- 0:00Aloha. Friday morning. Heavy showers are still soaking the eastern islands, but they're tapering off through today. By afternoon, conditions improve noticeably — which means the back half of your day is looking pretty good.
- 1:44The low-pressure system that drove the rain is moving away, and trade winds are returning from the east this weekend. Leeward and west-facing coasts clear out and stay mostly dry. Windward slopes and higher elevations will still catch some overnight showers, but daytime periods should be mostly clear. Winds are fresh today and tonight, then ease back by Sunday.
- 2:02On the water: Oʻahu's north shore is at 6.2 feet — experienced swimmers and surfers only. Kauaʻi's Hanalei is even bigger at 6.6 feet. South shores are moderate — Waikīkī at 4.8 feet, Kāʻanapali at 4.1 feet. The Big Island's running small at 2.7 feet. Watch for shore break and rip currents wherever you go in.
- 2:18Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has several closures this week: Halemaʻumaʻu Trail and part of Byron Ledge are closed for safety, the Keanakākoʻi side is closed due to volcanic unrest, and Kīpukapuaulu Trail is closed because of hazardous trees. Volcanic ash is also a concern in the park. Check conditions before heading to the Big Island.
- 2:35If you're planning an Oʻahu hike this afternoon when things dry out, our piece on short hikes breaks down why mileage alone doesn't tell you what a walk will feel like. Diamond Head and Koko Crater look similar on a map but they're completely different experiences — one's stairs, one's a steep cinder cone. Knowing that before you start saves your knees and helps you pick the right hike for today's clearing conditions.
