Transcript
- 0:00Hey there we are back. I don't know how long it's been
- 0:04Dylan. Maybe a few weeks, maybe it's
- 0:05maybe it's even been a month, but we are back with another
- 0:08turn. Back the clock, Adam from
- 0:10Splendid Sports. This is Dylan Double D Vintage
- 0:12baseball cards. And Dylan, how you doing?
- 0:16Doing fantastic, Adam. Stoked to be here.
- 0:17Yeah, it's probably been a month.
- 0:19Been looking forward to talking to you.
- 0:21It's been hit or miss with both of our schedules.
- 0:25Yeah. So I'm I'm pumped up.
- 0:27Yeah, I mean, and that that we're we're like wild cards here
- 0:29on the sports card clubhouse. Like like when we started this
- 0:32thing, you know, going into it, Mike and Greg, you know, they
- 0:36were well aware that like we're not going to be like regimented
- 0:39and and like they, I mean they they're unbelievable how they
- 0:41produce their man on point and they don't do this full time or
- 0:44anything either like some other creators do.
- 0:47So I give them credit 'cause they they never miss an episode
- 0:50or even if they do, they have a fill in.
- 0:52Whereas we're just kind of, you know, we're just, we're just
- 0:55wild, we're wild cards out here and whenever we can do it, we do
- 0:59it. I think we're going to have this
- 1:00one and then they'll be another one in two weeks.
- 1:02So that will be a set schedule. But after that, you know, we'll
- 1:05see. Hopefully we'll be rocking and
- 1:06rolling every two weeks. But we got a couple things I
- 1:09want to talk about today. The first one being I went to a
- 1:14card show pretty recently. So I have some, I don't know if
- 1:18they call them hot takes or whatever, but I have some
- 1:20opinions on, on experience at card shows and this one in
- 1:24particular that I want to run by you and get your thoughts on.
- 1:27And then at the end, of course, we, you know, we haven't touched
- 1:32on the, the shield bidding Dr. Beckett thing.
- 1:35So I, I think we'll come at a little different angle than
- 1:37maybe some others have and at least I will, but we want to
- 1:41definitely touch on that and talk for a little bit about
- 1:43that. So yeah, let's, let's start with
- 1:47the card show. So I, I don't know when it was,
- 1:50it was a couple few weeks ago. I, I hadn't been to a card show
- 1:52in a long time, but I went to the Shriners card show in
- 1:57Wilmington, MA. And the reason I went is because
- 2:02there was a lot of other Youtubers that were going and
- 2:06you know, like Mike junk wax hero, Shane shoebox legends.
- 2:11I, I got a chance to meet him, which was awesome.
- 2:14So like, that was what really brought me to the card show and
- 2:18that it was just awesome meeting those guys and, and hanging out
- 2:21for a little bit. But you know, what I, what I
- 2:25wanted to kind of really talk about on that is Mike mentioned
- 2:28this a little bit and it was funny cuz when he said it, I, it
- 2:30was already in my head. Like at the card show.
- 2:33I, I only got 1 card at the whole card show and it was a
- 2:36card that I had already bought and the, the dealer was just
- 2:39bringing it to the show. So I really didn't buy anything
- 2:42at the show the whole time. I, you know, I walked around, I
- 2:44tried, but for me, I think I don't really have a lot of cards
- 2:50that I want to buy at this point that you're going to see at a
- 2:54card show. You know what I'm I'm looking
- 2:55for. I was looking for like the rare
- 2:57Pedro Martinez card in the in the, in the boxes.
- 3:00And so I didn't find anything like that or maybe a Larry Bird
- 3:03card I hadn't had before. But you know, and the vintage
- 3:07cards kind of like we got, you know, they this they had some
- 3:10awesome cards there, but they just didn't have the I appeal I
- 3:14was looking for. Or maybe I already had them.
- 3:16I think I said to to Shane as we were walking around.
- 3:19I was like, you know, if I came to the show like 3 years ago,
- 3:22I'd be going crazy. I'd be buying everything.
- 3:24But I'd had bought so many cards over the last few years that
- 3:29pretty much everything I saw either already had or it didn't
- 3:31like meet what I was looking for, you know?
- 3:33So I guess I'm pretty particular too with this type of thing.
- 3:37So for me, at least I the card show, going to a card show is
- 3:40just going to all all be about the social aspect of it meeting
- 3:44up with if it's an opportunity to meet with other people.
- 3:47But I don't know what what would be like if you were if you could
- 3:50go to another card show. I know you don't have many in
- 3:52your area, but if like we would you be interested in doing that
- 3:55at this point? You think you would buy a lot
- 3:57like you did at that national that we both went to in 2023.
- 4:01You got a a decent amount there. Would it be different now you
- 4:04think? Or what do you?
- 4:05What do you? Yeah, it would be different, but
- 4:08I, I, for one, 'cause I don't have card shows, right?
- 4:11I They're like walking into Toys-R-Us when you're a kid and
- 4:15you go through the sliding doors.
- 4:17And the long? Hallway and then Toys-R-Us opens
- 4:20up. It's like it's a magical feeling
- 4:23and I don't think that's ever going to go.
- 4:27Away. Even if I had a card show, you
- 4:29know, across the street every single weekend and there's guys
- 4:34talking about like small, small shows or 200 tables.
- 4:37I'm like 200 tables. I would die for 200 tables.
- 4:41I got 1. Table at this at our local
- 4:44little show once a month here. And he's got like, there's six,
- 4:49there's nothing. There's nothing.
