- 0:08Speaker 1: What's up everybody, Maddi glab here. It's been a super
- 0:11Speaker 1: busy week at One Bill's Drive as the Bills announced
- 0:14Speaker 1: their new head coach, Joe Brady, So we had to
- 0:18Speaker 1: call an emergency podcast and I had to invite someone
- 0:21Speaker 1: who knows Joe very well. Bill's wide receiver, Khalil Shakir Khalil,
- 0:25Speaker 1: thanks for hopping on the pod with us.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Yeah, of course, thanks for having me.
- 0:29Speaker 1: All right. I know you're not in Buffalo. Where are you.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I'm in California soaking up the sun.
- 0:36Speaker 1: We're buried under like three and a half feet of
- 0:38Speaker 1: snow and you are soaking up the sun. You made
- 0:40Speaker 1: the right decision.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yeah. I checked my home cameras every single day and
- 0:46Speaker 2: just look at the snow from a distance.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah, you just chuckle and say ha ha. They have
- 0:51Speaker 1: to deal with it. I don't How long do you
- 0:56Speaker 1: take to relax and reset before you get back into
- 0:59Speaker 1: your training mode.
- 1:03Speaker 2: It kind of depends. I kind of gauge it off
- 1:05Speaker 2: of how my body feels whenever season is over. Uh So,
- 1:09Speaker 2: I think I usually around two to three weeks of
- 1:14Speaker 2: just relaxing, kicking my feet up, hanging out with family
- 1:18Speaker 2: and enjoying time with them and stuff like that, and
- 1:20Speaker 2: then I'll get back into lifting and all that not
- 1:23Speaker 2: too long after that.
- 1:24Speaker 1: So and hanging out with a new daughter. You had
- 1:27Speaker 1: a baby born in the middle of the season. How
- 1:29Speaker 1: does it feel to finally be a dad?
- 1:31Speaker 2: Khalil, Yeah, it's awesome. It's fun just seeing like the
- 1:35Speaker 2: little things that that little new things that she does
- 1:38Speaker 2: every single day, as well as family meeting her as well,
- 1:43Speaker 2: and just it's been fun. It's been really fun. She's
- 1:46Speaker 2: been great. She's starting to smile and like I said,
- 1:50Speaker 2: just do little things. I just my heart, my heart aches,
- 1:53Speaker 2: you know, it's it's great.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I love that. Well, we're glad you get time with
- 1:57Speaker 1: family and friends and time to relax before getting back
- 2:00Speaker 1: into it. I know everybody's kind of different. How are
- 2:02Speaker 1: you feeling after the season? Where's the body at? Do
- 2:05Speaker 1: you feel like you you finished on a good note
- 2:07Speaker 1: and feel like you can just take a couple of
- 2:09Speaker 1: weeks and get back into it.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Uh, yeah, I mean we kind of got a little
- 2:13Speaker 2: beat up. Yeah, still kind of in the process of
- 2:16Speaker 2: just just get my legs back under myself. As my
- 2:19Speaker 2: dog and he starts squeaking to it. Sorry, about that.
- 2:23Speaker 2: But yeah, it always just like I said, it just
- 2:28Speaker 2: depends on the year. The body. This year, you know,
- 2:32Speaker 2: kind of took took some some hits and stuff like that,
- 2:34Speaker 2: and we're we're just now, what do we two weeks out?
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yeah about that, it's crazy two weeks out. It feels
- 2:42Speaker 1: like three months and it feels like two days at
- 2:44Speaker 1: the same time.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly. So we're just not starting to feel
- 2:49Speaker 2: like our normal selves again. So we're getting there.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Okay, I'm glad you're starting to feel like your normal self.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Looking back on the season, col a tough finish, but
- 2:57Speaker 1: still a lot to be grateful for. I mean, you
- 3:00Speaker 1: guys want a playoff game. You finish as the fourth
- 3:02Speaker 1: best offense, averaging over twenty eight points per game. What
- 3:06Speaker 1: are you most proud of when you look back on
- 3:07Speaker 1: the twenty twenty five season.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say just our grit, Like the way
- 3:14Speaker 2: we were able to just keep our head down and
- 3:18Speaker 2: just finish games. You know, there's a lot of times
- 3:20Speaker 2: we're playing from behind, and obviously, you know, we wish
- 3:23Speaker 2: we would have got out to a faster start, but
- 3:25Speaker 2: our ability to finish the games and come back from
- 3:29Speaker 2: you know, you know, two touchdown, two three touchdowns, whatever
- 3:32Speaker 2: it is, and win those games. Those moments in the
- 3:36Speaker 2: locker rooms after are something that I'll never forget. So
- 3:39Speaker 2: just how we were able to just just grind things out.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And unfortunate ending to the season and that you don't
- 3:45Speaker 1: make it to the super Bowl. But also you part
- 3:47Speaker 1: ways with former head coach Sean McDermott. I know he
- 3:50Speaker 1: brought a lot to Buffalo in terms of building an
- 3:53Speaker 1: incredible culture here and I know a lot of that
- 3:55Speaker 1: will stick around the Bills. Do introduce a new head
- 3:58Speaker 1: coach who's a familiar face to you because because he's
- 4:00Speaker 1: been your offensive coordinator the last two and a half years,
- 4:03Speaker 1: you know him through meetings, you know who through practices.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Who is Joe Brady to you? Khalil?
