- 0:01Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to another episode of Fox Crickets Podcast
- 0:04Speaker 1: the following. My name is Courtney Olshrom, a senior journalists
- 0:06Speaker 1: based in Melbourne. Really delighted to have Matthew Hoggart, a
- 0:11Speaker 1: sixty seven Test fitterm for England took two hundred and
- 0:14Speaker 1: forty eight wickets and was a memory that's starr in
- 0:17Speaker 1: two thousand and five team that won the Ashes join
- 0:20Speaker 1: us again. We had had a ball the last simme around.
- 0:22Speaker 1: But the last time around, Matt there was a lot
- 0:24Speaker 1: of optimism about what was two unfold.
- 0:28Speaker 2: That we're doomed captain and redoomed.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Yeah, as you say first time around, lots of optimism
- 0:33Speaker 3: and lots of lots of yes, we've got a brilliant
- 0:36Speaker 3: chance in this ashy series. And then two games later,
- 0:41Speaker 3: I can't say two tests. I think two games might
- 0:43Speaker 3: be the better way put in it. We're very much
- 0:46Speaker 3: behind the eight ball.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Six days in two down. It has to become the
- 0:52Speaker 1: first team since Don Bradman led Australia to get up
- 0:57Speaker 1: from two love down or two nil down in nineteen
- 0:59Speaker 1: thirty six thirty seven. It's a long way back, but
- 1:03Speaker 1: can it be done?
- 1:05Speaker 3: It is a very long way back. But yes, records
- 1:10Speaker 3: are there to be broken. Records are hard and that's
- 1:14Speaker 3: why the test of time. So yes, it can be done,
- 1:18Speaker 3: but it's going to take an extraordinary effort and a
- 1:23Speaker 3: I would say complete rethink of how we go about
- 1:28Speaker 3: playing our test Crooking.
- 1:31Speaker 1: We might start with just a bit of breaking news
- 1:33Speaker 1: from today and this I think will give in your
- 1:36Speaker 1: expertise in through your career. Mark Wood is coming home.
- 1:41Speaker 1: The knee hasn't come up after the Perth Test a
- 1:45Speaker 1: couple of weeksgo. Obviously you had that extended still on
- 1:47Speaker 1: the sidelines, Josh hazel Wood has been ruled out for
- 1:50Speaker 1: the rest of the series. He didn't play it or
- 1:52Speaker 1: didn't make it to the satting line and achilles problem
- 1:55Speaker 1: s grounded him. How hard is that? I've heard a
- 1:58Speaker 1: bit bowling on Australian We could and the ground's being hard,
- 2:01Speaker 1: but how hard is the ball here? In your thirties?
- 2:04Speaker 1: Obviously weve got to cople Vozzi bowlers who are fearing
- 2:06Speaker 1: pretty well installing, But in your thirties it's a pretty
- 2:10Speaker 1: tough asking and it's clearly a difficult one for Mark Wood.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Yeah, being fit as a bowler is a hard ask.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Anyway because it's such an an unusual action. We're not
- 2:21Speaker 3: built for bowling, and we put so much stresses and
- 2:24Speaker 3: strange to our bodies that it takes its top. It's
- 2:27Speaker 3: not just on Australian soil. You go to anywhere, the
- 2:33Speaker 3: pictures are normally hard because they've been undercover, they've been rolled,
- 2:36Speaker 3: so it's not such an Australian problem. It's really hard
- 2:40Speaker 3: in England when the outfield's soft, and then you get
- 2:43Speaker 3: onto the hards had hard wickets, so proposes its own problems.
- 2:49Speaker 2: But going back to being fit, there's a difference between
- 2:54Speaker 2: being fit to play and being match fit.
- 2:57Speaker 3: And it's proved over and old, over and over again
- 3:00Speaker 3: that you have to have miles in your legs to
- 3:03Speaker 3: be able to perform in a Test match. And yes,
- 3:08Speaker 3: it's all right saying we've had five days of intense practice,
- 3:11Speaker 3: but bowlers have been bowling there forty minutes spells in
- 3:15Speaker 3: at going off for physio, going off for ice baths.
