• 0:12
Speaker 1: He's also got an event coming up but I want to focus on that car show judging clinic Absolutely.
• 0:17
Speaker 1: I mean, anybody that has ever gone to a car show would be interested in that, if you're a real car person for two aspects.
• 0:26
Speaker 1: One is the judging aspect, but also to go to a car show and see what the judges are looking for, and then you can be your own judge or you can take the information back to your club and say, look at this, we've got this and I've got the info, I know how to do it, all of that sort of thing.
• 0:47
Speaker 3: Why did you pick that one over that one, that's right 20 bucks.
• 0:52
Speaker 3: And we're also going to have the automotive news headlines this week.
• 0:55
Speaker 1: We got to get that in, by the way.

• 1:11
Speaker 3: Yeah, perfect for us.
• 1:13
Speaker 1: And I'm going to tell you something.
• 1:14
Speaker 1: Inside, it's like looking at a black chalkboard right here in front of your eyes, because you can't see a thing.
• 1:20
Speaker 1: But this is so.
• 1:21
Speaker 1: You can look at the sun and see the eclipse that's going to happen at noon central time here in Southeast Texas.
• 1:29
  Speaker 1: All right, ready.
• 1:32
Speaker 3: I wonder Steve, what are these?
• 1:34
Speaker 1: So Vernon is going to join us on his iPhone, apparently?
• 1:37
Speaker 1: Yes, because he doesn't have any video.
• 1:40
Speaker 2: Yeah, we're a little problem You're going to have to look at us while we talk to Vernon.
• 1:43
Speaker 1: It's kind of like a phone call.
• 1:46
Speaker 4: Not a video call, it is a phone call.
• 1:47
Speaker 4: It is a phone.
• 1:49
Speaker 1: Okay so anyway, Vernon Wilhelm.
• 1:52
Speaker 1: Good morning sir, good morning guys.
• 1:55
Speaker 1: Hey, thanks so much for joining us.
• 1:56
  Speaker 1: We appreciate you.
• 1:57
  Speaker 1: Northside Mustang Club.
• 1:59
Speaker 1: This is Randy Weldon kind of a thing with Randy.
• 2:04
Speaker 2: Randy's very involved in it yeah.
• 2:06
  Speaker 2: He's involved in a lot.
• 2:08
Speaker 1: Randy Randy, well, you know, it's kind of like Dandruff.
• 2:12
Speaker 1: It's really hard to get rid of.
• 2:18
  Speaker 2: It's always there.
• 2:19
Speaker 4: Gotta have hair to have Dandruff down.
• 2:21
  Speaker 4: I'm out.
• 2:22
  Speaker 1: You're out?
• 2:22
Speaker 1: Well, no, you're not.
• 2:23
  Speaker 4: So is.
• 2:24
  Speaker 1: Randy, exactly.
• 2:25
Speaker 1: So you guys have an event coming up here pretty quick.
• 2:33
Speaker 5: Yes, we got an event coming up on November 4th.
• 2:35
Speaker 5: Right now we're right at about 80 vehicles already registered for the show.
• 2:41
Speaker 5: We expect probably at least that amount coming in.
• 2:45
Speaker 5: So we're probably looking at around 150 cars at this event is our hopes.
• 2:50
Speaker 1: And what is the event?
• 2:51
Speaker 1: Is this strictly a Mustang event?
• 2:53
Speaker 5: No, this is an open event.
• 2:55
Speaker 5: There's 45 classes, all the way from the Chevy's Dodge Inports, fords, everything, everything is there.
• 3:09
Speaker 5: We have a little bit of everything.
• 3:11
Speaker 5: Matter of fact, we even have a place for that electric car, really Okay.
• 3:17
  Speaker 3: So you've got 45 classes.
• 3:18
Speaker 3: How many did you back?
• 3:19
Speaker 3: But they got a place for it.
• 3:21
Speaker 3: How many judges are you using?
• 3:24
Speaker 5: Well, we'll probably have 10 to 12 judges at the show.
