, I got I I I have another I have another question on on designing on the process, on the the steps, on the path that you take on these board games.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: Because you know, most board games do have a path in the board, and so you're probably following a path when you design that path.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Do you come up with an idea and say, I'd like to add this piece, this this feature to this path?
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: And then do you roll dice to see if you can do it?
- 8:42SPEAKER_05: No, that's D and D, but I do sometimes actually go through a checklist of things that I've done just to make sure I haven't missed anything.
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: But oftentimes it's just like I have a bunch of pieces and I throw them out on a table, and then I kind of like look at them and I see where they've fallen, and then I apply that scheme of where things have fallen to whatever my new idea is.
- 9:07SPEAKER_05: That's one of the ways I've come up with games.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Well, that's that's almost like the Yi Ching.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: And everyone, you know, you remember Sam Yi Ching?
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: He I used to go to that grocery too.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say it sounded a little bit like Quirkle, but uh, I don't know if anybody else plays that game.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: But I wanted to go back to the thought process.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: So when you're going through everyday life and you're at the grocery store, you're at the library or wherever you are, uh is that where you capture the ideas?
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: So, for example, you're our guest here on our show.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: Does this show give you like a sense that maybe there's a game show from our show?
- 9:47SPEAKER_05: Oh, I think I could make a game based on this show.
- 9:50SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: Wow, that would be great.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: The Steve and Jeff game?
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, so we could and we could advertise it on the show.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: We could say, you know, get the home version of the Steve and Jeff podcast experience.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: Ooh, wow, I like that.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Gosh, if you were going to design a game around this show, gosh, what what what would happen in the show?
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: What would happen in the game?
- 10:11SPEAKER_05: I think that it would be something like the two of you try to get as many guests on the show as possible before you die.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: That is so accurate.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: My gosh, that game is so based in reality.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: That's exactly that's exactly it.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: That's great.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: Would would there be would the guests be like clue?
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: So it'd be kind of like how you know, in clue, there are suspects or there are you know certain places where like would it be all the people who have been guests on our show would be characters in this, or at least some of them?
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: And then and then we'd have to guess we'd say it'd be it's Carol Bingbach in the studio with the board in it.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: See, that's how that would work.
- 10:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:56SPEAKER_05: I mean, that's an option, sure.
- 10:59SPEAKER_05: Um, but you know, I don't tell you how to do podcasts.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, you know, we could use a little help, so maybe you should start to tell us how to do that.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Do you know how to do podcasts?
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because we've been looking for somebody who knew how to do it.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: Is that something you're good at?
- 11:14SPEAKER_05: I could probably design a game about creating a podcast.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: That'd be cool.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: I would play that game.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, yes.
- 11:22SPEAKER_05: Oh, there'd be a lot of buttons and switches and dial.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, I don't know.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: Uh that sounds advanced for me, and then all these audio things too, these these like you know, mixers and you know, did the edits and all that.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but that but that'd be cool though.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: We could actually play that on the podcast.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: We play the podcast game on the podcast.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Oh man, my head is spinning.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: I you know, yeah, which would be kind of cool.
- 11:48SPEAKER_05: That's a great idea, and a spinner, yeah.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: My head spins, yeah, yeah.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: And the spin like the center spinner could be like your head or your old nose.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, nobody's using your old nose, right?
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's true.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: That could be the spinner, my no, my old nose.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, Jeffrey Anston didn't want it, right?
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: So I mean, nobody's using it, right?
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, well, you know, you know, Jeff, we we we got a lot more to talk about with board games, but Jeff, I tell you, we we have a repeat sponsor tonight.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: Remember, you know, because I mentioned Farmer Bro, Farmer Brute, I'm sorry, farmer Brute, who uh, you know, and they uh they were a little upset uh because we did overcharge them, but uh, you know, then they they decided, well, we'll we'll stick with you for one more.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: And uh, so we we have a a message from Farmer Brute.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: So uh let's go to commercial.
- 12:37SPEAKER_03: Hey, all you big drinkers out there, you know who you are.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: You're the life of the party.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: You haven't had a driver's license in years.
- 12:46SPEAKER_03: You crush the National Institute of Health's drinks per week guide in a single evening.
- 12:51SPEAKER_03: Yes, you! Sure, your pain receptors are set on numb for at least the next decade, but are you getting the proper nutrition your body needs?
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: The nutrients you need to keep up that hectic drinking pace?
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: Healthy food just too much work?
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: And besides, it interferes with drinking?
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: Well, we made nutrition easy to take.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: It's all in new Vitacahul from PharmaBrute.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: You'll love Vitacah.