- 4:12Speaker 2: Joe Brady to me? Is uh the man who helped
- 4:16Speaker 2: my career take off when when he took over, I
- 4:20Speaker 2: think his very first game calling uh as as though
- 4:24Speaker 2: see it was my first one of the yard game,
- 4:26Speaker 2: I believe so, man, he's just somebody who the moment
- 4:29Speaker 2: from the moment he took over and started calling plays
- 4:32Speaker 2: and stuff like that, he just kind of put his
- 4:35Speaker 2: belief in me and Uh, I think I went from
- 4:38Speaker 2: one week to where I felt like I was like
- 4:40Speaker 2: kind of just you know, maybe run blocking Tim toon me,
- 4:43Speaker 2: hey be ready to roll next week and wait what
- 4:45Speaker 2: you know, like and had to lock in real quick
- 4:47Speaker 2: and get things going. And it's funny. It's you know,
- 4:50Speaker 2: I've always believed that I've had the ability to do
- 4:53Speaker 2: you know, good things in the league, but he's the
- 4:55Speaker 2: man that helped me, you know, truly believe them put
- 4:57Speaker 2: it into action. So I really ship with him a
- 5:00Speaker 2: special and I'm just I'm super happy for him and
- 5:02Speaker 2: this family.
- 5:04Speaker 1: What exactly about your game do you think Joe Brady elevated?
- 5:11Speaker 2: I think, uh, confidence. I think he just instilled a
- 5:15Speaker 2: whole bunch of confidence within me to go out there
- 5:17Speaker 2: and you know, make these plays and break tackles and
- 5:20Speaker 2: do all these crazy things. I think for him just
- 5:24Speaker 2: telling me every single week, uh, you know, just to
- 5:29Speaker 2: be at my best and to I remember I asked
- 5:31Speaker 2: him before playoffs, without getting too personalized, before playoffs, I said, hey,
- 5:36Speaker 2: what do you need from me moving forward? And he
- 5:39Speaker 2: told me to get out your head and just be yourself.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And I think that's just just just so special coming
- 5:45Speaker 2: from a from a coach because as a player, we
- 5:48Speaker 2: go through so many things mentally throughout the whole year,
- 5:51Speaker 2: and it can be a mental grind and for a
- 5:53Speaker 2: coach to have that belief in you and to look
- 5:56Speaker 2: in your face to say, just be you all we
- 5:58Speaker 2: need and he says all the time, He's like, all
- 6:00Speaker 2: we need Koalose Skar to be is to be Kalose Sker,
- 6:02Speaker 2: and that's special to me.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Joe Brady says that in press conferences all the time too,
- 6:07Speaker 1: when he's asked about any player and what that player
- 6:09Speaker 1: needs to do, his response is quickly that player just
- 6:13Speaker 1: needs to be himself and that is good enough for us.
- 6:16Speaker 1: That player, whoever he's speaking about, has enough pressure on himself.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I don't need to put any more pressure on him.
- 6:22Speaker 1: And Kalil, based on that response that you had, it
- 6:25Speaker 1: seems like, you know, it's a vulnerable place to be
- 6:28Speaker 1: to go up to an offensive coordinator and say, hey,
- 6:31Speaker 1: what do you need from me in this situation in
- 6:34Speaker 1: this game, And to feel comfortable enough to go up
- 6:36Speaker 1: to Brady and do that speaks to the relationship that
- 6:39Speaker 1: you have with him. I know he's all about player relationships.
