- 2:40Lieutenant? Rob daylight two? Where did it happen? And might be
- 2:44sixth and Maine. A guy in a taxi drove up alongside a couple of
- 2:46women and lifted this sparkla What they get? Three or four rings and a
- 2:50diamond necklace Man's Field. The dame that on the necklace is worth eighty thousand
- 2:53parts. Wait a minute, is that Missus Lester Mansfield? Yeah, I've
- 2:58heard of that necklace before. Where are you now, Paul Bark sticks the
- 3:00main. The women are here too, one of them fainted where you got
- 3:02her in the dark? Stall? Okay, sit tight, I'll be right
- 3:05over. Yes, have Captain Watson send somebody to relieve Patrolman O'Rourke stick the
- 3:13main and send out a radio pickup on a phony tech dab. Somebody just
- 3:16lift through the Man's Field necklace. Where the women, Mike and the drugs
- 3:31star Lieutenant and doctor's looking after Missus Smith. She's caring on something marveled.
- 3:36Missus Mansfield in there too, Yes, sir, all right, I'll see
- 3:38if I can get a description from her. Get this crowd to move England.
- 3:42Come inside, Captain Watson sending a man to relieve you. Yes,
- 3:45sir, all right, I'm so glad you're here. It was dreadful.
- 3:52He drove up a long time. That's a minute, ma'am. You are
- 3:53Missus man's Field, Lieutenant. That's the other lady, very excited. Missus
- 3:58Smith isn't the very strong woman, lieutenant? And when them met. Sit
- 4:00down here, Missus Mansfield, let's get the whole story. Oh you're so
- 4:04cool and brave, Lieutenant. I just know you'll find my necklace. Won't
- 4:10possible, ma'am. What happened Missus Smith and I? She's a white,
- 4:13gracious Smith, you know. But with just coming back from the Service League
- 4:16charity. I was driving my roaster down Sixth Street when a TEXTI pulled up
- 4:20alongside and paused me to the curt that's a minute, ma'am. What kind
- 4:25of a taxi? Oh? Just a regular kind, you know, the
- 4:27two colored ones. I see, go ahead. A man jumped out and
- 4:30said he was sorry that the steering gear had broken. He came around to
- 4:33our side of the car, and then I saw he had a gun.
- 4:36He took our duel, got back into the taxi and left. It all
- 4:40happened so quickly that I didn't know what to make of it for a minute.
- 4:43Missus Mansfield, Oh, sit down, Mike and get this description.
- 4:47Missus Mansfield, can you tell us what this man looked like? Well,
- 4:51not very well. He was smaller than new Lieutenant, rather dark, and
- 4:57wore a blue stirted sea. Was he wearing a hat, No, it
- 5:00was a cap, I believe. Did you see the color of his hair,
- 5:03No, not that I remember. But I noticed the scar on his
- 5:08right cheek, I thought. As he reached for my purse, scurryh that's
- 5:12good. Is this the person? Yes? He opened it and took the
- 5:15money that was inside and threw it back into the car. We don't want
- 5:17to borrow this for a while, Missus Mansley. You'll see if we can
- 5:19find any prints on it. They show up nicely on that patent letter.
- 5:23Oh sure, in Lieutenant, Oh, I do hope you'll find my necklace.
- 5:27Lester will be so angry because I wore it today. You see,
- 5:30he asked me not to probably more worried about your welfare than the necklace.
- 5:34Well, be do what we can, man. He'll be at home if
- 5:36we want you, Yes, all right, we'll call you if anything turns
- 5:41up. Come on, Mike, let's take this bag to the fingerprint Buda.
- 5:44Yeah, sir, I wanted he say. Lieutenant Powers identified the prince
- 6:08as belonging to Antonio Moretti, with a record of two terms in state prison.
