- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 2: The Rex was not chasing the Jeep. Murray!
- 0:08Speaker 3: Murray, you there?
- 0:10Speaker 2: You love sandwiches, huh? Let's go to 80. His name
- 0:14Speaker 2: is Bo.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Wow.
- 0:16Speaker 2: That's prime time, baby. I had a crush on Betty Rubble.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 1: to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman was black.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He cost them the game last night. Although they won
- 0:28Speaker 1: the game. You're listening to Stugatz and Company. Jessica Smetana
- 0:33Speaker 1: is with us. She hosts the College Football Happy Hour
- 0:36Speaker 1: on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts with our
- 0:38Speaker 1: friend Lucy Rodim. I was greeted by Jess today by
- 0:43Speaker 1: her saying to me, I need to get back to
- 0:45Speaker 1: a concrete jungle.
- 0:47Speaker 2: What is going on with you, Jess?
- 0:50Speaker 4: Stugatz, the fall allergy is here.
- 0:52Speaker 5: I'm in Chicago right now, and there's some plant outside
- 0:55Speaker 5: my window that is just killing me. And this happens...
- 0:58Speaker 5: Every fall. And so I'm so excited for football season
- 1:01Speaker 5: to start. I'm excited for the crispness in the air,
- 1:03Speaker 5: but then like clockwork, my throat starts getting itchy and
- 1:06Speaker 5: I just, I got to get back to New York.
- 1:08Speaker 2: This is too much, too much nature. How was your
- 1:11Speaker 2: week zero? It was great.
- 1:14Speaker 5: I watched every game laying flat on my back on
- 1:17Speaker 5: the floor in front of the TV.
- 1:19Speaker 4: I love a floor lay.
- 1:20Speaker 5: It's nice that there were, you know, only eight FBS
- 1:23Speaker 5: games and a lot of them kind of had their
- 1:25Speaker 5: own window. So there wasn't too much overlapping except for
- 1:28Speaker 5: a little bit in the afternoon, but I got to,
- 1:30Speaker 5: I got to soak it all in.
- 1:31Speaker 4: It was really nice.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Uh, Mikey, do you like a floor lay?
- 1:34Speaker 1: I mean, maybe in my twenties, tough to get up.
- 1:40Speaker 4: It feels good on my back.
- 1:43Speaker 5: I was also, I was at a wedding Friday night.
- 1:45Speaker 5: So I, I was like in full potato mode on Saturday.
- 1:48Speaker 5: And it just felt, it feels good to just be
- 1:50Speaker 5: flat on your back with like a pillow, just looking
- 1:52Speaker 5: straight up at the TV.
- 1:54Speaker 3: It is a crime that we have gotten this far
- 1:55Speaker 3: in the podcast without mentioning that North Carolina beat TCU.
- 1:58Speaker 2: It's been two minutes for crying out loud. I mean,
- 2:01Speaker 2: Jesus Christ. What happened? Jess, did Carolina win or did
- 2:06Speaker 2: TCU lose?
- 2:09Speaker 4: I love a game when it's both.
- 2:10Speaker 5: And also TCU lost and Carolina won, but also UNC
- 2:15Speaker 5: also kind of lost and TCU kind of won.
- 2:17Speaker 4: It was just a little bit of everything. It was
- 2:19Speaker 4: a hodgepodge. It was a disaster.
- 2:20Speaker 5: 15 to 10 final score. But I have to say,
- 2:24Speaker 5: Taylor and I, we called this. We were texting each
- 2:27Speaker 5: other Saturday morning. And he said, hey, people need to
- 2:30Speaker 5: pump the brakes on this TCU team. They're acting like
- 2:33Speaker 5: North Carolina's about to play the Georgia Bulldogs.
- 2:35Speaker 4: And I said, you know what, Taylor? You're absolutely right.
- 2:38Speaker 4: This is TCU's quarterback.
- 2:39Speaker 5: His first game in FBS, he was a Harvard quarterback
- 2:42Speaker 5: for the last four years. The spread's only 7.5 to
- 2:45Speaker 5: begin with. Like, it's projected to be a one-score, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 5: barely over a one-score game. And it's in Ireland, and
- 2:52Speaker 5: the weather is going to be nasty, which it was.
- 2:55Speaker 4: And lo and behold, me and Taylor, we were right. Mm-hmm.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I thought Taylor had something there. He wanted to talk
- 3:00Speaker 1: Carolina football. He was leaning into the mic. How was
- 3:03Speaker 1: your week, Zero Taylor? Oh, I am absolutely buzzing.
- 3:07Speaker 3: You know, you really take a week zero game for
- 3:10Speaker 3: granted because once your team wins, you are buzzing the
- 3:14Speaker 3: rest of the day. The Cubs in Dublin were rocking.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Carolina put the dub in Dublin. I heard the people
- 3:20Speaker 3: in the streets singing, you'll never sing that. You'll never
- 3:23Speaker 3: sing that. Aer Lingus college football classic champions. You'll never
- 3:28Speaker 3: sing that.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Do you wish you went, Taylor? They invited you to go,
- 3:32Speaker 4: and you didn't go.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Had a free trip. He did. You're right.
- 3:35Speaker 1: No.
- 3:36Speaker 3: I had a little bit of FOMO because I saw
- 3:38Speaker 3: a bunch of my teammates there, but then the game started,
- 3:41Speaker 3: and I saw it pouring rain, and it kind of
- 3:43Speaker 3: just reminded me that I'm so out on these Ireland games.
