Latest / The Chosen People / Elijah: Fire From Heaven
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Previously on The Chosen People. There is one man, Micaiah.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Son of Imla. But I hate him. Hate him? He
- 0:16Speaker 2: never prophesies good concerning me, only evil. Very well.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Hear ye, hear ye. I saw all Israel scattered on
- 0:29Speaker 3: the mountains like sheep with no shepherd. And lo, Yahweh
- 0:33Speaker 3: himself did speak, saying, These have no master. Let them
- 0:38Speaker 3: return to their homes in peace.
- 0:41Speaker 2: What did I tell you, Jehoshaphat? His proclamations are never good,
- 0:46Speaker 2: always evil.
- 0:48Speaker 3: The Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouths
- 0:52Speaker 3: of all these prophets of yours. Yahweh has decreed your ruin.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Insolent whelp! Tell me, which way did the spirit of
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yahweh go when he left me to speak to you?
- 1:06Speaker 3: If you return in victory, God has not spoken through me.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Mark my words, the only one who will be victorious
- 1:15Speaker 3: in this story is Yahweh, not you.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Hold the line. It won't be long now, before the
- 1:27Speaker 2: dogs come.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I suppose I mourn him as one would a lost sandal.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Less sorrowful, more perturbed that now I have to find.
- 1:38Speaker 2: A new one.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Ahaziah had never been meant to wear the crown.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Not really.
- 1:52Speaker 1: It was supposed to go to one of Ahab's stronger sons,
- 1:57Speaker 1: the ones with their father's wits and their mother's teeth.
- 2:01Speaker 1: But war had taken them, and disease had claimed others,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and so the crown of Israel had passed to him,
- 2:10Speaker 1: not by merit, not by strength, but by the cold,
- 2:14Speaker 1: cruel lottery of survival. Ahaziah was not his father. He
- 2:21Speaker 1: had none of Ahab's determination, none of his wit. He
- 2:26Speaker 1: certainly had none of Jezebel's ruthless cunning. And worst of all,
- 2:31Speaker 1: he knew it. The people whispered it in the markets.
- 2:35Speaker 1: His own servants muttered it when they thought he couldn't hear.
- 2:40Speaker 1: His enemies, Syria, Moab, Judah, saw Israel's new king and
- 2:45Speaker 1: sharpened their swords. And now he had fallen. through the
- 2:51Speaker 1: lattice of his own upper room like an idiot, like
- 2:55Speaker 1: a drunken court jester.
- 2:58Speaker 2: The wounds were deep.
- 3:00Speaker 1: He lay on his bed, sweat pooling at his collarbone,
- 3:03Speaker 1: his ribs a ruined mess beneath the bandages. Every breath
- 3:08Speaker 1: was a labour. He lay there, whimpering commands at his servant.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Go. Go to Ekron. Ask Beelzebub if I will recover.
- 3:27Speaker 4: My lord, should we not inquire of Yahweh?
- 3:33Speaker 2: Do not speak that name to me.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Yahweh, the God of his ancestors, the God of the prophets...
- 3:43Speaker 1: The god who had hounded his father to the grave.
- 3:47Speaker 1: He could not bow to that god, even in his
- 3:50Speaker 1: pathetic state. Because to do so would be to admit
- 3:55Speaker 1: what everyone already whispered. That his kingdom was a dying ember.
- 4:01Speaker 1: That he ruled only by the lingering fumes of his
- 4:04Speaker 1: mother's terror.
- 4:05Speaker 2: And his father's blood. Go.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Go now.
- 4:12Speaker 2: They left.
- 4:13Speaker 1: The doors slammed behind them. Ahaziah lay back, panting, swallowing
- 4:19Speaker 1: the taste of bile and dread. The messengers rode hard
- 4:25Speaker 1: for Ekron, dust rising in the torchlight. The road stretched ahead,
- 4:31Speaker 1: winding through the hills, silent but for the whisper of
- 4:35Speaker 1: wind through the trees. Suddenly, they saw him, not emerging
- 4:40Speaker 1: from the darkness. not stepping onto the road, just there.