- 4:50I know exactly what card every guy has.
- 4:55I for one. For that feeling alone that
- 4:59would get me to every single card show and knowing that there
- 5:02could be one card there, that really strikes me.
- 5:07But I do remember Last National when I went I, it's a running
- 5:12joke. Blue Rock always talks about it.
- 5:14I came back to the house and I go, man.
- 5:16There were two centered baseball cards, tops baseball cards at
- 5:21the entire national and I and I bought.
- 5:23Both of them. So what you're saying about
- 5:26being picky and not, you know, not finding the right copies of
- 5:31certain cards and trying to find a card in general, it's getting
- 5:35extremely difficult. And it, and it is funny because
- 5:38the first national I went to, I came home and I probably had 15
- 5:43cards. And so it wasn't that difficult
- 5:46and I was on the center and kick, but I wasn't that strict.
- 5:49I wasn't that focused. And I was when I just sold off
- 5:53all my sevens, like millions of cards.
- 5:54So I had money to play with, had cards I could pick up.
- 5:58Fast forward, you know, on YouTube, three years.
- 6:02Collecting with friends. Really focusing on my collecting
- 6:05goals and my certain things more.
- 6:09Man, I would struggle big time to find a card that suits my eye
- 6:13and suits my price and suits. All the things that I need.
- 6:16At a card show. But with that said, I can't ever
- 6:22see myself getting sick of going and even.
- 6:25If I was going by myself and I didn't even have friends to hang
- 6:28out with, when I'm at a card show, I really don't talk to
- 6:31anybody. I'm kind of like Mike Junk Wax
- 6:33Hero. Like I'm a solo session guy
- 6:36except for a few guys that like Cart Ken, Candy Man Ken, Ken's
- 6:41cardboard, me and him. Really, we we hit it off when we
- 6:45walk around the shows together. You it's kind of like find, you
- 6:48know, finding your wife and being able to do things with
- 6:51her. Finding the right.
- 6:52Person you do certain things together with but as if if Ken
- 6:55wasn't there. You know, I just go on my own.
- 6:58And wander the floor for six hours by myself.
- 7:01I don't really want to be. I mean, it's cool to be with
- 7:04someone. But it's really hard to because
- 7:07you're just not into the same things and you're like trying to
- 7:11find different things. I, I think like a show that
- 7:15everybody talks about Strongsville, knowing that
- 7:17everyone is around you and you're also by yourself.
- 7:20You can just yell at someone across the room.
- 7:23To me that sounds like best of all worlds.
- 7:25I get to look mostly. Likely I'll find a card I want.
- 7:29All my friends are within earshot and eye vision of me.
- 7:33Kind of just hits all the things and when.
- 7:35You were at that show and I heard.
- 7:37You know I know our buddy Shane. Was there I I've been trying to
- 7:42get Shane to go to the national, you know every.
- 7:44Year I was going. That's a guy I.
- 7:46Really really want to meet like if.
- 7:49More than anyone in the entire hobby that I have not met, I
- 7:53want to meet Shane face to face. So when you guys got a.
- 7:57Seat when you hung out with. Them, or at least saw him.
- 7:59I was so jealous. I was like, oh, if I could just
- 8:02you guys are always whining about, you know, there's so card
- 8:05shows over here, everyone's talking.
- 8:07I'm like you guys have no. Idea I am literally on an
- 8:11island, you know, like. Everyone I've met from from
- 8:14YouTube, Shane was cooler than even you'd think he would be.
- 8:17You know, he's like, everyone lives up to, you know, I've
- 8:20never been like, oh man, they're, they're way different
- 8:22in person or whatever. So, yeah, it was great hanging
- 8:24out with, I mean, and it was, you know, there's a whole list
- 8:27of people that I I'm sure everyone by now has seen who was
- 8:29there and you know, Dan, Dan's vintage baseball PC and Dom's
- 8:34David's sports cars and Jake whack whacks pack wisdom.
- 8:37I mean, there was just a bunch of people there and it was great
- 8:39to meet most of them for the first time.
- 8:42Really. So it was, it was a good
- 8:44experience and I'm glad I went and I'll, I'll go again.
- 8:47You know, I just, I guess my, I was a little like going in.
- 8:51I was like, all right, I brought some cards like I brought, I
- 8:54went through my collection and I picked out.
- 8:56It was about 5 pretty valuable cards that I, I was like, I'm
- 9:01going to either sell these or I'm going to bring them to the
- 9:04show and maybe I'll like work a deal with a dealer.
- 9:07I'll try to sell it to a dealer or a trade or something like
- 9:10that. So I brought them with me.
- 9:11I have my backpack and everything.
- 9:12And then when I get there, I don't know if I'm lazy or what,
- 9:14or I just, I, I get like, I'm just not, I'm not used to it,
- 9:18right? Like I, it's weird.
- 9:19I don't go to any. So like, and it was kind of
- 9:21crowded. So like, you know, there's not a
- 9:23lot of room to maneuver sometimes And like you're look,
- 9:25trying to look through something and someone's next to you, you
- 9:28know, and you know, but the point is like, I didn't end up
- 9:31doing any of that. Guess what I did?
- 9:33I was like, at the end, I was like, well, I still got these
- 9:35cards. So I did, I was, I didn't have
- 9:37the energy or the whatever to try to make a deal with any of
- 9:40these dealers. So I I just did.
- 9:43You sell you a repacker. No, I did a mystery pack.