- 3:45Speaker 3: It's bad weather. It's bad football. Everybody's slipping everywhere. And
- 3:49Speaker 3: then you have a long flight.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Yeah, but you're 1-0.
- 3:51Speaker 3: It would have been worth it just to see Belichick
- 3:54Speaker 3: hoist that trophy up there. It's going to look so
- 3:56Speaker 3: good in Chapel Hill.
- 3:57Speaker 1: This is going to sound strange to you, but I
- 3:59Speaker 1: think that's the biggest win of Bill Belichick's storied career.
- 4:02Speaker 2: That's what people are saying.
- 4:04Speaker 5: Wait, so not just the biggest win of his college
- 4:07Speaker 5: football coaching career? Because I think that is unequivocally true.
- 4:10Speaker 5: Because last year they only beat... Charlotte, Richmond, Syracuse, and Stanford.
- 4:13Speaker 5: But you're saying bigger than any of his Super.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Bowls, too.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Oddly, on a resume that has six Super Bowl victories
- 4:19Speaker 1: as a head coach, I think his top two victories
- 4:22Speaker 1: are outside of the Super Bowl. I think number one– well,
- 4:25Speaker 1: number two is the tuck rule, and number one came
- 4:28Speaker 1: on Saturday in Dublin.
- 4:29Speaker 2: How about that?
- 4:32Speaker 4: I love it.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Is he back?
- 4:34Speaker 4: I mean, I'm with you.
- 4:36Speaker 5: For someone who needed a good– a good PR moment.
- 4:40Speaker 5: This win came at a necessary time. Cause if he
- 4:42Speaker 5: got his ass kicked against TCU again to open the season,
- 4:47Speaker 5: it would have been well, but you know what actually
- 4:50Speaker 5: still got another reason why I saw this coming because
- 4:52Speaker 5: as soon as they put Mike Lombardi on leave, I
- 4:54Speaker 5: was like, I think this is a good thing for
- 4:56Speaker 5: the team. Like I feel a lot better now about
- 4:58Speaker 5: how things are going to go. And I don't know
- 4:59Speaker 5: so far want to know. I think I was right
- 5:01Speaker 5: about that one too.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Addition by subtraction. Exactly. Yeah. Taylor, how do you feel?
- 5:07Speaker 1: Because I had Carolina 11-1. We did the win-loss on Carolina, Jess. Well,
- 5:13Speaker 1: I mean, who's laughing now?
- 5:14Speaker 4: I am.
- 5:15Speaker 2: How about that?
- 5:17Speaker 4: They're the best team.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Well, I was going to say best team in the ACC,
- 5:20Speaker 5: but Florida State and Virginia also played on Saturday, so.
- 5:22Speaker 4: I can't say that.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Taylor, did you see anything outside of the defense, which
- 5:26Speaker 1: was great, but I don't know how good TCU is.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Did you see anything that's encouraging to you moving forward
- 5:33Speaker 1: for Carolina football?
- 5:34Speaker 3: The most encouraging sign outside of the defense that pitches
- 5:37Speaker 3: a shutout from the second quarter on The upgrade Carolina
- 5:42Speaker 3: made at the offensive coordinator position going from Freddie Kitchens
- 5:45Speaker 3: to Bobby Petrino, it was pouring rain in Dublin, and
- 5:48Speaker 3: UNC still threw for more yards than in any game
- 5:51Speaker 3: last season. Billy Edwards Jr., that man can sling it.
- 5:56Speaker 4: I mean, also a quarterback upgrade, I would say. But
- 5:59Speaker 4: I think TCU is probably fine. I looked at their schedules, Dugatz.
- 6:03Speaker 5: They don't have to play against a conference opponent for
- 6:06Speaker 5: another month. They play UCF at the end of September.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:10Speaker 5: I think for as much doom and gloom as they're feeling,
- 6:12Speaker 5: and they should, because they had rancid vibes going into
- 6:16Speaker 5: this game with the reports of a player dismissal and
- 6:18Speaker 5: a locker room fight and Sonny Dykes banning the Star-Telegram
- 6:22Speaker 5: and revoking their credentials. They had some really nasty vibes
- 6:25Speaker 5: going into the season, but they'll have a few weeks.
- 6:27Speaker 5: They play Grambling next week.
- 6:29Speaker 4: They get a bye, and then Arkansas State, I think.
- 6:31Speaker 4: So I'm not that, I don't know. I'm not spelling
- 6:35Speaker 4: the N for TCU yet.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Jess, could you make the argument that the biggest winner
- 6:39Speaker 3: in Week 0 was Josh Hoover, who transfers from TCU
- 6:43Speaker 3: to Indiana? Because now I'm looking at Josh Hoover a
- 6:46Speaker 3: little differently, being like, I think this guy's going to
- 6:48Speaker 3: win the Heisman now.
- 6:50Speaker 5: Josh, yeah, they were TCU. They were just Josh Hoover
- 6:53Speaker 5: merchants the last couple seasons.
- 6:55Speaker 4: I mean, that's a good point.
- 6:56Speaker 5: I would take it a step further, though, Taylor, in
- 6:58Speaker 5: terms of biggest winner and go to a different ACC
- 7:01Speaker 5: team and say Virginia– The Cavaliers, a team that played
- 7:05Speaker 5: in the ACC championship game last year that I don't
- 7:08Speaker 5: think anyone really respected coming into this season, beat the
- 7:11Speaker 5: crap out of NC State on Saturday in a conference
- 7:13Speaker 5: game that was supposed to be in Brazil. Ended up
- 7:16Speaker 5: not being able to sell enough tickets or whatever, so
- 7:18Speaker 5: they moved it to Charlottesville. And I don't know, the
- 7:20Speaker 5: vibes are pretty bad for Dave Doran and NC State.