- 4:46Speaker 1: A figure rooted to the earth, cloak heavy around his shoulders,
- 4:51Speaker 1: the staff in his hand planted like an anchor. There
- 4:55Speaker 1: could be no mistake. It was Elijah, the prophet of fire.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Beside him stood his apprentice, Elisha, arms crossed, studying the
- 5:07Speaker 1: approaching riders like a gambler sizing up a rigged game.
- 5:11Speaker 1: but it was the third figure that made the air crackle.
- 5:15Speaker 1: He stood just behind Elijah, his form shimmering, as if
- 5:20Speaker 1: the very air around him bent in reverence. A man,
- 5:25Speaker 1: but not a man. When he moved, the dust did
- 5:29Speaker 1: not stir beneath his feet. Elijah sighed, rubbing his temple
- 5:34Speaker 1: like a man enduring a familiar headache.
- 5:38Speaker 2: You'll Always show up when things are about to get interesting.
- 5:43Speaker 2: And yet, you still act surprised. Not surprised. Just... exhausted. So,
- 5:53Speaker 2: are we just going to not talk about the glowing man, or...
- 5:59Speaker 2: Show some respect, boy. He's no man. He's an Elohim
- 6:03Speaker 2: of the Lord. An ancient one. The one who speaks
- 6:06Speaker 2: for Yahweh himself.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Elisha raised an eyebrow. The angel smirked.
- 6:13Speaker 2: He will understand in time.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Elijah exhaled through his nose. There was a weight in
- 6:20Speaker 1: those words, a current beneath them that Elisha could not
- 6:24Speaker 1: yet feel.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Well, master, I can see where you get your affection
- 6:28Speaker 4: for the cryptic.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Elijah ignored him. He turned to the angel with a
- 6:34Speaker 1: resigned expression. My time is nearly up, isn't it? The
- 6:40Speaker 1: angel did not answer. He did not need to.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I assume I don't get a say in the matter?
- 6:48Speaker 2: You never did. Wait, what are you two talking? Elijah,
- 6:53Speaker 2: it is time for one last assignment. Ahaziah has forsaken
- 6:58Speaker 2: the covenant. You must put the fear of the Lord
- 7:01Speaker 2: in him and in those who serve him. Tell him.
- 7:06Speaker 2: of the judgment to come.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Elijah's expression was unreadable, but for the first time, Elisha
- 7:14Speaker 1: caught something beneath the iron, something deep, something final. The
- 7:19Speaker 1: realization hit like a blade between the ribs. His master
- 7:24Speaker 1: was leaving soon. The angel smiled warmly at the prophets,
- 7:30Speaker 1: and then, light disappeared. a flash that tore through the
- 7:34Speaker 1: air like a blade of pure radiance.
- 7:37Speaker 2: And then he was gone.
- 7:39Speaker 1: In his place, a mighty wind rushed, rippling towards the
- 7:44Speaker 1: king's incoming messengers. Elisha exhaled, blinking against the afterimage burned
- 7:50Speaker 1: into his sight.
- 7:52Speaker 2: What a dramatic exit. Seems excessive, don't you think? No subtlety.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Elijah ignored his apprentice. His jaw was set. His eyes
- 8:02Speaker 1: already locked on the messengers, who sat frozen in their saddles,
- 8:07Speaker 1: gripping their reins as if they might keep them tethered
- 8:09Speaker 1: to reality. Elijah shouted at them.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Tell me, is it because there is no God in
- 8:16Speaker 2: Israel that you fools go to inquire of Baal-zebub? The
- 8:21Speaker 2: leader flinched.
- 8:23Speaker 4: We were ordered.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Don't give me that. We are just following command's horse dung.
