Coming to you from the in-store studio at Everyday Cycles in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood, unrehearsed, unapologetic, and all up in your ear, this is the Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast with Sven and JK.
• 0:16
[maracas rattling] I have ice cubes in here. Right on. [laughs] Got your headphones on. Are you all set? Yes. Maracas. Hey, ladies and gentlemen, it's that time again, Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast from
• 0:31
the Everyday Cycles studio here in, uh, Riverwest, Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Right here, here, here, here, here. Here. Oh, man.
• 0:40
Does it seem like two weeks went by already since we did one of these [maracas rattling] fakakta things? Ah, it... Yes. Yes and no. I don't know. There's, like, two different versions of myself out there right now.
• 0:52
[laughs] Kind of. I'm like, "What? What? Holidays?" Say what you will, no matter what, if you're invested or not invested, the season takes a toll on you. This is true.
• 1:07
Did you actually get out and do any shopping outside the house? Or did you do all Amazon? Uh- Or other online, potentially online- [laughs]... things? Besides the one that I know about. No, I didn't. I really didn't.
• 1:24
Oh, no, no, no. No, I went to a Marcus, uh, Theater- For-... to buy a gift card. Right on. [laughs] For a $5 Tuesday. [laughs] I was like, "I can't think of anything, but here is $25, and go watch a movie."
• 1:41
Be like, "Here's $5 and a free popcorn. Come on." [laughs] Well, that was the, the whole dance of like, "Oh, you get $5 extra- Right on... for stuff." They need more cycling movies in the Marcus theaters.
• 1:56
Yeah, bring back, like, Break, Breaking Away for, like, a- Well-... weekend engagement... yeah.
• 2:02
Uh, there was some screening of some other, uh, more adventure-oriented one which I can't even remember, 'cause I wasn't thinking about it, but it's in some of the smaller theaters around the old world, but [clears throat]
• 2:13
you'll probably have to figure that out on your own since I don't remember what it is. Gutters. [laughs] All right, I gotta watch the damn movie now [laughs] very, very damn soon again. Is it on the Netflix?
• 2:26
Probably not. Eh, it makes an engagement once in a while. Yeah. Gotta do the dance between all the streaming platforms. God damn it, I want french fries. [laughs] American food. I want no more EE foods.
• 2:37
[laughs] I want American food. [laughs] Ah, yes. Dovetailing, dovetailing. A classic. Wee. So holidays were good. I heard you had a, you had a fire last night and- Yes, I made a good fire. Worked out well.
• 2:52
Ended up with a lot more wood than I needed, and it worked out nicely, and no wind. Everything was cool. Also, nice escape place- Yeah... [laughs] Yeah...
• 3:04
from the din of normal holiday stuff, going like, "I gotta look at the fire." [laughs] Are you all done now, or do you have other obligations? Nope. All's done till the [laughs] annual use of a, uh, picture ride.
• 3:18
[laughs] Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's coming up on the 1st of January here in Milwaukee, isn't it? Oh, yes. I have the picture right here.
• 3:26
[laughs] I'm gonna show it to you, but everybody else [laughs] maybe I'll use this as the, uh [laughs] as the intro to the show this week. Oh, the, but the pirouette leading up to that was- I wish we coulda made a-...
• 3:39
just as, just as heartbreaking... Oh, I wish I coulda made a GIF out of that. [laughs] Didn't somebody video that? Between me and Berger, we were, like, the two that just stared and [laughs]
• 3:51
And, uh- Just couldn't stop laughing... did, did GIF, uh, animated GIF technology exist back then in the... When... That was what? 8, 10 years ago now? It... Right, right... eight years ago. I don't know.
• 4:01
It was a, it was a while back. It probably was there. I can tell you this, it's pre when Ramsey had a, a fat bike for sure, so- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah... that's quite some time ago. Yeah, yeah. It was, like, a... Yeah.
• 4:13
Well, you could do it with, like, a bunch of pictures and make it like a flip book. Yeah. Oh, yeah, that'd be good. Yeah. That's old timey. Yep.
• 4:20
Or we could just do it in stop motion and make a T-shirt out of it- [laughs]... which I'm kinda working on, so I have the picture. [laughs] Amen, amen, amen. Hallelujah. I think everybody'll dig it.
