- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday.
- 0:15It's the 18th of September and I know if you're anything like me,
- 0:19you did not get a wink of sleep last night as you lay in bed
- 0:22thinking what happened to Paul. He was getting carried out by
- 0:27those Roman guards. He was asked if you could please
- 0:30turn around and say something and he took a deep breath and
- 0:34then we stopped. Well today we continue and we
- 0:37hear what Paul has to say in defence of himself and the
- 0:41gospel and how that goes down with the ferocious crowd.
- 0:45Spoiler not very well, so let's dive straight into it shall we?
- 0:49No more further ado Acts chapter 22
- 1:03brothers and esteemed fathers. Paul said.
- 1:06Listen to me as ioffer my defence.
- 1:09When they heard him speaking in their own language, the silence
- 1:13was even greater. Then Paul said, I am a Jew born
- 1:19in Tarsus, a city in Sicilia, and I was brought up and
- 1:23educated here in Jerusalem under Gamaliel.
- 1:26As his student. I was carefully trained in our
- 1:29Jewish laws and customs. I became very zealous to honour
- 1:34God in everything I did, just like all of you today.
- 1:38And I persecuted the followers of the way, hounding some to
- 1:42death, arresting both men and women and throwing them in
- 1:46prison. The high priest and the whole
- 1:48council of elders can testify that this is so, for I received
- 1:53letters from them to our Jewish brothers in Damascus,
- 1:56authorising me to bring the followers of the way from there
- 2:00to Jerusalem in chains to be punished.
- 2:04As I was on the road approaching Damascus about noon, a very
- 2:08bright light from heaven suddenly shone down around me.
- 2:12I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul,
- 2:18why are you persecuting me? Who are you, Lord?
- 2:22I asked and the voice replied, I am Jesus the Nazarene, the one
- 2:28you are persecuting. The people with me saw the light
- 2:32but didn't understand the voice speaking to me.
- 2:34I asked, what should I do Lord? And the Lord told me, Get up and
- 2:40go into Damascus, and there you will be told everything you are
- 2:44to do. I was blinded by the intense
- 2:47light and had to be led by the hand to Damascus by my
- 2:50companions. A man named Ananias lived there.
- 2:54He was a godly man, deeply devoted to the law and well
- 2:58regarded by all the Jews of Damascus.
- 3:01He came and stood beside me and said, Brother Saul, regain your
- 3:06sight. And that very moment I could see
- 3:10him. Then he told me, The God of our
- 3:14ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the
- 3:18righteous, 1 and hear him speak, for you are to be his witness,
- 3:24telling everyone what you have seen and heard.
- 3:27What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptised.
- 3:30Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.
- 3:34After I returned to Jerusalem, I was praying in the temple and
- 3:38fell into a trance. I saw a vision of Jesus saying
- 3:41to me, hurry, leave Jerusalem, for the people here won't accept
- 3:46your testimony about me. But Lord, I argued, they
- 3:50certainly know that in every synagogue I'm prisoned and beat
- 3:54those who believed in you. And I was in complete agreement
- 3:58when your witness Stephen was killed.
- 4:01I stood by and kept the coats they took off when they stoned
- 4:05him. But the Lord said to me, go, for
- 4:09I will send you far away to the Gentiles.
- 4:13The crowd listened until Paul said that word.
- 4:16Then they all began to shout away.
- 4:19With such a fellow, he isn't fit to live.
- 4:22They yelled, threw off their coats, and tossed handfuls of
- 4:26dust into the air. The commander brought Paul
- 4:30inside and ordered him lashed with whips to make him confess
- 4:34his crime. He wanted to find out why the
- 4:37crowd became so furious when they tied Paul down to Lashem.
- 4:42Paul said to the officer standing there, Is it legal for
- 4:45you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn't even been tried?
- 4:50When the officer heard this, he went to the commander and asked,
- 4:54what are you doing? This man is a Roman citizen.
- 4:58So the commander went over and asked Paul, tell me, are you a
- 5:02Roman citizen? Yes, I certainly am, Paul
- 5:06replied. I am too, the commander
- 5:10muttered. And it cost me plenty, Paul
- 5:14answered. But I am a citizen by birth.
- 5:18The soldiers who are about to interrogate Paul quickly
- 5:21withdrew when the Herdie was a Roman citizen and the commander
- 5:24was frightened because he had ordered him bound and whipped.
- 5:29The next day the commander ordered the leading priests
- 5:32intercession with the Jewish High Council.
- 5:35He wanted to find out what the trouble was all about, so he
- 5:39released Paul to have him stand before them.
- 5:52Lord Jesus, what an example of boldness we see in Paul.
- 5:58He's able to just speak so clearly and confidently in what
- 6:02he knows to be true. And he has this trump card up
- 6:06his sleeve, which is his Roman citizenship, which gives him
- 6:10these rights in this place. And Lord, here we are all these
- 6:16years later, and we might not be Roman citizens, but we are
- 6:20citizens of your eternal Kingdom.
- 6:24And that citizenship brings us so much more than Roman
- 6:28citizenship. We know that as citizens of your
- 6:31Kingdom that we have a Father who loves us, that you, the
- 6:36Almighty God of the universe, is for us, and that you have our
- 6:42eternity all secured and locked down through the incredible gift
- 6:49and sacrifice that Jesus has given us.
- 6:53My Lord, thank you for all that you have done for us.
- 6:57Thank you that you give us this rock solid foundation from which
- 7:01to live and to speak and to act. Our Lord, I pray that we may
- 7:06never forget our foundation of being members of your Kingdom
- 7:11and the profound privilege and security that this brings us.
- 7:16So we just lift you up, our King and our Saviour, and we pray all
- 7:19of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
