- 0:09SPEAKER_01: Hello and welcome to the Deep Track Podcast, an exploration of watches, trends, and culture with a few adventures in between.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Blake Bettner.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: I am in studio today with Superproducer Josh.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: Josh, how are you doing?
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: It's good to see you.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: Doing good, man.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: How are you?
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: I am excellent.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Uh we are we're just coming into the thick of it.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: Uh here we are at the cusp of what is called New York Watch Week.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Whatever that means, uh I feel like it it evolves a little bit uh each year, which is fine.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: So we'll talk about some of that kind of stuff today and what's upcoming and uh some of the releases that have caught our eye recently uh and what they mean to us.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: And finally, maybe we'll get into uh maybe Rolex spreading their wings a little bit and and with with a new point of view uh with that uh what is it, 1908 perpetual calendar?
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: But it's not a perpetual calendar, it's an annual calendar.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: I forget the exact name of it.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: But they're they're they're they're doing something that's a little bit I it may not unexpected, but um it's kind of like outside of like their core lane, I think.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Um and I like to see it.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it it's it's cool, right?
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: It's it's well I've got I've got one little niggle with the design, but but we'll get we'll get there before we get into any of that.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Uh what do you got on your wrist today, man?
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Um I'm wearing my Casio Timber Cruiser.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: Are you familiar with what a Timber Cruiser is?
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: Aaron Powell That's maybe like the coolest name.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: It sounds like the Timber Cruiser.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Do you watch do you watch Bob's burgers?
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: I used to, but and I don't recall much.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: There's a there's a there's an episode where he's like real hot to get this turkey that uh because Thanksgiving is his favorite holiday.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: And then the kind of made-up name for this like Lux turkey place that they came up with is Riverbook Riverbrook Lake Farms.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: So it's all this kind of like that sounds like a similar kind of level of word play here.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: This is like um well, so for people who don't know, um and I and I'm hoping I'm remembering this correctly, a timber cruiser is essentially a person that goes out into the forest.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: I don't remember whether they work for like a timber company, but essentially they go out into the forest and they are like the appraisers of trees to try to figure out what trees I think are worth cutting down to turn into different types of timber.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: So um but apparently a timber not in the good kind of way of raising trees.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: And apparently, um, if you're a timber cruiser, you need um a second time zone and you somehow need a chronograph.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: You also need a dive bezel.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: Um you're ready to roll, right?
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: That's so that's cool.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: That also like kind of fits in with what I want to talk about uh to today today.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: Uh a little bit.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm wearing a GMT.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: I've been bouncing around all day, and I've got uh more like errands to run after this.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: And I've been just kind of like tossing this on without really thinking much about it a lot, like over the past few weeks.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: That's the watch I that's one of the watches I associate you with.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Like when I know it's funny, like my wife says the same thing.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: I think my my son thinks the same.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Like he wants it, he wants me to like engrave the case back.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Uh which I probably this probably will be the watch that I do that on.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: And it will he and I watch Bob Burgers together.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: And we have since he was like really small.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: So there's a few like kind of inside lines that we both laugh at together that might look very random on the back of this.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: But I like ones that are like that that you're you oh, there's gotta be a story to this or what's going on.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: I think that would be cool if you do have if you have like you know some inside thing between the two of you and put that on there.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe that's maybe maybe that's the move.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Uh but no, it has been getting a lot of wear.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: And it's one of those watches that I think just kind of like looks a little better as it gets worn.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm not a pilot.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm not a tree appraiser or anything.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: We're we're we're just wearing our watches.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Uh there's this this this difference between like a functional tool and a luxury tool, even though a watch can be like both things at once, right?
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: So and maybe all watches on some level today are luxury tools because none of us need to.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: That's what I try to tell people all the time.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: I'm like, we don't need any of this stuff, but it's yeah.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: It's all luxury.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: If it's$20, it's all luxury.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Uh all right.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Well, so we'll we'll we'll get to that in a minute.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Uh we are we're we're coming into New York Watch Week, which means uh watch time, wind-up of New York Indies or something like that.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: Uh so much stuff.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: A lot of these events, a lot of watch brands, uh big and small, old and new, are all kind of coming into town and being a part of these events, and some of them are doing their own private things for VIP clients, and then there's others that are just totally free, like the wind-ups of the world that uh that you can just wander into and um and see a lot of cool watches and meet a lot of cool people and a lot of the community, watch community broader watch enthusiast community uh descends upon New York uh the this week for for all the different meetups and to hit up all the events.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: I think if you're coming into town, you probably go to all of them, right?
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: Like if you're like it's like it's like if there's like if Comic-Con was like in multiple locations, it's like Yeah.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: It's that's what I was telling somebody the other day.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: Uh wasn't that like this week or something.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: And that was like this past week too.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: This time of year is so busy, there's like so many things going on during this time of year in New York.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: Like it's crazy.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Is that in the Javits?