- 6:12I'll see that file a minute, okayo m Moretti. Yeah here it
- 6:21is age thirty one. See that picture. That's the same guy that missus
- 6:28men see to describe scar and everything. Yeah, we'll have him in twenty
- 6:30minutes. Hello, Tim, send out a pickup on Antonio Moretti and have
- 6:36the DEAK issue a warrant for first degree robbery. You'll find all that open
- 6:41the files. I want him inside of twenty four hours. Right, you
- 6:45don't mean to go back on my beat now, autant, Yeah, you
- 6:46might as well make oh wait a minute, hello, Oh good, send
- 6:51him in. That's a minute. There's something new on the case already not
- 6:57yet. A taxi driver just came in report losing his cab, and maybe
- 7:00the same one mulready used. Come in, Oh, sit down. What's
- 7:09your name? Becauson? I drive? Yes, yes, I know somebody
- 7:13stole your cab. Tell me about it. Well, I was at my
- 7:15station over on Cambridge when I get a call to a room in house on
- 7:17garfiad Wait a minute, remember the address? No, but I can find
- 7:23the house, all right, go ahead, Well I go over. Then
- 7:25this guy gets in and tells me to drive him the medical Aue building downtown.
- 7:29I drove two or four blocks and tepally I feeed a gun on the
- 7:31back of my neck and the guy telling me to step out. What did
- 7:33you do? I stepped out and the guy drove off. Eh, yes,
- 7:36sir, Oh, Mike, answer, show this fellow the picture of
- 7:40Tony MURRETTI answer right here, Lieutennis, there is that the guy. See
- 7:46that's him? All right, I remember him by that's car on the state.
- 7:49Okay, my car is downstairs. You're going to direct us to that
- 7:53rooming house on Garfields. Come on, Mike, maybe this won't be such
- 7:56a tough job after all. Yeah, is it yep? Time out?
- 8:15Okay, you stay in the car. Come on, Mike, it's just
- 8:24a kind of a place you'd expect my ready to hang out. And I
- 8:26bet you can get a room here for a buck a week. Someone's coming
- 8:28to the door. We're officers, but then Tony, I'm already live here.
- 8:33He's the largest kidding the officer. Sure there's no mister MURRETTI living here,
- 8:37sauce I run a nice clean place, or we don't have no law
- 8:41records living here? Go other picture, Mike, Yes, yeah, I
- 8:46ever seen this man before. Boy, it looks just like mister Williams.
- 8:50Calls himself mister Joel Williams here, and I don't know he's in one hundred
- 8:58and Twelvey. Come on, Mike and lift your gun again. I have
- 9:01in here are you now? You look here, we'll find the room than
- 9:13twelve. It is a tenant, all right. If it's luck, kick
- 9:16it in, I'll cover you. Nobody home. Looks like we beat him.
- 9:24Here those who are still hanging around the room, and there's a package
- 9:28a cigarette. Did I ever lift that? Young man? I thought I
- 9:33told you to stay back there. That's right to just remembered something that I
- 9:37think to myself, you should not will Last night, after I'd gone to
- 9:41bed, there comes a man here asking for mister Williams. And I go
- 9:46back and look and mister Williams iden So the sella asked to the Garden of
- 9:50the Moon, what did you tell him should I told him yes, and
- 9:54give him a home on the second floor. No, that's just what I'm
- 9:58trying to tell your thoughts. He left this morning. I'll pay me my
- 10:01fifty cents from new room. Say where he was going? Yes, prop,
- 10:05he tells me. It's how he was going to the depots leaving town.
- 10:07What did this fellow look like? I got a pretty good look at
- 10:11him, and see is how he was run faced man, almost as because
- 10:15yourself, with funny watery kind of eyes and walk with a limb. Pull
- 10:18Alexander, I ain't sure, friends, I'm there. He thought he was
- 10:20going to the depot way. How long ago was this? Quick? Mike
- 10:24out of the car. Yes, sir, I've got a hunt that Tony
- 10:26Murredy had ball in on the job with him to get the necklace out of
- 10:28town. We've got to be into that train, the train leaving on track
- 10:54five for the West. Come on, Mike on my brand yellow ban here.
- 10:58Hey, let's talk through this gate. We're officers. Oh, there
- 11:01it is, Mike. He'll be leaving it in a couple of minutes.
