- 4:58Speaker 2: I know, right, all right? And what are you drinking tonight, babes.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Well, tonight, I am drinking my current drink obsession, which
- 5:07Speaker 4: is a vodka tonic with homemade strawberry chili shrub.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Oh what does that mean?
- 5:15Speaker 3: It's like you.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Cook straw like a strawberry puree with chili peppers and
- 5:23Speaker 4: balsamic vinegar and sugar.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Why sugar there? But yeah, it's just like this interesting.
- 5:30Speaker 3: I mean, that's just one kind of shrub.
- 5:32Speaker 4: I think it's just generally ask to have vinegar and
- 5:34Speaker 4: sugar probably, but and it's like a concentrate, so you
- 5:37Speaker 4: just put a little bit in the bottom of something else.
- 5:39Speaker 3: But it's Uh, we had a really good strawberry crop
- 5:44Speaker 3: this year up here.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Ah, we had like too many to use, so I
- 5:49Speaker 4: had to get a little creative with it.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Doesn't she look amazing? Yes, everybody's cap how amazing.
- 5:54Speaker 3: There's a reason for this madness.
- 5:59Speaker 2: There always is. Yeah. No, that sounds delicious. We whack
- 6:02Speaker 2: at hot. Oh boy, I don't know about that compliment.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Uh oh oh, things are gonna get weird to know. Hi,
- 6:09Speaker 2: I'm just getting so for me, there's no wine for
- 6:13Speaker 2: me tonight. I know it's true crime and wine time,
- 6:15Speaker 2: but I'm still in the process of going through my
- 6:18Speaker 2: astral tequila and mango margarita mix. So that's what I'm
- 6:21Speaker 2: drinking because I don't really drink near as much. Everyone
- 6:24Speaker 2: seems something I do. I'm not that young anymore. Where
- 6:28Speaker 2: you know a bottle would be gone in a day. No,
- 6:31Speaker 2: it takes it takes time.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, So it's no wine in crime time.
- 6:37Speaker 2: No, wine in crime time. But it is a very strong,
- 6:42Speaker 2: very strong mangarita, so you'll still have a good show,
- 6:46Speaker 2: I promised. Hi, Teresia, welcome, Welcome everybody that's coming into
- 6:51Speaker 2: the chat. So happy to see you guys tonight. Love
- 6:56Speaker 2: this all right? So do you want to kick which
- 7:00Speaker 2: you have for us?
- 7:01Speaker 3: Let's going to do it. So when was the last
- 7:06Speaker 3: time you had a crush on someone?
- 7:09Speaker 2: Literally thirty minutes ago when I saw you pop up
- 7:13Speaker 2: in here.
- 7:14Speaker 3: So then, well there's a visual gag here. Okay, because
- 7:23Speaker 3: it's supposed to be Karen's defense team. But I'll take
- 7:26Speaker 3: it if. I mean, I don't know how I'm I'm obsessed.
- 7:32Speaker 2: I got crushes on the defense team. I'm just saying
- 7:36Speaker 2: all of them, including Eliza. Yes, you two, babe.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Yeah No, they're all hard, bad, they're all hot in
- 7:42Speaker 3: their way.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Okay, yes, but so remember the excitement when you see
- 7:49Speaker 4: your crush. You get like a glittering feeling that maybe
- 7:53Speaker 4: you hope that you.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Might see them sometime soon.
- 7:57Speaker 4: So what if you could make that sometimes soon happen
- 8:01Speaker 4: on your terms in a really creepy way.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Oh no, But before we talk about the man and
- 8:11Speaker 2: his motives, what's.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Set the scene?
- 8:14Speaker 2: Oh, all right, take us down tonight.
- 8:16Speaker 3: We're going to take a little trip to the nation's capital, Washington,
- 8:20Speaker 3: DC and the surrounding area.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I think it's this way, this way, I think so,
- 8:27Speaker 2: I don't know which way. Yeah, I mess it up
- 8:29Speaker 2: every time.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I messed it up every time too. So George W.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Bush was president.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Eminem's Lose Yourself was at the top of the charts.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Maybe just maybe you're on your way to go see
- 8:41Speaker 4: how to lose a guy in ten days.
- 8:45Speaker 3: That's right, folks. It's early two thousand and three and
- 8:48Speaker 3: things are about to get hot in.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Her, hot in her this is the fire. We're supposed
- 8:54Speaker 2: to take our clothes off. I don't think it's second
- 8:55Speaker 2: to show.
- 8:57Speaker 3: The second show I've worked Nelly into that is for the.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Un It is Hello, cavvy, Hello, welcome, every bost just
- 9:07Speaker 2: come it in. So happy to see you, all right,
- 9:10Speaker 2: you guys. So in the spring of two thousand and three,
- 9:15Speaker 2: two fire officials from neighboring counties in DC and Maryland
- 9:20Speaker 2: got to chatting at a promotional exam, as it often goes,
- 9:25Speaker 2: they started talking shop what case are you working on?
- 9:29Speaker 2: It wasn't until that unplanned meeting that they realized they
- 9:33Speaker 2: shared a common problem, multiple multiple suspicious fires with similar
- 9:43Speaker 2: evidence and black thereof, they made plans to meet up
- 9:47Speaker 2: and share information, and they had no idea what they
- 9:51Speaker 2: were about to discover. So along the county border, occupied
- 9:56Speaker 2: single family homes were being set a flame the early
- 10:00Speaker 2: morning hours. Look at that, Oh my goodness. The fires
- 10:03Speaker 2: were started on porches or at doors, and more fueled
- 10:07Speaker 2: by gasoline held in a plastic container with a cloth wick.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Four fires were definitively linked by evidence, and fifteen more
- 10:17Speaker 2: had enough similarities to make them wonder The fires were
- 10:21Speaker 2: happening at an astonishing rate too. Now we didn't discuss
- 10:26Speaker 2: all of them tonight unless you want to be here
- 10:28Speaker 2: till tomorrow, which again, I love hanging out with you all,
- 10:31Speaker 2: but like my mom has got to sleep. Sometimes, you guys,
- 10:36Speaker 2: let the lama sleep. But if there's ever a gap
- 10:40Speaker 2: in our timeline, you can sadly assume that there were
- 10:44Speaker 2: more fires. Just all the fires are happening.
- 10:49Speaker 4: So neither fire department had the manpower to work on
- 10:53Speaker 4: such an overwhelming case, so they asked for home. A
- 10:56Speaker 4: task force was assembled, led by Baltimore Atface Tom Daily
- 11:01Speaker 4: and Scott Fulkerson and eventually there were members of the
- 11:05Speaker 4: task force from every area fire and police department in
- 11:10Speaker 4: the like in the Vicinity. They were like the Avengers
- 11:15Speaker 4: of the DMV area, which is DC, Maryland and Virginia.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I purposely did not look at the slideshow for today
- 11:29Speaker 2: before we continue on. You should know that Captain and
- 11:32Speaker 2: the script made everything Avengers theme, which I love because
- 11:35Speaker 2: I'm a huge Marvel nerd. And I was like, I'll
- 11:39Speaker 2: just wait to look at the slide show in real times,
- 11:43Speaker 2: So I'm sorry for the outburst of laughter.
- 11:45Speaker 4: I mean, we we call Karen Reid's defense team the
- 11:49Speaker 4: dream Team.
- 11:49Speaker 3: As soon as I started writing this, I was like,
- 11:52Speaker 3: these are the Avengers.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Yes, I love this so much, and.
- 11:56Speaker 3: There's far more than I could photoshop ads on, just.
- 12:00Speaker 2: So everybody, there's a lot.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Yeah, so early on, all they really knew was the
- 12:08Speaker 4: similarities in the types of houses, the time of day,
- 12:13Speaker 4: and that all the fires were set in working class
- 12:16Speaker 4: African American neighborhoods. And also just to remember, it's two
- 12:20Speaker 4: thousand and three, so you know they're talking on next tells.
- 12:24Speaker 3: The entire story, like all their communication.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Those were the Yeah, those were the walkie talkie like ones, right,
- 12:31Speaker 2: that were so obnoxious. They were so obnoxious. Oh it
- 12:37Speaker 2: was something you guys. Oh, somebody's honk being at us
- 12:40Speaker 2: for our show. Apparently they were like, yeah, next too,
- 12:43Speaker 2: let's hear more. So they enlisted the help of seasoned
- 12:49Speaker 2: ATF profiler ron Tunkle, who told the team that he
- 12:53Speaker 2: thought the arsonist was an African American male, which is
- 12:57Speaker 2: rare for artists. By the way, is about ninety percent
- 13:01Speaker 2: of arsenist are male, and he figured a woman might
- 13:05Speaker 2: not feel safe out in the neighborhoods late at night.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Oh that's Ronald F. Tuncle. Okay, Oh where was I?
- 13:14Speaker 2: But most I can do the aventures. Oh good, we
- 13:17Speaker 2: finally picked a nerdy thing that Terry can get in on,
- 13:21Speaker 2: like all of them. But most arsenists are also white
- 13:29Speaker 2: and argued some argued some members of the task force.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Tunkle explained violent crime tends to be ter racial in nature.
- 13:39Speaker 2: The majority of these victims were in the African American community.
- 13:43Speaker 2: And then another thing we talk about is an arsenist
- 13:47Speaker 2: working in a comfort zone, and this offender had operated
- 13:51Speaker 2: there for a long time without being noticed. He blended
- 13:55Speaker 2: in he fit in. I don't know if that's that
- 13:57Speaker 2: guy's voice, but that's I decided to give him tonight.
- 14:00Speaker 2: So you're welcome. Ron tunkle.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Hey, sunny, hey, funny.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Oh. So, with very little to go on by July,
- 14:17Speaker 2: they decided to try to communicate with the arson. It's
- 14:20Speaker 2: through the press.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Oh.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I love when they do this, but they feel like
- 14:24Speaker 2: they don't do this anymore. No, there was something in it.
- 14:28Speaker 4: No, there was something that I hate to bring it
- 14:31Speaker 4: up because it's a real downer. But the d the
- 14:33Speaker 4: dad that killed.
- 14:34Speaker 2: His kids, reached one last.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Week or two weeks ago, the three little girls.
- 14:40Speaker 4: The statement they made to him, I felt like was
- 14:43Speaker 4: exactly the same with this, where it was just like
- 14:46Speaker 4: trying to be like, we're not judging you.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I just want to talk to you.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Travis Becker right, because his wife put out an ex
- 14:53Speaker 2: wife put out a statement too, like it's fine if
- 14:55Speaker 2: it happened, we all understand, and it's like, do we
- 14:58Speaker 2: do know?
- 14:59Speaker 3: It's not fine.
- 15:00Speaker 2: I don't think they've caught him yet. I think he's
- 15:02Speaker 2: still out there. But that's a whole different Okay, So
- 15:10Speaker 2: Tuncle suggested that Prince George's county Fire Chief Ronald Blackwell
- 15:15Speaker 2: be the face of the task force as an older
- 15:19Speaker 2: American father figure. Look at him, he kind of looks
- 15:22Speaker 2: like detached from family matters. I love that guy, I
- 15:28Speaker 2: think Mary is.
