- 0:00Hi and welcome back dog mums and dads for another episode of the
- 0:03Natural Dog Mum podcast. We are here today with the
- 0:07lovely Sarah. Her brand is called Kelpie Bone,
- 0:11and I have to tell you, I'm a little bit obsessed.
- 0:16I'm going to let Sarah tell you all about it and what it is and
- 0:19why it's so good and all the rest of it.
- 0:22I will just say that it is a healthy dog chew that has a
- 0:27whole bunch of other benefits and is great for dogs that for
- 0:31whatever reason, can't have raw bones.
- 0:34So very, very excited to talk to her and let you guys know more
- 0:38about her amazing product. So stick around.
- 0:43I'm so excited to make people know about your product.
- 0:46Everyone I told and I have been telling people left and right
- 0:50about you. Everyone I've told you is just,
- 0:52Oh my God, that's brilliant. Unbelievable.
- 0:54So you're probably going to get some more enquiries and some
- 0:58more calls because there's there's a couple of retailers
- 1:02and like independent pet stores that I've mentioned.
- 1:06Yeah, that were interested. Thank you.
- 1:08So much, I feel like it's been such a journey to get here.
- 1:12I mean, I was talking to not PLA, who's the person that I
- 1:16source the seaweed from like 2 years ago now.
- 1:18And I kind of just started as such, like A Little Dream.
- 1:21And then yeah, it feels so good that it's finally here now,
- 1:25honestly. And yeah, I'm so excited to
- 1:27bring out all the different seaweed products, to be honest.
- 1:31It's just such a great idea. I don't know why someone didn't
- 1:35do it sooner, but good for you that they didn't.
- 1:40Yeah. So tell us a little bit about
- 1:42where where the ideas? Come from when I started my dogs
- 1:46really loved those like, I don't know if you've seen them but you
- 1:49know those plastic dog toys that have like beef flavour in the
- 1:53like peanut butter flavour Well, my dogs loved them and then one
- 1:58day they were chewing them and because my my day job is in the
- 2:01sustainability sector they were chewing them and I was like they
- 2:05this the plastics coming out the other end because of course dogs
- 2:09eat everything so they just ended up eating and then I was
- 2:11like this is so wrong. So then I was like, I need to
- 2:14fix this and I couldn't find like, you know, one of my dogs
- 2:17is allergic to like rawhide and it doesn't sit well with her
- 2:20and. So you don't want to sleep raw
- 2:22anyway. It's horrible stuff.
- 2:23Exactly because I didn't know that at the time.
- 2:25And then like I was doing all this research into it and I was
- 2:28like, Oh my goodness, there's so many things.
- 2:31And I was chatting to my vet and my vet was like, you've got to
- 2:33be super careful with meat bones.
- 2:35And then like if they so I just got this like laundry list of
- 2:38things and I was like, I just need to make something that my
- 2:41dogs can have, like cassette chewers.
- 2:43I mean, you know how some dogs just love to chew.
- 2:46That is my dog. Yes, mine.
- 2:51They just, that's all they want to do, I think especially
- 2:53because for me, like I'll give them a kelpie bone to make them
- 2:56settle as well because, you know, working dogs after they've
- 2:59been for a runaround, I feel like sometimes they just need a
- 3:02hand calming down. Yeah, 100%.
- 3:07Yeah, I've got retrievers and exactly the same, especially
- 3:11after they've had a big run or they've been out and they've
- 3:14been socialising with their mates, all that kind of thing.
- 3:17Sometimes they need just a little bit, you know, of an
- 3:20extra hand, you know, and, and it's not just the chewing and
- 3:23the fact that it's, you know, it's good for their teeth and
- 3:25their gums and everything. It's that form of enrichment and
- 3:28it's really soothing for them to.
- 3:30Totally. Like I was reading this research
- 3:32study and it was talking about dogs and when they chew and all
- 3:35the happy hormones that get released, like serotonin and
- 3:38dopamine. Yeah.
- 3:40And like how important it is for them to be able to have that
- 3:43outlet, just like when they dig in the yard or something.
- 3:46Like it's just a dog thing to do.
- 3:48So I really wanted to like, that's why I started because I
- 3:51would love to bring out lots of different toys that aren't made
- 3:55of like just redesigned toys that are already made of plastic
- 3:58but make them out of seaweed. But the first one was I chose
- 4:01was the bone because it's just like it just makes sense for my
- 4:04dogs. And I was selfish.
