- 0:03Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:20Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan is episode number two D and
- 0:23Speaker 1: nineties six and to Dan the show. Dan and I
- 0:26Speaker 1: are breaking down our final plans, gear lists, and last
- 0:30Speaker 1: minute advice for the first hunts of the two thousand
- 0:33Speaker 1: nineteen hunting season. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast,
- 0:42Speaker 1: brought to you by Onyx. It is me and the
- 0:45Speaker 1: nine Fingered Wonder from down Under. Dan Johnson, good eye
- 0:50Speaker 1: might yeah. I wish you talked this whole episode in
- 0:54Speaker 1: Australian accent. Can you do that? I don't like, I
- 0:57Speaker 1: don't even know like the terminologies down there. I would
- 1:00Speaker 1: just have to say good night. Just used up my
- 1:03Speaker 1: whole inventory of Australian phrases to uh what about BlimE me,
- 1:10Speaker 1: BlimE me? Or is that English? Like he was he
- 1:14Speaker 1: was being a real bugga? I don't know. So, Uh,
- 1:22Speaker 1: what I'm hoping we can talk about today, Dan is
- 1:26Speaker 1: hunting season eve, like everything that happens just before your
- 1:32Speaker 1: first hunt of the year, Because I leave today for
- 1:36Speaker 1: North Dakota and I will start hunting in two days.
- 1:40Speaker 1: My first white tail hunt of the year is in
- 1:41Speaker 1: two days now when this airs, it'll be I'll be
- 1:46Speaker 1: in the middle of that hunt when this actually goes out,
- 1:48Speaker 1: But when we're recording, it's two days before my hunt starts.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And you krim if I'm wrong, But I think your
- 1:54Speaker 1: first hunt of the year will start the day after
- 1:57Speaker 1: this airs. That's right, I'll be driving to Colorado. Perfect,
- 2:03Speaker 1: So I've got the North Dakota white tail hunt. You've
- 2:05Speaker 1: got a Colorado elk hunt. I thought we could walk through,
- 2:10Speaker 1: you know what that week or a couple of days
- 2:12Speaker 1: before you leave for that trip. Looks like all the
- 2:14Speaker 1: things you're trying to get in order, all things you're
- 2:17Speaker 1: thinking about. Excuse me, I'm burping over here from mine.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Have you ever had one of these? Uh bubblis bubbly
- 2:24Speaker 1: like a white claw, kind of like a white claw,
- 2:27Speaker 1: but it's a non alcoholic. It's like lacroix, but it's
- 2:31Speaker 1: probably like those are carbond of water. Very I drink.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I drink coffee before noon, I have like two glasses
- 2:39Speaker 1: of water, and then I switched to hard liquor. I'm
- 2:43Speaker 1: just kidding. In the afternoon, you're not kidding. I don't
- 2:47Speaker 1: think you're kidding all. No, I'm kidding. Like I do
- 2:51Speaker 1: drink a lot of coffee, but then like at noon,
- 2:53Speaker 1: I shut it off and I drink I drink water,
- 2:57Speaker 1: and then at night I'll have a beer or a
- 3:00Speaker 1: nice glass of whiskey. There you go. Since having Everett,
- 3:03Speaker 1: I've started drinking coffee later into the day. Yeah, I'm
- 3:07Speaker 1: now drinking like dinner coffee, which I always i was
- 3:09Speaker 1: a weird thing when old people did that, and now
- 3:11Speaker 1: I totally get it. You gotta stay awake to watch
- 3:14Speaker 1: the six o'clock news, fall asleep after that. Yeah, get
- 3:18Speaker 1: that six o'clock news. So so I want to talk
- 3:21Speaker 1: about what we drink in the evenings. I want to
- 3:24Speaker 1: talk about the gear we're bringing for these trips. I
- 3:27Speaker 1: want to talk about like our final archery prep before
- 3:30Speaker 1: the first time of the year. I want to talk
- 3:32Speaker 1: about the strategies that we each have going into that
- 3:36Speaker 1: first hunt um and kind of lining out our plan,
- 3:39Speaker 1: our contingency plans, Plan A, plan B, plans C. Kind
- 3:42Speaker 1: of line everything up so number one, everyone will kind
- 3:46Speaker 1: of know what we personally are getting into so you
- 3:48Speaker 1: can foul along with that. Story, see what we thought
- 3:50Speaker 1: before the hunt, and then we'll have to go come
- 3:52Speaker 1: back and do a podcast after our hunts and recap
- 3:55Speaker 1: how it ended up going, if we are right or
- 3:57Speaker 1: wrong with our ideas what we learned, um, And then
- 4:00Speaker 1: I'm also thinking probably people can learn some things from
- 4:02Speaker 1: our process as we talked through the things we're trying
- 4:04Speaker 1: to do, the things we're thinking about, the gear we're packing,
- 4:07Speaker 1: that might help other people get set for their first time. Yep,
- 4:11Speaker 1: So you are about one week from your first time.
- 4:14Speaker 1: How you feeling well from a physical standpoint, Man, I've
- 4:18Speaker 1: been I've been killing the trails. Um. You know this
- 4:21Speaker 1: running thing that we started doing right we you started running, Man,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I just I got to a point with running where
- 4:29Speaker 1: it must be probably a little age, probably the wear
- 4:33Speaker 1: and tear in my body throughout the years, where my
- 4:36Speaker 1: cardio was getting a lot better, Um, I my legs
- 4:40Speaker 1: were getting stronger. So let's I'm gonna break down the
- 4:43Speaker 1: three mile runs and how they kind of went. The
- 4:46Speaker 1: first mile is just my muscles warming up, basically, right,
- 4:51Speaker 1: just like getting warm up. The second mile is pretty good,
- 4:55Speaker 1: feeling great, you know, like my cardios in check. I'm
- 4:58Speaker 1: not like huffing and puffing. I don't to stop, but
- 5:01Speaker 1: somewhere around the three miles, like the start of the
- 5:03Speaker 1: three third mile, my my lower back would hurt, my
- 5:08Speaker 1: hip would hurt, and my knees would start to hurt.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And and it wasn't just like let's run it through,
- 5:14Speaker 1: let's try to run it off type of pain. I've
- 5:17Speaker 1: had multiple knee surgeries. Um, I think that has led
- 5:21Speaker 1: to the hip problem with me not being able to
- 5:25Speaker 1: extend my knees the way they need to be. Uh.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Some of it's probably eight years in a office chair,
- 5:32Speaker 1: you know. At compound all those things, it's just not good.
- 5:35Speaker 1: So I've transitioned into a hike routine now to where
- 5:42Speaker 1: I'm putting like sixty pounds on my back and then
- 5:45Speaker 1: I just there's a small little loop at a local
- 5:49Speaker 1: state park, and it's got a good decline in a
- 5:52Speaker 1: really good incline, and I either am just walking in
- 5:55Speaker 1: a big circle a lot for like an hour or
- 5:58Speaker 1: two hours, or I'm just going up and down the hill,
- 6:01Speaker 1: up and down the hill and just trying to get
- 6:03Speaker 1: my legs as burned out as possible. And that's feeling.