- 9:47No, what I did is I went to four sharp corners and I consigned
- 9:52them. I just went right.
- 9:53Yeah, I was like whatever I was 1 was a a Yaz rookie PSA 7/19/60
- 10:01Yaz Rook. Another one was a Bill Walton
- 10:05rookie PSA 8. So it was like, you know, higher
- 10:07grade stuff that, you know, I'll, I'm, I'm thinking probably
- 10:10at least get like 4 grand for everything.
- 10:12I can sign that. Actually, they're up for auction
- 10:14now and I won't be bidding on any of my own cards just so
- 10:17everyone knows. But I was like, I, I guess I'm
- 10:20just lazy because I was like, you know what, instead of trying
- 10:22to like work all these deals or whatever, I was like, I didn't
- 10:25see anything I really wanted to buy.
- 10:27So I was like, here, we just can sign these.
- 10:29And it, it was good. So it got me thinking like for
- 10:31someone like me, I see other, I mean, I'll go to these card
- 10:35shows just to to meet up with guys, you know, the social
- 10:37aspect. Even if I don't buy anything,
- 10:39it's worth it for me. But if I'm going to go to a card
- 10:41show, someone like me, I am looking more and I don't know if
- 10:44this could go out to any of the the card show promoters or
- 10:47anything like that, but I'd be very interested.
- 10:50Like I'm looking to like consign cards to like if PSA can get at
- 10:56some of these shows. Like I would love to take some
- 10:59of these older slab PSA cards or even some SGC ones and try to
- 11:03cross them over or submit them 'cause like I don't wanna send
- 11:07any of these cards in the mail right now with everything I'm
- 11:09hearing, right? So like I have a big interest if
- 11:12I can go to some of these shows and actually like instead of
- 11:15even even buying a lot of stuff, using it to like grade cards or
- 11:20you know, change, upgrade the slab or whatever to the newer
- 11:23slab from some of these older ones crying trying to crossover
- 11:27consign like that. That's the type of thing that
- 11:30where I'm at with my collection, I'm I'm more in that mode where
- 11:33instead of like even acquiring new stuff, I'm trying to like, I
- 11:36guess optimize what I have already.
- 11:39So I see a lot of value in that at going to card shows because
- 11:42the more I do it, like I again, I, I, I, I would rather do that
- 11:45stuff in person right now if I can.
- 11:47I, I don't really want to ship valuable cards to PSA or to
- 11:52really anything right now. I just, I've kind of lost
- 11:54confidence in that. Nothing's ever happened to me.
- 11:56But I've seen so much with like lost packages and, and all the
- 12:01stuff that I see a lot of value if like PSA or some of these
- 12:05companies can get more regional, like, you know, have like a
- 12:09branch almost in some of these bigger cities where you could do
- 12:13that in person. I think that would, that would
- 12:15be pretty valuable. That'd be something that I'd I'd
- 12:17be interested in doing so. No, I love it and and the whole
- 12:21thing like bringing cards to trade in a card show.
- 12:25Dude, the first national I went to, I had a whole box of cards
- 12:28and it it's embarrassing. I I'm definitely not a guy.
- 12:31Who, you know, can go around and film card shows like, dude, I'm
- 12:36not taking my camera out. I'm not, I'd be, I'd be sweaty
- 12:39and I'd be so embarrassed. And so I feel so weird about it.
- 12:43And that goes for like bringing a box of cards and going to a
- 12:46dealer and handing your box of cards and be like, do you want
- 12:49any of my baseball cards? Can you trade?
- 12:51You know, dude, So I did that at the First National, man, I'm
- 12:54like, I'm. Just going to do it.
- 12:55I flew. Across the country I went to
- 12:57every single table at that national and only one guy.
- 13:02Was willing to trade with me for.
- 13:05The cards that I had and he and that was when I got the 52 bow
- 13:08Mickey Mouse, the greatest trade, greatest trade of my
- 13:11whole life value for value. I was I was trading leaders
- 13:15cards a whole stack of low cards for one big card and I got full
- 13:20comps like all the way equal. It was, it blew my mind, but I
- 13:25literally wasted 8 hours just taking these cards that every
- 13:30single dealer when for me like Greg text me like a month ago or
- 13:35something because I just sold off 100 cards and he's like why
- 13:39don't you just sell them on your channel?
- 13:41And I'm going dude, the. Last thing I ever want to do is
- 13:45sell them on my channel and have to e-mail someone back and forth
- 13:49non-stop to get one card when I can take them all, put them,
- 13:53give them to a consignor, pay whatever fee it is going to be.
- 13:57I sent them all to Greg Morris and some to Fanatics and I I
- 14:00don't have to do anything. I did a pack all them up 1.
- 14:03Time and like you said, if you had a card show, you can go over
- 14:06and just drop them off straight to the people.
- 14:09It it's worth the money. But with that said, I have
- 14:13decided I'm going to be selling some cards on my channel.
- 14:15Which is funny because I I am that's a for a future thing, but
- 14:19I have a stack. Going.
- 14:21I'm going to do. That, but I don't, it's not
- 14:25going to be something that I enjoy like emailing people back.
- 14:28So I have to figure out a, a solution, a way to do it.
- 14:32And yeah, card show to bring in a box of cards and hand them to
- 14:35a consignor. That would be if, man, I would
- 14:37do that all the time. It was really easy because, you
- 14:40know, I've used, I've used four shop cards before.