- 3:18Speaker 3: They haven't been standing in the field for the next
- 3:20Speaker 3: six hours. They haven't been chasing the ball, they haven't
- 3:22Speaker 3: had to do the hard yards. Just being stood up
- 3:25Speaker 3: all days. It is hard enough and walking around at
- 3:28Speaker 3: a cricket pitch. So when we come to say we
- 3:31Speaker 3: didn't execute our plans as a bowler, and we has
- 3:35Speaker 3: a bowling unit.
- 3:36Speaker 2: We haven't executed.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Is that because we haven't got the skill, we aren't
- 3:40Speaker 3: fit enough, or is it just we're coming up with
- 3:43Speaker 3: the wrong plans. So there's a whole host of questions.
- 3:47Speaker 3: You saw the intensity that we bowled on the first
- 3:49Speaker 3: day at Perth and we rolled Australia, and then we
- 3:55Speaker 3: haven't seen that intensity since except for that very short
- 4:00Speaker 3: session when you were chasing verious short amount of arms
- 4:03Speaker 3: in the last Test match. And I want to see
- 4:06Speaker 3: that intensity throughout the Test match. You want to see
- 4:08Speaker 3: that from ball one to the end. You want to
- 4:11Speaker 3: see the bawlers coming off drained, being carried off that
- 4:13Speaker 3: pitch because they've put so much time and effort into
- 4:17Speaker 3: the game and we're just not seeing that.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I think Andrew flint Off, one of your teammates. You
- 4:24Speaker 1: think he said he used to drag himself off at
- 4:26Speaker 1: the end of the play and he'd slapping his chair,
- 4:28Speaker 1: but you knew he'd done the job, he'd given everything
- 4:30Speaker 1: he could. Talking to britt Lee earlier today, you're an
- 4:33Speaker 1: old sparring partner of yours, and he said he feels perversely,
- 4:36Speaker 1: he says, England might well be best performed, you know,
- 4:40Speaker 1: to produce in terms of the bowlers from now on,
- 4:42Speaker 1: because they've now got two matches under their legs. The
- 4:45Speaker 1: fact that what you were just touching on, they've actually
- 4:46Speaker 1: played a couple of matches and finally they might actually
- 4:49Speaker 1: be able to have the ground into the back up
- 4:51Speaker 1: time and again. And look, there's been a lot of
- 4:53Speaker 1: talk about joffer. You had that nice little spat at
- 4:56Speaker 1: the end. Love seeing that. Brittley thought it was great
- 4:59Speaker 1: to have that little being a bit of back and
- 5:01Speaker 1: forth and some chirp or some shaddar. It was good fun.
- 5:05Speaker 1: But how do you feel the fact I've actually got
- 5:08Speaker 1: do you agree with Brettday they've got two under their
- 5:10Speaker 1: belt now they can might be able to get going massively.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I mean, I mean I was a trundler.
- 5:17Speaker 3: I bowl one eighty mile an hour to watch that
- 5:21Speaker 3: one thirty clicks swim.
- 5:24Speaker 2: But I managed to get a job done.
- 5:26Speaker 3: And it's been able to to back yourself.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Up over and over again.
- 5:32Speaker 3: And it's it's not net bowling because you're bawling at
- 5:37Speaker 3: your friends, you're bowling at your mates, you're bowling in
- 5:39Speaker 3: a in a net environment that they don't have consequences.
- 5:44Speaker 3: You put yourself in front of forty thousand people, you're alive,
- 5:48Speaker 3: the ball actually disappears as actually consequences. You're playing against
- 5:52Speaker 3: somebody that actually wants to beat you. And it's not
- 5:54Speaker 3: just a in a net situation. You've got time, a
- 5:57Speaker 3: fine leg third man in between spells, you've got time
- 6:00Speaker 3: in between overs.
- 6:01Speaker 2: You have to put the ads in. You're standing out there.
