- 0:53Speaker 1: asked some of my dearest friends and family to hit
- 0:58Speaker 1: me with some questions.
- 1:00Speaker 2: That's right. It's a little.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Bit different than your standard listener questions episode because these
- 1:06Speaker 1: are some of the people that know me best. I'm
- 1:09Speaker 1: talking to my parents, I'm talking my oldest friends, I'm
- 1:13Speaker 1: talking friends and colleagues in business.
- 1:15Speaker 2: You name it.
- 1:17Speaker 1: And so we're getting into it today. We're getting a
- 1:19Speaker 1: little deep, and I hope that this is a little
- 1:23Speaker 1: experiment that you enjoy. In today's episode, I'm answering questions
- 1:29Speaker 1: about upcoming projects, perhaps my favorite pizza. I'm talking about
- 1:34Speaker 1: travel tips for stand on top of your health and
- 1:38Speaker 1: fitness goals on myself and recording this out in Los
- 1:42Speaker 1: Angeles as I hold this microphone in Santa Monica. A
- 1:46Speaker 1: lot of good stuff on deck this week. And then
- 1:48Speaker 1: beyond that, let's see what else are we talking about
- 1:51Speaker 1: here favorite or in my apartment? The habits that make
- 1:55Speaker 1: me me? And some best practice advice on how to
- 1:59Speaker 1: get out of a rut, and so much more. Make sure,
- 2:04Speaker 1: if you're not yet doing so, you're following along with
- 2:06Speaker 1: Hurdle over on social It's at Hurdle podcast. I am
- 2:09Speaker 1: over at Emily Avadi and without any further delay, let's
- 2:13Speaker 1: get to it. Let's get it's a hurdling.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Hey m it is t Drew And my question for
- 2:28Speaker 3: you is what are your habits? Can be two, can
- 2:35Speaker 3: be three, can be four, can be ten, But what
- 2:39Speaker 3: are the habits that you have currently that have allowed
- 2:42Speaker 3: you to be who you are and get to where
- 2:47Speaker 3: you currently are? And also, I guess these will be
- 2:51Speaker 3: the same habits that will allow you to get to
- 2:53Speaker 3: where you're trying to go. That's my question.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Habits. I love some habits.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And you know it's interesting in this question, Teader, you
- 3:01Speaker 1: didn't ask me what the habits were for. So I'm
- 3:06Speaker 1: going to say that my habits in my morning routine
- 3:11Speaker 1: are the habits that set me up for success in
- 3:14Speaker 1: my day because they help me take care of me.
- 3:16Speaker 1: They fill out my cup, and while my cup is full,
- 3:19Speaker 1: I feel like I am better capable of being in
- 3:22Speaker 1: service and of service to the people that I care about,
- 3:25Speaker 1: showing up in my business, showing up in my friendships
- 3:28Speaker 1: and my relationships, and so on and so forth. So
- 3:30Speaker 1: I would say the most foundational habits in my life
- 3:34Speaker 1: are these four things. First of all, good sleep without
- 3:40Speaker 1: good sleep, like your best day starts the night before,
- 3:43Speaker 1: and for me, sleep and getting adequate sleep has been
- 3:46Speaker 1: a priority over the last few years. So I would
- 3:49Speaker 1: say my number one habit is protecting my sleep. It
- 3:53Speaker 1: is very rare that I am awake during the week
- 3:56Speaker 1: past ten BM, and to be honest, same goes most weekends.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Protecting my sleep crucial habit. The next important habit that
- 4:05Speaker 1: I have is my journaling breathwork combo. First thing in
- 4:08Speaker 1: the morning. I've talked about it here on the show before.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I do about three to five minutes of breathwork each
- 4:14Speaker 1: and every day, right after I grab my espresso from
- 4:18Speaker 1: the kitchen counter, I sit down on my couch. I
- 4:21Speaker 1: use Open, and of course, if you've been listening to
- 4:24Speaker 1: the show for a while, you know I have a
- 4:25Speaker 1: code for you. If you go on over to with
- 4:27Speaker 1: open dot com slash hurdle, you can get thirty days free.
