- 0:00Speaker 1: You have a new movie. Your movie's coming out. Yeah,
- 0:02Speaker 1: No Trains. May 29th. May 29th, yes. Breadwinner. Breadwinner. In theaters.
- 0:08Speaker 1: In theaters. And you have a Nate rate? What is this? Yeah,
- 0:12Speaker 1: we talked to all the movie theaters and got prices lowered.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Nice.
- 0:19Speaker 1: So, yeah, yeah, because we want the whole family to
- 0:21Speaker 1: come out. It's interesting with movies, man. You start looking at, like, theaters. Like,
- 0:26Speaker 1: you know, you guys make them in distribution and all
- 0:29Speaker 1: this stuff. Like, you know, think about touring. Like, it's
- 0:32Speaker 1: hard not to think about movies and touring as kind
- 0:34Speaker 1: of like the same kind of thing. You know, you
- 0:37Speaker 1: get a promoter, you get this, you go to every town. Like,
- 0:40Speaker 1: if you make a movie and you go to these
- 0:41Speaker 1: theaters and they're in every single town and you kind
- 0:44Speaker 1: of go... Like, did you hear about that kid on YouTube?
- 0:47Speaker 1: He did a horror movie. And he's got a bunch
- 0:50Speaker 1: of subscribers on YouTube. And he's a big horror fan,
- 0:54Speaker 1: I think. And they made a movie. He made a movie.
- 0:57Speaker 2: And I mean.
- 0:58Speaker 1: It was, you know, it was going to go out
- 1:00Speaker 1: to a few theaters. Then his fans just started calling
- 1:03Speaker 1: their theaters being like, no, we want it to come.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And it was like a huge success. And he made
- 1:08Speaker 1: it for, I want to say three million. And then, yeah.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Let me see. Iron, is it? Yeah, it's like. Something iron. No.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Iron something. It was iron something. And then Iron Lung, yeah.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Was that it? Yeah. Grossed over $ 50 million. I think
- 1:24Speaker 1: he made it for three. Wow. But it was like,
- 1:27Speaker 1: that's a guy that just basically did it like a tour,
- 1:31Speaker 1: like how we would tour and sell tickets. Markiplier. Mm-hmm.
- 1:34Speaker 3: That was in guys named Markiplier. And what does it say?
- 1:36Speaker 3: Can you take me into what happened with the movie?
- 1:39Speaker 1: He just made it. He said he wanted to make it.
- 1:42Speaker 3: The Iron Long movie was independently self-financed and created by
- 1:45Speaker 3: YouTuber Mark Fischbach. Markiplier, who wrote, directed, produced, edited, and
- 1:49Speaker 3: started and operating without a major studio. He shot the
- 1:52Speaker 3: film over 35 days using a life-size 9,000-pound submarine set
- 1:55Speaker 3: mounted on a.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Hydraulic motion rig. Wow.
- 1:58Speaker 3: After struggling to find traditional Hollywood distribution, he self-distributed the film.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Massive fan campaigns convinced major theater chains to screen it.
- 2:07Speaker 3: The indie film became a massive box office hit, grossing
- 2:09Speaker 3: $ 50 million on a $ 4 budget.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Wow. So he had his fans all call... Once he
- 2:14Speaker 1: said he wanted to go out, he was in a
- 2:16Speaker 1: few theaters and his fans kept calling their theaters and
- 2:19Speaker 1: their towns. And they said they want to see it.
- 2:21Speaker 1: And then he went out and did it. $ 4 million budget.
- 2:24Speaker 1: That's amazing. That's incredible, dude. But that's where you see
- 2:27Speaker 1: movies where you're like, that guy did it kind of
- 2:30Speaker 1: like how you would tour on a comedy club. Like
- 2:33Speaker 1: you're going and selling tickets just in these towns. Right.