- 6:04Speaker 3: You might be out there for an hour and a
- 6:06Speaker 3: half and not bowl and come up and have to
- 6:08Speaker 3: put in your your performance. So there's a whole host
- 6:12Speaker 3: of different things that happen in a game that you
- 6:15Speaker 3: cannot replicate in practice. And there's been tried and tested
- 6:23Speaker 3: over and over and over again. The playing is the
- 6:26Speaker 3: best form of practicing and getting the yards. And yes,
- 6:30Speaker 3: we might have had five five intents we've over prepared
- 6:34Speaker 3: over I can't my ass, we've over part of my French,
- 6:38Speaker 3: but not a chance in hell have we over prepared
- 6:41Speaker 3: for this test matches. And as you say, Brittley might
- 6:45Speaker 3: have a point that now that we've come up and
- 6:47Speaker 3: said rather than this is why can we not hold
- 6:49Speaker 3: line in length for intense periods of time? Why do
- 6:54Speaker 3: we always go back to the short ball? You go
- 6:57Speaker 3: to the short bawl. There's only one way. Unless we're
- 6:59Speaker 3: bowling for runouts, we'll put two ways in. If we're
- 7:02Speaker 3: bowling for runouts, you're only one way getting out.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Is that cool?
- 7:05Speaker 3: How can you take away your main modes of dismissal
- 7:10Speaker 3: by saying them, We're just going to bowl short at you.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Is that the captain? Is that the coaches at the balls?
- 7:16Speaker 3: Is that the lack of direction? Is it the lack
- 7:18Speaker 3: of ability to say right, then, let's see.
- 7:21Speaker 2: What if Australia done.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Australia hit line and length and hit the deck card
- 7:25Speaker 3: and actually run in and try to get the ball
- 7:27Speaker 3: to move.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I can remember when I.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Was playing listening to Glenn mcgart and Jason Gillespie and
- 7:35Speaker 3: there were number one and two in the world, or
- 7:37Speaker 3: very high up in the rankings, and they said, what
- 7:39Speaker 3: do you what's the secret? And they just said, we
- 7:41Speaker 3: ran up and hit back of a length hard, and
- 7:44Speaker 3: we ran up and hit the top of hostile and
- 7:47Speaker 3: the key, the key with a little bit of a bouncer.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Every now and again to keep the batsman honest. But
- 7:53Speaker 3: we assume it's not going to move. So the movement
- 7:57Speaker 3: off the scene or in the.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Air was a ball.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And all they did.
- 8:01Speaker 3: And if you will go back through history, all the
- 8:04Speaker 3: great fast bowlers and all this seem they hit line
- 8:07Speaker 3: and length for a long period of time. Mitchell Stark,
- 8:13Speaker 3: what's he done. He's pitched the ball up, he's swung it,
- 8:16Speaker 3: he's gone across our back. Yes, our batters have given
- 8:20Speaker 3: him a lot of help, and you just dangle it
- 8:22Speaker 3: outside of stump and within the first three or four
- 8:25Speaker 3: balls we're having a wild swish it. We'll get onto
- 8:29Speaker 3: the batters later. But the done is the whole Line've
- 8:35Speaker 3: done the basics. And I said last time, cricket is
- 8:39Speaker 3: a very simple game made complicated by the people that played.
- 8:42Speaker 3: If you take out bold LBW out of the equation
- 8:47Speaker 3: and we're just bowling for caught in the outfield, then
- 8:51Speaker 3: surely that is not the most statistical statistical way of
- 8:55Speaker 3: getting wickets.
- 8:56Speaker 2: It's not the most Go back to.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Hitting lining and length, hitting the top of ustunt, bring bowl,
- 9:01Speaker 3: bring lb W, you bring cord behind back into the
- 9:04Speaker 3: game and start putting pressure back onto the running up
- 9:08Speaker 3: and bowling short back of a length is not cut
- 9:10Speaker 3: in the mustard.
- 9:13Speaker 1: You touched on the over prepared comments from brind mcallum.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Now I know you do some motivational speaking. Also got
- 9:20Speaker 1: the hot roasting beast. He's been over prepared. Then would
- 9:25Speaker 1: you would you have roasted in the sunshine and news
- 9:27Speaker 1: in the last couple of days on the golf course?
- 9:30Speaker 1: How would you feed yourself if you're out there as
- 9:34Speaker 1: someone sort of in the Midlands around England at the moment,
- 9:36Speaker 1: how would you have feared out in the sun after
- 9:39Speaker 1: four days of Test cricket.
