- 0:00The question of how to achieve the status of inner equality to
- 0:04all outward circumstances is one that occupies the attention of
- 0:08spiritual seekers everywhere. In his book Bases of Yoga, Sri
- 0:14Aurobindo devotes the 1st chapter to the questions of
- 0:17achieving calm, peace and equality as these are
- 0:22foundational for spiritual development.
- 0:25Some individuals try to establish a philosophical
- 0:28approach based in the mind. They become analytical about
- 0:32situations and work to defuse vital reactions that arise
- 0:37through applying a deeper insight to the situation.
- 0:42Others try a devotional approach that is based on an acceptance
- 0:46of the Divine as doing what is right and necessary in the life
- 0:49of the seeker. Still others try an approach of
- 0:54Stoicism that seeks to employ the active will to manage the
- 0:58vital reactions. Shrioro Bindo recommends in
- 1:02various places and approach of separation of the witness
- 1:05consciousness from the external nature.
- 1:09The witness calmly observes as if anything happening to and
- 1:13with the outer nature is something separate and apart
- 1:18from the standpoint of the witness.
- 1:21Techniques of Raja Yoga as described by Swami Vivekananda
- 1:26include an approach of observing thoughts and sensations as they
- 1:30arise in the mind and not purposely attending to them.
- 1:36This is akin to the approach of the witness consciousness.
- 1:41If the seeker is able to shift the standpoint of the psychic
- 1:44being, the aspiration, consecration and devotion that
- 1:49it has as its normal form of expression help to mitigate
- 1:53reactions based on the ego personality.
- 1:58Whichever approach 1 takes, with regular practice the seeker
- 2:02eventually is able to find a way to reduce the influence of these
- 2:07external impacts. The Mother notes quote to live
- 2:13within in constant aspiration towards the Divine that renders
- 2:19us capable of regarding life with a smile and remaining in
- 2:23peace whatever the external circumstances.
- 2:28Live within, Do not be shaken by external circumstances.
- 2:34He who lives to serve the truth is not affected by outward
- 2:38circumstances. End Quote Reference Srioro Bindu