- 6:06Speaker 1: You're feeling pretty good after that yeah, I know, like
- 6:08Speaker 1: for some reason adding the weight, it's probably the jarring
- 6:14Speaker 1: of running, right, that impact really the impact. Yeah, so
- 6:18Speaker 1: there's that. Uh. And then basically just the run or
- 6:22Speaker 1: the hike itself is very low impact other than you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: I have the weight on my back, but I'm not
- 6:27Speaker 1: like there's no jarring movement. Uh. And that's uh, that's
- 6:32Speaker 1: easier on my body. And I'm still getting the the
- 6:35Speaker 1: um heart rate increase by walking up that big hill
- 6:38Speaker 1: and I and I try to do it at a
- 6:40Speaker 1: at a good clip nothing. You know, I'm not running,
- 6:43Speaker 1: but I'm trying to do it quick. Yeah. That's that's
- 6:46Speaker 1: still gonna get you well prepped for season, no doubt
- 6:48Speaker 1: about that. You're doing a little bit better than me
- 6:50Speaker 1: because the last two weeks I've seriously lost lost the
- 6:56Speaker 1: momentum on our on our challenge because for the last
- 7:00Speaker 1: two weeks, I've had a camera crew out here filming
- 7:03Speaker 1: all day doing a bunch of work on a farm,
- 7:06Speaker 1: and it's just been like just kind of really hard
- 7:09Speaker 1: to find time to get out in the morning because
- 7:11Speaker 1: we're getting out and filming at like six there or
- 7:13Speaker 1: seven the morning, and I've been getting home at six
- 7:15Speaker 1: and then try to spend a couple of hours of
- 7:16Speaker 1: my son and go to sleep next morning doing more stuff. Um,
- 7:20Speaker 1: so I've only I think the last two weeks I
- 7:22Speaker 1: should have done a minimum of six three mile runs.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I think I only did two or three, so that
- 7:29Speaker 1: that was a bummer. But I'm hoping it's like, excuse, dude.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I know, I know as I as the words leave
- 7:34Speaker 1: my mouth, as the words leave my mouth, I just
- 7:36Speaker 1: shake my head and myself. Everything sounds like an excuse though.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I mean, because the other day, man, I went like,
- 7:43Speaker 1: there's I was on a roll. I shot my boat.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I was shooting my boat every day, and I was,
- 7:47Speaker 1: I was, you know, you know, I was. I was
- 7:50Speaker 1: happy that I was shooting my bow. And I it
- 7:54Speaker 1: was like eight o'clock at night, and then this, uh
- 7:57Speaker 1: or seven thirty or something. Then a storm rolled in
- 7:59Speaker 1: and it got dark real quick, so I couldn't shoot
- 8:02Speaker 1: my bow. And I came up and I was like, oh, well,
- 8:05Speaker 1: I was talking to some Wow, I couldn't shoot my
- 8:08Speaker 1: bow because of this. Well, I could have done it
- 8:10Speaker 1: other times throughout the day, or I could have changed
- 8:13Speaker 1: the schedule, or I could have made it work if
- 8:15Speaker 1: I forced it but I don't know. I just I
- 8:19Speaker 1: didn't And it's just like there's there comes a certain
- 8:23Speaker 1: point at when you're a man that you can't even
- 8:25Speaker 1: say things like that. You shouldn't even say things like
- 8:28Speaker 1: that anymore, because it's it is just an excuse. Just
- 8:32Speaker 1: got on it. Yeah, absolutely So for me, the last
- 8:35Speaker 1: six weeks since I got home from our western trip,
- 8:38Speaker 1: I've been trying to shoot at least every day of
- 8:41Speaker 1: the work week, so at least five times a week
- 8:43Speaker 1: I've been shooting. And I was really good on that
- 8:45Speaker 1: until it just this last week week and have two
- 8:47Speaker 1: weeks and I'd say it's probably every other day during
- 8:49Speaker 1: that period, but still feeling pretty good. But I think
- 8:51Speaker 1: this is a good thing to touch on here, leading
- 8:53Speaker 1: up to your first ton of the year, you know,
- 8:56Speaker 1: really try to ramp up how much I shoot UM
- 8:59Speaker 1: shooting a minimum of I don't know, half hour a
- 9:02Speaker 1: day or something like that, just trying to get reps
- 9:04Speaker 1: in and keep like your muscles feeling good and everything
- 9:07Speaker 1: like that. And then more recently I started switching to
- 9:11Speaker 1: trying to shoot more in a situation similar to what
- 9:15Speaker 1: I would be in UM in natural hunt. So I've
- 9:18Speaker 1: I've got a metal pole in the back of my
- 9:21Speaker 1: barnen kind of like a stripper pole, I guess you
- 9:24Speaker 1: could say. And Um, I hook up my tether for
- 9:26Speaker 1: my saddle on that and I can actually sit in
- 9:28Speaker 1: my saddle from this pole and shoot at my targets
- 9:32Speaker 1: behind the house with that. So I've been shooting from
- 9:34Speaker 1: the saddle to try to prepare for the actual hunt
- 9:36Speaker 1: situation here recently. UM, that's one thing I'm doing here
- 9:40Speaker 1: at the very end, just to try to replicate those
- 9:42Speaker 1: exact scenarios, replicate shooting from some different angles. Um. What else,
- 9:48Speaker 1: if anything, are you doing in the final days? Um,
- 9:51Speaker 1: as far as trying to get zeroed in before the
- 9:53Speaker 1: hunt or how are you doing you kind of alluded
- 9:55Speaker 1: to some stuff from an archery standpoint. Do you have
- 9:57Speaker 1: anything on like what your final Art three situations looking
- 10:01Speaker 1: like as we're seven days out from the first time. Yeah, dude, UM,
- 10:06Speaker 1: this is hard to admit, but I've I've kind of
- 10:10Speaker 1: come across the problem recently and I have no idea
- 10:14Speaker 1: what the hell is going on. The month of July
- 10:17Speaker 1: I was shooting. I bet you there was only six
- 10:19Speaker 1: days in the month of July that I didn't hunt
- 10:22Speaker 1: that I didn't shoot my bow, and that was because
- 10:25Speaker 1: we went on a little vacation. Uh. And then August
- 10:31Speaker 1: it kind of continued. Um. I was shooting at least
- 10:34Speaker 1: four uh four or five days a week up until
- 10:39Speaker 1: a week and a half ago. I'm not sure what
- 10:44Speaker 1: what has happened, but my accuracy. I cannot get my
- 10:49Speaker 1: pen to settle on the target anymore. And I've been
- 10:54Speaker 1: shooting a lot this year. You know, I had I
- 10:57Speaker 1: had that Texas hunt. I had to just I had
- 11:00Speaker 1: to start preparing for the hunting season that much earlier, right,
- 11:05Speaker 1: And I don't, dude, I don't know it it is
- 11:09Speaker 1: it is. It is a mind job, like it is
- 11:12Speaker 1: messing with me mentally, and so you know, I draw back,
- 11:16Speaker 1: I get settled, and I just cannot like the routine's
- 11:20Speaker 1: not there anymore, or something's not there anymore. The and
- 11:25Speaker 1: then and then because you're not settling well and it's
- 11:28Speaker 1: getting your mind, then it's like the pins kind of
- 11:30Speaker 1: floating left or right down and then as soon as
- 11:32Speaker 1: the pin hits the bulls eye, you try to slam
- 11:35Speaker 1: the pin or the trigger down so you hit it
- 11:37Speaker 1: just right right. So I'm trying. There's there's times where
- 11:42Speaker 1: I'm trying to anticipate the shot, right, I'm trying to
- 11:46Speaker 1: you know, I'm trying to time it, which is bad,
- 11:48Speaker 1: I know. But there's also times where July and early
- 11:53Speaker 1: August I was not having this problem. I was, you know,
- 11:57Speaker 1: sixty yards probably the size of a softball groups. That's
- 12:01Speaker 1: pretty good if yeah for me, uh, you know, I'm
- 12:04Speaker 1: hitting I'm hitting real tight. Uh even even earlier this
- 12:08Speaker 1: week Monday and Tuesday really good, you know, kind of
- 12:12Speaker 1: like really good groups. Step back to fifty and sixty
- 12:17Speaker 1: something's happening and I just cannot. And then I had
- 12:23Speaker 1: a conversation with I. I actually called up Andy May
- 12:26Speaker 1: yesterday and I'm like, I expressed this with him, and
- 12:29Speaker 1: he kind of walked me through things to try and
- 12:31Speaker 1: things to do, and I think that got into my head.
- 12:35Speaker 1: And now I am like, I'm I'm shanking twenty yard shots. Yeah. Once,
- 12:41Speaker 1: he once it gets in your head, I mean, this
- 12:43Speaker 1: is exactly what I was dealing with last year. Yeah,
- 12:46Speaker 1: because I started trying to rethink everything and got really
- 12:48Speaker 1: into my head. And that's when I try. I was
- 12:51Speaker 1: trying this new process with a with an index finger
- 12:54Speaker 1: released still and then finally I had to say, you
- 12:56Speaker 1: know what, I just have to tear it all down. Yeah,
- 12:59Speaker 1: and this your start one to the back tension. I
- 13:01Speaker 1: wonder if you're kind of experiencing someone something similar to that. Yeah,
- 13:05Speaker 1: So I would say, undoubtedly this is some form of
- 13:08Speaker 1: target panic. I try. I can't even get a group
- 13:12Speaker 1: tight enough too, a consistent group tight enough right now
- 13:18Speaker 1: on the fifty and sixty range to tune my site
- 13:20Speaker 1: because I don't know, like it could be left, it
- 13:22Speaker 1: could be right, it could be high, it could be low. Um,
- 13:27Speaker 1: I know my bow is on because I will still
- 13:30Speaker 1: execute perfect shots. What I what I would say, but
- 13:34Speaker 1: a group of four, I'm not. I'm not hitting the
- 13:37Speaker 1: grouping that I that I should be right now. So
- 13:42Speaker 1: I talked to another guy and I said, uh, dude,
- 13:45Speaker 1: what do I need to do? And he right now,
- 13:47Speaker 1: he goes, dude, just set your bow down for a
- 13:48Speaker 1: day or two. Put it, put it down, walk away
- 13:51Speaker 1: from it, try not to think about it. But this
- 13:54Speaker 1: is where the dilemma hits. I'm going to I'm going
- 13:57Speaker 1: to this guy's house on Sunday to have him basically
- 14:02Speaker 1: evaluate my shot. He's really good archer. Um, he lives
- 14:06Speaker 1: near me, so I'm heading over and I want him
- 14:08Speaker 1: to break me down evaluate it. The thing that I
- 14:11Speaker 1: can't stop thinking about is I leave next Friday, just
- 14:17Speaker 1: over a week two l khunt, and I need to
- 14:22Speaker 1: be on point for that, right or I have to
- 14:26Speaker 1: start making like say, well, dude, you're not taking a
- 14:29Speaker 1: shot past forty or you're not taking a shot past
- 14:32Speaker 1: thirty or or something like that. And I don't want
- 14:35Speaker 1: that to happen. So I'm taking active steps right now
- 14:38Speaker 1: to try to educate myself and get other people involved
- 14:41Speaker 1: to help me fix this problem and hopefully, and the
- 14:45Speaker 1: crappy thing about it is I have to fix this
- 14:48Speaker 1: problem with the equipment that I currently have because I
- 14:54Speaker 1: can't switch to a back tension release right now, yes,
- 14:58Speaker 1: seven days out, and my equipment it like I need
- 15:01Speaker 1: a longer draw link on my bow if I'm going
- 15:03Speaker 1: to go to a back tension release. So it's I'm
- 15:08Speaker 1: a little frustrated, but I don't know what I need
- 15:11Speaker 1: to do. I need to chill out. I need to
- 15:12Speaker 1: like get out of my head. Yeah, I think you're
- 15:15Speaker 1: it's embarrassing to talk about. It's almost like erectile dysfunction.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Consider this is like e D for bow hunters right right, Well,
- 15:24Speaker 1: this is a safe place, Dan, and you know six
- 15:28Speaker 1: out of ten men deal with this challenge, and we
- 15:32Speaker 1: can get something discreetly sent to your house that will help.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I wish they made a pill that would improve you
- 15:38Speaker 1: accuracy every day. You're taking two pills every day, then, um,
- 15:45Speaker 1: I think you your your buddies, right, take a day
- 15:47Speaker 1: or two to just kind of try to step away
- 15:49Speaker 1: from it and then and then see what he thinks.