- 4:31Speaker 1: But I do one of opens classes for between three
- 4:34Speaker 1: and five minutes. Then I reach to the table in
- 4:37Speaker 1: front of me, I grab my journal. I write for
- 4:39Speaker 1: one page whatever comes out, whatever I'm feeling that I
- 4:42Speaker 1: want to talk about, reflecting from the past twenty four hours.
- 4:45Speaker 1: And then at the end of that page, I write
- 4:47Speaker 1: down one thing that I am grateful for, a highlight
- 4:50Speaker 1: from the past day. That breathwork and journaling practice, it's
- 4:54Speaker 1: a cornerstone. It helps keep me grounded. It helps me
- 4:57Speaker 1: kind of get my thoughts out in the morning. It
- 4:58Speaker 1: helps me come back into my body first thing of
- 5:01Speaker 1: the day, and that for me, is of the utmost importance.
- 5:05Speaker 1: The third habit crucial for me. You know where I'm going.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I feel it move in my body. I start every
- 5:12Speaker 1: day by moving my body in some way. And that
- 5:15Speaker 1: doesn't always mean that there's some intense crazy workout on deck.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Right my workout routine from day to day varies. Right now,
- 5:21Speaker 1: I'm strength training about four days a week. I've got
- 5:23Speaker 1: running in there interval style. Because of this plantro fasciitis,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I'm nursing about two days a week. And then I
- 5:31Speaker 1: would say I've got one day of yoga and maybe
- 5:34Speaker 1: one day of pilates and some walking mixed in there.
- 5:36Speaker 1: It sounds like a lot, but I'm spacing it out.
- 5:38Speaker 1: I'm giving my body the attention, the love that it
- 5:41Speaker 1: needs and deserves so that I can show up.
- 5:43Speaker 2: And be my best self. And then the.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Fourth habit that is crucial to me being my best
- 5:51Speaker 1: me is making it a habit to say no to
- 5:57Speaker 1: the things that don't serve me. I know it's a
- 5:58Speaker 1: little bit different than the first three, but it has
- 6:03Speaker 1: become a cornerstone of how I better show up for myself.
- 6:07Speaker 1: If I am not feeling something, I am like a
- 6:11Speaker 1: f yes for the you know, trying to keep this
- 6:16Speaker 1: PC here. I'm an f yes kind of person, which
- 6:19Speaker 1: means that if something feels a little bit off, I'm
- 6:22Speaker 1: gonna be honest with myself that it just doesn't feel
- 6:26Speaker 1: like it's serving me. It's not something that I can
- 6:28Speaker 1: get into. So oftentimes owning my know. The habit of
- 6:33Speaker 1: owning my no is me saying yes to myself. Owning
- 6:37Speaker 1: my no is me saying yes to myself. So maybe
- 6:41Speaker 1: that's a dinner that I don't really feel like going to,
- 6:44Speaker 1: or an event invite that I can no longer make happen.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Maybe it's a work opportunity that doesn't really feel like
- 6:52Speaker 1: something I want to be accountable for right now. Whatever
- 6:55Speaker 1: it may be, I do an honest inner, audit, and
- 7:00Speaker 1: opportunities come my way, and by owning my know, I
- 7:04Speaker 1: then in turn say yes to the things that ultimately
- 7:07Speaker 1: really serve me. So good sleep, my morning breathwork, journaling combo,
- 7:13Speaker 1: my movement practice, and owning my no for habits that
- 7:17Speaker 1: have dramatically impacted my life, and I believe, to the
- 7:20Speaker 1: point of this question, are going to help me get
- 7:23Speaker 1: to where I want to go. If you could change
- 7:27Speaker 1: one thing right now, what would it be. If I
- 7:31Speaker 1: could change one thing right in this very moment, it
- 7:34Speaker 1: would probably be this gloomy weather here in LA. This
- 7:39Speaker 1: is my mom asking this question.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I love her.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I guess this isn't really realistic, but I feel as
- 7:43Speaker 1: though there are so many things I want to be
- 7:47Speaker 1: doing simultaneously at this moment in time and life doesn't
- 7:53Speaker 1: allow for that. Right It's not physically possible to be
- 7:56Speaker 1: in two places at once. So I really want to
- 8:00Speaker 1: be able to spend more time and have more time.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I feel like I'm making a lot of choices lately
- 8:07Speaker 1: that feel very difficult, and it is reminding me of
- 8:10Speaker 1: the value of time and that that is something that
- 8:14Speaker 1: we don't get back. So if I could change one
- 8:17Speaker 1: thing right now, it would be gosh to make there
- 8:21Speaker 1: thirty to thirty four hours in the day and for
- 8:24Speaker 1: some in some miraculous way, I wouldn't get tired by
- 8:30Speaker 1: oh my god, eight pm every night. I don't know
- 8:33Speaker 1: if that's actually you know where you were going with
- 8:35Speaker 1: this one, Mama, but that's where I'm going.
