- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hello. Hi team, thank you for being
- 0:24here and for listening. I hope you're having an awesome
- 0:26week. This is an episode that's going
- 0:28to be short and sweet and kind of punchy.
- 0:31Like a little bit of lightning in a bottle, kind of.
- 0:33Message because I want to pump you up this week and I want to
- 0:36bring home a message that I've been thinking about a lot
- 0:40lately. And this episode is about the
- 0:43people you surround yourself with.
- 0:46And the message is very simple. Surround yourself with people
- 0:50who want you to win. I've been thinking about this so
- 0:54much because I'm noticing there has felt like a shift in the
- 0:58tide with people. I'm actually starting to see a
- 1:01lot more celebration that's happening for people in their
- 1:05friendships and their relationships and their life.
- 1:07People are pumping each other up.
- 1:08They're celebrating them, and I'm really excited about that.
- 1:10At least in my circles and in the periphery that I can see.
- 1:14I know that there are a lot of people who are not having this
- 1:17experience. And in fact, I just spoke to a
- 1:20client recently who's straight up said, I don't have anybody in
- 1:24my life who's cheering me on, who has my back, who's lifting
- 1:28me up. And it really has me thinking
- 1:31about this idea that it is absolutely crucial and essential
- 1:35that we surround ourselves with people who do just that, who
- 1:39lift us up, who are cheerleaders, who want to see us
- 1:42win. And of course, it's obvious we
- 1:45don't want to be surrounded by people who are mean to us.
- 1:49And we certainly know that there are people out there who are
- 1:51kind of mean. But it's very obvious to us to
- 1:55create boundaries and distance between ourselves and those
- 1:58kinds of people. That's what you learn when
- 2:00you're little. Don't play with mean people.
- 2:02You don't have to be friends with bullies.
- 2:04We understand that. But we should take this step
- 2:07further, team, and say don't surround yourself with people
- 2:10who are discouraging of you. Not mean, but discouraging.
- 2:16Don't be with people who are discouraging of you.
- 2:19Don't even let them in. We always talk about setting
- 2:23boundaries for bullies, but we don't talk about setting
- 2:26boundaries for discouraging people.
- 2:28And that's almost as bad because it's more silent and subtle and
- 2:33under the radar when people are discouraging.
- 2:37But it can be deeply, deeply, profoundly impactful for us and
- 2:43our belief in ourselves and our self-confidence and self
- 2:46assuredness. It is so impactful.
- 2:49We don't always recognize discouragement because it can
- 2:53come in a lot of different forms beyond the really obvious
- 2:56outward discouragement that people say with their words.
- 2:58But it can also come in the form of saying, Are you sure you
- 3:02really want to do that? Do you think you're equipped to
- 3:05to be doing this? Are you sure you should be
- 3:06taking that risk? What does your family think?
- 3:11Oh, did your parents think that was a good idea?
- 3:13There's so many different ways that people can speak
- 3:16discouragement that are not the outright discouragement.
- 3:21And sometimes it's not words at all, but it's a smirk or a laugh
- 3:26or an eye roll, or a backhanded comment or a belittling
- 3:31statement, or even like you heard gossip within your friend
- 3:35group about yourself. Don't let those people in your
- 3:39circle anymore, and if they're already there, create some
- 3:42distance from them. Instead, we have to surround
- 3:46ourselves with people who want to see us win.
- 3:49They should want to see us win because that is a sign of a
- 3:53confident, self assured person who has done some of the work
- 3:59that's required in life and is able to bring their whole self
- 4:03to a friendship and team. They don't have to look and
- 4:07think like you. It doesn't mean that you have to
- 4:09be friends with all the same kinds of people as you in the
- 4:12same types of circles. Hell, one of my best friends,
- 4:15his name is Mark and we could not be any more different.
- 4:19He's a big dude, alpha male, works in the mining industry, in
- 4:23the corporate finance. He doesn't really like to be
- 4:25social with everyone. He's more of an introverted guy.
- 4:28We're kind of the most unlikeliest of friends, but he's
- 4:32got a soft side and he's one of the most passionate, loyal
- 4:36people I know. He's always one of the first
- 4:39people to ask what can I do? And I mean seriously, anytime
- 4:43there's something hard going on in our lives, he sends me a
- 4:46message and says what can I do to help?
- 4:48Every single time one of the first people to get a message
- 4:51from. And you know what else he always
- 4:53says to me? He says dude, I want you to win.
