- Greg: Hey, what's up everybody? It is Monday, June 1st. I am your host, Greg Miller, and this is well actually it's ⁓ time for an update. This is no longer beliefs, ballots, and bets. ⁓ this is going to from this point forward be beliefs, ballots, and bulldogs. ⁓ truth be told, ⁓ I'll I'll come clean and and and be very transparent here. I have ⁓ I have been a gambler for darn near three decades and it's just time to to walk away. It's time to to stop making it such a part of my daily life. It is I I do have an addictive personality and gambling is without question probably the strongest addiction I ever dealt with. I haven't placed a wager since sometime probably mid February ⁓ and I plan on trying to keep it that way. ⁓ I I assure you, for those of you who've been following the picks, I've I've still been doing the work, still been running the models and and putting in the effort to come up with the plays. We're we're walking away with a with a little bit of a winning record here on the podcast, but truth be told, I just gotta be I gotta be more honest and transparent and and be true to myself. And and for the longest part of my life, gambling was one of my identifying characteristics. I legitimately gambled on something just about every day. ⁓ and and I will tell you that there's I have yet to find anything to replace that feeling. That that sense of that rush, those endorphins from from doing the research, putting in a chunk of money on a play and then sitting and waiting for the tip off or waiting for the game to go off. It it's it's something I miss, but but we're gonna find we're gonna find something to fill that void and and gambling is is no longer gonna be a part of of who I am. So that's ⁓ that's a little bit of news. It's gonna be beliefs, ballots, and bulldogs from this point forward. ⁓ the scripture will come first and foremost. That will be the priority. The the scripture portion, the the the Bible study will be a daily podcast, five, ten minutes max most days. ⁓ and then we'll we'll get into the the the ballots portion. We'll get into some some current events and some social slash political issues when when it warrants, when there's something worth discussing. ⁓ and then we're gonna get into the bulldogs. I I'm gonna have a little tagline with some UGA sports stuff, try to keep you guys in the loop, talk about some of the things I'm hearing from Athens. ⁓ and just some of the things I'm I'm looking forward to keeping up with, some storylines and things of that nature. ⁓ we ⁓ we'll get into the word today. It's ⁓ I I I've shared with this before. Anytime my daily devotional comes for the book of Proverbs, I I I get a little smile on my face. I'm a big fan of King Solomon and and the wisdom he displayed and and the way he communicates things to us. ⁓ Proverbs chapter 17, verses 27 and 28. No exception, just just an absolutely brilliant verse. Let's get to it. It says The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even tempered. Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues. This is probably a familiar verse to mouth. You know, it's it's one we've all heard. It you know, verse 27 is is quite clearly just talking about self-control. And then in twenty-eight it it talks about sort of the the appearance of wisdom. ⁓ but together they're they're really teaching us that that wise people aren't wise because they talk more, they're wise because they know when not to talk. ⁓ you know, you know, we can we can read verse 28 and and we can even laugh a little that you know even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent. It's it's somewhat humorous, and we we've all heard this before. But but reading before that, what leads up to that is what tells us why. It's you know the person who has wisdom. controls his tongue, controls his emotions and controls his reactions. Before Solomon even mentions silence, he he talks about restraint and and that's that's important. He's he's not teaching us to be passive, it's teaching us to be disciplined. You know, you could you could look at the the framing of today's message could could be something, hey, wisdom has has breaks. You know, everybody talks about intelligence and everybody wants to talk about knowledge. Very few people talk about restraint and and you know discernment. And you know, Solomon is is telling us here that that restraint is one of the clearest signs of wisdom. ⁓ and it's one that most people don't pay attention to. We we live in a culture that rewards speed. It's you know, fast opinions, fast reaction, fast outrage, judgments, but but wisdom and and and Solomon is calling us here, w wisdom is slower. Wisdom Wisdom pauses. Wisdom considers. Wisdom asks, hey, do do I really need to say this? Is this is this applicable? Is this helpful? I I there are people we all know who you you swear that there's not a single thought that enters their mind that doesn't come out of their mouth. And it's just not necessary. You know, just because you have a thought doesn't mean the whole world needs to hear it. Not everything that that rattles around in that noggin of your Needs to come out across your lips and out of your mouth. We have, we've become a society where, and and and obviously social media just feeds to this, where people just feel the need to to comment and have an opinion and share their opinion on everything. Every story, every controversy, every headline, every viral moment. And a lot of times it it's the it's the people who are who are talking about this stuff who are very ill-informed and sometimes know very little about the subject at all. You can pay attention and and this is it's a it sounds like a cliche, but it's it's very, very true. The the loudest voice in the room is rarely the wisest voice in the room. You think about that, and and it'll make sense. Most of the people who are so boisterous, so so volumeless in their their need to l share their opinion and their thoughts on everything, those are usually not the people you want their thoughts and opinions from. We we think about like, you know, taking it in in relationship standpoint and th and this may be the most practical application, think about how many how many arguments could be avoided. Like how many how many arguments start just because somebody just says the first thing that pops into their mouth and then boom, there we go. It's not the best thing, it definitely not the wisest thing, but it's just the first thing and they just have to get it out. But think about this in our marriage, you know, a a lot of a lot of marriages and a lot of our our interpersonal relationships, we don't need better arguments. We just need fewer reactions. We need the ability to sit silent and just let stuff slide, not have to address or call out everything. ⁓ y you can take this from a from a parenting standpoint. And you know a lot of times you we we see