- 14:42I, I was always like kind of like, I don't know, the
- 14:44consignment thing, like I was like, I could just do it myself,
- 14:47right? Like I just put it up on my own
- 14:49eBay and, and then I've kind, I was like, yeah, if I'm selling,
- 14:52like if it's just one car, that's one thing 'cause it's
- 14:55about the same amount of work really, you know, to, to just
- 14:58ship a car. But if you're selling like like
- 15:00even 5 like this, it's way easier to just put them all in
- 15:04the one box and send them to the and they'll do everything else.
- 15:07And let alone if it's a bunch of cards.
- 15:09So, and it's the same with like again, these consigners, they
- 15:14sell them on eBay and it's like lower percentage than you'd pay
- 15:19selling them yourself on eBay. So it really makes a lot of
- 15:22sense to do that. And again, if I can do that in
- 15:26person, I'm all for it 'cause like, yeah, I just don't wanna,
- 15:31I'm not cool with shipping stuff right now unless, unless I have
- 15:34to. So, yeah, if I could do, if I
- 15:36could do these like grading things and, and, and selling
- 15:39cards in person, handing them off that, that for me, that's
- 15:42that's worth the drive up right there to a card show and the
- 15:45price of admission, 15 bucks or whatever it was to get in the
- 15:48car, even if I don't buy anything.
- 15:49But I just do that. And then also obviously if if
- 15:53there's any type of like meet up or anything, it's it's cool,
- 15:55it's fun and it was a good card show.
- 15:57I mean, it was very crowded and it was, it was funny because the
- 16:02one I was walking around and like, to your point, I have a
- 16:05hard time multitasking. So like, if I'm trying to look
- 16:08at cards, I have a hard time focusing on like having a
- 16:11conversation with someone. But I, we're just, Shane and I
- 16:13were walking around and like looking through tables and
- 16:15really just wasn't finding anything.
- 16:17And then I'm just looking down like I don't even know whose
- 16:19table. And then I'm looking like, oh,
- 16:21look at, oh, man, I'm like, look at this.
- 16:23Like it was a Larry Bird card, like a patch card that I, I knew
- 16:28right away. Like, oh, I like that.
- 16:29Like that would be something. And then I look up, I'm like how
- 16:31much? How much for this Larry Bird
- 16:34card? And I look up and it's on the
- 16:36guys like those aren't for sale. It was Heritage Auctions and
- 16:39he's like those. Are in our.
- 16:41Yeah, like those are going to be in our blah blah blah elite show
- 16:44kit, whatever it is. I'm like, oh, OK.
- 16:46I was like, sorry, I didn't. I thought you were just a deal.
- 16:48So like I was just in the zone. But then like, so it was like
- 16:51the only cards I really would have bought at that show were
- 16:54ones I can't buy, you know? So it was just, and that's just
- 16:57me, like just where I'm at and how I collect now.
- 17:01I'm not going for a big collection.
- 17:03I'm very specific. So that's, that was just my my
- 17:07thoughts on it. And then when I heard Mike say
- 17:09that too, you know, Mike was on his channel saying he's very
- 17:12specific on how he collects now. So card shows are really not I I
- 17:17don't know how he put it, but not his thing or whatever.
- 17:19But to his point, it's all worth it when you get to hang out with
- 17:22some guys for a few hours. And I wish I could have, I, I
- 17:25wish I could have gone to the, to the meet up after I, I
- 17:28stopped by for like a minute, but I had to go.
- 17:30But yeah, things like that make it really, really cool, really
- 17:35fun. So I, I, I'll try to do like
- 17:37that. If I could do that even once a
- 17:39year, like locally at a meet up like that, that, that, that's
- 17:42something that I put a lot of value on.
- 17:44So it was a good experience. And I think that's all I have to
- 17:49say about the. Card did you get?
- 17:50Did you you say you got one card?
- 17:52Yeah, you did. It was a Tom Brady.
- 17:55Tom Brady 2001 gold out of 100, he's only got 3 cards.
- 18:01Think about this right? So Tom Brady, I know you're not
- 18:03a football guy, but you appreciate that's what I've been
- 18:06trying to get across. Like a lot of when I talk Tom
- 18:08Brady on YouTube, you know no one.
- 18:10I don't get a lot of views on those and, and it's because you
- 18:12know, it's mostly baseball on YouTube and people hate Tom
- 18:16Brady 'cause he beat their ass for 20 years.
- 18:18So I get it. But what, what my point is like
- 18:21when I talk about my Tom Brady collecting, I hope other people
- 18:25can connect to it, not because of Tom Brady, but because of
- 18:28like the, the collecting ideas that I'm talking about.
- 18:31And then what I, what I'm like going after and runs and so
- 18:34forth. So hopefully it can be applied
- 18:36to any player and, and relate to, But think about this Tom
- 18:40Brady the, the, the GOAT of football.
- 18:43So I think it would be like Otani or Messi or like Michael
- 18:50Jordan, LeBron James, these guys, if that's a good one.
- 18:54LeBron James, his rookie year was 2003.
- 18:57In 2004, I don't know the number, but his second year, I'm
- 19:01guessing he probably had like hundreds of or not hundreds, but
- 19:06maybe 50 different brands of cards that second year.
- 19:09Like, and then probably like thousands of different cards in
- 19:11his second year. Tom Brady had in his second year
- 19:15had three cards. That was 3 brands that put out a
- 19:18card of his because he was not expected to be, He was expected
- 19:22to be a career backup or whatever.