- 11:05Let's try the pullman coach the first. The guy will probably want private,
- 11:07all right, swing up here, we are officers. Porter. Is it
- 11:11a large red faced man with bleary eyes on this frame? You owe me
- 11:15a man in car for I don't know. We'll see Come on, Mike,
- 11:20Yeah this is the car, isn't. Yeah? Well here we are.
- 11:26Oh hello, Ball, you're leaving tom Hey, you kick thing.
- 11:31Got nothing on me? Just gonna win a little business script, that's all.
- 11:35Just because you had a guy in stir once, don't mean that you
- 11:37can hold him the rest of his life. No, stand up both.
- 11:41We're searching you for the Mansfield necklace. Eh, I'll search your head.
- 11:46I ain't got it, all right, Mike's look through his bag. Yeah,
- 11:48I'll take bulle into the washroom here and see what he's wearing. What
- 12:07it define? Nothing saint in any of the bag, Lieutenant. That's funny.
- 12:11It wasn't on him either. I'm telling you got me all wrong,
- 12:15Lieutenant. I didn't even know this. Tony were ready at Joe Williams.
- 12:18I'm going to win a little trip to see my Sistine. It was a
- 12:22business trip before Ball. I want to take him downstairs. Nah, we
- 12:26couldn't hold him. We haven't got a thing on him. He'd be out
- 12:28before morning. You told me wrong, Lieutenant. I wasn't mixed up and
- 12:33not Joel robbery. I'm no pay I know that. Don't make me laugh,
- 12:37your red faced baboon. You'll have your back on the calendar in six
- 12:39months. Here, i'll show you I'm on the level, Lieutenant. I'll
- 12:48buy you a cold drink. Yeah, boy, no thanks, Ball,
- 12:52I'm particular who I drink with. I ain't as bad as that, lieutenant.
- 12:56Here, I'll have a sandwich, give it a gentleman, A cold
- 12:58drink, boy, no thanks, don't bother. Well, I'm sorry.
- 13:03We couldn't dig in boll trains leave him, so I guess we'll have to
- 13:05get off. But if you're smart, you'll stay at your sisters from now
- 13:09on. Come on, Mike, yes, break, I'm not sure we
- 13:18have of the good stuck down here. Don't ask questions, duck there for
- 13:22the moment. That's all right. We're going back inside the car, all
- 13:26right. Bolt, put him up? Sorry, why don't put him up?
- 13:30Get in that right hand coat pocket, Mike. There, that's it,
- 13:33Holy smump. The necklace and the rings too. Yeah, he didn't
- 13:37get away with them after all, But they wasn't there when we fished him
- 13:39right, Mike, he didn't have them when we searched him. And how
- 13:43did he get him? Right under our nose? They were slipped to women
- 13:46a sandwich. What that sandwich? Man is? Tonymlready and it's getting off
- 13:50the train now, said please headquarters. Okay, Lieutenant, Hello, Tim,
- 14:09I have a car pick Lieutenant Gray up at pleasant Town. He's holding
- 14:11two prisoners in the Mansfield duels. Please head quarters. This man lock next
- 14:20to the homicide. I'm a side details Pergan Burke. This is the residence
- 14:28of mister jac and Millard mickon Miller's public speaking Mickey Miller had just been found
- 14:31dead. Share what's your name? John Prendish Shair? Who found him?
- 14:35I did, Sir. I was just taking him his breakfast. Anyone else
- 14:37in my house? All right? Just leave everything like it is until we
- 14:41get there. Oh, yes, Sair. Doctor Wade in his office,
- 14:48I think so, go ahead, he him, get his tool chest.
- 14:50Meet me at the front door. Yes, what's up, funny? Somebody
- 14:52just bumped Jake Millard. Sorry I had to rush out early, doc,
- 15:07But I don't commit these early morning murders. I just follow him up.
- 15:11That's all right, Sergeant I think I'll enjoy a little motor trip into the
- 15:15country. Who's the victim a retired gangs over the name of Millard? Jake
- 15:18Millard. I seem to remember that name in the papers. Retired, you
- 15:22say, well, yes and no. You see, Jake used to be
- 15:26associated with Pete Johnigan, the racketeer who controls the trucking and shipping business on
- 15:31the East Side. I remember him. Yeah, Well, Johnnigan's racket is
- 15:33protecting the trucking people from his own mob. You get what I mean.