- 2:37Speaker 1: And so if you got a big following like that,
- 2:39Speaker 1: that tours and you go make a movie, I mean,
- 2:43Speaker 1: You know, it's like, can he go do that? You know,
- 2:45Speaker 1: I understand that one time is kind of like, oh, yeah,
- 2:49Speaker 1: it's crazy. So it would be magic. Can he go
- 2:51Speaker 1: do it again or can he repeat it? Yeah, it's interesting.
- 2:55Speaker 3: I mean, even with our own movie, I don't know
- 2:56Speaker 3: what we sold compared to, like, if I were touring
- 2:59Speaker 3: in a place as opposed to people that came out
- 3:01Speaker 3: to go to the theaters.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I don't think it was close, but I do know
- 3:07Speaker 3: that I had a lot of friends who were like, dude,
- 3:10Speaker 3: I haven't been to the movie theater in eight years,
- 3:12Speaker 3: 10 years, right? I had a lot of people who
- 3:16Speaker 3: went to the movie theaters by themselves. We had one
- 3:19Speaker 3: video of a dude, he went to the movie theater,
- 3:22Speaker 3: nobody else was in the theater, right? he ends up watching,
- 3:27Speaker 3: what was this dude's name? I got to find it.
- 3:29Speaker 3: We'll put it in. He ends up just taking his
- 3:31Speaker 3: shirt off and sitting there and watching the movie by himself, relaxing.
- 3:33Speaker 3: He's the only guy in there. Watched the whole thing
- 3:36Speaker 3: by himself. This dude, I think it's like, it was
- 3:39Speaker 3: this guy, it's like this Latino guy. He's at work
- 3:41Speaker 3: and he's like, bro, I'm freaking tired, but I want
- 3:44Speaker 3: to go see this movie maybe. I don't know. And
- 3:47Speaker 3: then you see him walk in. He's like, nobody's even here.
- 3:49Speaker 3: And then like 10 minutes later, he's like, I guess
- 3:51Speaker 3: I'll just enjoy myself. Yeah. I don't know what happened
- 3:54Speaker 3: after that. I mean, he just, we know he had
- 3:57Speaker 3: the shirt off and watched it. Oh, yeah, this is
- 4:01Speaker 3: him right here, dude.
- 4:01Speaker 1: This is the guy. Can you pull it up? Man,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I just got off of work.
- 4:06Speaker 3: I got this f * * * ing movie I'm.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Trying to go watch. F * * *, dude. I
- 4:14Speaker 1: don't feel like doing shit, to be honest. Look, I
- 4:17Speaker 1: still made it in this f * * * er,
- 4:19Speaker 1: but look, check it out. Ain't nobody in this bitch, bro.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And he had to set the phone.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Up somewhere and do this.
- 4:27Speaker 1: That's kind of a vibe.
- 4:28Speaker 3: That's him right there.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Golden cheeseburger right there. Golden underscore cheeseburger. Shout out to him.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Being a horror worker, went to catch a movie. I
- 4:46Speaker 1: never even thought about wanting to take your shirt off.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I think people either don't or do want to take
- 4:50Speaker 1: their shirt off. Yeah. I'm a not. I don't want
- 4:53Speaker 1: to take my shirt off. But, I mean, if someone
- 4:55Speaker 1: wants to, buddy, they want to. Oh, we know a guy. Yeah.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Yeah, we do. We know a guy. Yeah, sometimes I
- 5:02Speaker 3: wish we'd have tried to go in more theaters, but.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Going to. But, yeah, taking your shirt off. Yeah. But
- 5:07Speaker 1: going what? Going to theater alone, man, that, like, it's
- 5:10Speaker 1: pretty great. That's something you do a lot as a
- 5:12Speaker 1: comic on the road. You can hit some, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 1: you go to some movie at noon. Yeah. And you're
- 5:18Speaker 1: just by yourself in there. Oh, yeah. Have you ever
- 5:20Speaker 1: had someone come sit right next to you? I've been
- 5:24Speaker 1: by myself or, like, maybe one other comic. Yeah. And
- 5:27Speaker 1: then two more people walk in, they sit in the
- 5:28Speaker 1: seats in front of us. Oh. Drives me nuts. And
- 5:31Speaker 1: what do you do? I'll move. Yeah. Or I'll sit
- 5:35Speaker 1: there and just be angry during the whole movie. Yeah.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Because why would you do that? Oh, dude, yeah. Why
- 5:41Speaker 1: would you sit right, you know? Just go sit. It's empty.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Just go sit somewhere else up. But here's the thing, though.