- 6:43Speaker 1: How has that really helped you grow in your belief
- 6:47Speaker 1: of him.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I mean, I think it just elevates not only you know,
- 6:53Speaker 2: just me as a person, but my role in the
- 6:55Speaker 2: offense as well him. You know, keeping an open door
- 6:59Speaker 2: and it's one thing for a coach to say their
- 7:01Speaker 2: doors open, for players to actually go up there and
- 7:05Speaker 2: talk to them about things speaks volumes to not only
- 7:08Speaker 2: that the coach that he is, but the man that
- 7:09Speaker 2: he is as well. So I think you know, from
- 7:12Speaker 2: the moment he took over, he just kind of not
- 7:15Speaker 2: just me through everybody was just I think it's just
- 7:18Speaker 2: his vibe. Just it's just the way that he is,
- 7:20Speaker 2: the way that he is on the field, the energy
- 7:21Speaker 2: that he brings, you know, the way he leaves our meetings.
- 7:26Speaker 2: You can just tell he's a guy that wants what's
- 7:28Speaker 2: best for everybody, of course on the field, but off
- 7:31Speaker 2: the field as well. When the coach cares about your
- 7:33Speaker 2: family too and how things are going at home, it
- 7:37Speaker 2: makes you want to just just grind that much harder
- 7:39Speaker 2: for that person. So man overall, I mean, Joe, Joe's awesome.
- 7:43Speaker 2: He's great.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Joe also brings the juice. He has a lot of energy,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and it's easy to see that on the field and
- 7:49Speaker 1: end games. When is Joe Brady at his highest?
- 7:55Speaker 2: It's hard to pick a day. I mean, the dude
- 7:58Speaker 2: has unlimited juice. It's crazy practice starts, he's going game days,
- 8:04Speaker 2: he's fired up. It's it's kind of hard to sit
- 8:07Speaker 2: here and say when when is he had his best one.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I feel like every day he's at his best no
- 8:11Speaker 2: matter what we're doing, and it's it's tough for somebody
- 8:15Speaker 2: to keep that same energy twenty four to seven throughout
- 8:18Speaker 2: the whole season. He does that, and it's actually special.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Today is Joe Brady's introductory press conference he'll sign his contract.
- 8:27Speaker 1: He walked in the building this morning at four thirty am.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Are you surprised? No?
- 8:33Speaker 2: He also had shorts and a T shirt on. From
- 8:35Speaker 2: what I've seen, that's Joe. I mean, I think it's
- 8:39Speaker 2: actually I can't pinpoint a time where I saw him
- 8:41Speaker 2: wearing pants this year walking into a game or practices
- 8:46Speaker 2: or whatever. He for sure always has shorts on, and
- 8:51Speaker 2: this morning threw in his twist with the just wearing
- 8:53Speaker 2: the T shirt as well. So I mean, I wouldn't
- 8:56Speaker 2: be surprised if he did his press confidence in that.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I know, you gotta believe he's gonna be in a
- 9:01Speaker 1: suit because it's it's the environment for that. But do
- 9:04Speaker 1: you think Joe Brady could rock like a short pant suit,
- 9:07Speaker 1: you know, where you have the top and then you
- 9:10Speaker 1: have the bottom and the bottom are just some like
- 9:12Speaker 1: nice pant trousers.
- 9:15Speaker 2: That'd be a cool introduction he had the full suit on,
- 9:17Speaker 2: then rip the things off in the shorts, rip the
- 9:20Speaker 2: arms off. Yeah, I think he definitely could rock that
- 9:23Speaker 2: for sure, but I would I would have. I think
- 9:25Speaker 2: he's gonna pull out the suit and pull off a
- 9:28Speaker 2: fresh new look.
- 9:28Speaker 1: So yeah, it makes sense. You spoke about how Joe
- 9:33Speaker 1: Brady has energy in every situation, in every scenario, regardless
- 9:37Speaker 1: if it's meetings, a practice, or a game. What is
- 9:40Speaker 1: Joe Brady's demeanor during meetings?
- 9:45Speaker 2: Cool, collected and it really doesn't matter, you know, win
- 9:49Speaker 2: or loss, Joe Joe's the same. And I think that's
- 9:54Speaker 2: that speaks to us players. You know, he's never coming
- 9:56Speaker 2: in there screaming, yelling at us. You know, we're all
- 10:00Speaker 2: players that you know at the level where we realize
- 10:03Speaker 2: when stuff needs to change and stuff needs to get fixed.
- 10:05Speaker 2: And Joe for sure make sure that he points out
- 10:07Speaker 2: the little things that we need to start doing better.