- 7:24Speaker 5: to begin with, because they've just been kind of a
- 7:26Speaker 5: mess the last few years. And they only went four
- 7:28Speaker 5: and four in the conference last year, but Virginia looked really,
- 7:31Speaker 5: really good. And I know how to pronounce their quarterback's name.
- 7:34Speaker 5: I don't know about you guys, but I can say
- 7:37Speaker 5: per Bula.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Some people ESPN play by play. They don't know how
- 7:44Speaker 4: to say it, but I know how to say it.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Well, how do you say it again? Cause it's a
- 7:47Speaker 2: tough one.
- 7:47Speaker 5: It is.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Per Bula.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Per Bula. Yeah, it's a tough one. It is. Go ahead, Taylor.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Now I'm second guessing myself.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I know, but I know they're in my observations. It's
- 7:57Speaker 2: haunting me. Go ahead.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Jess, with that Virginia win, you could not have scripted
- 8:02Speaker 3: a better opening week zero for North Carolina fans where
- 8:06Speaker 3: you have the upset with TCU and then you have
- 8:09Speaker 3: NC State getting dragged. Because to me, an NC State
- 8:13Speaker 3: loss is the equivalent of a Carolina win. So you
- 8:16Speaker 3: double dip there.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Well, you must have had actually not too bad of
- 8:20Speaker 5: a season last year because they were both bad.
- 8:23Speaker 4: So at least you got a half right.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Now he's 2-0. I mean, how about that?
- 8:28Speaker 3: Finished 500 last year probably.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Taylor, on the list of topics here, I have no
- 8:35Speaker 1: idea what this is, but I am handed a list
- 8:38Speaker 1: of things that people on the show are interested in
- 8:40Speaker 1: talking about. And one of Taylor's topics is Taylor's Irish
- 8:44Speaker 1: drinking song. Jess, are you familiar with this song? Do
- 8:47Speaker 1: you know what he's talking about?
- 8:49Speaker 4: No, I have no idea what this is going to be,
- 8:52Speaker 4: but I'm eager to find out.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Okay. What do you got, Taylor?
- 8:55Speaker 3: So this song is close your eyes and picture you're
- 8:59Speaker 3: in Dublin. You're leaving the TCU North Carolina game.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:04Speaker 3: You stop by the local pub. There's a fella in
- 9:08Speaker 3: the pub.
- 9:09Speaker 2: A fella.
- 9:10Speaker 3: And he's on top of the bar and he's getting
- 9:12Speaker 3: everybody to sing a song. And then that's what this was. Oh,
- 9:19Speaker 3: Bill sawed off for Dublin with his hoodie and his frown.
- 9:22Speaker 3: He brought the heels from Chapel Hill to shake that
- 9:25Speaker 3: Irish town. The horned frogs came to meet him, all
- 9:28Speaker 3: dressed in purple hue. But Bill had come for one thing,
- 9:31Speaker 3: to show what the heels could do. They said the
- 9:34Speaker 3: man was getting old, they said his time was through.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Then Bill went off to Ireland and beat the hell
- 9:40Speaker 3: out of TCU. They called the team a laughing stock,
- 9:42Speaker 3: nobody gave a chance. They took the fight right to
- 9:45Speaker 3: the frogs and did an Irish dance. They counted out Bibela.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Check and said he would go in this. Well, you
- 9:52Speaker 3: could kiss my Tar Heel ass while I go drink
- 9:54Speaker 3: a Guinness. A quarterback from Maryland. He's over six feet tall.
- 9:59Speaker 3: He said the heel. in ireland his name is billy
- 10:01Speaker 3: football they said his coach was finished his legacy was
- 10:05Speaker 3: done he left lombardi in the states and then he
- 10:08Speaker 3: finally won but trino called the offense oh bill controlled
- 10:12Speaker 3: the d The Frogs came in as favorites, but that
- 10:15Speaker 3: meant shit to me. They crossed the sea as underdogs
- 10:19Speaker 3: with everybody sure. That TCU would roll the heels while
- 10:22Speaker 3: 1510 says more. The time for laughing's over. Coach Bill
- 10:26Speaker 3: has got his team. When Carolina comes to town, they're
- 10:30Speaker 3: gonna cause a scene. I hope you had your fun.
- 10:33Speaker 3: I mean it sincerely. You woke the sleeping giant. Next stop,
- 10:37Speaker 3: the CF.
- 10:41Speaker 6: P.
- 10:45Speaker 2: You winced at the F, Jess.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 10:49Speaker 2: That was so long, but it kept going.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Yes, that's the song Taylor would have been singing had
- 10:56Speaker 1: he taken someone up on a free trip to Dublin, Ireland.
- 11:00Speaker 4: True. A mistake that you should not make again. You
- 11:04Speaker 4: missed out.
- 11:04Speaker 2: It was great. Go ahead, Mikey.
- 11:06Speaker 6: I believe they say shite.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Can you isolate the final five seconds of that song?
- 11:15Speaker 2: Can you do that? We're just winced.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Whoever that was singing kind of lost his accent there.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Right, right, right. Yeah, he definitely peters out when he
- 11:26Speaker 4: has to hold a note. I've noticed that. I think
- 11:29Speaker 4: I've heard him sing other songs before where that's been
- 11:31Speaker 4: an issue.