- 15:37Millard split with him and went into the protection business from the other angle.
- 15:41He was protecting the truckers from Jonigan's mob, but a much lower figure.
- 15:43I see a sort of a double cross. Yeah, and now it seems
- 15:48somebody sort of triple across Jake Millard by bumping them off. And good riddance
- 15:52if you ask me. That's what I say, Doc, But the old
- 15:54man don't see it that way. Whenever a gangsters rubbed out, we're supposed
- 15:58to work just as hard to get hit his murderer as whether he was a
- 16:00banker or a lawyer. What one might call the injustice of justice. Oh,
- 16:08it's the place, yeah, Andllard lived here all alone and is with
- 16:12his butler. Wh a gangster with a butler? Interesting? You can bet
- 16:18he's sort of a bodyguard as well. Did the butler say how Millard was
- 16:22killed? No, that's why I brought you along, Doc, so I
- 16:25wouldn't have to take this bird's word for it. Oh, come in,
- 16:30sir, your apprentice, doctor Wade. Yes, say where's the body upstairs?
- 16:36Hir? Time you find him? Just before I called you, sir,
- 16:41about eight thirty for time? The Millard come in last night shortly after
- 16:45midnight, sir? And you know I was with him. Did he take
- 16:49you with him every time he went out? Most generally? Sir? Oh?
- 16:52Bond my word, sir? Just what I thought? You're packing a
- 16:56rod? Well, I have a permit for that, sir. That's what
- 16:59if we call against highwayman's set. That's a good one, and I just
- 17:03keep this rod for a while, certainly. Sure. Oh, here here's
- 17:06mister Miller Drew run up a shade. Yes, yes, there he is,
- 17:14Doc, laying on the bed. Shouldn't be a hard job to find
- 17:15out what killed him, not with that knife sticking out of his chirt line.
- 17:18If now here's a handkerchief, to save the prince. Oh all right,
- 17:25yes, lest a nearly penetrate to the body. Our victims died without
- 17:29a struggle through the heart clean. It doesn't seem to affect you very much,
- 17:33Prentice. I was in the water set? Which war? The one
- 17:37last night was set Johnagan's mob down to the docks? Oh, no,
- 17:38sir, where were you and Millard last night? Where were you and Millard
- 17:42last night? Telling you a concert? Yeah? Which you want? It
- 17:47was a philharmonic, sure, but Simpson he'd be a minor the unfinished one
- 17:49set? Don't make me laugh? Got any idea who killed him? No?
- 17:55Chet? How long have been dead? Doc? I was just pissing
- 17:57the state of rigor mortar from then through the place of York. Question,
- 18:00Sergeant, it's in a rather well advanced state. I should say about six
- 18:04or seven hours nine o'clock. Now, that'll make it about two or three
- 18:08this morning, a fairly accurate hour, sergeant. And oh, you're fine.
- 18:15A very astonishing thing, sergeant. Jake Millard was killed twice last night?
- 18:21Killed? Well, what do you mean? Jake Millard was killed twice
- 18:23last night, once with a knife and once with a gun. Go,
- 18:27I'm serious. There's a bullet wound in the head. Here says well,
- 18:33I'll be a monkey's uncle. Once with a knife and once with a gun.
- 18:37Tell me, Doc, who won the man with a knife. How
- 18:38do you know the character of the gun shot wound shows very clearly that it
- 18:42was inflicted one or perhaps two hours after that. Now we're in a fine
- 18:48fix. We've got a look for two murders instead of one. And what
- 18:52do you think happened here last night? Doc? I think it's fairly simple.
- 18:55Two people set out to get Millard last night. One of these men
- 18:59gain access to this room by that Trellers outside the window. There go ahead,
- 19:03dog, you're doing great. He tiptoed across the room and plunged a
- 19:07knife through Millard's heart, then left the way it entered. Death was instantaneous,
- 19:11and about an hour later murderer number two reaches the scene. He climbs
- 19:17the same Trellers with the same murderous intent in his heart, but instead of
- 19:21entering the room, he takes a careful aim at his victim with a silence
- 19:25revolver, never noticing the knife. After the shot, he slips away unnoticed,
- 19:30thinking he has accomplished his mission. The way you put a doc Jake
- 19:33Mullard with one popular guy a few hours ago. Yes, Sergeant, somewhere
- 19:37in this town are two highly satisfied men each thinks that he killed Jake Millard.
