- 0:22SPEAKER_00: We're doing a short series on writing habits, and yesterday we talked about the pathway to your writing dreams, which is building a writing habit.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: You can have all the marketing skills in the world, all the business skills, all the opportunities in the world, but without the writing habit to actually help you produce the work, none of those things are actually going to be helpful.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: So with that in mind, today I want to share three simple observations about writing habits.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Observation number one is a habit helps ensure that you get the work done.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: You know, a habit is just a mechanism that increases the likelihood that you'll do the work.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: There's nothing magical about a habit.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: It just helps ensure that the magic will actually happen.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: But here's the thing, you have to commit to the habit before the magic will happen.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: It's just like digging a well.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: You have to put the work in before the water can flow.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: The water's not going to magically just flow to you.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: You have to give the water a pathway to flow to you, and a writing habit is that pathway.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Observation number two, a habit that works for somebody else doesn't always work for you.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: You know, there's a big danger in the writing world, which is we see what works for other people, and we want to use it as a shortcut to our own success.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: But as you know, it doesn't really work that way.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: You have your own life, you have your own obligations, you have your own energy and your own sense of flow.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Seeing what works for others can be a guide, but it doesn't always work to copy it outright.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And that's why you need to develop a writing habit that is specific to the time, the location, and the tools that you use, not somebody else.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Then finally, observation number three is that a routine takes time to establish.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Experts differ on how long it should take to establish a new habit.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Some say 21 days, others say 30 days, and some even say 40 or 60 days.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Well, no matter how you slice it, it's gonna take some time, probably a minimum of at least three or four weeks to really build a good habit.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And I think it's important to understand going into it that you're gonna be uncomfortable for a little while until that habit feels normal.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: But truthfully, nobody ever became successful by being comfortable.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, the very definition of growth means you're doing something different than what you're already doing.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: So growth always requires discomfort, at least almost always.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: So if you start to build a writing habit, going into it, knowing that it's gonna be a little bit uncomfortable, I think it's gonna make it a lot easier.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: So there you go.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Three observations about building writing habits.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Tomorrow we're gonna start diving into some specific ways to develop a writing habit that can change your life.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: So here's today's challenge.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Ask yourself if the idea of building a new habit sounds exciting or intimidating.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And I'd also be curious why you feel that way.
