- 0:38Speaker 1: Birds become a member today.
- 0:50Speaker 2: All Right, saw just a quicky I've thought about this too,
- 0:56Speaker 2: but a lot of people ask me, so I want
- 0:58Speaker 2: to know what you think of it.
- 1:02Speaker 3: We added an extra lineman.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Sometimes they go double tight end.
- 1:08Speaker 2: To to help the running game to h to match
- 1:13Speaker 2: up with the heavy box. Wor's your philosophy as far
- 1:18Speaker 2: as thinking this is, well, why don't they just spread
- 1:21Speaker 2: it out, go for wide and then make it a
- 1:25Speaker 2: little easier for Barkley to get running lanes because it's
- 1:30Speaker 2: going to be less people in the box. Obviously, it's
- 1:33Speaker 2: not as simple as that, because.
- 1:37Speaker 3: You know, if everybody would do it if that was
- 1:40Speaker 3: that easy.
- 1:40Speaker 5: Right, The bottom line is, if if it was that simple,
- 1:44Speaker 5: then everybody with a good back would just.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Spread it out. You know.
- 1:46Speaker 5: It's like people sometimes say to me, well, if a
- 1:49Speaker 5: play works, why don't they just run it over and
- 1:51Speaker 5: over and over again. Obviously it's not that simple, you know,
- 1:55Speaker 5: And you know some teams do that on occasion, but
- 2:01Speaker 5: obviously over time teams don't feel that the best way
- 2:05Speaker 5: to run the football in the National Football League College
- 2:07Speaker 5: is different is to just spread everybody out and hand
- 2:12Speaker 5: the ball off.
- 2:13Speaker 3: You know.
- 2:13Speaker 5: So if they felt that way, you know, more teams
- 2:17Speaker 5: would do it as a foundation of their run game.
- 2:21Speaker 5: So you know they don't. You know, I think there's
- 2:26Speaker 5: a sense that, and we've talked about this in your
- 2:31Speaker 5: run game, even if there's eight in the box, even
- 2:33Speaker 5: if there's nine in the box, depending on the run
- 2:36Speaker 5: game concepts, you don't have to block all those people.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So you know, you're saying you don't have to you
- 2:47Speaker 2: don't have to block the two on the backside.
- 2:51Speaker 5: The run game is really about angles, leverage, aiming points,
- 2:56Speaker 5: you know, all those things. That's what you're trying to create.
- 3:00Speaker 5: Because don't forget, a lot of the guys you're blocking
- 3:04Speaker 5: in the run game are better athletes than your offensive lineman.
- 3:08Speaker 5: Keep that in mind. The biggest mismatch in the NFL,
- 3:11Speaker 5: for the most part, and there's an exception here or there,
- 3:16Speaker 5: are defensive line and linebackers versus offensive linemen. That's a
- 3:21Speaker 5: mismatch in favor of the defense.
- 3:23Speaker 3: So you're looking.
- 3:25Speaker 5: You're looking for angles more than anything else. Angles, aiming points,
- 3:30Speaker 5: you know, those kinds of things, and that's what teams
- 3:33Speaker 5: try to do in the run game.
- 3:35Speaker 6: Greg, I'm gonna ask you a hypothetical question. I'm just
- 3:37Speaker 6: gonna We're gonna put it out there. We're gonna say
- 3:39Speaker 6: Vic Vangiel gives you a call, he tells you, Hey,
- 3:41Speaker 6: Michael Carter, Jay r Alexander, they're all up to speed.
- 3:45Speaker 6: I could play whatever combination I want at corner. I
- 3:48Speaker 6: want you to tell me what I should do based
- 3:50Speaker 6: on tape. Who should be with Quinnan, should Cooper be inside?
- 3:53Speaker 6: Should it be outside? But who do you think would
- 3:55Speaker 6: be the Eagles best three in regards to if they
- 3:58Speaker 6: had a lineup and play to go to the Super
- 4:00Speaker 6: Bowl tomorrow, what's the best combination they could put on
- 4:03Speaker 6: the field From what you've.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Seen on tape. Assuming health of everybody.
- 4:07Speaker 6: Health is everybody's healthy and everybody understands the defense.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Well, I think that's easy.
- 4:12Speaker 5: I think Alexander and Mitchell would be the outside corners
- 4:14Speaker 5: and Cooper Gagen would be the slot corner.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I don't think that's a hard question.