- 15:29Speaker 4: I can see why the face of the task force, right,
- 15:34Speaker 4: I'd like to punch that face.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Blackwell delivered a speech written by Tuncle in an attempt
- 15:42Speaker 2: to add a non judgmental plea for the arsonists to
- 15:45Speaker 2: turn himself in. Tuncle later said, one of the ultimate
- 15:50Speaker 2: motives for arson is power. The fire setting becomes a
- 15:54Speaker 2: means to obtain power, regain lost power, demonstrate power. So
- 16:00Speaker 2: we put that in there that he has the power
- 16:03Speaker 2: to control how things go. I don't think they're prepared.
- 16:08Speaker 3: No, yeah, it does have some power. It didn't work.
- 16:14Speaker 4: The arsonists did not turn themselves in, so a reward
- 16:18Speaker 4: was offered for eleven and a half thousand dollars.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Not bad for two thousand free money.
- 16:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, we'll see where that goes. Tips did rolling,
- 16:30Speaker 4: but none of them gave any leads. So the ATF
- 16:35Speaker 4: Lab investigators started experimenting with how to recreate the fires.
- 16:40Speaker 4: They found that when a wick was added to a
- 16:43Speaker 4: container of gasoline, the gasoline itself did not ignite. The
- 16:48Speaker 4: fumes from the gasoline fed the fire slowly, kind of
- 16:51Speaker 4: like a gas lamp. Oh okay, before the container holding
- 16:56Speaker 4: the gasoline could melt, the fire would ignite and a
- 17:01Speaker 4: home sighting.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Hi, finding Dory excited. You're here, it's kidding.
- 17:11Speaker 4: So with with these findings, it became clear to the
- 17:15Speaker 4: investigators that this was the work of pretty experienced arsenists,
- 17:18Speaker 4: and that suggested that maybe the timeline they were operating
- 17:23Speaker 4: on was off by many years, and that the arsenists
- 17:28Speaker 4: could be responsible for many more fires and potentially more deaths.
- 17:34Speaker 4: And learning, yeah, learning the arsenists methods also helped the
- 17:40Speaker 4: police confirm that they were indeed responsible for the June
- 17:45Speaker 4: death of eighty six year old lou Edna Jones.
- 17:50Speaker 3: That you know it was previously a maybe that is all.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Where I know? I love her well.
- 18:01Speaker 4: This delta blow through the police as another fire connected
- 18:05Speaker 4: to the arsenist had been set that same night and
- 18:08Speaker 4: only about fifty minutes earlier. They also assumed that the
- 18:13Speaker 4: arsenists followed their crimes on the news and therefore knew
- 18:18Speaker 4: that they had killed Jones, but continued to set fires.
- 18:22Speaker 4: So whoever was starting the fires was capable of setting
- 18:25Speaker 4: two in quick secession, and they were not deterred by killing.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Ooh, which is not great.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Not what you're hoping for in an arsen case.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Is not great. That is not great. Okay, So let's
- 18:39Speaker 2: go back a little bit to June fifth, two thousand
- 18:43Speaker 2: and three, when lou and Edna Jones died when a
- 18:47Speaker 2: fire consumed her dream home. Her two grandchildren, ages thirteen
- 18:52Speaker 2: and twenty four, managed to escape by jumping out of
- 18:56Speaker 2: a second story window. Jones was known as my Mulu.
- 19:01Speaker 2: She'd been the matriarch of the neighborhood and that neighbor
- 19:04Speaker 2: who knew everyone and would call you over to share
- 19:07Speaker 2: dinner if you walk by when she was grilling. Oh
- 19:10Speaker 2: my gosh, she's so so awesome. She'd bought the large
- 19:15Speaker 2: white house on the corner years ago for its basement
- 19:19Speaker 2: so her son could play with his trains without having
- 19:22Speaker 2: to pick them up every night. Oh I love that,
- 19:26Speaker 2: and her family had lived there for over fifty years. Oh,
- 19:31Speaker 2: this is awday detrimental to the family. Her now grown
- 19:37Speaker 2: son got the call while at work, arriving at home
- 19:41Speaker 2: in time to watch the house burn. Police physically restraining
- 19:46Speaker 2: him when he tried to get to the house, not
- 19:49Speaker 2: knowing if she was inside. Unfortunately, she never escaped her
- 19:54Speaker 2: bedroom that night. She tried, as evidenced by the burns
- 19:58Speaker 2: on her feet, but she died of asphyxiation. Now the
- 20:04Speaker 2: neighbors left at memorial for her years afterwards to celebrate
- 20:09Speaker 2: Mama lu Oh gosh. Yeah, it's so sad.
- 20:15Speaker 3: It is really sad.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Like everything you can find about her as just every
- 20:20Speaker 4: like the whole neighborhood.
- 20:22Speaker 3: This was the matriarch, So.
- 20:24Speaker 4: This guy already, Yeah, get used to that feeling.
- 20:30Speaker 3: In September of two thousand and three, investigators got a break.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Three teenage brothers coming home around three am from a
- 20:39Speaker 4: late night at work, found a strange man sitting on
- 20:41Speaker 4: their front porch. When they approached him, he asked them,
- 20:45Speaker 4: does mister Harris live here? They told him no, and
- 20:50Speaker 4: he left, and when they told their parents what he
- 20:52Speaker 4: had left behind.
- 20:53Speaker 3: They called the police.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Oh, the boys had found what they called a bag
- 20:58Speaker 4: of gas and they had thrown it into the sewer
- 21:01Speaker 4: across the street.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Okay, I don't think that's the best place to dismiss.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Yeah, not the best way to handle evidence.
- 21:09Speaker 4: But they're thir teenage kids at three am, you know,
- 21:12Speaker 4: trum Arriving at the house on Anacostia Avenue northeast, the
- 21:16Speaker 4: police fished a plastic shopping bag out of the sewer
- 21:20Speaker 4: containing a gasoline filled juice drug. A piece of cloth
- 21:24Speaker 4: was tied to the handle. The bag also contained a single.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Strand of hair mm interesting.
- 21:31Speaker 4: The task force built a tend around the porch and
- 21:34Speaker 4: scoured it for any additional evidence, like, bogged it for fingerprints.
- 21:38Speaker 3: Didn't find anything.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Metro the house. I'm sorry, Well, okay.
- 21:44Speaker 3: That's the house with I don't know.
- 21:48Speaker 2: That's not the house then okay, it's modern, Okay, it could.
- 21:51Speaker 4: A lot of the images in this lunch so I
- 21:53Speaker 4: will say are either like as far back as Google
- 21:57Speaker 4: Maps went or like for people them now it's right,
- 22:01Speaker 4: there are some pictures you can tell or them then
- 22:04Speaker 4: get you get ready for the Oakley sunglasses.
- 22:06Speaker 2: But boy, okay, spoilers.
- 22:10Speaker 3: But yeah, I don't know. The house could have been
- 22:13Speaker 3: rebuilt in a lot of them.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Okay, but sure you can kind.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Of see the footprint of the vibe hopefully so. Metro
- 22:21Speaker 4: ped Homicide detective Frank Melino interviewed the three teens and
- 22:26Speaker 4: had a composite sketch made from their memory.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Oh the boys.
- 22:32Speaker 3: The boys were not happy with the sketch, which the
- 22:35Speaker 3: task force referred to as mister Potato had.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Oh my god, what.
- 22:42Speaker 3: But and remember the sketch when y'all saw the thumbnail,
- 22:47Speaker 3: gotch is not great? They all the boys had slightly
- 22:53Speaker 3: different memories of the encounter. It had been dark.
- 22:59Speaker 4: They were able to firm that he was a blackmail
- 23:01Speaker 4: and that he had salt and pepper hair, light skin
- 23:04Speaker 4: and no accent. But it is like, it's very normal
- 23:08Speaker 4: for multiple people in a situation to remember everything differently
- 23:12Speaker 4: because it's also subjective. So that's our sure more believable
- 23:16Speaker 4: than everybody remembering the exact same thing.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Jen McCabe ooh, Shild's fire come about me? Bro, Yeah,
- 23:26Speaker 2: you guys totally just heard elbow p laugh and then
- 23:29Speaker 2: for the sketch. So interestingly enough, though the lab was
- 23:34Speaker 2: able to get DNA for root tissue on the hair,
- 23:37Speaker 2: though they didn't really know for certain that the hair
- 23:40Speaker 2: belonged to their arsonist. The intact device was studied by
- 23:44Speaker 2: the ATF lab. Well, okay, who knew exactly how the
- 23:50Speaker 2: fires are being set. They've been close. But the wick
- 23:54Speaker 2: wasn't in the gasoline. It was wrapped around the handles
- 23:57Speaker 2: so that the plastic slowly melted to release the gasoline.
- 24:01Speaker 2: He could start a fire and get away before it
- 24:04Speaker 2: became noticeable. That sounds like somebody who's been doing this
- 24:08Speaker 2: a lot. So officers began to have stakeouts with groups
- 24:13Speaker 2: strategically positioned in ours in its most active areas, in
- 24:18Speaker 2: the hopes of responding quickly enough to a reported fire
- 24:21Speaker 2: to catch the culprit in the act. Another fire was
- 24:25Speaker 2: linked in October of two thousand and three. An agent
- 24:29Speaker 2: arrived just minutes after the fire started, but the perpetrator
- 24:33Speaker 2: had already gotten away. Another in November, this time in Alexandria, Virginia,
- 24:40Speaker 2: an area outside of his usual range. Not only were
- 24:44Speaker 2: they unsure how long this fire starter had been operating,
- 24:48Speaker 2: they were now unsure if they'd cast a wide enough net,
- 24:52Speaker 2: because that's some distance.
- 24:56Speaker 3: To the other side of town, it is, but they
- 24:58Speaker 3: have great subways there, so yeah.
- 25:04Speaker 4: So more fires burned in the same way. But in
- 25:08Speaker 4: February two thousand and four, something different happened. A fire
- 25:12Speaker 4: was set on the porch of an apartment building. Until then,
- 25:16Speaker 4: they had all happened in single family detached homes, and
- 25:21Speaker 4: less than two weeks later, on Valentine's Day, Sorry Terry tucrime,
- 25:27Speaker 4: Oh no, a fire was started inside of an apartment
- 25:30Speaker 4: building on Blair Road in Montgomery County. This fire was
- 25:35Speaker 4: started in the building stairwell, forcing tenants on the second
- 25:39Speaker 4: floor to run through the blaze or try to escape
- 25:42Speaker 4: through the windows. But as horrible as it was, the
- 25:45Speaker 4: task force got a break when the incendiary device did
- 25:49Speaker 4: not fully melt. There were parts of another shopping bag,
- 25:54Speaker 4: an empty plastic drug, and an improvised wick made from
- 25:57Speaker 4: a scrap of black pants. That scrap was sent to
- 26:01Speaker 4: the lab and came back as a positive DNA match
- 26:04Speaker 4: for the hair found on the porch on Anacostia Avenue.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Interesting, okay, so they're like peace and some stuff.
- 26:12Speaker 3: They're like, okay, this was that's connected. It wasn't just
- 26:15Speaker 3: a random hair in that bag.
- 26:17Speaker 4: So Agent Tom Daily said, it gives you a great
- 26:20Speaker 4: feeling for twenty four hours, but then the next day
- 26:23Speaker 4: it's like, what's his name?
- 26:25Speaker 2: I have no idea, right, just big old mystery. As
- 26:30Speaker 2: Buffy says, pants, it's the pants in today's name is pants.