- 4:05I was like, maybe I just I'll recreate something I want.
- 4:09I know, but it's it's good because that's where that's
- 4:12where so many great business ideas come from.
- 4:14You're solving a problem for yourself.
- 4:17That is, you know. And it's a problem with a lot of
- 4:20other owners have as well. I mean, they don't want them
- 4:23chewing on, on yucky, raw smelling bones in the house and
- 4:27marking the furniture. Every, everything smells like
- 4:30deer. And then you've got dogs that
- 4:32can't digest them or they haven't got the teeth for them,
- 4:35what have you. So, you know, it's, it's a, it's
- 4:39a great option that's healthy, that's sustainable.
- 4:41It's not going to splinter and you don't have that smell.
- 4:45Totally, like when we were designing the bones, we, we
- 4:48really wanted to make sure that when the dogs chew them, it like
- 4:51crumbles off so that you don't have that problem with like
- 4:54sharp edges or splintering. Because that's another thing
- 4:57that my dogs would do. They would chew like crazy and
- 5:00then their gums would be bleeding and I would just be
- 5:02like, Oh my God, what are you doing to yourself?
- 5:05Like they get so excited and they chew so like aggressively
- 5:08almost. But yeah, it was like, it was so
- 5:10interesting when I was trying to find something like before I
- 5:14found not PLA. Who are the people that I get
- 5:16the seaweed from? I was like looking all over and
- 5:19I was like, what, what could I make this bone out of?
- 5:22Like because like when I looked for sustainable options, my dogs
- 5:24didn't really love like a lot that was already there.
- 5:27So I was like, what's going to really make them excited?
- 5:30And then when I did find not fly, I was like, Oh my, that was
- 5:33talking about how great seaweed is.
- 5:35And I know from a sustainability perspective, be weed is so good
- 5:40for the environment. It takes in carbon more than
- 5:43land based forest do. And it's a regenerative plant.
- 5:48So it means it just grows really quickly.
- 5:50So we're not taking up land where our food would be grown or
- 5:53anything like that as its notion.
- 5:55Yeah, I was like, oh, this is a perfect material.
- 5:58Absolutely not. And not only the fact that it's
- 6:00good for their dental health, it's it's good for their general
- 6:03health as well. Just so, so many, you know, so
- 6:06many vitamins and minerals and and all the good stuff in there.
- 6:09I mean normally something you would be looking at adding to
- 6:12their ball anyway. Yeah, yeah, totally.
- 6:14And I think, I think so many people focus on the toy, their
- 6:19food and you know, everyone buying great.
- 6:22Well, a lot of people are buying great quality of food now.
- 6:24And I felt like there was a real gap with their toys.
- 6:27Like if we're buying quality dog food, we shouldn't be feeding
- 6:31them toys that are made from plastic because micro plastics
- 6:35shed off so easily off toys. And there's all this research,
- 6:38especially here in Australia now, they're banning a lot of
- 6:40chemicals that go into plastic. So I was like, this just doesn't
- 6:44make sense if it's so harmful to human health and our wildlife.
- 6:48And, you know, in Australia, we've got so many microblussets
- 6:51even in our soil. I thought, you know, why not?
- 6:54Let's just redesign this. It's, there's no point for us to
- 6:57have plastic anymore. It's for our dogs.
- 7:00Absolutely. Can you tell us a little bit
- 7:02about because I'm I'm curious how they actually use the
- 7:06seaweed to make the bones. Yeah, so it's really
- 7:10interesting. It was an interesting process
- 7:12for me to learn. So basically Nopla takes seaweed
- 7:16and they when you have plastic, plastic is made out of little
- 7:20pellets. Basically it's like little
- 7:22before you process plastics, it's all these little pellets.
- 7:24So Nopla through their technology, they take the
- 7:28seaweed and then they basically make make it into little pellets
- 7:31that are like like plastic resin, but they're not plastic.
- 7:34And then I got, so I got like a little injection mould made and
- 7:39it's kind of made exactly the same way that a plastic toy
- 7:41would be made. It runs through a machine and
- 7:44then it's like stamped into the kelpie, the kelpie bone shape
- 7:49that you can see now. But it was kind of an
- 7:52interesting process because it's seaweed, it doesn't act anything
- 7:55like plastic through the design process.