• 4:29
[laughs] And if you don't, I don't care. [laughs] Oh, it's a grand joke. So did you give and/or receive giftises? Yes. I, uh, I received,
• 4:44
which is funny, via the, the shop some of the... I can't pronounce them, so I'm gonna move this a little bit this way. Burgraven Gaiters. Yeah. [laughs] 45 North Gaiters. They're awesome.
• 5:01
I, I'm wondering if- Completely unexpected. I was like, "Um, uh, huh, hey." They don't- I don't, I don't know that they're going to make them again.
• 5:08
They kind of discontinued them, which was why it was such a great idea to get them, because they weren't the 7 or 800 bucks they might've been if they were full on. Right, right, right. Yeah, yeah. Good thing.
• 5:19
Yeah, yeah. I, I picked up a pair for myself because, like, you know, you never know when you need gaiters. Exactly. Not for alligators, but for snow, actually. Oh, yeah, for sure. Right. Okay.
• 5:29
[laughs] And I picked up a couple fenders. Girlfriend ended up with a new fat bike and, hey, little bit of fender, fendering action. Right on. So it was well received. All done via you, good sir.
• 5:47
[laughs] And you had to, like, keep your mouth shut about what she got me- I, uh-... and I had to-... God... and what I got her. [laughs] With, you know, with the, with that...
• 5:56
We had a play date, Mike, JK, Mike, Mike JK, JK Mike, and I had a- Had a play date a a week ago Monday. Well, past week ago, to, what, back then a little bit. Right, right.
• 6:06
Being a little bit, uh, on the end of that, right, it's like, "Hey, you sh- just see what you're gonna get." [laughs] Well, and the fun part was, uh, during the giving of said gifts, they...
• 6:25
She couldn't find it. [laughs] Ah. So there was, like, a whole house load, "No, it's around here somewhere. It's around here somewhere." And I don't know what the hell anyone's talking about.
• 6:40
They're like, "No, no, no, you can't..." Like, you know, if they told me what to look for, that kinda kills the gift. I don't know. [laughs] It, it, it- It wa- it was weird. It was very strange.
• 6:52
It was very surreal, where it was like, "No, it's around here somewhere."
• 6:57
[laughs] It was, like, left on, on, on my bike desk, but it was, like, one of those things that was, like, hiding in plain sight, that I didn't even see it. Nice. I didn't even notice it. Was it wrapped? No.
• 7:10
Oh, well, there you go. No. [laughs] It was... I mean, it wa- it, uh, apparently it was there for, like, a few days. I don't know. You know, forest for the trees and what have you. Excellent.
• 7:19
[laughs] Well, I think my family now knows better than to get me any cycling gifts since I usually just buy myself what [laughs] I want anyway. They got me a gift for the shop. I don't know if you can smell it.
• 7:33
[sniffs] [sighs] I put it in the back room because it's [laughs] very pungent. It's supposed to make it smell less like a dirty bike shop and more like the Northwoods or something. Oh, what is it?
• 7:44
It's sort of a little- I have a really bad sensory- It's sort of a little oily thingy. Like, you- Oh, okay. I'll diffuse it. If you go back and- Oil diffuser thingy...
• 7:50
if, if you go back and get a beer, you might smell it, 'cause it's in the front- Fair enough... room there. Fair enough. I thought it might waft, waft, waft out of the, the door, you know, and sort of- No.
• 7:58
If it, if it were aggressive-... infuse the air... I would let you know. Oh, I was almost crying when I s- fired it up- [laughs]... 'cause I think they're a little on the- [laughs]...
• 8:04
I don't know, you know, s- strong side when they first start going. But hopefully, uh, people's olfactory senses are not assaulted when they walk [laughs] in the front door. Yeah, they walk in, damn patchouli. Oh, fuck.
• 8:15
[groans] Oh, no. I- Hippy, hippy store... I didn't, I didn't start with one of those. No, no, no, no. [laughs] No, this is balsam northwoods and, and, and cedar and whatnot.
• 8:23
[laughs] Kind of like- Like the beard oil smell. [laughs] Well, it's like, you know, it's like you're up in, in Hayward at the CAMBA, you know, trails or something.