• 3:29
Speaker 1: Good, and you're going to have them split up for specialty stuff, this bunch of judges for these classes of cars and then this bunch for a different class, that kind of thing.
• 3:40
Speaker 5: Yes, we do not.
• 3:41
Speaker 5: The way that I set up these shows are a judge will only judge this one class and he will judge the same class so that that class is getting the fairness from one judge and his perspective of the vehicle throughout there.
• 3:55
Speaker 5: We don't have two people doing two different class or the same class.
• 3:58
Speaker 5: Otherwise we get a little bit of range on personal preference and things like that.
• 4:03
Speaker 5: So we try to keep that to the one judge throughout the entire show.
• 4:07
Speaker 1: So if you've got 12 cars in the class, that means that that one judge is going to have 11 guys going after him out of the parking lot because they did.
• 4:16
  Speaker 2: It's better than 125.
• 4:18
  Speaker 2: Well, there's that.
• 4:19
Speaker 1: There's that, I'm just teasing, I know how it works.
• 4:22
Speaker 1: Yeah, I get it.
• 4:23
Speaker 1: So that's going to be on November the 4th, is that right?
• 4:29
Speaker 5: Yes, from nine till two, we'll have the awards at two we have.
• 4:34
Speaker 5: We actually have indoor parking, actually indoor parking.
• 4:38
Speaker 5: When we put this on the website, in two weeks, indoor parking was gone.
• 4:42
Speaker 5: We still have a little bit of covered parking left, and then we, of course, we got all the outdoor parking, and so where is it going to be held?
• 4:48
Speaker 5: Bulls Hollis Park in New.
• 4:50
  Speaker 1: Cane.
• 4:51
Speaker 1: Wow, they've got undercover parking and stuff like that.
• 4:55
Speaker 4: So basically, yes, roughly the intersection of 99 and 69, kind of the northwest corner of that intersection Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha.
• 5:03
Speaker 1: Okay so, and I see that you just so happened to have a thing called the Northside Mustang judging clinic clinic and a clinic to learn how to judge a car at a car show.
• 5:21
Speaker 1: And, as I mentioned I don't know whether you heard it or not, but this would be good for anybody really to go to If you're in the cars, whether you're a judge of that car show or not, to gain the knowledge of what a judge looks for when he's judging a car.
• 5:35
Speaker 1: And obviously there's all different ranges of judges.
• 5:41
Speaker 1: Some are particularly focused on antiques, classics, customs, those kind of specific people, categories, categories, thank you, and but it would be good for anybody to go to.
• 5:59
Speaker 5: But yeah, there's also, you know there is the training also, not besides just the stuff that you're looking for, whether it be cleanliness, workmanship, creativity.
• 6:08
Speaker 5: You know the stories behind the vehicle from the owners, but You're also we want to go over the etiquette on how to judge a car.
• 6:17
Speaker 5: How do you correspond with the car owner?
• 6:20
Speaker 5: Those kind of things you want to understand.
• 6:26
Speaker 5: How many miles has the guy driven his car?
• 6:29
Speaker 5: What does he put behind it?
• 6:30
Speaker 5: Those kind of things we want to understand when we talk to them, the story behind the car.
• 6:41
Speaker 5: A little bit there, let them understand, introduce ourselves, make them understand what we've got going on, what we're going to be doing.
• 6:53
Speaker 5: Then, of course, when you finish, you'll thank him for bringing his car and you know, beautiful car, those kind of things.
• 7:03
Speaker 5: Those are the kind of things there's more to it than just the actual going out there and actually going over the car.
• 7:09
Speaker 5: I mean because we want these people to continue coming back to these shows, whether it's ours or anybody else's show.
• 7:19
Speaker 5: They're not going to do that if they're not treated fairly Well.
• 7:22
Speaker 5: I have to tell you that.
• 7:24
Speaker 1: I'm a big fan of Wayne Corini I was watching they had taken a car that he had to a very prestigious I don't know whether it was Pebble Beach one of those really prestigious shows.