parents that and again I get it you know as a father I I love my girls more than I could possibly put into words. But we can't make parenting mistakes by reacting emotionally. We have to we have to be practical, we have to be wise, we have to be discerning and and and slow to to think through things before we react and before we say anything. The the verse is here, it it's it's directly about wisdom, but indirectly it's it's also it's it's about humility. It's you know, people people in our world constantly need to prove their right. And and this this comes from a deep-seated insecurity. We all we all know these people that just can't let anything go. They they can be a hundred percent wrong, but they still have to win the argument. And, you know, truly wise people, and and this is something I I I am working on. I I I jokingly tell people, you know, I'm trying to get to the stage in my life where if some weirdo comes up to me and swears that two plus two equals five, I just say, Hey, God bless you, have a good day. Good luck with that, and move on and don't let it bother me. wise people don't need to win every argument. They don't need to have the last word. And frankly, the the wise people, the smart people, they don't even need everybody in the room to know they're smart. The the older I get and and I am getting older, the the more I realize and I've thought about this through my life, the the people who I respect the most aren't always the one with the quickest responses or the quickest answers. Sometimes they're the people who have who have just learned the value of silence. Sometimes they're the people who don't share every thought or every opinion or every thought that they have. And so when they do speak, you find yourself listening. All right, let's talk about a little bit of ⁓ University of Georgia sports news. ⁓ had a couple cool things happening over the weekend. Congratulations to to fellow dog and and former Macon, Georgia local Russell Henley. ⁓ Russell won the the Charles Schwab Challenge ⁓ this this past weekend. Got real hot, closed down the stretch in in a good run, ⁓ sent it to a playoff, and and I think he won on the first hole. ⁓ it wasn't the it's not the most elite of fields at the Charles Schwab, but it's still a pretty darn good field. And and just congrats to Russell, man. I it it's it's cool to see a kid. He he went to a local private school in Macon that I was very familiar with. ⁓ shit was on the course with Russell a couple of times, though I don't think I ever played with him one-on-one personally. ⁓ but the cool thing is that this a ⁓ this now makes for 17 straight years. ⁓ that the UGA golf team has has had a winner on tour and that's ⁓ that's pretty cool. There's a there's a lot of cool guys out there to watch, big fans of obviously Russell, but but you got Chris Kirk and you got Bubba Watson and you got ⁓ Hudson, ⁓ dang Hudson Swafford. Got some good guys out there. ⁓ Kisner's fun to watch. Kisner's making a great announcement. But the the the dog golf team and Chris Hack's done a tremendous job. ⁓ but congrats to Russell Henley for for getting another PGA tour win. Hopefully not the last. I'm I'm ready to see him. He's he started to contend in some majors here and and make the dog nation proud. And hopefully, ⁓ hopefully that'll continue and he'll he'll win a couple more times this year. ⁓ and then on the college baseball front, the the Diamond Dogs ⁓ won the Athens regional yesterday, beat Liberty six to one. A little bit of ⁓ a little bit of drama with the ⁓ the go-ahead Trey Phelps home run and and him getting tossed and ejected from the game and and unfortunately set to set to miss the the opening game of the super regional. But Hey, you you survive in advance, the Dogs Beat Liberty will we'll advance to host the the super regional there in Athens, where we'll ⁓ we'll host the Bizarro Dogs, the the pretend and wannabe Bulldogs from from Starkville, Mississippi. And not sure if they bring cowbells to baseball games, but Lord let's hope not. And then what really matters for all dog fans is ⁓ ninety six days till football season, friends. And I I went back through my memory and man, I was trying to think of some some ninety sixes and and there's not a whole lot of memor ne memorable ones or at least not ones that popped into my mind. ⁓ I I remember Zion Logue, I remember Daquan Hawkins wearing it for a little while. But I gotta go back to to one of our earlier I I I will never forget old Pooh Bear ⁓ Ken Veal wearing number ninety six in in the Sugar Bowl back and I believe it was two thousand and one. Old Pooh Bear, I I I was on campus with Pooh Bear, that was a large human being and Shout out to number 96, Ken Veel. 96 days till Georgia football. And ⁓ can't speak for everybody, but I for one cannot wait. We're ⁓ we're not gonna talk about anything ⁓ social or current events or on the political front today. ⁓ just wrapped up a an episode with with my boy David of Common Sense Superheroes. ⁓ y'all get on there and give that a listen. That's where we get into some of our current event topics and social, social media related stuff and and political stuff, and we'll share our opinions there. ⁓ we opened it up pretty good on this one. There's some stuff you might want to hear. Get in there, listen to common sense superheroes. David's got another show you gotta listen to. Get on ⁓ it's called Front Porch with David. It is absolutely random, but ⁓ but I swear he he's an amusing fella. And just listening to his ramblings about weirdest stuff you'll ever think of, get on there listen to Front Porch with David. It it's good for your soul. And then we got another th third show in the rotation called Weird Friends with our buddy Matt Sheffield. I'm gonna try to reach out to Matt, see if we can get an episode. Matt will talk to us about all the conspiracy theories and all the weird stuff. And those shows will go on a little bit longer, but we get into some deep dive stuff, and it's it's pretty cool. So I ⁓ it's not lost on me the the irony of someone who is currently sitting in front of his computer screen recording himself and speaking into a microphone. ⁓ just on the off chance that maybe one or two people is actually listening to me. ⁓ I I get the irony of of me saying that that not all opinions need to be heard and not every thought needs to be be spoken. ⁓ I get it. You know, not and that's true. You know, not everybody needs a voice. Not every opinion needs to be heard. You know, we we've all been taught that that wisdom is having the right answer. And that that makes sense. But Solomon's teaching us that that sometimes the the greatest and purest form of wisdom is is often knowing when an answer isn't even necessary. And that for me is something I'm gonna work on. As always, guys, get in your Bible, say your prayers, love one another and tell the truth. God bless.