- 26:36Speaker 2: So Later that year, during a particularly stressful week with
- 26:40Speaker 2: four literally pants are on fire. Yes, yes, okay, you
- 26:48Speaker 2: guys are the greatest.
- 26:50Speaker 3: This is not pants off dance, but that does seem
- 26:53Speaker 3: very two thousand and three.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Yes, yes it does. Later that year, during a particularly
- 26:59Speaker 2: stress a week with four fires, the police got another break.
- 27:05Speaker 2: The black plastic shopping bag for one of the devices
- 27:08Speaker 2: had not fully melted and it had riding inside, made
- 27:12Speaker 2: in China for the Cornelius shop. That is oddly specific
- 27:18Speaker 2: for a freaking plastic bag like okay, okay. It didn't
- 27:23Speaker 2: take long to find the Cornelius shopping bag company in Richmond, Virginia.
- 27:29Speaker 2: The company only provided black plastic bags to two Circle
- 27:33Speaker 2: seven stores in the DC area, which are kind of
- 27:37Speaker 2: like seven elevens or bodegas if you don't know what
- 27:40Speaker 2: a Circle seven is. Desperate for a lead, the task
- 27:44Speaker 2: force installed surveillance cameras in the two stores and got
- 27:48Speaker 2: a bit creative. They knew that the fire starter had
- 27:53Speaker 2: shopped at one of two stores and that they were
- 27:57Speaker 2: using plastic jugs, so they came with inflammable ways to
- 28:02Speaker 2: mark the jugs and the bags. The hand wrote alphanumeric
- 28:08Speaker 2: sequences on the bottom of all products sold in plastic jugs,
- 28:13Speaker 2: since they usually left an unmelted bit behind. That's that's
- 28:19Speaker 2: something well to track that. It's a lot of work.
- 28:23Speaker 2: It's a lot of work to track the bags. They
- 28:27Speaker 2: put small metal tags inside with alphanumeric codes usually used
- 28:33Speaker 2: to tag birds. The tags were loose, so they had
- 28:36Speaker 2: to be placed just so in the hopes they wouldn't
- 28:39Speaker 2: be noticed. I don't know how that's useful in a
- 28:42Speaker 2: plastic bag. How are you gonna like beat a screep
- 28:47Speaker 2: about something in the sight of a dime in a bag?
- 28:51Speaker 2: That's okay, dream team, Okay. If a customer purchased something
- 28:58Speaker 2: that came in a plastic jug, whether it's juice, water, milk,
- 29:02Speaker 2: the cashier needed to use a bag from the special pile.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Then if a metal tag or plastic scrap was found
- 29:09Speaker 2: at a crime scene, they could use the ID numbers
- 29:12Speaker 2: and cameras to get a glimpse of the culprit. This
- 29:16Speaker 2: meant every taskboard meeting involved stuffing bags while they spoke,
- 29:22Speaker 2: and agents went by the two stores daily to record
- 29:25Speaker 2: what tags were the first in last of the day.
- 29:30Speaker 2: That seems so tedious.
- 29:33Speaker 4: It's very like I applaud their creativity because this, to
- 29:37Speaker 4: me showed how desperate they were getting.
- 29:39Speaker 3: It's like they had no leads other than these plastic bags.
- 29:43Speaker 2: And yes, so I mean.
- 29:47Speaker 3: They're trying.
- 29:48Speaker 4: But in December of two thousand and four, they still
- 29:52Speaker 4: hadn't found one metal tag or a plastic scrap from
- 29:55Speaker 4: the shoperation. But they did find another clue, and it
- 30:02Speaker 4: was a Marine Corps hat and a gasoline soaked pair
- 30:05Speaker 4: of dress pants more pants, more pants with DNA that
- 30:11Speaker 4: matched the other scenes. So of course it made them
- 30:15Speaker 4: wonder could the serial arsenists be a marine, and if
- 30:20Speaker 4: they were, maybe they could find a DNA match within
- 30:23Speaker 4: the military's database.
- 30:26Speaker 3: For some reason. Yeah, but I don't really know.
- 30:31Speaker 4: I don't understand this time gap year because that was
- 30:35Speaker 4: December two thousand and four. They don't go to NCIS
- 30:39Speaker 4: until April of two thousand and five.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Now it's the government. They work slow. We don't know that.
- 30:45Speaker 3: I think they're too busy. Stuff in those bags, Oh
- 30:48Speaker 3: my god.
- 30:52Speaker 2: A marine in hot pants? Ooh, you don't even know
- 30:55Speaker 2: the picture.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Oh my, the picture.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Ridiculous. He's going to make you what Oh gosh, Oh,
- 31:07Speaker 2: I think you're going to change that real quick. Here
- 31:10Speaker 2: in a couple of minutes, but money.
- 31:16Speaker 4: So so yeah, it took them till April of the
- 31:18Speaker 4: next year, two thousand and five. Uh for members of
- 31:21Speaker 4: the task force, along with US Attorney Jim Trustee. Yes
- 31:26Speaker 4: that Jim Trustee. But we're going to keep going. Pay
- 31:29Speaker 4: to visit to NCIS Naval a criminal investigative service.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Now a drink napping, my microphone picks up. I'm just
- 31:40Speaker 2: see here's the bottle. I just want to make that
- 31:42Speaker 2: perfectly knowing to those that are listening to us.
- 31:46Speaker 4: Sure, okay, sorry, well podcast an ASMR. So by that time,
- 31:55Speaker 4: the reward for information had been raised to one hundred
- 31:58Speaker 4: thousand dollars. So the last time we chucked in it
- 32:01Speaker 4: was eleven and a half thousand. Now it's one hundred thousand.
- 32:04Speaker 4: They mean business and they're still not getting anything. So
- 32:08Speaker 4: in CIS informed the team the DoD database didn't work
- 32:12Speaker 4: that way. It was a collection of DNA samples for
- 32:15Speaker 4: potential identification in case of serious injury or death.
- 32:19Speaker 3: It wasn't profiles and names like cotis.
- 32:23Speaker 2: That's a great yeap and the n CIS people, I
- 32:26Speaker 2: just noticed. Sorry late to the party, but that's great.
- 32:30Speaker 3: The building scene too boring, I needed Mark Harmon there.
- 32:33Speaker 3: I've never watched that show.
- 32:34Speaker 2: I think I've watched one episode.
- 32:36Speaker 3: I love Mark. The movie Summer School with Mark Carmon is.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Dyed to on TV all the time when I was younger.
- 32:43Speaker 2: I love that movie.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Will always be obsessed with that movie. That dog. So
- 32:49Speaker 3: I should have put them in instead of in CIA.
- 32:52Speaker 3: That would have been good.
- 32:54Speaker 4: But they did mention multiple fires and military barracks in
- 32:58Speaker 4: the area. So in CIS is like, we can't help
- 33:02Speaker 4: you with DNA, but also there's these fires going on
- 33:05Speaker 4: where we work. So surveillance footage from one of the
- 33:09Speaker 4: fires had a clear view of a car leaving the scene.
- 33:12Speaker 4: It was a light colored nineteen eighty eight or eighty
- 33:15Speaker 4: nine Toyota Corolla with a distinctive oval sticker on the
- 33:19Speaker 4: back windshields, which oval doesn't sound that distinctive.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, look at her flashback. That's crazy. Yeah,
- 33:30Speaker 2: like how cars used to look you guys.
- 33:33Speaker 3: My dad drove a Toyota Corolla back then, was right.
- 33:36Speaker 4: And it was in DC too, So interesting anyway, the military,
- 33:42Speaker 4: So once again we've got a case that I was
- 33:45Speaker 4: like around it's funny. So in cis Special Agent Matt
- 33:51Speaker 4: Butler actually tailed this car in March of two thousand
- 33:55Speaker 4: and three.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Wow, So what's in saying is that two years before
- 34:03Speaker 2: this incis meeting. That's right, two years that's months before
- 34:09Speaker 2: Mama lu was killed. And you know, it's really heartbreaking
- 34:14Speaker 2: to think that if there had been like a form
- 34:17Speaker 2: of communication place between all of these organizations, you know,
- 34:22Speaker 2: that some of the destruction and lives lost, it could
- 34:27Speaker 2: have been avoided. You know, Butler had gotten a plate
- 34:31Speaker 2: number before losing the car, and that car was registered
- 34:35Speaker 2: to an address on Lebaum Street in Southeast DC, just
- 34:40Speaker 2: locks away from one of the Circle seven stores that
- 34:45Speaker 2: used the bags found at the scene. And the owner
- 34:49Speaker 2: of that car was named Thomas Anthony Sweats not the
- 34:56Speaker 2: candy maker.
- 34:58Speaker 3: What Sweats?
- 34:59Speaker 2: It's a I don't know if that's just an Ohio thing.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Have you guys heard of Thomas Anthony candy chuck? Let's
- 35:05Speaker 2: oh okay, well, never mind, moving on. Sweat was surveiled,
- 35:11Speaker 2: but he wasn't doing anything suspicious. Frustrated and desperate atf
- 35:17Speaker 2: Scott Fulkerson eventually walked into Sweats work a KFC in
- 35:23Speaker 2: Northeast DC and asked him if he was a serial arsonist. Yep,
- 35:28Speaker 2: that's what you do. You just walk up to somebody You're.
- 35:32Speaker 3: Like, this is the one I made iron Man just
- 35:36Speaker 3: for Oh, all.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Right, that's fair. It would be a tell anything to
- 35:40Speaker 2: do so Fulkerson later said, if a person is innocent,
- 35:48Speaker 2: the answer has to be no. Anything else is considered decepted.
- 35:55Speaker 2: I mean I'd probably be like, uh what.
- 35:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel like I am making chick right now.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Also, look at how normal the top of his head
- 36:04Speaker 2: is compared to that sketch that was just like, you
- 36:07Speaker 2: know what, no forehead or top of head? Forget about it?
- 36:11Speaker 2: My god?
- 36:12Speaker 3: What?
- 36:13Speaker 2: Oh? I love I love bad sketches. I mean I
- 36:17Speaker 2: couldn't do that job. I'm sorry I couldn't.
- 36:20Speaker 3: But still, what Terry is confused?
- 36:27Speaker 2: What you confused? Harry?
- 36:29Speaker 3: We answer some questions for you.
- 36:33Speaker 2: Or maybe the candies are called Anthony Thomas candies. I
- 36:36Speaker 2: don't know, I don't know. But anyway, so he asked,
- 36:40Speaker 2: you know, he asks Sweat, like, oh, are you the
- 36:44Speaker 2: serial arsonist? So Sweat responded, why would I set those
- 36:49Speaker 2: beautiful homes on fire when I'm trying to become a
- 36:52Speaker 2: homeowner myself? So deceptive? But also calling the homes beautiful
- 37:01Speaker 2: implied that he had seen them, so Scott asked Sweat
- 37:05Speaker 2: for a DNA sample and Sweat a blood. She was like, yeah,
- 37:09Speaker 2: here you go, get it. So a swab of his
- 37:13Speaker 2: salaga was sent to the Montgomery County Lab, where an
- 37:17Speaker 2: analyst worked that weekend to turn it around as quickly
- 37:20Speaker 2: as possible, and guess what, say it together? It was
- 37:25Speaker 2: a match, all right. The tax force and prosecutors started
- 37:29Speaker 2: scrambling for Warrence. I mean about damn time. Yeah, and
- 37:36Speaker 2: you know, okay, I made fun of you, Folgerson, you know,
- 37:39Speaker 2: brazen going in there, all accusatory, but you're right. Good call,
- 37:45Speaker 2: good call, good call.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:48Speaker 4: Well, something that's kind of interesting about this is a
- 37:52Speaker 4: bunch like half the task force still did not believe
- 37:56Speaker 4: that it could be a black man. So a lot
- 37:58Speaker 4: of them were like, there's no way this is the guy.