- 15:53Speaker 1: And then I would just even if you know, he
- 15:56Speaker 1: helps point out a couple of things and all of
- 15:58Speaker 1: a sudden you're shooting pretty good again. I would like,
- 16:02Speaker 1: for whatever it's worth, my two cents would be, do
- 16:04Speaker 1: not be afraid to restrict yourself more from a range perspective.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Don't go out there thinking like, oh I gotta shoot
- 16:11Speaker 1: fifty or sixty yards, because that's what al hunters always do,
- 16:14Speaker 1: you know, I mean, you know what happens when we
- 16:16Speaker 1: make these mistakes in the field. Um, don't feel bad
- 16:20Speaker 1: going out there and say, you know what, I'm not
- 16:21Speaker 1: gonna shoot past forty or I'm not gonna shoot past thirty,
- 16:24Speaker 1: because if just doing that will improve your confidence, just
- 16:27Speaker 1: that actually being in the woods all of a sudden,
- 16:30Speaker 1: you're thirty yard forty yard shot, You're gonna feel better,
- 16:32Speaker 1: I know when you're gonna take that sixty, that first
- 16:34Speaker 1: shot or hopefully your only shot at sixty a week
- 16:37Speaker 1: from now. Even if you're shooting okay in the field,
- 16:39Speaker 1: it's still gonna be a little bit less than ideal
- 16:41Speaker 1: because this is like a little virus that gets in
- 16:43Speaker 1: your brain. It's gonna be hard to complete. Shake. So
- 16:47Speaker 1: just to be a badass, a's stalking, get close to that,
- 16:50Speaker 1: some bitch, um'll be You'll be fine. Yeah, Like I
- 16:54Speaker 1: know that where I'm going in the Elk Woods is
- 16:58Speaker 1: not I'm not going to have a sixt yard shot.
- 17:02Speaker 1: It's deadfall all over right. I mean, I'm not gonna
- 17:04Speaker 1: have a sixty yard shot. And if I do, um,
- 17:07Speaker 1: there's a chance I'm not even gonna take it. Just
- 17:10Speaker 1: because of the places that we're going that have the
- 17:13Speaker 1: ability to have a sixty yard shot. The terrain is
- 17:16Speaker 1: just it's like way up or it's way down, and
- 17:20Speaker 1: it's just, um, I don't know. So you know, just
- 17:25Speaker 1: if I'm comparing last year to this year, I probably
- 17:29Speaker 1: won't even have a sixty yard shot. What's concerning me
- 17:32Speaker 1: is this South Dakota hunt where there's no terrain or
- 17:37Speaker 1: there's no obstructions right other than the terrain, So there's
- 17:43Speaker 1: a good chance that I'm gonna have to make a
- 17:44Speaker 1: fifty yard shot. Right. So, UM, I want to get
- 17:48Speaker 1: this bug beat well, hopefully by the time I leave
- 17:52Speaker 1: for this elk hunt, but for sure by the time
- 17:55Speaker 1: I want to leave for this uh for the mule
- 17:59Speaker 1: deer hunt. And what I've learned is the past five
- 18:02Speaker 1: days I've tried to shoot out of this, and I
- 18:05Speaker 1: don't think you can just shoot out of this problem
- 18:08Speaker 1: like this. You might want to even just like and
- 18:11Speaker 1: maybe Andy recommend this to like, just tear it back
- 18:14Speaker 1: down to basics for a few days and just like
- 18:16Speaker 1: blind bail shoot, just work on getting a good, perfect
- 18:19Speaker 1: release without worrying about aiming at something. Just shoot at
- 18:22Speaker 1: five yards and just shoot a hundred times that and
- 18:24Speaker 1: just feel comfortable getting that unanticipated release, not this like panicky,
- 18:30Speaker 1: gotta hit it right when it touches the bull's eye. Um,
- 18:34Speaker 1: just simply feeling good with that might be a nice
- 18:36Speaker 1: place to start. But I will I won't give you.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I won't be the third or fourth person tell any
- 18:42Speaker 1: what to do. You just do whatever your buddy tells you,
- 18:45Speaker 1: and and stay stay, stay strong, have faith you'll get
- 18:48Speaker 1: out of it. Yeah, I'm confident. I just need to
- 18:52Speaker 1: shake this little bump. It just kind of freaks me
- 18:54Speaker 1: out because it's the first time I've ever had anything
- 18:56Speaker 1: like this happen. Yeah, hey, I and definitely relate. I
- 19:02Speaker 1: know that feeling. So what about you, man, I mean
- 19:05Speaker 1: like you've you've been shooting your bow a lot preparing
- 19:09Speaker 1: for this. But what about the gear on this North
- 19:11Speaker 1: Dakota hunt? What's the what's the prep from a gear standpoint?
- 19:15Speaker 1: You know, it's kind of cool. I feel like I
- 19:18Speaker 1: just finished packing my truck and I feel like there's
- 19:21Speaker 1: not nearly as much gear as I used to have
- 19:23Speaker 1: to take on these trips, which is kind of a
- 19:25Speaker 1: nice thing, um, because you know what these trips are
- 19:29Speaker 1: are gonna hold. I know what these trips and tail.
- 19:32Speaker 1: I've kind of been able to minimalize my setup, so
- 19:35Speaker 1: I know, like, I know exactly what I need. I
- 19:37Speaker 1: don't need to bring anything extra. So I've got you know,
- 19:40Speaker 1: I've got this truck bed organizer, so one side has
- 19:44Speaker 1: got like a little area of like kitchen stuff, because
- 19:46Speaker 1: I'm camping out my truck on public land this whole time.
- 19:49Speaker 1: So I've got like some basic kitchen and cooking stuff.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I've got room in this big drawer for a little
- 19:54Speaker 1: portable table, camp chair, um, sleeping bags, sleeping pad, and
- 19:59Speaker 1: that's all in one draw And then the left drawer,
- 20:01Speaker 1: I've just got my basic hunting accessories. Um. So I've
- 20:06Speaker 1: got my buyos and bino harness. I've got my release
- 20:09Speaker 1: I've got extra broadheads, extra field tips. I've got my
- 20:12Speaker 1: little wind checker. I've got a grunt tube just in case.
- 20:17Speaker 1: I've got um oh couple pull up ropes. And then
- 20:23Speaker 1: I've got my saddle, my saddle tether, my lineman's belt,
- 20:27Speaker 1: and my platform, one set of sticks, and then a
- 20:33Speaker 1: couple of tripods because I'm gonna be doing a lot
- 20:35Speaker 1: of glassing and scouting from a distance on this hunt.
- 20:37Speaker 1: So I've got one tripod with a spotting scope um
- 20:41Speaker 1: that I'm gonna put a phone scope attachment on so
- 20:43Speaker 1: i can see in film deer through my phone. And
- 20:46Speaker 1: then I've got another little tripod with a set of
- 20:48Speaker 1: eighteen power binos um these kaibabs and vortex, and I
- 20:53Speaker 1: use those on that Mexican Hunt Mexico last year, and man,
- 20:57Speaker 1: I no idea how nice that could be, Like super
- 21:00Speaker 1: high power binos on a tripod. When you're doing this
- 21:02Speaker 1: kind of hunt, like for your South Dakota hunt, you
- 21:04Speaker 1: might want to get a tripod for your binos because
- 21:07Speaker 1: that just makes glassing. It's hard to the spotting scope.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I got a vortex spotting scope. God, yeah, it's a
- 21:14Speaker 1: little heavy, but you know out we're we're hunting there.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I don't think it's gonna be a big, a big issue.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I got the I got a main fro dough tripod
- 21:25Speaker 1: with the spotting scope, so I think that's going to
- 21:27Speaker 1: replace my binos as far as a you know, a
- 21:33Speaker 1: glassing perspective this year. I will say, though, you might
- 21:37Speaker 1: just want to get the binocular attachment to so you
- 21:41Speaker 1: can actually pop on the binocular onto the same tripods.
- 21:46Speaker 1: You could pull off the spotting scope and put your
- 21:49Speaker 1: binoculars on them. Because what I found, for whatever it's worth,
- 21:52Speaker 1: the spotting scope is great for like zeroing in on
- 21:54Speaker 1: something real far and like getting a great look at
- 21:56Speaker 1: it from a distance. So let's say you see a
- 21:58Speaker 1: buck and you're like, is that a shoe? It or not.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Put the spotter on it and you can really zero in.
- 22:03Speaker 1: But it's not easy to scan. It's really hard to
- 22:06Speaker 1: scan for long periods of time with a spotting scope.
- 22:10Speaker 1: With the binos on a tripod, you can sit there
- 22:13Speaker 1: and scan for hours, just go left or right, left
- 22:15Speaker 1: or right, right to left, left or right and just
- 22:17Speaker 1: scour a piece of terrain. And it's crazy how much
- 22:21Speaker 1: it helps to have it on a tripod. I never
- 22:23Speaker 1: believed it until I started using it last year. And
- 22:26Speaker 1: it makes like a monstrous difference with how clearly you
- 22:29Speaker 1: can see things far off. And this is when you're
- 22:31Speaker 1: like when you're looking five yards away or that kind
- 22:35Speaker 1: of thing. Like, it makes big, big difference, So keep
- 22:37Speaker 1: that in mind. You can get the little attachments, they're
- 22:39Speaker 1: pretty cheap. Um, then it wos just be interchange between
- 22:42Speaker 1: your spotter and your binos. But that'll be huge. That'll
- 22:45Speaker 1: be huge for me on this trip because I'm just
- 22:47Speaker 1: gonna sit up on top of hills and glass these
- 22:49Speaker 1: river bottoms every morning and the first evening when I
- 22:52Speaker 1: get there and try to figure out what's going on.
- 22:54Speaker 1: But but yeah, so a spotter and binos, two tripods,
- 22:57Speaker 1: a little like glass and pad little crazy creek chair
- 23:01Speaker 1: that you can Don't you ever heard of one of these.
