Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Good morning, this is Brenda, and I'm back with another horror movie review.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Today's review is going to be on April Fool's Day from 1986, directed by Fred Walton, who also directed I Saw What You Did and When a Stranger Calls and When a Stranger Calls Back with Carol Kane.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: It has a really good cast that seems to work well together, but two of the cast members seem to really stand out to me.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: We have Deborah Foreman, she plays Muffy and Buffy, but she was also in Valley Girl, and then we have Thomas F.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Wilson, who is better known as Biff in the Back to the Future movie.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: As always, the spoilers are coming.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: We have a group of college students that are all going to stay at Muffy's family's estate, which has a huge mansion on it, and it the property has to be accessed by boat, making them isolated from the mainland.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: It has some elements of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, and Agatha Christie's even mentioned in the movie.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: At the very beginning of the movie, we see a child getting a jack in a box for a birthday present.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: So this child grows up liking to play pranks.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: One of the first ones played is when they're all on the boat going to the island.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: He gets crushed between the dock and the boat and has to be taken to the hospital.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Once they arrive inside the mansion, they see little dolls in there, and that plays upon the Agatha Christie story, where I believe in that story it's little China figures.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And as people die off, they start to disappear.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: In this movie, the dolls are found dressed like the people that are there at the mansion as they start to die off one by one.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Since it is April Fool's Day, we have old school pranks in abundance.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: We have whoopee cushions, dribble glasses, collapsible chair legs, exploding cigars, um, doorknobs come off.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: There is one scene where somebody turns on a light switch, it turns on a different light, and they keep going back and forth.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: A bathroom sink faucet was turned to splash someone in the face.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: As they start to turn in for the night, they start finding weird things left in their rooms.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: One has newspaper clippings about people being killed.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: One girl finds ankle restraints, another finds a dominatrix mask.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: We have a death that night in the boathouse, and the next day there's a couple making out in there and they see the body floating through the floorboards.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Muffy is found in the kitchen looking rough.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: She's cooking and her hair's a mess, and she's saying that she forgot to get dressed.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: The night before she was all put together, she was dressed cute, her makeup was done, her hair was done, so this just seemed completely out of character for her.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Kit finds a picture with two little girls in it, and later finds on the basement wall that it has been marked like parents do to mark heights for Muffy and Buffy.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: So it's starting to click that Muffy and Buffy are twins.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Kit and Rob are trying to escape by boat and they find a letter that states one of the St.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: John twins is an escape mental patient and had been institutionalized for the last three years.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: When it finally comes to a head, Kit and Rob are the only two that weren't in on the joke.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: They find out everyone is still alive and Muffy is about to inherit this place, but only if it can carry itself, so she's trying to turn it into a murder mystery weekend resort.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: And I would pay to go there.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: So we ended up with a horror movie where nobody actually dies.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: So let's go ahead and rate this bitch.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Am I gonna give this movie a wine glass for being eerie?
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Nope.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: But I am gonna give the environment a wine glass.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: I love movies where people are cut off from the rest of the world.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: I feel like I can't even give this movie a wine glass on the evil scale, since once you know what is really happening and nobody dies, you know, everything's okay.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: So that leaves us with the empathy part.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: There's no animals, no children, nothing there.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: So even while I'm sitting there watching this drinking my wine, there was nothing to make me feel anything.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: I am gonna give it two wine glasses for being entertaining.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: You know I love me an 80s movie.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: So I'm really only giving this movie three wine glasses.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: I'll probably only watch this movie again if someone really wants to watch it with me.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: They'd have to say, hey Brenda, I've never seen April Fool's Day.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Let's share a bottle of wine.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: I've sat through worse movies for some wine.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: People are starting to write in and suggest movies for me.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: I do prefer 80s movies, but I'll go outside of that box.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: If there's something obscure out there that you think I've never heard of, let me know.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: My email is bsstudios at myyahoo.com.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: I also have a YouTube channel, Brenda's Horror Movie Reviews.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: You can always message me there or on Facebook, and I'm starting to post little videos of me pulling what the next movie will be.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: The next movie is going to be The Stepfather from 1987.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Also, I am dying to know who is listening from Mankato, Minnesota.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: I haven't thought about that city since Little House on the Prairie the first time around.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: I would love to start giving shout outs to whoever is crazy enough to listen to this.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: So reach out to BS Studios at myyahoo.com.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Until next time.