• 7:37
Speaker 1: One of the things that I had never experienced in all of my years of showing a car was the judges going up to Wayne and the actual owner of the car and the guy that prepared the car and there was kind of like a little back and forth between them and the guy that prepared the car and the owner were pointing out things to the judge.
• 8:01
Speaker 1: These are the things that I have done.
• 8:03
Speaker 1: I've taken particularly care of this sort of thing and a little bit more about the car than the judge might have known the story behind the story behind the car, where the car came from, all of the work that had been performed to the car prior to the show, the details, the paint, all of the things that was important to the car owner and the builder of the car for the judge that they felt it was necessary for the judge to know.
• 8:31
Speaker 1: And I thought that that was really something.
• 8:33
Speaker 1: I'd never experienced, that personally when I showed my car.
• 8:38
Speaker 5: You know I'm an MCA National Gold Car Judge and one of the first things I do at the national events, the first thing when I introduce myself and talk to them, I ask them if there's anything that's happened to the car on their trip, because it's unfair to judge.
• 8:54
Speaker 5: You know, somebody gets a rock chip because they're coming down the road to get to the show.
• 8:59
Speaker 5: They don't have time to get those fixed and you can tell by the type of car and what they do with the car that this is not the norm for them.
• 9:10
Speaker 5: But you want to make sure that you're looking for those kind of things when you judge that car.
• 9:16
Speaker 1: Well, that and the fact that, look, you don't know, when you see the car and or the owner, that what neither one of them have been through, this might be a Don Armstrong that's never been to a show.
• 9:30
Speaker 1: He's showing his car for the first time and he's got the car locked up in the hood and the and the trunk closed like a moron because I didn't know.
• 9:39
  Speaker 1: Why.
• 9:40
Speaker 1: Are you looking at me when?
• 9:40
Speaker 4: you say that we always leave you, because I leave my trunk closed, because my truck's full of stuff?
• 9:46
Speaker 1: Yeah, we know that and what's piled on top, and you're obviously feeling very guilty about it.
• 9:52
Speaker 4: No, not at all.
• 9:52
Speaker 4: You have to have a con con front conscience before it can feel guilty.
• 9:57
Speaker 1: Well, I guess so.
• 9:58
Speaker 1: But yeah, so Conrad, conrad really is not a car show judge, car show kind of guy, and I've had to kind of guide him.
• 10:08
Speaker 1: At least roll down the windows, conrad, so people can see inside.
• 10:12
Speaker 1: Get all the crap out of the back seat.
• 10:15
Speaker 4: I throw it in.
• 10:15
Speaker 4: I did throw it in the trunk and I organize the seat belts so they look nice.
• 10:19
  Speaker 1: That's it.
• 10:20
Speaker 1: You get those things when you go to a car show.
• 10:24
Speaker 1: But just like, well, how do I apply that to my car?
• 10:26
Speaker 1: Well, this is how.
• 10:30
Speaker 5: Oh, and that's something that we talk to the owners.
• 10:32
  Speaker 5: I might ask.
• 10:33
Speaker 5: The car show up in Sillsby judging there was an individual that brought his cheap in and he didn't have the hood open.
• 10:39
Speaker 5: And I explained to him, just went over with him and said look, he goes.
• 10:43
Speaker 5: Well, it's not clean.
• 10:44
Speaker 5: I said, well, lift the hood, you get some points.
• 10:48
Speaker 5: A closed hood gets you zero points.
• 10:50
Speaker 5: An open hood maybe only come out instead of the 10 points you only get five points or six points because you didn't get to that part of cleaning.
• 10:58
Speaker 5: But you still got some points.
• 11:01
  Speaker 1: Correct.
• 11:01
Speaker 1: True, and not only that, but if you open the hood, if you've done nothing to it, it gets points.
• 11:07
Speaker 1: Just because it's a stock engine, it gets points.
• 11:11
Speaker 4: And if you're, you know you have the desire to, you might actually go in there and clean it up a little bit.
• 11:17
Speaker 1: So it looks a little bit better.
• 11:18
Speaker 1: Yeah, get you some kerosene on a rag and go over the stuff.
