Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Kate Fisher: US Correspondent on the fatal shooting of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Kate for sure. Our US correspondent is with us this morning.
- 0:03Speaker 1: The CEO of United Healthcare has been shot did in Manhattan.
- 0:07Speaker 1: The NYPD currently holding a prisser. They say this is
- 0:10Speaker 1: not a random a shooting. This appears to be a
- 0:14Speaker 1: targeted a tech Kate, what's the lightest.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Yeah, as you say, Lisa about to give a news
- 0:21Speaker 2: conference in New York to get more details because at
- 0:23Speaker 2: the moment things are pretty sketchy. We know that Brian
- 0:27Speaker 2: Thompson was shot dead on the street outside the Hilton
- 0:32Speaker 2: Hotel in Midtown, Manhattan just before seven am local time.
- 0:37Speaker 2: He was making his way to the hotel for an
- 0:39Speaker 2: investor's meeting. We're told everybody there is in shock, as
- 0:44Speaker 2: our staff of the hotel. As you say, police think
- 0:48Speaker 2: this was targeted and not something random to the Mayor
- 0:52Speaker 2: of New York, Eric Adams, has tried to reassure New
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yorkers that it is safe to be out on the streets,
- 0:57Speaker 2: but clearly a shocking occurrence. Kind of seems to be
- 1:01Speaker 2: some sort of execution. In the early hours of this morning.
- 1:05Speaker 2: He was wearing a hooded black garment and escaped on
- 1:08Speaker 2: a bike heading down an alleyway. Towards Central Park. But
- 1:12Speaker 2: other than that, we still don't know what the motive
- 1:14Speaker 2: could be. The police press conference is just starting as
- 1:18Speaker 2: we speak.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I could say they've got a fine number up
- 1:20Speaker 1: for tips, so they're obviously wanting people to know, Dobbin
- 1:23Speaker 1: what happened and a ten thousand dollars reward, right, Okay,
- 1:27Speaker 1: sounds quite serious. Let's got to Trump and has picked
- 1:31Speaker 1: for Secretary of Defense. There are allegations of drinking and
- 1:34Speaker 1: treatment of women here. Is this going to be another
- 1:36Speaker 1: one that falls by the wayside.
- 1:39Speaker 2: It's certainly looking very tense at the moment as to
- 1:42Speaker 2: whether he can hang on to this. This is Pete Heski,
- 1:44Speaker 2: the former Fox News presenter, but there are many allegations
- 1:48Speaker 2: about him being drunk on the job and about potential
- 1:53Speaker 2: allegations of misconduct towards women, to the extent that Donald
- 1:58Speaker 2: Trump has apparently start to look for a potential replacement,
- 2:02Speaker 2: including his former rival for the presidential nomination, that is
- 2:06Speaker 2: Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida. They have had not
- 2:10Speaker 2: the closest of relationships, given that they were fighting each
- 2:13Speaker 2: other for the presidential nomination. So it has surprised some
- 2:15Speaker 2: people that Donald Trump is looking to Ron DeSantis, but
- 2:18Speaker 2: at the moment, Pete Heskiff is still the nominee. He's
- 2:22Speaker 2: on Capitol Hill today trying to persuade some of those
- 2:25Speaker 2: senators who are unsure about him that he is the
- 2:28Speaker 2: man for the job. And his mother has even been
- 2:31Speaker 2: on TV today trying to say that he is a
- 2:34Speaker 2: great guy and not to worry, even though back in
- 2:37Speaker 2: twenty eighteen she apparently emailed him and told him he
- 2:41Speaker 2: was an abuser of women. Takes that back and has apologized.
- 2:45Speaker 2: But you know it's not looking great, no.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And we'll never good if you need to call your
- 2:50Speaker 1: mum up to come out and do a prisser for you. Kate,
- 2:52Speaker 1: Thank you for that, Kate, for sure you is correspondent.
