- 0:34Pen Knife for doing quicker, quicker.
- 0:39Welcome back to our hamster with a blump pen knife.
- 0:43A Doctor Who Commentaries podcast.
- 0:48Pete Lambert I am here today with two of the finest gentleman
- 0:53that I know, Mr. Fraser Gregory and Mr. Simon Hart.
- 0:57Hello. Hello.
- 0:58Hello. Hello, I'd like to talk to you
- 1:01gentlemen about padding. And that's not the padding
- 1:05around people's waist, but you know, gratuitous material in
- 1:11Doctor Who's stories. Why am I asking that in Planet
- 1:16of Spiders episode 2, I hear you ask?
- 1:19It's just a coincidence, isn't it it?
- 1:21Might. Be Is this the ultimate example
- 1:26of padding in Doctor Who? Can you think of a a more
- 1:29gratuitous example than this? Sigh.
- 1:32No, Aaron, it's it's indulging your star who is leaving the
- 1:39show. And even Barry Letts says in the
- 1:44commentary that, yeah, you get to the end and think, well, why
- 1:49didn't he just do that at at the start of this chase?
- 1:53But actually, actually, I never noticed because you get swept
- 2:00up, you know, it's it is what it is.
- 2:05To coin that horrible, I really hate that phrase.
- 2:08I don't know why I've said that. I don't like that phrase, but
- 2:11it's, it's all right. You know, it's for, for this
- 2:18story. It's allowed.
- 2:22Right, either. It's the mother of all padding,
- 2:26isn't it? It's the mother of all padding.
- 2:28It's the mother of all chasinges.
- 2:30And that is exactly what we want in this story.
- 2:35Going back to what I said in episode one, this is everything
- 2:38you want from a Pertwee story You know on drugs.
- 2:45It's Bessie and The Who mobile and the helicopter and the
- 2:50speedboat and the hovercraft and a police car.
- 2:54Not just a hovercraft, it's a hovercraft going over a tramp.
- 2:58Exactly. This is what you want from the
- 3:01purple era. This is what you can't expect.
- 3:03So this is when you are celebrating this era.
- 3:07You do this. You have a chase in there.
- 3:09But you don't just have any chase.
- 3:10You have the biggest chase you can possibly think of.
- 3:14And if it's padding, so be it. But my word, this episode is
- 3:18glorious, Because we have a. Turned off to the right
- 3:22Brigadier. In C and it's got Stuart Fell,
- 3:27it's got Pat Gorman, it's got fucking everything.
- 3:30Chubby oats? Then you've got chubby bloody
- 3:34host. I know.
- 3:36Well, my second. Question was going to be why is
- 3:37it so enjoyable? Given that the plot doesn't move
- 3:40on at all, but I think Mark Gatiss is it best.
- 3:44He says a lot of very clever things about it in the
- 3:46documentary. In the there's no sort of
- 3:49narrative to the chase. It's not like, you know, you
- 3:52have to in order to get to the next piece of equipment in the
- 3:55chase that they have to go through anything.
- 3:57It's like a relay race right there we go across the sea.
- 4:01Oh, it just happens to be that that handy car just waiting
- 4:04there, you know, It's almost like a relay race of vehicles.
- 4:09Fuck me. I mean, have we ever had this
- 4:10much location work in in an episode before this?
- 4:14I mean probably if you look again at something like
- 4:16Ambassadors of Death where they have that giant, you know,
- 4:22ambush of the, the low loader with the space capsule on and
- 4:27all the. Sea devils.
- 4:28Yeah. But all of those, I think all of
- 4:31those set pieces do have sort of plot functions, yes, you know.
- 4:37Yeah, we've not done it just because we've queued up all this
- 4:41stuff that pert we've seen while he's been out and about and
- 4:44said, oh, I'd love to get this in the show, I'd love to get
- 4:46this in the show, you know, and and so well, of course they do.
- 4:50They're they're giving it to their leading man.
- 4:52It's his prize. There's a glorious.
- 4:56Thing on YouTube a video of Jon Pertwee to a stable colour to I
- 5:00Need A Hero by Connie Tyler, right?
- 5:03And it's all the things of him, you know, doing his James Bond
- 5:06throughout the era. And about 10 minutes of this
- 5:09episode's in there, because it's all in here, isn't?
- 5:12It I mean that that was that sequence, wasn't it?
- 5:15In more than 30 years in the TARDIS, wasn't it?