• 11:21
Speaker 2: Yeah, wipe the stuff off.
• 11:22
Speaker 2: But that also helps the show because people want to see what you got under that hood.
• 11:27
Speaker 2: Yeah, and like if the Jeep and it's a little dirty, people look at it's a Jeep, it's supposed to be dirty.
• 11:33
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 11:33
Speaker 1: If it gets it's got some off road mud caked up underneath the hood.
• 11:38
  Speaker 1: That's okay, yeah.
• 11:40
Speaker 2: You know, from a spectator perspective, so which all enhances the show as well as the judging I've actually seen a Jeep shown that it looked like it just came off the Rubicon, with mud up and down the side of it, there you go.
• 11:53
Speaker 1: And then it's same thing under the hood, exactly, and you know, I don't know whether they got points for that, but whatever the case may be, it certainly made the point that it's an off road vehicle.
• 12:06
Speaker 5: Yes, and you know, and they're, they're the spectators, the kids, you know they're coming to see that kind of stuff and they'd rather see that dirt on the car, on something like that.
• 12:14
Speaker 1: Sure, it's like it's no different really than an original car that has a very heavy patina on it because it sat out in somebody's back yard for 20 years, you know, correct.
• 12:27
Speaker 2: So, so, so let me ask you this, because we've seen this what happens when a guy shows up with a barn find a true barn find and he doesn't.
• 12:38
Speaker 2: He hasn't washed it, he wants to leave it exactly like he found it, and we ran across this with a Mustang one time down at the airport.
• 12:46
Speaker 4: And Ellington he's still had cobwebs inside the Kregger wheels.
• 12:50
Speaker 4: I remember that car yeah.
• 12:52
Speaker 2: So, so when you?
• 12:53
Speaker 2: Is there a way to judge something like that other than just being in all of the fact that it still exists?
• 13:01
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that's that's another you know conversation you have with the owner, because the things that you're looking for on a show like that I mean you almost, I mean it's almost you run into those shows that will have underrest under registration or originals or things like that.
• 13:24
Speaker 5: It almost has to have the same class, because if you're not judging fairly across the board, it is really, really hard.
• 13:32
Speaker 5: But I'm like you or or that owner, because I also seen the car, I'm not changing it, I want it the way that it is Right, the way that I found it, and that's what.
• 13:44
Speaker 5: And he has to come to that understanding.
• 13:47
  Speaker 5: I mean, it's a hard, hard line.
• 13:52
Speaker 2: So you would still judge it against its peers, because for what it is for what it is and obviously then it's not going to do real well because he hasn't cleaned it up and stuff.
• 14:02
Speaker 4: But that's a personal choice, but that's a burn and talk about, was that interview of the owner gives you an insight to not necessarily how to judge the car, but what to judge the car for.
• 14:15
  Speaker 4: Is that?
• 14:17
  Speaker 5: correct, bernie?
• 14:17
Speaker 5: Yes, and you got to look at somebody like that to own a car like that.
• 14:22
Speaker 5: They're probably not really interested in winning that award so much as they are wanting to get their car and they're fine because we also that car.
• 14:31
Speaker 5: I mean, he had all the write-ups on it, all the stuff.
• 14:34
Speaker 5: That's that that was his award.
• 14:36
Speaker 5: Of all those people coming by and looking at that car and what he found and what he has.
• 14:41
Speaker 1: That's his real reward.
• 14:42
Speaker 1: And the real reward is what us talking about it, how many years later?
• 14:47
Speaker 1: Because it stood out to us as something that was truly remarkable and very different, that you would never, ever run across At least I'd never in my all my career looking at cars, vernon, and all of the all of the shows that you've been a judge at what vehicle stands out for you.
• 15:07
Speaker 5: Well, I mean, of course, in the I look for not only, you know, the cleanliness out of the car, but I look for that workmanship, that creativity in the car, what somebody has done to their car.
• 15:22
Speaker 5: You know, those kind of things are the things that stand out to me.