- 5:51Speaker 3: If you sit too far away from that person, do
- 5:53Speaker 3: you think they feel kind of left.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Out or something? No, I would go as far away
- 5:58Speaker 1: from them. I'm one that doesn't want to really be
- 6:02Speaker 1: near someone.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Of course, near someone in a dark theater that you
- 6:05Speaker 3: don't know.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Yeah. I think you've got to have space. I mean,
- 6:09Speaker 1: I would sit. Like when you go with a buddy,
- 6:11Speaker 1: we don't sit next to each other. You have that
- 6:12Speaker 1: empty seat. Thank you. Yeah.
- 6:14Speaker 3: When we went to Kevin James' movie, you and I
- 6:16Speaker 3: sat next to each other and we kept a seat
- 6:17Speaker 3: between us. Yes, we kept a seat between us. Like
- 6:20Speaker 3: civilized people.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. We were normal. Yeah. And we
- 6:25Speaker 1: enjoyed the movie more. Oh, yeah. It was good, dude. Yeah.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Like Beetlejuice. You ever see that guy, Beetlejuice? Mm-hmm. From Stern?
- 6:34Speaker 1: We called him up. We offered him money to come
- 6:35Speaker 1: on this podcast one time. And he said no? This
- 6:38Speaker 1: is what he said. This is the craziest part.
- 6:39Speaker 3: He's like, where are you going to leave the money at?
- 6:44Speaker 3: And I couldn't, like, any. And just from there, it
- 6:48Speaker 3: was like.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Oh, it was downhill. Yeah.
- 6:51Speaker 3: It was so hard. He's like, yeah, where are you
- 6:52Speaker 3: going to put the money at? Yeah.
- 6:54Speaker 1: And I was like, oh. And I couldn't explain to him, like,
- 6:57Speaker 1: at the bank or whatever. Yeah. We're going to send
- 6:59Speaker 1: you a check. Yeah. Unreal. Yeah, wire, anything.
- 7:03Speaker 3: No, but I love that you're doing this, dude. I
- 7:05Speaker 3: love that you were able to make that happen. How
- 7:07Speaker 3: did you make that happen with the theater's? And then also, secondarily,
- 7:12Speaker 3: do you know how many theaters you guys are opening
- 7:14Speaker 3: up in?
- 7:17Speaker 1: I think 3,000. Oh, wow. Really? Yeah. I think so.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I'm not positive. I think it's like that. I think
- 7:22Speaker 1: it's 3,000. But it's, you know, it's, dude, it's like meeting,
- 7:29Speaker 1: you know, we've met like, you know, AMC, that, Head
- 7:33Speaker 1: of Regal, Cinemark, Cineplex. Like, you just kind of go
- 7:36Speaker 1: to them and like, they're all, they're in the same business.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I always say this. I'm in the ticket selling business.
- 7:41Speaker 1: You're in the ticket selling business. We sell tickets. So
- 7:45Speaker 1: you kind of take stuff out of the hands of Hollywood,
- 7:51Speaker 1: in a sense, once you're in this ticket selling business.
- 7:55Speaker 1: That's my relationship with the audience is you buy a
- 7:58Speaker 1: ticket and you come see me. And so when you
- 8:01Speaker 1: can kind of do that, I think you can go
- 8:02Speaker 1: to these theaters to go, we're all on the same page.