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's at the Javits.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Like I feel like they well, I guess they could that's like huge.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: That's like enormous, right?
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Like the Comic Con thing.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, they probably could.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, if you were thinking what I would say.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Because the Javits is like this soulless big thing.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: I've spent I've done so many events at the Javits that I don't know.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: But it's like in kind of like a shit part of town to get to.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's it if no matter how much they try to build it up, it's like not any place that anybody wants to be.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: You're not like hanging out over there.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: Like, oh, let's pop over to the show.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: No, the people who live over there, because they've built like, you know, those new like, you know, fancy buildings and whatnot over there.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: I'm just like, I can't believe people would want to live in a ghost town where like nobody's there after four o'clock in the afternoon.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: It's not that whole side of the city.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Uh have you do you go to that?
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Have you ever been to that?
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: Uh what?
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: The Comic Con?
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: The Comic Con?
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, I've been twice actually.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Is it cool?
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Actually, it's super cool.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: Like it's to be honest with you, it's even morphed into like it's obviously it's like huge, if you're a huge comic book nerd and like superheroes and all that stuff, like yeah, and which I kind of am.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: But uh the other cool part about it though is like a lot of my friends in the art world, like for who do like graffiti, like even the people who, for example, like there's graffiti that you recognize all over the city that you've seen.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: You'd be like, oh, I recognize that tag from somebody.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: Those people are there, but you have no, but like, yeah, those people are there, and most people don't even know what they look like.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: And it's like a rare opportunity to get to meet them that you might not even know that you're meeting them, which is also kind of so cool.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so like you can meet, like you can meet like for example, you know, these stickers, most people, I know we're in an audio medium here, but there's like these stickers on my wall with like it says like Ribs GAC and the Kess Gak.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Like those are like very popular stickers that you will see like all over the city.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: They're called like sticker kings of the city.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: Those people also will be found at Comic-Con as well.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: So like, yeah, so like a lot of like weird or sort of sort of super niche cultures outside of like your typical, you know, superhero comic book type stuff is also found there too.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Um a lot of like uh it's also a lot of like uh uh what was the other thing that I thought was really cool there.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: Uh there's a company that specializes in make in making um um toys out of rappers, uh essentially, like rah like rap toys or hip-hop toys or whatever.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: And they what's it called, they exhibit there too.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: So you can find like a lot of really interesting stuff.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: And then randomly you also find like people from the um like from music world.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: I know Shaq was there this year too.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: So like it's kind of like a weird convergence of people in the best way.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, cool.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Well that sounds that sounds like a cool scene to be at, uh especially if you're like an enthusiast around this stuff.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: Or maybe you just like like the Marvel movies and think it's cool and like you find something to get into there, right?
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Like you don't have to be like the ultra nerd to Yeah, and yeah, and the other thing is.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: Which is like the watch events too, right?
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: Like you don't have to be hardcore down the hole to to go to these.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: I honestly, I mean, if they ever if you know if any of the the organizers of these events, obviously we know some of the organizers of these events, uh ever wanted to like make it all in one spot, it could probably fill the Javas, I probably would say, to be honest with you.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Because like similar to Comic-Con, it's like they have like this main floor with all the big, you know, big companies, and then they also have a subfloor underneath where it's like a whole bunch of indies and stuff like that.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: So that part's also really cool too.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Right on, right on.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: Well, that sounds awesome.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: Uh we have uh this week that we're going into um, you know, there's there's a lot of like kind of private events and and cocktail things and stuff like that.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, but there's also like I think it's important to have these things where the community feels like they can like find other people like them and uh you know discover new brands and stuff like that.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: I think that's like a really important part of this as well.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: Even though a lot of the kind of like you know, independent and and kind of high-end brands that are coming, it's it's really it's kind of focused on on their clients and that kind of stuff.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: But I think it's important to have that balance and find that balance somewhere in there so that uh the broader kind of enthusiast community feels like they have a space that they can you know see and be seen and all that kind of and all that kind of jazz.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Um so on uh on Friday, I will be on a panel at Wind Up uh with the Grey NATO guys.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Uh so Jason, Heaton, James Stacey, uh and it'll be with um Marathon.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Uh we'll be talking about uh titanium watches and all that kind of stuff.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: So that's uh I think three o'clock, three or four o'clock, something like that, uh on uh no, maybe like four or five on Friday.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Uh so if you're at wind up, you can you can you can swing in and check that out.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Obviously the Grenado guys are always like doing awesome stuff uh there and um and there'll be a Q ⁇ A session and all that kind of stuff, so you can come and pebble them with questions if you want.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Uh and then I'll be at Watch Time um kind of on and off of on Saturday and Sunday as well.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: So if you see me, be sure to stop me and say hi uh and uh and show me what you're in on your wrist.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: I'd love to uh I would love to see it.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: Uh I I know there's a few kind of releases that that I know of around Watch Time that I'm uh that I'm pretty excited to see.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: Uh and some of them we've we have already been released.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Uh one of them, the uh I don't know if they're exhibiting at any of these things, uh Toledano and Chan, the B1 Dazzle.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: I was with Phil last week at his place checking this thing out, who thought it was really cool.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: Um mostly because of the inspiration for this design, which came from uh I guess an artist came up with this that was incorporated by the British Navy that they put on their ships.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: So cool, right?