- 4:18Speaker 7: I'm surprised you're you're saying that about Alexander given even
- 4:22Speaker 7: with health, I mean, he was healthy ish enough to play,
- 4:24Speaker 7: and he was a scratch with the Ravens well only
- 4:27Speaker 7: only because they gave up a fourth for Jakian Bennett.
- 4:30Speaker 7: And you're really like tape.
- 4:31Speaker 6: Right, Well, no, Jeff, Jeff, remember they gave up It
- 4:34Speaker 6: was just Thomas Booker for why did I say it fourth?
- 4:37Speaker 6: He was a fourth.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Round break, all right?
- 4:39Speaker 5: I mean Alexander, you know, again, he hasn't played a lot,
- 4:43Speaker 5: so I haven't seen him a lot recently. But there
- 4:46Speaker 5: was a time, Frank, you know, not that long ago,
- 4:48Speaker 5: for a two or three year period where he was
- 4:50Speaker 5: a top five corner in the league. Now, maybe he's
- 4:52Speaker 5: never going to be that. That's something none of us
- 4:55Speaker 5: can know. He hasn't played a lot, but you know,
- 4:58Speaker 5: assuming that because he's he's not old. It's not like
- 5:01Speaker 5: he's thirty five. He's not old, So assuming that he
- 5:04Speaker 5: still has enough of what he was, I don't think
- 5:09Speaker 5: that's a hard question. I mean, you know, he's a
- 5:13Speaker 5: good corner at one time, a very very good corner,
- 5:17Speaker 5: So I think that's Look. I don't think they made
- 5:19Speaker 5: this trade for Jerry Alexander to sit on the bench.
- 5:22Speaker 5: You know, once he's in their mind totally healthy, ready
- 5:26Speaker 5: to go, understands the system enough to be able to
- 5:29Speaker 5: go out there and play. I don't think they did
- 5:31Speaker 5: this to have him sit on the bench.
- 5:34Speaker 3: That makes sense.
- 5:35Speaker 7: This might be a complete overlook on my part. I
- 5:37Speaker 7: just can't get past the fact that the Ravens stunk
- 5:38Speaker 7: on defense for six weeks and didn't play him even
- 5:41Speaker 7: though he was healthy enough to play.
- 5:43Speaker 3: That to me, we know that for sure that he
- 5:46Speaker 3: was healthy enough to play well.
- 5:47Speaker 7: He was inactive, but he wasn't on the injury report
- 5:50Speaker 7: right at least not the last few weeks. He was
- 5:53Speaker 7: a healthy scratch the last few weeks.
- 5:55Speaker 8: So okay, yeah, I wanted to follow up and ask
- 5:59Speaker 8: what we as fans expect to see as far as
- 6:02Speaker 8: the new additions. Will Fangio go back to some of
- 6:05Speaker 8: his more principles he's more known for. Do you think
- 6:07Speaker 8: we'll still see a lot of the lot more man
- 6:09Speaker 8: coverage with some of the pressure schemes that he has
- 6:12Speaker 8: out of that.
- 6:13Speaker 5: That is a really good question, and obviously I don't
- 6:16Speaker 5: I can't give you a definitive answer. I'm not Vic Fangio,
- 6:19Speaker 5: but I think he would like to, you know, he
- 6:21Speaker 5: would like to play a different way, and we'll see.
- 6:25Speaker 3: You know, much of that I think will depend.
- 6:27Speaker 5: On, believe it or not, a lot of the changes
- 6:31Speaker 5: that were made this year starts up front, and I'll
- 6:34Speaker 5: tell you the reason why Milton Williams was a key,
- 6:37Speaker 5: key player to this because he was a power player.