- 11:32Speaker 6: He used the accent when he needed it to rhyme something,
- 11:34Speaker 6: and then he didn't, so he changed it back.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it was kind of a thing.
- 11:38Speaker 2: That's a heady play. Can you isolate the end or no?
- 11:43Speaker 2: You can't do that? Okay, hold on.
- 11:44Speaker 4: The Guinness rhyme was.
- 11:46Speaker 3: You woke the sleeping giant. Next stop, the C. F. P. F.
- 11:52Speaker 3: The pubs, man.
- 11:59Speaker 2: The pubs were rocking. You didn't want to try that again?
- 12:03Speaker 2: They were rocking. You weren't there. I mean.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Jess, I thought USC looked pretty good over the weekend.
- 12:11Speaker 2: What did you think?
- 12:12Speaker 4: Oh, my God, Stugatz.
- 12:13Speaker 5: The the crowd attendance discourse has been, it honestly, it
- 12:20Speaker 5: makes me like miss Miami a little bit because it
- 12:23Speaker 5: reminds me of the arguments that we'd have over the
- 12:25Speaker 5: Miami home attendance and the Marlins home attendance because USC,
- 12:30Speaker 5: I don't know if you saw the pictures, they didn't
- 12:32Speaker 5: have a lot of fans in the Coliseum for kickoff
- 12:34Speaker 5: against San Jose state in week zero, which I should
- 12:37Speaker 5: remind you was the game that they had to replace
- 12:39Speaker 5: the Notre Dame game with because they, canceled the Notre
- 12:42Speaker 5: Dame series after they were about to announce an extension
- 12:45Speaker 5: for the next two years that would have done like
- 12:47Speaker 5: the typical October, November thing. So then they had to
- 12:49Speaker 5: schedule San Jose State in week zero and apparently it
- 12:54Speaker 5: was very hot in LA. So not a lot of
- 12:56Speaker 5: people went and it was a San Jose State game,
- 12:58Speaker 5: not a Notre Dame game. So it was not as
- 13:00Speaker 5: interesting of a draw as a Notre Dame game, I suppose.
- 13:04Speaker 5: So they didn't have a lot of fans there. They
- 13:06Speaker 5: did say the attendance was 50,000 people, which I, is
- 13:11Speaker 5: Marlins math.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:12Speaker 5: And that made me, that made me nostalgic for South
- 13:15Speaker 5: Florida a little bit, but then the, the school put
- 13:19Speaker 5: out a statement, which I thought was crazy. You did
- 13:21Speaker 5: not need to put out a statement for this because
- 13:23Speaker 5: they were just getting slammed.
- 13:24Speaker 4: So you guys, this turned into like a, this.
- 13:26Speaker 5: Turned into like a West coast versus Southeast argument and
- 13:31Speaker 5: like a coastal elite versus, um, fly over country argument.
- 13:35Speaker 5: Like there was just like bickering nonstop between all these
- 13:38Speaker 5: bickering USC fans and.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Beat reporters and other college football fans. It was nonsense.
- 13:43Speaker 5: But USC put out a statement that said, we understand
- 13:46Speaker 5: the factors that impacted Saturday's attendance. We have high expectations
- 13:51Speaker 5: and a premier home schedule this season. And we know
- 13:53Speaker 5: the competitive advantage and electric Coliseum atmosphere can provide our program.
- 13:57Speaker 5: We thank our fans who showed up Saturday and look
- 13:58Speaker 5: forward to seeing increased attendance the rest of the season.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Right.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Again, you didn't need to put out a statement. Just
- 14:04Speaker 4: let it, let it, let it. Leave it there.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Move on. Right.
- 14:08Speaker 4: You're obviously going to sell out the Oregon game. Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Like we just leave it there.
- 14:12Speaker 1: You're shining light on a on a terrible situation. It's
- 14:15Speaker 1: a stupid thing to do. It doesn't require a statement.
- 14:19Speaker 1: That city. Here are the two factors. Terrible fans at
- 14:23Speaker 1: San Jose State. That city does not deserve L.A. A
- 14:27Speaker 1: good premier college football program. They won't support it. They'll
- 14:31Speaker 1: support it when it's Pete Carroll and Matt Leinart and
- 14:34Speaker 1: Reggie Bush. But if they're average or just very good,
- 14:38Speaker 1: no one's coming to their games.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Period. End of discussion. Get college football out of LA.
- 14:45Speaker 2: How about that?
- 14:48Speaker 4: I love it.
- 14:48Speaker 5: I mean, yeah, that's the, that's kind of what this
- 14:50Speaker 5: argument turned into was, is LA a good sports town?
- 14:53Speaker 5: And there were a lot of LA fans who were like,
- 14:55Speaker 5: people love the Dodgers and the Lakers. And it's like, well,
- 14:57Speaker 5: college football is a little bit different than the Dodgers
- 14:59Speaker 5: and the Lakers, but also college football, you only have like.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Six home games a year.
- 15:03Speaker 5: So to have this few fans at one of those
- 15:07Speaker 5: few games as one of those small number of games is,
- 15:10Speaker 5: is kind of surprising. And then there was the weather argument,
- 15:13Speaker 5: which like, yeah, it's hot in other places. And also
- 15:15Speaker 5: you guys wanted to play Notre Dame in week zero.