• 8:33
'Cause it's all northwoods-y and, and I don't think there's a tree up there that's not an evergreen, so. Oh, I kept throwing in, uh... Had a bunch of, um, boughs, evergreen boughs.
• 8:44
Oh, into the, into the- Kept throwing in the fires. Nice. And it was fun. Crackly, crackly. Yep, yep, yep. And smelling good. Smelling good. Hey, s- you know, we could kind of go out of- [laughs]...
• 8:54
go out of order here and talk about [laughs] an event that CAMBA's throwing up, just 'cause, uh- Right. Yeah...
• 8:59
you know, they're, uh, they're up there in the Northwoods/Hayward area, and they've got themselves a, a race they got going up there called The Big Fat Race. January 19th,
• 9:09
2019, not '18, 'cause that would've been last year. And, uh, yeah, it's sort of a, apparently a leisurely, self-supported 14-mile race.
• 9:19
Well, I guess you could make it unleisurely if you're trying to win it, but- [laughs]... uh, you know. You know, it's going right out of Seeley there at the old Sawmill Saloon. Saloon.
• 9:29
My favorite place in that Hayward/ uh, Seeley/ you know, cable area up there. Oh, I, oh, I flaked out. I was thinking of Eagle for some reason. When, when are you- Yeah. It's, it's still north of here. Right, right.
• 9:43
But yeah, I'll have some link in the show notes maybe or something. But, uh, you probably already know about it if you're gonna go to it. And if you don't, they've got some snow up there finally, I guess. Maybe.
• 9:53
A little bit. Somebody- Yeah... somebody got snow? That's awesome. We had snow for about, like, three hours. I woke up la- yesterday, Christmas Day, seeing a white Christmas. I'm like, "Oh, I got my present." Yeah.
• 10:06
That was cool. And then wait for it. [laughs] Yeah. In literally two hours. Well, it was 40 degrees again today- Yeah, yeah, yeah... here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
• 10:18
And I think, what is it supposed to be, close to 50 tomorrow with a bunch of rain. Mm-hmm. Then it gets cold. Mm-hmm. And maybe some snow in the air that's going to disintegrate on the ground. Ah, sad.
• 10:31
I was looking forward to some snow on the 1st that originally the forecast was showing it, then it wasn't, now it's kinda like maybe. That'd be nice if we get a couple inches on our, on our annual use of a picture ride.
• 10:42
Yeah. [laughs] I will stay upright again this year, I tell you. Well, I've missed it the last couple years, what with n- not being in town and working out there in the Lost Wages, uh, Desert.
• 10:54
[laughs] Which, by the way, isn't bad to ride. There's some really good trails around there. Oh, I could imagine. I was, it was s- gee, I have to go back out there again, by the way, folks, on the 6th of the January.
• 11:06
And I'll be out there only for a couple of weeks this time. Not even. More like 10 days.
• 11:10
But, uh, do a little work, try to keep the shop doors open, go earn some real money, and then come back here and throw it out the front door.
• 11:16
And w- you know, we might put a show on the can just to make sure to sate your appetites. Well, if you guys are expecting a show every two weeks, we probably ought to do something.
• 11:26
So either we'll, either we'll do something or- [laughs]... or I'll do something, or we'll put some dead air on there for you to listen to. [laughs] Needless to say, there will be a show.
• 11:35
The content may be- Something will happen... somewhat blathering. Yes. Brilliance. From, from bro- [laughs] From blather comes brilliance. Yes. There we go. T-shirt number two- [laughs]...
• 11:48
in the, in the lineup will be some, some variation of a theme that- [laughs]... says, "From blather comes brilliance." Dun, dun, dun, dun. Copyright JK Living, or, or m- someone of us. Somewhere. Somewhere. Out there.
• 12:05
Excellent. Um, what else we got? Oh, you know what else? We had another eventy thing. We had that Shell Track thing that went off that we talked about going to- Oh, yes...
• 12:16
that we actually went to, so we can talk something about it. Exactly. It was a good... That was a, that was a fun course. Yeah, it was- As, as we were gonna hijack [laughs] Right, right, right.