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Like it so like World War I, I think is is when this was most prominent on these ships.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: So the whole point was like the that the uh the German subs looking up to spot the ships, they would see them, and because of the um this this dazzle camouflage, they would have a hard time discerning how far away they were, what their speed was, if it was one ship or two ships.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: It was really meant to be more disorienting, not how we traditionally think of camouflage.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, kind of hide hiding it or something like that.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: It looked like zebra strike.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: Like it looked really I was sitting there, I I wanted to watch more of it because I saw part of this on the story that you posted, and I was like, I was like, that looks like you would stand out like crazy, but but Yeah, it really does.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: And and and maybe that's the point, like right.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: It's it's what it reminded me of is a lot of the um the concept cars.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: Like I used to live in Detroit, and we would see these on the road from like, you know, uh Cadillac or or or any of the like GM cars like that were or Corvettes, you know, that hadn't been released yet.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: They would be covered in in this like camouflage stuff that I think that was the whole point.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: So you couldn't photograph the code.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: So you could well you could, but if you know if you did, it was kind of hard to tell what the lines looked like, the shape of the.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: It was like it was hard to discern what the car was going to look like with it on.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: And that's like the whole point of of these ships as well.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: And it just happens to like look kind of badass.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: It's like it's like these lines, these parallel lines, and then some of them are set at like 45 degree angles or different weird, and then they all kind of converge in in in weird ways.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: I thought that was a really cool uh source of inspiration uh there.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: And I feel now I feel bad.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Like if an artist came up for it, I feel like we should be, we should be.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: I'll put him, I'll I'll find the source, the artists, and and put it in the show notes uh so we can properly credit.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: You know, probably some poor artist came up with this, and the military was like, yoink.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: We're taking that.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: Forget this uh guy or gal or whoever came up with it.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Uh but I but it works well with this with this watch because the watch itself is kind of like asymmetric and all weird angles.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: So it has the same kind of effect where it's you kind of look at it from all these angles and you're kind of trying to make heads or tails of what's going on here.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: What is you know, it'd be interesting to see this watch for the first time with that camo versus, you know, because we've seen it's it's a design that's existed now for a few years.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: Um it's uh, as you mentioned, yeah, King Midasy.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: That's what kind of reminded me of like a King Mite, like a Rolex King Midas.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: How does it um how does it wear on wrist?
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: Like I've never I've never seen one.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: It wears really nicely.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: Uh it's it's so this one is titanium, it's grade five titanium.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: So it's very light and it's all you know integrated.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: It's just um uh it doesn't really conform to how you think about traditional like dimensions of a watch because of its shape.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: So it wears almost like a cuff piece of jewelry.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Like it's it stays kind of wide and then it tapers a little bit, but it's all this kind of singular shape.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: So there's no lug or any like any kind of traditional how we would think about a watch being presented.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: It's it's very different than that.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: Uh so you you'd have to be cool with kind of wearing it as almost like you would a piece of jewelry or thinking about it like that.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: At least that's that's that's kind of how I feel about it.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: Um but it's a very interesting experience on the wrist, and it's something new and different.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, I tip my hat to to to those guys, Alfred and um and Phil, for coming up with this just kind of like outside the box and it's like it was really cool looking.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, I've always I've been a fan of that watch for like you said it was like about like three years old.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um just like just the like the the way the case shape and the in the shape of the bracelet and everything like that.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: I've always thought that that thing looked really, really cool.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: Um I was gonna say though is um damn lost my train of the case.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: It's not something that you'd be into though as like a like a trick bit of watchmaking.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: But yeah, you're into it as a like a physical conceptual piece of jewel jewelry, quote unquote jewelry type thing, but more than like, oh, this has this fancy movement and it has all this fancy f like like structurally how it's put together and the shape of it is what makes it interesting.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: So, you know, that so I wouldn't get too hung up on the the movement inside or anything like that, because that's like secondary to the experience.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: And some watches are like that, right?
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: I think a lot of watches are like that.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's you you you you you're losing the you know, the kind of the the forest for the trees, right?
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Like if you just focus on what is the movement here and the pre the price is all based around that.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: What I think a lot of brands, uh especially small brands, put a lot of effort into producing like this really interesting bracelet or experience on the wrist or something like that that is not just the move, it's not just boiled down to the movement, and that's to like completely sell it short.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: If you if you boil the watch down to well, what movement are they using?