- 4:57Verbatim. Those are the words that I hear
- 5:00out of his mouth. Dude, I want you to win.
- 5:04And after so many years of that consistent statement from him,
- 5:09I'm like, God, he really does. He wants me to win.
- 5:11And over time, I've wanted to surround myself with more and
- 5:15more people who think and act just that way.
- 5:19It's absolutely huge when you're growing and expanding as a
- 5:22person, as we all are. Those are the people that stand
- 5:27the test of time in your life because they allow you to be and
- 5:31become your best future self. Look, we all have our baggage
- 5:38and I'm not saying that we don't bring it to friendships or
- 5:41relationships. We do.
- 5:43But to put our baggage on other people, to lead with our pain or
- 5:49our scarcity or our fear and look at somebody we care about
- 5:53in the eye and just blatantly discourage them, that ain't it.
- 5:59The time for that is over. We need to do something
- 6:04differently. And I can acknowledge that it
- 6:06can be hard as adults to make these shifts.
- 6:08It's hard to make new friendships as adults.
- 6:12It really can be. And there are times where you
- 6:15might feel lonely or isolated in this path of sort of creating
- 6:21new relationships that feel better, that feel feel more
- 6:24hopeful and more positive and more uplifting.
- 6:28But it's crucial to do that because in the long run, you
- 6:32don't want to look back and say, God, for so many years of my
- 6:36life, I was just surrounded by people who were steeped in fear
- 6:39and their own pain. And it was sort of a caustic
- 6:42solution we were all seeping in. You know, I'm embarrassed to say
- 6:46that I've let this happen in my life many times for a lot longer
- 6:52than I should have. I've been in so many different
- 6:54friendships or relationships where people were discouraging
- 6:58to me or to other people and I allowed it to happen.
- 7:04I would make excuses for them. I would say, oh, they probably
- 7:08didn't mean it that way, or maybe they don't recognize what
- 7:11they're saying. And you know what, it never got
- 7:15better. Because people who are
- 7:18discouraging of you, of other people, they're not dealing with
- 7:23their own stuff. They're not dealing with their
- 7:25baggage or their insecurity or their fear or their scarcity.
- 7:29They're not doing the work. And because they're not changing
- 7:32anything and they're not doing the work, that means that it's
- 7:36never going to change. And I've seen that in my own
- 7:38life. I'm sure that you've had that
- 7:41experience before. And what we have to recognize is
- 7:44it's not our freaking job to change it.
- 7:47The really, really hard lesson for me that I've had to learn
- 7:51over and over is that just because you can see someone's
- 7:54heart, you can see the goodness in their heart and who they had
- 7:57the potential to become, it doesn't mean that it's your
- 8:00responsibility to stick around until they do, until they become
- 8:04it. It's not your job to help bring
- 8:07it to fruition. You can see their heart and
- 8:11cheer them on from a distance. You don't need to be their
- 8:15punching bag in the meantime. And that's, that's a hard thing
- 8:19to act on. We know it intuitively.
- 8:22You would probably agree with me if I said that to you face to
- 8:26face. But to act on it, to really make
- 8:29decisions, hard decisions about who we spend time with, I know
- 8:32that that's not always easy, but we should be cheering on every
- 8:36single friend we have. We should be lifting each other
- 8:40up and encouraging each other because this shit is hard in
- 8:44this world. And the truth is, nobody makes
- 8:47it on their own. Nobody is self-made.
- 8:50People are made by standing on the shoulders of the other
- 8:53people that came before them or the people around them
- 8:56currently. And so it makes perfect sense
- 9:00that if you want to get to where you want to go, you have to
- 9:02surround yourself with people who are willing to let you stand
- 9:06on their shoulders temporarily and they're willing to hold your
- 9:09ankles so that you don't fall over.
- 9:12That's the stuff that makes a real friendship.
- 9:15That's what makes real community and quality connection.
- 9:19And we have to start paying more attention to that because God
- 9:22damn it, you are so deserving of that in your life.
- 9:26So I don't have a challenge for you this week.
- 9:28I just hope that this message sinks in to your heart and to
- 9:31your mind and your spirit. I hope that you remember this
- 9:34because I know it, that you know it internally, that you felt
- 9:37this in your life. I hope that you can really
- 9:40integrate this and start to make some decisions, do a little
- 9:43audit and see like who's sticking around and who do I
- 9:47have to create some distance from because I'm not tolerating
- 9:49this anymore. I'm choosing the people who want
- 9:52to see me when Let's go team, I hope you have a great week.