• 12:26
But- It was warm and no snow, but the nice thing about the Shell Track course is it, it is on a beach, and there is quite a bit of sand, and
• 12:34
you are pretty much gonna need a fat bike for a good portion of the course, whether there's any snow or not, whether it's 70 out or, you know, 20 below. So it's like a mile long. It's got some elevation.
• 12:45
It's got some, uh, some twisties and turnies, and then a nice fast section along the lake. And, uh, they do a bunch of different classes before we show up. Yeah.
• 12:54
[laughs] For, for the people that like getting up early in the morning and actually racing. Um- Yeah, I think, I think they went, uh, what was it? Beginner, beginner. Yeah, those guys.
• 13:04
Beginner, intermediate, advanced, and then, then to the relay. Yeah. Elite- Then to the relay... yeah, elite is the, the fast guys. Yeah. Hey, speaking of elite, we, uh, the elite guys were really fast. Yeah.
• 13:18
Uh, and, uh, we were lucky enough to get a brief interview with Cole House, who was the winner of said elite class, not quite lapping the entire field [laughs] but- [laughs]... coming dang close. Right.
• 13:31
Um, he's just a machine. So, uh, why don't we go ahead and s- stick that puppy in right here. Hey, Sven here at the, uh, Shell Track Fat Trike races, uh, with the elite w- class winner, Cole House.
• 13:43
Hey, Cole, how, how was the course out there today? Oh, it was great. Uh, no snow, so it's super fast. I actually brought studded tires, testing out these new, uh... Well, they're not new.
• 13:54
Everybody else had them except for me, but- [laughs]... the 27.5 Dillinger 4 studdeds. Uh, first time on 27.5 tires. They're fast, which they- How's it coming around this last turn onto the pavement with the studs?
• 14:06
Uh, it, they're fine. Uh, the studs are just...
• 14:08
I figured we're down in this little valley, and I figured there'd be some ice or something somewhere on the course, and I don't really like to mess around on the ice, so [laughs] I hear that.
• 14:17
I just put the studded tires on here and- All right. The advanced race-... everything was good... will begin soon... it rolled fast. It's only like 100 grams difference on the tires- Next race is gonna be relay two-...
• 14:24
with studs or- Yeah. Right on... 100 grams with tires, so I've got the Dilly 5s on my other bike, so I, I, I love the studs. 20 laps. Yeah.
• 14:30
I- Makes, uh, makes winter riding a thing of the funness- We will have one lap-... uh, especially on the lake when it gets all moonscapy and whatnot Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. No, the course is fast, dry, uh, some sweet...
• 14:39
There's a couple of greasy spots. Um, but other than that, it was all good. Um- What are you racing for this year?
• 14:45
Do, uh, Pete's Garage and Borealis, and then, uh, component sponsor FSA as usual, and, uh, Head Wheels, 45 North Gear and Tires. So, um- What do you got?
• 14:55
What are you looking forward to for, uh, the biggest races of the year? Oh, I don't know. I haven't even looked at the schedule yet. [laughs] It's like- [laughs] Just coming off cross season, so...
• 15:02
this is like, there's no snow yet, and we're thinking about fat bike racing. [laughs] Yeah, there's not even no snow yet. We can't really think too far ahead right now. Right on. Um,
• 15:09
I know the Borealis guys had mentioned something about Fat Bike Worlds. Um, think
• 15:15
probably do all the Snow Crowned races just 'cause there's a good variety of races, and, you know, unlike the other races, they're either all single track or they're all double track, or not even double track, like 40-foot wide ski trail, which I'm not a huge fan of.
• 15:30
Right on. Um, so I think just riding races that are fun, and, uh, promoting the bikes and the shop, own brand. Excellent. So. Cool. Well, thanks for taking the time to talk to us.
• 15:40
Uh, I'll probably catch up with you at the next race. Yeah, thanks. Right on. Cole House, everybody. You are listening to the Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast with Sven and JK. Hey, that was cool.
• 15:52
I, I, I liked, uh, being able to, uh, talk to Cole, and, um, uh, Jeff Scanlon, our, our buddy Jeff was up there racing in the Enduro with, uh, Captain Lunz and, um, and Boner. [laughs] Oh, uh, Chuck Willie. Chuck Willie.