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: And you know, why would I pay X amount for a Slita, this or that, right?
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Like, A, I don't think there's anything wrong with with these Sleedum, like they're fine movements, but like a watch is a lot more than just that.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: And sometimes the engineering and like production engineering that goes into it and problem solving that has that's done to create these things can be like a lot more than just like getting an off-the-shelf bracelet from a vendor and a case and like putting all the pieces together, right?
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: That's how some people brands do it, of course.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: But there are brands that that that don't, and uh, you know, if you're like curious about the price, like uh I would ask the brands, like stuff like that.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, you know, thanks for asking.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: Here's how we make the bracelet.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean that's pretty much my sort of ethos when it comes to I I mean, I think any for the few people that ever heard me speak on pretty much like your pod is just like I'm very much like design focused, like I have shiny objects syndrome.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: Like I'm just like, if it's cool uh and if I really like the design, like I don't really care all that much about what the movement is.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: It will factor into like how much I I mean, don't be wrong, like we're I think we're all we're we'll think about like how much the movement factors into how much we're willing to pay for something, but at the same time, if something is do if someone's doing something really cool, really unique, really taking a lot of time and effort into the design of something, then I'm willing to pay the extra money that that is for for that.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, even sometimes even more so than like giving me an extra 10 to 20 hours of power reserve or whatever else you might get out of a movie.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: I think it's it's easy to get caught up in a lot of that stuff.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: You know, the the is it is it m you know anti-magnetic and the power reserve number and all that.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: But you don't really think about how that affects you like you in the day-to-day.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: It's just like the depth rating of a watch.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: You know, which which for the vast, vast majority of us, even the people that dive means next to nothing because you know, you you know, your dive, your recreational dive 30, 40 meters max or whatever, you know, it's it's it's in then a smaller group of divers still that go anywhere beyond that, but certainly, you know, 5,000 meters to then like all that's just like a sneer, makes no difference to to the watch.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: But you know, we like these like stats.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: It's like it's something to talk about when you watch.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, is it impressive that it has five days of power reserve?
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: And and I can look at a movement and say, yes, that is impressive, especially if they came up with some like neat solution to to get there where it's still thin or it's still whatever it is.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Like I can appreciate the the ideas and the problem solving and the engineering that went into creating it, but also be like, you know, you know, it could have you know 30 hours of power reserve, and I would still like it just as much if I like it the design, you know, to to to your point, or to how it feels on my wrist, or I like how it looks, or whatever it is.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Like to me, that transcends, you know, uh the the the kind of like spec sheet.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: And I think it works the other way around too.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Like, like um, you know, like if you're a space nerd and you feel like you should what like the speedmaster, like that shouldn't be the reason that you buy the the speedmaster if you don't like the design.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Like and and if you know if you if you see the speed master, you're like, I'm not really much I don't I don't really care for that design.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, but I love the NASA program, I love all the space stuff.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: But that's not that's not gonna affect like, well, I guess I'll buy this watch then.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't know.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: Like to me, it's it's like like how you feel about it and and your personal experience with it is all that matters at the at the end of the end of the day.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, and all this other stuff can just be maybe things that help you talk yourself into it or out of it.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: I don't know, whatever.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: But Lord knows do we find enough things to talk ourselves into?
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah, that's true.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: And that's that's where this idea of like the difference between a functional tool and like a luxury tool come comes in, and and and how we we think about it, like like as we were saying, none of us need these things anymore, as we say all the time these these days.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: So it has to be about something other than you know, uh like I I'm not the pilot, I'm not the diver, I'm not the whatever.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: And even if you are a pilot, a diver, uh tree appraiser, you don't like the like it's not 1956 anymore.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Like you, these aren't tools that are that you need to help you like do the function of that thing.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right?
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: Like they used to be in some way, shape, or form.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: But like now, you know, even if I dive all the time in love dive watches, I can still admit, well, yeah, that it's it's a secondary tool.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: I don't need it because I have this other dive computers and have in and all these other professions have these other much more sophisticated instruments right now.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: So it's like detaching that like why I've made a tool watches and why am I into it?
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: Well, because I need it for this functionality and all that kind of stuff.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like, do you really?
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Like, probably not.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: And I think it's okay to admit to yourself that like no, like it is for these other reasons.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: And I like that it's associated with like this history of diving, or that because I appreciate it.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: Or maybe I like the Speedmaster and I like the space program.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: So I appreciate that.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: Or you could just like the aesthetic of what a tool watch looks like.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: Or you can just like the aesthetic.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: But this is, you know, I think there's a lot of people, a lot of the, you know, the hardcore tool watch crowd, which I would certainly like kind of put myself into, you know, but you still have to admit that, like, well, I still like I have to like the way that this looks and feels on my wrist because like most of the time I'm not gonna be diving with it or flying with it or appraising trees in it or whatever, right?