- 5:17With all of these sort of perk wee bits with the with the James
- 5:21Bond theme up to who theme mash up going on at the same time
- 5:26that. Turned off to the right
- 5:27Brigadier. Brigadier, Yes, we all remember
- 5:29that line because of that montage.
- 5:32But I think it's what I said in the last episode that I think
- 5:35Barry let's his direction is strongest when he's sort of
- 5:37focusing on the actors. Actually.
- 5:39I think his film work in this is really, really strong.
- 5:44Yeah, there's some very interesting shots.
- 5:47So particularly when they're on the on the on the river shore
- 5:52before the boat chase and some some really nicely lined up
- 5:55shots of the the the location. So yeah, it's it's interesting.
- 6:01It's good, yeah. Well, are you just prepared to
- 6:04watch this chase in action then? Yep.
- 6:07You might not get much commentary out of us because I'm
- 6:08just going to be watching it, but yeah, let's go.
- 6:10OK. We've got 20.
- 6:12Minutes of adrenaline ahead. Ourselves while we go round and
- 6:14round and. I'm.
- 6:17Just we're the greatest hits. Yeah.
- 6:20Especially that Homer. Bill.
- 6:21My God. Well, somebody counters in then.
- 6:25God, I'll count you as in this one in 54321 fly.
- 6:37Concentrate. Concentrate.
- 6:42I think there's a couple of scenes towards the beginning of
- 6:44the episode, isn't there? Before we get into the chase in
- 6:46uni. Yeah, because the Doctor and
- 6:48Sarah Jane finally meets. Yes, right.
- 6:51Yeah, I'll get this. Doesn't she say to him?
- 6:53You never listen to what I'm saying.
- 6:55Yeah, there's that lovely scene where she's she's sort of
- 6:57talking about. So if the giant spiders on
- 7:00Metabolis free are. Metabolis.
- 7:05Sigh. There aren't any giant spiders
- 7:07on Metabolis 3. Or at least they weren't do.
- 7:12You think Do you think this, this story would have worked
- 7:14back on Mars? No, I think it would.
- 7:18Have been as inadequately realized.
- 7:22I think because Metabolis, even I was going to do it metabolis,
- 7:27because metabolis free is so much a part of two seasons of
- 7:34Doctor Who and it had lots of mentions and things like that.
- 7:38I think it is it. It feels kind of right that they
- 7:42they go back. Yeah, but come on, Ziggy, Perky
- 7:45and the spiders from Mars now. It's.
- 7:51One of the most brilliant decisions of this story to give
- 7:55the spiders female voices. Yeah, that's a great choice.
- 8:01It. Means you get to bring in these
- 8:04fabulous actresses, don't you, Maureen Morris and.
- 8:07Kismet Delgar. Yeah, that's.
- 8:10And that's a lovely and Usain Churchman as well.
- 8:14I think the fact that they can lead those great heights and
- 8:17nano people back was a savvy move.
- 8:22I think you know we've talked or certainly I have.
- 8:25This is the greatest hits of Pertwee and and there is just
- 8:29that one thing missing, isn't there?
- 8:31And that is the master. Yeah.
- 8:34And it would have been the. The final game.
- 8:38Yeah, it would have been the showdown between the mole them
- 8:41both. But I wonder if if that would
- 8:44have changed Doctor Who. If they'd done that and they'd
- 8:48actually killed the Master off. I don't think anyone would have
- 8:52brought the Master back. I think he might have stayed as
- 8:55a pert. We era only thing.
- 8:58Possible. I think probably.
- 8:59Not. I mean, they kill him off a lot
- 9:00in the 80s. Yeah, but they weren't doing
- 9:03that. My God, this.
- 9:05You bastard. Yeah, I think.
- 9:11I'm not. I'm not necessarily sure that
- 9:13killing off, killing off the Master would have been, you
- 9:16know, to be on an end. All because certainly, yeah,
- 9:19people are keen to bring him back.
- 9:21I think if they went ahead with the plan to make The Master the
- 9:25Doctor's brother, that might have been a bit more impactful
- 9:31because we don't all know how how fans love, you know,
- 9:33continuity bombs like that can. You imagine the show, though,
- 9:37without, you know, Beavers and and Ainley and Gomez and Sam and
- 9:44Dewan and and Pratt all right? World without Eric Roberts
- 9:58dressing for the occasion in a boat.