• 16:09
Uh, and Jeff was just... I, I swear he was gushing. [laughs] "Mister, Mister House, sir. Mister House, do you mind if I, uh... Can I get a picture with you, please?" [laughs] "You, you don't mind, do you?"
• 16:19
"No, man, that's cool." Uh, "Oh, man, that's so great seeing Cole up here," blah, blah, blah. Yeah, it was funny. A- as, as I went down, and all of a sudden I looked over at you, and you're like, "Boom, hey," [laughs]
• 16:32
and we're on. [laughs] No. Have, have microphone, will travel. [laughs] Is a mark of a man. Oh, man. A night with a lumber and a savage land. Paladin. [laughs] Sorry. [laughs] Heard something.
• 16:50
Excellent. Your line. Uh, what else? What do you got? You got anything? I got something. You got something? I don't know. It's Boxing Day, as we're recording this- Oh, yeah... which that's a thing. Which means you what?
• 17:02
Like, not fighting, but- No... what is it? No, it's like- Unboxing or boxing up your crap you didn't want or? No, I think it's like... I, I think it's like it's UK, Australia, and... [clicking] Canada do it? Canada. Eh?
• 17:18
Yeah. It, it, it's something where, like, we're... You give the help [laughs] like gifts. Oh, I would have- It's like, it's like, or it's something weird like that...
• 17:27
well, I gave my- I, I'm not sure what the- I don't know... the whole thing. I gave my kids gifts- I'm very ignorant on it... J- I, I gave the help- my kids the help, quote-unquote, uh, gifts yesterday.
• 17:37
So why would they get them again today? Right, right. [laughs] No wonder we don't have them in this, in this country. Nah, I'm not sure what the whole- It's-... dance is on it, but
• 17:46
if you want to inform me, you can call 717-727-BIKE. That's 717-727-2453. We had a call in last week. [laughs] Oh, my. I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll- Let's just go to the tape. Yeah.
• 18:03
Well, it was obviously, uh- [laughs]... we'll just throw that in here because, uh, it was 11:30 at night on a, I don't know what day, a, a, a non-working day I would imagine when, uh- [laughs]...
• 18:14
when Puck called in with a couple of words of wisdom, so[laughs] Here you go. 717-727-BIKE. 2453 doesn't spell Mike, jackass. But it does spell bike. You're still an ass.
• 18:32
All right. Thanks for those words of wisdom there, Dave. Hi. Uh, I wa- I, I was gonna leave this till the end, but I think it's appropriate here.
• 18:40
Uh, some catchphrases may be copyright daverunns.com, and those phrases- [laughs]... may be derivative of other, more famous people. Please don't sue us.com Chicken Bell.
• 18:52
[laughs] There's still an ongoing debate about the lineage of the Chicken Bell. [laughs] So what's coming up? What are you thinking? I know I'm enjoying the prospect of the New Year's Day extravaganza.
• 19:10
It's usually a good time. Yeah. We watch the, uh, polar bears jump in the lake. Exactly. Endure that for a little bit. Bring some beers down, watch them. Boom, ba-boom. Roll self, and then figure out from there.
• 19:25
[laughs] Yeah. Possibly, possibly a swing indoor stop. There's almost... Yeah, that almost has to happen. Almost guaranteed.
• 19:31
[laughs] I, I briefly, for about 13 seconds, thought about jumping in the lake with those guys, but then I thought, "Nah." I've fallen in that lake before- The idea is-... in the winter...
• 19:42
sound, but I just can't possibly think about doing that. No, it's cold. No. You don't wanna go in there on purpose probably. No. I mean, if you fall in, you know, it's cold. You know, then you deal with it. But, yeah.
• 19:53
Yeah, I fell in that damn little crick up by Harrington that one time, and it was 40 degrees, and I hated life for the next hour and a half. Yes, it was chilling.
• 20:04
[laughs] Well, we're supposed to be close to 30, I think high 20s, so it's not like, uh, last year, I guess. Yeah. I understand it was cold. I wasn't here. Uh- But, uh, heard it was cold...