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Like it's just gonna be on my wrist and I'm gonna be like sitting at my desk or at my like kids' sports game or whatever, like and it's gonna be doing absolutely nothing remarkable.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: You know, but you still have to bond with it in your own way.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: And I think watch brands are becoming more cognizant of this and how they market these things.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: Like they'll still tout the yes, it's it's capable of doing all this crazy stuff, of course.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: But like they will market it also in ways that like really lean into like the lifestyle elements of its design.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: Whatever that means.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, or like how the the design is expressive and then these when you can kind of use it to, you know, to to emote your personality or whatever, you know, however they're gonna do it.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: But it's it's it's not like it was in in the 50s, 60s, you know, the 70s, where it was marketed as something that you need because this.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I know some people complain about what it called, like lifestyle marketing, but when it comes to like luxuries, any sort of, you know, I know not everything is technically a quote unquote luxury watch, but like you know, but when it comes to like watches, I'm just like, yeah, like I'm not mad about that because I'm just like, to your point, I'm like, it is just about lifestyle.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, like you know, that's all that's really all that's really all it is.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, like, like to your point, we don't need them, we don't need these as functional tools for the most part.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Isn't it like that's why we also have like five, six, seven, ten, twenty watches?
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, like come on, like the jig is up exactly this, right?
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: It's uh and and again, I say this as someone like who really loves tool watches and tries to use them like for their intended purposes as much as I can, but they're also not a necessity for my life to have like fulfilled or for those activities to mean something to me, right?
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Like if I'm like diving or hyping up a mountain, I'm like, oh, I don't have my watch with me.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: Damn, you know, like no, I'm still like living my best life and enjoying the the like the activity that I'm doing.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: And sure if I've got like the watch on me, it might add a little bit more meaning to that watch because you know it's there with me and I'm like, you know, yeah, it's providing the time and all that kind of stuff.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: But it's like just a part of my kit.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: I and I think, you know, what made me kind of stop and think about this always is this is Tutors Born to Dare and how they use it, you know, because I think we it's easy to view them as this kind of like old school tool watch manufacturer and born to dare.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, it's for people who do like crazy shit and the watches can put up with, but it's it's not.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: They use it for like, you know, the flamingo chronograph with the pink and blue dot is like, you know, born to dare by doing something a little bit different in and like appearing different and and like be yourself and and you can wear big bright colors and you don't have to like fit in with all the the black and the gray drab.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: I say as we're wearing black and gray too.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: But you know, it's it's like you know, you can you can you're born to dare.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's it's it's more of that stuff.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: And and I always noticed this about how they used it, and it always kind of irked me like a little bit, but I could never put my finger on why until like I really stopped and thought about it.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: And and it's like, well, they have to find the the audience to sell it to, and the audience that they're selling it to knows that they don't need the watch to dive, to fly, to hike, whatever it is.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: They know that it's not a necessity for those activities, so they have to find other reasons to like make the watch to provide value for these watches to to this customer base that they're trying to reach, other than just it's it's it's two-watch bona fides, right?
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: Like it has to be about something else.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: And this is them like bridging that.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know?
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: And I think it and I think it works.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: Like I have to be honest with you, like I think it works.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: And I mean, because like to your point, like you you see the born like anything that's under the quote unquote born to dare collection or whatever you want, if you want if you want to call it a collection.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: But like most of those watches, I mean, like, they're not reinventing the wheel with any of those, with any of those watches for the most part.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, they have like you said, different colors, maybe different case materials for certain for certain things, I think, for a couple of them.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: But they're they're the same, they're the same chronographs, they're the same dive watches, they're the same.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's the same underneath all of it.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: It's just like a different way to express it and for you to express yourself with like a bright pink dial or a bright blue dial, whatever it is.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: But that's and like this is not they've been making watches like that for a long time.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: You go back to the 90s, you know, and and uh you know you'll find weird, crazy dial colors or whatever.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: They just weren't marketed.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: Because it was already by then the watches had shifted from like being the necessity that they were to being just kind of, you know, it's well, it's it's something fashionable.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: I like the way that it looks, I've I've I'm a watch guy, so I like wearing a watch.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: I appreciate the mechanics, I appreciate the history, all that kind of stuff.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: But it's not the necessity that it once was.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: So what else?
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Like, how else can we express ourselves with these watches?
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: Then it becomes about something else.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: So you get the bright yellow dials, the red dials, the blue dials, you know, whatever it is, and uh put some diamonds on there.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: Let's polish up a whatever.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: Like it's it's all it's all fair game, you know, at the end of the day.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: But it changes how you feel about it.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, like the truth of the matter is I know a lot of people complain, I'm sure I've probably said it at some point.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: I'm like, oh god, they all they did was change the dial color.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: But to be truth, or for certain things.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: But like, but to be honest with you though, like I even saw someone with a tutor, like a tutor chrono pink dial.
