- 0:00Speaker 1: Is tough, and it's emotionally hard, especially when you can't
- 0:03Speaker 1: do the one thing like you love doing. But just remember,
- 0:06Speaker 1: like I feel like I've done the sports so long,
- 0:08Speaker 1: like I can stuck back and be like, Yep, there
- 0:09Speaker 1: are highs and lows in it. It's like the most
- 0:11Speaker 1: cliche thing to say, but it's true. And so if
- 0:13Speaker 1: you're on a low right now, just remember what comes next,
- 0:16Speaker 1: because like it's just it's part of it. It's part
- 0:18Speaker 1: of the whole journey. It's part of Not so I'm cheesy,
- 0:20Speaker 1: but it is. I know so many people actually who've
- 0:23Speaker 1: had some other highest ties after their lowest lows.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Hey everyone, Emily a body here coming to you live
- 0:42Speaker 2: from the AG studio and you are listening to another
- 0:46Speaker 2: installment of Hurdle Moment from Hurdle a While. On this
- 0:49Speaker 2: focus podcast, reconnect with everyone from your favorite athletes to
- 0:52Speaker 2: top experts and industry CEOs about their highest ties, toughest moments,
- 0:56Speaker 2: and everything in between. We all go through hurdles in life,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and my goal through these discussions is to empower you
- 1:03Speaker 2: to better navigate yours and move with intentions so that
- 1:06Speaker 2: you can stride towards your own big potential and of
- 1:09Speaker 2: course have some fun along the way. Today I am
- 1:14Speaker 2: talking about a topic near and dear to my heart
- 1:16Speaker 2: after the last give or take two three months, and
- 1:19Speaker 2: that is injury. As many of you know, I navigated
- 1:23Speaker 2: some difficult injuries this year which side tracked my plans
- 1:27Speaker 2: to run the London Marathon, and so I figured that
- 1:30Speaker 2: it was about time we talk a little bit more
- 1:32Speaker 2: about injury, about navigating injury, and what better way to
- 1:36Speaker 2: do that than to call in another amazing human. That
- 1:41Speaker 2: amazing human is Emily Sisson. She's been on the show before.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I'll link her first episode in the show notes, but
- 1:49Speaker 2: let me talk up m's amazingness. She is a professional
- 1:52Speaker 2: runner for New Balance. She's also an Olympian, and we
- 1:55Speaker 2: were able to catch up while she was in town
- 1:58Speaker 2: for the New York City Marathon. Now em and I
- 2:02Speaker 2: again have injury in common, and that she was slated
- 2:06Speaker 2: to run the New York Tokny Marathon and had to
- 2:08Speaker 2: pull out because she is dealing with an injury of
- 2:11Speaker 2: her own. Now, the good news is that, like me,
- 2:13Speaker 2: she's on the comeback and we're going to talk all
- 2:15Speaker 2: about this today. But like I said to her, today's
- 2:17Speaker 2: episode I was really impressed with her tenacity, with her optimism.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I mean, she came to New York to watch the
- 2:25Speaker 2: marathon despite not being able to run it, and I
- 2:27Speaker 2: told her that I really admire that. I really admire
- 2:30Speaker 2: that she has such a great attitude and outlook on
- 2:34Speaker 2: not only where she's come from, but most importantly, where
- 2:37Speaker 2: she is going today. Emily offers up her best advice
- 2:40Speaker 2: or anyone that may be struggling with injury, and also
- 2:43Speaker 2: shares her plans for the future and how she has
- 2:46Speaker 2: been able to keep a positive outlook even when she's
- 2:50Speaker 2: been feeling a little bit down. We also chat about
- 2:53Speaker 2: how she navigated this injury which started to flare up
- 2:56Speaker 2: before the Summer Olympics, and we're into people she's gotten
- 3:01Speaker 2: her corner to help her stay positive in the day
- 3:04Speaker 2: to day. A huge thank you to Emily for all
- 3:06Speaker 2: of her wisdom and of course her time. It was
- 3:09Speaker 2: so great to have her here in person in the
- 3:12Speaker 2: Hurdle studio. Mad sure you're following along with the show
- 3:15Speaker 2: over on Socials, It's at Hurdle Podcast. I am over
- 3:18Speaker 2: at Emily a body and with that, let's get to
- 3:21Speaker 2: hurdling today. I'm sitting down with Emily Sisson Irl. Welcome
- 3:34Speaker 2: to the Hurdle Studio.
- 3:35Speaker 1: M thank you, thanks for having me. I love your studio.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It's amazing.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I'm like elated because I felt like when we first
- 3:43Speaker 2: recorded it was like we would never come out of
- 3:46Speaker 2: this moment. And I think it was December twenty twenty maybe.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And man, what a time it was the day actually
- 3:53Speaker 1: after the election. I remember because I didn't sleep, like
- 3:56Speaker 1: I slept three hours and we were recording this, and
- 3:58Speaker 1: I'm like, why did I schedule this after election day?
- 4:03Speaker 2: Is that you don't usually think about? Yes, wow, If
- 4:07Speaker 2: that isn't a sign of the times. Well, I'm so
- 4:09Speaker 2: excited to be back with you this week. We are
- 4:12Speaker 2: here New York City Marathon weekend. This will be coming
- 4:16Speaker 2: out not that far afterward, but it's just such a
- 4:19Speaker 2: beautiful moment to be in New York right now. Have
- 4:21Speaker 2: you been traveling a lot outside of this.
- 4:23Speaker 1: No, not too much. A little bit. I mean, compared
- 4:25Speaker 1: to last year, I've been traveling more, but it is
- 4:27Speaker 1: nice kind of getting back into the swing of things
- 4:29Speaker 1: and feeling that bit of normalcy returning.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Yeah, oh my god, what a time New York City Marathon.
- 4:36Speaker 2: We're traveling again, we're here. What else is on deck
- 4:39Speaker 2: while you're here this weekend?
- 4:41Speaker 1: A few things actually, I've got a couple things with
- 4:44Speaker 1: mainly New Balance, doing a lot with them while I'm here.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And then yeah, it's sitting to watch the marathon and
- 4:50Speaker 1: the hunting back Sunday.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Yeah, well this eases us into what we're going to
- 4:54Speaker 2: talk about today because originally you were going to run
- 4:57Speaker 2: the New York City Marathon. So this is something that
- 4:59Speaker 2: you and I are going to really jive on today
- 5:02Speaker 2: because I don't know if you were in the loop,
- 5:04Speaker 2: but I was supposed to run the London Marathon and
- 5:06Speaker 2: then didn't because I got injured, And so you and
- 5:10Speaker 2: I can definitely relate on like how difficult that is
- 5:13Speaker 2: to have to kind of pull back on something that
- 5:15Speaker 2: you were hoping to do.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not easy and it's not fun, but it
- 5:19Speaker 1: is part of the sport and it's something i'd say
- 5:21Speaker 1: most runners that have been in that situation before, so
- 5:25Speaker 1: very relatable.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Yeah, no, very relatable. But it's also for me. I mean,
- 5:29Speaker 2: so I didn't end up going to London. I went
- 5:31Speaker 2: on like a you know, completely different euro trip instead.
