Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Exceeding the Limits Set By Our Minds to Harness Powers of Health and Fitness
Transcript
- 0:00We generally remain locked within the framework of our past
- 0:04training and experience. We create walls around ourselves
- 0:08that circumscribe what we believe we can accomplish, what
- 0:12we can do, what is real, and what is possible.
- 0:16As long as we remain primarily fixated on the past, we limit
- 0:21our opportunity for growth and development in the future.
- 0:26We deny possibilities based on never having experienced them
- 0:29previously, or if we have tried and not succeeded, we conclude
- 0:35that the attempt was doomed to failure, either due to it being
- 0:39an illusory goal or due to our own lack of fitness and capacity
- 0:45to achieve the goal. This limiting mechanism is
- 0:49something that the mind, with its limited framework and
- 0:52vision, imposes on our vital nature and our physical body.
- 0:58Something is either not feasible, too difficult, or we
- 1:02are simply not adaptable enough to succeed at it.
- 1:06At least that is what our inner voice tells us.
- 1:11If we reflect for a moment, we can see that such limiting
- 1:15concepts in our minds have not guided us well in the past.
- 1:19We believed for ages that the moon was unapproachable, but
- 1:23during the 1960s humanity was able to harness rudimentary
- 1:28techniques of Space Flight and actually land people on the
- 1:32moon. We believed that certain
- 1:35diseases were incurable. The history of the bubonic
- 1:39plague known as the Black Plague in Europe is such an example.
- 1:45Fear ran rampant and people died.
- 1:48Over time, with research and consideration of potential
- 1:53vectors, the disease was indeed brought under control.
- 1:58Leprosy was a feared disease which was eventually brought
- 2:02under control. Smallpox was a worldwide mass
- 2:05killing disease which was eventually eradicated.
- 2:10These successes were brought about by people who refuse to
- 2:15listen to the voices of denial, the claims of impossibility, and
- 2:21who overcame the fear of trying. It is clear that just because
- 2:26something has not been done in the past, it cannot be worked
- 2:30out and developed in the future. These examples, however, relate
- 2:38to humanity as a whole, not any specific individual.
- 2:43Someone might then believe that the sum of humanity is greater
- 2:47than the parts of humanity, and that what humanity can
- 2:51accomplish collectively is not applicable to any individual's
- 2:55own situation. This, however, would be easily
- 2:59found to be inaccurate. While humanity has had
- 3:04successes, as noted above, they were built on the contributions
- 3:08of a series of individuals either working on their own or
- 3:12collaborating. We're building upon the work of
- 3:15others before them. Forerunners in various fields
- 3:19have seen, intuited, or worked out solutions to concerns that
- 3:25others simply disbelieved. When we turn to the individual
- 3:30case, however, it is also clear that many things can be
- 3:34accomplished through patient, persevering, and consistent
- 3:38efforts. Focus and receptivity.
- 3:42In this way, even the physical body has been pushed far beyond
- 3:46limits that were considered impossible to attain even just a
- 3:50few short years or decades ago. We hear of individuals who have
- 3:56systematically trained themselves to withstand extreme
- 3:59cold temperatures or to generate inner psychic heat through the
- 4:03practice of TOMO. We hear of people who were
- 4:07partially paralyzed in an accident, who do not accept the
- 4:10limitations, and who eventually regain full use of their limbs.
- 4:15There are others who struggle with various academic subjects
- 4:19until one day, through their persistent efforts, the
- 4:23proverbial light goes on and they now understand what was
- 4:27incomprehensible to them previously.
- 4:31We find people who develop powers of intuition,
- 4:34clairvoyance, clairaudience, various powers of will and
- 4:39expression through focus and commitment, and a sense of
- 4:43receptivity to those powers simply by not believing that
- 4:48such things are impossible. If we were limited by what has
- 4:54occurred in the past, or even in our own past, we would not be
- 4:59able to grow, to learn, to progress, to develop new
- 5:03capacities at all. Yet we see that all of these
- 5:08things are not only possible, but are the normal condition
- 5:12that pertains to much of humanity when people are not
- 5:15simply under pure survival mode at all times.
- 5:19Even then, we hear of situations where people have lifted cars to
- 5:24free a trapped child, even though the car was far beyond
- 5:27any weight limit they could have conceived.
- 5:30They simply did not think about it.
- 5:33They just did it under the force of necessity.
- 5:38Shrioro Bindo notes, quote Above all, do not harbor that idea of
- 5:44an unfit body. All suggestions of that kind are
- 5:48a subtle attack on the will to city, and especially dangerous
- 5:53in physical matters. The first business is to expel
- 5:57it. Bag and baggage, appearances and
- 6:00facts may be all in its favor, but the first condition of
- 6:05success for the Yogin, and indeed for anybody who wants to
- 6:09do anything great or unusual, is to be superior to facts and
- 6:14disbelieve in appearances. Will to be free from disease,
- 6:18however formidable many faced, or constant its attacks, and
- 6:23repel all contrary suggestions. End Quote.