- 10:02It would be a sorry place. The question I was going to ask
- 10:06is, is how much do you think Lupton fills the role of the
- 10:10Master in this story? I think really interesting
- 10:14villain. I.
- 10:16Think more interesting than the master is?
- 10:18Yeah, I would absolutely agree. I think the the motivation of
- 10:24Lupton, because he's a middle manager who's been passed over
- 10:28for for promotion, is so down to earth and prosaic and all of
- 10:34that happens because he's an angry man at his lot in life.
- 10:39I think that's. Very scary, yeah.
- 10:43Doesn't I always feel like he's just on the verge of snapping,
- 10:46of punching someone of you know, and I've kind of I've known men
- 10:49like this. I've certainly known middle
- 10:50managers that you know have been passed over for promotion.
- 10:54I've been super angry about it. I'm not talking about me there
- 10:57and. He's there to get in touch with
- 10:58his feelings, yeah, in a way that that men in the 1970s
- 11:03didn't and. Well, he's not.
- 11:05That's the thing. I mean, no.
- 11:07Everyone else is there. That's it.
- 11:08He's not. Not do we get any of the stuff,
- 11:10really. He's there.
- 11:12For that I came half our power. But there is an aggression to
- 11:17his performance, like where Delgado's all charm, you know?
- 11:22Yeah, there's like. A lion?
- 11:24Yeah. And that's he's not a man you'd
- 11:27want to get on the wrong side of at all.
- 11:31And you know, like he's quite violent as well, isn't he?
- 11:33Yeah. And Barry, let's again in the
- 11:37commentary he said there was a lot of John Deere in that
- 11:42character where he was a man who'd been passed over for
- 11:44something that that made him bitter and angry, and there was
- 11:50always that element to him as well.
- 11:53We got a row in a film, didn't he?
- 11:54A big and he looked like James Mason.
- 11:58Yeah, and some. And the direct.
- 12:01The director cast him and the producer said no, we're not
- 12:03having him. And so he was quite a bitter
- 12:05man. Never.
- 12:06Never. Recovered from it so.
- 12:09It's so different from his performance as boss as well,
- 12:12isn't it? Which is?
- 12:13Playful and fun and but again, a great voice.
- 12:18But what I like about it is it isn't like the clash of the
- 12:21equals. It is in no way the doctors
- 12:23equal like the master is no. But the spiders give him that
- 12:28power. Yeah.
- 12:32And a bit like, like you said, the bit on the banks of the
- 12:35river in a minute where that fella's just there with his boat
- 12:37and he comes along and and just. Jumps in, yeah.
- 12:42I think he's great and and how they sort of prey on his lust
- 12:46for for power and just or just to feel important, you know,
- 12:50he's a bit pathetic, yeah. I think the thing that makes him
- 12:56most like the master of my book is it's that classic.
- 12:59You know he throws his lot in with an alien power which then
- 13:02double crosses him. But then you get that brilliant
- 13:06scene where he double backs and starts torturing the spider it.
- 13:11Does. But after that, he's very much
- 13:13just like, yeah, oh, I'm now just under the two leg and you
- 13:20know, I'm just going to be like fodder for the for the spiders.
- 13:22As the story goes on, he kind of Peters out and I'll think all
- 13:25that's missing is. He's not needed to drive the
- 13:28plot anymore, is he? No, that's.
- 13:30All that's missing is the bit where he actually needs to team
- 13:32up with the Doctor to save his own ass, which will be classic
- 13:36Season 8. Is he killed?
- 13:39I mean, I can't even remember. Yeah.
- 13:40Yeah. He's killed at the end.
- 13:43The spiders kill him. Sorry, the eight legs.
- 13:49I wanted to say as well, you know, at the beginning of this
- 13:51episode when the spider appeared, does Eddie Companion
- 13:54do fear better than Elizabeth Slayden?
- 13:56That sort. Of wide eyed fear.
- 13:59She does. That's what she auditioned for,
- 14:03though, wasn't it? Classic tale that, you know, the
- 14:05one that would be. What was it?
- 14:07What was her audition? Was it brave?
- 14:08And brave and scared at the same time with Stephen Fawn.
- 14:15Oh, it was Katie Man in that hat they were.
- 14:17Imagine the, the, the. Oh, the hat stands.
- 14:20Yes, that is right. Yeah, turning into a snake or
- 14:22something. Yeah, and that's what.
- 14:23One of the part is that she was able to play, you know, brave
- 14:27and and terrified at the same time.