- 8:05Speaker 1: They want people coming to theaters. I want them to
- 8:08Speaker 1: come see the movie I made. And so then you're,
- 8:11Speaker 1: I think you can just, there's ways around it. And
- 8:13Speaker 1: now we're in such a new world where you're, you know,
- 8:17Speaker 1: you start meeting people and like everybody just wants their
- 8:20Speaker 1: businesses to grow. And I think everybody took it for
- 8:23Speaker 1: granted for such a long time because it was, that's
- 8:26Speaker 1: just what it was. What do you mean? Like growing
- 8:29Speaker 1: up was, you know, growing up you just went to
- 8:32Speaker 1: the movie theaters. You couldn't do, there was no streaming.
- 8:34Speaker 1: There was a, you know, then once all the streaming
- 8:36Speaker 1: stuff started happening. It's like, then they kind of went
- 8:38Speaker 1: hard into that. And then I think left theaters. And
- 8:42Speaker 1: now you're getting back to where these younger generations that
- 8:45Speaker 1: are growing up with phones and they're seeing their parents
- 8:48Speaker 1: on the phone all the time and they just want
- 8:52Speaker 1: to go somewhere and they want to go do stuff.
- 8:55Speaker 1: And so then it's like, there's a chance I think
- 8:57Speaker 1: it will flip back to, you know, I mean, you know,
- 9:01Speaker 1: when you feel like, I think every time I drop
- 9:03Speaker 1: my phone, I think I hope it breaks. Oh yeah.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I always just, someone's like, oh, I'm like, it'd be
- 9:08Speaker 1: wonderful if it broke.
- 9:10Speaker 3: I hope someone steals it. I'll even go to a
- 9:12Speaker 3: city that has a lot of crime and drop my
- 9:14Speaker 3: phone there a couple, 10, 12 times.
- 9:15Speaker 1: See what happens.
- 9:17Speaker 3: And I'll even make that sound like, oh.
- 9:19Speaker 1: And be let down. Yes. I thought this city had
- 9:23Speaker 1: crime and I was wrong.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:27Speaker 3: I'll even do that when I drop it point at
- 9:29Speaker 3: it yeah but yeah dude leave it way out of
- 9:32Speaker 3: your pocket back pocket oh when my phone goes off
- 9:35Speaker 3: dude sometimes I used to wet the bed and I
- 9:37Speaker 3: would be like an adult which was the saddest part
- 9:40Speaker 3: of it but after that there was times where I
- 9:44Speaker 3: was like supposed to like get up in the morning
- 9:46Speaker 3: or whatever and then I would urinate all over my
- 9:48Speaker 3: phone it would short out and it would be like
- 9:51Speaker 3: the best morning.
- 9:52Speaker 1: But yeah especially after something so sad happening As an adult. Oh, yeah.
- 9:59Speaker 1: You get past that. But then your phone doesn't work
- 10:02Speaker 1: and you're like, man, what a day. Yeah. I leave
- 10:05Speaker 1: my phone like on the road. But I'll have like an,
- 10:08Speaker 1: you know, you have an Apple Watch. You have an
- 10:11Speaker 1: Apple Watch? Like you have an Apple Watch, you can
- 10:13Speaker 1: have Apple Watch with cellular. Yes. So you can leave
- 10:16Speaker 1: your phone. And then like, you know, it's like one
- 10:18Speaker 1: of those like, all right, if someone needed to call me,
- 10:21Speaker 1: it's like you could throw AirPods in or you can
- 10:23Speaker 1: be like, hey, I got to call you back or
- 10:24Speaker 1: text message or whatever. That's a big thing you do
- 10:28Speaker 1: with kids at first. Sometimes you give them an Apple
- 10:30Speaker 1: Watch before a phone. Because they can't do too much
- 10:32Speaker 1: with an Apple Watch, but you could get a hold
- 10:34Speaker 1: of them. My kid, yeah.
