- 0:57Awesome Okay guys. So autism money right?
- 1:00Now. Here's the thing, there are a
- 1:01lot of people on the autism spectrum who have difficulties
- 1:04managing, maintaining money, finance and all that kind of
- 1:07stuff. I myself have had crazy issues
- 1:11with trying to. I myself have had crazy amount
- 1:14of issues of trying to like organize money and finance and
- 1:16stuff and I actually can't do it.
- 1:18So I have my partner, Naomi. She actually helps me manage all
- 1:21the money and stuff because it's really difficult to keep on
- 1:24track of like what's going in, what's going out, how do you pay
- 1:26for things like it's and there's not a bunch of things that go
- 1:29with it, right? So I've listed out five of the
- 1:31main points that kind of like we go over here and where they
- 1:34where the issues may lie. And now the idea for this is
- 1:36that if you can identify where the issues are, then you may be
- 1:39able to ask for help in those areas.
- 1:41So I'm going to go through the points, hopefully.
- 1:43Hopefully you resonate with those points and then you can
- 1:45take them to whoever kind of like helps you out in your life.
- 1:49And then you can ask them for help and it should be pretty
- 1:52awesome. OK.
- 1:53So the first one we're talking about here is bad organizing.
- 1:56Now autistic people may find it hard or may find it like chaos,
- 2:02dealing with loads of like insurance and outs of money, you
- 2:05know, daily bills and all these kind of like, you know, there's
- 2:08a, there's a current flow of transfer of money coming in and
- 2:11money coming out in livelihood, right?
- 2:12And this can be a huge issue, right?
- 2:15This could be a big cause because it's not, it's not an
- 2:19easy thing. You know when you're when you're
- 2:20having to deal with something when it's just you dealing with
- 2:23it, it's easy to do because it's just you and you've got your
- 2:26things and you can control what happens there.
- 2:28But when you have things that are going outside and inside,
- 2:31you know money comes in, money goes out.
- 2:33It's kind of like exterior resources that are having like
- 2:36third party effect, which obviously causes a lot of stress
- 2:39and having money coming in, many coming out on a daily basis
- 2:42knowing how much to kind of use. And it can be very, very
- 2:46difficult. I'm just so glad I have somebody
- 2:47to help me with all of that because it can be a stress.
- 2:50So if parents are watching this right now, make sure you write
- 2:53down a list, get out of pen and paper and write down these
- 2:55things because these are the areas that you're going to be
- 2:57wanting to help educate your kid in.
- 3:00So yeah, that'd be super, super awesome.
- 3:03Okay. So #2 is Lack of consequence
- 3:05awareness. That sounds a bit of a bit of a
- 3:07mouthful, doesn't it? But what this means is, you
- 3:10know, autistic people may have, you know, the idea of
- 3:13consequence, break it down like this.
- 3:14So the idea of consequence from spending money may be difficult
- 3:17for people who are autistic because the idea of if you spend
- 3:21money, then you can get this. But if you spend money, you
- 3:24can't get this, you know, kind of like prioritizing money.
- 3:28And this could be a huge issue and could cause major problems
- 3:31like if you, you know, if they spend money on one thing or if
- 3:33like I spend money on something, then I've used that money up and
- 3:36then I don't have money for this.
- 3:37So the consequence of actually spending money to buy something
- 3:40has a knock on effect to my future purpose.
- 3:43And I feel like this is a huge one.
- 3:45This is what I always have issues with.
- 3:47So I just have to consult with Naomi before I buy anything
- 3:50because I buy like loads of books and stuff to kind of learn
- 3:52and train myself in my business. But in terms of everything else,
- 3:56kind of like, you know, the stuff at my desk right now I
- 3:57just bought, you know, like I bought two of these actually two
- 4:00of these mark safe charges. I'm just anyway, so no, we gets
- 4:04run by everything and she kind of approves it if we need it.
- 4:07So let's move on to #3. So #3 is short term memory
- 4:12issues. Now autistic people will have
- 4:14issues with short term memory like not remembering, you know,
- 4:17if somebody says, hey, can you meet me over there by 3:00 and
- 4:20they'll be like, yeah, OK cool. But then the autistic person
- 4:22will be like, oh completely forget about it and then it's
- 4:25just gone gone away, never going to meet them.
- 4:28If you just like there's no way I'm going to remember that,
- 4:30right? So having having shorts of
- 4:33memory issues with with money and bills and stuff could be not
- 4:37being able to remember how much money you have to spend on
- 4:39something versus like the actual price of the item.
- 4:42So maybe there's an item that costs X amount of money, but
- 4:45then you only have a certain amount of money, but you can't
- 4:47remember how much money you've got.
- 4:48So you try to buy the item and then it doesn't, the transaction
- 4:50is void because you you're not able to purchase that.
- 4:53Now this is a big issue as well. It's a big learning curve as
- 4:55well, learning to to recognize what value you have.
- 4:59This is the value of the thing that you need to purchase.
- 5:01It's a big learning curve and it's something we all have to do
- 5:04in life. But I feel like it's excessively
- 5:06difficult for people who shot some memory issues and this
- 5:08comes kind of like with an Austin Spectrum disorder Okay.
- 5:11So #4 is budgeting issues, right.
- 5:13So budgeting is a skill that anyone, including neurotypical
- 5:17people have issues with, right? Because budgeting is is creating
- 5:20a creating a way around sort and organizing your money.
- 5:25But however, like autistic people can have major issues
- 5:29trying to prioritize budgeting. Like knowing that you're having
- 5:33a prioritize list what what needs the most attention.
- 5:36When you have a budget and you have to distribute money between
- 5:38certain things, which thing takes priority and which thing
- 5:42can be left alone? Like you know say you have these
- 5:45bills for utilities and rent but then you also want to get candy
- 5:50you know and so you kind of think well sweets and candy like
- 5:55least on your on your priority list and the essentials that you
- 5:57need to live with should be on the on the on the forefront and
- 5:59the priority list. But that whole that concept is
- 6:03sometimes very difficult to grasp and to when you're in the
- 6:06swing of things, going through stuff to to sort out bills and
- 6:09manage but saying it's very difficult.
- 6:11I use budgeting apps and stuff like that and obviously, of
- 6:13course they only helps me. So that's how we keep on track
- 6:15of it. But it isn't always awkward.
- 6:16I, you know, it's it's difficult.
- 6:18It's difficult the best of times.
- 6:20Okay. So #5 is forward planning
- 6:22issues, right. So as you know, short term
- 6:24memory is something of an issue with autism.
- 6:27An autistic person may forget to pay a bill in the future or
- 6:30forget to say or forget to set up recurring payments for the
- 6:34future. So knowing that you have to pay
- 6:37for something in the future with short term memory loss comes a
- 6:39consequence. You'll be like, oh shoot, I
- 6:42forgot to go and pay that. And then by no fault of your
- 6:44own, because it's not your fault, obviously you have memory
- 6:46issues, you've forgotten to pay something and then this could be
- 6:49a real issue. But saying that, you know, there
- 6:52are ways around it. People can help you know with
- 6:56you, with your budgeting and your whatever else It is forward
- 6:59planning and everything like that.
- 7:01And there are loads of apps out there to help.