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: Um, and I was like, oh, and I hadn't seen it in person before.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: I was like sitting on the train and saw somebody with it, and I was just like, Well, just in the wild.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Just in the wild, which I really have never seen, you know, you know, I I've never really seen one in a wild before, and I was like, oh, that looks cool.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: Like, I was like, I don't know if I could pull that off, but I was just like, I'm not like, and I think I've said this before, I was just like, I'm not really a big fan of most Tudor Chronos, except for the new one that in fact, and in fact, the Bumblebee I've seen, I've seen in person too, that looks pretty sweet and yellow.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm not gonna lie, as much as I was as much as I was like, I don't know about I don't know about yell yellow, but I was just like, nah, I I could wear that if if I had the if I felt strongly enough to buy it.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: It it is pretty cool, uh honestly.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: And and and I like that I because I like seeing watches that I never would have expected to like, but in person and how somebody wears it.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh that that does look cool.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: And it's it's the same with a lot of other things.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, on the train I see people dressed in all kinds of different ways.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: But man, that like that outfit looks dope.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Or that like I could never pull it off, or I say I think that I would never think to wear that.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: But then like I see somebody pull it together, like, oh, that looks awesome.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: And like I love how that person is you know, just going about their especially if you see someone that you feel like based on how their dress is like only one or two degrees away from how you personally dress, or something like that.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: You're like, like, oh, maybe I could do that.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it helps get you out of that kind of like thinking of, you know, I think it's easy to get in your own head about it and you know, why I'm in my my kind of ways, I wear what I wear and all.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: And I think it's good to kind of feel comfortable in in what you you know, what you know, but it's it's also okay to push yourself out of that comfort zone a little bit.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: And and I think when you see other people that are a click or two away and doing something like that, oh yeah, it's like inspiring uh a little bit.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: It doesn't have to be the watch, but it could be the watch.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: I love seeing watches like that in in in the wild uh and and on somebody's wrist.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: It's just how they're wearing it.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: It's legitimately exciting for me.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: It's yeah, and and like I see a lot of like just like black black bays, yeah.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: And you know, a lot of that kind of stuff around.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: You know what I see a lot in uh in in like in Manhattan or something is uh Black Bay 54s.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: Is that like smaller?
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: I see that like relatively like more frequently.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: That watch is pop.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: I think that watches a lot more.
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: I mean, I know it's popular, but I think it's a lot more popular than people even realize.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think so.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: It always looks fantastic.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I always love seeing it uh on the rest.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: But I I'm with you.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: I like seeing the kind of weird, bold out there watches in the wild.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: It's like, wow, that's that's cool.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: That's a swing, and sometimes it works.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Sometimes it doesn't, but uh uh but yeah, I I don't know.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: And I you know, I think also it does kind of feed into this.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: Like our watches release, like uh is there too much pressure on watch brands to to release too like so much product?
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: I kind of feel like I was thinking about this the other day too, to the question.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: Is this like there's there's some brands that I definitely feel like release too much product and I'm kind of feel like inundated with it.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: I won't go into any names, but um but yeah, like there's some brands where I'm just like I do feel now it's like not every brand, but I do feel now that it's just like there's so many releases all the time.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: And I've gotten to the point where I'm just like, who's buying all these watches?
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: That's what I want to know.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: I'm like, who is buying all of these watches?
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: And I I yeah, I get that you're every brand is out there to try to make money, and obviously that's their own prerogative to do so, but I also sometimes feel like there's some brands that I even feel like are doing well, like they've been growing for a long, long time.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: And and I'm just like, I don't I I sometimes I'm just like who is buying all of their watches?
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: And the releases aren't bad or anything like that, but it's just like I do think there is something to letting people breathe a bit before you get a chance, before you hit them with another one.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: It's like three it's like every three to four weeks.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: Sometimes there are some brands where I'm just like, really, like you could have we could wait a little bit for your next release.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's I think about that a lot too.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: Who is buying these things?
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, who's buying all these watches?
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: Especially like if you if you had a release and it like did pretty well, and then you release something that's almost the same, but just slightly different.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: Like, are you expecting to find this like whole other new cohort that were that we're maybe would have bought that other one, but we're just a a click away from buying it, and now that those people are gonna buy it?