- 14:31I like the fact that the story of Barry let's calling in John
- 14:34Purway after he's already decided like yeah this famous
- 14:37good and John Purway walks behind Barry let's and gives the
- 14:40thumbs up like yes, let's have a.
- 14:43So he cast his shadow, I think John Purway.
- 14:46Well, yeah. Well, we've had a whole Sarah
- 14:48Jane that was was sacked because she didn't get on with John
- 14:52Purway. So was any of that filmed?
- 14:54I've. Never know quite how far it got.
- 15:00I'd be so interested, of course. Somewhere, yeah.
- 15:03I'll see. Look, look.
- 15:04And they're together. They're brilliant, yeah.
- 15:08Which is in her second costume of the story.
- 15:11And he's going, Oh, sympathetic. Resonance, yes, I'm.
- 15:16Paying attention, Tommy went down in the cellar and Do.
- 15:19You remember that? Analogous to the laser.
- 15:21Dinosaurs where he's trying to get on with making his dinosaur
- 15:24machine and then everyone comes in and he's like, oh.
- 15:29Yeah and this is, well this is very like that scene where she's
- 15:31been investigating the the people in who who've invented
- 15:35time travel and and the doctor said Oh well there's also Sky
- 15:38but no, he hasn't been born yet and yeah.
- 15:42I think they're great. Can we be most repelled all
- 15:43week? Grabs our ear and goes in you
- 15:45go. Oh, look at her hat.
- 15:51This should look cute. Oh, right.
- 15:57It's Pat Gorman. Sam the Pat Gorman Klaxon.
- 16:00Now, listen. To me, Fraser, I want to hear
- 16:02the story from the very beginning.
- 16:04Come. On oh, here we go, the chase
- 16:06begins Here, Oh, Bessie, they're.
- 16:09Given Pat Gorman lines they have and a close up.
- 16:14Excuse me. In the word, this is Peter
- 16:16Miles. Pat Gorman is not an actor, Sir.
- 16:21It's. It is just that sort of end of
- 16:23term feeling of give everyone a go and but.
- 16:27I do love the feeling that unit is now just the Brigadier
- 16:30Sergeant Benson and Pat Gorman to Polish all the cars and
- 16:34that's it. There is no one else around.
- 16:37But I do like. I think there's an end of turn
- 16:39feel well, we miss. Monster.
- 16:40As well. And yeah, there's a very
- 16:42different feel to this from the time.
- 16:44What did we miss, Fraser? We missed.
- 16:46The mention of. The Yeah of.
- 16:51Political officer when the doctor was in the trance until
- 16:54of Sullivan. Woke him up.
- 16:55The Brig was on the phone to the MO.
- 16:57A chap called Sullivan. Never heard of him.
- 17:00He's going to be very important. Who also missed a mention of the
- 17:05doctor's old teacher. Yes.
- 17:08Who he's seen in the crystal. All these things are going to be
- 17:11coming along soon, you know. This is lovely.
- 17:14This this scene is is wonderful. It's just so intimate with the
- 17:18two of them crouched down, looking at the crystal.
- 17:20It's it's really lovely and they're.
- 17:22Basically doing that thing we do in TV now, it's like, oh, you
- 17:25didn't watch that story, right? Well, we're going to catch you
- 17:27up on what happened in the class.
- 17:31There aren't any giant spiders on metabolis.
- 17:34Free metabolis. Oh God, look how cheap.
- 17:38That corridor looks. That's dreadful.
- 17:41That's a dreadful flat, isn't it?
- 17:43Yeah, it serves. Its function though.
- 17:48Paul. Benton.
- 17:49Well, he's always getting knocked out, isn't he?
- 17:52That's what you want to see, that's.
- 17:54Great. Though.
- 17:55Look at them talking with him coming in in the background.
- 17:57Yeah, and. Just in the background and
- 17:59looking through the window and. There's some more good Duddy
- 18:02Simpson music here, as he's sort of creep.
- 18:09Who's playing the Queen spider here?
- 18:11The. Queen Spider I think is Kismet
- 18:18Delgado is. This the queen spider though.
- 18:22Yes, no. Or is it queen?
- 18:25Because no. Because the Queen possesses
- 18:26Sarah, doesn't she? And she is on them the.
- 18:29Queen still on Metabolis 3 and the strip box is trying to tell
- 18:33me this is the Queen's. That's what I was.
- 18:34Going to say I've got the subtitles on, yes.
- 18:36I've got the same and it's not the Queen.