- 19:23So the the card companies didn't make any cards in his in it
- 19:27before he won that Super Bowl other than his rookie year.
- 19:30But his second year's got 3 cards.
- 19:31So I was able to get playoff. It's playoff national treasures.
- 19:36It's real popular now national treasures.
- 19:38But this was like the playoff national treasures, which I
- 19:41think became what it, you know, the, the big brand for Panini,
- 19:45but that's a gold out of 100. And I ended up buying it online
- 19:49a few weeks before that. And I, and I picked it up in
- 19:51person cause again, the dealer I bought it from Kevin the
- 19:54captain, he, he was like, you know, I don't really like
- 19:56shipping these type of cards anymore, even locally.
- 19:59So I was like, well, I'll just pick it up at, at the Shriner
- 20:02show. So it worked out well.
- 20:03But yeah, it's pretty, pretty interesting that a a player of
- 20:07of Brady's magnitude in their second year would only have 3
- 20:10total cards. That's pretty crazy when you
- 20:12think about it. Be like dude that in 2018 having
- 20:15only three cards. Dude, that's mine.
- 20:18Mind boggling. And and Adam, I, I, I get
- 20:21inspired by you all the time. I don't.
- 20:23I get inspired by Chris Hoge. I can inspire.
- 20:27I could name hundreds of guys who do not collect how I collect
- 20:31or what I collect, but it's those thoughts, it's those
- 20:34ideas, it's the concepts, it's how they think about collecting
- 20:37itself. We know we, you know, our buddy
- 20:40Dave, Iowa Dave, he listens to that podcast about collecting in
- 20:45it all different collecting things, not even baseball stuff.
- 20:49I haven't tried that podcast out, but I imagine I would love
- 20:53it because it's it's really. It.
- 20:55Gives it just a different perspective on how, like you
- 20:58say, I could find another way to collect a certain guy.
- 21:01And copy how you're doing, but with Brady.
- 21:03Getting inspired me like wow, he did it with that.
- 21:05I'm going to try and collect. Every rookie of this player you
- 21:09know Ichiro like. It's it's.
- 21:11Possible. So yeah, I, I love it, man.
- 21:15I and for me, it's more about. The the coolest thing is like
- 21:19it's almost less about the player and more about like the
- 21:23the story of the hobby at the time and the brands and, and,
- 21:27and for me, it's more of that like I'm more interested in that
- 21:31than even like Brady so much. It's just you get so deep into
- 21:35it where you start getting more into like, you know, the Pacific
- 21:38cards. And again, he only had three
- 21:40cards in this year. So it's kind of almost in a
- 21:44certain way that the the player becomes like secondary to what
- 21:48you're going after with like how the cards are in the hobby at
- 21:52that point in time. And I find that way more
- 21:54interesting than, you know, Michael Jordan was awesome and
- 21:57and Kobe Bryant, it was awesome. I like hearing more about like,
- 22:01yeah, in their second year they had three cards total because I
- 22:04like those type of stories. Now I'm kind of deep diving on a
- 22:06lot of the stuff with the going back in time.
- 22:08So it's pretty, it's pretty fun. Dude, I love that Adam.
- 22:11So remember when we first started doing this three-year, 3
- 22:15plus years ago or whenever that? Was I just liked I I never
- 22:19thought I would dive into knowing about the cards and I
- 22:23was always like, whatever, you know, that's somebody else's
- 22:25thing. Like how hard I wasn't
- 22:27collecting modern then either but like so in my take.
- 22:30Was like the vintage guys. Like how?
- 22:32Did this come in the pack? I never really cared.
- 22:35I was like whatever, I just want the card.
- 22:37I love the card. It was about the card and even
- 22:41not even about the sport either. But now like collecting this
- 22:45modern stuff and the Japanese collection that I'm creating, I
- 22:49am really digging it. Like you're talking about
- 22:52learning about the card itself. And like me and my Mickey Mantle
- 22:55card number 7 collection, it was like it started out because I
- 23:00wanted to collect the Mickey Mantle because I've been selling
- 23:03them my whole life. And then you got me thinking
- 23:06about the rare ones that turned into learning about the rarity
- 23:09of the card. That turned into learning about
- 23:11card number 7, which I didn't even know, wasn't even a reason
- 23:15for me to collect Mantle. I wasn't even part of it.
- 23:18And then it just snowballs. And now I'm really every card I
- 23:22get. That's why I love making my own
- 23:24labels too, for my cards. I put so much information on
- 23:28there that it tells me every time I pick up that card, I
- 23:32learn about that card. Again and it gets clicked into
- 23:35my. Brain.
- 23:35Anyone that sees my collection can pick up any one of my cards
- 23:39that that's in one of my slabs and know exactly how rare it is,
- 23:42where it came from, a significance of this or that,
- 23:46all kinds of cool stuff. I never.
- 23:48Thought I'd be into that so I'm. With you man, like my mic trout
- 23:51collection, it's like more about the like getting my Bowman
- 23:55Chrome run. And finding, you know, the 2000.
- 23:5817 of his in. In the gold, that's more.
- 24:01Important than getting a mic trout.
- 24:03I want the gold. I want this to fit here.
- 24:06It's it's dude, you said it so well.
- 24:09It's exactly, exactly what I love.
- 24:12So it is becoming less about I mean.
- 24:15I still love the players, you know, we still love the players.
- 24:18Obviously. It's how it starts.
- 24:20You know it. Either starts with loving of
- 24:23collecting, loving of cards, or love of the game.