- 6:40Speaker 5: So how all this works is you have to believe
- 6:46Speaker 5: you can stop the run playing from a two shell coverage. Okay,
- 6:50Speaker 5: if you don't believe you can stop the run playing
- 6:53Speaker 5: from a two shell coverage, then what happens is is
- 6:56Speaker 5: you need to bring a safety down and play more
- 6:59Speaker 5: single high. Now, Jomo is not the same kind of
- 7:03Speaker 5: player Milton Williams was. A Jomo is a gap player,
- 7:06Speaker 5: not a power player. So what happens is is he
- 7:09Speaker 5: hits gaps. And also the fact that Carter has been
- 7:13Speaker 5: uneven this year up to this point. So what they
- 7:16Speaker 5: have to do is they have to deal with the
- 7:17Speaker 5: run game and bring a player down. And also keep
- 7:21Speaker 5: in mind, as good as Zach Bonn is, his game
- 7:24Speaker 5: is not built on power. His game is kind of
- 7:26Speaker 5: rangey athleticism. So all this ties together to mean that
- 7:32Speaker 5: it all starts with how they defend the run. And
- 7:34Speaker 5: they need another player down in the box area to
- 7:38Speaker 5: defend the run. So they're playing less two shell coverage.
- 7:43Speaker 5: So we'll see where they go from here. They know
- 7:46Speaker 5: about all this, we'll see what they've done in the
- 7:48Speaker 5: bye week when everybody self scouts in the bye week,
- 7:51Speaker 5: that's the first thing coaches do. They don't really take
- 7:54Speaker 5: time off. You know, good teams usually don't. They might
- 7:57Speaker 5: take a day, but you know they don't. Coaches don't
- 7:59Speaker 5: get you know, five days off or anything like that,
- 8:02Speaker 5: or if they don't have to be in the office.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Believe me, they're working at home. So the first thing
- 8:06Speaker 5: they do until they get to the weekend Sunday or Monday,
- 8:11Speaker 5: is self scout. That's what they do, and then they
- 8:14Speaker 5: figure out what they can do better, what's not working.
- 8:18Speaker 5: But it all starts upfront and it works. It's a
- 8:21Speaker 5: domino effect.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Thank you, gref.
- 8:27Speaker 7: Hey, it's Jeff Mosher. And if you have a family

- 12:07Speaker 4: I wanted to ask about, like the edge rusher rotation,
- 12:12Speaker 4: like it does seem like, you know, with with the
- 12:14Speaker 4: addition now of Jalen, who's a really good, you know rusher,
- 12:22Speaker 4: and they got rid of Patrick Johnson, how do you
- 12:24Speaker 4: think the ideal rotation would work out? Do you think
- 12:27Speaker 4: he would take more of Jlyx's snaps and or Nolan's
- 12:33Speaker 4: and when he would come back?
- 12:36Speaker 5: That's a great question. I mean, Phillips at his best
- 12:38Speaker 5: is their best four to three d n I mean,
- 12:41Speaker 5: you know, again, he's been playing, he's you know, he's
- 12:45Speaker 5: had two major injuries.
- 12:48Speaker 3: I talked to the.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Guys last night, Jeff and Adam about my evaluation of
- 12:52Speaker 5: Phillips when he came out of Miami, and I loved him.
- 12:55Speaker 5: I thought he was the best, the most explosive edge
- 12:59Speaker 5: player in that draft class, who was twenty twenty one.
- 13:01Speaker 5: I thought he had every every box that you can
- 13:04Speaker 5: check for an edge player size, length, athleticism, suddenness, explosiveness, flexibility, power, balance, competitiveness.
- 13:12Speaker 5: He's shown that in the league. Obviously he's on a
- 13:15Speaker 5: bad team now, so it's you know, it's hard to know.
- 13:18Speaker 5: I don't know if he's exactly the same player, but
- 13:22Speaker 5: you know, at his best, he'd be their best four
- 13:25Speaker 5: to three.
- 13:25Speaker 3: D ND right now.
- 13:26Speaker 5: And you know, and again, they tend to play more
- 13:30Speaker 5: sub than than than bass, so they end up playing
- 13:33Speaker 5: four to three or or four two five. I should
- 13:36Speaker 5: say it's Nickel, but you know, he'd be the best guy.
- 13:39Speaker 5: And I guess Nolan Smith. We'd have to wait and
- 13:43Speaker 5: see what kind of you know, rehab and when he's
- 13:46Speaker 5: truly ready to play meaningful snaps and if he can
- 13:49Speaker 5: play at the same level he played over the last
- 13:51Speaker 5: seven eight games a year ago.
- 13:54Speaker 7: All right, guys, thank you very much. We'll do it
- 13:55Speaker 7: again next week.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Guys, all right, we'll talk you next week.
- 13:58Speaker 5: Appreciate it, you, Greg, you, Jeff