• 20:15
I'm under the impression that Lloyd's gonna be doing his... You never know. Let's see what happens on that one. I can't guarantee it. [laughs] Well, he's making the claim, so this'll be his sixth or seventh year.
• 20:27
So- Right... it's a cool thing. Coming up, El Zion. Yeah, that's the day I leave. Oh, yeah. Damn it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I gotta fly out at 6:00 in the morning, otherwise I'd try and figure- fit that ride in.
• 20:40
But, uh, Fatter By The Lake- Right... number, number seven already. Yeah, that's always a good time. Little loop around the nuke plant and- Yeah, yeah... down- Greg River.
• 20:50
[laughs] Down by the Superfund site there on the, uh, on the southern shore of Zion, Illinois.
• 20:58
You know, if y'all wanna go to that, you should just go ahead and give Chris at Zion Cyclery a call and figure out when it is and where it is. Or look, look it up on, on the Book Face 'cause- Well, yeah, yeah...
• 21:08
yeah, it's a- It's, um, uh, we're meeting up 11:00, 11:30 rollout. And what is it? Do, do, do, do, Sunday the 6th. Correct. Sunday the 6th. Boom. That's usually a really good time, and he's had a, a, a good- Yeah.
• 21:24
It's a slow roll all the way down there, and then- Yeah... not being a whole way through... good turnout, lots of beer maybe, if you're one of- Yeah... those kind of people. Indeedy. Perhaps a White Castle stop.
• 21:34
[laughs] Back and forth. [laughs] In, in, inevitably. And hey, Fritz's Corner in Zion, Illinois, Local H song. Uh, those two guys made a lot of noise for two guys. Mm-hmm. I'm telling you.
• 21:50
Snow Crown Series keeps going. Yeah. Fat ish way the hell up [laughs] in Michigan. You know, being, being- I thought it was gonna be kind of semi-lo- and I was like, "Wait, Michigan. Whoa, okay."
• 22:07
Well, you know, being based in, um, I guess those guys are... Uh, the team that does a lot of that is, uh, based in Green Bay. Yeah, yeah. So it's, it's like two hours- Oh, it makes sense. Yeah, it makes sense...
• 22:15
yeah, they're kind of the epicenter, which is- Yeah, yeah... a good spot to be from if you're gonna go to those faraway races. For sure. For sure. I was just doing it selfishly and locally and going like, "Oh my God."
• 22:25
[laughs] Well, that said, you know, like, uh, the- It's a good road trip to go on... the ladies' winner from Shell Track, Leah Rollins/Schneeberger-berger, was, uh, they're from Madison, I think, and that was...
• 22:38
You know, it's a lot further from Madison to Manitowoc than you think, 'cause you're kind of- Oh, yeah... traversing double track most of the way.
• 22:44
[laughs] That's why Spinner said he wasn't gonna make it, 'cause it was, you know, four hours from Madison or something. Oh, geez.
• 22:51
[laughs] So I, I think maybe you could've gone to Milwaukee and up there, and it'd have been three hours instead of angling across the farmer's fields and whatnot, but- Mm-hmm... it's not me. Work smarter, not harder.
• 23:02
Right. Right. Drive, drive further, not slower. Three left, make a right. Right on. Snow Crown Series up in Michigan. Uh, hmm. Hey, I found something cool on the internet. The zoo is free.
• 23:18
Has nothing to do with any races. [laughs] On- The zoo is free this week. [laughs] All week? Yeah, until the 1st. Oh, nice.
• 23:27
Well, I didn't get our zoo pass like we normally get for my mom, 'cause my kids are getting too old, so. Plus parking's getting really expensive, so. That's... I just don't go there.
• 23:41

• 24:24
He does stuff, I think the way he does it because he doesn't have a bunch of other people he rides with, so he just makes up stuff on his own and
• 24:32
he's now a Red Bull guy and, and this is real- I'm gonna put the link in the show notes 'cause, like, in the first 15 seconds of this thing you're like, [laughs] "Oh, man, that's cool." [laughs] Indeed, indeed.

• 26:18
In fact, it's worth going back and watching a couple of the previous ones too if you haven't- Oh, yeah... seen them. For sure. 'Cause it, it's interesting watching him being from here, we're just like, "Oh, yeah.