- 24:27Or love of the players, you know.
- 24:30Oh yeah. Love it.
- 24:31Love it, Adam. All right, so we in the last few
- 24:34minutes here this episode, I kind of I wanted to talk to you
- 24:38about. So I think we're I sent a text
- 24:42to you kind of joking, like if you if you took a break from
- 24:47watching hobby content stuff or like following it on social
- 24:51media for let's say a few weeks, like a few weeks ago, and then
- 24:55you you just started a few days back.
- 24:57You're catching up on things when you left doctor Beckett,
- 25:01you know, on the hobby Mount Rushmore, right, Like I never
- 25:05heard a bad word said about him and you and I have compliment
- 25:07him all those so many times, right.
- 25:10And then you come in and then like all these videos are like,
- 25:13you know, lump and Doctor Beckett in with with shill
- 25:16bidders. And, and I mean, there was some
- 25:18pretty, I've heard some pretty tough things said about Doctor
- 25:22Beckett on YouTube and and and social media and so forth.
- 25:27I think a lot of the people that said a lot of these things
- 25:30probably didn't, it didn't seem like they even listened to the
- 25:33episode. It was kind of like they heard
- 25:34it second hand. And so for me, I was, I was
- 25:39pretty shocked at, although I shouldn't have been because
- 25:41that's kind of my point with this is I was pretty shocked at
- 25:45not Doctor Beckett's episode, but I was more shocked at the
- 25:49response at first from people to that episode, 'cause I listen to
- 25:53it and I, I at first, you know, I, I, I was a little, yeah, I
- 25:57had a few questions so forth. But if you actually listen to
- 26:00the first episode and Doctor Beckett has mentioned this
- 26:03before in a scenario, he was talking about a scenario where
- 26:06he didn't she'll bid, but he he was raising a hypothetical that,
- 26:11you know, it was a tough situation where it was mislisted
- 26:13and it was for a friend. And so he was just kind of
- 26:16posing different, you know, circumstances, right?
- 26:21But and then next thing you know, people are calling him a
- 26:24shell bitter and and lumping him in with people who actually did
- 26:26shell bit and saying all these other things.
- 26:30And you know, I don't really know Doctor Beckett very well.
- 26:33We've been on a few episodes together.
- 26:36I met him in person. He was very nice that time I met
- 26:39him, he signed my back. But even aside from that, it was
- 26:42just like, it's crazy how I personally think that social
- 26:47media and, and people's attention spans, I think, I
- 26:51think society's really going downhill in many ways with, with
- 26:55this stuff. It's, it's crazy how people pile
- 26:57on people now. Like, I mean, back in the day,
- 26:59like I, I, I used to think like before social media, before even
- 27:03the Internet, right? Like people would still like,
- 27:06you know, gossip and talk trash about people and stuff.
- 27:08But now you got people that literally just like in comments
- 27:11are saying things they would never ever say to someone's
- 27:15face, right? But they're just saying these
- 27:17crazy things that a lot of them aren't even true.
- 27:19So I just been thinking a lot about that.
- 27:21Like, I like doing this. Like, come on out here talking.
- 27:24And I, you know, I say stupid things too now and then.
- 27:26But it's just, it was kind of wild for me to just be like, in
- 27:31a matter of like, you know, Doctor Beckett did think about
- 27:35all he did in the hobby for decades, decades and decades.
- 27:38And then he had one episode and all of a sudden now people are
- 27:40like, oh, it's it's over for Doctor Beckett and all this
- 27:43stuff. It was pretty crazy to think
- 27:45like, if that can happen to Doctor Beckett, we're all
- 27:48screwed, man. You know, like no one's got any
- 27:50hope. And I'm doing it.
- 27:52If like someone with that much respect and credibility and
- 27:55built up capital in this hobby can go from in, in a matter of
- 27:59literally like one day can go from where he was to what people
- 28:03are talking about now. And I think that will subside.
- 28:06But it was just nuts to me really to see like, and it's
- 28:09just that it's a sign of where we are with the politics and
- 28:13society and everything. And it's, it's kind of sad in a
- 28:16way. And it makes me want to go away
- 28:19from from social media and a lot of this stuff, honestly.
- 28:22But that's, that's just me. I don't know.
- 28:24What do you think? All right, so you know, I want
- 28:27to give my little take on that whole thing too.
- 28:31I I heard that the first episode first I was pretty baffled why
- 28:35he was on had P Ryan on there and then as as the episode went
- 28:39on what it it wasn't? The thing that shocked me wasn't
- 28:44that Beckett told that story about selling cards for his
- 28:48friend and all that. I had heard that before he said
- 28:51that years ago and I knew that I knew this story.
- 28:53I think he said it like 4 times. At least I've heard him say it
- 28:56A. Lot that wasn't my issue.
- 29:00My issue was that he wasn't. He made it sound like it was
- 29:05just OK for the things that P Ryan did, whether it's a mistake
- 29:10or not. I I thought the whole.
- 29:12Episode was not. He didn't come across well in my
- 29:16opinion, the way he talked. It was a.
- 29:18Lot of lot of people saying how smart they were and I'll combine
- 29:22all three episodes of my brain right now because they all all
- 29:24three episodes that Doctor Beckett put out to me, they just
- 29:29made just he just took the shovel and dug himself deeper
- 29:32and deeper in the hole. And then telling us how smart he
- 29:36is. And I called him God once, you
- 29:38know, on an episode. Of course I'm being ridiculous,
- 29:40right? I'm joking when I say that
- 29:42stuff. But this is serious.