- 8:31Speaker 2: You know the law of Moses. If you want to
- 8:34Speaker 2: listen to that, listen to me speak from the Lord himself.
- 8:39Speaker 2: You will not reach Ekron, and your king will not
- 8:43Speaker 2: rise from his bed. He will die. The wind rose.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Elisha watched the messengers shudder, watched the way their hands
- 8:54Speaker 1: trembled on the reins. The messengers did not argue. They
- 8:58Speaker 1: turned their horses and rode back the way they came.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Elisha searched to look at his master for a long while.
- 9:06Speaker 1: It looked as though a weight was slowly.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Falling from his chest. You're really going, aren't you?
- 9:14Speaker 1: Elijah did not answer. The messengers returned pale, hollow-eyed, looking
- 9:23Speaker 1: as if they had glimpsed something they were never meant
- 9:26Speaker 1: to see. Ahaziah forced himself upright, pain screaming through his ribs.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Well?
- 9:34Speaker 4: My lord, we never reached Akron.
- 9:38Speaker 2: What?
- 9:39Speaker 4: A man, a prophet, intercepted us.
- 9:43Speaker 2: A prophet?
- 9:45Speaker 4: Well, three prophets, then two, strangely. They said that you
- 9:52Speaker 4: will not rise from your bed, that you will die.
- 9:57Speaker 2: The room went silent.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Ahaz.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Breath was ragged, fury simmering just beneath the surface. He
- 10:05Speaker 1: clenched his jaw.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Elijah.
- 10:10Speaker 1: A name like an old wound reopened. His father's ghost
- 10:15Speaker 1: lurked at the edges of the room.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Elijah. Elijah.
- 10:19Speaker 1: The storm that Ahab could never outrun. The prophet who
- 10:24Speaker 1: defied kings and called down fire. The executioner of his
- 10:29Speaker 1: mother's priests. Ahaziah took a breath, then rage.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Just send men, a battalion, fifty soldiers. Bring him to me, now!
- 10:43Speaker 1: The messenger bowed, retreating. Ahaziah sat in the thick silence,
- 10:50Speaker 1: his ribs aching, his pulse a thud, thud, thud of fury.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Elijah had delivered his verdict. Ahaziah would deliver his. King
- 11:03Speaker 1: Ahaziah's men came like thunder. Elijah stood at the crest
- 11:09Speaker 1: of the hill, unmoving, unblinking, his cloak coiling in the
- 11:14Speaker 1: wind like a living thing. Below him, Elisha shifted his weight,
- 11:19Speaker 1: fingers twitching as he stroked his short beard.
- 11:23Speaker 2: That's a lot of men. Yes. They're armed. Most soldiers are.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Then they saw them.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Fifty men, steel catching the last light of the day,
- 11:38Speaker 1: faces set like stone. A captain at the front, his
- 11:42Speaker 1: stance wide, his hand never straying far from the hilt
- 11:46Speaker 1: of his sword. The wind was rising, an unnatural thing,
- 11:51Speaker 1: pulling at cloaks and banners, hissing through the dried grass
- 11:55Speaker 1: like the whisper of something vast and unseen. The captain
- 12:00Speaker 1: stepped forward, chin raised.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Man of God, by order of King Ahaziah you are
- 12:07Speaker 2: to come down at once.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Elijah turned his head slightly, just enough for Elisha to
- 12:13Speaker 1: see his face. Elisha felt a shudder pass.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Through his bones.
- 12:19Speaker 1: There was rage in Elijah's eyes. Not mere annoyance, not
- 12:24Speaker 1: the dry exasperation he so often showed. This was real,
- 12:29Speaker 1: holy fury. Because this was not just about the king.
- 12:34Speaker 1: This was about Ahab's legacy. This was about Israel bleeding
- 12:40Speaker 1: out under the weight of its own rebellion, about Jezebel's
- 12:44Speaker 1: corruption still festering in the heart of the kingdom, about
- 12:48Speaker 1: a people who had seen fire fall from heaven and
- 12:52Speaker 1: the Red Sea split in two, and still chose to
- 12:56Speaker 1: bow to lesser gods. Elijah's jaw tightened.