- 38:00Speaker 4: They're following him around, he's driving to KFC, he's living
- 38:04Speaker 4: his life.
- 38:05Speaker 3: They're like, this isn't the guy.
- 38:06Speaker 2: And then written working at a KFC. I'm sure you
- 38:09Speaker 2: know they didn't take that very respectfully.
- 38:14Speaker 3: Yeah, so it was the guy. Scott got it. Uh.
- 38:19Speaker 4: Sweat was arrested on April twenty seventh of two thousand
- 38:23Speaker 4: and five, when I.
- 38:24Speaker 2: Just want to pull up one of elbow Feat's comments
- 38:26Speaker 2: here so we all remember what the sketches.
- 38:31Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly what I mean. Boys at
- 38:38Speaker 3: three am or whatever.
- 38:40Speaker 2: I'm just saying. I'm just w ross nice Betty. Yes,
- 38:46Speaker 2: I say, try not to laugh too hard because things
- 38:48Speaker 2: are melting. It wild.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a weirder.
- 38:52Speaker 2: So. Uh.
- 38:56Speaker 4: He was arrested April twenty seventh of two thousand and five.
- 39:00Speaker 4: He had driven out of DC into Maryland and they
- 39:03Speaker 4: weren't planning on arresting him then, but they were tailing
- 39:06Speaker 4: him and they thought he was running. So it turns
- 39:10Speaker 4: out he just had a regional meeting for KFC employees.
- 39:14Speaker 4: That happens, But while he was in the meeting, the
- 39:18Speaker 4: press somehow leaked the confidential information that an arrest was
- 39:22Speaker 4: going to be made.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Of course they did so.
- 39:25Speaker 4: The man tailing him was Chief Deputy Fire Marshall Robert
- 39:29Speaker 4: and m Luckett, and he was told to arrest him
- 39:33Speaker 4: before he could leave the parking lot.
- 39:36Speaker 2: I didn't even know Fire Marshal's can to arrest people.
- 39:38Speaker 3: I didn't either. Yeah, he had like an undercover cop. Car.
- 39:42Speaker 4: It might have been part of this task force. I
- 39:44Speaker 4: don't know, because they all it seems like everybody was
- 39:47Speaker 4: kind of.
- 39:49Speaker 3: The avengers.
- 39:50Speaker 2: I had no idea what was going on, must be honest.
- 39:54Speaker 4: So Luckett did cut off sweats car when he tried
- 39:56Speaker 4: to leave, and he made the arrest, which is pretty
- 40:01Speaker 4: embarrassing to get arrested in front of all your KFC coworkers,
- 40:05Speaker 4: like of the area, the.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Region, but the region.
- 40:08Speaker 3: I guess that's what you deserve.
- 40:13Speaker 2: So after, it's not the drugs, Terry, I promise it's
- 40:17Speaker 2: not the drugs. It looks weird, okay.
- 40:22Speaker 3: Was she confused about the sketch?
- 40:23Speaker 2: We yes, okay, okay, yeah, we all were.
- 40:28Speaker 4: So after about an hour and a half of questioning,
- 40:31Speaker 4: he can pass to setting fifty fires. He cried as
- 40:36Speaker 4: he discussed the death of lew Enna Jones and another woman,
- 40:41Speaker 4: eighty nine year old Annie Brown, who had died in
- 40:44Speaker 4: two thousand and two and a fire.
- 40:45Speaker 3: The task force hadn't tied to the case.
- 40:49Speaker 4: The government jumped at the chance to profile him and
- 40:52Speaker 4: tried to discern what made him cause so much destruction.
- 40:55Speaker 4: Sweat requested to meet Chief Blackwell, telling him sorry for
- 40:59Speaker 4: all the headache.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Wow, So that's all the buyers and that map there,
- 41:05Speaker 2: those are the ones he confessed to. That he confessed to. Wow,
- 41:09Speaker 2: that is interesting.
- 41:11Speaker 3: Made me hold onto your horses.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Kelly P. But was the chicken fingers looking good? Asking
- 41:16Speaker 2: for our friend a girl?
- 41:19Speaker 3: Yeah no, As I said in the intro, he was
- 41:22Speaker 3: considered the best fry cook in DC.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Like legit interesting? Okay, not just KFC.
- 41:30Speaker 3: But we'll find out more.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Oh yes, yes we will here, guys, oh boy. In
- 41:37Speaker 2: searching his car, police found no considerary devices, but they
- 41:42Speaker 2: did find a leather bag with a hole cut in
- 41:45Speaker 2: it and a camcorder. They learn sweat and another hobby,
- 41:52Speaker 2: secretly filming men on the street that he found to
- 41:56Speaker 2: be attractive. When the task course asked him about it,
- 42:00Speaker 2: they learned another hobby. It's going to come up multiple
- 42:04Speaker 2: times tonight.
- 42:07Speaker 3: So where are my mod's at. Let's go ahead and
- 42:10Speaker 3: drop that trigger because the other hobby.
- 42:16Speaker 4: Is pleasuring himself to these videotapes and to fires and
- 42:21Speaker 4: two shoes and to let me just check my list here,
- 42:25Speaker 4: funky walks.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Oh my god, oh boy, oh boy, we got a
- 42:35Speaker 2: lot of got a lot to go, you guys, and
- 42:37Speaker 2: don't worry you guys, don't worry. He also likes home renovations. Actually,
- 42:45Speaker 2: maybe this is a good time to jump timelines and
- 42:47Speaker 2: learn a little bit more about Thomas Sweat and how
- 42:50Speaker 2: he ended up a serial arsonist, which is really, I
- 42:54Speaker 2: think the least interesting thing about him, which is a wild.
- 43:00Speaker 3: I mean, it's interesting, it's so interesting.
- 43:06Speaker 4: The Thomas Anthony Sweat was born on November one, nineteen
- 43:11Speaker 4: fifty four, in North Carolina. Oh yeah, probably friends with Annie,
- 43:17Speaker 4: we can assume in nineteen fifty four. He knew from
- 43:22Speaker 4: an early age that he was different from other people.
- 43:27Speaker 4: He didn't want to play sports or ride a bike
- 43:29Speaker 4: like the other boys. He daydreamed about playing with dolls,
- 43:33Speaker 4: and he liked playing house with his brother as long
- 43:36Speaker 4: as his brother kept things very neat. He also recalls
- 43:41Speaker 4: being sexually aroused by shoes from a young age. He
- 43:45Speaker 4: later wrote about masturbating while looking at large, shiny shoes
- 43:50Speaker 4: his uncles, his father's someone who came over for a
- 43:54Speaker 4: prayer meeting, like anyone with shiny shoes.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Okay they're big enough.
- 44:02Speaker 2: Oh boy, Okay, that's a dress. That's a weird time.
- 44:12Speaker 2: That's weird timing for that comic all right, So he
- 44:24Speaker 2: never felt truly loved as a child, nor does he now.
- 44:29Speaker 2: He may tell a family member stop it. Okay, he
- 44:37Speaker 2: may tell a family member he loves them, but as
- 44:39Speaker 2: he put it, it's very hard to feel in my heart.
- 44:44Speaker 2: He would, decades later be diagnosed with an undisclosed personality
- 44:49Speaker 2: disorder and depression. Maybe that's why he didn't understand why
- 44:54Speaker 2: he did the things he did, saying, I look for
- 44:58Speaker 2: answers to many questions, but I'm only left with more
- 45:02Speaker 2: question marks. That's kind of sad when you think about it.
- 45:09Speaker 3: It is very sad. There, No, there's a lot about
- 45:11Speaker 3: this that's sad. Like we're we're going for the jokes
- 45:16Speaker 3: because it's foot stuff and whatnot. But but no, I
- 45:20Speaker 3: mean this is this is another person with a mental
- 45:23Speaker 3: disorder and.
- 45:25Speaker 2: That I'm sure being you know, African American and what
- 45:28Speaker 2: it sounds to be gay, Okay, in that time period,
- 45:33Speaker 2: in that time period, and Carolina is not a good
- 45:37Speaker 2: time for that. But also you don't need to become
- 45:41Speaker 2: an arsonist. But Danny d anyway, let's keep going. And
- 45:47Speaker 2: some people did die, so we can only have so
- 45:48Speaker 2: much sympathy, is all I'm saying.
- 45:50Speaker 3: Exactly. We've got the closing thoughts too. It's really gonna
- 45:56Speaker 3: do it.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Right, Okay. So Sweat tried to enlist in the Navy
- 46:02Speaker 2: in nineteen seventy six at the age of twenty one.
- 46:06Speaker 2: In a way it made sense. He liked things to
- 46:09Speaker 2: be very orderly, and believe it or not, wanted to
- 46:12Speaker 2: be a hero. While he passed the app to test,
- 46:17Speaker 2: he failed the physical and the rejection stung and he
- 46:22Speaker 2: never got over it. He noticed men's walks when he
- 46:26Speaker 2: went cruising for men years later, down by the Navy
- 46:29Speaker 2: yard or by bases in barracks. He liked a man
- 46:33Speaker 2: in uniform, but strange gates and large shoes attracted him
- 46:39Speaker 2: the most.
- 46:42Speaker 4: Now, Dave, did you really have to leave right then? Because,
- 46:48Speaker 4: as Thomas Wat considered a clown, Dave called it. I
- 46:53Speaker 4: would say that he would should work in McDonald's, but
- 46:57Speaker 4: he'd never get anything done because he'd be so horny
- 46:59Speaker 4: for Ronald an officer, Big Mac and that freaky little Hamburgler.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Oh gosh, I love that. Maybe our staff is kind
- 47:10Speaker 2: of peasing in the little things you've been putting in
- 47:13Speaker 2: our chats for the week, and maybe that'll make more
- 47:17Speaker 2: sense now.
- 47:19Speaker 3: Sometime, I love it.
- 47:21Speaker 2: Eventually, though, he met a man that he went out
- 47:24Speaker 2: with most knights, but after the man dropped him at home,
- 47:29Speaker 2: he would go looking for younger men. He met a
- 47:32Speaker 2: man named Tyrone, a handsome boxer with size twelve feet
- 47:37Speaker 2: who had come over to watch Dynasty. But Tom, Oh wow,
- 47:40Speaker 2: what a time capsule we're in. But Tom later recalled
- 47:45Speaker 2: we became the best of friends until I became obsessed
- 47:49Speaker 2: with him, which drove me to set his house afire,
- 47:54Speaker 2: and actually his aunt's house on Peabody and Third. She
- 47:58Speaker 2: was slightly injured and else was damage, just the basement
- 48:02Speaker 2: where he lived. I was glad she didn't get hurt. Now,
- 48:07Speaker 2: before he set the fire, he snuck into Tyrone's basement
- 48:10Speaker 2: room and stole all of his clothes and tennis shoes.
- 48:16Speaker 2: He later slept with the shoe on a pillow.
- 48:24Speaker 3: We all took a moment to think about the aroma
- 48:26Speaker 3: of sleeping with Tyrone's shoe.