- 29:44And I I do not think Doctor Beckett is a bad.
- 29:48Human. Being I do not think that he's
- 29:51out there she'll beating, I don't think that he needs to
- 29:56does not. Deserve to go to.
- 29:57Jail. In fact, he's not off my totem
- 30:00pole of a respected human. I would, you know, I'll still
- 30:05shake his hand. I'll still say hi to him, you
- 30:09know, did he get knocked off where he was in my brain?
- 30:13I'm more of a disappointment. And I'll still listen to his
- 30:17podcast if he continues on, which I hope he does, and still
- 30:20listen to his opinions. And I'll take them for what they
- 30:24are and what they are, just like ours, their opinions and I.
- 30:28And I respect when he speaks. I've always listened and I.
- 30:31I think he's wise to the hobby. Now I'm not saying he what he
- 30:35did was right. I think she'll bidding is
- 30:39ridiculous. Well.
- 30:40Hold on, let me just let me just get.
- 30:43It when you said he did P Ryan was the one who shelled doctor
- 30:47Becker did not shell bid like that that that's what I agree
- 30:51like and I think doctor Becker would even say like you know
- 30:53that was not a great episode for me.
- 30:55I didn't. Things came off that's.
- 30:56What he should have said, that's what.
- 30:58He should have. I've heard him say that already.
- 31:01Yeah. I guess he he did kind of, yeah.
- 31:03And he? Believe me, he doesn't need I'm
- 31:05not defending anything, but what I'm saying is it was just crazy
- 31:08that to me it was like, you see this a lot, right?
- 31:11Like people this degrees to things like there's a difference
- 31:13between shell actually shell bidding and then giving an
- 31:17opinion on shill bidding is what?
- 31:19And you might say that's a terrible opinion totally just
- 31:21but like go to jail. What are you taught for what?
- 31:25Like what are they people talking about?
- 31:26Like I understand if you're a shill bidder, yes, that I guess
- 31:29that could be illegal, but like sharing opinions in like
- 31:32hypotheticals, That's those are two completely different things.
- 31:35Yet at the end of it, people were lumping them both in
- 31:38together and for me that was crazy.
- 31:40And you see that with other things too, like, you know,
- 31:44without going into other situations in life.
- 31:47But there, there a lot of times it's like, you know, false
- 31:50equivalency out there right now. And that's what I was seeing is
- 31:53like, you know, you totally disagree.
- 31:56Like it's like, for example, you could I could say, you know, in
- 32:00some I think marijuana is not bad.
- 32:04I don't think it's a bad thing, right?
- 32:06But in some states it's illegal. So if I go to Texas where it's
- 32:09illegal and I say, I think smoking marijuana is, is not,
- 32:13not a bad thing, people could say, oh, that am I going to jail
- 32:17because I, I, because it's a, it's against the law in Texas
- 32:19that I shared an opinion. Whereas if you did smoke
- 32:23marijuana in Texas, that's breaking the law, you know, but
- 32:28if I say it shouldn't, it should be legal or I think that's a bad
- 32:31law. That's a completely different
- 32:32thing. You don't go to jail for that.
- 32:33So that that for me, that was like the crazy part.
- 32:36Yeah, I hear you there. But you know.
- 32:38Yeah, yeah. I mean, the world, we've all,
- 32:40what do we love? What does everyone love more
- 32:42than anything? A guy who's at the very top
- 32:45making a mistake and falling all the way to the bottom because
- 32:48everybody who didn't like that person and to begin with is hoot
- 32:51and holler and and saying I never liked.
- 32:54Him. I never cared for him.
- 32:56I always knew there was something wrong.
- 32:59And I just, that's just how it is.
- 33:01It sucks. It is what it is.
- 33:03Like one of us could say something Dumber and no one has
- 33:06this on this pedestal. Exactly.
- 33:07We're at the bottom, so it doesn't matter, right?
- 33:09Only our closest friends. You know, would could think of
- 33:13us differently, right? It is so it's tough, but let me
- 33:17I I'm going to make a I'm going. To make a an opinion here about
- 33:21shell being and how I think things are going so far on the
- 33:24other. End of the spectrum which?
- 33:25Just like dude, all right, so Dan, what's Dan's page is?
- 33:34Dan Dan's vintage baseball PC. Dan's vintage baseball PC.
- 33:39Yeah, the worst. The guy.
- 33:40By the way, meta, Yeah, you. Know great guy love love Dan
- 33:44listen listen to a podcast with him and Dave the day it was so
- 33:46good so yeah so. He he recently they were doing
- 33:52the live auctions and our friend Matt the card story was selling
- 33:56cards, consigning cards at CIA auctions and Dan would not bid
- 34:03on those cards because they are his friends cards.
- 34:06I am I that is not show bidding now what the only way he wasn't
- 34:12offered those cards from Matt. He wasn't Matt didn't call him
- 34:16up and say, Hey, you want to buy these cards.
- 34:18And not even that, but even even if even if Matt called him and
- 34:23said, hey, you want to buy these cards, This is the price.
- 34:26And and you know, Dan's like now I'll pass, let him go at auction
- 34:32and maybe I'll be able to swoop in and get it cheaper.
- 34:34Maybe he doesn't come up with an I don't see anything on.
- 34:37If you want the card of your friends, please, by all means
- 34:41bid it, buy it. That's the whole point, right?