- 5:34Speaker 2: But for you to be here this weekend. How does
- 5:37Speaker 2: that feel?
- 5:38Speaker 1: I was thinking about that actually when the plane landed
- 5:41Speaker 1: and I was just like driving through the city last night.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I thought like maybe I'd be feeling like a bit
- 5:46Speaker 1: of fomo, like sad I'm not racing, But I'm actually
- 5:49Speaker 1: just so excited, really excited to be here. I'm excited
- 5:52Speaker 1: for the return of major marathons, and I'm just so
- 5:55Speaker 1: excited for this weekend and then races that I have
- 5:59Speaker 1: in my future. So actually, like I thought i'd be
- 6:02Speaker 1: feeling like a little like maybe sad, or like wishing
- 6:05Speaker 1: I was racing, but I'm actually just really excited. I'm
- 6:07Speaker 1: not really experiencing that for some reason.
- 6:09Speaker 2: No, I mean that makes me happy to hear that
- 6:12Speaker 2: your food almost like, because I did think about that.
- 6:15Speaker 2: I thought a lot about like if I still wanted
- 6:17Speaker 2: to go to London and what that would like, if
- 6:20Speaker 2: I would feel that fomo. And I think maybe you're
- 6:23Speaker 2: you've been dealing with this for a minute now, so
- 6:26Speaker 2: why don't we give some more context first, So talk
- 6:28Speaker 2: to us about what you're navigating now.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Yes, so for about the past three months, since approximately
- 6:37Speaker 1: like two and a half weeks before the Tokyo Olympics,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I injured my knee and I've been rehabbing that ever since,
- 6:44Speaker 1: and I'm getting there. I've definitely turned a corner and
- 6:47Speaker 1: I'm feeling pretty good. But it's been like a long
- 6:50Speaker 1: road and I'm hoping to start working out again in
- 6:52Speaker 1: like a week or two. But yeah, the long patient road. Yeah.
- 6:57Speaker 2: So if you don't mind me asking, what kind of
- 7:00Speaker 2: knee injury messing.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Way, Yeah, right now, it seems to be my t
- 7:04Speaker 1: VAN that I'm still dealing a little bit with. But
- 7:06Speaker 1: it was actually like a few different things, and it
- 7:08Speaker 1: was kind of hard to pinpoint which one was causing
- 7:10Speaker 1: the symptoms and the pain because it was actually with me.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Sometimes that's what happens. It's a few different things going on.
- 7:18Speaker 1: It's not my first time I've had knee pain or
- 7:20Speaker 1: knee issues, so I actually know what to look out
- 7:23Speaker 1: for and I know how to manage it, and I
- 7:26Speaker 1: know what is I'm able to run through and what
- 7:28Speaker 1: I'm not pretty well at this point. But yeah, it
- 7:32Speaker 1: started about two and a half weeks before the Tokyo Olympics.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I was on a run and I just landed funny
- 7:41Speaker 1: and I felt like some sharp pain and I tried
- 7:44Speaker 1: to finish the run and was like I knew it.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Like sometimes you're like it's hard to tell when things
- 7:50Speaker 1: come on like slowly, but I knew I was running. Funny,
- 7:52Speaker 1: I knew I like had a limp, and I like
- 7:56Speaker 1: gave it like a day, tried to run again, and
- 7:58Speaker 1: then it was pretty clear I crossed that line of like, oh,
- 8:02Speaker 1: this is something you know you need to take care of,
- 8:06Speaker 1: and I feel like I'm jumping around a bit. But
- 8:09Speaker 1: I was in Providence training at the time, and like
- 8:11Speaker 1: the very next day hopped on a plane to Phoenix
- 8:13Speaker 1: to see my chiropractor so that I could make it
- 8:15Speaker 1: to the start line at the Olympics.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:17Speaker 1: And that was pretty much the last like two and
- 8:20Speaker 1: a half weeks before Tokyo was just like the focus
- 8:23Speaker 1: of getting to the line, yeah, and then performing as
- 8:26Speaker 1: well as I could. To you, it wasn't just like
- 8:27Speaker 1: starting the race. I wanted to be able to like compete,
- 8:30Speaker 1: and so it was a lot of decision making, a
- 8:32Speaker 1: lot of just managing symptoms and tracking them, and a
- 8:38Speaker 1: lot of that kind of took up the last bit
- 8:40Speaker 1: of my Olympic build up. Yeah.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Oh, I can totally relate to that like moment
- 8:45Speaker 2: where you're like, something doesn't feel right here, yeah, and
- 8:48Speaker 2: asking yourself like is this just feeling off? Or like
- 8:51Speaker 2: is this does this feel like? If I keep going
- 8:54Speaker 2: right now, I could be doing more dances to my body.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Yes.
- 8:58Speaker 2: And I think that that's like a moment of realization
- 9:00Speaker 2: that a lot of individuals struggle with, right it is, Yeah,
- 9:03Speaker 2: having almost the emotional maturity maybe to be like, Okay,
- 9:08Speaker 2: this is bigger than this moment right here, So if
- 9:11Speaker 2: I take a step back, then I could be doing
- 9:13Speaker 2: myself a service in the long haul exactly.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Yeah. And sometimes, like it is tricky knowing yourself because
- 9:22Speaker 1: sometimes especially when things come on very gradually, it's hard
- 9:25Speaker 1: to know when you cross that line versus of like
- 9:28Speaker 1: oh something just feels a little tight to oh no,
- 9:30Speaker 1: this is like not good. I knew my body pretty
- 9:34Speaker 1: well then, and I knew when something was wrong. But
- 9:37Speaker 1: coming back from the injury, I've actually had to rely
- 9:40Speaker 1: a bit on my chiropractor and also my husband, because like,
- 9:44Speaker 1: I'll have days where I feel better than I felt
- 9:46Speaker 1: last week, but I'll ask my husband on a run,
- 9:49Speaker 1: I'm like, well, how am I moving? Like do I
- 9:50Speaker 1: look okay? And a month. He's like, no, it's like
- 9:56Speaker 1: you don't you still don't look great, but like I
- 9:59Speaker 1: need that for you back, because sometimes like your mind
- 10:01Speaker 1: can like play tricks on you a bit, and I'm like, oh,
- 10:04Speaker 1: I actually feel better, and he's like, you're still not
- 10:06Speaker 1: ready to like hop back into normal training. You definitely
- 10:10Speaker 1: still have a bit of a limp. And so that's
- 10:12Speaker 1: what I do love about having my husband there when
- 10:14Speaker 1: I'm running, because he can tell me afterwards, like he'll
- 10:17Speaker 1: give me honest feedback, and that's what I need. So
- 10:20Speaker 1: sometimes having like someone to rely on like that, I
- 10:23Speaker 1: found that to be kind of helpful this time.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, And I mean for you to experience this
- 10:28Speaker 2: two weeks before Tokyo, this is coming off of and
- 10:30Speaker 2: I was there to watch you like the most unbelievable
- 10:33Speaker 2: performance in the time Kay in Oregon. And so to
- 10:38Speaker 2: come to this point before the Olympics, talk to us
- 10:40Speaker 2: about like where your emotional state was when stuff started
- 10:44Speaker 2: to feel a little bit off.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Yeah, emotionally I was actually okay. I feel like emotionally
- 10:50Speaker 1: it was tougher afterwards because I think in the moment,
- 10:53Speaker 1: I'm just so like, Okay, what do I need to do?