- 19:42You know, sergeants, one of those men is going to be very,
- 19:47very disappointed. Well, he's been working all day on the case.
- 20:07Sergeant. What did you find? Nothing? Now, there's nothing except the
- 20:10guns Power just gave me a report on it. Yes, we found a
- 20:12fingerprint and a barrel, and powers traced it to a dopey little hooding on
- 20:15a wheezy lane. Well, I should say that your day hadn't been wasted,
- 20:18sergeant. And this this fellow lanes and boys picked him up just about
- 20:22fifteen minutes ago. They're bringing him up here now for questioning. Well,
- 20:25don't be disheartened, sergeant. You haven't arrest. Yeah, but he ain't
- 20:29the right one. You said the guy with a knife killed him. That's
- 20:30right. Well, then we ain't got nothing against this guy. You can't
- 20:33kill a man twice. That wouldn't be too sure a surgean Hello sent him
- 20:40in? What? No, the boys are bringing wheezy in. What's the
- 20:45hose for little persuader? I told Wheezy Lane that the next time I got
- 20:49him in this office, I'd whale a tower out of him. Oh and
- 20:52do you mean to carry out your thrip? No, but Wheezy'll think so.
- 20:55Tim I slapped a chair a few times close to his head with his
- 20:57hose. He'll talk and talk fast, all right, boys, bring him
- 21:02in. I got nothing on me. I was just hanging out in Joe's
- 21:07pool parlor when this car load at six pounds on me. It won't even
- 21:11tell me what I'm picked up for. Well, it ain't that too bad.
- 21:15Sit on you, yellow livered shrimp, sat on to where I slept.
- 21:18You to sleep with this hole? It's got me wrong? Or were
- 21:22you last night? That's a lie? All right? Ask I don't need
- 21:26to. I know you got him fixed, Alice in Wheezy. I'm giving
- 21:29you one chance and then I'll start working over. Jake Millard was killed last
- 21:33night? So what I didn't do it? George? Or I know you
- 21:36didn't. Finding your gun with your fingerprints on it just below Jake Millard's bedroom
- 21:38window don't mean a thing, does it. You can't hint that on me.
- 21:41I I lost the cat? Yeah, yeah you did? Are you
- 21:45gonna talk, Wheezy. Hey, you got understand, all right, don't
- 21:49hit me with that thing side the next time, I'll split your head open.
- 21:52Are you gonna talk? Ain't it? Don't charge? Don't hit me,
- 21:56you yellow right, I'll break your neck. I'm the police surgeon,
- 22:00Weezy. I made the autopsy on Millard's buddy, and I found out that
- 22:04you didn't kill him. That's what I've been telling this big sight a minute
- 22:08now. I said you didn't kill him. I know that you thought you
- 22:12did, but you didn't. Somebody with a knife beat you to it.
- 22:15What are you talking about? You don't have to act innocent, Wheezy.
- 22:18Millard was already dead when you shot him. Therefore you didn't kill him.
- 22:22See, oh your friend, No it isn't. I'm giving it a straight
- 22:26good Sweezy. We haven't got a thing on you. That is, if
- 22:30you tell us who did kill him, I don't know. And if you
- 22:33don't talk, Wheezy, I'll just forget about the stab wound in my report,
- 22:37and the sergeant here will bring a charge against you for the bullet wound
- 22:41with your print on the revolver. Well, I wouldn't like to be in
- 22:47your shoes. You are you telling me straight? Doc, I'm telling you
- 22:52that you didn't kill Jake Millard. Well, all right, I'll talk good.
- 22:56Who knifed him? I don't know, you don't know. Oh you
- 23:00see it's this why, Doc, Jack Millard has been button into Pete Jonagan's
- 23:03racket. I work for Pete doing secretary work. See well, Pete called
- 23:10all the boys, five of us, into his office yesterday afternoon and says
- 23:14that this stuff is Jack Millard button into our racket has got to stop.