- 23:04Speaker 1: It's like kind of the stadium seas is fold up
- 23:06Speaker 1: stadium seats that it's like a lawn chair with really
- 23:09Speaker 1: short legs, no legs actually no legs, so it's just
- 23:12Speaker 1: basically like a butt pad and a backpad connected by
- 23:15Speaker 1: like straps. Right. Um, So I'll use that to sit
- 23:19Speaker 1: out there in glass. Um you know, I'm using that
- 23:23Speaker 1: back tension release the silver back. Um some bringing that
- 23:28Speaker 1: um my bow arrows. What's the tamps supposed to be
- 23:33Speaker 1: like up there? As far as the gear that you're
- 23:36Speaker 1: the clothing you're gonna be wearing. Yeah, so it's gonna vary. Um,
- 23:39Speaker 1: the hottest day looks like could be up in the
- 23:42Speaker 1: upper eighties and the coldest you can get in the mornings,
- 23:46Speaker 1: um in the upper forties. So it's gonna arrange from
- 23:48Speaker 1: upper forties upper eighties. Um, there's gonna be some days
- 23:52Speaker 1: with like highs in the high sixties, So I'm I'm
- 23:54Speaker 1: looking forward to those high sixty low seventy temperatures for
- 23:58Speaker 1: the highs. There's will be some good days, but there's
- 23:59Speaker 1: like our two reel hot ones, but mostly I'm wearing
- 24:02Speaker 1: like a wool pant or a light um just like
- 24:05Speaker 1: a light wool pant. You know this is gonna be
- 24:08Speaker 1: pretty warm weather. So first light it's got it's called
- 24:11Speaker 1: the obsidian. I rock that, and then UM and then
- 24:15Speaker 1: up top just a single light basse layer wool base layer,
- 24:18Speaker 1: long sleeve just to be camouflaged but but lightweight. And
- 24:22Speaker 1: then I'll have like a little lightweight UM vest just
- 24:27Speaker 1: in case it gets cool in the mornings. But overall
- 24:31Speaker 1: planning for hot weather. I've got rain garon bringing um.
- 24:35Speaker 1: I got a warm hat just in case a freak
- 24:37Speaker 1: cold front moves through and it's cooler in the mornings
- 24:39Speaker 1: and it looks like right now. But overall pretty pretty
- 24:42Speaker 1: minimal stuff. Just a handful base layers, a couple of
- 24:44Speaker 1: light pairs of pants, one warmer jacket just in case,
- 24:47Speaker 1: y um, and man like that's it. I mean, and
- 24:53Speaker 1: I guess I got one big cooler. So I'm bringing
- 24:55Speaker 1: out food and drinks and stuff. And then if I
- 24:57Speaker 1: kill something, I've got a cooler bringing me back. And
- 24:59Speaker 1: I am bringing out a little generator because I'm trying
- 25:02Speaker 1: to work out there and trying to keep my computer charged,
- 25:05Speaker 1: trying to keep like Azonics batteries charge that stuff. So
- 25:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna bring a little generator, um, but all that
- 25:11Speaker 1: can fit, all that's gonna fit in my drawers except
- 25:14Speaker 1: for the cooler and the generator. Um. And then I've
- 25:17Speaker 1: got the whole rest of the back of my truck
- 25:19Speaker 1: to sleep in to be there. Um. And then just
- 25:21Speaker 1: like my basic clothes, a little defeld clothes, Um, it's
- 25:26Speaker 1: gonna be. It's gonna yeah. I mean Andy May was
- 25:30Speaker 1: possible going to go, and then he couldn't, and then
- 25:32Speaker 1: Spencer was gonna go, and then he bailed last week.
- 25:35Speaker 1: So now I'm going solo. Yeah. Um. You know an
- 25:40Speaker 1: interesting thing I just just popped on my sticks. I'm
- 25:43Speaker 1: bringing my lone Wolf sticks out here, and um Tethered,
- 25:46Speaker 1: the same company that makes the saddles that I'm rocking, Um,
- 25:50Speaker 1: they just released the thing called their Versus strap, which
- 25:54Speaker 1: is basically a strap that you can use on your
- 25:57Speaker 1: sticks or something like that. UM that replaces the strap
- 26:02Speaker 1: with the big buckle on him. So this way, it's
- 26:06Speaker 1: a it's a buckle list strap basically, it's it's a
- 26:08Speaker 1: I can't remember exactly what kind of fabric this is, man,
- 26:11Speaker 1: but it was incredibly high strength, high tensile strength strap
- 26:17Speaker 1: fabric that then has loops, different loops at all these
- 26:21Speaker 1: different like every inch is another loop, another loop, another loop,
- 26:24Speaker 1: another loop. And so what you just basically do is
- 26:26Speaker 1: you put your stick up against the tree, you wrap
- 26:29Speaker 1: the verse of strap, what you put one side of
- 26:31Speaker 1: the verse strap over that button on your long will stick.
- 26:34Speaker 1: You know, I'm talking about where the strap with you
- 26:36Speaker 1: should go, and then you just wrap it around the
- 26:38Speaker 1: tree and you're keeping it, you know, perfectly a straight
- 26:43Speaker 1: up and down, and then you just pick the loop
- 26:45Speaker 1: that it would be the tightest on. You pop the
- 26:48Speaker 1: loop over the button again as tight as you can go,
- 26:51Speaker 1: and then just crank your stick down and then it's
- 26:54Speaker 1: on their super tight and you don't need to have
- 26:56Speaker 1: a buckle that you have to tighten down and crank
- 26:59Speaker 1: and always work about banging around because that's like the
- 27:01Speaker 1: one thing I hate with my sticks. Even though I
- 27:03Speaker 1: try to tape them, you still can get those little
- 27:06Speaker 1: metallic clinks and clanks, you know. And so these little
- 27:10Speaker 1: straps I just popped on today, I'm buckless. So I
- 27:13Speaker 1: just tightened down all the steps of my lone Wolf
- 27:15Speaker 1: sticks to make sure, everything's real quiet and since down
- 27:18Speaker 1: real good, and I threw the versus strap songs, so
- 27:21Speaker 1: I've got no buckles now, so I'm feeling pretty stealthy.
- 27:23Speaker 1: I gonna slip out there with my sticks. I've got
- 27:27Speaker 1: got my saddle. We'll slip into a tree, real quiet,
- 27:30Speaker 1: real quick and be hunting without you know, needing to
- 27:32Speaker 1: tote around a bunch of stuff. So I'm I'm excited
- 27:36Speaker 1: from that perspective, and then you know, that's all there
- 27:40Speaker 1: is to it. I did bring some game bags and
- 27:41Speaker 1: one of my bigger backpacks stuff I do kill one
- 27:43Speaker 1: out there. I'm just gonna quarter it out and hike
- 27:47Speaker 1: it out because this this I'm probably gonna be hiking
- 27:50Speaker 1: in a minimum of a mile, if not a couple
- 27:52Speaker 1: of miles in for these these hunts, and a lot
- 27:54Speaker 1: of times you have to climb some pretty serious bluffs
- 27:57Speaker 1: and cliffs to get out of the river bottom. Um,
- 28:01Speaker 1: so I don't want to try dragon one out of that.
- 28:03Speaker 1: So that's what's in my truck right now. Cool, dude,
- 28:07Speaker 1: it's just a it's this a place that you've hunt
- 28:12Speaker 1: before or yeah, this is the show right all right?
- 28:16Speaker 1: So saddle, now, I mean you're not. You're not going
- 28:22Speaker 1: the land of the tree stand anymore. Yep. The only
- 28:25Speaker 1: time I'm using tree stands is like where I where
- 28:28Speaker 1: I already have like a semi permanent setup, you know,
- 28:31Speaker 1: so on a couple of properties that I've always had
- 28:33Speaker 1: stands up, those are still there. That's easy, um, But
- 28:36Speaker 1: for my new running guns, it's just a lot easier
- 28:39Speaker 1: just running the saddle so and so, like in five years,
- 28:43Speaker 1: are you gonna say, dude, I was hunting with the
- 28:44Speaker 1: saddle before it was cool. I think I'm too late
- 28:47Speaker 1: even to say that the party. I think I think
- 28:50Speaker 1: you could say I started saddle hunting when it when
- 28:53Speaker 1: it became cool. Maybe Okay, I think I hit it
- 28:56Speaker 1: just as it was becoming. But but you need you
- 29:01Speaker 1: need to give it a try. I've got I can
- 29:03Speaker 1: get you an extra one if you want to give
- 29:04Speaker 1: a shot. I don't know, man, I I just can't
- 29:08Speaker 1: like number one first, you know, like kind of going
- 29:11Speaker 1: back to what you said about the straps and the
- 29:14Speaker 1: mods that a lot of people do and you know,
- 29:16Speaker 1: trying to go ultra light and you know, like for me, man,
- 29:21Speaker 1: even if I'm walking two miles into a tree into
- 29:25Speaker 1: a set which I never do, because my farms are
- 29:27Speaker 1: just laid out different in the public ground that I
- 29:30Speaker 1: go and I hunt on, doesn't I don't need necessarily
- 29:34Speaker 1: to walk Let's say, like two miles. I can see
- 29:36Speaker 1: where a real light set up would be awesome. Let's
- 29:38Speaker 1: say in Virginia, where these guys are basically climbing a
- 29:41Speaker 1: thousand up and down to try to get a couple
- 29:44Speaker 1: of miles into their you know, to their tree stands.
- 29:48Speaker 1: But for me, like the added weight just doesn't bother
- 29:52Speaker 1: me that much. I mean, I used to be the
- 29:54Speaker 1: guy who was carrying camera equipment with me all the time, right,
- 29:58Speaker 1: and all this other extra gear, and it's just like
- 30:02Speaker 1: one or two pounds and stuff like that never bothered me.