- 15:17Speaker 5: So that excuse does not really work. I don't blame
- 15:21Speaker 5: anyone for not going. Cause it was apparently really hot
- 15:24Speaker 5: and yes, it is San Jose state, but, I imagine
- 15:26Speaker 5: if Lincoln Riley was having a better career so far
- 15:30Speaker 5: at USC, there would be more people there for the
- 15:32Speaker 5: home opener. But also I don't think he would have
- 15:34Speaker 5: canceled the Notre Dame series if that were the case,
- 15:36Speaker 5: because they would be winning that series and they haven't been.
- 15:39Speaker 5: And that's part of the reason why he wanted to
- 15:41Speaker 5: move it and then ultimately cancel it.
- 15:42Speaker 2: By the way, Miami, not much better. It's hot everywhere
- 15:45Speaker 2: right now. It's August. Okay.
- 15:47Speaker 1: It's going to be hot in Tuscaloosa. It's going to
- 15:49Speaker 1: be hot in Austin, Texas. And I guarantee you against
- 15:51Speaker 1: bad teams. And I guarantee you a packed house, packed house.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Although Texas plays Ohio State, don't they?
- 15:59Speaker 4: I think that's week three, though.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Texas State this week.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Oh, Texas, Texas State.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Wow. Pac-12.
- 16:04Speaker 2: In-state rival.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Texas State.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Wildcats.
- 16:07Speaker 5: Yeah, there's a lot of, like, flyover state bashing. Like, well,
- 16:13Speaker 5: of course people are going to those Big Ten games.
- 16:16Speaker 4: There's nothing to do there. And it's like, okay, well,
- 16:19Speaker 4: there's also.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Like, 13 million fewer people around in, in driving distance.
- 16:24Speaker 5: But the reason why I compare it to Miami is
- 16:27Speaker 5: because it's kind of a similar vibe where it's like, look,
- 16:30Speaker 5: if they're not playing someone that is top notch, I'm
- 16:33Speaker 5: not getting in traffic.
- 16:34Speaker 4: I'm not getting in traffic for that team.
- 16:36Speaker 5: And I think that's a big reason behind Miami's issues
- 16:39Speaker 5: at times is. Even when they're good, they don't have
- 16:41Speaker 5: great attendance for the lower-tier matchups. But I think the
- 16:45Speaker 5: big reason is I'm not getting in my car and sitting.
- 16:49Speaker 4: On I-95 for much, especially for Bethune-Cookman.
- 16:52Speaker 2: I mean, on a Saturday, it's an hour drive from campus.
- 16:55Speaker 2: It's ridiculous.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Oh, it's ridiculous.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Texas State's in the Pac-12 now?
- 17:00Speaker 2: Did I call them the Wildcats? Yeah, the Bobcats. The Bobcats.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I knew they were a cat. I mean.
- 17:07Speaker 4: I think if you gave Stugatz.
- 17:08Speaker 5: 50 guesses, he probably couldn't name the Pac-12 teams this year.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Wow.
- 17:15Speaker 2: You want to try? Should we?
- 17:18Speaker 4: I mean, I got nowhere to be.
- 17:19Speaker 2: A Pac-12 team. So is UCLA still in the Pac-12? Incorrect.
- 17:26Speaker 4: No, they're in the Big Ten.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Jesus, college football has gotten to shit.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Washington.
- 17:34Speaker 5: No.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Close san jose state close hawaii washington state ah the
- 17:51Speaker 1: cougars how about that.
- 17:53Speaker 6: San jose state was close but it was close it
- 17:56Speaker 6: feels like they should be in.
- 17:58Speaker 5: It not a jose yeah you're close.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Replace the middle word in San Jose State with another school.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of another San something state. San
- 18:10Speaker 1: Diego State.
- 18:11Speaker 4: There you go.
- 18:12Speaker 2: How about that? The Aztecs. That's all I got. Nailed it.
- 18:17Speaker 2: I named two.
- 18:19Speaker 4: What you got?
- 18:20Speaker 2: What you got?
- 18:24Speaker 4: Taylor, do you know the rest of them?
- 18:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like.
- 18:27Speaker 4: We're missing like.
- 18:28Speaker 2: They're all states. No, no, no.
- 18:30Speaker 4: They're all state schools.
- 18:31Speaker 1: We have no idea how many we're missing. The Big
- 18:33Speaker 1: Ten has 20 teams in it, and we still call
- 18:35Speaker 1: it the Big Ten.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know. It's weird.
- 18:37Speaker 4: I think we're missing five.
- 18:38Speaker 2: How about the Big 20?
- 18:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Last year, the Pac-12 was just Washington State. And who
- 18:44Speaker 3: was the team Washington State was doing home and homes with?
- 18:46Speaker 3: Oregon State?
- 18:47Speaker 5: Oregon State. Yeah.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:49Speaker 4: They're in it this year.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 18:50Speaker 2: No one knows where anyone is. Seriously.
- 18:53Speaker 6: Pick a decent school and throw state on it. And
- 18:55Speaker 6: that's who's in the Pac-12.
- 18:56Speaker 2: That's true.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Like Fresno State or Boise State.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Texas State.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Colorado State.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Texas State.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Wait a second.
- 19:05Speaker 4: Colorado State.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Utah State.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Utah State. The Texas State Wildcats are a Pac-12 team.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Steve Martin.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Close.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Hey.

- 21:11Speaker 2: Smetana!
- 21:17Speaker 1: Felt bad coming out of my mouth, Mikey.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Do you have.
- 21:22Speaker 1: It's a Monday.
- 21:24Speaker 3: You should have done Smetan... Smetana!