- 34:44Other where would our cards go if they don't go to our other
- 34:47friends? If I can sign my cards to to
- 34:50CIAI hope they do a little thing.
- 34:52Hey, these are these are Dylan's cards.
- 34:55Buy them. It doesn't.
- 34:57That is not a she'll be. If you go on Instagram right
- 35:00now, pretty much half the people I follow, their stories are just
- 35:04them sharing links to their auctions.
- 35:07So it's, it's that's if you. Yeah, that's not chill.
- 35:10Bidding right? Yeah, there's nothing wrong with
- 35:12that. Like so it's the same thing but
- 35:14chill bidding. We we know what it is, it's bad.
- 35:16We're not saying it's. Don't do it.
- 35:18It's not good to do like so that that's there's no just
- 35:21everyone's agreeing agreeing on that.
- 35:22I even heard doctor Beckett say that he was on today.
- 35:25So I don't I don't, I think it's, you know, a little over
- 35:29the whole I think Doctor Beckett had a bad episode there.
- 35:33And but I mean, that was kind of he deserves our.
- 35:37Forgiveness. And if you don't believe in
- 35:40forgiveness, just your acceptance, your acceptance of
- 35:43of just. Him getting lost in his own
- 35:45words. I mean dude, there's things that
- 35:49he said that I thought were straight up dumb.
- 35:52And and it and it it. Made him sound arrogant and
- 35:55cocky. But it doesn't make him a bad.
- 35:58Human being and I, I forgive him, I don't think.
- 36:01He did it, I don't. Think he She'll bid.
- 36:03I know he didn't. She'll bid.
- 36:04And I don't think that he's been out there corrupting us this
- 36:08whole time with the Beckett. And all the Beckett prices were
- 36:11off. No way.
- 36:12If anyone this guy was didn't. Even collect cards during the
- 36:15whole period and he made it clear I I did.
- 36:19No one else in this industry stops collecting cards if they
- 36:21work. For a car company and I don't
- 36:23expect them. To I don't want them to because
- 36:26I want them to understand what's going on in the hobby.
- 36:27So, and I think a lot of it was like.
- 36:30Cuz you know, I don't know how many of the of the people that
- 36:32were sounding off. I mean, I've listened to a lot
- 36:36of his since for probably four years I've listened to his
- 36:39podcast, not every single one, but a lot of them.
- 36:42And so you feel like if you listen to someone that much, you
- 36:47feel like you get a good feel for the person, right?
- 36:49Like, so for me, it was just crazy to be like, man, the the
- 36:53heat he's getting now for that. If, if, if, if people think he's
- 37:00the problem in the hobby, then we then we're all then we're
- 37:04all. Prudent.
- 37:05We're all prudent. That's if that's what you're
- 37:07going after. Doctor Beckett.
- 37:08I mean, there's plenty of other fish to fry, in my opinion, if
- 37:11if that's what you're trying to do.
- 37:13But yeah, if if so, he never every episode I've ever listened
- 37:17to him, he was like he came across as the exact he was
- 37:21completely like he would be above board ethical with
- 37:23everything and like so yeah, he had one bit and then all of a
- 37:26sudden that's all it takes. Like he takes 1 bad episode.
- 37:30I would say it took where it wasn't.
- 37:31Like he was like, Oh yeah, I. She'll bid I she'll bid that he
- 37:34that that's what people were making it out like.
- 37:36Like he confessed to some history of shell bidding or
- 37:39something. He did it.
- 37:40So I don't, I don't know. To me I mean.
- 37:42For me, my own self, it disturbed me a lot of the things
- 37:47that he said as AI don't know if I I guess.
- 37:51Once you're like, once you, once you have P Ryan.
- 37:54On And then you have that conversation and some things got
- 37:57said that were arrogant and cocky and to me sounded like
- 38:02we're all dumb idiots are getting cards I didn't like a
- 38:07lot of. Things that were said and it
- 38:08wasn't and and I just want to. Make sure that I'm not, I'm not
- 38:12offending, I'm not defending P Ryan like I.
- 38:15Don't know him really well. I'm definitely not defending P
- 38:18Ryan. People I don't even know who
- 38:19existed till then, but so a lot of the bad things were from from
- 38:23him. You know, so even Beckett.
- 38:25I mean, I'm I'm. Bummed out I I thought he said
- 38:27some really just really dumb things and.
- 38:30And even saying you're a smart. Person can be dumb just if.
- 38:36I had a lot of more problems. Than maybe how it's coming
- 38:38across so I don't. Want to think people think I'm
- 38:40like, I just forgive them, OK, I forgive and I will move on and I
- 38:45will continue to watch it. Listen to him talk.
- 38:48But I also think that he owes all of us an apology.
- 38:54I think the words that he used at times were inappropriate and
- 38:59that had nothing to do with the show being to me it would just
- 39:03it came across wrong. But I say dumb things all the
- 39:05time, so. Who am I?
- 39:07Who am I to judge? Like I'm like, dude.
- 39:10So there we go. I'm.
- 39:11Sorry, you're not judging. I've said so many stupid.
- 39:13Things, yeah, so yeah, me too. So I guess we made our.
- 39:16We made, you know, we, we said what needed to be said.
- 39:19And, and you know, people aren't going to like me for the things
- 39:23that I've said during this episode.
- 39:25That's fine too. Yeah, that's it.
- 39:29I guess we can put this to bed. I forgive you.
- 39:31I forgive you, Mr. Recker. Yeah, well, that's it.