- 9:40Speaker 3: So I'll answer that by putting you into the scenario
- 9:44Speaker 3: when we went over there two thousand and six seven Adelaide. Yes,
- 9:49Speaker 3: we lost in Adelaide and a Test match that we
- 9:54Speaker 3: shouldn't have lost, and I was absolutely gutted at the
- 10:01Speaker 3: end of the game. I was I was trying to
- 10:04Speaker 3: sit in the locker because I didn't want to be.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I just wanted to see the quietly bad. That night,
- 10:16Speaker 2: most of the team went out to watch.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Who's the Singer Bobby Robbie Williams went out and Bobby
- 10:28Speaker 3: Williams and a concert. I what we've just lost a
- 10:33Speaker 3: test match that we shouldn't have lost. How on earth
- 10:37Speaker 3: can you go out and enjoy yourself and go out
- 10:39Speaker 3: to see a concert And to me it hurts so
- 10:44Speaker 3: much that we lost that test match. I couldn't go
- 10:46Speaker 3: out and enjoy myself to say, do you know what
- 10:48Speaker 3: we have under performed in two test matches. We've played
- 10:54Speaker 3: two days of the first game and we had lots
- 10:57Speaker 3: of time in between. We've played four of the second game.
- 11:02Speaker 3: But we're now going to go on holiday NUSA.
- 11:12Speaker 2: The it doesn't look right to the outside world. It
- 11:16Speaker 2: doesn't look right the fact that.
- 11:20Speaker 3: A load of people said, you know you've underprepared, you've
- 11:24Speaker 3: not been practicing, or you haven't played the games that
- 11:27Speaker 3: you need to. Yes, okay, if if your belief system
- 11:31Speaker 3: and you've prepared that way for the last four years
- 11:34Speaker 3: going into it, you stand up for.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Yourself and believes them, which what they have done.
- 11:39Speaker 3: We've got no qualms whatsoever with the fact that they
- 11:43Speaker 3: have stuck to.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Their guns and believed in their method.
- 11:47Speaker 3: But if your method isn't working and your results aren't
- 11:52Speaker 3: coming out, and then you bugger off to NUSA on
- 11:55Speaker 3: a jolly, then you're opening yourself to criticism and the
- 12:00Speaker 3: optics are not looking fantastic for the England at the moment.
- 12:04Speaker 2: And yes you can say they.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Don't care that they're going to stuck to the plans,
- 12:09Speaker 3: but if their beliefs and their plans are not the
- 12:13Speaker 3: right way around of winning ashes series or winning cricket, then.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Heads have to roll.
- 12:20Speaker 1: You're talking about the philosophy base ball. The cheddar afterwards
- 12:24Speaker 1: was is it dead?
- 12:26Speaker 3: Is this?
- 12:27Speaker 1: Is this the test that's killed it? I mean being
- 12:29Speaker 1: Stokes did look hurt after that match. He sort of
- 12:32Speaker 1: seen gad and the language he used. There's no room
- 12:34Speaker 1: for weak men in my dressing rooms. I need I
- 12:36Speaker 1: need to sort that out. What did you make of
- 12:38Speaker 1: it all?
- 12:38Speaker 2: Is it?
- 12:39Speaker 1: I mean? Is it dead? What do we see philosophy?
- 12:43Speaker 3: Well, you saw him in the first two Test matches
- 12:46Speaker 3: just saying basically shut to the press, we know what
- 12:49Speaker 3: we're doing.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Now after this Test match, do you know what you're doing?
- 12:53Speaker 2: And yes, it hurts.
- 12:56Speaker 3: The bass boy went out and scored what was it,
- 12:58Speaker 3: fifty one hundred and fifty balls? Was so he went
- 13:01Speaker 3: out and gutted it out. But you've got are you
- 13:05Speaker 3: contradicting yourself? Are you you've been saying for the last
- 13:09Speaker 3: four years the way to win Test matches is go
- 13:11Speaker 3: out and play positive, attacking cricket. You've been told from
- 13:16Speaker 3: ball one the do you know what? That's not how
- 13:20Speaker 3: to win came to Test cricket. But you've backed it.