- 18:38The Queen is Queen who possesses Sarah.
- 18:40This is the other one. This is.
- 18:42The other one that wants to arrival.
- 18:44Of the Queen, yes. There's a.
- 18:46Perfectly lounging in his chair there.
- 18:48On the back. This is this is the oh, he's
- 18:51Benton again. He's got thumped again.
- 18:53He'll be up. He'll be fine.
- 18:55Come on. I made a trap thankless role for
- 18:59him. That's it, then.
- 19:01That's enough plot for one episode we do now.
- 19:05I think we should go running around now.
- 19:07You know, I've just got a genre copter out here for me.
- 19:11I've got the Hoover bill for you, Psy, right?
- 19:13I'm fine. I'll take that.
- 19:15You're going on hovercrafts well here.
- 19:17Comes Dead Eye Lethbridge Stewart like a Stormtrooper.
- 19:23Blasting away as usual. Yeah, you know that.
- 19:25Sort of comment that Lethbridge Stewart got a bit dense as the
- 19:29Pertwee era went on. I do think they started to turn
- 19:32a corner with the green death and with invasion of dinosaurs
- 19:35as well. I think they they they were they
- 19:37were trying to sort of characterize him a bit smart
- 19:39again or smarter. The nadir is the three doctors.
- 19:44I think where he's just he's not.
- 19:46That's the idiot. Look at that car.
- 19:50Look at perk. Way look at that car.
- 19:54Perk. Way standing up, I said.
- 19:55Zoom in. Benton.
- 19:58'S driving says Every time I drove Bessie, when it wasn't
- 20:01driven by Perk way, every perk we was telling them off for not
- 20:03driving it, right? It was a slight look of fear on
- 20:06his face. There.
- 20:07Yeah, Courtney was behind the wheel.
- 20:10I love that. Benton's driving Bessie until
- 20:12the Brexit move over, Benton are driving.
- 20:15Why? Look at that date and it looked
- 20:17dreary. It does I.
- 20:18Think this has. Been a shot on different days
- 20:20because the weather's changing from scene to scene.
- 20:23Oh my God, look, really obviously.
- 20:25See Bessie with Her Hood Up 3. Different vehicles already in
- 20:29about two minutes. There we.
- 20:36Look here with that helicopter. Clearly.
- 20:41Jon Pertwee in that helicopter. Absolutely, these are.
- 20:44Fabulous shots though from another car's point of view of
- 20:47Bessie Gansk down those country roads, yes.
- 20:50Yep, that's great direction. They're.
- 20:54Clearly not driving there though us the Brigadier of Benson.
- 21:00I'm not sure Pertwee's off the ground either, no.
- 21:03But it's enough to convince you, and that's all you need was it.
- 21:08Trenton who? There was a Fury from the Deep
- 21:10where you know, he was supposed to be shot in the helicopter.
- 21:14He was like, Nope. Nope, they're not going off the
- 21:16ground. Nope.
- 21:17In the wheel and spin it if you want, but you know, Nope,
- 21:19remember. That Have you guys seen The
- 21:21Avengers? Yeah.
- 21:23Do you? Remember that one?
- 21:24Where they're all in cars and they're going around?
- 21:26Oh. Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 21:27Dead man's treasure. I'm.
- 21:29Hearing that, I love that one. Comedy policeman I.
- 21:39So I've got iron. Man in it.
- 21:40That's. It or was it?
- 21:43Was it like Thor or Hulk? No, Fraser, no.
- 21:49Is he being clever? He's.
- 21:50Trying to be funny. OK, it won't.
- 21:53That bad lip balloon. Sorry.
- 21:56One does not try to be as funny as me or you.
- 21:59Know you, absolutely. Could speed some of this.
- 22:02Up and have the Benny Hill theme tune, couldn't you?
- 22:05Oh, I'm sure that's been done. Oh, here goes chubby oats.
- 22:12Yep. Apparently he has sort of a line
- 22:15in blue humour. I don't approve.
- 22:27I'm glad that got Oh dear, Oh dear.
- 22:34Even though I'm not that DRY, you imagine.
- 22:36Someone kind like taking their dog for a walk and saying all
- 22:39this shit. Fraser's there, You know, to
- 22:43walk in the dog to see the cows, and there's a hovercraft and the
- 22:46Homerville zooming boss. Oh dear.
- 22:52That. That is what's it called?
- 22:53A gyrocopter. Yep.