- 10:56Speaker 1: To get to the starting line, and everything was just
- 10:58Speaker 1: so like just down to like focusing, like taking kind
- 11:03Speaker 1: of emotion out of it and just making the best
- 11:05Speaker 1: decisions I could at the time, because we had a
- 11:07Speaker 1: weigh a lot of different things, Like, for example, we
- 11:12Speaker 1: weren't sure if I should be doing workouts or not
- 11:14Speaker 1: because it was wasn't great, but I was concerned if
- 11:17Speaker 1: I didn't like get my legs turning over at race
- 11:20Speaker 1: pace a little bit, that like if three weeks went
- 11:23Speaker 1: by and I was on the start line, then my
- 11:25Speaker 1: body like wouldn't be able to either get through the race,
- 11:29Speaker 1: but then also like it wouldn't really recognize race pace.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So that was something we kind of weighed, was Okay,
- 11:34Speaker 1: well we need to do something, but how much? And
- 11:38Speaker 1: should we do cool downs after workouts, take the next
- 11:40Speaker 1: day off even like flying the twelve hour flight or whatever.
- 11:44Speaker 1: It was like that was something we had to like
- 11:47Speaker 1: like plan for because I had swelling in my knees.
- 11:50Speaker 1: So we're like of long flights probably not going to
- 11:53Speaker 1: help that. So what can we do to minimize that
- 11:55Speaker 1: and help you come off the flight feeling Okay?
- 11:57Speaker 2: What did you do? Well?
- 12:00Speaker 1: Luckily, like I am pretty lucky New Balance did offer
- 12:04Speaker 1: to upgrade my flight, so I was able to like
- 12:06Speaker 1: lie flat for most of it instead of like sitting
- 12:09Speaker 1: with like my knees bent for the twelve hours. And
- 12:12Speaker 1: then yeah, I just kind of gave myself a day
- 12:14Speaker 1: once I landed to kind of like let my body
- 12:19Speaker 1: like feel okay, and I tested out running like the
- 12:22Speaker 1: second day I was in Tokyo, and I actually didn't
- 12:24Speaker 1: feel too bad. But my runs were pretty short at
- 12:26Speaker 1: that time, right, I was doing so much prehab and
- 12:29Speaker 1: so much like activation and stuff before running, and my
- 12:32Speaker 1: runs were actually so short. But the whole focus was
- 12:35Speaker 1: just to keep my body moving well. And I got
- 12:39Speaker 1: a lot of confidence off doing like these short abbreviated
- 12:42Speaker 1: workouts of like two or three reps like that gave
- 12:44Speaker 1: me confidence I could get through the race. But yeah,
- 12:48Speaker 1: but to be clear, I did have a ton of help.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I probably wouldn't have been able to do this if
- 12:51Speaker 1: I wasn't getting treatment every day and having people I
- 12:54Speaker 1: checked in with every day. So yeah, it was like
- 12:57Speaker 1: it caught it with me afterwards though, day after the
- 13:00Speaker 1: race and when I landed, like back in the US,
- 13:03Speaker 1: like all I wanted to do was like sleep, I
- 13:06Speaker 1: was so so emotionally dreamed.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I was so tired. Yeah, And I mean there's
- 13:10Speaker 2: two things to double click on here. The first thing
- 13:12Speaker 2: you mentioned prehab, and that is something as well as
- 13:16Speaker 2: warming up that so many professionals we'll talk about how
- 13:20Speaker 2: integrol it is to their routine, but for the everyday
- 13:23Speaker 2: runner like me, a lot of us are like, well,
- 13:26Speaker 2: it'll be fine, Like I'll just use the first part
- 13:28Speaker 2: of my run to do this obviously, like this like
- 13:30Speaker 2: this is your profession, so like you've kind of learned
- 13:33Speaker 2: how to master this. But do you remember maybe a
- 13:36Speaker 2: point in your running journey where you started to really
- 13:40Speaker 2: realize how integral that warm up and the prehab really
- 13:43Speaker 2: were for you.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't know if there was one specific point,
- 13:47Speaker 1: but I'd say like as I got older and as
- 13:49Speaker 1: like the training got harder and more intense and the
- 13:53Speaker 1: level I was competing at as that went up, I
- 13:56Speaker 1: found it was like pretty key to stay on top
- 13:58Speaker 1: of that stuff because little injuries like I kind of
- 14:02Speaker 1: want to minimize or I want to minimize big and
- 14:04Speaker 1: little injuries. So I've started working with a lot of people.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I trust you can give me good advice on what
- 14:10Speaker 1: to do before run, and even now, like or even
- 14:14Speaker 1: when I'm healthy, I probably do like twenty minutes of
- 14:17Speaker 1: like foam rolling mobility like activation before I run. And
- 14:21Speaker 1: I know most people probably don't have time for that
- 14:23Speaker 1: every single run, but even like like a few things
- 14:27Speaker 1: here and there, like if like you only have five
- 14:30Speaker 1: minutes before you go out the door, if I were
- 14:32Speaker 1: ten minutes, you can do a couple like ankle drills
- 14:34Speaker 1: or like things to like warm up your feed and
- 14:37Speaker 1: your toes, like like if that's your weak spot. But yeah,
- 14:40Speaker 1: I had a lot of guidance in figuring out what
- 14:42Speaker 1: I need, and even when I'm healthy, I always do
- 14:45Speaker 1: like before runs and after runs a bit of work.
- 14:49Speaker 2: You know what my new thing is. I make an
- 14:51Speaker 2: espresso first thing in the morning, almost every morning, the
- 14:54Speaker 2: roundio for anyone that's own that really wants to know,
- 14:57Speaker 2: And I'll stand at my kitchen island and do the
- 15:00Speaker 2: alphabet with both of my feet like one. I'll just
- 15:04Speaker 2: I mean, I'm sipping my whatever, I'm sipping my n
- 15:07Speaker 2: espresso for a total of like two minutes before I
- 15:10Speaker 2: start doing other things and then like come back to it.
- 15:11Speaker 2: But in those two minutes, I'll stand there and just
- 15:13Speaker 2: do like some inkle stuff. I've never had ankle problems,
- 15:16Speaker 2: but I'm like, in these two minutes, what else am
- 15:18Speaker 2: I doing besides like maybe looking at my phone.