- 30:06Speaker 1: On top of that, all these mods that people are doing,
- 30:10Speaker 1: that's cool, I get it, you know, it's awesome. I
- 30:13Speaker 1: love that you that people are excited about that. But
- 30:15Speaker 1: for me, like, I guess I've never been the kind
- 30:19Speaker 1: of guy who made a crap ton of noise setting
- 30:23Speaker 1: up a tree stand. Don't get me wrong, there's times
- 30:25Speaker 1: where a little dink might happen, But I feel like
- 30:29Speaker 1: I'm fairly observant and about the noise that I'm making.
- 30:34Speaker 1: And I don't need like all the straps and the
- 30:37Speaker 1: tape and the stuff. The second that the accessories or
- 30:41Speaker 1: the secondary market type things on my on my stand.
- 30:45Speaker 1: So I don't know. I I don't personally do that stuff,
- 30:49Speaker 1: but I can I understand why people do. Yeah, fair enough, man,
- 30:55Speaker 1: I uh, I hear what you're saying. And there's definitely
- 30:58Speaker 1: like something we said about you've got to come a
- 31:00Speaker 1: level of your setup and if it ain't broke, don't
- 31:02Speaker 1: fix it. I get that too. So and me, like
- 31:05Speaker 1: a strong wind and a saddle, I'd probably just be
- 31:09Speaker 1: like wrapped around that tree like a tether ball. I
- 31:14Speaker 1: think I'm trying to convince you try saddle, just because
- 31:16Speaker 1: I want to see your big gass up swinging in
- 31:18Speaker 1: a tree like that. Fur about so, I'm like it
- 31:22Speaker 1: would be something. So, So that's my setup. That's what
- 31:28Speaker 1: I'm bringing out there. Um, you know, relatively simple. What
- 31:33Speaker 1: about you? What do you? What do you bringing on
- 31:35Speaker 1: your hunt? And so I have the luxury of hunting.
- 31:38Speaker 1: I'm this elkin. I'm hunting out of an actual cabin right,
- 31:41Speaker 1: there's no electricity, there's no running water or anything like that,
- 31:45Speaker 1: just a uh four square walls and a roof in
- 31:49Speaker 1: four walls and a roof up in the mountains. Right,
- 31:52Speaker 1: So that's where I get to come home to every night.
- 31:54Speaker 1: So for me, I'm I'm bringing everything for this, right,
- 31:59Speaker 1: I just in case. Right, I don't have to worry
- 32:02Speaker 1: about Wait, I don't have to worry about only being
- 32:05Speaker 1: able to carry this much stuff or whatnot. So I
- 32:09Speaker 1: have the luxury of bringing all my gear with me.
- 32:12Speaker 1: I have a big it's called a bronch box. Have
- 32:14Speaker 1: you ever heard of them? So it's this big, almost
- 32:18Speaker 1: like a giant YETI cooler, But it's just a box
- 32:23Speaker 1: that you can keep your gear in. There's some dividers
- 32:25Speaker 1: in it and whatnot. So I'm I I load one
- 32:28Speaker 1: of those all the way up. I have my bowcase,
- 32:31Speaker 1: uh that I put all my archery equipment in, and
- 32:33Speaker 1: then a couple of extra duffel bags for let's say,
- 32:37Speaker 1: clothes around camp, you know, some additional tennis shoes, like
- 32:41Speaker 1: my hygiene products, toothbrush and contact solution and stuff like that.
- 32:45Speaker 1: So I'm able to get away with bringing everything. Um now,
- 32:50Speaker 1: when I actually load up and head into the mountains,
- 32:53Speaker 1: I mean, did you want me to get into detail
- 32:55Speaker 1: about that? Sure what's in your pack when you head
- 32:57Speaker 1: in the mountains. So it's that's pretty simplified because I
- 33:02Speaker 1: do get to come home every night to a place
- 33:05Speaker 1: like not necessarily a drop camp. I have everything I
- 33:08Speaker 1: need for the day. So in my pack is my raincoat,
- 33:12Speaker 1: uh my basically bars and apple for the day. Um,
- 33:17Speaker 1: I'm usually running about five leaders of water. I have
- 33:22Speaker 1: two bladders that I that I run. You're carrying five
- 33:26Speaker 1: leaders in these day? Yeah, d of water. I drink
- 33:31Speaker 1: all of it. That's a lot of draft. And that's
- 33:35Speaker 1: just for for a day like that's your day hunt
- 33:37Speaker 1: every morning. So you have five nail Jane bottles with you,
- 33:41Speaker 1: no bladders, but I mean the equivalent of five nail
- 33:44Speaker 1: Geane bottles. That's five leaders. Yeah, I guess so. But
- 33:48Speaker 1: but I'm telling you for you man, I am. I
- 33:52Speaker 1: do not want to get sick. And you don't care
- 33:54Speaker 1: about weight. Now now I really understand you don't care
- 33:56Speaker 1: about extra weight. Well I do, right, But like water
- 34:00Speaker 1: is important, so I'm not bringing in a ton of
- 34:05Speaker 1: other stuff. I have game bags that I have in there.
- 34:08Speaker 1: I have a raincoat, and I have my food for
- 34:10Speaker 1: the day. Um, I have on my pack, right and
- 34:15Speaker 1: that's that's really it. That's in my pack, right. I
- 34:19Speaker 1: have a binocular case that holds my release. Um, I'm
- 34:23Speaker 1: taking two trekking polls. I have my Vortex range finder.
- 34:26Speaker 1: I have my Vortex binoculars. Are you running? Oh man,
- 34:31Speaker 1: I got him. I got him like five years ago.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Uh razor h d S or something like that. Okay, yeah,
- 34:39Speaker 1: so those and then um, I have a cow call
- 34:46Speaker 1: and that's all kind of packed into my bino case.
- 34:52Speaker 1: They have a little pocket on the side of him.
- 34:54Speaker 1: And what kind of cow call are you is? And
- 34:55Speaker 1: you using a read? Are you using a like a
- 34:59Speaker 1: big hand call? I'm using It's not a big hand call.
- 35:02Speaker 1: It fits in my hand. Uh. And it's it has
- 35:05Speaker 1: a read in it, but it's not a diaphragm, That's
- 35:08Speaker 1: what I mean. Yeah, So I'm using one of those.
- 35:11Speaker 1: And then this year I bought a bugle tube, which
- 35:14Speaker 1: you want to see a lot of neighbors come outside
- 35:16Speaker 1: of their door and I the front yard. I was
- 35:19Speaker 1: sitting in my garage practicing my bugles the other night
- 35:22Speaker 1: and like five neighbors all came out to see what
- 35:25Speaker 1: the hell is going on? So I got my bugle tube. Um,
- 35:30Speaker 1: and that's gonna be kind of wrapped around my waist
- 35:33Speaker 1: or around my shoulders so I can easily get to
- 35:35Speaker 1: it if I need it. And then my bow right,
- 35:38Speaker 1: I got my prime with my day six arrows so
- 35:43Speaker 1: real heavy arrow um, my wasp broad heads and fixed
- 35:47Speaker 1: mechanical fixed fixed, dude, I got it. I'm sticking with
- 35:52Speaker 1: fixed for a while and the grains under now. But
- 36:01Speaker 1: my total arrowweight is fi this year. Um. Other than that,
- 36:06Speaker 1: just like my boots are crispy, I'm I invested in
- 36:10Speaker 1: some gators this year, so because one thing that I
- 36:14Speaker 1: was walking through the grass and even one crick that
- 36:18Speaker 1: runs down the mountain, and my boots didn't my socks
- 36:22Speaker 1: didn't get wet, but my pants would get wet, and
- 36:24Speaker 1: once they get wet, they kind of went up and
- 36:26Speaker 1: it would They still dried out throughout the day, but
- 36:29Speaker 1: it was still a little uncomfortable, you know, having the
- 36:33Speaker 1: you know, from the boot to the bottom of your
- 36:36Speaker 1: calf just like that six inches wet. So I bought
- 36:40Speaker 1: some gators hopefully to alleviate that problem. And then I'm
- 36:44Speaker 1: running some alpaca and wool socks. I'm running, uh, you know,
- 36:49Speaker 1: some sick apex hoodie I'm running a then the Sick
- 36:54Speaker 1: of Mountain pants, the Sick of Mountain jacket, I have
- 36:58Speaker 1: uh an insulation. My installation layer is the Calvin Lightweight
- 37:04Speaker 1: vest and then just a regular hat. And that's really it. Man.
- 37:10Speaker 1: What game bags do you use? Okay, so I have
- 37:14Speaker 1: a I have some that I wore, but some dudes
- 37:16Speaker 1: actually sent me some in the mail and it's called
- 37:21Speaker 1: crack SHAWL g R A K K S A W.
- 37:26Speaker 1: And they're reusable, so they're actually made from the same
- 37:31Speaker 1: material that your tent tarp or the cover of your
- 37:35Speaker 1: tent would be the rain tarp, so it's really lightweight.
- 37:38Speaker 1: They all have toggles on them so you can zip
- 37:40Speaker 1: it shut and um so I'm gonna be bringing those
- 37:45Speaker 1: with me. And then I also have some just like
- 37:48Speaker 1: those cloth game bags that are pretty much disposable as well,
- 37:52Speaker 1: but these game bags look pretty sweet, so I'll be
- 37:56Speaker 1: and I guess yeah, those game bags will be in
- 37:58Speaker 1: there with me too. So, so you guys have like
- 38:01Speaker 1: beds and sheets and like really nice sleeping accommodations as Kevin.