- 21:26Speaker 1: Smetana! For nearly two decades, he was considered the greatest
- 21:37Speaker 1: football mind of all time. His quarterback left and things
- 21:42Speaker 1: started to unravel. The next season, that quarterback won a
- 21:47Speaker 1: Super Bowl for a coach who wore a Kangol.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Shortly after, he was let go.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Of course, there was the shirtless video of him leaving
- 21:59Speaker 1: a stranger's home. taking the head football coaching job at
- 22:03Speaker 1: a college basketball school, and Jordan.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Oh, Jordan. But you know what they say. Winning cures everything.
- 22:13Speaker 1: And on Saturday, he was cured with a 15-10 win
- 22:18Speaker 1: over a team that I'm not certain is any good.
- 22:21Speaker 1: But a win's a win. And Jess, just like that.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Make no mistake about it. Bill Belichick.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Is back.
- 22:33Speaker 4: Sure is.
- 22:33Speaker 3: That's my coach.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Yep. Jess, you know what the B in Bill stands for? Back. Yes.
- 22:39Speaker 2: You know what the B in Belichick stands for?
- 22:41Speaker 3: No.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Back. You know what the B in Bobby Petrino stands for?
- 22:47Speaker 5: Back.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Back.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Hey, other coaches, if you think Bobby Petrino doesn't have
- 22:56Speaker 1: his eyes on your job, guess what?
- 23:00Speaker 2: You don't know Bobby Petrino. He's got his eyes on
- 23:04Speaker 2: the job. You know what Pablo Torre is about to
- 23:07Speaker 2: find out?
- 23:09Speaker 1: That Bill Belichick always has the last laugh despite never laughing.
- 23:15Speaker 2: How about that? Baseball.
- 23:20Speaker 1: I want to thank you. It's been a good summer.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Football has it from here. Unlike the MLS.
- 23:34Speaker 4: Good callback.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 23:36Speaker 1: You would think after eight months without college football, college
- 23:40Speaker 1: game day could have found a way to work week zero.
- 23:45Speaker 2: I mean, you're either in or you're out. Let's go.
- 23:49Speaker 4: McAfee.
- 23:50Speaker 2: That's your point. Yeah. Why I'm blaming him. Reese Davis
- 23:55Speaker 2: is doing the US Open. I got to tell you,
- 23:57Speaker 2: game day's not focused. Reese Davis is doing tennis. I mean.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Oh, tennis.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Oh, I love tennis.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Crazy match last night, though.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Yes.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Djokovic. Poor Djokovic.
- 24:11Speaker 1: There's no better feeling than sitting on a couch, or
- 24:15Speaker 1: in Jess's case, on the floor, on a college football
- 24:18Speaker 1: Saturday and knowing you won't be moving for the next
- 24:22Speaker 1: 12 hours. It's great.
- 24:26Speaker 4: I was so happy my dog wasn't where I was.
- 24:28Speaker 4: I was like, oh, I don't have to walk the
- 24:29Speaker 4: dog today.
- 24:29Speaker 2: This is the best day.
- 24:31Speaker 4: And I felt bad.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Hey, Belichick. Just let the record show. I never doubted.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Me neither.
- 24:40Speaker 2: You're such a jackass. You know that?
- 24:43Speaker 4: I did.
- 24:44Speaker 2: All you did was doubt. Still am.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Embarrassed I did.
- 24:49Speaker 2: To everybody.
- 24:50Speaker 4: That one stopped.
- 24:52Speaker 2: That doubted the greatest football coach of all time. Shame
- 24:55Speaker 2: on you. And enjoy that crow. Congratulations to Bill Belichick.
- 25:04Speaker 1: For winning coach of the year before 90% of college
- 25:07Speaker 1: football even kicks off. By the way, Belichick's got his
- 25:13Speaker 1: eyes on every NFL job. And if you don't think
- 25:15Speaker 1: he does, you don't know Bill Belichick.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Put a team in Dublin.
- 25:21Speaker 1: If you ask Bill Belichick for his ideal way to
- 25:24Speaker 1: win a football game, it would be getting somebody to
- 25:28Speaker 1: jump off sides.
- 25:31Speaker 2: They fell for it, man.
- 25:36Speaker 5: Seriously. It's crazy.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Move over. Eight Super Bowl trophies.
- 25:42Speaker 1: And make room for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic Trophy.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Rolls right off the tongue.
- 25:48Speaker 2: It really does. Aer Lingus.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Sounds less like an airline and more like something my
- 25:54Speaker 1: wife said no to.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 25:57Speaker 4: Jesus Christ. The Lingus, though. It is.
- 26:02Speaker 2: The Lingus.
- 26:02Speaker 4: It connotes things.
- 26:07Speaker 1: If you squint hard enough, Billy Edwards Jr. starts to
- 26:11Speaker 1: look like Tom Brady. Jess, you know what the B
- 26:15Speaker 1: in Billy Edwards Jr.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Stands for?
- 26:18Speaker 5: Brady. Brady.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Nailed it.
- 26:21Speaker 1: The way the broadcast was talking about TCU's quarterback made
- 26:25Speaker 1: me think they were watching a different game.
- 26:31Speaker 4: He did make some mistakes were made.
- 26:35Speaker 1: TCU quarterback. Jaden Craig, the rare Harvard quarterback with no
- 26:41Speaker 1: football IQ.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Oh, no. You don't want a Harvard quarterback. I mean,
- 26:45Speaker 2: you just don't.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Fitz?
- 26:48Speaker 5: Eh.
- 26:49Speaker 2: He was on 15 teams.
- 26:51Speaker 5: I mean.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Ricardo just said he never went to the playoffs.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Good point. Who, Fitz?