- 13:23Speaker 3: You've backed it, you've backed it, you've backed it. Are
- 13:25Speaker 3: you now two deep games deep into an ash you
- 13:28Speaker 3: series said you're what, Maybe it's not the right philosophy
- 13:32Speaker 3: and you have to soak up pressure. You have to
- 13:34Speaker 3: earn the right to go out and put pressure onto
- 13:37Speaker 3: the Australians.
- 13:37Speaker 2: You have to win them important times.
- 13:40Speaker 3: And winning the important times might be saying, you know what,
- 13:42Speaker 3: You've bowled fifteen olivers and you haven't got a wicket.
- 13:45Speaker 3: And now the ball's older, the bawlers are tired, they're
- 13:49Speaker 3: getting into the second and third spells, the thirds and
- 13:51Speaker 3: four spells. The wicket's not doing as much because of
- 13:55Speaker 3: the old ball, because of the fatigue of the ballers.
- 13:58Speaker 3: I can now then go out and dominate and I
- 14:01Speaker 3: can score and they can catch up with that.
- 14:03Speaker 2: You've got five days to play with.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Look, we didn't play with three of the games days
- 14:08Speaker 3: in the first Test match. We've had a full day
- 14:11Speaker 3: of the last Test match. So it's not the fact
- 14:14Speaker 3: that we're running out of time. You can back deep.
- 14:17Speaker 3: You can say right then, let's build partnerships. And what
- 14:20Speaker 3: partnerships do is they demoralize the field inside, they lose
- 14:25Speaker 3: the intensity of the ball. You then go on, how
- 14:27Speaker 3: we're going to get a wicket? What we're gonna do.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Are we gonna have to change our plans as bowlers,
- 14:32Speaker 3: And that's when you start winning as a batter. That's
- 14:34Speaker 3: when the runs start coming freely. Australia have been putting
- 14:38Speaker 3: on partnerships and scoring freely because we haven't stuck to
- 14:41Speaker 3: our plans properly. Australia haven't been made to change their
- 14:47Speaker 3: plans because they've gone on and say, right, we're going
- 14:50Speaker 3: to pitch the ball up outside our stump and we
- 14:52Speaker 3: know you're gonna have a goal. Look at Olipope. It
- 14:56Speaker 3: one overcovers, the hit, one over the slips and then't
- 15:01Speaker 3: caught on bold. You can see it coming. As a bowler,
- 15:05Speaker 3: you're thinking, you know, all I've got to do is
- 15:06Speaker 3: put it there and I'm going to get a chance.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Whereas if you put it there to Steve Smith and
- 15:10Speaker 3: he's leaving it or Marcus alber Sheen, and he's leaving
- 15:12Speaker 3: it leaving it right. Then I've got to do something
- 15:14Speaker 3: different because I'm wasting my energy bowl in that bowl
- 15:18Speaker 3: and it's.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Looking pretty going to the keeper.
- 15:20Speaker 3: So what do i have to I'm going to have
- 15:22Speaker 3: to bowl straight and Steve Smith's thank you very much
- 15:24Speaker 3: and clich Off, there has to be a rethink.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Of how we go around building an innings.
- 15:31Speaker 3: We've got one player that of maybe two with Ben
- 15:35Speaker 3: Joe route plays situations. The rest of our batters are
- 15:39Speaker 3: just going out and trying to I say, run before
- 15:43Speaker 3: they can walk. They have to earn the right to
- 15:45Speaker 3: score runs in Australia.
- 15:47Speaker 2: I have to put in the hard yars.
- 15:48Speaker 3: They have to put in the time, and at the
- 15:50Speaker 3: moment we don't seem like we're capable of doing that.
- 15:54Speaker 1: There's one positive is that Joe scored that century year
- 15:57Speaker 1: old nemesis that he didn't dan in his career. He
- 16:02Speaker 1: would walk around the m c G naked. I think
- 16:04Speaker 1: everyone is breathing the side of relief he stored. No
- 16:09Speaker 1: one wanted to see that it was a magnificent Indians
- 16:13Speaker 1: from Joe because it was when you would have been
- 16:16Speaker 1: watching it it was it was superbian needs wasn't it
- 16:19Speaker 1: was not enough, not enough follow through and just I
- 16:24Speaker 1: guess a sign. It's a sign of what you can
- 16:26Speaker 1: be done if if you have the application.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Yeah, and what he got dropped, dropped till the doors lord,
- 16:33Speaker 3: chance to the to the.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Smith.