- 7:58So we had a long, which is why it took us a while to get the
- 8:02product to market was it was a lot of learning on how to
- 8:06process the material because it isn't plastic.
- 8:08So it's very thick. It's kind of difficult to work
- 8:11with in comparison to plastics. Yeah, it was really cool.
- 8:13It's a really good learning curve in the way that I think
- 8:16when going forward, when we make other toys, we're going to know
- 8:19how to make it because I've had quite a few people ask me for
- 8:21like different enrichment toys. And so we're going to be coming
- 8:25out with a super chewer bone, so like a big healthy bone for
- 8:29like, you know, your dogs with like really strong jaws because
- 8:33I've had quite a few people ask me for that.
- 8:35Some people have asked me for puppy versions that are a little
- 8:38bit smaller. So yeah, it's basically just
- 8:41called for a machine. Sorry, that was a really long
- 8:43winded wave. No, that's all right.
- 8:46I was. I was just curious how you got
- 8:48from A to B, but that makes sense.
- 8:50Yeah, yeah, it's really interesting.
- 8:51I mean, the material scientists at Knoppla are amazing.
- 8:55You know, they, they, when they made this technology because
- 8:58originally kelpie bone was. So I saw on Knoppl's website a
- 9:03little spoon and they made single use cutlery with the
- 9:07material I use. And I was like, if it's made
- 9:10into a spoon, surely I can make it into a dog toy.
- 9:13And then Knoppla, like very, very kindly, I reached out to
- 9:16them and they got, I was like, I want to make a dog toy out of
- 9:19it. And I'm sure they went back to
- 9:21their office and they were like, what is this girl talking about?
- 9:23But they they were nice to me. They listened to me.
- 9:28And yeah, we're here now. So I'm very thankful to that
- 9:30team all the way that they're put in in making such a cool
- 9:33product, because I think seaweed is going to save the world.
- 9:37Personally, the list of benefits is just, you know, as as long as
- 9:40your arm on. I mean, besides the
- 9:43environmental and the sustainability side of things,
- 9:46it's just so good for them. But there's so true, there's not
- 9:51a limit really. It's, it's just your imagination
- 9:54and coming up with a different sizes, different shapes,
- 9:57different, you know, different concepts and playing around with
- 10:00it. It's it's amazing.
- 10:01Definitely. And I think I was quite
- 10:03frustrated before I started kelping going.
- 10:05It was because my background is in sustainability and always see
- 10:08kind of the health and I'm I'm a dog mum like my my dogs are my
- 10:12children. So I was yeah, you get it.
- 10:16I feel like a lot of people get it.
- 10:18So I was really frustrated when I went to the pet store and I
- 10:22couldn't find any like brands that I could see myself in, if
- 10:26that makes sense. Like I was like, I just want, I
- 10:28want a natural dog toy that isn't going to like look boring
- 10:32or like I want it to be fun. And when we were creating the
- 10:35brand, my friend Easy did the branding for us.
- 10:39And I really just wanted the whole thing to feel like, you
- 10:43know, like community driven. So when you come into Kelby Bone
- 10:46or you buy a Kelby Bone product, you're a part of a group of
- 10:49people who really care about their dogs, they care about the
- 10:51planet. They want a healthier life for
- 10:54their dog and all of us. I guess so.
- 10:58Yeah, I think it's a great way to approach it.
- 11:01You know, it's when you do it in a way that is creating that
- 11:04sense of community. It's, you know, it has that
- 11:07feeling of warmth and being inviting and Oh yeah, I want to
- 11:11be a part of that. You know, it's definitely the
- 11:14way to go. And it's, it's a really, really
- 11:17good way to not only introduce people, but to keep building on
- 11:22that and introduce new products and introducing educational
- 11:26elements like your social media post that you're doing.
- 11:30I mean, there's, there's just so many, so many different things
- 11:33that you can do with that that goes well beyond one product.
- 11:36Yeah, I completely agree. And I think people are really
- 11:39looking, oh, I know in myself, I'm really looking for that
- 11:42community with dogs. Like, I mean, I think people are
- 11:45kind of, I think a lot of people, I feel like especially,
- 11:49especially a lot of my friends, but they're not having children
- 11:51and their dogs are kind of their kids.