- 26:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:59Speaker 3: Almost impossible that Fitzpatrick never made it to the playoffs.
- 27:02Speaker 2: That many years on that many teams? You figure he'd
- 27:05Speaker 2: stumble into one.
- 27:06Speaker 1: I mean. If college football was decided on uniforms, UNC
- 27:13Speaker 1: would win every national championship.
- 27:16Speaker 2: They're pretty nice.
- 27:16Speaker 4: I did really like those. Yeah, the black accent, pretty good.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Somewhere in America, Michael Lombardi watched that Carolina game and
- 27:27Speaker 1: turned to somebody and said, I built this team.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Bill Belichick. Do it in America.
- 27:41Speaker 4: True.
- 27:44Speaker 1: If you missed the second half of TCU in North Carolina,
- 27:48Speaker 1: don't worry.
- 27:49Speaker 2: You didn't miss a thing.
- 27:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:54Speaker 2: That defense, man. Slap fest. If you've seen one college
- 28:01Speaker 2: football game in Ireland, you've seen them all.
- 28:05Speaker 3: What is it about that game? Is it the weather?
- 28:07Speaker 2: I don't know. Ireland.
- 28:08Speaker 4: It's always misting.
- 28:09Speaker 3: The field conditions seem terrible.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Great stadium, though.
- 28:14Speaker 2: We keep trotting them out there, though.
- 28:16Speaker 4: You won't hear me say anything bad about it, so
- 28:18Speaker 4: stop trying.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Okay.
- 28:20Speaker 1: The college football season should never start in Dublin, Ireland.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Give me the Rose Bowl. Give me somewhere in the south.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Give me something and somewhere other than.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Dublin, Ireland.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Next season, Pitt Panthers, Wisconsin Badgers.
- 28:37Speaker 2: In Dublin? Yep.
- 28:38Speaker 3: Jesus.
- 28:38Speaker 4: We're sending our professional drinkers abroad. It's going to be great.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Yes. Booger McFarlane, making his game predictions based on what
- 28:49Speaker 1: city he likes to visit more.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Booger, that's how you do it. My man.
- 28:54Speaker 5: I was listening to that, and he's like, I'm taking
- 28:57Speaker 5: Hawaii because I love Maui.
- 28:58Speaker 4: And I was like, okay, what are we doing?
- 29:01Speaker 3: I've got UNLV in the night game. Love visiting Las Vegas.
- 29:05Speaker 2: That's how you do it. Did the Rebels win?
- 29:08Speaker 3: 0 for 2 in those picks.
- 29:09Speaker 2: By the way.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Virginia with their first home win over NC State in
- 29:17Speaker 1: 20 years.
- 29:18Speaker 2: How is that possible?
- 29:21Speaker 4: I mean, Virginia.
- 29:22Speaker 1: There was a different observation here, but I'm reading this
- 29:24Speaker 1: observation and I'm thinking to myself, it's Virginia, it's NC State.
- 29:28Speaker 2: You've never beaten them at home in 20 years. How?
- 29:30Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 29:34Speaker 4: I think he answered your own question.
- 29:35Speaker 2: The Wahoos. Here's the name, Jess. Bo Pribula.
- 29:46Speaker 4: Nailed it.
- 29:47Speaker 2: No, I didn't.
- 29:48Speaker 4: I think you did, but now I'm second guessing myself.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Regardless, he's a running back pretending he's a quarterback.
- 29:56Speaker 5: I'm worried for his ankles. He runs like the kind
- 29:58Speaker 5: of quarterback that gets rolled up on a lot.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Slim T-Bow.
- 30:04Speaker 5: Maybe it's just because he wore low socks, so his
- 30:06Speaker 5: ankles were exposed.
- 30:07Speaker 4: I'm not sure.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Man.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Bow. Probula.
- 30:17Speaker 1: I mean, there's got to be 17 more observations with
- 30:19Speaker 1: this guy's name in it.
- 30:20Speaker 2: It's unbelievable. I don't want to blame anyone, but I'm
- 30:25Speaker 2: staring straight at Taylor. 15 rushes. To just nine completions. Bo.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Enjoy that ice bath. You deserve it.
- 30:37Speaker 1: The most impressive thing in UVA NC State was the
- 30:41Speaker 1: announcers pronouncing Bo Pribula's name differently every time. I said
- 30:46Speaker 1: it quickly and I think I nailed it.
- 30:47Speaker 3: That was your best one so far.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Thank you. Thank you.
- 30:53Speaker 1: When UVA had a 23-play drive, I turned to Abby
- 30:57Speaker 1: and said, Now that's football.
- 31:01Speaker 2: She said, what else would it be? And I said,
- 31:06Speaker 2: never mind. You don't get it.
- 31:09Speaker 4: Service Academy.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Drive right there.
- 31:12Speaker 4: That was good stuff.
- 31:13Speaker 1: NC State must have thought the game was still in
- 31:17Speaker 1: Rio de Janeiro because they got Brazilian waxed.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 31:24Speaker 4: Gross.
- 31:28Speaker 2: How'd that get there?
- 31:31Speaker 4: A shiver went down my spine. It hurts.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Much the way it did towards the end of Taylor's
- 31:39Speaker 2: Irish song. Yes.
- 31:43Speaker 4: Oh, God.
- 31:45Speaker 2: CJ Bailey. Overrated. Dave Dorian. Is that his name?
- 31:50Speaker 3: Doran.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Doran is the James Franklin of Eli Drinkwitz's. I get
- 32:02Speaker 2: that right?
- 32:03Speaker 3: Yep.
