- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Richard Duggan in the news. A young driver is
- 0:02Speaker 1: without their license after being pulled over for excess speed
- 0:05Speaker 1: in central Newfoundland. The RCMP pulled the vehicle over on
- 0:09Speaker 1: the road to the Aisles in Loon Bay Tuesday afternoon
- 0:12Speaker 1: after radar picked it up traveling at speeds of up
- 0:15Speaker 1: to one hundred and thirty three kilometers an hour in
- 0:17Speaker 1: a fifty kilometer an hour zone. The seventeen year old
- 0:20Speaker 1: was ticketed and their license was suspended. The vehicle they
- 0:23Speaker 1: were driving was seized and impounded. A man wanted by
- 0:26Speaker 1: police in central Newfoundland is now facing a slew of
- 0:28Speaker 1: new charges after being taken into custody on Tuesday night.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Twenty seven year old Cody Torreville caught the attention of
- 0:34Speaker 1: police after they spotted him during proactive patrols on Monday.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Police say Torroville fled after they attempted to pull him over.
- 0:42Speaker 1: The following day, the same vehicle was found outside a
- 0:44Speaker 1: home in Grandfall's Windsor. However, Torreville would not go willingly
- 0:48Speaker 1: with police. After an altercation, he sped away in what
- 0:51Speaker 1: police say was a dangerous manner. He was located a
- 0:54Speaker 1: short time later in Bishop's falls and taken into custody
- 0:57Speaker 1: without further insent. Torreville is now facing charges of flight
- 1:00Speaker 1: from police, dangerous driving, failing to comply with a probation order,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and driving while prohibited. Our CMP save further charges are possible.
- 1:09Speaker 1: A sixteen year old has had his ATV seized after
- 1:11Speaker 1: patrol officers notice the machine performing a stunt on Water
- 1:15Speaker 1: Street in Saint Lawrence on Tuesday afternoon. OURCMP followed the
- 1:18Speaker 1: machine and founded and the driver parked in a nearby lot.
- 1:21Speaker 1: The sixteen year old driver was unable to provide valid
- 1:24Speaker 1: insurance as requested by police. The ATV was seized and pounded.
- 1:28Speaker 1: The teen's license was suspended and two tickets were issued,
- 1:31Speaker 1: one for stunting and one for driving without insurance. The
- 1:35Speaker 1: opposition wants the province to provide free school supplies to
- 1:38Speaker 1: students in grades K to nine, but it's not clear
- 1:40Speaker 1: if that's something government will entertain. During last fall's provincial election,
- 1:44Speaker 1: the Liberals promised to provide free school supplies to children
- 1:47Speaker 1: up to grade six, with an estimated annual cost of
- 1:50Speaker 1: three million dollars. Now in Opposition leader John Hogan wants
- 1:54Speaker 1: government to make the same commitment and suggests that the
- 1:56Speaker 1: benefit be extended to students up to grade nine. In
- 1:59Speaker 1: its response to VOCM News, the Department of Education mentions
- 2:02Speaker 1: a variety of budget items like increases to the child benefit,
- 2:06Speaker 1: tax cuts, fee freezes, and other financial supports, as well
- 2:10Speaker 1: as ongoing consultations for the planned poverty reduction strategy. However,
- 2:14Speaker 1: it makes no mention of school supplies, nor does it
- 2:17Speaker 1: provide a direct response to the opposition suggestion. Government suggests
- 2:20Speaker 1: that residents provide feedback to the ongoing poverty reduction consultation process,
- 2:25Speaker 1: the deadline for which is the end of the month.
- 2:27Speaker 1: A growing number of companies are surveilling the online activities
- 2:31Speaker 1: of workers in an effort to track their productivity. TD
- 2:34Speaker 1: Bank recently informed employees that their screen time is being tracked,
- 2:38Speaker 1: joining other companies like Bell, which is doing the same.
- 2:41Speaker 1: That's raising questions about privacy, among other concerns. Local tech
- 2:45Speaker 1: blogger Kevin Andrews says whether the use of AI programs
- 2:48Speaker 1: to log in employees' keystrokes and watch sites they're visiting
- 2:51Speaker 1: improves productivity is debatable because you.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Know, once the employees not a they're being measured by
- 2:56Speaker 2: their computer activity. Human nature kicks in and I go
- 3:00Speaker 2: to thinking, you know, how can I get this job done?
- 3:02Speaker 2: They may be thinking, you know, how can I make
- 3:04Speaker 2: sure the computer thinks I'm working more? And so I
- 3:07Speaker 2: think that's the danger of using sort of activity as
- 3:10Speaker 2: a substitute for results.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I'm Richard Duggan,