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: Yes, my word slurring friends.
- 13:17SPEAKER_03: Vitacahol packs all the vitamins you need into individually packaged shots that taste like what you love.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: And it comes in dozens of your favorite flavors.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: There's Scotch B12, vitamin D vodka for those days when you just can't face going out in the sun.
- 13:33SPEAKER_03: And of course, everyone's favorite, grain alcohol amino acids.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: I sure could potty before, but with vitacohall, I can drink all night and still look so bad precinct roll call the next morning.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: I used to pretend that it was just a water bottle until someone saw the gray goose label.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: But no more shame.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Now I pop vitacoh anytime, anywhere, and I feel great.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: No malpractice insurance company would touch me after my 15th lawsuit.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: But now I have no worries.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: I recommend Vitacoh to all my patients, and I take some occasionally myself.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: Now who could argue with those endorsements?
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: Plus, if you act now, we'll throw in, at a still-to-be-determined additional cost to you, the book that sold millions of copies under the table in bars.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: The classic, I'm not drunk, I'm for those times you have to explain yourself fast.
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: You'll learn such great excuses as I'm not drunk, I have uh in uh balance issues.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: I'm not drunk.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: I just came off the tilt-world ride.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: I'm not drunk, I'm I'm drunk.
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: And there are thousands more.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Take those 12 steps to your mobile phone and call your local grocery or pharmacy and ask them for Vitacahol from FarmerBrew.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: 30-day money-back guarantee, optional bail bond available too.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: So try Vitacohol.
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: It's the hair of the dog that should have bit you.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: Well, I don't know about you, Jeff, but I am excited to try some of that nutrition.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: My goodness, I'll probably wash it down with some, I don't know, maybe some fruit juice or something, but I don't think you're supposed to do that.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: That might be too much.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: Um, and Carol, I don't want to tell you how you to do your business, but um, you know, listening to these pharmaceutical commercials makes me wonder whether you've uh uh integrated um the use of drugs when people are playing games.
- 15:23SPEAKER_05: You know, in college, the drinking games are so much more fun to play a game when you're on drugs.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: Totally.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, I know the drinking game that the drinking games we used to do, you know, like if you saw Jennifer Aniston, you know, put her hand through her hair or what whatever, then you had to take a shot.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: Um, those were always very popular.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: They weren't board games, but they were very popular in college.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, I think this uh I think there's some potential here.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: And Steve, maybe this is a way to get back in good graces with the pharmaceutical companies, you know, by helping them reach out into the board game category.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, oh yeah.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: So maybe, maybe Carol, maybe Carol could design a game where every time you you take a step or every time something happens, you have to drop a pharmaceutical pill.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Well, they love that.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: Oh boy, I'd bet they'd sponsor that game.
- 16:14SPEAKER_05: I bet they'd have to take as many of the pharmaceutical pills as you can before you die.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Before you die, right.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: And and it might be one, you know, but yeah, like punch too.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: And and Carol, you weren't on the the uh show last week, but last week there was a product, it was a placebo, right?
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: Steve place, yes, it does absolutely nothing again.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: That's kind of the winner, right?
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: The winner is the one who ended up with the placebox, right?
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: And at the end of the day, whereas everybody else dies.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: I I love that idea.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: I think that's a great game, and it it's such a it'd be a good instructional game for kids, I think, too, wouldn't it?
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: Especially for kids.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, really teach them the right way to go about things, you know.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: But but it's it goes back to what we talked about last week, though.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: They've got to really reach out to that market, that zero to five with you know, gummies and things like that.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: Because those kids need to learn to play that game at a very young age because they're not gonna be able to, they won't be alive when they're older.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: Well, that's zero to five demographic, they got all the money, you know.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: That's everybody wants them.
- 17:21SPEAKER_05: I personally tend to go for the uh the teen to adult market.
- 17:26SPEAKER_05: Um teens are starting to come into money when they get their allowance, when they get any sort of birthday gifts and things like that.
- 17:34SPEAKER_05: And then adults, well, they have disposable income.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: They do.
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: Well, some do.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: I you know, I I think I know what that is.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: That's like when you have extra money.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: Hmm.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: But but but I digress.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: But but but yeah, so so are what what game are you working on now, Carol?
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: You've got to have a probably have a game in design or a game about to come out.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: What what exciting new game is is about to hit?
- 17:59SPEAKER_05: Well, this game is called death.