- 8:38Speaker 2: To go with it.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Good morning, m I hope you made it safely to
- 8:41Speaker 4: Los Angeles. Like you, I travel a lot for work
- 8:44Speaker 4: and I find it hard to stay on track with
- 8:47Speaker 4: my health and fitness goals. If you could give me
- 8:50Speaker 4: maybe a couple tips on how to make the best
- 8:52Speaker 4: use of hotel gyms and what to do when you're
- 8:55Speaker 4: on the road so that you don't feel guilty when
- 8:57Speaker 4: you get home.
- 8:58Speaker 1: If I'm traveling for work, if I look at my
- 9:01Speaker 1: week wherever I am the exact same way I try
- 9:05Speaker 1: to look at my week when I'm home. I have
- 9:07Speaker 1: been using the Future app. I've talked about it on
- 9:09Speaker 1: the show before. If you are interested in getting some
- 9:13Speaker 1: free personal training, you can head on over to try
- 9:15Speaker 1: at Future dot com slash hurdle a link it in
- 9:18Speaker 1: the show notes.
- 9:19Speaker 2: But I know.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Wherever I'm going what will be available to me, whether
- 9:23Speaker 1: a hotel has a gym or a friend's apartment building
- 9:26Speaker 1: has a gym if I'm visiting a friend, and then
- 9:28Speaker 1: I can communicate with my trainer via the Future app
- 9:32Speaker 1: to know what is within my wheelhouse to keep myself
- 9:37Speaker 1: moving as I'm out of my normal routine.
- 9:39Speaker 2: So that's really helpful.
- 9:40Speaker 1: But if you don't have a trainer in your pocket,
- 9:44Speaker 1: with the help of Future, I then will do an
- 9:47Speaker 1: audit of the area that I'm going to and see
- 9:50Speaker 1: what studios are available to me, if there's a gym
- 9:53Speaker 1: that I might be able to use. I also love
- 9:55Speaker 1: to explore new places on foot and by running and walking,
- 10:00Speaker 1: so I plan out my week of workouts wherever I
- 10:03Speaker 1: may be the exact same way I do at home,
- 10:06Speaker 1: and for me, that is how I know again that
- 10:09Speaker 1: I'm going to be able to show up in my
- 10:11Speaker 1: best way possible, handling whatever is on deck, whatever the
- 10:15Speaker 1: work week is throwing my way. And then also I
- 10:18Speaker 1: make a really big effort to upkeep the habits that
- 10:21Speaker 1: I know make me feel like my best self when
- 10:24Speaker 1: I'm on the road. So that means drinking ag one,
- 10:26Speaker 1: it means hydrating often, it means journaling and reading and
- 10:29Speaker 1: my breath works. So really just giving it an honest
- 10:32Speaker 1: try to be happy and content with myself and my
- 10:37Speaker 1: health even when I'm away from home.