- 13:01Speaker 2: So, the son of Ahab sends men to seize me,
- 13:06Speaker 2: as if the Lord were some court magician he could summon. Master,
- 13:12Speaker 2: maybe we should go with them. Come now, Elisha. Where
- 13:16Speaker 2: is your faith? If the Lord could handle the entire
- 13:19Speaker 2: Egyptian army at the Red Sea, surely fifty men is
- 13:23Speaker 2: no large task. Have you not read the writings of Moses? Yes, Master,
- 13:29Speaker 2: of course, but I just think.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Before the apprentice could finish his thought, Elijah stepped forward.
- 13:37Speaker 1: The wind caught the edge of his cloak, sent it
- 13:39Speaker 1: billowing like smoke. The sky, already dimming, darkened further. Clouds
- 13:46Speaker 1: thickening like ink spilling across parchment. Elisha could feel it now.
- 13:52Speaker 1: The weight in the air, the hum beneath his feet,
- 13:55Speaker 1: like the very ground was waiting. The captain's hand tightened
- 14:00Speaker 1: around his sword.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Come down, man of God!
- 14:05Speaker 1: Elijah's voice cracked through the air like a thunderclap.
- 14:10Speaker 2: You fools! If I am a man of God, let
- 14:13Speaker 2: fire fall from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!
- 14:19Speaker 1: Elijah's words echoed, rolling down the hill like a shockwave,
- 14:24Speaker 1: carving silence into the world. For a moment, there was nothing.
- 14:29Speaker 1: The captain's sneer faltered for half a breath. He glanced up,
- 14:34Speaker 1: just for a moment, just to check. The sky was still.
- 14:40Speaker 1: One soldier let out a chuckle, then another. Then a
- 14:44Speaker 1: ripple of laughter spread through the ranks. The captain exhaled
- 14:48Speaker 1: through his nose, shaking his head.
- 14:52Speaker 2: That's what I thought. His grip tightened on his sword.
- 14:57Speaker 2: If you won't come down on your own, we will
- 15:00Speaker 2: drag you.
- 15:02Speaker 1: The men moved, boots scraping against dirt, armor clanking, swords lifting.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Elisha inhaled sharply, bracing.
- 15:11Speaker 2: For the worst.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Then it happened all at once. The sky tore open,
- 15:18Speaker 1: not like a storm, not like rain breaking through heavy clouds.
- 15:23Speaker 2: This was violence.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Lightning split the heavens, a wound of searing white that
- 15:30Speaker 1: burned the shape of its fury into the retinas of
- 15:33Speaker 1: all who dared look upon it. And from that wound,
- 15:37Speaker 1: the fire came. Not drifting down, not falling like an
- 15:42Speaker 1: earthly flame, it plunged. A spear of raw, undiluted judgment.
- 15:49Speaker 1: A river of white-hot wrath. It did not flicker, did
- 15:54Speaker 1: not waver, did not spread like mortal flames seeking something
- 15:59Speaker 1: to devour.
- 16:01Speaker 2: It simply erased.
- 16:03Speaker 1: One moment there were men standing on the hill below,
- 16:07Speaker 1: the next, nothing. The smell of ozone and burning flesh
- 16:12Speaker 1: filled Elisha's nostrils, but the flesh was already gone.
- 16:16Speaker 2: No screams, no bodies.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Just ash whipping through the wind like the remnants of
- 16:22Speaker 1: a dead civilization. Elisha had seen fire fall before, but
- 16:28Speaker 1: this was different. It was not a sign to prove
- 16:32Speaker 1: a point. This was judgment.