- 18:01SPEAKER_05: The idea is that you have to claim as many people who've died as you can before you die.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Wow, wow, that you know brilliant.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: That could, and you know, that that's the sort of game, you know.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: That the nice thing about that is that's the sort of game people play just you know on their own, but you you could add a board to it, you could add a competitive element to it.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: It's like you know, they say who's gonna be next in the in the the three club or whatever, the the next death, you know, and so we uh but I remember I remember growing up the gate.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: Does anybody remember the game life?
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, because you had that game, life and death.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: You could package the two together, sure, and you have the game of death we have everything covered, right?
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: Oh, I like that.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: I like that, and then instead of like the little the little pink and blue people that you put in the car in the game of life, this it'd be like they'd be in shrouds or something, right?
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: That'd be interesting, huh?
- 18:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you guys should join the game group that I'm in so that you can give feedback like this to them.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: Wow, could we could we join?
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: That sounds exciting.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: The more the merrier, you know, and then and then we then we'd be able to contribute to that erratic eat.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes, that's definitely part of it.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, they had great groceries over there.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: I really like that place.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: That was probably my favorite.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I really like that place.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: Well, Carol, you have uh what I really like about uh this guest with you, Carol, is that you know, people don't really play board games as much as they used to, not the traditional way.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: You know, though they they play variations of it, you know, games online and things like that.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: I I think there's a there's a market for you know a resurgence of board games.
- 19:50SPEAKER_05: Um and I think you'd be surprised there actually is quite a resurgence of board games, yeah.
- 19:56SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Well, I've maybe I've never been invited to play any of those games.
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: That could be you know part of the issue.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Maybe people think you'd be bored.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and Carol, is there any way you could come up with a board game that would make me more popular?
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: Because I I really could use that.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: Oh, that'd be tough.
- 20:14unknown: I don't know.
- 20:15SPEAKER_05: I'll work on it.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: It's a big challenge.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but you know, you know, though, it Jeff Jeff brings up a good point with all the online things with it like Wordle.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: Wordle has become so popular.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Is that do you see that as a potential threat that maybe like artificial intelligence is going to take over the the board game world?
- 20:34SPEAKER_05: That's a pretty big leap you just made there.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: Oh well, I you know that's that's that's really what I think the good podcasters do.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: They make those leaps, they jump, they they fling forward, they throw themselves right into it.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it sounds like too much physical activity for me.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: I'd rather just sit at home doing a board game.
- 20:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's that's kind of how I live.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: Uh in fact, you know, a lot of my fantasies probably are already lived out through board games and things like that.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: I I think that's a really great way to experience life through these kinds of games.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: And death, as yeah, Carol has pointed out.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: Well, it it and maybe maybe there's maybe there's a game where we have to like a kind of a variation on the the game where you you get as many guests on.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: Maybe there's a podcast board game where we try to get as many sponsors as we can before we die.
- 21:34SPEAKER_05: That reminds me of a game I've made.
- 21:36SPEAKER_05: It's called Sponsors.
- 21:37SPEAKER_05: Ah, yeah.
- 21:38SPEAKER_05: Sponsors.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: See, uh, I was getting a sponsor vibe.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, there you go.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's it.
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: She's she's she's done it already.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: Look at that.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: Look at that.
- 21:47SPEAKER_05: So I've got 147 board games.
- 21:49SPEAKER_05: It's quite a lot of games.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: Wow, wow.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: Have you always had that talent, Carol?
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, you just come up with these gems, what appears to be off the top of your head, uh, which Probably another game.
- 22:02SPEAKER_05: What I found is actually it's not hard when you have wealth, and when you start with your first game and you get money coming in from that game, well, it just keeps going after that.
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: It's getting that first game is the hard part, but then I had somebody sponsoring me, so it wasn't that hard.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: Was it Milton Bradley?
- 22:23SPEAKER_05: No, no, it was an angel investor who wants to remain anonymous.
- 22:28SPEAKER_05: So yeah.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: Are they are they by any chance involved in the pharmaceutical industry?
- 22:34SPEAKER_05: I can't tell.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: Are they involved in like death?
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: Because I've noticed a lot of the games are like you do something before you die.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: Is it like a funeral home that sponsored you?
- 22:47SPEAKER_05: No, I think that's part of my deep-seated need to be successful before I die.
- 22:53SPEAKER_05: That's probably wow.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: I you know, I think that's the germ, that's the nugget, that's the start to any great art is you want to do that before you die.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: You know, I well, and I think if if if like Carol, that my motivation is to be successful before I die, see if I can live a long time.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: Well, I you know, we're already old, Jeff, and uh I I think I think that proves the theory.