- 10:41Speaker 2: How do you get out of feeling stuck or in
- 10:45Speaker 2: a rut?
- 10:46Speaker 1: So when I'm stuck in a rut, my first thing
- 10:50Speaker 1: that I do is I move my body. And I
- 10:53Speaker 1: know that that's not always something that I can do
- 10:56Speaker 1: right away. Sometimes the rut hits and I feel like
- 10:58Speaker 1: I'm sitting at my desk staring into space, and it's
- 11:02Speaker 1: eleven am, and there's stuff to get done and so
- 11:05Speaker 1: on and so forth. So if I can't move my
- 11:07Speaker 1: body in the moment that I feel like this frustration
- 11:10Speaker 1: is hitting, I will at least have a plan for
- 11:12Speaker 1: the next time that I'm going to do that, knowing
- 11:15Speaker 1: that sweat and moving and getting my heart rate up
- 11:18Speaker 1: is my go to one of my favorite ways to
- 11:22Speaker 1: take care of me. And then the next thing that
- 11:25Speaker 1: I do when I'm stuck in a rut is that
- 11:27Speaker 1: I make sure that I talk to someone about it,
- 11:30Speaker 1: whether it's my life coach or a good friend. I
- 11:33Speaker 1: know from my experience that keeping my feelings all sorts
- 11:37Speaker 1: of bottled up does not serve me in order to
- 11:40Speaker 1: move forward, in order to process, in order to get through,
- 11:45Speaker 1: it's important that you open up right. It's important that
- 11:49Speaker 1: you give your feelings some air, some space to get
- 11:56Speaker 1: to the other side of that hurdle. So first and foremost,
- 11:59Speaker 1: I try to move my body, and next and also
- 12:02Speaker 1: just as important, I talk about how I'm feeling with
- 12:05Speaker 1: someone that I love, someone that I know cares about me.
- 12:08Speaker 1: And those are my two muss for when I'm just
- 12:12Speaker 1: feeling black.
- 12:14Speaker 5: Hi, Emily, it's Bob from Connecticut, longtime listener Love the Pod. Oh,
- 12:20Speaker 5: by the way, I'm also known as Emily's dad. Hey,
- 12:23Speaker 5: here's my listener question, Emily, when are you going to
- 12:26Speaker 5: come up and make pizza with us?
- 12:27Speaker 2: Oh? My god? Is my dad? Like the biggest nerd
- 12:30Speaker 2: or what love you Dad? You're the best?
- 12:34Speaker 1: I would say, what am I getting back to Connecticut
- 12:36Speaker 1: for pizza? I'm literally scrolling through my phone right now.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I'll go from at April. If that's cool, we can
- 12:45Speaker 1: confirm a date. But I will say this, I got
- 12:48Speaker 1: my dad and his girlfriend Kathy a pizza oven a
- 12:52Speaker 1: few years ago for Christmas, and that oonie. It's an
- 12:57Speaker 1: Unie pizza oven. I love making my Doroit style pizza,
- 13:01Speaker 1: but a fresh Unie pizza on the deck Chef's kiss.
- 13:06Speaker 1: What's your favorite item or art piece in your home
- 13:10Speaker 1: and why. My favorite art in the apartment is probably
- 13:16Speaker 1: a piece that I bought from what is now New
- 13:18Speaker 1: York or nowhere, but was once called no Lita Knwlita.
- 13:25Speaker 1: And it's just a print that says Everything's going to
- 13:28Speaker 1: be all right. And I bought it at a time
- 13:31Speaker 1: in my life that it didn't feel like everything was
- 13:35Speaker 1: going to be all right. And whenever I look at it,
- 13:37Speaker 1: I'm just reminded of my own strength and the importance
- 13:42Speaker 1: of being vulnerable and everywhere I have come from and
- 13:45Speaker 1: everywhere that I am going.
- 13:47Speaker 2: What's the worst date you've ever been on?