- 16:36Speaker 2: I saw what you did on Carmel, but this.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Elijah turned to him, and for the first time, Elisha
- 16:44Speaker 1: saw something beyond the fury, the weight of it, the
- 16:49Speaker 1: massive burden of this calling. Elijah took no joy in
- 16:53Speaker 1: watching men perish. In his eyes burned twin fires of
- 16:58Speaker 1: righteousness and sorrow.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Look, son, being a prophet is not about spectacle. It
- 17:08Speaker 2: is not about miracles. It is about carrying the weight
- 17:13Speaker 2: of God's justice.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Elisha exhaled sharply, grounding himself, trying to shake the trembling
- 17:21Speaker 1: from his hands. The captain emerged, face half-melted and armor singed.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Please, please, man of God, have mercy. Go back to
- 17:35Speaker 2: your king. Tell him what you have seen. Tell him
- 17:39Speaker 2: Yahweh has spoken.
- 17:42Speaker 1: The captain did not hesitate. He stumbled to his feet,
- 17:46Speaker 1: barely able to stand, and fled. Elisha watched him go,
- 17:52Speaker 1: the fire still burning in his vision long after it
- 17:55Speaker 1: had vanished from the sky. Elijah entered King Ahaziah's halls.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Like a storm.
- 18:08Speaker 1: His bones were older, but the fire in his belly
- 18:11Speaker 1: still burned hot. Elisha followed, keeping silent behind him. Ahaziah
- 18:18Speaker 1: lay sprawled in his bed, propped up by pillows that
- 18:21Speaker 1: did nothing to disguise the sweat pooling at his collarbone,
- 18:25Speaker 1: the waxy pallor creeping across his skin.
- 18:29Speaker 2: He was failing.
- 18:31Speaker 1: His ribs ached with every breath, his lips were dry,
- 18:35Speaker 1: but the cup of wine beside.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Him sat untouched.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And yet, his voice still carried its old petulance, its
- 18:43Speaker 1: old arrogance, like a boy refusing to acknowledge the coming night.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Elijah, finally, you've come to face me.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Elijah stopped at the foot of the bed.
- 19:01Speaker 2: He did not bow. He did not greet the king.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Ahaziah's fingers twitched against the sheets, but he lifted his chin,
- 19:10Speaker 1: desperate to hold on to the illusion that he was
- 19:12Speaker 1: still the ruler of this place.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Tell me, prophet, who will I leave? Shut up! Ahaziah blinked.
- 19:26Speaker 1: His mouth twitched as if he wanted to argue, but
- 19:30Speaker 1: Elijah was already shaking his head, already moving, already cutting
- 19:35Speaker 1: him down before he could rise.
- 19:38Speaker 2: You dare to summon me here with your breath as
- 19:42Speaker 2: short as your time to ask if you will live? You,
- 19:46Speaker 2: son of Ahab, son of Jezebel. who saw the fire
- 19:51Speaker 2: fall at Carmel, who clung to your father's robes as
- 19:55Speaker 2: the one true God turned your mother's priests to ash?
- 20:00Speaker 1: There was no satisfaction in Elijah's voice, no playful teasing
- 20:05Speaker 1: as he had with Ahab, no righteous glee. Just disgust,
- 20:12Speaker 1: Elijah took a step closer to Ahaziah.
- 20:16Speaker 2: I remember you, boy. I remember the way you trembled
- 20:20Speaker 2: in the shadow of your father. I remember the way
- 20:24Speaker 2: you saw the truth that day and still turned your
- 20:28Speaker 2: back on it.
- 20:29Speaker 1: The king opened his mouth. Some feeble attempt at a defense,
- 20:34Speaker 1: Elijah didn't let him.
- 20:36Speaker 2: You could have bowed. You could have repented. Instead, you
- 20:42Speaker 2: ran to the shrines of Baal like your witch mother. Instead,
- 20:48Speaker 2: you built altars to silence. Instead, you threw in your
- 20:54Speaker 2: lot with a corpse god that cannot even keep you
- 20:58Speaker 2: from falling through the floor of your home.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Elijah leaned in closer, voice dropping to something almost gentle.
