- 0:00Hey, welcome back. I'm Dr. Hartung, and you're
- 0:03listening to the Family Chiropractic Center podcast
- 0:05coming to you from right here in Robinson Township.
- 0:09Today we're talking about something that I think
- 0:11is really important. And honestly, it doesn't
- 0:14get enough attention. We're talking about falls,
- 0:17specifically why they become more common as we
- 0:20get older and what you can actually do about
- 0:22it. Now, here's the thing. A lot of people assume
- 0:25that falling is just part of getting older. Like,
- 0:28it's inevitable. And I want to push back on that
- 0:31today. Because while the risk does go up with
- 0:33age, that doesn't mean you're powerless. Not
- 0:36even close. So let me break this down for you.
- 0:40As we age, a few things start to shift in our
- 0:42bodies. First, our balance system gets a little
- 0:45less sharp. You've got this incredible network
- 0:48working all the time to keep you upright. Your
- 0:51inner ear, your eyes, and the tiny sensors in
- 0:53your muscles and joints. Those sensors are called
- 0:56proprioceptors, and they're constantly sending
- 0:59signals to your brain about where your body is
- 1:01in space. Over time, that signaling can slow
- 1:05down. Your reaction time changes too, so when
- 1:08you hit a slippery patch or trip on a rug, your
- 1:11body just doesn't course correct as fast as it
- 1:13used to. Here's what's interesting, and this
- 1:16is where chiropractic really comes in. The spine
- 1:19plays a huge role in that communication system.
- 1:22When joints in your spine aren't moving the way
- 1:24they should, it can actually interfere with those
- 1:27proprioceptive signals. It's like trying to stream
- 1:30a video with a bad connection. The information
- 1:32is getting through, but it's choppy. Adjusting
- 1:36the spine helps restore that communication, which
- 1:38can genuinely improve your balance and coordination
- 1:41over time. We see this in practice all the time.
- 1:45The second big factor is muscle strength. As
- 1:48we get older, we naturally lose muscle mass.
- 1:51This process actually starts earlier than most
- 1:53people think, around our 30s and 40s, and it
- 1:56picks up pace after that. Weaker muscles in the
- 1:59core, the hips and the legs mean less stability,
- 2:03and less stability means more falls. Now for
- 2:06the practical stuff, because that's really why
- 2:08you're here. There are a few things you can start
- 2:10doing today. First, work on your leg and core
- 2:14strength. You don't need a gym membership. Simple
- 2:16things like standing up from a chair without
- 2:18using your hands or doing a slow heel -to -toe
- 2:21walk down a hallway, those kinds of exercises
- 2:24make a real difference. Second, take a look at
- 2:27your home. Throw rugs, poor lighting, and cluttered
- 2:30walkways are some of the most common culprits.
- 2:33Remove what you can. Add some grab bars in the
- 2:36bathroom if needed. These small changes save
- 2:39lives. I mean that. Third, stay hydrated and
- 2:43review your medications with your doctor. Certain
- 2:46medications can cause dizziness or affect your
- 2:48balance more than people realize. That's a conversation
- 2:51worth having. And fourth, don't ignore your spine
- 2:54and nervous system health. Regular chiropractic
- 2:57care keeps your joints moving, supports that
- 3:00proprioceptive communication we talked about,
- 3:02and helps your body respond better to the unexpected
- 3:05moments, like a curb you didn't see or a wet
- 3:08floor. Now, when should you come see us? If you've
- 3:11noticed you're feeling less steady on your feet,
- 3:13if you've had a fall recently or even a close
- 3:16call, that's your body telling you something.
- 3:19Don't wait until after a serious injury. Come
- 3:22in and let us take a look at how your spine is
- 3:24functioning, how your posture is holding up,
- 3:26and what we can do to help you feel more confident
- 3:29and stable in your daily life. Falls are not
- 3:32something you just have to accept. You have more
- 3:34control here than you might think, and we want
- 3:37to help you keep it. Thank you so much for tuning