- 13:50Speaker 1: So this question is from my I call her my
- 13:53Speaker 1: final roommate. She's the last girl I lived with before
- 13:58Speaker 1: I started living on my own. We lived together literally
- 14:01Speaker 1: right until she got married, and then I got my
- 14:04Speaker 1: first studio apartment on the Upper East Side. So this
- 14:08Speaker 1: is funny because I'm actually not sure if she knows
- 14:10Speaker 1: about this. It happened after we stopped living together. I
- 14:13Speaker 1: went on a date, a lunch date. Like I'd been
- 14:16Speaker 1: traveling a lot and I lived uptown and this guy
- 14:21Speaker 1: really wanted to take me to lunch, and I didn't
- 14:24Speaker 1: have a lot of time.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I had a flight, I believe that evening.
- 14:27Speaker 1: I forget where I was going, but I he was
- 14:29Speaker 1: persistent and I was like, okay, let's do it. And
- 14:31Speaker 1: so I was just meeting him for tacos. It wasn't
- 14:34Speaker 1: anything crazy. I'm walking to the taco place, it's literally
- 14:38Speaker 1: like three walks from my apartment, and I get a
- 14:41Speaker 1: text and it's like, what kind of tacos do you want?
- 14:44Speaker 1: And I was like, well, I'll be there in a
- 14:45Speaker 1: couple of minutes, like i'll see you soon and we
- 14:46Speaker 1: can order. I walk into the taco restaurant. I'm not
- 14:50Speaker 1: even exaggerating the guy's already sitting there eating tacos. Like
- 14:57Speaker 1: he's already eating and I'm like, Okay, this is kind
- 15:01Speaker 1: of bizarre.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Maybe he was just really hungry.
- 15:03Speaker 1: He gives me his AMX and he says, feel free
- 15:06Speaker 1: to go get whatever you want, and I'm just like,
- 15:09Speaker 1: this is bizarre. I tell him I don't need the MX,
- 15:13Speaker 1: I'll get my own tacos. So I go, I buy
- 15:15Speaker 1: the tacos, I go to sit down. I'm already feeling
- 15:17Speaker 1: like super uneasy about this. I'm sitting there with him,
- 15:21Speaker 1: and he starts going on a rant about how people
- 15:25Speaker 1: that I can't even make this up, that are bigger
- 15:29Speaker 1: shouldn't try running. He must have no concept of like
- 15:33Speaker 1: who he's talking to. I am just sitting there like
- 15:36Speaker 1: in disbelief that not only did this man show up
- 15:39Speaker 1: to our date and start our date without me, but
- 15:42Speaker 1: then he's like speaking nonsense about people who want to
- 15:48Speaker 1: move their body. And then I think at one point
- 15:51Speaker 1: he said something about making fun of a Jewish holiday,
- 15:55Speaker 1: and at.
- 15:55Speaker 2: That point I was just out of there.
- 15:57Speaker 1: So I believe what I did was I like looked
- 16:02Speaker 1: down and I realized that the fountain soda I was
- 16:05Speaker 1: drinking the dike coke was empty, and I looked at
- 16:08Speaker 1: him and I was like, listen, I'm going to refill
- 16:10Speaker 1: this diet coke. And then I think I'm going to
- 16:12Speaker 1: leave because this just it's not a match for me.
- 16:16Speaker 1: And I forget what else he said in that moment,
- 16:19Speaker 1: but I did just that.
- 16:20Speaker 2: I left the date.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I think I had only been there, I'm not even
- 16:23Speaker 1: exaggerating for maybe ten minutes. And I remember him texting
- 16:27Speaker 1: me a few days later and asking me if he
- 16:29Speaker 1: could take me out again.
- 16:31Speaker 2: And I.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Don't even remember what I said or if I responded,
- 16:35Speaker 1: to be honest with you, but I would say that,
- 16:37Speaker 1: without a doubt, that is the worst date that I
- 16:41Speaker 1: have ever been on.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Ever.