- 32:04Speaker 4: I feel like that's an insult to Eli Drinkwitz.
- 32:08Speaker 2: It's Dorian, huh?
- 32:09Speaker 5: Doran.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Doran? Doran.
- 32:12Speaker 4: He's got an extra vowel in there. It's kind of confusing.
- 32:15Speaker 1: No fan base in the country deserves 14 years.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Of Dave Doran.
- 32:22Speaker 4: That's such a Taylor observation.
- 32:23Speaker 2: They should show him the Doran. Think about this, Jess.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Dave Doran has been at NC State longer than Kirby
- 32:37Speaker 1: Smart has been at Georgia. Yeah.
- 32:42Speaker 4: I mean, that kind of tracks, though. I feel like
- 32:46Speaker 4: Kirby hasn't been there that long.
- 32:49Speaker 2: I'm just telling you to think about it.
- 32:51Speaker 4: I'm thinking. I'll keep thinking.
- 32:54Speaker 1: I've never seen ref cam and thought, you know what
- 32:57Speaker 1: this broadcast needs?
- 32:59Speaker 2: More ref cam. It makes me nauseous.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Always.
- 33:05Speaker 4: I'm like getting seasick on the floor.
- 33:07Speaker 3: They act like it's revolutionary to see the ref cam.
- 33:10Speaker 4: I know.
- 33:11Speaker 3: Look at this quarterback running through ref cam. Now spend
- 33:15Speaker 3: the next 20 minutes being disoriented.
- 33:18Speaker 1: UNLV having an Elvis impersonator walk out of the tunnel
- 33:24Speaker 1: with them to open the season.
- 33:27Speaker 2: That's what college football is all about.
- 33:31Speaker 3: So it was weird to do this against Memphis because
- 33:34Speaker 3: Elvis is synonymous with both Memphis and Las Vegas, with
- 33:37Speaker 3: Viva Las Vegas. But when you think Elvis, do you
- 33:40Speaker 3: think Memphis or Vegas more?
- 33:43Speaker 4: I think of Vegas more.
- 33:44Speaker 3: Really?
- 33:46Speaker 5: I really liked the tweet I saw that was like
- 33:49Speaker 5: Memphis versus Vegas, and it was the Memphis Bass Pro
- 33:52Speaker 5: Shops Pyramid and then.
- 33:54Speaker 4: The Vegas Pyramid Hotel. That was really good stuff.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Taylor, put it on the poll, please. When you think
- 34:01Speaker 2: about Elvis, do you think Memphis or Las Vegas?
- 34:05Speaker 3: Ricardo's shaking his head. He said it was definitively Memphis
- 34:08Speaker 3: because of Graceland.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Really?
- 34:10Speaker 4: What do you think, Stu?
- 34:11Speaker 2: It's Vegas. I don't think about them. But if I
- 34:16Speaker 2: were to think about Elvis, I would think about Memphis first.
- 34:18Speaker 2: I would.
- 34:19Speaker 3: Wow, we're all split.
- 34:20Speaker 4: It might be a generational thing.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Graceland. Ricardo's right. People, Las Vegas.
- 34:27Speaker 3: Viva Los Angeles.
- 34:31Speaker 4: Yeah, think of Elvis impersonators first.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Memphis quarterback, Marcus Stokes. Not the Marcus Stokes I had pictured.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Hand up. I didn't know we were making white Marcuses.
- 34:50Speaker 3: I was shocked. Marcus Aurelius. Who?
- 34:59Speaker 2: I mean, I think Marcus Smart. I think Marcus Liberty.
- 35:01Speaker 2: I think, I mean, I'm just saying.
- 35:03Speaker 4: Marcus Freeman.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Marcus Freeman.
- 35:09Speaker 1: You know that saying, a win is a win? Florida
- 35:12Speaker 1: State's win was not a win. Florida State should never
- 35:23Speaker 1: struggle this much to find a quarterback.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Mike Norvell. Making it to November would be a miracle.
- 35:32Speaker 2: We like Norvell.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Which game you got circled for that? The Miami game, maybe?
- 35:36Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 35:36Speaker 4: Like, which game is it going to happen after?
- 35:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:38Speaker 1: I mean, they.
- 35:41Speaker 4: Have a bye right after that, so that would probably
- 35:42Speaker 4: be my guess.
- 35:43Speaker 3: I think you have to do it before the Miami week,
- 35:44Speaker 3: just so you hope to get the interim coach bumped
- 35:47Speaker 3: for that game.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Bring in, like, Coach O.
- 35:50Speaker 2: You know what the N in Norvell stands for, Jess?
- 35:54Speaker 4: Not going to make it to November.
- 35:55Speaker 2: November. You know what the M in Mike stands for?
- 35:58Speaker 5: Miracle.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Something about Stanford and Hawaii in week zero just feels right.
- 36:09Speaker 4: Until Stanford wins.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Well, Stanford seems to have all the ingredients for a
- 36:12Speaker 1: great college football program.
- 36:14Speaker 2: They're missing one key ingredient. Good players. But everything else
- 36:19Speaker 2: is there. The school is great. The field is beautiful.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Andrew Luck is there.
- 36:22Speaker 4: Yeah, it's true. Andrew Luck is there.
- 36:26Speaker 2: Timmy Chang. A name that will always make me smile.
- 36:31Speaker 5: True.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Yes.
- 36:33Speaker 5: Hawaii.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Hell of a fourth quarter comeback. Speaking of hell. Art Bryles. Jess.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Those are the Weekend Observations.