- 38:05Speaker 1: No no sheets, but there is a mattress um that
- 38:09Speaker 1: has like when we get there, we gotta it's in
- 38:12Speaker 1: like a this latext it almost looks like it's a
- 38:17Speaker 1: condom for a bed for a mattress. So then we
- 38:20Speaker 1: take that off and then we just put our sleeping
- 38:24Speaker 1: bags on top of that. So yes, we get a
- 38:26Speaker 1: lay on a mattress every night, which is awesome. That
- 38:29Speaker 1: is nice. I U I rock. That just made me
- 38:33Speaker 1: think of like my camping gear. The mattress I'm using
- 38:37Speaker 1: is much different than that. I've got a little therm
- 38:39Speaker 1: arrest neo light and um, just a small like the
- 38:43Speaker 1: little backpacking inflatable one. Um, and then you bring them
- 38:48Speaker 1: back sleeping bag. Yep, what's your bag these days? So? Um,
- 38:53Speaker 1: I got it right here. Let me check it is
- 38:56Speaker 1: a alps. It's an ALP's negative negative or no way,
- 39:09Speaker 1: it's either negative twenty or zero. You'll be toasty. Yeah.
- 39:13Speaker 1: So but I'm telling you, man, it gets cold up there.
- 39:16Speaker 1: What I expected temperature range out there. So let's see,
- 39:19Speaker 1: the last day that we were there last year was
- 39:22Speaker 1: it was like eight the day we left a mountain.
- 39:25Speaker 1: But every morning walking up it was like thirty five
- 39:29Speaker 1: degrees in the mornings. Uh, and then it would you
- 39:34Speaker 1: would you get up to about the fifties so there's
- 39:38Speaker 1: parts where when you're in the shade, you're doing a
- 39:41Speaker 1: lot of getting dressed and undressing. Right, So I can
- 39:45Speaker 1: remember the one day, the one of the like the
- 39:47Speaker 1: third day of the hunt, we hike in, right, so
- 39:50Speaker 1: all I'm doing is wearing my base layer top and
- 39:53Speaker 1: my pants, and then we get there and I instantly
- 39:56Speaker 1: start to get cold, right, so I gotta put on
- 39:58Speaker 1: my insulation, like to put on my shell and that
- 40:03Speaker 1: that keeps you warm. But then you start moving again,
- 40:06Speaker 1: then you're too hot, so you gotta take all that off,
- 40:08Speaker 1: put it back into your pack, and you're just doing
- 40:10Speaker 1: that whenever you stop. You need because that I remember
- 40:14Speaker 1: one time we set up and I didn't put I
- 40:16Speaker 1: was really hot and I didn't put my insulation layer
- 40:19Speaker 1: back on, and I got at the end of the
- 40:23Speaker 1: calling sequence. I was almost shaken because I was so cold.
- 40:26Speaker 1: And that happened in that was like high forties and
- 40:30Speaker 1: for that by by the time that was all happening
- 40:32Speaker 1: for that morning hunt. And it kind of makes you realize,
- 40:36Speaker 1: like that's why layering is so important, because you have
- 40:39Speaker 1: to control you have to control it. If I didn't
- 40:41Speaker 1: have anything up there, man, I would have had to
- 40:43Speaker 1: go back down to the to the cabin. Yeah, when
- 40:47Speaker 1: you're way out there more important. And you're, like you said,
- 40:51Speaker 1: such a variable activity levels and that kind of hunt
- 40:54Speaker 1: got to be be able just with it, no doubt
- 40:56Speaker 1: about that. So, speaking of varying activity levels and stuff
- 41:00Speaker 1: and going down with the cabin or heading out in
- 41:02Speaker 1: the morning, do you have, like now is your second
- 41:06Speaker 1: year hunting this place, do you guys have like a
- 41:08Speaker 1: very specific game plan going into day one? Like do
- 41:11Speaker 1: you know what you're gonna do? Are you showing up
- 41:13Speaker 1: and just gonna stand outside the cabin and figure it out? Yeah?
- 41:17Speaker 1: So I think there there's like there's one big area
- 41:23Speaker 1: that has multiple spots in it, and then there is
- 41:25Speaker 1: another area that has two big area that has two
- 41:29Speaker 1: other spots. And what I mean spots, I mean these
- 41:31Speaker 1: meadows at the top of the at the almost the
- 41:34Speaker 1: top of these mountains, right we're talking. We start off
- 41:37Speaker 1: at about ten thousand two feet is where the cabin is,
- 41:39Speaker 1: and then we're getting up to about eleven three I
- 41:43Speaker 1: think was the highest we got last year. So, um,
- 41:48Speaker 1: we know what we're doing. It's just a matter of
- 41:50Speaker 1: where we're going, if that makes sense. So we'll we'll
- 41:53Speaker 1: either go to Spot A or we'll go to Spot B,
- 41:56Speaker 1: and then we'll work these meadows throughout this face of
- 42:00Speaker 1: this mountain. So you so you know of a handful
- 42:03Speaker 1: of these meadows, tell me, like what you're doing. Let's
- 42:07Speaker 1: say it's early morning, first day, you decide we're to
- 42:10Speaker 1: go to Meadow A. What does that actually mean? What
- 42:13Speaker 1: does your morning hunt look like working your way to A?
- 42:17Speaker 1: Or do you do you hike in before daylight and
- 42:19Speaker 1: get to a daylight? And then like, what are you
- 42:21Speaker 1: actually doing that? First? Okay, so we're leaving. Let's let's
- 42:24Speaker 1: I'm just gonna walk you through what we did the
- 42:27Speaker 1: most last year. So wake up, eat breakfast, get dressed.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Telling how how long before daylight is this? We're talking
- 42:33Speaker 1: about an hour before daylight. We're leaving. We're leaving an
- 42:37Speaker 1: hour before daylight. It takes us roughly forty minutes to
- 42:41Speaker 1: an hour to get to our first stop. Where it's
- 42:46Speaker 1: now we can start seeing things, right, it's it's gray light.
- 42:50Speaker 1: And just you know, first, it's so loud in the
- 42:54Speaker 1: correct when we're walking in it, you can't hear anything
- 42:57Speaker 1: else except the creek you get up off on the
- 43:00Speaker 1: first Uh, this first plateau kind of this bench, then
- 43:05Speaker 1: you can start the crick noise goes away, then you
- 43:08Speaker 1: can start listening right that's when we start to call
- 43:11Speaker 1: right up, right away, and we're not to the first
- 43:14Speaker 1: meadow yet. We're calling on our way into the meadow
- 43:17Speaker 1: or setting up for the first listening, watching, and then
- 43:23Speaker 1: moving our way up to this first meadow, and then
- 43:25Speaker 1: we'll set up another calling sequence, work our way up
- 43:28Speaker 1: the meadow, do another calling sequence. Because these meadows are
- 43:31Speaker 1: real long, they're basically avalanche shoots that UM and either
- 43:36Speaker 1: an avalanche has destroyed all the trees coming on the
- 43:39Speaker 1: way down and that's where the grass has grown up,
- 43:42Speaker 1: or just over time maybe a mud slide or a
- 43:45Speaker 1: rock slide or or straight up trees just didn't grow
- 43:48Speaker 1: there and that's where the grass grows. So that's where
- 43:50Speaker 1: these these elk are feeding throughout the night and morning
- 43:55Speaker 1: and evenings. And then we just do that to all
- 43:59Speaker 1: the different meadow right bounce, bounce throughout and if we
- 44:02Speaker 1: hear a bugle, let's say, we just drop what we're
- 44:06Speaker 1: doing and we go straight for it. Nice And how
- 44:10Speaker 1: do you feel this year coming into year two of
- 44:13Speaker 1: this spot again? UM confidence level? Like, how likely do
- 44:18Speaker 1: you think you're are you going to this? Like I'm
- 44:20Speaker 1: gonna get one. So here's what I'll say. I'm gonna
- 44:24Speaker 1: take my archery skills out of the equation right now,
- 44:27Speaker 1: because you know, I'm a little shook for that. But
- 44:31Speaker 1: from a from a strategy standpoint and getting there, man,
- 44:34Speaker 1: I feel like last year we had I'm gonna say
- 44:38Speaker 1: three encounters. One of them I screwed up on and
- 44:42Speaker 1: I think I moved and whatever was coming in saw me.
- 44:46Speaker 1: The other one took a s by surprise, and then
- 44:49Speaker 1: the other encounter that we had, my buddy Ryan the
- 44:52Speaker 1: broadhead hit the shoulder and there was zero almost zero penetration.
- 44:57Speaker 1: So so we're going to week later now, that's one
- 45:01Speaker 1: week closer to the rut. So I think we're gonna
- 45:04Speaker 1: we're gonna hear a lot more bugles, We're gonna be
- 45:07Speaker 1: able to make a lot more moves and a lot
- 45:09Speaker 1: more adjustments and kind of know where the Elk are
- 45:12Speaker 1: at because of it just being one week closer to
- 45:16Speaker 1: their rut. We're we're gonna be there from the six
- 45:21Speaker 1: or the or the seventh, and we're leaving on the
- 45:22Speaker 1: fifth morning of the fifteen. So However, many days that
- 45:25Speaker 1: is of being able to try to locate where these
- 45:29Speaker 1: animals are at, and just that with knowing how the
- 45:33Speaker 1: terrain lays and knowing what we did last year, I
- 45:36Speaker 1: feel confident the group that I'm with will have another
- 45:40Speaker 1: crack at a a llegal bowl. Are you ready for
- 45:46Speaker 1: the suffer fest? The suffer fest that if someone kills
- 45:50Speaker 1: one getting it off the mountain? Right, So here's the
- 45:53Speaker 1: cool part. Now, it's still gonna suck, But we go
- 45:58Speaker 1: up from the cabin. Means that wherever we shoot, we're
- 46:02Speaker 1: only going down for the for the most part. So
- 46:05Speaker 1: it's not like I'm gonna have to shoot it in
- 46:07Speaker 1: this big gorge and then hike at five or eight
- 46:11Speaker 1: hundred feet straight up. Now, I don't know where this
- 46:15Speaker 1: animal is gonna die, But for the most part, everywhere
- 46:17Speaker 1: that we were last year is a descent down to
- 46:22Speaker 1: the camp. Yeah, that's nice. So it's not even like
- 46:25Speaker 1: where we're in Idaho, where even when you're coming back,
- 46:27Speaker 1: the still ups and downs all the way. Dude, I
- 46:30Speaker 1: have nightmares about that place. Really. Oh dude, I just remember,
- 46:36Speaker 1: like a grown man like you had been out there
- 46:39Speaker 1: all summer and you were walking and you got those
- 46:42Speaker 1: long ass legs and you were making it look easy,
- 46:44Speaker 1: and here I was just like I was whining like
- 46:50Speaker 1: a baby. Oh rus start, but you get there? Yeah,
- 46:56Speaker 1: uh but yeah, I mean, I hope I'm going with
- 47:00Speaker 1: two other guys, and I just man, I'd love to
- 47:03Speaker 1: kill three elk. I'm gonna probably shoot for I think
- 47:07Speaker 1: that's what I like. That moderate expectations. Yeah, no, man,
- 47:12Speaker 1: I think it's uh, first elk that steps out in
- 47:14Speaker 1: front of me that's legal is going to get shot.