- 22:55Yep, it's. Very comical, isn't it?
- 22:57Turned off. To the right Brigadier.
- 22:59Again, he's turned off to the right.
- 23:04Have you been in any of these vehicles, guys?
- 23:07I've. Been in Bessie.
- 23:08Oh, back in the day. The Yeah, yeah, actual Bessie.
- 23:14Where? Is the home mobile now the home?
- 23:17Mobile was actually out last weekend.
- 23:20Someone brought it down to an event.
- 23:22Did you go? In it, no.
- 23:23No, I I I wasn't at the event, but that I saw pictures of it on
- 23:27Twitter the other day. I've been in a police car.
- 23:31Does that count? I've been in well, I've been in
- 23:33a police. Car razor.
- 23:36I love how Lupton can just hide in a ditch and run up to the
- 23:40gyrocopter. I mean, that's what good two
- 23:43and. They're literally. 200 yards
- 23:45about a meter away from them put.
- 23:50His Put his helmet on, get everybody, do all his checks,
- 23:52and then before anyone actually realizes that he's nicking, he's
- 23:56necking me. Plain be.
- 23:58Close. Well, that's.
- 23:59It well, he's well, he's he's getting away now because there's
- 24:03nothing else that can fly that's going to catch him, yeah.
- 24:06Of course. Do we have no hint of that
- 24:09invasion of the dinosaurs, though?
- 24:10Did we? That it got fly?
- 24:13Mind you, we've given the special effects.
- 24:15We've got no hint that it can fly.
- 24:18No, no, no. I think you'll find CSO or
- 24:20Chroma Key as it's known in the rest of the world outside of the
- 24:23BBC. It can do anything.
- 24:27Oh, I. Bless you, Brandon says.
- 24:29That every time. Doesn't she?
- 24:31Or CSO as it is. Doctor, we're flying.
- 24:34Well, of course we're flying. Well, why doesn't this work?
- 24:38Is it because it's been keyed in against yellow rather than blue
- 24:42and I? Think it's videotape against
- 24:44film, which never works well anyway.
- 24:47But so how did they get the footage of, like, someone's
- 24:51filming in the air there? Yeah.
- 24:53So, like, I get, I wonder if they filmed something from the
- 24:57gyrocopter while it was up in the air.
- 24:59Attach a camera to it. You've got the right, right
- 25:01area, or else it's stock footage.
- 25:04That's probably about right. The travel is.
- 25:06Right, it's a special effects don't really work.
- 25:08Perk is so cool. Be on the wheel.
- 25:10I'll just believe it anyway, exactly.
- 25:14And if Liz Slayden tells you you're flying, you're definitely
- 25:16flying. Exactly.
- 25:19So yeah, I mean, because I've got the footage of the car was
- 25:21flying, something must have been filming, yeah?
- 25:27Crazy I've got the. Next film Now Something.
- 25:29You could play the you could play the policeman.
- 25:31You've got that proper deadpan voice, you know?
- 25:35I'm just going home. I don't feel well.
- 25:41See, The Chasers got comedy. If nothing else, he's running
- 25:46out of fuel. It has.
- 25:47Got a bit of character too, but think back to Invasion of the
- 25:50Dinosaurs site that we did where the Doctors on the run.
- 25:53Yep. And that chase has got a lot of
- 25:55suspense. I don't think this has got a lot
- 25:56of suspense too. No, no.
- 25:57No, it is like you said, it's a relay race from one vehicle to
- 26:02the next vehicle. Do you know what props to Barry?
- 26:06That's for trying though. I know how he pioneered see it.
- 26:12So it's how we make TV now, you know?
- 26:15Yeah. Just a remarkably more
- 26:18sophisticated way of doing it. Yeah.
- 26:23Oh, I love these shots now as we go down on the bank.
- 26:27Love looked and running around with these like weed jacket and
- 26:31he's jumping on but look. At how we look, he looks like a
- 26:36desperate man and a bit dangerous, absolutely.
- 26:38And he's and he slips over. And I like the fact they keep it
- 26:42in. Yes, it's like hamster, a blunt
- 26:47penknife. You know, all the mistakes go
- 26:48in. Warts and all.
- 26:51It's a nice, it's a nice shot with the with the sort of
- 26:54rotting boat and the bits of words and all of that.
- 26:56It's lovely. And oh, it's Terry Walsh.
- 26:59They're. All here stunts.