• 15:26
Speaker 5: What is a person and even if you have a new car, there are people out there doing things to their new cars that you would not believe in, the creativity that they do to those cars and the things that they add to those cars.
• 15:38
Speaker 5: You know it takes you back.
• 15:41
Speaker 5: You know you get done with that judging and you go back I can do this to my car or I can do this.
• 15:47
Speaker 5: I mean, there's those things you take away.
• 15:49
Speaker 4: Well, and one of the cars brings comes to my mind on that is Jason's Mustang, you know, and I can't ever pronounce his last.
• 15:56
Speaker 4: It's a car you know because Jason spent a lot of time and effort in dressing his car and it's a relatively new generation Mustang.
• 16:06
Speaker 4: But he gets recognized for the work he's put into that car all the time at various shows and that's kind of what you're talking about.
• 16:14
Speaker 4: It might not necessarily be that this is a one of one GT350 that was an SCCA competitor vehicle.
• 16:22
Speaker 4: It may be, you know, this is one of, you know, 6,000 that were built.
• 16:26
Speaker 4: But this, this owner took the time to dress it a certain way and presented a certain way and you want to recognize them for their time and effort, not just the car itself.
• 16:37
Speaker 3: Yeah, and that was the question I guess I was trying to ask is is there a particular car that you fancy more than others?
• 16:44
  Speaker 5: Oh, I mean I don't have one.
• 16:48
Speaker 5: I mean because I got the 67 fastback.
• 16:50
Speaker 5: But my favorite Mustang is a 69 Mach 1.
• 16:53
Speaker 5: I've always loved the car and you know I still say to this day I'm going to have one sooner or later.
• 16:59
Speaker 5: But you know I got to convince my wife to there is that.
• 17:05
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 17:05
Speaker 1: I think that every judge has got a favorite car.
• 17:07
Speaker 1: It may not be at that show, but you know if it.
• 17:10
Speaker 1: If it is at that show, you know as a judge it's kind of like the sideline judge of a football game.
• 17:17
Speaker 1: You've got to be neutral in in your perspective of the car and how you judge it.
• 17:23
  Speaker 5: Correct.
• 17:24
Speaker 5: Yeah, and one of the things we've been talking about for our November 4th show.
• 17:28
Speaker 5: We have and here in Houston and they signed up for our show.
• 17:34
Speaker 5: It is one of the 150 pre-production Mustangs that were built by Ford before the release date.
• 17:41
Speaker 5: It's he has a documentation on the car and it's believed to be the first convertible Mustang built by Ford.
• 17:48
  Speaker 5: Oh wow.
• 17:49
Speaker 1: What a piece, that is Is he a local guy?
• 17:53
Speaker 5: Yes, he's a local guy here in Houston, wow, and he signed up for the, signed up for the show.
• 18:01
Speaker 5: So we look forward to seeing him and going.
• 18:06
  Speaker 5: You know, going.
• 18:06
Speaker 5: We had another individual that signed up for the show.
• 18:09
Speaker 5: We talk about the, the, the, the history, and he just signed up for the show.
• 18:13
Speaker 5: He has a Chevy truck that he was his dad's and now it's his and he's been going through it re-sporring and I think.
• 18:25
Speaker 5: But he took his first driver's test back in the, the 70s in this truck.
• 18:30
Speaker 5: He learned to drive in the truck Very nice, and he still has it.
• 18:33
Speaker 1: Well, vernon, it's great to talk to you.
• 18:34
Speaker 1: We appreciate the time you spent with us this morning.
• 18:37
Speaker 1: So the judging clinic is October the 29th and it's going to be held up in Magnolia, and the Conrad's going to post all that information, I guess, on our Facebook page or put a link to it anyway.
• 18:47
Speaker 1: And then the big show for you guys is November 4th.
• 18:52
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 18:52
Speaker 5: So on that, on that judging clinic, if, if anybody is interested in it, they need to look at that flyer.
• 18:59
Speaker 5: Reach out to us, reach out to me, call me.
• 19:02

• 19:07
  Speaker 1: Very nice.
• 19:07