- 15:20Speaker 1: And even if you don't have ankle problems, things can
- 15:22Speaker 1: like work up the chain. So if your ankles are
- 15:24Speaker 1: really stiff, which mine I can get pretty stiff, it
- 15:26Speaker 1: can cause me pain, it can cause hip pain if
- 15:29Speaker 1: you're not getting great like I don't have great door
- 15:31Speaker 1: selection like, so actually, even if you don't have problems,
- 15:35Speaker 1: it's still good to do that.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Stuff, definitely. And you also said something that I love,
- 15:39Speaker 2: which is like a bunch of little things can add
- 15:41Speaker 2: up to a big thing. And that's so applicable, not
- 15:44Speaker 2: just when we're talking about injury, but like even small
- 15:47Speaker 2: steps in the right direction can make a big difference
- 15:49Speaker 2: in the long term. So when we talk about perhaps
- 15:52Speaker 2: like going after a goal like running your first mile,
- 15:54Speaker 2: running a five k, even you know, bigger than that
- 15:58Speaker 2: getting out there for like that first run, or getting
- 16:00Speaker 2: out there to do like commit to something, committing to
- 16:03Speaker 2: yourself one day. If you keep doing that day in
- 16:05Speaker 2: and day out, then you're going to see the payoff
- 16:07Speaker 2: of that over time.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, then thought's a nice thing about running, Like
- 16:10Speaker 1: what you like put into it, you get out of it.
- 16:13Speaker 1: And I know, like injuries like they are part of
- 16:15Speaker 1: it that does happen. But if you stay in the
- 16:18Speaker 1: sport long enough, like you're going to see those games.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Yeah for sure. And the other thing that I wanted
- 16:23Speaker 2: to double click on, you were talking about how great
- 16:26Speaker 2: it is to have the right support team around you,
- 16:29Speaker 2: and I think that, especially when it comes to injury,
- 16:31Speaker 2: it can be so so hard to be like, yeah,
- 16:35Speaker 2: I need help, Yeah I can't do this by myself,
- 16:38Speaker 2: and it's almost like you kind of have to put
- 16:41Speaker 2: your ego aside to get to where you want to be.
- 16:43Speaker 2: And so often it's almost as if we associate reaching
- 16:47Speaker 2: out for help or asking for help or admitting that
- 16:50Speaker 2: you can't do it alone as a sign of weakness,
- 16:53Speaker 2: when in actuality, reaching out and like looking for that
- 16:57Speaker 2: extra hand can be the thing that actually helps get
- 16:59Speaker 2: you too where you want to be.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Oh definitely, yeah. I know when I was younger, especially,
- 17:04Speaker 1: that's how I felt. I didn't want to ask for help.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I wanted to be excelf sufficient and like you know,
- 17:09Speaker 1: everyone needs help, like like you can't do everything alone
- 17:13Speaker 1: and like having that support system you can lean on
- 17:15Speaker 1: when you need it, and then also being that support
- 17:17Speaker 1: system for your teammates and other people when they need it.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Like this is a whole community, Like it works, like
- 17:23Speaker 1: like you get further together. So yeah, yeah, I think,
- 17:28Speaker 1: like I don't know if there was like a moment
- 17:29Speaker 1: when it clicked for me, but like I definitely feel
- 17:31Speaker 1: a lot more comfortable asking for help now than I
- 17:33Speaker 1: did probably like five or six years ago.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to talk to you
- 17:43Speaker 2: about my sponsors. First up, Green Chef. Green Chef is
- 17:48Speaker 2: the first USDA certified organic meal kit, which means that

- 18:17Speaker 2: mode right now as it's getting a little cooler outside.
- 18:20Speaker 2: And also, oh my god, the flavor on the Peruvian
- 18:23Speaker 2: style beef bowls that I made Chef's Kiss with sweet
- 18:27Speaker 2: potatoes and bell pepper and cabbage tomato, oh so so good.

- 19:31Speaker 2: personal favorites a style that they have called the mock
- 19:33Speaker 2: G's in the Operation Blackout. It's like a super sleek
- 19:37Speaker 2: all black aviator style. Or their circle G's. They've got
- 19:40Speaker 2: a style called the nine dollars pour over. I feel
- 19:44Speaker 2: super trending in them. Like I said, obsessed with Gooder's,
- 19:49Speaker 2: and they make an amazing gift, especially at their low
- 19:52Speaker 2: price point. And best part of this, you can get

- 20:27Speaker 2: And I feel like a week or two ago, I
- 20:29Speaker 2: was having a conversation that was on the show. We
- 20:31Speaker 2: did a panel at Lululemon, and one of the men
- 20:34Speaker 2: was talking about that the most difficult part of being
- 20:37Speaker 2: injured sometimes is that withdraw that happens almost immediately from
- 20:42Speaker 2: your community, right and for so many of us. I mean,
- 20:45Speaker 2: I certainly identify as a runner. Obviously you do, it's
- 20:48Speaker 2: your profession. But for you, when you had to slowly
- 20:52Speaker 2: kind of pull back on your workouts and you said,
- 20:55Speaker 2: like you're almost just now getting back into them, right,
- 20:59Speaker 2: how did that feel for you as someone who really
- 21:02Speaker 2: does like hold a big part of your identity it
- 21:05Speaker 2: as being a runner.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Well, so for me, it I it definitely could see.
- 21:11Speaker 1: It was harder for me in college when I was
- 21:12Speaker 1: part of a team, whereas right now it's just me
- 21:14Speaker 1: and my husband that do workouts together. And like the
- 21:17Speaker 1: other day, we were saying we miss our workout days.
- 21:19Speaker 1: We would go like to the track or to like
- 21:21Speaker 1: one of the canals in Phoenix do a workout. Then
- 21:23Speaker 1: we'd go get brunch together and it's just kind of
- 21:25Speaker 1: nice and we're like, we miss those, but we know
- 21:28Speaker 1: they're coming back soon. But when you're part of a
- 21:30Speaker 1: team and like it's a big part of your life
- 21:32Speaker 1: and like your social life too, I like that was harder.
- 21:36Speaker 1: And so I think for me what helped in college
- 21:38Speaker 1: when I felt like I wasn't part of the team
- 21:40Speaker 1: when I was injured. Not that you wish ill on
- 21:43Speaker 1: other people, but usually there's someone else that's injured at
- 21:45Speaker 1: the same time. And so if you can find one
- 21:48Speaker 1: partner to like cross train with, like to go out
- 21:51Speaker 1: and like bike ride with and then go get brunch afterwards.
- 21:54Speaker 1: It's not the same thing as doing like a long
- 21:56Speaker 1: run and like getting brunch. Like I'm not going to
- 21:58Speaker 1: say like I love like cycling as much as I
- 22:00Speaker 1: love running, because I definitely don't want. But you know,
- 22:04Speaker 1: like it just like it gives you something. It gives
- 22:07Speaker 1: you like a good enough replacement, a temporary replacement to
- 22:11Speaker 1: get out and get like yourself moving and knowing like
- 22:14Speaker 1: just remember it's like it's only temporary, like you are
- 22:17Speaker 1: going to get backgrounning. You're going to get back working out,
- 22:21Speaker 1: like it doesn't last forever, so kind of keeping that
- 22:24Speaker 1: in mind and just having like one I've always been
- 22:26Speaker 1: a person that really only needs like one or two
- 22:28Speaker 1: other like close friends to do things with, and I'm
- 22:31Speaker 1: like pretty happy with that if I have someone else
- 22:34Speaker 1: to connect with. So if you can find someone else
- 22:36Speaker 1: that like wants to meet up, and I don't know
- 22:38Speaker 1: what other forms of cross train you can do, but
- 22:41Speaker 1: like a lyft to go or something.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Like, it's yeah, I don't know whatever. And I also
- 22:46Speaker 2: feel like you can like make a date to just
- 22:48Speaker 2: do something right.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's to be exactly. Like that's the.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Thing like we because we like identify in this way.