- 16:43Speaker 6: Every day I pull a card from the self reflection
- 16:47Speaker 6: deck for we're not really strangers, and today's question is
- 16:52Speaker 6: a good one, so I'm going to ask it to
- 16:54Speaker 6: you as well, which is what have I outgrown recently?
- 17:00Speaker 6: And what am I growing into?
- 17:04Speaker 1: Love this question, my friend Sean, She's so insightful. I
- 17:08Speaker 1: would say, what have I outgrown recently? Recently? I, because
- 17:15Speaker 1: of the situation with my foot, have outgrown doing copious
- 17:19Speaker 1: amounts of cardio. And I would say that in this moment,
- 17:24Speaker 1: it feels really right for my body. It's not that
- 17:28Speaker 1: I don't love running, and I'm looking forward to being
- 17:30Speaker 1: able to do it like I used to, But this
- 17:34Speaker 1: moment in time has really offered me some perspective, and
- 17:38Speaker 1: for that, I'm really grateful. I really believe that as
- 17:42Speaker 1: annoying and troublesome and so many things that this injury
- 17:45Speaker 1: has been, it has happened for me and it's given
- 17:48Speaker 1: me some time to do a lot of reflection, and
- 17:50Speaker 1: so for that, I am really grateful. And what am
- 17:54Speaker 1: I growing into. I would say I am growing into
- 18:03Speaker 1: an era of loving energy. You know that sounds like
- 18:08Speaker 1: a little I don't know flufy if that's the right
- 18:11Speaker 1: word here. I just really am standing firm in this.
- 18:18Speaker 1: We get what we put out into the world space.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I know that energy attracts like energy, and I am
- 18:25Speaker 1: just in this place where I want goodness in my
- 18:29Speaker 1: life wholeheartedly, and I want love in my life, and
- 18:33Speaker 1: so I believe that this is the era, this is
- 18:35Speaker 1: the time that I'm stepping into that. And I am
- 18:39Speaker 1: conscious of the way I'm speaking to myself, and I
- 18:42Speaker 1: am conscious of whom who I am surrounding myself with.
- 18:46Speaker 1: And that for me is what I'm growing into. I'm
- 18:49Speaker 1: growing into this era of love and it feels really good.
- 18:54Speaker 4: Hi Emily, I have a very hard hitting question for you,
- 18:58Speaker 4: and that.
- 18:59Speaker 6: Is what is your favorite pen that you use for journaling?
- 19:04Speaker 2: No shade.
- 19:05Speaker 1: I get this question a lot in my DMS because
- 19:08Speaker 1: I have I think like three of the exact same pen.
- 19:11Speaker 1: It's a Penel pen. It's a Penel pen. I will
- 19:15Speaker 1: link it in the show notes. I don't even remember.
- 19:18Speaker 1: I think I saw it on someone else's like Instagram
- 19:23Speaker 1: years ago, and so I bought it. But it's called
- 19:26Speaker 1: the Penel Energel alloy gel pen. And the good news
- 19:32Speaker 1: is that you buy this gold pen and then you
- 19:34Speaker 1: can just buy the replacement ink, so you don't need
- 19:38Speaker 1: to keep buying new pens. So it is the Pentel
- 19:41Speaker 1: Energel pen, and I'll link it in the show notes.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Am I lame that I have a favorite pet? I digress,
- 19:48Speaker 1: you know what. That's fine with me. I think that's
- 19:52Speaker 1: it for now. Oh my god, that was kind of fun. Also,
- 19:55Speaker 1: I'm always up to answer your questions, So if you
- 19:58Speaker 1: have a listener question, I am all ear the link
- 20:01Speaker 1: to leave me a voice messages in the show notes,
- 20:03Speaker 1: and if for some reason that is wonky for you
- 20:06Speaker 1: it happens, feel free always to send a voice note
- 20:09Speaker 1: to voice a memo over to us at Hello at
- 20:12Speaker 1: hurdle dot us. Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next
