- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. The federal Conservatives are calling on Ottawa
- 0:04Speaker 1: to extend its gas tax holiday. In April, the federal
- 0:09Speaker 1: government announced it's temporarily suspending the fuel excise tax to
- 0:13Speaker 1: help Canadians with the rising cost of gas and diesel.
- 0:16Speaker 1: The pause is in effect until Labor Day. While in
- 0:19Speaker 1: Saint John's last week, Leader Pierre Poliev says people in
- 0:22Speaker 1: Newfoundland and Labrador are still struggling with the high price
- 0:26Speaker 1: of fuel. He believes that's contributed to the high price
- 0:29Speaker 1: of groceries and other goods in the province.
- 0:32Speaker 2: On behalf of all Conservatives, I am officially calling on
- 0:36Speaker 2: Mark Carney to cancel his planned gas tax hike in September.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Canadians cannot afford yet another ten cents a leader at
- 0:44Speaker 2: the pump. Cancel the hike, mister Carney, and leave and
- 0:48Speaker 2: get rid of all gas taxes for all of the year.
- 0:52Speaker 2: To save Canadians twenty five cents a leader, twenty bucks
- 0:55Speaker 2: a fillip, and five hundred dollars by Christmas.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Porter Airlines as a flight was canceled last week after
- 1:02Speaker 1: a child refused to buckle up. Don Mitchell, reports.
- 1:06Speaker 3: An airline spokesman says in an email that its plane
- 1:08Speaker 3: left the terminal in Victoria on Thursday and was headed
- 1:12Speaker 3: to the runway for departure to Toronto. However, a young
- 1:15Speaker 3: child was standing in their seat and would not secure
- 1:18Speaker 3: their seat belt, in what the airline caused an unsafe situation.
- 1:22Speaker 3: The crew elected to return to the terminal and have
- 1:24Speaker 3: the two passengers disembark. It added that the time needed
- 1:27Speaker 3: to bridge the aircraft to plan the duo retreat baggage,
- 1:31Speaker 3: and submit new flight plans, and it was too late
- 1:33Speaker 3: to depart since the runway closes at twelve thirty am.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Passengers had to wait for another flight later the next day.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Don Mitchell, the Canadian Press work.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Is underway to have a Saint John's welcome sign situated
- 1:46Speaker 1: outside Mary Brown Center as a way to help residents
- 1:49Speaker 1: form an opinion on where it should be placed for good.
- 1:52Speaker 1: The eighty thousand dollars sign has been sitting in storage
- 1:56Speaker 1: for the last year after plans to erect it in
- 1:58Speaker 1: Bannerman Park were shot down by the public. Mayor Danny
- 2:02Speaker 1: Breen says it will be going outside the Mary Brown
- 2:04Speaker 1: Center for now while they await feedback from residents on
- 2:07Speaker 1: a permanent location.
- 2:09Speaker 4: We felt the better that if we were able to
- 2:12Speaker 4: install it somewhere so people could actually see the sign,
- 2:15Speaker 4: see how it works, see what's involved in it, and
- 2:19Speaker 4: see why some of the things that we laid out
- 2:21Speaker 4: as qualities that we wanted to see in the space
- 2:24Speaker 4: where it could be located are important. So we've done that.
- 2:29Speaker 4: I expect the next couple of days so we will
- 2:31Speaker 4: be installed there and the people can begin to pick
- 2:35Speaker 4: their comments on or engagement.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Any feedback can be submitted through Engage Saint John's until
- 2:41Speaker 1: September eighteenth. The UK and France are preparing for another
- 2:46Speaker 1: heat wave as western Europe sets new temperature records. Both
- 2:50Speaker 1: countries have put out heat related warnings as temperatures are
- 2:53Speaker 1: forecast to climb to thirty six celsius later this week.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Across Europe. The extreme heat began in May and has
- 3:00Speaker 1: contributed to major wildfires, prolonged drought, and new national temperature records,
- 3:05Speaker 1: as well as thousands of projected heat related deaths. That's
- 3:09Speaker 1: your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