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: I feel like there's a lot of we're just gonna throw a lot of stuff against the wall and see what sticks.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: And then when it like hits, it really hits and it does really well.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: So they're willing to stomach some watches that like don't hit too much.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: So there's this like kind of scatter shot approach from some brands.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: And it's probably it's not exclusive to watches.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: I'm sure a lot of companies don't for sure.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Which which sucks, you know, this whole like kind of fast fashion.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: I feel like that's a whole other like discussion.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: Um that's it's like not a healthy thing for for our economy to be like thinking about.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: But uh by the way, tangent, uh, there's a YouTube channel called Climate Town that you should definitely watch if you don't.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: The guy's here in New York and he talks a lot about that kind of stuff.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: Which is fantastic.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Um so, anyways, back on a topic.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: I I I do like I don't I also like think it cheapens just what a watch means.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: Uh like what they're they're asking us to buy something and like have it for the rest of our life and wear it for many, many years and hand it down.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: And when I when I'm thinking about a watch like that, and then I'm seeing them release like all these watches every quarter with like fashion cycles and like seasonal cycles with like a summer color palette, a winter color palette.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: Like, wait a minute here.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: I no, I thought the watch was supposed to be like this, it would transcend seasonal seasonality and be something that I can just wear every day for years and years and years on end.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: You know, I don't want to think about watches and well, it's it's summer, so I'm gonna put these watches away, along with like you know, my white pants, and then get out this other group of watches and you know, and and my other outfits and my coats.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: And like I don't want to think about watches like that.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: And I don't think about watches like that.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: Like our brands asking us to think about watches.
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I really do feel that.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: Like it's it's like it would be like if the NFL was like 82 games a year.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: It's just like no the games like part of the reason why people love football so much is just because it's like each week there's you know, there's only one big moment.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: You know, you're you know you're only getting a couple you're only getting like what now it's 18 weeks, but like, you know, but yeah, you're getting 18 games and that's and that's it.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: And I think it kind of takes away the specialness of of what each release potentially is.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: So Yeah.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I wonder too how if it like props up this like I feel like this is kind of you know um under the under the rug kind of like uh economy of watches being shifted around from like brands and retailers to pre-owned places to because like the market for like you know, quote unquote pre-owned watches that are like new watches that are just like floating around everywhere.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: It seems like what is this?
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: What is going on here?
- 31:46unknown: I don't know.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: And and it's like all the there's a there's a you know there's a handful of like really big secondary markets that are like have huge inventories of you know like new watches.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and what's going on here?
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: What is this?
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: And it's weird because I kind of feel like um You know, I was gonna kind of ask you this question too, but I'll but I'll say this first because I kind of feel like you know um you know I kind of feel like we've reached a little bit of a post-hype phase, but at the same time, I don't feel like the brands have stopped acting like we were post-hype.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's true.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: And and it's like they don't know how.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it's like and and I think a lot of it still comes is it's like after the uh shutdown and the pandemic stuff.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: You know, brands I think tried to quickly scale up to meet all this like newfound without thinking, oh wait, I think this might just be kind of like a a blip thing and it's gonna come back to normal, which it did, of course, and then that left some brands in like precarious situations.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: Uh and now they don't know how to like, well, we've kind of created this machine that moves at a certain rate.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: How do you back off of that?
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: It's hard to it's hard to downscale that after you've like, you know, after you've after you've built it up.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, I feel the same way about like I mean, people say I've been saying it for like at least the la last couple of years about sneakers.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: Like the sneaker market has completely imploded and died.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: And look at Snake and like he's stock, right?
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: Like they just put too much inventory into the market.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: And now you can go to uh like outlet stores and see like what were once hype you know, fours or something just like sitting on the on the shelf and in every size.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like you can get like anything you really want, like you can get it, and you could probably get it at a pretty decent price.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: And yeah, it's uh and it's like on one hand, uh it's cool if I can get sneakers that I like without having to worry that I'm gonna have to pay eight hundred dollars for the pair on like the secondary market.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: You know, but on the other hand, it did it it's uh I like there has to be a medium in there where you can still kind of keep people really excited about what you're doing uh and make it feel special, like when you get the the watch.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: Like my phone literally just went off with a sneakers uh notification for the sneakers app, you know, what's yeah, what's new this week.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: And you know, every every every week they've got their, you know, here's what's here's what's coming, here here are the drops uh this week.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: And you know, it's it's it's like two so frequent.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: And then there's like a handful of shoes in every single one of them.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: It's like, well, you know, I'm not like I'm not buying shoes every week, or uh you know, maybe some of their diehards are or something, but you know, who who are these uh you know, who are the people that are coming into this thing like that often?
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: And it's it's it's tough to keep up with.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: And I guess sneakers are like a slightly different thing, obviously.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: Watch, but like watches are are not that far off.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: Far off, yeah, but I'm starting to feel like it's starting to become that way.
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: Like even with the question I want to ask you too is like I've noticed there's so many more limited edition watches being released around events now, aside from the big events, like smaller events now than ever.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: And don't be wrong, like some of them are really cool and stuff like that, and others of them I'm sometimes I'm just like others of those others of them, I'm like, okay, that looks I it's not for me.