- 22:54Speaker 2: It's almost as though it's like, well, well least people
- 22:57Speaker 2: want to do like other things with me, Like oh yeah,
- 22:59Speaker 2: you know. And it's funny because like you almost like
- 23:02Speaker 2: have a moment of pause where you're like, can we
- 23:04Speaker 2: do these other things? And it's like, yes, you can
- 23:05Speaker 2: do other things. You can. I mean we've already listed brunch,
- 23:08Speaker 2: but like even just like walking around the neighborhood or
- 23:10Speaker 2: like like pick a place that you've never been to
- 23:13Speaker 2: before that you want to like go both go like
- 23:15Speaker 2: try out if hiking is in your in your wheelhouse,
- 23:18Speaker 2: like you can do something like that. Finding a way
- 23:20Speaker 2: to still stay engaged with your people just because you
- 23:22Speaker 2: may not be able to do the thing that you
- 23:24Speaker 2: were doing before is like it's just critical.
- 23:27Speaker 1: One of the silver linings, although I don't love being injured,
- 23:30Speaker 1: is that I have been able to I have extra
- 23:32Speaker 1: time now that I don't usually have, so I've been
- 23:34Speaker 1: able to do things with family and friends I like
- 23:37Speaker 1: wouldn't have been able to do otherwise, so like it
- 23:40Speaker 1: doesn't have to be like cross straining, like you can
- 23:42Speaker 1: meet up with people and go like get brunch like
- 23:44Speaker 1: we said, or yeah, just like do anything. I don't know,
- 23:48Speaker 1: to do a pottery class or something.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Something like that. I remember for me when I so
- 23:53Speaker 2: I started to navigate my recent injury like on my
- 23:57Speaker 2: own in that I started to seek out expert opinions
- 24:00Speaker 2: when something fell off and I hadn't said anything and
- 24:03Speaker 2: had been like a week or so maybe on like
- 24:06Speaker 2: the socials, right, and so I finally like decide, I'm
- 24:10Speaker 2: like I'm going to fill them in that like something's
- 24:13Speaker 2: going on with my body. And I kind of did
- 24:16Speaker 2: this twice. The first time, I was like, I'm just
- 24:18Speaker 2: going to rip the band aid off and I'm going
- 24:20Speaker 2: to go live and just be like I don't know
- 24:22Speaker 2: what's going on with my body, but I'm dealing with
- 24:24Speaker 2: this thing. Whatever, Well, let me tell you when I
- 24:26Speaker 2: want to go do that. I was like hysterical, like
- 24:29Speaker 2: I was not emotionally equipped for like how I was
- 24:32Speaker 2: going to feel, because I felt like in that moment
- 24:34Speaker 2: it started to finally feel real for me, like I'm
- 24:37Speaker 2: going to have to let all these people know, like, hey,
- 24:39Speaker 2: something's up, and like you've probably noticed that I haven't
- 24:42Speaker 2: been like maybe living in the way that you're used
- 24:44Speaker 2: to seeing me kind of live my life. But I
- 24:46Speaker 2: just want to let you know because I know many
- 24:47Speaker 2: of you struggle with this as well when it came
- 24:50Speaker 2: to sharing with your following about the fact that you
- 24:53Speaker 2: had been navigating with this kind of wonkiness for a while. Now,
- 24:57Speaker 2: talk me through that experience and how that felt for you.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting because if I hadn't committed to New York,
- 25:03Speaker 1: I actually probably just wouldn't have said anything. It is
- 25:05Speaker 1: probably would have felt like a bit unnecessary because I
- 25:07Speaker 1: was able to get to the Olympics and compete still
- 25:11Speaker 1: and I still was really happy with my performance. I'm like, like,
- 25:14Speaker 1: I don't want to sound cocky, but I'm proud of that. Like,
- 25:17Speaker 1: I'm really proud of that. So if I, like, I
- 25:20Speaker 1: wish I could extend in my season one more race,
- 25:23Speaker 1: but if I hadn't committed to New York, I probab
- 25:25Speaker 1: wouldn't said anything. So at the time, I remember thinking, though,
- 25:29Speaker 1: like it probably is good to share this stuff, Like
- 25:32Speaker 1: it doesn't come naturally to me. It's not like my
- 25:34Speaker 1: first thought, but like, I don't know any runner that
- 25:39Speaker 1: this might be a double negative. I can't think of
- 25:40Speaker 1: a runner that hasn't dealt with an injury at some
- 25:43Speaker 1: point in their career. So, and it can, like I
- 25:46Speaker 1: think you mentioned earlier, it can feel like a lonely
- 25:48Speaker 1: experience when you're going through it. And so just to like,
- 25:51Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe no, you're not the only one
- 25:53Speaker 1: out there trying to find answers trying to get back running.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Who's kind of dealing with like training like normal? Uh,
- 26:02Speaker 1: Like maybe that can be a good thing to share that.
- 26:05Speaker 2: And I think that I remember when we recorded the
- 26:07Speaker 2: first time, you talked a lot about how you were
- 26:09Speaker 2: like trying to become a little bit more like open
- 26:12Speaker 2: and vulnerable. Yeah, and social media. So I would imagine
- 26:15Speaker 2: that in these instances when you do open up a
- 26:18Speaker 2: little bit more, it's probably met with like a really
- 26:20Speaker 2: great response. But then it's like every time you, like
- 26:23Speaker 2: you read a DM or you deal with someone, it's
- 26:25Speaker 2: like you have to continually keep processing like your feeling.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, I could see that. I've been so
- 26:31Speaker 1: bad with dms lately. I need to get that going
- 26:33Speaker 1: through them. But yeah, that's true, yeah, and that is
- 26:36Speaker 1: part of the heart. I think that is one of
- 26:37Speaker 1: the hard things about opening up is because I have
- 26:39Speaker 1: had a lot of people ask me for like advice
- 26:43Speaker 1: on like knee injuries because that's what I have. And
- 26:45Speaker 1: the thing is, everyone's actually so different, So I'm like,
- 26:47Speaker 1: I can speak from my personal experience, but just because
- 26:50Speaker 1: this works for me doesn't necessarily mean it's gonna work
- 26:53Speaker 1: for you too, because if that was the case, like,
- 26:57Speaker 1: no one would ever have a knee injury because we
- 26:59Speaker 1: know all the answers, or.
- 27:00Speaker 2: We wouldn't be like all flocking to different like physical therapists.