- 27:01Coming up, I don't know, is someone going to fall in the
- 27:05water? And this is nice because the guy
- 27:07on the on the hovercraft is the guy who owned it.
- 27:11But he's not an actor, no. No, you could tell.
- 27:17Look out. Oh, no.
- 27:20Terry's in the water. He.
- 27:24Didn't even punch him. We just pushed him in.
- 27:26Mr. Hopkins has been zapped. Oh.
- 27:29No where. Is this this looks like a
- 27:32Christmas show. Ah, OK, the river.
- 27:34Seven, apparently. Oh, it's.
- 27:35Miserable in that water does. But there's some, there's a
- 27:38lovely, a lovely thing that they found some news footage.
- 27:42Fallen in the from the. Recording of this and he's
- 27:44falling in again. Oh.
- 27:46Bless him, poor. Terry Walsh Never.
- 27:50Mind him, he'll be fine. Nikki's of a craft.
- 27:53I think someone's done a super cut of Terry Walsh.
- 27:55And Pat Gorman dying. Oh.
- 27:57I hope so. I hope it's out there.
- 28:01Swim, Terry. Swim after your boat.
- 28:03That's. Right.
- 28:04Because Terry will be doubling properly shortly.
- 28:06So I'm. Not sure, Fraser.
- 28:08You know, I think this might be the single most amount of
- 28:11location work in an episode to this point.
- 28:14You reckon? Yeah.
- 28:16But you should have an. Episode, isn't it?
- 28:18They had. About 5 minutes usually, didn't
- 28:20they? And there's I think.
- 28:22I think The thing is is like all the location is doing one thing,
- 28:26you know, where was you think sometimes it's you're going to
- 28:29spread it out across members a couple of episodes you're going
- 28:31to have. I mean, obviously we've had the
- 28:33train station and like making Sarah Jane in the car and then
- 28:40we've got the house, yeah. But then again, we're not going
- 28:45to get a lot of location filming after this episode at all.
- 28:49They're basically. Using the the budget for the
- 28:51store this. Is it This is.
- 28:53You've got four episodes in the studio after this, so it's kind
- 28:56of like we'll do all of this and we'll Chuck it all this.
- 28:58So that's Mebes. Why it feels like this is the
- 29:00most is because we're we're watching sort of 10 minutes
- 29:04straight of it. I do think attempts are made
- 29:07unsuccessfully to suggest that Metabiglia is free is outside.
- 29:12You know those sequences. Fabulous.
- 29:14Thank you. But do you guys think then
- 29:18perhaps that some of this location work should have been
- 29:21saved for those scenes? No.
- 29:23Because looking at the dreary weather, it would have been
- 29:27awful. Why would you swap Mesabilis
- 29:31free for for a tramp being run over by a hovercraft?
- 29:35Who's the. Tramp against Stuart.
- 29:36Fell Stuart. Fell.
- 29:37They're all in this one, didn't they?
- 29:39They are. There's a question, then, Should
- 29:41this be Pig Bin Josh? Oh.
- 29:44You are. Are we ticking off the era?
- 29:47Yes, that would have been. I think that would have been so
- 29:48good if they just bought that one.
- 29:50What? What?
- 29:52Look at his comedy look to camera.
- 29:55It's very Hannah Barbera, isn't it?
- 30:01Simpson is is going to go for it and giving us some chase music
- 30:04and keeping it moving. You know what?
- 30:08I don't care how it looks so cool.
- 30:11Even though he's soaked to the bone, yeah.
- 30:14What was froughing around him? He's going a hell of a lick.
- 30:20I mean, he owned the show, didn't he?
- 30:23Oh, he. Did is was he?
- 30:24He remade Doctor Who in his own image and there are a generation
- 30:32of fans, and I know it it sounds difficult to believe now, that
- 30:35didn't take to Tom Baker because he wasn't Jon Pertwee.
- 30:39Yeah. Fans didn't like the new Doctor
- 30:41huts. I know.
- 30:45Where's Nocton gone? I think Tarasik should have
- 30:49covered that with a line of like, you know he couldn't
- 30:52before because dot dot dot. No, no.
- 30:56Sometimes you don't think of things that you can do until the
- 31:01moment is there, do you? You know, we all had moments
- 31:04where you think, well, if I'd thought of that earlier, then I
- 31:06could have done this, couldn't I?
- 31:07Bet I. Think it's just, I mean,
- 31:11obviously, yes, he could have done that.