- 48:29Speaker 2: Tyrone a handsome boxer.
- 48:31Speaker 3: Okay, he wants to watch Dynasty.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Come on, I mean, Tyrone sounds great, don't get me wrong.
- 48:37Speaker 4: Yeah, Like, oh, you're surprised he didn't want to hang
- 48:39Speaker 4: out with you more after you burned his aunt's house town.
- 48:44Speaker 4: But okay, well this is where we're starting to see
- 48:49Speaker 4: where he's coming from here how he thinks. So that
- 48:53Speaker 4: was the early eighties, about two decades before the police
- 48:57Speaker 4: even knew to look for him, and that was when
- 49:00Speaker 4: that's what began to feel like there was another person
- 49:03Speaker 4: inside of him. In nineteen eighty four, he was arrested
- 49:08Speaker 4: for stealing twenty five hundred dollars in jewelry.
- 49:11Speaker 3: From a man he went home with.
- 49:13Speaker 4: Oh after that, despite the uniforms, he had mixed feelings
- 49:18Speaker 4: about police officers, and the case against them was dropped
- 49:22Speaker 4: when he agreed to participate in court ordered diversion program.
- 49:26Speaker 2: In nineteen eighty four. They had those in nineteen 's.
- 49:29Speaker 4: Okay, so I mean, yeah, I don't know, twenty five
- 49:35Speaker 4: hundred dollars of jewelry, I don't know.
- 49:37Speaker 3: Maybe that the victim was part of that. I don't know.
- 49:41Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 49:44Speaker 4: So, of course, he was not diverted from his love
- 49:47Speaker 4: of fires, and by January eleventh, nineteen eighty five, he
- 49:51Speaker 4: had developed an early form of the method that would
- 49:54Speaker 4: become his pattern, and this is what he called his fantasy.
- 50:00Speaker 4: So a man Roy Piacot caught his eye on the
- 50:04Speaker 4: way home from his shift as a fry cook at
- 50:07Speaker 4: Roy Rogers. What followed Peacot home and watched him go inside.
- 50:13Speaker 4: He wanted to see him again, so we walked home,
- 50:17Speaker 4: changed out of his uniform, borrowed his sister's car, and
- 50:20Speaker 4: stopped at a gas station, filling in a plastic bottle
- 50:23Speaker 4: with gasoline.
- 50:25Speaker 3: Oh. He returned to Peacock's house and gently poured gasolene
- 50:30Speaker 3: under the front door, dropping it there with a towel.
- 50:33Speaker 2: That's when it does when you got a crash.
- 50:35Speaker 3: What are you gonna do? He lit a match and
- 50:41Speaker 3: the vapors caught fire, so the fire spread quickly inside
- 50:45Speaker 3: of the entryway where the gasoline sweat. Got back in
- 50:50Speaker 3: his sister's car and drove around. Before he looped back,
- 50:55Speaker 3: the man he wanted to see again was standing in
- 50:57Speaker 3: front of his house in his underwear, ignoring the severe
- 51:01Speaker 3: burns on.
- 51:01Speaker 4: Most of his body and the smoke in his lungs,
- 51:03Speaker 4: shouting that his wife and kids were still inside. What
- 51:07Speaker 4: could hear one of the boys calling for help from
- 51:09Speaker 4: the basement.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Oh, gosh, try You want to feel bad for this guy,
- 51:13Speaker 2: but then you're like ef, You buddy, Okay, wow. Now,
- 51:19Speaker 2: part of Sweat's fantasy is that a man would run
- 51:24Speaker 2: to him to be rescued from the fire. And I
- 51:28Speaker 2: guess fantasy is a good word for it because it
- 51:31Speaker 2: literally never happens. In all hundreds of fires never happens.
- 51:40Speaker 2: So what would imagine helping his victims, but instead would
- 51:44Speaker 2: sit and watch the fires burn and maybe touch himself
- 51:49Speaker 2: a little move were heading home for the evening. Freaking weird. No.
- 51:54Speaker 2: Roy Peacot died from his injuries and his partner, Bessie
- 52:01Speaker 2: may Duncan, never escaped the fire. Their four children were
- 52:06Speaker 2: injured but lived. A fire investigator ruled it to be
- 52:11Speaker 2: an accidental fire caused by a drop cigarette mere hours
- 52:19Speaker 2: after the fire occurred, even though no one in the
- 52:24Speaker 2: home smoked cigarettes. I'm not going to say why I
- 52:27Speaker 2: think they went ahead to rule that, but we all know.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Bessie may Duncan was described by a neighbor as generous
- 52:36Speaker 2: and friendly, bringing her a homemade cake every Christmas. She
- 52:41Speaker 2: also enjoyed tending to her vegetable garden and gifting fresh
- 52:44Speaker 2: tomatoes to her neighbors. Roy Pecott was thirty nine years
- 52:48Speaker 2: old and worked for the Washington Post. I didn't even
- 52:53Speaker 2: know who this guy was. That's what's crazy.
- 52:57Speaker 3: No, he like gay him, like the hay on the street,
- 53:02Speaker 3: you know, like he just like he acknowledged somebody that
- 53:05Speaker 3: passed him on the street and because he yeah, I
- 53:08Speaker 3: guess he was cute and had a funky walk.
- 53:10Speaker 2: Whatever that means.
- 53:12Speaker 3: So uh so sweat.
- 53:16Speaker 4: He did have different motives for different fires, but more
- 53:20Speaker 4: often than not, they were part of this sexual fantasy.
- 53:24Speaker 3: He said.
- 53:25Speaker 4: Fire is a tool to destroy, and somehouse fires also
- 53:29Speaker 4: become my fantasy of people scrambling to exit windows and
- 53:32Speaker 4: sort of feel like they need my help, so I
- 53:35Speaker 4: stay and watch. Then I masturbate over the fire while
- 53:39Speaker 4: driving away from the scene.
- 53:41Speaker 3: And never helping, not helping, although like not safe driving.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Come on, yeah, you can't see producer Amy.
- 53:56Speaker 3: She read the script. I know she read the script.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Now.
- 54:02Speaker 4: Thomas had been living in short term rentals around DC
- 54:05Speaker 4: for years before settling into the Southeast neighborhood in nineteen
- 54:10Speaker 4: ninety two. He found an affordable apartment in an old
- 54:13Speaker 4: two story brick house on the Bomb Street Southeast. It
- 54:17Speaker 4: was a bit of a rough area, but he grew
- 54:19Speaker 4: to love it eventually, writing I feel like that was
- 54:23Speaker 4: my world. The people were friendly. Not a lot of
- 54:26Speaker 4: money in the neighborhood, but everybody was happy, go lucky,
- 54:28Speaker 4: if you know what I mean. But that was the
- 54:31Speaker 4: good part of Tom that people saw and only knew.
- 54:34Speaker 4: Then when darkness fell, it was the other person living
- 54:37Speaker 4: inside of me.
- 54:41Speaker 2: Not great, not great Tom as the neighborhoods knew him,
- 54:46Speaker 2: was said to be kind and soft spoken. He worshiped
- 54:50Speaker 2: God and how to support family, and he took pride
- 54:53Speaker 2: in his job as a fry cook in fast food
- 54:57Speaker 2: in an industry with a high term of our rate.
- 55:00Speaker 2: He worked at Roy Rogers for twenty years and KFC
- 55:05Speaker 2: for twelve, being promoted to the manager, which is why
- 55:09Speaker 2: he went to the regional conference. He did and listen,
- 55:12Speaker 2: he excelled in it. So it hurt his feelings when
- 55:17Speaker 2: people told him that it wasn't a real job. And
- 55:20Speaker 2: I don't like that when people say that either.
- 55:22Speaker 3: Yeah, that is no time.
- 55:24Speaker 2: You're doing your job, you're paying your bills. Get over it.
- 55:28Speaker 3: For those people, he's doing a good job at the job.
- 55:30Speaker 2: Exactly, like who cares, Come on, exactly.
- 55:34Speaker 3: He wasn't in a que department. You don't know what
- 55:36Speaker 3: he's doing at night.
- 55:38Speaker 2: That's true, and it's time off from work, speaking of
- 55:42Speaker 2: which he read di y books, took pride in his
- 55:47Speaker 2: interior design skills and learned home renovations with his sister.
- 55:52Speaker 2: He would help out around the apartment building, mowing the
- 55:54Speaker 2: lawn and picking up trash. Look at that, he's a
- 55:56Speaker 2: friendly neighbor ish Just don't look at him. Don't walk
- 56:00Speaker 2: fungi or be a man. KFC co worker Jermaine Bryant
- 56:05Speaker 2: saw him as a mentor. Everybody complains, but he didn't,
- 56:10Speaker 2: Bryce went shared. Bryant once shared he'd be there at
- 56:13Speaker 2: six am every morning doing inventory. Everything he did was
- 56:19Speaker 2: so neat. He knew where everything was. He'd bring in
- 56:23Speaker 2: coffee and donuts for everyone in the morning. Just the
- 56:27Speaker 2: sweetest guy. You know who else did that? The fictional
- 56:30Speaker 2: character Dexter, who was a serial killer. That's who.
- 56:35Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, And Dexter also was like my dark passenger,
- 56:40Speaker 3: like right, extionalizing the bad parts of himself when it's
- 56:43Speaker 3: like no, that's just you, like.
- 56:46Speaker 2: Right, as Tom put it himself, KFC was very stressful
- 56:52Speaker 2: and I had little time for anything else. When coming
- 56:55Speaker 2: and leaving that restaurant, I put on a mask to
- 56:58Speaker 2: hide the other person who took over after closing because
- 57:02Speaker 2: he had two different sides, much like this, KFC is
- 57:07Speaker 2: also a pizza Oh my god, that's so perfect.
- 57:13Speaker 3: I love that.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Yeah, well they still exist. I'm pretty sure. Well we
- 57:16Speaker 2: have a Pizza Hot Taco Bell.
- 57:18Speaker 4: This this particular location turned into a Pizza Hot Taco
- 57:23Speaker 4: Bell or a KFC Talko bet and then close.
- 57:27Speaker 2: Wow. I wonder in their lane tacos and breadsticks at
- 57:33Speaker 2: the same time. Yes, please, I don't know.
- 57:37Speaker 4: I don't think Taco Bell needs help. Okay, talk about
- 57:40Speaker 4: them stand alone like the cheese.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Like cheese. I wonder if you met Colonel Sanders. I mean,
- 57:47Speaker 2: have you seen his the size of his shoes or
- 57:50Speaker 2: his gait? I have it sexy?
- 57:55Speaker 3: I found some weird Colonel Thanders stuff when looking for him,
- 57:58Speaker 3: just for this episode.
- 57:59Speaker 2: By the way, I'm so sorry. I don't know what
- 58:01Speaker 2: that means, but I'm sorry.
- 58:04Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I knew there was the like Mario
- 58:06Speaker 4: Lopez movie like romance movie where he's Colonel Sandards, but
- 58:10Speaker 4: I didn't know there was like anime games where he's
- 58:14Speaker 4: hot and you're romancing him.
- 58:15Speaker 2: Apparently Colonel Sanderds. Oh my god, you know there has
- 58:19Speaker 2: to be like weird fan fiction of Colonel Sanders. I'm
- 58:23Speaker 2: not saying it needs to be a member only reading,
- 58:26Speaker 2: but I think it should be.