- 47:17Speaker 1: So can you shoot a cow? Yep? So even if
- 47:21Speaker 1: there's bugling around you and a cow steps out twenty
- 47:24Speaker 1: yards and it's like a gimme and I don't know,
- 47:27Speaker 1: it just depends on what kind of conversation I want
- 47:29Speaker 1: to have with the wife. She's like, you went to
- 47:31Speaker 1: Colorado and to bring anything back again. So it's like
- 47:35Speaker 1: I can't share the whole story of how a cow
- 47:37Speaker 1: was standing broadside at twenty yards, but you know, like
- 47:41Speaker 1: fifty yards into the timber was was a bulb bugling
- 47:44Speaker 1: right behind her, but he decided to never come out.
- 47:46Speaker 1: You know, Like, I don't know, I guess I guess
- 47:48Speaker 1: my answer to that question is I'll just probably play
- 47:51Speaker 1: it by ear. Yeah, fair enough. So what's your North
- 47:54Speaker 1: Dakota deal? Like, are you only shooting booners or what? Yeah,
- 47:57Speaker 1: that's always do now jehuh, Dan's just hold out for booters. No,
- 48:02Speaker 1: I'd say, um, I have I would love to shoot
- 48:09Speaker 1: a four year old or older, right, But if I
- 48:13Speaker 1: get it, it's gonna be a lot depending on Like
- 48:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna kind of take I don't want to say inventory,
- 48:18Speaker 1: but kind of take inventory of the situation when I
- 48:19Speaker 1: get there the first few days, if I'm seeing like
- 48:22Speaker 1: some really nice bucks, like I do believe there are
- 48:25Speaker 1: mature bucks there that could be like really nice mature bucks.
- 48:29Speaker 1: And if I'm seeing dear like that, I feel like
- 48:31Speaker 1: I have enough time that I could work them and
- 48:34Speaker 1: I could get a shot at you know, uh fifty
- 48:37Speaker 1: type four or five year old buck. Um is what
- 48:40Speaker 1: I would you know, that'd be over the moon, super
- 48:42Speaker 1: duper happy if something like that happened. But if the
- 48:45Speaker 1: first couple of days I'm not seeing anything like that
- 48:47Speaker 1: at all, If I'm just seeing you know, three year olds,
- 48:49Speaker 1: If basically I want to shoot at the top, you know,
- 48:51Speaker 1: five percent of what's out there, the top two percent
- 48:53Speaker 1: of one out there. So if it's the best year
- 48:56Speaker 1: I'm seeing or like three year olds or one twenty
- 48:58Speaker 1: or something, and I'm hunting, I have six days and
- 49:00Speaker 1: that's all I've seen, then I'd be pretty happy shooting
- 49:03Speaker 1: a nice three year old. Um. But that's that's like
- 49:06Speaker 1: the lowest. That's my floor. UM, Like a really good
- 49:10Speaker 1: three year old would be the floor. And I might not.
- 49:13Speaker 1: I don't know. I feel like even that might it
- 49:17Speaker 1: will be like in the moment situation, I'm not sure. Um.
- 49:20Speaker 1: More and more, it's like I just want that big bodied,
- 49:23Speaker 1: obviously old buck. Um. But at the same time, sometimes
- 49:27Speaker 1: you know buck's coming in and you get excited and
- 49:29Speaker 1: you're like, that's a good one and you take the
- 49:30Speaker 1: shot and then maybe he was three, but who cares?
- 49:33Speaker 1: Is a cool experience. Well that's the thing. This is
- 49:35Speaker 1: your first time ever hunting in North Dakota, right, Well, no,
- 49:39Speaker 1: I hunted like two days last year. So you know,
- 49:44Speaker 1: last year I killed that buck in Montana and then
- 49:46Speaker 1: I made I met up with Josh at this same
- 49:49Speaker 1: place and then for one night and one morning I glassed.
- 49:53Speaker 1: We didn't see anything we wanted to hunt, and so
- 49:55Speaker 1: then after that we pulled the plug, drove like an
- 49:57Speaker 1: hour and a half or two hours to another spot,
- 49:59Speaker 1: and then we hunt did another glass to night in
- 50:02Speaker 1: the morning, and then we hunted a night in the morning. Um,
- 50:05Speaker 1: and it came close on a couple of bucks at
- 50:08Speaker 1: that new spot. But this, this original place is just
- 50:11Speaker 1: it's a really cool area. I know they're there. It's
- 50:14Speaker 1: like a thorn in my side that we didn't figure
- 50:16Speaker 1: it out last year. So I've got one too. I've
- 50:21Speaker 1: got two different glassing knobs that I've been to that
- 50:24Speaker 1: I like as far as places where I can set
- 50:26Speaker 1: up with a spotting scope and binoculars and glass like
- 50:29Speaker 1: miles of river bottom and try to see something if
- 50:32Speaker 1: if nothing's happening there. I've got another area that I
- 50:36Speaker 1: found on on X that is within hiking distance of
- 50:39Speaker 1: one of those points. So I was set up camp
- 50:41Speaker 1: but one glassing knob and then hike in a cross
- 50:44Speaker 1: the river, hike about two miles to get to this
- 50:46Speaker 1: other area. And it just looks excuse me, it looks dying.
- 50:51Speaker 1: In my last year, I drove around. There were some
- 50:54Speaker 1: roads um that you leave some public lane you get
- 50:58Speaker 1: into private and there was some like alf offa fields
- 51:01Speaker 1: and this private land, and this stretch of public land
- 51:03Speaker 1: is on the other side of the river from that,
- 51:05Speaker 1: so it's really hard to get to. But if I
- 51:07Speaker 1: were to start in the public hike two miles, I
- 51:09Speaker 1: can get behind that private land where that alfalfa is,
- 51:12Speaker 1: and I would just be shocked if there's not a
- 51:14Speaker 1: whole bunch of deer in and around that. So that
- 51:17Speaker 1: would be kind of brutal to hike in, you know,
- 51:20Speaker 1: two plus miles every day, in and out, in and out.
- 51:22Speaker 1: But um, that would be option C if A and
- 51:27Speaker 1: B if the easier spots don't work out, And then
- 51:31Speaker 1: if that doesn't work out, I've got I've got probably
- 51:33Speaker 1: seven or eight more places just marked on the map
- 51:36Speaker 1: that I've never been but that looks similar to these spots.
- 51:40Speaker 1: So you know, basically, I'm looking for places where there's
- 51:44Speaker 1: public land that meets the river and then there's some
- 51:47Speaker 1: good cover down along the river, which usually looks like
- 51:50Speaker 1: cottonwood trees and cedars and like some willow brush and
- 51:54Speaker 1: stuff like that. If you've got enough like that along
- 51:56Speaker 1: these river bottoms, um usually have some white tails in there.
- 52:00Speaker 1: So I'll just bounce between every one of those and
- 52:03Speaker 1: basically the game plan is find a high spot, sit
- 52:06Speaker 1: up there for a morning, you know, and I won't
- 52:08Speaker 1: I won't hunt the mornings until I know there's actually
- 52:10Speaker 1: a buck. I won't hunt otherwise I'll spend mornings glassing
- 52:13Speaker 1: trying to find one. And this is that kind of
- 52:16Speaker 1: location where you can just see long distances. Um. So
- 52:19Speaker 1: I'm going to get there the night before opening day.
- 52:22Speaker 1: So I'm gonna glass the night before in my first
- 52:25Speaker 1: like idea location, glass the next morning, and then hopefully
- 52:28Speaker 1: after those two scouting sessions, I'll know where to move
- 52:32Speaker 1: into with the saddle for that first night's hunt. Um.
- 52:36Speaker 1: And I'm gonna keep on doing that, but I'm not
- 52:38Speaker 1: going to be I'm not gonna be afraid to also
- 52:41Speaker 1: like push in there, you know, like if the first
- 52:43Speaker 1: couple of nights from my glassing knob off the road,
- 52:45Speaker 1: I can't see anything. I also think it's worth one
- 52:49Speaker 1: of the things. I talked to a friend of mine
- 52:50Speaker 1: who's hunting in this general area before, and he had
- 52:53Speaker 1: talked about how a lot of the bucks he'd seen
- 52:55Speaker 1: in the past it's stuck closer to the river right
- 52:57Speaker 1: in like this willow brush more than you might spect um.
- 53:01Speaker 1: So part of me wonders if when I was hunting
- 53:03Speaker 1: their last year or glassing their last year, I was
- 53:06Speaker 1: just missing these deer that are right in the edge
- 53:08Speaker 1: of the river working in that thick stuff. Like I'm
- 53:10Speaker 1: talking like maybe it's ten yards on either side of
- 53:12Speaker 1: the river, but it's thick, and so they might have
- 53:15Speaker 1: been just working parallel to the river and you wouldn't
- 53:17Speaker 1: see them unless you were actually down in the river bottom.