- 10:36Speaker 3: My kid would be lucky to get an Apple and
- 10:40Speaker 3: watch what happens if you don't behave. That's how I'm starting.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Yeah. That's a start. Yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Is a good diet and then like light threat.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:48Speaker 3: And then we'll go from there to see what else
- 10:50Speaker 3: they get if they are well behaved. But Oliver Anthony
- 10:55Speaker 3: just did something. Can you bring that up? What he
- 10:56Speaker 3: was trying to do with ticketing? And congrats, man, on
- 10:59Speaker 3: your movie. Yeah, ours just, we only got 500 theaters.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I wish we'd have gone bigger and I wish we'd
- 11:06Speaker 3: have gone to more rural theaters. I think we tried
- 11:08Speaker 3: to do like too much just city stuff.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But anyway. But I mean like movies are,
- 11:14Speaker 1: go back before too, like streaming is, I kind of
- 11:19Speaker 1: think of streaming sometimes as like, it's like blockbuster in
- 11:22Speaker 1: a sense. It's like where your stuff can go live
- 11:24Speaker 1: and people can go watch that forever. I mean, Bert's movie,
- 11:28Speaker 1: you know, it's like he went, to theaters, and then
- 11:30Speaker 1: he went crazy and destroyed it on Netflix.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Well, I think, and also, man, sorry to, I kind
- 11:38Speaker 3: of made that about me there in our movie for
- 11:39Speaker 3: a second.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I want to apologize about that. No, I'll talk about
- 11:42Speaker 1: your movie.
- 11:42Speaker 3: No, congratulations. So it's going to be opening May 29th.
- 11:45Speaker 3: That's this Friday.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Yeah. And it's in theaters. It's going to be in 3,000 theaters,
- 11:48Speaker 1: which means almost everywhere. Yeah. That's a lot of places. Yeah,
- 11:52Speaker 1: that's wonderful, dude. It's exciting. Also, just, there's a chance
- 11:56Speaker 1: it's four theaters. If for some reason it's not $ 3, 000.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I think it's $ 3, 000, but it would be funny. Because
- 12:02Speaker 1: the change is $ 4, 000, you mean? No, I think $ 4, 000
- 12:04Speaker 1: is the max. I think we're at $ 3, 000. I'm just saying,
- 12:07Speaker 1: we go back and, you know, it's in 100 theaters.
- 12:11Speaker 1: It could be that, too. Got it.
- 12:14Speaker 3: What was Oliver saying? Yeah, I just saw this the
- 12:15Speaker 3: other day. Can you just play a little bit of it?
- 12:17Speaker 2: I could really use your suggestions and your advice. I
- 12:20Speaker 2: am looking for venues to play. Um, you know, I've
- 12:23Speaker 2: started booking my own shows again. So in April we
- 12:26Speaker 2: did those Virginias, um, where I just rented the room
- 12:28Speaker 2: outright and I sold my own tickets through this West
- 12:31Speaker 2: Virginia ticket company. And it was sweet. It was like
- 12:33Speaker 2: a bypass the whole system. Um, and it actually worked
- 12:36Speaker 2: and it went over pretty well. And so I just
- 12:39Speaker 2: announced again for the June 1st through the third, I'm
- 12:42Speaker 2: doing Charlotte, Greenville and Raleigh the exact same way, but
- 12:46Speaker 2: I'm just going on Google and trying to find venues.
- 12:48Speaker 2: And so I have no idea what's good and bad.
- 12:50Speaker 2: But if you have places that you like going to
- 12:52Speaker 2: see music that can hold.
- 12:53Speaker 1: At least, I don't know.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Okay, got it. So he was trying, I guess, some ticketing.
- 12:56Speaker 3: I guess ticketing maybe through the exact venues. I think
- 12:59Speaker 3: because that's a big.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Thing for people.
- 13:01Speaker 3: And Oliver has always been like a pioneer of like
- 13:03Speaker 3: trying to figure out, you know, how do you get
- 13:06Speaker 3: take away from, you know, some of these big groups
- 13:08Speaker 3: like Ticketmaster and Live Nation. It's just that have these conglomerates,
- 13:11Speaker 3: you know.