- 23:27SPEAKER_05: So if you're trying to be successful before you die to win the game, just know you can lose.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: Oh wow, that's true.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: Because board games have winners and they have losers too.
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: Is there a board game?
- 23:43SPEAKER_02: Do you know of a board game where everybody wins?
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: No, see, see, they all they all have somebody losing, right?
- 23:52SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 23:52SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, there's cooperative games.
- 23:54SPEAKER_05: I'm just saying, like, not everybody can win, there has to be a chance to lose, otherwise, it's not a game.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: It's it's just like a podcast or something, right?
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, and it makes it makes total sense.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: That's kind of the way I go through life.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Instead of you know, celebrating success, I celebrate other people's failures.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: And if if you're if you don't have people who are failing, then how do you really know you're successful?
- 24:21SPEAKER_05: That reminds me of the game I made called Schadenfreude, yes, yeah.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Oh, you know, I used to go to that place too.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: Schadenfreude, they had they had the best schnitzel.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, that was so good.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: It was up on Lincoln Avenue, you remember?
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: Anyway, but I digress.
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 24:35SPEAKER_05: Oh no, it's just a game where you celebrate other people's failures.
- 24:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: Oh gosh, I've been an amateur player of that for years.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness, I was doing a little bit earlier today, in fact.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness.
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: Me too.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, and uh so I was uh, as you know, Carol, because I think I think maybe Mark, our producer, may have set up this interview originally.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: He's also interested in uh in board games as well.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: I know that he uh I think he wanted to partner with Steve on on a board game.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: I think he mentioned something about like the Steve and Mark show board game, which I'm not sure why I would be left out, but I think I think he wanted to do something like that.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: Maybe it was SM board game or some something to that effect.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: Did he he didn't see your medical records, did he?
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he may have.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: I I actually haven't seen my medical records yet, Steve, but but that's probably for another podcast.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: No rush.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: But good idea to have a backup plan in case uh, you know, I I have to go back to my old job of not doing anything.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, did it pay well board games?
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: I mean, if if not doing anything pays well, then you know, hey, sounds pretty good.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: I've worked very hard my whole life to get to that point.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: So yeah, wow, looking forward to it.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: Well, Carol, this has been fascinating.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: You're a wonderful guest, and uh you've given me so much to think about.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: And uh now if we wanted to invest in you said that you have yes, you have investors, right?
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: Uh what kind of money are we talking about to invest in and what would that include?
- 26:18SPEAKER_05: I'm pleased to take whatever you want to invest and then I'll turn it around and no time, no time flat.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: Wow, we don't have any money.
- 26:26SPEAKER_05: I somehow figured that.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, if if we if we sell a couple more pharmaceutical ads, we could probably invest something.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: Or if the insurance policies pay off after we're gone, you know, then you got that.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: Or wait, yeah, yeah.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: See if the insurance pays off and we're dead, then we'll be famous after we're dead.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: See, and we can win that architect.
- 26:45SPEAKER_05: That is that is a win condition, as long as nobody else is more famous than you are.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: God, I love the way she thinks.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, there is that there is that MMA guy, that comedian, MMA guy, you know.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: Is he still around?
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: I think I you know, I I don't know.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: He doesn't call me anymore.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know why.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: Maybe it was our last call didn't go so well, you know.
- 27:08unknown: You know, I don't know.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: Could be, yeah.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: But I digress.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: But Carol, uh, listen, we're running a little low on time, but but you've been just a great guest, and we'd love to have you back.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: And and you know, maybe, maybe you could be a sponsor for some of your your board games.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: You could you could do a commercial for us someday.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: What do you think?
- 27:28SPEAKER_05: That sounds pretty good.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: Cool, cool.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: And then and then yeah, when then and then she could buy a commercial and then we could invest in the game with the money she pays us for the commercial.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 27:39SPEAKER_05: Win win.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: That's that's a beautiful thing.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: And Carol for being on our show.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: We have a uh uh you know the the home game versus, but maybe you could create one for us and then we could give it to you.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we can give you an IOU today.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: We'll give we'll give you a we'll give you a voucher for the the home version of the Steve and Jeff Experience podcast that you can.
- 28:02SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: That sounds wonderful.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: And as soon as you create it, you you can keep it.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: Hey, so how's it save on delivery charges?
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: Well perfect.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: Jeff, thanks again, Carol, for coming on the show.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: And uh, Jeff, we'll be back next time with with another guest.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: And I am looking forward to it.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: We'll probably, I don't know, we'll get the pharma guys again, but we'll probably get somebody to be a sponsor.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: So look out great.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: Thank you, Carol.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: I think