- 16:37Speaker 3: And if you need a bit of look, you can
- 16:40Speaker 3: ride a bit look. But once you've got that, you've
- 16:42Speaker 3: got to ride it. You've got to say, right there,
- 16:44Speaker 3: I'm going to make the opposition pay. We dropped five catches.
- 16:48Speaker 3: We dropped five catches in an innings? What's that doing?
- 16:54Speaker 3: We have players playing in a Pink Bowl game for
- 16:56Speaker 3: the very first time, And yes, you can say, right then,
- 16:59Speaker 3: we did all the practice under likes. We we did
- 17:03Speaker 3: intense fielding protessions. But in fielding sessions, you know the
- 17:06Speaker 3: balls coming to you.
- 17:07Speaker 2: You know that. Do you know what?
- 17:09Speaker 3: I've got four or five balls coming to me now,
- 17:11Speaker 3: and I've got to field them and throw them back.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I know it's my turn that the balls comeing to me.
- 17:16Speaker 2: It's not like that in a game.
- 17:17Speaker 3: You have to switch on and with the balls, but
- 17:21Speaker 3: where's the bat eating it?
- 17:22Speaker 2: Is it coming to me?
- 17:23Speaker 3: I can switch off again, and it's turning on and yes,
- 17:27Speaker 3: nobody means to drop catches, and yes they'll have done
- 17:30Speaker 3: all the work.
- 17:32Speaker 2: I can't remember the.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Golf that says that the harder the practice, the luckier
- 17:36Speaker 3: I get. Yea and the five intense training sessions that
- 17:42Speaker 3: that the training you've got to have match awareness. We
- 17:45Speaker 3: haven't got match awareness because we haven't played. That stems
- 17:51Speaker 3: back to India in a home Test match series. We
- 17:55Speaker 3: had the feistiness, which I love. I love a little
- 17:58Speaker 3: bit of our gabarge A little bit is need a
- 18:00Speaker 3: little bit. Let's make exciting because everybody wants to see
- 18:04Speaker 3: that players pushing boundaries and pushing each other's all right,
- 18:08Speaker 3: and then let's have we're the best of the best.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Let's let's show people why and that Neil helps.
- 18:14Speaker 3: But what also helps is winning games of cricket. And
- 18:19Speaker 3: yes we we have one games of cricket in the past,
- 18:25Speaker 3: but we're not winning the any of the battles at
- 18:30Speaker 3: the month. Australia are playing basic, basic cricket, not having
- 18:34Speaker 3: to do anything other than play play simple cricket. And
- 18:40Speaker 3: we are not playing the simple cricket. We are playing
- 18:44Speaker 3: a fast forward cricket that does not work in Australia.
- 18:51Speaker 1: We have metthewa joining us on the follow on podcast.
- 18:55Speaker 1: The disappointment or frustration if he's evident? What about the
- 18:59Speaker 1: reaction at home? What do you what? What? What I
- 19:03Speaker 1: mean that the I sat next to Mike Atherton in
- 19:05Speaker 1: the first Test. It was a couple of seats down
- 19:07Speaker 1: from me while we were riding away. When Joe Rouge
- 19:09Speaker 1: was out, I think you were four down and the
- 19:11Speaker 1: response was oh ship. Then things changed around and and
- 19:16Speaker 1: then when when when he'd written the next day that
- 19:19Speaker 1: England were on top of the test and he and
- 19:21Speaker 1: he was getting frustrated, going, oh god, people are going
- 19:23Speaker 1: to be waking up in the UK after the after
- 19:25Speaker 1: the horrors of day two in Perth and read me
- 19:28Speaker 1: saying that we're that England are on top and dominating
- 19:31Speaker 1: the Test, and they'll think I'm a fool once again.
- 19:34Speaker 1: But what's the reactor like around the streets? What you know?
- 19:37Speaker 1: People you're bumming into when you're doing your work? Yeah, telling,
- 19:41Speaker 1: you're selling you talk to people, you're chatting to me?