- 23:18He ends up by offering us ten grand to the first guy to put Millard
- 23:21out of the white. So you all went after me? Man, Yeah,
- 23:22and I don't know which one of the boys got it. I see,
- 23:26well, we see you can go, I can go. Oh gee,
- 23:29that's swelling at dog. What's the big idea? Nor? Weasy can
- 23:32go, sergeant, except first, there's something he's got to do for us.
- 23:53A man, Oh, I know she was sorry to hear about your
- 23:56accident. Yeah, as soon as we hear the nurse telephoned, this will
- 24:00be come right over. But here's pet and the boy. Yeah, hello,
- 24:06what happened with I was stepping off a curve over on Central when a
- 24:08truck smacked me. I woke up here in the hospital. He got that
- 24:11too bad? What's the matter with you? Hurt rocking leg and a fractured
- 24:15right arm. Doctors will be here for six weeks, see the tough.
- 24:18Yeah, it's gonna cost me a water dough too. That ten grand you
- 24:22offered us for killing Jake Miller, it'll come in handy to pay hospital expensive
- 24:26queasy on that around here? You didn't kill your leg? What do you
- 24:30mean interesting? The papers next, he's suck a nice name about an hour
- 24:34before you What are you talking about? Oh that's that straight dope. He
- 24:38paid me the ten tom this afternoon, I killed Millard. I want no
- 24:45need to look at that door. Pat a dozen men outside. I got
- 24:48a cart reporter here too, taking down everywhere there was said, Yeah,
- 24:52I guess you're all in a jam, everyone here except me. Sergeant.
- 24:55You know what you said if I lead these guys into the darks little trap,
- 24:59you wouldn't bring a child. Well I must have been wrong about that,
- 25:00weezy. I've been reading the loud book since i've seen you, and
- 25:04I find out I got to take you into Yeah, what's the charge?
- 25:07I didn't kill. What's the charge I didn't kill Jake. You know that's
- 25:11a new one on me. Weazy mutilating a corpse at least a quarters,
- 25:26okay, Sargeant, hello Tim, Then the patrol of the Providence Hospital,
- 25:33Sergeant Burke just got feet. Johagan's whole mob for that Millard killing, please
- 25:40headquarters, welcome back. On the first story, not many thoughts except those
- 26:26were some Nervey crooks willing to go ahead and to I mean, seriously,
- 26:36I think they would have been out of the way if they hadn't delivered the
- 26:40sandwiches in front of the police officers and then got caught. The second episode
- 26:47was well, it was more stereotypical thirty stuff, though to be fair,
- 26:52they didn't actually hit the suspect. They just intimidated him to death with fear
- 26:56of assault, probably painting on the popular media stereo tops of the day.
- 27:06And they did that in other ways with the language, like telling the doctor
- 27:10to bring his toolbox because that's the official term was. It was weird them
- 27:15insisting for like the first half of the episode where there was two murders,
- 27:19no, only one and one who was guilty of if I seen a corpse
- 27:25now on to some listener comments and feedback in this comment from Rachel, who
- 27:30says, I've been very happy with this app since I bought it. It
- 27:33makes it much easier to keep track of which great detective shows I've listened to,
- 27:37and has a lock screen widget that allows me to shut it off if
- 27:40needed without having to unlock my phone. It allows me to advance or rewind
- 27:45by thirty seconds, which another app I had been using didn't have. Thanks
- 27:49so much, Rachel, and you're the second person to comment on some of
- 27:53the improvements in design and functionality. And really that's all due to our partners
- 28:00at Wizard Media who handle the lipsyn service. They've really and over the years
- 28:08this app has grown and they've had kind of the opportunity to be able to
- 28:15improve the app, and only other apps is they've gotten content producers to provide
- 28:22the information the customer base, and so I really appreciate everything they've done to
- 28:30improve it, and I hope you continue to enjoy the app. Thanks so
- 28:34much. All right, Well, we will be back on Monday with the