- 58:29Speaker 3: Well, there's a lot of members only fan fictions to read.
- 58:33Speaker 2: That's true.
- 58:35Speaker 1: That's true.
- 58:37Speaker 4: Anyhow, So after Tom arrived on the bomb Street, so
- 58:43Speaker 4: did the fires. A garage, a restaurant, a laundromat, and
- 58:48Speaker 4: the barber who gave him a bad haircut burned twice.
- 58:52Speaker 2: Oh well, that's fair. Have you ever had a bad haircut?
- 58:55Speaker 2: I've cried before.
- 58:57Speaker 3: Maybe that was like when he got that sketch done.
- 59:03Speaker 2: Yes, took off the whole top of his head. I'd
- 59:06Speaker 2: be burning savage.
- 59:13Speaker 3: Welcome are you calling us weird? Lady and Gray?
- 59:17Speaker 2: I mean, she knows us.
- 59:20Speaker 3: It's going to continue. He's got other things too enjoy.
- 59:26Speaker 2: That's true.
- 59:28Speaker 4: So, as he later wrote, after doing it for so long,
- 59:32Speaker 4: it just became easier and easier. But the fear of
- 59:35Speaker 4: getting caught was always there. Each fire was like the
- 59:38Speaker 4: first time, and I'd always take a deep breath and
- 59:40Speaker 4: ask the Lord to forgive me for what I'm about
- 59:43Speaker 4: to do.
- 59:44Speaker 2: Right that works? Yeah? Yeah, cool?
- 59:48Speaker 3: Real, he's a good Christian man.
- 59:53Speaker 4: He bought the Toyota in two thousand and one, and
- 59:56Speaker 4: the radius of his terror grew blazing and to northeast DC,
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: near his work, and across county lines in New Maryland,
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: where the houses were bigger the rent steeper. He set
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: fire to a construction site and was proud that it
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: could be seen burning from a mile away.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: Whoa, it.
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: Hit a gas pipeline and yes, bikes over a million
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: dollars in damage.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: Oh wow, yeah, that'll do it. That explains that he's
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: in federal jail. This explains it. Okay, yike, okay, Well,
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: you guys, Colonel Sanders's fetishes are not normal.
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: That's I mean.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: Do you know what his gate is? Do you know?
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: I mean I was talking about weird, weird anime dating games,
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: and I would argue that almost every one of those
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: I've seen is not normal.
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: Like, no, there's one where you date tanks. So there's
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: one where your date a pigeon. Yeah, oh, they're all weird.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: Too much Internet, too much Internet. We're not gonna go
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: with that. So he didn't have any romantic relationships by then.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: As he told it, there were a few one nice stands,
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: so to speak, but nothing to hold on to. I
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: don't look to have a romantic relationship as a normal
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: human being would love roses and red wine sort of thing.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: Mine was more of choosing the person for crazy reasons
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: like h he has a nice, funky walk, or maybe
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: enjoy their companionship but don't come by often. Most of
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: these experiences, though ended violently, some involve police, and some
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: I took in the matters in my own hands hands.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: I bet he did. Are you. Are you mathematized by
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: that funky walk?
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: I am sorry, I am sorry, I was I was
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: looking at something else distracted. Sorry anyway, but dare you?
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: I was memorized by the funky walk and just sitting
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: here daydreaming about it. I never have you ever looked
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: at people's walks and been like, that's a good walk?
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: I have?
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: I think, well, I am very self conscious about my walk.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: Oh that's true.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: I think you don't notice other people's walks unless they're
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: like super weird.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: And I noticed my own walk because I'm like, oh, well.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: I stick it up. Let's say I'm in a restaurant,
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: right and I had to get up to the bathroom.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: It's like the most embarrassing. Why It's like, I don't
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: even know how to walk, because I think everyone in
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: the restaurant is watching me walk from the table to
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: the bathroom, even though nobody is. It's like I've forgotten
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: how to do. It'll be like hands straight, like weirdo.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Oh yeah, but I don't know what's a funky walk.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: I need to know. I mean you did, Kelly, of
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: course you did. I love you, Kelly. Don't change.
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: I was a way Yeah, it's it's a funky walk
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: to me is the beginning of Saturday night fever.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: All right, touchhae to sche all right. So his relationships
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: with men were more likely to end in fire. If
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: you wanted to see someone again, he had his method.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: That's how the fire started that killed lou Edna Jones.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: That's right, Mom Jones, alright. P Sweat followed her grandson home,
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: watched him check the mailbox. He wanted to see him again,
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: and he was part of sweats fantasy. Mama Lewis Son
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: or a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority uniform. I mean,
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: what is hotter than those sweater vest? Nothing?
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: I mean it probably is hot, Like if you're the
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: one wearing it, you're like Jesus Christ.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: Well, look at his time. That guy has a time
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: just saying he had the thing for uniforms. Interesting, interesting,
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: and sw sure hadn't forgotten his love of men in uniform, No,
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: he has not. He also enjoyed visiting different military barracks,
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: stealing uniform parts and whatever he could from unlocked cars,
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: and of course setting cars and buildings on fire, because
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: why on He'd videotape men coming and going from bases
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: and rec fruitment offices, and we know, we know what
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: he did with the footage later. What it's so weird.
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: It's so weird.
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: It is very weird. I will say. Every time the
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: word coming is written.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, okay, I bet, I bet carry right now
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: is like, thank freaking gad. I don't feel good. So
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: I didn't have to read this stuff.
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: I wondered about the timing of this, but hmmm, never,
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: I'm just shoking you, Terry. So he also set police
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: cruisers on fire.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: He didn't like what they stood for.
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: He later wrote, I burned police cruisers parked at the
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: station and some that were at their residence to me,
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: to me, they seem to have power because of their
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: badge and gun, and I felt powerful through when they
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: lost their vehicles. Some of the burned cars would remain
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: at the spot for many days, and I'd drive back
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: that night and just stare and smell the smoke.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: I'm sure we're just staring and smelling the smoke.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: One know.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: He began to watch Transit authority employees park their personal
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: cars in a liquor store parking lot and walk into work.
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: He would wait till the lot got more full, and
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: then torch the cars he found to be the sexiest,
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: like the Metro instructor Wade Powell's white.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: Mustang sixiest cars. Okay, walker and cars and shoes. What
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: is happening?
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: If a funky walk is going to do it for you,
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: I think a white Mustang's going to do it for you.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: Like Kelly, I am drinking tequila and margarita with more tequila,
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: so mango margarita. I don't know if it's enough. I'm
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: just saying so.
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: The owner of the liquor store got used to a
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: riving to work to smoldering cars and fire trucks, and
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: between the videotapes and diaries that he kepped of as fires, he.
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: Could relive the moments whenever he wanted. As the task
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: force suspected.
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: He also enjoyed following news coverage of his work, though
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: he didn't care for people who suggested he needed mental help, saying,
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: it's too bad I don't.
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: Know where you live, for you'd surely be on the list.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: Yikes. Do you think he thought fire fighters were hot too?
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: Their uniforms were? Because I feel like he probably did.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: How big are their feet?
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: Well? Look they do? They also?
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: Also? How dare he pretend to have a list?
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: But right suggests a uni mental health grow?
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: You do?
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: Okay? Like, all right, this isn't outlandish. Okay, So for
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: the record, Tom, you don't need to put us on
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: your list. Our feet are totally normal sized, so it's fine.
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: Don't call were fet it now? It does elbow feet
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: count as a large foot?
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: Maybe? Well, it's more about the shoes than the feet.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: I suppose, I don't. I don't How big were his feet?
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: I don't know. It's a good question.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: Do we know the size of his feet?
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: I couldn't swind out where he was from other than.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: Yeah, how does this either? How does someone get to
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: this point? Is what I want to know. I'm so
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: curious now, you guys, When he didn't pick a house
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: or a vehicle because of a sexy man or sexy car.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: He said he had his reasons a bike on the
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: porch that caught his eye, or houses that he found
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: to be designed poorly. Houses he thought looked like a
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: mechanic might live there. I mean, heaven forbid if a
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: mechanic lived there, Oh my gosh. And when all else failed,
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: he just picked a house with aluminum sighting because it
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: burned faster than the alternatives.
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: I think he assumed the mechanic would be hot.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: Only if he's in the uniform, right the the uh
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: jumper that they wear with oil.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: Oh.
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: I hope he's not listening. I don't want to turn
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: him on. He often watched the fires burn for as
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: long as he could, and yes, that meant he might
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: have had some close calls with police, especially once they
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: targeted thet their targeted stakeouts began. He enjoyed that, writing,
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: I like the attention from setting fires, the blue and
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: red light lights flashing from the fire trucks and police cars,
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: the rushing of firefighters hooking up the hoses to put
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: out the flames, and people gathered to watch. They were
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: an arms length to rest me. Sorry, I don't know
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: why I chose.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: To read it like that.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: Sorry, I apologize for our audience or making them all
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: very uncomfortable. Right then, So what never said why he
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: agreed to the DNA test? I guess what do you
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: say when asked for a bucle swab while trying to
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: keep the bride chicken moving? Yes, that's right, buckle, I
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: say bucle.
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: I was wondering. She said buckle today and Lori vallo
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: and I was like, it's that. No, I didn't assume
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: what was that? Okay, Yeah, I'd said.
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: Before, that's buhcle, it's buhcle. He did say he got
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: rid of his fire journal in two inciderary devices in
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: its car after the police visit. It had work. That
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: makes me sad because I don't want to read his
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: fire naughty journals, but I do at the same time.
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: Well, if it makes you feel any better, members of
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: the task for us think he's lying about that, okay?
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: Probably? Okay? When did he have the time to write anything?
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: Here said like five fires day filling people walking? He
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: had a free hand, but one thing has to hold
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: the cam quarder, then the other one was busy. Sil
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know how talented he is.
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: I don't know anyway. Task Force officers who have been
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: working around the clock for over a year said that
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: when they arrested Sweat, he seems more exhausted than they did.
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, he's he's open in the KFC at
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: six am, he's getting donuts on the way, and he's.
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: Up all night.
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: Setting fires, setting.
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: Fires and then thinking about it for a while.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: Getting a crotch fire. I guess that's what we can
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: call it. I don't know.
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: Sounds like you just go to the doctor.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: Oh God, why is Alafe sending me pictures right now?
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: I don't know is he getting? Is the end of
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: this a bunky walk?
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: You know?
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: It's just another car that went into a building. So
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: Folkswagon crashed into the Volkswagon dealership in Westerville. That's right, Sorry,
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: I was.
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: Just finding its way home. So we have now folded timelines.
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: We're back to April two thousand and five. Sweat had
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: been arrested and he confessed to setting fifty fires to homes,
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: apartment complexes.
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: And vehicles.
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: That also included two fatalities, Mama lu and Annie Brown.
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: Part of his plea agreement was two debriefings with the
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: US Attorney's Office, and four ride alongs with the task force.
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: Wait, question, why did it not include Peacock and his
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: white because or is this a spoiler?
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: He's going to find out about that later.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: Okay, Okay, I'm.
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: Sorry, No, it's okay.
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: We were so remembering that.
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: The story structure is a little weird. Here we went
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: through the path of the detectives, then his path. So
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: he's confessed to fifty fires at this point.
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: Okay, sorry, but.
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: He's going to do these ride alongs.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: I just want to adjust this for the Peacock family,
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: that's all.
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: They'll have to wait a while for it, but we'll
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: find that out.