- 11:53And like we we want those like dog moms we can get a coffee
- 11:57with and talk about the new food we're going to give them and
- 12:00obsess over that stuff. So I felt like healthy bone.
- 12:03Yeah, you're the same. If we went for a coffee, we
- 12:05won't do the same thing. Well, certainly.
- 12:08They're our children. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 12:12I think it's definitely the direction that things are going
- 12:15in, in the industry. We're just a little, a little
- 12:19bit slow to catch on to new things sometimes in Australia.
- 12:22I mean, if you look at some of the brands overseas, US, Canada,
- 12:26UK and Asia as well in terms of sustainability, in terms of
- 12:32healthy products, in terms of, you know, raw feeding and those
- 12:35sorts of things, they've got so many more options than we do at
- 12:38the moment. But I mean, we'll get there.
- 12:40Totally. It's amazing.
- 12:41And I think we I just found out this morning that we're going to
- 12:46be in pop up Grocer in New York, which is like a little store
- 12:50over Christmas time. So I'm really excited about
- 12:53that. Yeah.
- 12:55I was like, because I, I also, I see what you're talking about
- 12:58with the US brands when I look over there, I'm like, I wish
- 13:01that we had that type of thing here sometimes.
- 13:04Like they're really, they're really moving towards like the,
- 13:08we do have quite a few like great brands, but I just feel
- 13:11like they have so many of the US normally does.
- 13:14But yeah, so. I think your product will do
- 13:18really well over there because there's nothing that I'm aware
- 13:22of at this point in North America that compares with
- 13:25Kelpie Barn Show. Be prepared to be very busy.
- 13:29I hope so. I'm still, I, I'm still working
- 13:32full time. I don't know how I'm in debt,
- 13:34but I, yeah, I still work full time while balancing kelpie
- 13:37bone. So at the moment I wake up at
- 13:394:00 AM and then I do 2 hours of work before I start and then I
- 13:43work and then I do afterwards. I'm like, oh, hopefully I can go
- 13:46and like be able to, you know, it'd be busy and you know, it
- 13:50grow like that, But I think it's kind of fun bootstrapping it and
- 13:53doing like going through that because I feel like you get such
- 13:56a huge buy in to the company because you do have to do it in
- 14:01all hours of you know that whenever you can come at me.
- 14:05Well, I mean, it's a sensible way to do it.
- 14:07I mean, you don't, you don't want to be living in a tent and
- 14:10and eating 2 minute noodle sort of thing or doing it that way.
- 14:14Is is is smart? Exactly.
- 14:16Yeah, I mean, also true. I was just saying off camera I
- 14:18did the same thing when I launched my my first business.
- 14:21I kept my full time job as well as long as I possibly could.
- 14:25Yeah. And that's the thing, I think.
- 14:27I think it's also something that isn't spoken about enough is
- 14:30that a lot of people that is what you have to do and you out
- 14:33of business. So I like, I know it is great
- 14:36when you know, but like both of us speak out on that.
- 14:39But I think sometimes you can see on such for me, yeah, these
- 14:41people who are working on their business full time and that's
- 14:44not the reality for a lot of people.
- 14:47And you can still, you know. Yeah, exactly.
- 14:49And raising capital, those sorts of things as well.
- 14:52Again, that's not realistic. So everybody.
- 14:55Know exactly? Pretty much everyone that I know
- 14:59who's ever had a business, it started as a sign hustle.
- 15:02Yeah, me too. And think I think, you know,
- 15:06like a big part of when I was building Kelpie and I really
- 15:08wanted to be really out there in the fact that I live in a van.
- 15:12You know, I have a full time job.
- 15:14Like all these things was because I think that there's so
- 15:16many people that have really good ideas but don't go after
- 15:20them because they're like, oh, I've got work or, you know, all
- 15:24those bits and pieces. Yeah, true, but a lot of us are
- 15:28also bored sometimes in our full time jobs.
- 15:31And so, you know, it's a way that you can experiment without
- 15:34losing that security or you might love your full time job,
- 15:38but you love this other thing too.
- 15:40And there's no reason why, you know, you can't, you can't do
- 15:43both, at least for a while and, and see where it goes.
- 15:46Well, I know that you've got another meeting that you've got
- 15:48to get to, so we will let you go.
- 15:50But thank you so much. It's been so lovely chatting
- 15:53with you and we, we need to, we need to catch up again, I think.
- 15:57You so much.
