- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean.
- 0:13Here it is Thursday, it is the 15th of August and it is great
- 0:19to have your company. Thanks for tapping on play as we
- 0:22celebrate today. Because today, today, 85 years
- 0:26ago, this little flash in the pan film that really wouldn't
- 0:30last very long was released called The Wizard of Oz.
- 0:34There you go. Hey, didn't that cause a stir?
- 0:37And still today I find myself singing, at least on a weekly
- 0:40basis that I'm off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of
- 0:43Oz Why? Well, because, because, because,
- 0:46because, because of the wonderful things he does and so
- 0:49on. Amazing. 85 years ago today,
- 0:51that is certainly a story that has stood the test of time.
- 0:57But Speaking of standing the test of time, that might be 85
- 1:00years. The friends, we are going to
- 1:02read a story which spans thousands of years.
- 1:07And today we read the next chapter of that story as
- 1:11captured by this incredible apostle by the name of Paul as
- 1:14he writes to his friends in Corinth.
- 1:17And we are going to read it together as we hear what it is
- 1:19that the Holy Spirit has convicted Paul to write to his
- 1:23friends about to make sure that they are setting up their church
- 1:26community to follow in the way of God's Kingdom.
- 1:30So let us read that together, shall we?
- 1:32Let us read together First Corinthians chapter 8.
- 1:46Now regarding your question about food that has been offered
- 1:49to idols, yes, we know that we all have knowledge about this
- 1:54issue. But while knowledge makes us
- 1:56feel important, it is love that strengthens the church.
- 2:01Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn't really know
- 2:04very much. But the person who loves God is
- 2:08the one whom God recognises. So what about eating meat that
- 2:13has been offered to idols? Well, we all know that an idol
- 2:17is not really a God and that there is only one God.
- 2:21There may be so called gods both in heaven and on earth, and some
- 2:25people actually worship many gods and many Lords.
- 2:29But for us there is one God the Father, by whom all things were
- 2:35created and for whom we live. And there is one Lord Jesus
- 2:41Christ, through whom all things were created and through whom we
- 2:46live. However, not all believers know
- 2:50this. Some are accustomed to thinking
- 2:52of idols as being real. So when they eat food that has
- 2:56been offered to idols, they think of it as the worship of
- 2:59real gods, and their weak consciences are violated.
- 3:04It's true that we can't win God's approval by what we eat.
- 3:08We don't lose anything if we don't eat it, and we don't gain
- 3:12anything if we do. But you must be careful so that
- 3:16your freedom does not 'cause others with a weaker conscience
- 3:20to stumble. For if others see you with your
- 3:24superior knowledge, eating in the temple of an idol, won't
- 3:29they be encouraged to violate their conscience by eating food
- 3:33that has been offered to an idol?
- 3:35So because of your superior knowledge, a weak believer for
- 3:40whom Christ died will be destroyed.
- 3:44And when you sin against another believer by encouraging them to
- 3:47do something they believe is wrong, you are sinning against
- 3:51Christ. So if what I eat causes another
- 3:55believer to sin, I will never eat meat again as long as I
- 3:59live, for I don't want to cause another believer to stumble.
- 4:14Ah, Jesus, you know that we live in a world that is so
- 4:17individual, that is all about my desires, my wants, my needs
- 4:22being gratified. But here Paul writes about a
- 4:27better way, a way that is always cognizant of the needs and the
- 4:33desires of those around us. That even as we live in the
- 4:37freedom that you have won for us, Jesus, that we can always be
- 4:41mindful of how we live and how we act.
- 4:45So that in everything we do, we are encouraging our brothers and
- 4:49sisters around us toward faith and fidelity to you.
- 4:56So convict us to always think communally and not individually
- 5:00as our world would tell us to, and that as we think communally,
- 5:05we might think of how we can continually point those around
- 5:10us to you and the love and the freedom that you have for them.
- 5:15Thank you Jesus, for this love and this freedom that you offer
- 5:18us so graciously and so generously.
- 5:22We are in awe of you and we love you and we pray all of this in
- 5:26your saving name. I'm in.