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: But I think the one thing I've also noticed too is like I see some of these limited editions and they look like they could be, um, for lack of better words, they should be like regular production watches.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: Like there's nothing incredibly special about them.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: Like the designs are not anything that couldn't be like a regular release, and they'll be like, we're selling 25 of these, and they're just going, but it's an all-black watch.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: Well, I look, I think the key to it is at the event, around these events or something.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: Because the easiest time to sell a watch, the best time to sell a watch is like right when it's introduced and somebody sees it for the very first time.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: Like they they don't have time to think about it or see a hundred other releases that are they're like right there, ready to go.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: And I think a lot of brands that are come to events like they're happening this week know this very well.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: So they'll prep whatever releases that they have so they can have inventory right there to take advantage of that very fact.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: Like, oh, we're we know we're gonna sell these because people are gonna be right there and excited about it right at the moment.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, and then you know, all the FOMO stuff, all that.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: And but they're like right there.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: So even like if it's online, you still have a moment to kind of uh and there's not like someone right there, so you can still think about it a little bit, but like if you're right there in front of somebody and excited about it, you know, and it's like you're in the atmosphere, like you know how it goes.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Like you bought watches at these days.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: It's the easiest time to sell them.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: And so if I like none of us are above this, right?
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: Like like it's it's yeah.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: It'd be interesting in like hindsight, yeah.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Are those the watches that like last, or are they the ones that are like quickly gone and in the collection?
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: Sometimes after some events like that or some limited edition release, you know, three weeks later, you'll see like an influx of the phone.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: Like you just you just see them cut you see them pop up for you know double the price or something like that.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: And it's just like Yeah, I guess that's the other side of it, right?
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: People are doing it not because they want it, but because they're only gonna be available here, they're gonna sell out.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna jump on one and sell it in three weeks and make a hundred bucks, a thousand bucks, two thousand bucks, whatever.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: I do think for like the smaller brands, it's like you don't usually see the prices jump up anything too, too crazy.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: But yeah, but yeah, like you definitely see it though.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it kind of sucks.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: Don't do that if you're at the show this week.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: Please don't do that.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: Like at least keep it for like a little while and then you know find like a community of other people.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: Like like the Great NATO Slack has their own buy-sell trade thing that you know is is good because it's it's there's nobody like ripping each other, like because we all kind of feel like we're holding each other responsible.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: We're all kind of like friends.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: It's all like kind of like it feels like one big friend.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: Those are the best places to buy and sell watches, in my opinion.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: Like, that's the that's the only place that I've sold watches in the last like three years.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: And you know, I've sold a handful of watches here and there, and they've all been there.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: And I always put them up, like I feel excited because I know somebody's gonna be really excited about it.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: I try to put them up at like a very good price.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm not gonna nickel and dime people, and I'd rather sell it for like less money and then not have a headache for like two weeks of trying to move it.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: Like that's my my time, I feel like is worth more in stress levels.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: So if I list it for a few hundred bucks under market and knowing that it'll be gone like that afternoon, and I can ship it right there and then not have to think about it again.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: And I made somebody else's day.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: It's a win-win scene.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: You know, yeah, I feel good about it.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: They feel good about it.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: It's a win-win.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: I literally just got the watch.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: I was gonna I don't think I've talked to you since I I finally got a Lorca GMT.
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: Um finally got him on the code.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: Were you at the opening uh of of his uh uh of Jesse's uh Yeah, it was just a few I was in LA.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: I didn't get a chance to go.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: I knew about it, but I didn't get a chance to go.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, sorry, Jesse, if you're listening.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: We gotta get him back in in here.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: We've been uh texting.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Because I know he's working on some other things that I that I um I won't say here because someone else told me.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we'll we'll get him in here and we'll we'll we'll just have it all we'll just have it out.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: But uh but let's just say he's one of those people I'm always excited to see what he's got cooking.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: And like talk about a good dude.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: Like he's he's the absolute best.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: Maybe we'll bring his guitar in and he can do it.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I actually listened to some of his music the other day.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: Very comic.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: Very comic.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's good.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: Uh all right.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: Well, that's gonna do it for this week's episode.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: Josh, thanks so much for opening your studio to me uh still after all these years uh for us to shoot the shit about watches.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: Always fun.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: All right, uh we'll hopefully see you this weekend.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'll be I'll definitely be around.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: I wish I was gonna be I would say there's a chance I might be a wind up on Friday.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: Um if anything, I might be arriving at the time of your panel.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, come to the panel at the very earliest.
- 39:07SPEAKER_02: But if not, I'll definitely be floating around Saturday and Sunday for sure.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: So awesome.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: Keep an eye for Josh, keep an eye out for me.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: If you see us, say hi.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: Uh we'd we'd love to see you and uh and say hi.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: All right, thank you so much for tuning in this week.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: And until next time, take care.