- 10:09Speaker 2: But he's never coming in there and holler, and you know,
- 10:12Speaker 2: he keeps a calm, cool, collected vibe and you know,
- 10:17Speaker 2: just kind of points out what we know, what we
- 10:20Speaker 2: need to do, especially even in halftimes we need to
- 10:22Speaker 2: make adjustments. I actually don't think I've ever heard him
- 10:25Speaker 2: yell wow, So he kind of just, uh, he points
- 10:30Speaker 2: out what we need to fix. And I think it's
- 10:32Speaker 2: a respect thing to where he lets us know and
- 10:36Speaker 2: we know what we got to do, and it's kind
- 10:37Speaker 2: of just like a head nod and we know it
- 10:39Speaker 2: needs to be fixed.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Why is the calm, cool, collected vibe and not yelling,
- 10:45Speaker 1: not jumping down your throat well received by the team.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know. I just feel like that's
- 10:56Speaker 2: just the guy that he is and we feed off
- 10:58Speaker 2: of that. Well, it's kind of hard to playing. Yeah,
- 11:02Speaker 2: maybe sometimes you know players are are you know, need
- 11:05Speaker 2: to be yelled at sometimes, But I think the guys
- 11:08Speaker 2: that we have on this team, like I said, it's
- 11:10Speaker 2: more of a respect things where he comes in calm,
- 11:13Speaker 2: so that's what needs to be done, and we give
- 11:14Speaker 2: him ahead nod and we go fix it. I think
- 11:17Speaker 2: that's I've said it a thousand times, but it comes
- 11:20Speaker 2: down to just respect, and we have a lot of
- 11:22Speaker 2: respect for him as a man and as a coach.
- 11:24Speaker 1: I know you guys also have a lot of respect
- 11:27Speaker 1: for Joe Brady because of the open door policy that
- 11:30Speaker 1: you spoke about, the ability to go to Joe if
- 11:33Speaker 1: you feel passionate about a certain play and to know
- 11:36Speaker 1: that Joe Brady is going to listen to what you
- 11:38Speaker 1: have to say and possibly implement it in the offense
- 11:41Speaker 1: at some point in the season. Why is that unique
- 11:44Speaker 1: for you as a player.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think we all have our ideas
- 11:50Speaker 2: and play calling and stuff that we may think would work,
- 11:54Speaker 2: or you know, stuff that needs to be fixed, stuff
- 11:58Speaker 2: that we're doing great. I think any time there is
- 12:02Speaker 2: you know, that open dialogue and everybody feels like they
- 12:04Speaker 2: can go up there talk to him, it only helps.
- 12:07Speaker 2: It only helps. I don't think it can it can
- 12:09Speaker 2: hurt by any means. And Joe's gonna shoot it real
- 12:11Speaker 2: with you. You know, if he agrees, he'll agree with you,
- 12:14Speaker 2: and if he if he doesn't, you know, talk things out.
- 12:17Speaker 2: And like I said, that comes in when he took
- 12:18Speaker 2: over just his his vibe and the way he talked
- 12:21Speaker 2: to us that led to a player's film, like they
- 12:24Speaker 2: can go up there and talk to him. And like
- 12:26Speaker 2: I said before, it's huge when we feel like we
- 12:29Speaker 2: can go out there and voice our opinions and have
- 12:31Speaker 2: a comfortable conversation without you know, there being any yelling
- 12:35Speaker 2: or arguing or anything like that. So I said, Joe
- 12:38Speaker 2: does a great job of managing that.
- 12:40Speaker 1: All. You know Joe Brady more than most do. You
- 12:43Speaker 1: know the culture in Buffalo. You know your quarterback really well.
- 12:47Speaker 1: And Josh Allen, what makes Joe Brady the right next
- 12:52Speaker 1: fit for what you have going on right now with
- 12:54Speaker 1: the Bills.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I've said a lot a lot of great things about him,
- 13:00Speaker 2: and he's just a dog. I think his mentality matches
- 13:04Speaker 2: with US players. He wants to win so so bad.
- 13:10Speaker 2: He does everything the right way. He makes sure that
- 13:13Speaker 2: we're all comfortable with, you know, the game plan going
- 13:16Speaker 2: into that week, and like I said, the respecting he
- 13:20Speaker 2: just he has a lot of respect for US players.