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: All right. Because that is the fire chief and the
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: pink shirt.
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: There, that's Luckett. That is our boy, Bob Lockett. And
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: then Scott Fulkerson, our iron man, is the one with
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: the Oakley's.
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, so the ride along van team always included
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: Scott Fulkerson, Tom Daily, Bob Bluckett, and of course Thomas Sweat.
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: A fire investigator named Brian Rudinsky rode along with the
- 1:14:20Speaker 4: laptop with database access to corroborate Sweat stories, and depending
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: on what area they were touring, they would invite localized
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: Task Force members to join so they could hear the
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: stories firsthand. Now, two additional agents would follow in a
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: chase car in case Sweat tried to make a run
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: for it and he did not.
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: Well, I mean we knew that he didn't get Why
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: is there an ant on my computer screen? That's weird? Sorry,
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: and buy an weird? I mean we know he didn't
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: pass this physical for the military. I don't think it's
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: get running.
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: Soon, saying no, he's We're about to find out he's
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: having the time of his life.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: I bet he is. Sweat would point out locations he'd
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: set fire to and give details with startling accuracy. The
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: fires that the database already held match his description based
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: on time and part of origin. The fires that weren't
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: in the database would later be found elsewhere, sometimes ruled
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: as accidental. He originally confessed the fifty fires, but that
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: number continued to grow. Bob Luckett joked around with Sweat,
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: fostering a friendly relationship that helped keep Sweat talking. Tom
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: Dally said Sweat couldn't catch his breath, laughing luck it's nonsense.
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: That guy is so funny. It shows the bonds and
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: the bridge and then the ability to cross. That's how
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: profound luck It understood the mission when we were driving around.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: Luck It's mission was to get as much information regarding
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: all of these prior fires from Sweat to build a
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: wall would be a disaster. That Lucky guy. I want
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: to know how funny he is.
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: I made him the hulk nice nice, which doesn't really
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: fit his character that much, but he is. He's like
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: a kind of he's a football player.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: Where's black weddes? Say? Is going down?
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: What's happening?
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: Nothing? Don't worry about me, am I with Sweats cooperation,
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: the task force closed three hundred and fifty three cases. Yeah, guys,
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: three hundred and fifty three. That is wild. Yeah, And
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: I feel like that's not even all of them. To
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: be honest, I think he probably forgot about a bunch.
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: She'd be quite right, no, because there's yeah, that's most
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: of them that we're aware of. But okay, And he did,
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: like they were saying, that guy that was checking the database.
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: It was like.
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: He would say, oh, I did this at two am,
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: and then like thirty minutes later he'd be like, you
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: know what, I'm sorry. Actually it was five am, and
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: he'd look it up and it was like it was
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: at four or fifty eight am. Like interesting, he really
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: remembered these things, and I guess having the journal maybe helped.
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: I don't know how long he kept the journal.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: But I mean, can you forget when you see a
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: walk that you have to funky walk that you have
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: to follow home and burn their house down? You just
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: don't really forget, or a bike or a bike or
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: looking at your wrong.
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: A wrench, maybe mechanic clubs there, I don't know, might
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: as well born in designs. That is kind of my
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: favorite of the motives.
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: Like the example given was like the front of the
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: house looked exactly like the back of the house, so
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: I thought.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: It was shit, so I burned it down. Okay, Okay.
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: So Thomas Sweat pleaded guilty on June sixth, two thousand
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: and five, So hey, yeah, this that hour in two
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: thousand and five. This case kind of started in two
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: thousand and three, but then they found out it had
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: been going on for decades really, so two thousand and five,
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: he plied guilty. On September eleventh, he was sentenced to
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: life in prison, which was not a surprise, as Jim Trusty.
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: Said, this is the long one, guys, so bear with me.
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: Eventually, the sentencing was almost anti climactic because we had
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: backed up these charges called eighteen USC. Nine twenty four C,
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: which is use of a destructive device in connection or
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: in furtherance of a crime of violence. So it's a
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: five year mandatory for the first defense, it's twenty five
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: for the next one. It's consecutive, and then it's life.
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: So when you get to three or more of these,
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: you know that the judge has almost no discretion. Yeah,
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: they have to enroll license.
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: And then we also had murders from DC and standalone
- 1:19:29Speaker 4: urs counts, So his overall numbers sentencing were life plus
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: sixteen hundred months, which is kind of nonsensical in terms
- 1:19:37Speaker 4: of what he's really going to do. But again, we
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: had federal statutes that applied to serial arson, and when
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: there's death resulting from it, and when there are multiple
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: uses of devices, then the stakes get astronomical. So his
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: attorney knew early on, Look, the best we can do
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: is ask for which prison we're going to.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: Pretty much at that point you're at so, oh.
- 1:20:02Speaker 3: Good night, Terry, I'm sorry I'm putting you to sleep
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: of my federal statutes.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: That's sweet dreams.
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: So add his sentence thing we said, I'm very sorry
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: for all of the harm that I've caused you. To
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: those who have lost loved ones, I share your hurt
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: and I share your pain every day. That wasn't enough
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: for Mamulu's daughter, Caroline Jones, who later said that he
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: deserved the same fate he'd given her mother.
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: No, DC Mayor Anthony Williams said after Sweat's arrest, in
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: a sense, all of us were victims of the serial arsonist.
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: All of us were on edge, not knowing when this
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: person would strike next.
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: Any fare that many fires, I mean all over the place,
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: I'd be a little and literally you could like not
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: even have known this guy. You passed them on the street.
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: You didn't even know he's filming you, and they decided
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: you want to burn your house down because the way
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: you walked, Or maybe you're a little too small, or
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: they're too shiny, I don't know. Maybe is that why
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: shoe shiners went out in the style this guy?
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: No, I bet you in DC they still have them.
- 1:21:25Speaker 4: Also, Amos, it's interesting that you say the DC sniper
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: because our boy Tom daily or as I've made him
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: Captain America. He worked on that case and he was
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: brought to d c uh to work in the Pentagon
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: after nine to eleven and then Sniper. He did the
- 1:21:43Speaker 4: anthrax mailings in this case, and I realized it's probably
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: not like a good wording to say he did the
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: anthrax mailing.
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: That's true, but he investigated them.
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: That's very interesting. So he retired yet so he can
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: talk to him.
- 1:22:00Speaker 3: He has retired. He is teaching crew at high school
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: in DC. That is the only lecture of him on
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: the internet.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: That's interesting. Well, I mean he's so uh no, that's
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: three hundred fifty three fires I think for decades, not
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: just in the yeah, two years. But I feel like
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: there's probably a load. Yeah, like you had to have
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: been doing this since he was a I mean major probably. Well,
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: he's funny, is.
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: He says the first he said, the first one is
- 1:22:31Speaker 3: that Tyrone with the where they watched Dynasy together, and
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: that was like a guy he got obsessed with, like
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: a friend of his who got obsessed with and.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: I'm blame it on Tyrone. Okay, So but and that
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: was you know, he was a young adult.
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: I guess that was the eighties, early eighties.
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: Yeah, so interesting. So from federal prison in terry HoTT, Indiana,
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: Thomas replied to a letter sent by journalist Dave Jamieson.
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: It was less than six months from his sentencing, maybe
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: he was still in the mood to confess, and their
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: correspondence was the basis for Jamison's award winning articles Letters
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: from an Arsonist. The motives that Sweat had kept under
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: wraps in courts he now put out for the world
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: to read. And that article also brought a bit of
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: closure to the family of Roy Pecott and Bessie may Duncan.
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: They finally learned the truth about what happened in their
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: house why they bear emotional and physical scars. In thirty
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: three years after the fire that killed their parents, their
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: desks were reclassified as homicides. Well, but I'm still so
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: mad about the investigation.
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: But yeah, well, and that's the thing. That's why there's
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: probably all these all these fires that weren't attributed to him,
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: because everybody was just like, yeah, it's a cigarette. The
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: whole family said, you know, nobody smokes cigarettes here. So
- 1:24:17Speaker 4: if his writings can be believed, it's what himself does
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: show signs of regret for the death he caused, and
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: maintains his faith in prison. God has been merciful and kind.
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: I want to obey and keep his will, for I'm
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: no longer worried about this life, but the life afterwards.
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: There's still hope for us all. No matter where we are,
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: this old, mortal body will soon be no more, but
- 1:24:44Speaker 4: the soul will go to heaven or hell. I'm glad
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: to know God as a forgiving God, and there is
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: no sin so great he will not forgive. Isn't that
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: a wonderful thought?
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: Right? And as a counterpart, in the words of Mamulu's
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: oh this grand Darlene, it would be better if he
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: sat down and kept his mouth shut. He's not sorry.
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: Well on that. What a wild story, you guys. I
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: kind of tried to warn you guys that it wasn't
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: necessarily what you thought it would be about. But yeah,
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: go ahead and put your thoughts of what you've heard
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: tonight in the chat and we might read some of them.
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: But wow, you guys are doing that. How we give
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: our closing thoughts? Capn what are yours?
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: Well?
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: So this is the first time I really dug into
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: an arson case, and I hadn't really thought about how
- 1:25:42Speaker 4: difficult it is to convict arseness, Like it's a crazy
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: low rate of conviction.
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: Interesting, and.
- 1:25:51Speaker 3: It's crazy that this guy got caught and that they
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: had the opportunity to talk to him. So it's like
- 1:26:00Speaker 3: then there's also his motives, which are also very unusual.
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: It's been said that he's the only known arsonist with
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: predominantly sexual motives.
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: So interesting.
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: This guy is a unicorn and he's also a creep.
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: And I'm surprised he didn't kill more people given his
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: mo of starting fires in the middle of the night
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: when people would be asleep, but that.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: We even know of. Even that was of, Yeah, they
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: could have died later from smoke in elation or something.
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: Well he yeah, actually he didn't know that Roy Peacock
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: died because he died like, uh later in the hospital,
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: so he found out later. He also called him Roy Peacock.
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:26:49Speaker 4: I will say all of his quotes were heavily edited
- 1:26:52Speaker 4: because his spelling is crazy. He spells fantasy with a
- 1:26:54Speaker 4: pH two. So yeah, and I'm I mean, I don't
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: know if I can say what I want to say.
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: He should have just sucked a clown.
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: I mean, big feet, funny walks.
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: He could have saved everybody a lot of trouble. Yeah,
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: got a therapist and tucked a clown.
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: I mean, look how easy that solution was, right. You know,
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: I've found that cereal arsonists are hardly talked about in
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: the true crime world, Like you never hear about them
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: hardly ever, And so I've always found them very fascinating
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: to an interesting to like learn about. And you know,
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: I've often wondered, like what makes them tick to set fires?
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: And usually the ones I've heard have been people that
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: are firefighters. But you know, I they do say that
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: if you're going to ask a question, you better be
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: for the answer. And I was not prepared for any
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: of the answers in the story, and not a single one,
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: not even I thought the fire was pretty, and I
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: just like the way it looked. No, No, the answers
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: we got some of the craziest things I have ever heard.
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: And you know, it did remind me a little bit
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: a little bit of Jeffrey Dahmer because this would have
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: been earlier, around the same period as the two as
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: two gay men, during a time when it wasn't quite okay.