- 27:03Speaker 2: And I mean this point is just so important. I
- 27:05Speaker 2: like have very I have like the most random injury
- 27:08Speaker 2: right now, and that we think it's like a deep
- 27:09Speaker 2: so as muscle strain, like it's like it's bizarre. But
- 27:13Speaker 2: someone else like reaches out to me and they're like,
- 27:15Speaker 2: I've been having pain in my lower right abdomen too,
- 27:18Speaker 2: and I'm like, yeah, I'm not qualified to say anybody,
- 27:21Speaker 2: do please go speak to a physician, have someone touched,
- 27:24Speaker 2: get your hands on your body and like and really
- 27:27Speaker 2: feel it out. Because again, we're all such individuals and
- 27:30Speaker 2: it's something but I will also say this, I get
- 27:34Speaker 2: a lot of messages, and I mean, I'm sure with
- 27:36Speaker 2: you as well, Like most of my following is women
- 27:38Speaker 2: and from the women that are in a place where
- 27:41Speaker 2: that maybe they are on the injured list and they're
- 27:43Speaker 2: frustrated that they can't move their body and they're a
- 27:45Speaker 2: little worried about like how that's going to affect them
- 27:48Speaker 2: in the long haul. I kind of liked where you
- 27:50Speaker 2: were coming from just now. You were like, this is
- 27:52Speaker 2: just the chapter in my story and it happens to everyone.
- 27:56Speaker 2: I mean, any advice to those individuals that are like
- 27:59Speaker 2: frustrated with feeling stagnant.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean in the moment, it always feels like
- 28:04Speaker 1: the biggest deal in the world, But then it's so
- 28:07Speaker 1: interesting think of like a time you were injured like
- 28:09Speaker 1: a year or two ago, and like remember how that
- 28:12Speaker 1: felt going through it, and now looking back on it, it
- 28:14Speaker 1: just seems kind of like a blip, like and you're
- 28:16Speaker 1: like radar screen. And so not to downplay like it
- 28:20Speaker 1: is tough and it's emotionally like hard, especially when you
- 28:23Speaker 1: can't do the one thing like you love doing. But
- 28:25Speaker 1: just remember, like and I feel like I've been the
- 28:28Speaker 1: sports so long, like I can step back and be like, Yep,
- 28:30Speaker 1: there are highs and lows in it. It's like the
- 28:32Speaker 1: most cliche thing to say, but it's true. And so
- 28:34Speaker 1: if you're on a low right now, just remember what
- 28:36Speaker 1: comes next, because like it's just it's part of it.
- 28:39Speaker 1: It's part of the whole journey. It's part of not
- 28:41Speaker 1: sound cheesy, but it is. I know so many people
- 28:44Speaker 1: actually who've had some other highest ties after their lowest lows.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I feel like I've heard conversations and I've had them
- 28:49Speaker 1: with people where they're like, oh, I nearly quit the
- 28:51Speaker 1: sport a year ago, and now like I'm so glad
- 28:53Speaker 1: I didn't because like I just ran a pr I
- 28:56Speaker 1: just like finished my first marathon. I made the Olympics, like.
- 29:00Speaker 2: And like, these high moments can come in so many
- 29:03Speaker 2: different forms, right It's interesting. I mean, like, for example,
- 29:06Speaker 2: I was listening to a podcast this morning with Slane
- 29:10Speaker 2: and Slaine's talking about how right now a high for
- 29:12Speaker 2: her is like appreciating running in a whole new way.
- 29:15Speaker 2: And this appreciation of running has nothing to do with
- 29:17Speaker 2: like getting another Olympic medal or it's just like a
- 29:20Speaker 2: new appreciation of running with friends and like seeing in
- 29:23Speaker 2: a new way and experiencing it as a mom and
- 29:25Speaker 2: it's like, how cool is it that, Like we can
- 29:27Speaker 2: frame our perspective like that, Like we can take these
- 29:31Speaker 2: upswings after a dramatically low moment, a hurdle if you will,
- 29:35Speaker 2: and be like, Okay, right now, I have the opportunity
- 29:38Speaker 2: to experience this in a way that maybe is different
- 29:41Speaker 2: than before, but frame that in a way that can
- 29:44Speaker 2: really be giving back to me in this moment.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Yeah, feels like a relationship, like with running, that just
- 29:49Speaker 1: evolves over time. Your perspective and approach can change over years,
- 29:52Speaker 1: and it's a I think a very positive thing when
- 29:55Speaker 1: you can step back and look at it like that, like,
- 29:57Speaker 1: oh wow, like I'm enjoying in this whole like new way.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Yeah, No, perspective for sure, fresh perspective is always helpful.
- 30:04Speaker 2: So for you, now that you may be about to
- 30:08Speaker 2: get back into the swing of things, I think it's
- 30:09Speaker 2: a really good opportunity for us to talk about maybe
- 30:12Speaker 2: not taking on too much too soon, which can be
- 30:15Speaker 2: the thing that we're like tempted.
- 30:17Speaker 1: To do exactly.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, So for you, like, what will easing back
- 30:22Speaker 2: into the swing of things really look like.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Well, I will ease back in when my like I
- 30:27Speaker 1: have like a team of people. It's like three people
- 30:29Speaker 1: that I rely on, and when like we're all kind
- 30:31Speaker 1: of in agreement, like yep, it's like it's time you're
- 30:34Speaker 1: ready to ease back into it. I'll like get everyone's
- 30:38Speaker 1: like advice and opinions and then yeah, it'll just kind
- 30:42Speaker 1: of be like day by day, week by week seeing
- 30:45Speaker 1: how things go. But it is like nice, how I
- 30:48Speaker 1: said earlier, how I do always have my husband there
- 30:50Speaker 1: because if like I remember once I tried getting back
- 30:53Speaker 1: running and I was like doing a workout, I'm like
- 30:57Speaker 1: I feel okay, and Shean's like, no, like you should stop.
- 31:02Speaker 1: So if I have Shane there being like oh no,
- 31:04Speaker 1: like there might be a fuel kings we need to
- 31:06Speaker 1: work out still, Like, like I take what he says seriously.
- 31:09Speaker 1: So I have people I rely on that I'll just
- 31:11Speaker 1: kind of use them to kind of gauge how quickly
- 31:14Speaker 1: I get back into things if we need to take
- 31:16Speaker 1: steps back or if it's just like full speed ahead.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Long answer, just rely on my sports team.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Yeah, well Shane the chiropractor and who else my coach? Okay,
- 31:25Speaker 2: got it. It's uh, it's interesting because again, like someone
- 31:28Speaker 2: listening to this maybe more of an average Joe like me,
- 31:30Speaker 2: like doesn't have like, you know, the stellar support squad
- 31:33Speaker 2: in every aspect that you do. But here's this and
- 31:36Speaker 2: they're like, Okay, so maybe I should seek help. You
- 31:39Speaker 2: see a chiropractor. Have you ever? Is there a reason specifically,
- 31:43Speaker 2: like for the chiropractor over maybe going to a physical
- 31:46Speaker 2: therapist or like how did you find this relationship?
- 31:49Speaker 1: Yeah? So his name's John Ball. You probably have heard
- 31:51Speaker 1: him mentioned on a bunch of podcasts. I feel like
- 31:54Speaker 1: every professional runner's probably seen him. But yeah, he I
- 31:58Speaker 1: mean he's technically a chiropractor, but he does a lot
- 32:00Speaker 1: of like like physical therapy, like strength work. Like I
- 32:04Speaker 1: get like my whole like strength routine from him, Like
- 32:07Speaker 1: he kind of helps me figure out what my weaknesses are,
- 32:09Speaker 1: what I need to work on. And yeah, I don't know.