- 13:22Speaker 2: And then it's obviously we have a lot of respect
- 13:24Speaker 2: for him. But he's a guy that's just gonna put
- 13:28Speaker 2: his head down and coach to the best of his ability,
- 13:30Speaker 2: and then after every practice, after every game, you're never
- 13:34Speaker 2: gonna feel like Joe didn't do nothing. He's going to
- 13:36Speaker 2: make sure that he does everything that he can to
- 13:38Speaker 2: make sure we win games, and everything that he can
- 13:41Speaker 2: to make sure that US players are taken care of
- 13:43Speaker 2: healthy going into games. Man, I can go on and on.
- 13:47Speaker 2: I love the dude and family, man, and I'm excited
- 13:52Speaker 2: to see what's in store for the future.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Under Joe Brady. Buffalo's offense since twenty twenty four has
- 13:58Speaker 1: averaged about thirty points per game. So where does the
- 14:03Speaker 1: offense grow from here?
- 14:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think obviously with that, we just
- 14:12Speaker 2: work on cleaning up some of the little details that
- 14:15Speaker 2: we need to fix. But overall, I mean, I think
- 14:19Speaker 2: it's the if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I think we need to obviously do a few things better.
- 14:25Speaker 2: And I think that just comes down to, like our
- 14:27Speaker 2: fundamentals and techniques, and you know, when when you get
- 14:31Speaker 2: tired and as the season goes on longer, you have
- 14:34Speaker 2: to really lean on those fundamentals and technique and Joe's
- 14:37Speaker 2: going to do a great job to make sure that
- 14:39Speaker 2: we stay on that throughout the whole season.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Now that Joe Brady is the head coach, he's over
- 14:44Speaker 1: the offense, the defense, special teams. Like I've said multiple times,
- 14:49Speaker 1: you know him better than so many people in this building.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Why will he be a good fit for the defense
- 14:54Speaker 1: as well?
- 14:57Speaker 2: Man, the juice that he brings to the offense, and
- 14:59Speaker 2: the vibe and the calm, cool, collected vibe that he
- 15:01Speaker 2: brings to us every single days now just going to
- 15:03Speaker 2: be spread out amongst the whole team, you know. So
- 15:07Speaker 2: it's going to fall over onto the defense and fall
- 15:09Speaker 2: over into special teams. And you know, I think having
- 15:13Speaker 2: that vibe throughout a whole building, throughout all three phases,
- 15:18Speaker 2: it's gonna be hard to come to work and not
- 15:20Speaker 2: have a smile on your face. I Mean, I know
- 15:22Speaker 2: a lot of the defensive guys know him as well,
- 15:25Speaker 2: but to now have him kind of overlooking all that
- 15:27Speaker 2: they're gonna truly feel the impact that he has.
- 15:31Speaker 1: I love that. Did you know he started his coaching
- 15:33Speaker 1: career as a linebackers coach at William and Mary.
- 15:36Speaker 2: I didn't know he was a linebacker's coach, but I
- 15:38Speaker 2: knew he's at WIM and Mary. We had a lot
- 15:40Speaker 2: of women and Mary, So.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, so he's got he's got a little defensive background.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Even though he played wide receiver in college, guys started
- 15:49Speaker 1: out on the defensive side of the ball. So you
- 15:51Speaker 1: know he's been he's been there a little bit. Joe
- 15:54Speaker 1: Brady walked into the building this morning in shorts. It
- 15:57Speaker 1: is snowing outside, is colder than cold. What's your take
- 16:03Speaker 1: about how he's chronically inshorts.
- 16:08Speaker 2: I'll tell you what it's. It's not for the cameras
- 16:10Speaker 2: or anything. Because he does it every single day. That's
- 16:13Speaker 2: that's Joe. Now. I don't have the exact answer as
- 16:16Speaker 2: to why he does it.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Yeah, has anybody ever asked him like, okay, why why
- 16:23Speaker 1: why do you do this every day?
- 16:26Speaker 2: I've never thought the question him. I just maybe it's
- 16:28Speaker 2: it's his theme. So I just let it be and
- 16:33Speaker 2: it is what it is.
- 16:35Speaker 1: What it's what makes Joe Joe. Yeah, definitely, Okay, I
- 16:39Speaker 1: like it. Okay, last question, you got any good stories
- 16:43Speaker 1: about Joe Brady from any meetings, from practices, any funny
- 16:47Speaker 1: jokes they could share with a class Klill.
- 16:52Speaker 2: I don't. I'm trying to think here.
- 16:57Speaker 1: That speaks to his personality, maybe how he's calm, cool,
- 17:01Speaker 1: collected a little bit funny.
- 17:04Speaker 2: No, I mean, I don't know if it's it would