- 19:43Speaker 2: What's going on? Otherwise? Said? The optics don't look good.
- 19:47Speaker 3: The words coming out of the England come are not
- 19:51Speaker 3: doing themselves any favors whatsoever. We were as I said
- 19:56Speaker 3: on the last podcast, that build has been comments.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Do you know what we all said that you're not
- 20:03Speaker 2: preparing properly. No we are, they're not.
- 20:07Speaker 3: The fact that they lost in two days and instead
- 20:10Speaker 3: of practicing in a two ball game, and yes, the
- 20:14Speaker 3: week it has been completely different. It's going to be flat, slow,
- 20:17Speaker 3: it's not going to give you any beneficial but you can.
- 20:20Speaker 2: It's time in the middle.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Time to score some runs, time to get a rhythm,
- 20:23Speaker 3: time to get you time time to do you know,
- 20:26Speaker 3: this is how I score runs. This is how you
- 20:30Speaker 3: bowl line and length on a wicket. It's going to
- 20:32Speaker 3: be twenty two yards long. No matter where you play
- 20:35Speaker 3: the game, it's still going to be twenty two yards long.
- 20:38Speaker 3: The fact that they've lost another game and they're going
- 20:40Speaker 3: into a noose for a holiday, the fact that they
- 20:43Speaker 3: said that their own overtraining. If in anything, the optics
- 20:49Speaker 3: from the England camp and the language from the England
- 20:51Speaker 3: camp is not good.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Everybody just think, well, they're tossing it off.
- 20:55Speaker 3: They're out there for a good time and if it
- 20:57Speaker 3: don't come out, it's like you're playing under eleven cricket.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Don't matter.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Let's go, let's go again. Let's try hard the next game.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Let's try hard the next But you're trying hard is
- 21:06Speaker 3: not I'm not saying that they're not trying, but they're
- 21:11Speaker 3: not playing smart cricket. And that is the the fact
- 21:17Speaker 3: that they're not owning it and saying, you know what,
- 21:19Speaker 3: we've played ship shots to get ourselves out.
- 21:22Speaker 2: We're not taking time out in the middle.
- 21:23Speaker 3: We maybe we should have had a better warm up,
- 21:28Speaker 3: but you are going to be judged on your results.
- 21:34Speaker 3: And I wish I could sit here and said, you
- 21:37Speaker 3: know what, we were wrong because the fact that you've
- 21:42Speaker 3: been playing brilliant cricket. Your your ballers have been fresh,
- 21:45Speaker 3: they have put the bats under pressure. We've scored lots
- 21:48Speaker 3: of runs very quickly, and we're winning games and we're
- 21:52Speaker 3: winning sessions with It's a very The good will is
- 21:59Speaker 3: a role. After the first Test match, it was, you know,
- 22:02Speaker 3: we were in a position to win that Test match.
- 22:04Speaker 2: We were one hundred and from.
- 22:05Speaker 3: One down and then we we handed it back to Australia.
- 22:11Speaker 3: We came into the second Test match, he said, you
- 22:12Speaker 3: know what, we're with a great chance of winning this
- 22:15Speaker 3: Test match because we had the belief and the the
- 22:22Speaker 3: ability to win the first Test match. We didn't look
- 22:25Speaker 3: in the game in the second and in the second
- 22:28Speaker 3: Test match and it is a long long way back
- 22:32Speaker 3: from from Australia. Now Cummins is fit again.
- 22:37Speaker 1: I was going to say the good news is looking
- 22:39Speaker 1: towards Adelaide installation. Respect if you've got pet Commons Street
- 22:43Speaker 1: turning Nathan Lyon, who is more than five hundred test week,
- 22:47Speaker 1: it's left it out, but he beounsuspecting for the Adelaide tests.
- 22:51Speaker 1: I guess as we sort of get towards just wrapping
- 22:53Speaker 1: up what happens with England. Does Josh Tung come in?