- 32:11Speaker 1: I just feel like he's had I've had the most
- 32:14Speaker 1: success like working with him, and so I'm so many
- 32:16Speaker 1: professional runners, so he's kind of like this behind the scenes. Yeah, man,
- 32:21Speaker 1: that just like helps a lot of us.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Right now, we talked about easying back into the swing
- 32:25Speaker 2: of things. Obviously we're here in New York, marathon weekend.
- 32:28Speaker 2: This is tabled for now. What do you kind of
- 32:30Speaker 2: foresee coming down the pipe for you?
- 32:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to do another marathon for sure, So
- 32:36Speaker 1: I think either this spring. I could wait until next fall,
- 32:40Speaker 1: but I kind of like i'd love to do one
- 32:42Speaker 1: in the spring. I don't know which one yet because
- 32:45Speaker 1: a lot of like the typical spring marathons, like I
- 32:48Speaker 1: know London's actually not happening in the spring, or that
- 32:50Speaker 1: would have been a fun one to do again, but
- 32:51Speaker 1: I heard that's in the fall next year, So yeah,
- 32:54Speaker 1: I don't know. I think probably spring marathon. I'd like
- 32:56Speaker 1: to run some fast halves, but hey, I'm not totally
- 33:01Speaker 1: done on the track, but I think I am done
- 33:03Speaker 1: with like full track seasons, so I might like hop
- 33:06Speaker 1: on for like usays here there. But yeah, I think
- 33:09Speaker 1: I'm going to kind of shift my focus to the
- 33:10Speaker 1: roads for the most part, and yeah, just see what
- 33:13Speaker 1: I can do there.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Man, shift your focus to the roads. When you say
- 33:17Speaker 2: a fast half marathon, just like give them some insight
- 33:20Speaker 2: as to like how fast your half marathon is.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Well, I'd love to go after the American record again.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Molly's I was like one second off of it in Valencia,
- 33:29Speaker 1: and I remember like when I crossed the finish line
- 33:32Speaker 1: saw that I was like, what one second over like
- 33:38Speaker 1: an hour and like seven and a half minutes, Like
- 33:40Speaker 1: that's crazy.
- 33:42Speaker 2: One other thing that I wanted to kind of rewind
- 33:44Speaker 2: and ask you about, obviously this year with the Olympics
- 33:47Speaker 2: being on like other Olympics in years past, with everything
- 33:50Speaker 2: that's going on in our world on top of that,
- 33:52Speaker 2: for you arriving there, having a little odd of a
- 33:56Speaker 2: build up for the last few weeks before beforehand, A
- 34:00Speaker 2: lot of athletes spoke about how lonely that experience was
- 34:03Speaker 2: at times because we couldn't see, they couldn't travel with
- 34:07Speaker 2: their conventional teams. For you navigating this injury at that
- 34:10Speaker 2: time and kind of being there without the entire support squad,
- 34:14Speaker 2: how was that?
- 34:15Speaker 1: Yeah, Actually, you know it worked out, Okay, I like
- 34:19Speaker 1: talked to pretty much my support squad every day, so
- 34:22Speaker 1: that helped. But yeah, I'm used I work with my
- 34:25Speaker 1: coach Ray remotely anyway. He lives in Providence or he
- 34:28Speaker 1: lives in Rhode Island and I'm in Arizona, so I'm
- 34:31Speaker 1: like used to working with him remotely. But then I
- 34:34Speaker 1: talked to my husband Shane and I talked to my
- 34:36Speaker 1: chiroprector John too while I was there a lot, so
- 34:39Speaker 1: I was constantly in touch with people, just like keeping
- 34:43Speaker 1: tabs on things. But then I did have help from
- 34:45Speaker 1: people in Tokyo that I wasn't expecting, like my last
- 34:49Speaker 1: like workout, which was like all my workouts were like
- 34:52Speaker 1: baby workouts. They were like two or three rops of
- 34:53Speaker 1: a workout, but my last workout in Tokyo, like Joe
- 34:56Speaker 1: Bossard was there for it, which was really nice. He's
- 34:58Speaker 1: like here, I'll like time you and he even took
- 35:00Speaker 1: some videos, which was nice so I could send them
- 35:03Speaker 1: to like to my chiropractice so he could look at them.
- 35:06Speaker 1: And then like on race day, like I remember like
- 35:10Speaker 1: Chalaine actually and like daythan both like helped me out
- 35:13Speaker 1: with things like my like ice best randomly went missing.
- 35:16Speaker 1: I like I can find it from the cooler, and
- 35:19Speaker 1: like I didn't have anyone there because we'd try to
- 35:23Speaker 1: see if my husband could go, but it was very
- 35:26Speaker 1: strict with all the COVID, which like is understandable, but
- 35:31Speaker 1: I didn't have anyone there, but like a lot of
- 35:33Speaker 1: people like it was kind of nice, like like helped
- 35:35Speaker 1: me out and like you said like I didn't, like
- 35:39Speaker 1: maybe a few years ago, I would have felt bad
- 35:41Speaker 1: asking for help, but I was just really thankful and
- 35:44Speaker 1: I sent like just somethinky messages afterwards to people like Hey,
- 35:47Speaker 1: thanks for that. I appreciated it.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Yeah, So yeah, I think, I mean, I think also
- 35:51Speaker 2: like this is another example of having to like reframe
- 35:53Speaker 2: your perspective and accept like how things are now right,
- 35:56Speaker 2: because it could have been like really easy in that moment,
- 35:59Speaker 2: like be frustrated, like why isn't anyone here with me?
- 36:02Speaker 2: Like why am I the one that's like navigating this
- 36:04Speaker 2: alone and like other people have like somehow managed to
- 36:07Speaker 2: have a coach here or whatever. But instead to pivot
- 36:09Speaker 2: and like just accept this and you're like, well, this
- 36:11Speaker 2: is how it is.
- 36:11Speaker 1: Now, Yeah it is. And I'm also like I am
- 36:14Speaker 1: used to having to travel to some races alone anyway,
- 36:17Speaker 1: and ideally, like it would be nice if I always
- 36:20Speaker 1: had like a support team there or sport person there.
- 36:23Speaker 1: My husband actually is he's planning on traveling to more
- 36:26Speaker 1: of my races and now he's taking a little bit
- 36:28Speaker 1: of a step back from work to help me with that.
- 36:31Speaker 1: But but I am kind of used to it at
- 36:33Speaker 1: the same time, and I know, like I'm people of
- 36:36Speaker 1: doing a lot on my own, and I know also
- 36:37Speaker 1: when I need to lean on people for help.