- 31:12It's like you could have flown the the ring into Mount Doom on
- 31:16the back of Eagles, but it's not, you know, the best way of
- 31:20doing it. It's kind of like you were your
- 31:22last resort, isn't it? Yeah, because what happens is
- 31:25obviously in episode 3 has to have a lie down because of the
- 31:28knackered. Now we're in the spider and
- 31:29knackered because they've had the, you know, magically
- 31:31teleport from. I think the best thing would
- 31:34have been it was escape, but then they would have all their
- 31:36magic spider powers still. But now we need this little
- 31:38snooze. Well then I started with a
- 31:42question. I'll show end with a question.
- 31:46Is that the best episode of Planet of the Spiders?
- 31:51I I think the six might might edge it, yeah.
- 31:56I think it's the best episode with the chase in it.
- 32:00Yeah, I think you're. Right, so I think 6 is it's not
- 32:07a. Bad episode though.
- 32:09No. Jesus Christ, no.
- 32:10I mean, if all Doctor episodes were that fun, we'd be in good
- 32:13shape, won't we? But is there a reason why we
- 32:19pushed away from this, you know, in Tom Baker's first season?
- 32:25Yes, because it's been done. Everything has been done with
- 32:29UNIT and an Earthbound set of stories.
- 32:33They've done five years of this and you've got to change and
- 32:36you've got to keep moving and you've got to keep moving on.
- 32:41We all say it's a show that it never stays the same.
- 32:44And that's what makes the show something that we come back to,
- 32:47because each era does something different.
- 32:51So you know, it's like season five.
- 32:54Most of it is bases under siege. So what you do the next year,
- 32:57something different. You open the stories out a bit
- 32:59and go into space and you do do this or so.
- 33:03So here they haven't done a lot of space opera.
- 33:07Well, they've done a bit of space opera, but they haven't
- 33:09done lots of stories set on alien planets in a row and
- 33:12things like that and old monsters.
- 33:14So we're going to do that big time and then we're going to do
- 33:16some something horrific and and things like that.
- 33:20You've got to keep moving. I think the reason is also
- 33:24because this isn't just Jon Perkley leaving.
- 33:28This is Terrence Dixon Baroulettes leaving.
- 33:30And you know, it's and not just Tom Big coming in, It's Philip
- 33:35Pinchcliff and Bob Holmes coming in.
- 33:36And for all that the the star of the show has changed behind the
- 33:40scenes. We now have two guys who want to
- 33:42tell different stories. Yeah.
- 33:44But they do go back to the unit. Well, three times.
- 33:47Terror, the Zygons Android invasion, and Caesar Doom.
- 33:51But you don't get, you know, long protracted.
- 33:54The only time I think you get protracted action sequences on
- 33:57location like this is when Barry Letts comes back for the Android
- 34:00invasion. In those Are those really Unit
- 34:04stories though? Because.
- 34:07I'd say Terry Zygons is. Definitely is Terry Zygons.
- 34:11Definitely is, but let's not forget that is technically a
- 34:13season 12 story which is handed over from that's.
- 34:17Very true. Let's and.
- 34:19Dicks. You know the start off with the
- 34:20unit story and that would have ended with one if if the
- 34:23production had went that way. You know Android Invasion is is
- 34:29a bit of a it is, it's Unity, but it's not actually Unity.
- 34:33You look at Seeds of Death and that is also it's not got unit
- 34:38and it's got the Air Force. So there's no actual unit in
- 34:41that the way it's no. It's got Major Beresford, hasn't
- 34:46it? And yes, sorry.
- 34:47But it does feel. Sort of like a perfunctory end.
- 34:50That's it for you. Yeah.
- 34:51Yeah. But that wasn't the original end
- 34:54of Season 13. The original end was a big unit
- 34:57story, The Hand of Fear. Yeah, of course.
- 35:00And they were trying to get Courtney back as well, weren't
- 35:02they? Yeah.
- 35:03And they they considered killing him off.
- 35:06Oh, sure mighty well fellas, that was a fun chase through the
- 35:13English. It was.
- 35:15But now we are going. Well, it's shocking, but we're
- 35:18going to go back to the plot. What?
- 35:20No, there's there's no plot going on.
- 35:22It's not. Otherwise, if there is a plot
- 35:25going on, I'll probably go on for a couple of episodes yet,
- 35:27well, actually goes anywhere. Well, let's see what it's got to
- 35:30offer, shall we? OK, OK.
- 35:34OK. Boom.
- 35:35I'll come there.