- 53:20Speaker 1: And uh, I want to explore that idea too, and
- 53:24Speaker 1: not right stuff off too quickly. But that's it. It's
- 53:26Speaker 1: gonna be spotting. Then I see something, I'm gonna move
- 53:30Speaker 1: in for the kill. Um and then if that doesn't
- 53:33Speaker 1: work out, it for day or two, then I'll probably
- 53:34Speaker 1: retreat back, try to spot another area, try to locate
- 53:37Speaker 1: something moving a lot of observation sits, and then moving
- 53:39Speaker 1: for the kill, observation ship moving for the kill, and
- 53:42Speaker 1: do that for seven days and hopefully get close enough
- 53:45Speaker 1: to one eventually. Is this a tag that you can
- 53:49Speaker 1: if you run into a mule deer buck you can
- 53:51Speaker 1: shoot one of those two? No, this is white tail only, okay,
- 53:56Speaker 1: but that's fine with me. Yeah, that's awesome. And I'm
- 54:00Speaker 1: a sucker for the white tails. Yeah, yeah, it's it's
- 54:03Speaker 1: just a fun it's a fun way to hunt. So
- 54:06Speaker 1: they're so visible. There's a big, wide open landscapes and
- 54:10Speaker 1: just the prettiest country you could ever ask for. So yeah,
- 54:13Speaker 1: and in solo. I mean I've done a hand for
- 54:15Speaker 1: quite a few of these solo trips. Now it's it's
- 54:17Speaker 1: at times it seems like it's lonely, but other times
- 54:20Speaker 1: like I really like, you know, you just hike in hunt,
- 54:23Speaker 1: hike back to the truck. It's dark. You get back
- 54:25Speaker 1: to the truck, I just crack a beer or drink
- 54:27Speaker 1: or something sitting the tailgate. It's dark, there's nothing but
- 54:30Speaker 1: the stars out. Just kind of be able to sit
- 54:32Speaker 1: there with your thoughts and sleeping, sleeping back, wake up
- 54:35Speaker 1: early the next morning, get perched up on a ledge
- 54:38Speaker 1: with some coffee and glass whole valley and do that
- 54:42Speaker 1: for a week. You kind of refine yourself. I think
- 54:45Speaker 1: kind of brings you back down to to your center.
- 54:49Speaker 1: So I'll tell you one of that was one of
- 54:52Speaker 1: my favorite things about hunting um in Nebraska, when I
- 54:56Speaker 1: went out there in the sand hills and I assuming
- 55:00Speaker 1: it's gonna be a little bit like this with South
- 55:02Speaker 1: Dakota is just the vastness and being able to see
- 55:05Speaker 1: a long ways with no manmade structures. It makes you
- 55:10Speaker 1: kind of realize how small and insignificant that we are
- 55:15Speaker 1: in this whole grand scheme of things, right, how small?
- 55:18Speaker 1: Like in Iowa, there's trees everywhere right hunt you can't
- 55:21Speaker 1: you can't necessarily see a long ways unless you get
- 55:24Speaker 1: out west of the state or to a high point.
- 55:27Speaker 1: But like out there, you can see until you can't
- 55:30Speaker 1: see any anymore, if that makes sense. Like your eyes,
- 55:34Speaker 1: your eyes don't have the ability to see further than
- 55:36Speaker 1: what they're seeing. And that makes me feel small and
- 55:40Speaker 1: I love that feeling. I'm absolutely right there with you,
- 55:45Speaker 1: definitely definitely love those wide open vistas and uh and
- 55:50Speaker 1: kind of feeling insignificant in the bigger scheme of things.
- 55:54Speaker 1: So with that said, let's wrap this up with one
- 56:00Speaker 1: alreading word of advice to all of our fellow hunters listening.
- 56:04Speaker 1: There's seasons. Everyone's seasons are kicking off here soon. So
- 56:07Speaker 1: this is our our parting words to take into your
- 56:10Speaker 1: first huns of the year. Dan, what do you want
- 56:13Speaker 1: to leave folks with? It's it's dude, It's easy, have fun,
- 56:17Speaker 1: like we think about this all the time, like all
- 56:22Speaker 1: the time, and I've kind of realized over the past
- 56:27Speaker 1: couple of years, is if you're if you are putting
- 56:30Speaker 1: any additional pressure on yourself to do anything that has
- 56:33Speaker 1: to do with killing this an animal. Sometimes pressure is good.
- 56:36Speaker 1: Sometimes you need that little kick in the butt to
- 56:38Speaker 1: go accomplish something like movie tree standard whatnot. But overall,
- 56:43Speaker 1: it's got to be fun like. And for me, I
- 56:46Speaker 1: just love doing this from my fun standpoint that I
- 56:50Speaker 1: just want everybody to like take a deep breath and
- 56:53Speaker 1: just realize why we do this. And I think that
- 56:55Speaker 1: the older I get and the more I do it,
- 56:58Speaker 1: it's not about inches and it's not about even age class.
- 57:03Speaker 1: Those are things that I look for, but it's not
- 57:05Speaker 1: why I do it. And if you can, if you
- 57:09Speaker 1: can just embrace that that feeling, I think you're going
- 57:12Speaker 1: to have a lot more fun in the woods. Very
- 57:15Speaker 1: very wise words. I will jump off of that with
- 57:20Speaker 1: the kind of the opposite advice, but but but no, no,
- 57:27Speaker 1: what I would say is definitely have fun, but realize
- 57:32Speaker 1: that it's not always going to be fun like. Stuff
- 57:35Speaker 1: will go wrong. So my advice will be when the
- 57:39Speaker 1: ship hits the fan, when something inevitably goes wrong, when
- 57:43Speaker 1: you missed that buck of a lifetime, when you get
- 57:46Speaker 1: your tree stand stolen, when someone trespasses and blows up
- 57:50Speaker 1: the farm. Just remember that everyone has that stuff happen,
- 57:56Speaker 1: the best hunters out there, It happens to them all.
- 57:59Speaker 1: It's the people that push through it that eventually reach
- 58:03Speaker 1: their goal. So just know, like, all right, that happened.
- 58:05Speaker 1: As quickly as you can, let that water pass under
- 58:08Speaker 1: the bridge, and you move on and take that next
- 58:10Speaker 1: step more quickly, you can get to having fun again.
- 58:13Speaker 1: Do not let that stuff break you. It's so easy
- 58:16Speaker 1: for that stuff to stress you out and take the
- 58:19Speaker 1: fun out of it. I've been there. I think you
- 58:21Speaker 1: have two damn where something goes wrong and your plans
- 58:24Speaker 1: get screwed up and you're not reaching your goals and
- 58:26Speaker 1: you're not seeing the bucks and you've hunted seven days
- 58:28Speaker 1: straight and you're miserable and like, man, screw this ship,
- 58:31Speaker 1: and then you want to give up. Try to as
- 58:35Speaker 1: quickly as possible when that crappy stuff happens, like recognize that,
- 58:39Speaker 1: all right, that sucked. That was a huge bummer, But
- 58:42Speaker 1: I'm not going to let that impact me from this
- 58:45Speaker 1: point forward. At that point, then you gotta let go.
- 58:47Speaker 1: You gotta stop pointing back to you gotta stop blaming it,
- 58:49Speaker 1: you gotta stop letting that thing hang over you. And
- 58:53Speaker 1: instead it's okay, Now, what can I do next? What's
- 58:55Speaker 1: the next step I can take to move back towards
- 58:57Speaker 1: that fun thing, to move back towards that goal had
- 59:01Speaker 1: And I think that that will lead to type too. Fun.
- 59:05Speaker 1: So in the moment, you're pushing through some crap, but
- 59:08Speaker 1: if you push through it and you make it to
- 59:09Speaker 1: the other side, it will be really fun looking back
- 59:13Speaker 1: and knowing that you were able to get through it
- 59:15Speaker 1: and you maybe you accomplish your goal, maybe you killed
- 59:18Speaker 1: that deer or whatever it is you're trying to do.
- 59:20Speaker 1: Maybe it didn't, but it will still be fun to
- 59:22Speaker 1: be able to look back and say, dang it, I
- 59:24Speaker 1: left it all on the field, I gave it my best,
- 59:27Speaker 1: and that was a pretty cool thing too. So that
- 59:29Speaker 1: would be that would be my suggestion. Keep keep all
- 59:33Speaker 1: that in mind, get after it, and have a damn
- 59:37Speaker 1: good time. Amen. Amen, Well, good luck on your North
- 59:42Speaker 1: Dakota hunt. Man Um keep me posted. Thank you, Dan,
- 59:45Speaker 1: good luck on your Elk hunt. I will probably not
- 59:47Speaker 1: be home before you leave, so this is goodbye for
- 59:51Speaker 1: both of us. I hope we returned safely, and let's
- 59:56Speaker 1: record a podcast after each of our hunts and share
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: our wild success stories. Right, Hey, I like that fingers crossed? Hey,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: I take that? Uh what, I can't do that, buddy, Okay,
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: let's try toes crossed to cross? Dan, you just imagine
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: if you could cross your toes, you'd have some long
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: ass toes. Man, you can't cross your toes. I'm crossing
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: my toes right now. Must have some I do have
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: long time. My wife says I have finger toes. That's gross.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: I just imagine how long you're okay, shut it down
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: and that's a rap? How long? My what is? And
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: that is a rap? Hope you enjoyed this one. Um.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: Both Dan and I obviously are very excited for the
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: first hunts of the year, and as you're listening to this,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: my hunts actually in the middle or possibly wrapping up
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: here very soon, so I will have reports for you
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: very shortly. Um, if you haven't been already following on
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: on wire Hunt's Instagram account, and definitely check that out
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: because I'm hosting daily updates there as I go along,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: letting you know everything that's happening. So until next time,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: best of luck if you are out there hunting too,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: and until next time, stay wired to hunt.