- 13:11Speaker 1: It's a lot. I mean, those Ticketmaster fees are crazy.
- 13:15Speaker 1: They're crazy. Here's the like, you know. They're crazy. No, no,
- 13:19Speaker 1: they're insane. I agree. But here's the thing with like
- 13:24Speaker 1: how much work that was for him to do four
- 13:28Speaker 1: or five shows. Right. That's a lot of work. So
- 13:30Speaker 1: it's like you got to get for him to if
- 13:34Speaker 1: he wants to go if you want to go do
- 13:35Speaker 1: it this way, you're going to need to build a system. Right.
- 13:38Speaker 1: And so you're going to have to have people. that
- 13:40Speaker 1: are going to be able to help you to go
- 13:41Speaker 1: do that. You can go do that, but you have
- 13:43Speaker 1: to build a system. Or otherwise, you're not going to
- 13:45Speaker 1: be able to tour like the way you want to.
- 13:49Speaker 1: If everybody wants to go see him, he's wonderful and
- 13:52Speaker 1: all this, and it's a lot of work. Remember, Louis
- 13:58Speaker 1: might still do it. Louis did it for a while.
- 14:00Speaker 1: He did it a long time where you buy tickets
- 14:02Speaker 1: through his website and stuff like that. There's many ways
- 14:06Speaker 1: that you can go try to do it. And look,
- 14:09Speaker 1: a hard part of this too is that some people
- 14:13Speaker 1: are like, I'll just, just let me go to Ticketmaster, dude.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I don't. You know, it's our StubHub or whatever they're
- 14:19Speaker 1: going to go do. And you're fighting that too. So
- 14:23Speaker 1: it's not like we all want to. I always thought
- 14:26Speaker 1: of it like this. You're right. I never thought about
- 14:27Speaker 1: that part of it. Some people are okay with it.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Sometimes you're like, dude, what do you want? Like if
- 14:32Speaker 1: I really look at it all, even though it's like
- 14:34Speaker 1: I believe in the thing that you're doing, it's just
- 14:40Speaker 1: so much work. And you got to get the word
- 14:43Speaker 1: out and people have to find you and see you
- 14:46Speaker 1: and all this. I don't know what he, where he
- 14:49Speaker 1: wants to be career wise. Like, like, you know, does
- 14:52Speaker 1: he want to be the most biggest star in the world?
- 14:54Speaker 1: I don't feel like he, I feel like he loves
- 14:55Speaker 1: where he's at. And like, I think he just loves
- 14:58Speaker 1: having that relationship with the people, with the audience, with
- 15:00Speaker 1: the people, which is, which is amazing. Uh, and so
- 15:04Speaker 1: it's like, you should do that. But then there's a mix.
- 15:05Speaker 1: You're the thing, you know, it's, you remember doing like
- 15:08Speaker 1: comedy clubs and you'd go try to do a rock.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Like for me, I would go try to do a
- 15:12Speaker 1: rock venue, uh, instead of a comedy club. And then
- 15:15Speaker 1: you go to the odd, the people that would come
- 15:16Speaker 1: out to me, they don't know where this rock venue
- 15:18Speaker 1: is at. So they've never heard of this rock venue.
- 15:21Speaker 1: They just know where the comedy club is. Right. Now
- 15:22Speaker 1: you're doing it. Now you're a hundred people show up
- 15:26Speaker 1: under a bench somewhere. Yeah. Okay. Yeah.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Oh, you just got word it's 3,300 theaters there.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so. They charge all this stuff. Ticketmaster
- 15:37Speaker 1: does all this stuff. It's one of those. It's a mafia. Yeah,
- 15:44Speaker 1: but the audience, yes, it's frustrating. We're all frustrated by it.
- 15:50Speaker 1: But then it's also like people are busy. How many
- 15:55Speaker 1: people can you get that are going to go follow
- 15:56Speaker 1: you everywhere? I agree.