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: They had to live a different life, they didn't feel
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: comfortable about it, and then they developed a very weird
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: sex and attraction things, and you know, you kind of
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: have to wonder like, yeah, okay, there's already something a
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: little bit effed up about them, you know. But then
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: at the time, especially during the eighties, with the AIDS
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: crisis and everything going on, they couldn't even be themselves,
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: let alone be their weird ass selves, you know. So
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: in some way I do have a little sympathy there
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: of like, what if they live today, where it's a
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: more open world, more accepting world, maybe we didn't need
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: fires in, you know, killing a bunch of people.
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: But whenever it is, yeah, it's easier, it's easier to say, oh,
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: fuck a clown. The answer is really let kids. Let
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: kids be who they are.
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: Now. I must say, if if you look on his
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: Wikipedia the page, it's fairly there considering all we've said tonight,
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: because I looked at it tonight because I wanted to
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: see if he was still alive. And when I looked
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: at it, I was like, why is there nothing on
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: his Wikipedia page? So I must say that Captain did
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: a fantastic job in researching this case because she did
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: all the hard work. I'm just here as me. I
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: guess I don't even know why I'm here, but I
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: hear she had a fantastic job researching this case, and
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: I know I'm going to be thinking about it for
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: a while, as is our chat. So please show Captain
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: some love in the chat and in our comment section,
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: because we have a whole team of people that do
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: all sorts of things and they do a fantastic job
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: at what they do. So before we go into our
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: wrap up, let's just see what some of the other
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: people had to say about how they felt about this case.
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: Amy Best says that was definitely wild. So any days
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: wants to know how old are you? I don't know
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: which twenty wants us to know, but we're older than
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: probably what you think we are. Kelly p says he
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: was a psycho. Yes, yes, yes he was. That's it's
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: so crazy, so crazy. Lady and Gray says, that was
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: a crazy story. Great job lomming cappin excellent research. Cabin agreed,
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: you know, because she was like, I have never even
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: heard this case. I was like me either, it's an arsonist,
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: so how about it? And then she starts to feel like.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: But then I'm what is happening?
- 1:31:18Speaker 4: Immediately I was like, there's foot stuff here, so you
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: know this is the footstuff case.
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: And I'm like what, Like we were all picking cases
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: a couple of weeks ago, and I was like, it's fine,
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: it's just an arsonist whatever.
- 1:31:34Speaker 3: I'm like, I'll take I'll take whatever. I don't care.
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: And boy, were we all surprised if it's not just
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: about that. Sam says, what a wild ride? Oh yet
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: not your unicorn? Sam? No, no, no, Kelly says surprised
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: that he hasn't caused a fire in prison. Ooh, that's good.
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: But he's in federal prison. So he's still alive. By
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: the way, Yeah, that's why I looked up before the show.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: I was like, oh, is he still lut Yep, he
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: is still lot in federal prison Virginia.
- 1:32:05Speaker 3: Yeah, he's back in Virginia.
- 1:32:06Speaker 4: I don't know why he went to tear Hote, Like,
- 1:32:08Speaker 4: I know that's a big prison, but I heard that
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: he went from Virginia to Indiana back to Virginia.
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: I feel like Terry hoats where they put like really
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: not great people. So one of my friends from there, oh, Okay,
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: that's like literally all they have is that prison and.
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: Clapp Girl baking powder. What that means it's a brand
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: of baking powder. There's the baker's in the chat when
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: her No, there's like there's a two big brands of
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: baking powder and one of them is claver Girl and
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: that's from there. Oh all they have? Oh yeah, my friend,
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: who's awesome?
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: Hey, where's for KFC Savage? That's right? And Horry Rogers. Yes,
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: if you're like in good place, I mean yeah, big feet,
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: funny walk. Ronald McDonald was probably terrified. I mean just
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: his his type. So I don't know what you'all watch.
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: You know, we're where, this is us. This is us.
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: We look into weird things. I don't know why we
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: do what we do around here, but we do. Hello,
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: Scott metalhead, a little late to the party, might want
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: to rewind. I don't know if you really want to
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: hear this story. Actually, have you just found us? I
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: don't know if this is a good way to introduce
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: you to us, But here we are talking about weird
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: stuff and weird crime. So anyway, I will never look
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: at shiny shoes the same.
- 1:33:46Speaker 3: No, why do you think that was, you know, I
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: just I think it's like daddy isshoes. Probably he started
- 1:33:55Speaker 3: with his uncle and his dad's shoes, right, yeah, So
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: I mean, unless it's just kind of like.
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: An early coming to terms with the sexuality, like conflating
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: those shoes with masculinity.
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: I don't know. I'm major from fashion design.
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: I don't know. I want to read more about this guy,
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: to be honest, and surely won't know.
- 1:34:20Speaker 4: But Letters from an Arsonist is amazing, and that's that
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: is from his point of view. I mean, because it
- 1:34:27Speaker 4: is this journalist reading letters from this guy while he's
- 1:34:32Speaker 4: in prison. But there's also a six or seven part
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: podcast that's just called Arson and that is all of
- 1:34:40Speaker 4: the task course, like giving their side of the story.
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: Fascinating. I'm probably going to go read and watch that
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: stuff over the next couple of weeks for sure, because.
- 1:34:48Speaker 3: They're both really good.
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: The podcast especially like it goes into such minute detail
- 1:34:53Speaker 4: and it's all these different you know, it's like the
- 1:34:55Speaker 4: DNA person like that. You know, it's like every there's
- 1:34:59Speaker 4: people that are not in here because we couldn't fit
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: into the time frame. If you were wondering who the
- 1:35:05Speaker 4: black widow was, Teresa stoop.
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:35:09Speaker 3: Also, the things she did were a little more removed,
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: so she didn't make them the story.
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: But yeah, oh wow, And to have so many different
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: motives and reasons for doing it is very peculiar and weird.
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: I don't know, I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed. All right. Well,
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: let's go ahead and wrap up because we are a
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: little over time tonight. But I think you guys understand
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: why we had a lot to share. Oh wait, before
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: we do, Kelly pe gifted one true Crime time and
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: my membership. Thank you so much, Kelly for your support
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: of the channel, and whoever just became a new member, welcome.
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: We have some members only videos that you can watch.
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: They're kind of crazy right now. Apparently I said some
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: stuff that Capin couldn't handle this morning, but she was like,
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: Capin told for you Lola's mom, Well, I'm not gonna
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: finish that.
- 1:36:08Speaker 3: Oh I remember what I said last night? Yeah.
- 1:36:11Speaker 4: I couldn't catch the live stream for the most part,
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: so I watched it by myself later with no chat
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: and was just like, what is happening this chat?
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: Loma's mouth is blue, like Terry possibly fell asleep on stream?
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: She did, Yeah, she was on a lot of pain
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: pulling off her.
- 1:36:30Speaker 4: Yeah, she had a good reason, but I was and
- 1:36:34Speaker 4: they kept bringing me up talking about I'll defeat something
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: highly questionable I need to talk about I don't know
- 1:36:41Speaker 4: privately with him.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: It was a hot dog from it. Oh. I was
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: just saying, I thought you would like the Ken Allen
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: a Rangon Tang story. Yeah, I feel like you would
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: have an Orain Gang shirt.
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: I mean, I'm not gonna lie. It was kind of
- 1:36:58Speaker 3: freaked me out.
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: Oh, but you, as I have shared with you, I
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: do love Coco. I love Coco and the cat I
- 1:37:08Speaker 4: grew up on that.
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: That was DC checking.
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: Savage is our security. He bets everybody that comes in.
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: I'm just kidding. He doesn't do that, but he apparently
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: does now. Oh gosh, Well, before we go, let's wrap up, Kavin.
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: Why don't you hit us off about our little promos
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: and then we'll sign off for the Then.
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: All right, so before we go, if you like what
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: you heard tonight, be sure to follow all of our
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: socials and subscribe to our YouTube channel, which is free
- 1:37:38Speaker 4: to do. If you're listening to our pod, please download
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: and give us a rating. All of that helps us
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: tremendously in getting our channel out there. Yes, now next
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: week on True Crime and one time is the title
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: of the thumbnail, What really happened on Dack Night? Mm hmmm,
- 1:38:01Speaker 4: this is the Lannie coach Chante's story. Guess Coconte's Cocontas. Okay, uh,
- 1:38:09Speaker 4: so be sure to be here at eight pm Eastern
- 1:38:12Speaker 4: because you do not want to miss this one.
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: It's aquatico on who knows what we're suffer gonna tie
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: into that? And I don't know. I know that Terry
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: has been working on this while she's been under pain killers,
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: so I have no idea how it's gonna go.
- 1:38:29Speaker 3: It's gonna be interesting.
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: She's gonna be like, here, edit this and then we'll
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: all be like, hmm but do we though, doe we
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: Maybe we just go on your fever dream Terry. I
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: don't know. Let's just see what happens.
- 1:38:39Speaker 3: For I think yeah, I think it should be read
- 1:38:41Speaker 3: for a batim.
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: We'll see anyway, it'll be very interesting. That'll be next Thursday.
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: Go ahead and tell them what time in case you didn't.
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: Oh, eight, that is eight pm Eastern on Thursday.
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: Yes, yes, okay, Now, if you need more of Terry
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: and I you. You can always find us doing something
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: on our True Craving Lindesime YouTube channel every Monday and
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: Wednesday except for the rest of June. Okay, Terry usually
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: hosts her show Midday Missing, where she covers missing person
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: cases that don't seem to get a lot of attention.
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: We're going to have to take a hiatus on that
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: for the rest of June because Terry needs time to
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: get better and Lama already does a bunch of shows
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: and I do love doing Midday Missing, but sometimes Mama
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: needs to sleep. But they are available on our podcast
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: wherever you listen to your podcast or on our YouTube channel,
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: you can check out past episodes and give them the
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: attention that they deserve and maybe maybe you just might
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: know something to help one of the cases. Then, of
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: course I have my show Couch Court with Lama, where
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: we are currently covering the Lori Vallo Devo trial. Tomorrow
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: is the last day of that. We're gonna watch last
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: day verdicts already out. We already know how it's going
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: to go. That'll be at eight thirty am tomorrow for
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: Couch Corwathlama with Me, and then after Couch corew with Lama.
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: We're going to go right into couch Confessions where the
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: lovely Lady and Gray. That's right, Lady and Gray is
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: going to come on and tell us about her experience
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: serving on a jury. Okay, and it's pretty good. See
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: you guys, I want to miss that. That'll be at
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: one o'clock PM Eastern tomorrow, and then after that it's
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: the weekend, y'all. So I'm excited, but my weekend is
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: still busy. You know why because I also do a
- 1:40:35Speaker 2: couch Core with Lama after Dark, which is all about
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: the Sean Dittycombs federal sex trafficking Rico case, and we're
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: a little behind on that, but we're going to catch
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: up this weekend. And some of the stuff that has
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: come out about it is absolutely shocking to hear, Like

- 1:41:06Speaker 3: It's a Dynasty.
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: It's not Dynasty, but it does start with a D,

- 1:41:13Speaker 2: it's a sex case, not freak off de But anyway,
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: if you want to become a member on our YouTube channel,

- 1:41:42Speaker 2: other channels, when you actually become a member, we're working
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: very hard to give you stuff, so we appreciate everyone's contributions.
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: And if you can't be a member, that's okay. We

- 1:41:58Speaker 2: you go to join, there's three dots in the top
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: right click that you're going to see gift membership, the
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: preferences or something, and you just turn it on and