- 21:07Speaker 2: They still sing songs about the greatness of King David.
- 21:15Speaker 2: When the nation had a real king, a real leader,
- 21:22Speaker 2: a man, not a shriveling and entitled brat, you shamed
- 21:28Speaker 2: the ancestors who came before you and bled for the
- 21:31Speaker 2: throne you wrought upon. Ahaziah was breathing hard now.
- 21:36Speaker 1: He wanted to speak, to rise, to throw back some
- 21:40Speaker 1: semblance of control, but Elijah stopped him.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Do not speak. Only listen. You will not leave this bed.
- 21:51Speaker 2: You will not rise again. You will die.
- 21:57Speaker 1: The silence pressed down, thick and suffocating. Ahaziah's lips parted,
- 22:05Speaker 1: a whisper of something, fear maybe, a plea, but Elijah
- 22:10Speaker 1: was already turning, already gone. Elijah and Elisha had left
- 22:20Speaker 1: the king's presence, widening the distance between them and the
- 22:24Speaker 1: palace walls. The sun was setting, painting crimson hues over
- 22:29Speaker 1: the dry hills of summer. They sat on a stone
- 22:33Speaker 1: resting upon a hill. Elisha sat beside his master, looking
- 22:38Speaker 1: out over the city.
- 22:40Speaker 2: What fuels your rage? At first, it was the blatant corruption,
- 22:47Speaker 2: the taxes, the way the kings paid little regard for
- 22:52Speaker 2: the people. Injustice.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Elijah pursed his lips. searching his heart for the right
- 23:00Speaker 1: words to answer his apprentice.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Ahab, Jezebel, Ahaziah are not the true enemy. They were
- 23:10Speaker 2: never the disease, Elisha. They were only symptoms. What do
- 23:16Speaker 2: you mean? The true enemy is older than Israel, older
- 23:23Speaker 2: than this kingdom, older than the altars of Baal. Ancient. Ancient.
- 23:31Speaker 2: It slithered into the garden. It whispered to our first
- 23:37Speaker 2: mother and coiled around our first father. Elisha swallowed hard.
- 23:44Speaker 2: The words stirred something in him, something deep, something older
- 23:49Speaker 2: than his own lifetime. Memories.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Sitting at his father's feet as a boy. His father's voice,
- 23:57Speaker 1: low and steady, reading from the words of Moses. The
- 24:01Speaker 1: serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Did God really say, you will not surely die? They
- 24:11Speaker 1: seemed like stories, but Elijah knew they weren't fairy tales.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Elijah exhaled, his gaze fixed on the darkened horizon.
- 24:22Speaker 2: The people refused to see it. They refused to listen.
- 24:28Speaker 2: The Lord brought us out of Egypt. He split the sea,
- 24:34Speaker 2: fed us in the wilderness, and made a covenant with
- 24:38Speaker 2: us in fire and blood. He has shown himself again
- 24:42Speaker 2: and again and again, and still, still they run to
- 24:48Speaker 2: the gods of the nations, to the empty idols, to
- 24:53Speaker 2: the tombs, same lies, different skins.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Elijah's hands tightened into fists.
- 25:01Speaker 2: They could not see it, Elisha. They could not see
- 25:05Speaker 2: that the Lord is doing something with our people. He
- 25:09Speaker 2: led us to this land for a reason. The story
- 25:12Speaker 2: is much bigger than what is front of our eyes.
- 25:16Speaker 2: They are like our forefathers in the wilderness. They are blind.
- 25:22Speaker 1: The wind pressed against them, cold and restless. Then Elijah turned,
- 25:28Speaker 1: and for the first time in all their years together,
- 25:32Speaker 1: Elisha saw something in his master's eyes he had never
- 25:36Speaker 1: seen before.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Not rage, not even sorrow. Hope. But you, you will
- 25:45Speaker 2: show them. My apprentice.