- 22:57Speaker 1: This Pot's coming? We saw the sucists with which you
- 23:00Speaker 1: talked about the line in the length, the one you
- 23:01Speaker 1: know low one thirties and took a ball and bans
- 23:06Speaker 1: back from the first day and he's Alex Carry after
- 23:09Speaker 1: the Stamps. Has clearly had an impact on where they
- 23:10Speaker 1: how they're playing Scott Bawland and he's been effective. You've
- 23:13Speaker 1: seen that. Is it Pots? Does he coming? Is it?
- 23:17Speaker 1: You know who who does come in? And what do
- 23:20Speaker 1: they do? Do they change it around?
- 23:22Speaker 3: Well, that's a good question because you've been picking for
- 23:26Speaker 3: the last two years and saying right, you're number one
- 23:29Speaker 3: spinner and then you don't pick We go in with
- 23:35Speaker 3: an old pace attack which hasn't worked. Unfortunately, Woody is out.
- 23:40Speaker 3: We bring Fisher in, Tongue takes wickets. He's more of
- 23:44Speaker 3: a picture up Tyler ball. But you then look at Adelaide,
- 23:47Speaker 3: which is historically one of the flattered, flatter wickets in Australia.
- 23:51Speaker 3: That turns a little bit right, then who's the spinner?
- 23:53Speaker 3: Are we Are we going from Jack and putting Busher
- 23:56Speaker 3: back in because we might need a frontline spinner. Are
- 23:59Speaker 3: we going to stick with Chat? That's if you were winning.
- 24:04Speaker 3: It's a breeze, isn't it? The selection isn't who's batting
- 24:08Speaker 3: at three? Are we going to stick with the pope?
- 24:11Speaker 3: And said, you know, let's rain it in a little bit.
- 24:14Speaker 3: And I wish I had the answers. But the squad
- 24:21Speaker 3: out there has to be the people that play. And
- 24:23Speaker 3: you've picked them that squad for a reason because of
- 24:26Speaker 3: the best fourteen players that you've got in the country,
- 24:32Speaker 3: and you've picked the best six players to up to
- 24:35Speaker 3: back one to six, So they're not in confidence, confidence
- 24:39Speaker 3: and mindset and You're going to have to go around
- 24:42Speaker 3: and look people in the eye and say right, they
- 24:43Speaker 3: know you do you believe you can can score runs.
- 24:46Speaker 3: And there's going to be some hopefully some tough conversations
- 24:51Speaker 3: being had in that in that changing groups, a fight
- 24:56Speaker 3: coming out of the England camp and saying right that
- 24:58Speaker 3: the intensity that was was shown in that short period
- 25:02Speaker 3: at the end from the bowlers run up, hit that
- 25:06Speaker 3: length hard, put the pressure back on, put the pressure
- 25:10Speaker 3: on the batsman for the full However many overs it
- 25:14Speaker 3: takes you, not just the first ten overs. However many
- 25:17Speaker 3: overs it takes you put the batsman under pressure. And
- 25:21Speaker 3: when you're batting it doesn't matter if I mean, what
- 25:24Speaker 3: was that We've been beating for seventy overs, seventy overs
- 25:28Speaker 3: and innings. How do you win Test cricket by batting
- 25:31Speaker 3: seventy overs and innans? You don't, so find a way
- 25:34Speaker 3: of batting longer.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Last one for you, three o'clock, three am, four am
- 25:40Speaker 1: next Wednesday morning in London. Are you rolling over when
- 25:44Speaker 1: the alarm goes off and chicking the phone and rolling
- 25:46Speaker 1: back to bed? Or are you or are you yes?
- 25:51Speaker 1: We are becking it?
- 25:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna wait until I wake up,
- 25:55Speaker 2: and then I'm gonna look at.
- 25:56Speaker 3: The score and then I'll make it just cough from there.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Look, I really appreciate you coming on again. It is
- 26:05Speaker 1: it was a ball and look, I hope you don't know.
- 26:06Speaker 1: We might even come back to UH for for the
- 26:09Speaker 1: review review if we get if we get to that
- 26:15Speaker 1: stage and as five zero, you might have as much
- 26:16Speaker 1: he left as I've got on top of the head.
- 26:18Speaker 1: But I really appreciate you joining the follow on. Been
- 26:26Speaker 1: a pleasure, always, always a thrilled Thank you so much,
- 26:29Speaker 1: just always