- 36:39Speaker 2: So I feel like a lot of individuals struggle with
- 36:41Speaker 2: that though, right, like getting good at doing things on
- 36:44Speaker 2: their own.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I kind of just didn't know any
- 36:47Speaker 1: different when I like kind of graduate from college. I
- 36:50Speaker 1: was kind of doing a lot on my own for
- 36:52Speaker 1: the first couple of years, Like I overlapped with Molly
- 36:54Speaker 1: a little bit here and there, but I was pretty
- 36:57Speaker 1: I was pretty much on my own for a lot
- 36:58Speaker 1: of it. And then when Shane started helping me with
- 37:02Speaker 1: workouts and like travel and stuff, I was like, wholl
- 37:05Speaker 1: this makes a huge difference. I can never not have
- 37:09Speaker 1: you or someone doing work. Yeah, Like it does make
- 37:13Speaker 1: a difference having a support team. But I think because
- 37:15Speaker 1: I didn't really know any different at first, Like I like,
- 37:18Speaker 1: I'm less flustered when I am somewhere I'm stuck somewhere
- 37:21Speaker 1: on my own, I kind of I know what to do.
- 37:25Speaker 2: When you look at the last I would say, like
- 37:28Speaker 2: four or five months kind of in the thick of
- 37:31Speaker 2: what you've been going through, anyone, has anyone given you
- 37:35Speaker 2: any advice that you keep coming back to.
- 37:37Speaker 1: But I do feel like over the years, I've just
- 37:39Speaker 1: collected a lot of advice, yeah, dealing with injuries just
- 37:42Speaker 1: in general, and I do feel like this one I've
- 37:44Speaker 1: had the healthiest approach with in that I'm like less
- 37:48Speaker 1: stressed about it. And maybe it's easier because I had,
- 37:51Speaker 1: like I am really happy with the year I had,
- 37:53Speaker 1: and you know, I'm thankful for everything my body was
- 37:56Speaker 1: able to do for me in twenty twenty one, So
- 37:59Speaker 1: maybe it was a little easy to like step back
- 38:02Speaker 1: and be like, all right, this shouldn't be completely shocking
- 38:04Speaker 1: that after a year training at like a high level,
- 38:06Speaker 1: my body needs a bit of rest. But yeah, I
- 38:09Speaker 1: think I don't know, just like constantly reminding myself like
- 38:13Speaker 1: this is temporary, yeah, and then just I'm viewing it
- 38:17Speaker 1: like how I kind of like picture it in my
- 38:19Speaker 1: mind right now. I'm like I'm just recharging, like I
- 38:22Speaker 1: am just like right now getting ready to go, Like
- 38:24Speaker 1: I'm enjoying this downtime with my family, like spending time
- 38:27Speaker 1: with my husband, and I'm trying to make the most
- 38:30Speaker 1: of it. I'm very intentional with my time and when
- 38:33Speaker 1: I'm like getting treatment or when i'm doing my strength routines,
- 38:36Speaker 1: Like I'm paying attention and I'm listening and trying to
- 38:39Speaker 1: make sure I'm kind of getting things down right. But yeah,
- 38:43Speaker 1: I'm just like I'm just like getting stronger. I'm just
- 38:45Speaker 1: biding my time and I'm trying to learn too, and
- 38:48Speaker 1: then when it's time to go, I'm just gonna I'm
- 38:50Speaker 1: gonna be so excited.
- 38:51Speaker 2: I think, like one of the best things that you
- 38:54Speaker 2: hear from individuals who have overcome injury often they say
- 38:57Speaker 2: that they utilize that time to work on something else
- 39:01Speaker 2: that they hadn't been giving that focus while they were
- 39:04Speaker 2: quote unquote in their best form. So like right now,
- 39:07Speaker 2: for you, maybe strength training in a way that you
- 39:09Speaker 2: hadn't been over the last like handful of months, or
- 39:13Speaker 2: taking the time to like again like spend time with
- 39:16Speaker 2: family or whatnot. It's like all of these we have.
- 39:18Speaker 2: We have so many buckets in our life, and like
- 39:20Speaker 2: oftentimes it's easy to like keep pouring into like bucket
- 39:23Speaker 2: A and bucket B, but then you forget to pour
- 39:25Speaker 2: into CD and exactly when you're injured, it's like, oh, shoot,
- 39:28Speaker 2: now I like actually can put some stuff in CD
- 39:30Speaker 2: and E and realize maybe going forward that you can
- 39:33Speaker 2: do some more of that more often, even if you're
- 39:35Speaker 2: given giving to the first two buckets.
- 39:37Speaker 1: I didn't put that better, that's so true. But to
- 39:39Speaker 1: all of that, yeah, I think for me, the hardest
- 39:42Speaker 1: part with my job, I think is like missing out
- 39:44Speaker 1: on like family events, like missing out on weddings and holidays.
- 39:49Speaker 1: And I was able to go to my cousin's wedding
- 39:50Speaker 1: in Chicago a couple of weeks ago, and if I
- 39:52Speaker 1: was doing New York, like I probably wouldn't have gone.
- 39:55Speaker 1: And I was like, wow, like I need to make
- 39:57Speaker 1: more time for this because like I miss seeing like
- 40:01Speaker 1: my aunts and my uncles and my grandfather and my cousins,
- 40:05Speaker 1: Like I need to make time for this in my
- 40:07Speaker 1: life too. So I think that was kind of a
- 40:09Speaker 1: good reminder to like take advantage of like my breaks
- 40:13Speaker 1: and my downtime and really focus on those relationships. And
- 40:16Speaker 1: then yeah, like focusing on strength training and how like
- 40:20Speaker 1: I'm going to have been incorporating that into my routine,
- 40:22Speaker 1: but still like you can always learn, you can always
- 40:25Speaker 1: get like like you can always learn, you can always
- 40:28Speaker 1: get better, and so really focusing on what broke down,
- 40:32Speaker 1: what needs some work, and what I can improve upon
- 40:35Speaker 1: so hopefully, Like, I don't think I'll be like bulletproof,
- 40:38Speaker 1: but maybe the next time I have an injury it'll
- 40:39Speaker 1: be a little less severe.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're already mentally approaching them better and better
- 40:43Speaker 2: every time. It happens with experience, And that's like such
- 40:46Speaker 2: such a big deal. Any must do things while you're
- 40:49Speaker 2: in New York. Besides, you know, just the events, any places, a.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Lot of events. I'm actually meeting up with some of
- 40:54Speaker 1: my friends from college tomorrow, which is kind of nice,
- 40:58Speaker 1: have dinner with a couple of them, and then yeah,
- 41:00Speaker 1: just like getting to catch up with people and getting
- 41:03Speaker 1: to see everything, what's going on marathon weekend, getting to
- 41:06Speaker 1: see that magic happen again.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Well, I'm grateful that one of your stops on your
- 41:11Speaker 2: New York tour was the Hurdle Studio.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Yes, thank you for having me, Emily.
- 41:15Speaker 2: How do the hurdlers keep up with you? How do
- 41:16Speaker 2: they follow along with you? Give me the details.
- 41:18Speaker 1: I mostly post on Instagram. It's m Underscore assistant. Underscore
- 41:23Speaker 1: occasionally tweet like twice a year. That's the rare tweet
- 41:27Speaker 1: you actually can tell you my Twitter handle, Oh wow,
- 41:30Speaker 1: it's oh jeez, it's probably am Underscore system or M System.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Well, it'll be in the show notes, don't you worry.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Yeah, And that's about it.
- 41:37Speaker 2: That's it. I'm over at Emily a Body and at
- 41:40Speaker 2: Hurdle Podcast. Another Hurdle conquered. Gotch you guys, Next time.
