1:45
Speaker 5: We're going to talk to him. Brian Dayton from the

1:49
Speaker 5: they're looking forward to their legislative session, and so we'll

Speaker 5: get to kind of pick his brain on on some
1:55
Speaker 5: things that they'll be looking for in the session. And
1:57
Speaker 5: the first week or so of the Morrissey administration. That's
2:00
Speaker 5: coming up a little bit later on, and Restaurant Week
2:02
Speaker 5: continues in Charleston. We're going to talk to one of
2:05
Speaker 5: the restaurant tours, if you will, of one of the
2:07
Speaker 5: finer eating establishments in Charleston and just kind of talk
2:10
Speaker 5: about what restaurant Week means and how important it is
2:13
Speaker 5: to them. Your calls and text are always welcome to

2:20
Speaker 5: zero four nine three five five zero zero eight. Let's
2:23
Speaker 5: start throw in the newsroom. Let's go to Jeff Jenkins. Jeff,
2:26
Speaker 5: good morning. Possibly starting to wind down. Well, I guess
2:30
Speaker 5: it's already been winded down, for lack of a better term,
2:33
Speaker 5: in the White Feather and lancetrom.
2:36
Speaker 7: Yeah, So the jury meeting right now just gathered down
2:40
Speaker 7: the Judicial building downtown. So they'll start their deliberations, they'll
2:43
Speaker 7: get organized, choose ay jury foreman, and then start going
2:47
Speaker 7: over the evidence. You've got twenty counts each against White
2:50
Speaker 7: Feather and Lance and connections with the lesed abuse and
2:53
Speaker 7: neglect and trafficking of their five adopted kids and a
2:57
Speaker 7: trial that's been now about eleven days, and so things
3:00
Speaker 7: wrapped up yesterday with closing arguments from both the prosecution
3:04
Speaker 7: and the defense. So a lot for this jury to consider.
3:07
Speaker 7: You know, there's all these different counts against so there
3:12
Speaker 7: are twenty counts against each one and they're the same
3:14
Speaker 7: counts against against them. But they could, you know, they
3:17
Speaker 7: could do some splitting up to the verdict here, they
3:20
Speaker 7: could find all guilty, they could acquit. I mean, they
3:24
Speaker 7: got a couple of choices here which they could do.
3:26
Speaker 7: And there were sixty pages, Dave, sixty pages of jury
3:30
Speaker 7: instructions that circuit, as Mary Claire Akers read aloud yesterday,
3:35
Speaker 7: and so that's something that they'll have with them, their
3:38
Speaker 7: jury instructions. So they'll be going over there. So this
3:41
Speaker 7: might take a little while, might take a little while.
3:42
Speaker 7: We'll see.
3:43
Speaker 6: I don't know.
3:44
Speaker 5: And you've covered trials for a long time. You've got
3:46
Speaker 5: this trial going on to Charleston, but also you have
3:48
Speaker 5: the Cochrane trial going on in Beckley.
3:50
Speaker 6: But it's gotten national attention. You know.
3:52
Speaker 5: Court TV of course has been streaming that entire thing.
3:55
Speaker 5: I don't I can't recall, maybe you do a time
3:57
Speaker 5: when we had two big trials like this going on
3:59
Speaker 5: in the state the same time, and they're almost mirrors
4:02
Speaker 5: of each other as far as the timing when it
4:04
Speaker 5: comes to the jury deliberations when it comes to a
4:07
Speaker 5: verdict being.
4:08
Speaker 7: Right, Yeah, the same thing in Beckley to day. The
4:09
Speaker 7: jury got there a couple of minutes ago at nine
4:11
Speaker 7: o'clock and they're starting their deliberation. So yeah, they're at
4:14
Speaker 7: the same stage. You know, different charges. Obviously a lot
4:17
Speaker 7: of different circumstances there, but yeah, two big trials who
4:21
Speaker 7: talked about cases much talked about cases, and you just
4:25
Speaker 7: never know how a jury is going to react. I mean,
4:28
Speaker 7: you know, it's the burdens on the prosecution to prove
4:33
Speaker 7: beyond a reasonable doubt these charges. So the prosecution has
4:37
Speaker 7: the larger burden here. Sure, in the Beckley case, there's
4:40
Speaker 7: really no physical evidence. It's all circumstantial. The prosecutors they
4:46
Speaker 7: say that, you know, this is a circumstantial case against
4:49
Speaker 7: Natalie Cochrane. We'll see what the jury does there. And
4:51
Speaker 7: the defense has put on a lot of evidence itself
4:54
Speaker 7: in that case. So we're just wait, you just waited out.
4:57
Speaker 6: You know, we have our.
4:58
Speaker 7: Reporter down downtown here. You just kind of wait to
5:02
Speaker 7: see what the jury does. Now, you know, jury's do
5:04
Speaker 7: a few things they can uh you know, sometimes they
5:08
Speaker 7: may have a question they want to ask the judge,
5:10
Speaker 7: So the judge brings the jury in, or she'll bring
5:12
Speaker 7: the attorneys in and you know they'll and they'll show
5:15
Speaker 7: answer their question. They may want to you know, see
5:18
Speaker 7: if they can see something or you know, it could
5:20
Speaker 7: be anything because they may want to go to lunch.
5:22
Speaker 7: I mean, it just could be anything. Uh So you know,
5:25
Speaker 7: we're kind of on jury watch and we'll you know,
5:27
Speaker 7: we'll see what happens and when they reach a unanimous verdict,
5:29
Speaker 7: got to be unanimous. When they reach a unanimous verdict,
5:33
Speaker 7: then they'll bring everybody back in the court and the
5:35
Speaker 7: announce it.
5:36
Speaker 8: Right.
5:36
Speaker 5: Of course, we'll have coverage on Aaron Online. Jeff, I
5:38
Speaker 5: appreciate you being here. Tell you thanks a lot. Okay,
5:40
Speaker 5: Jeff Jenkins from the newsroom into nine twelve Dave Alan
5:42
Speaker 5: showing five Ayeline brought to you in part by Morgan
5:44
Speaker 5: and Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. If you're injured,
5:47
Speaker 5: visit for the People dot Com. We got to Alexander Gostrud,
5:50
Speaker 5: who's the candidate for US Senate coming up here momentarily.
5:53
Speaker 5: Also a little bit later on, we're gonna be joined
5:54
Speaker 5: by Brian Dayton from the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce.
5:57
Speaker 5: Restaurant Week continues to Charleston. Jay Sinker was here. He's
6:00
Speaker 5: the owner of Barcada's and he joined us in the
6:02
Speaker 5: studio this morning. Good morning, sir, how are you.
6:05
Speaker 9: I'm doing well?
6:06
Speaker 5: You got talk you got so caught up and the
6:08
Speaker 5: whole thing there with with with Jeff. You didn't realize
6:10
Speaker 5: it seemed to go on the air, did you. You
6:12
Speaker 5: don't really need the headphones.
6:13
Speaker 6: It's fine. Oh did just be me and you talking?
6:15
Speaker 6: Come step in the microphone for me there a little bit. Okay, Jay,
6:18
Speaker 6: welcome to the show. Thanks for being here.
6:20
Speaker 9: Thank you for having me. Dave appreciate this.
6:22
Speaker 5: Talk about your place for people that may not be
6:25
Speaker 5: aware of your restaurant. How long you been there, what's
6:28
Speaker 5: the what's the what kind of foods do you offer?
6:32
Speaker 10: So Barcado's was started in twenty nineteen. The timing was
6:36
Speaker 10: kind of unfortunate. We were open for three weeks and
6:40
Speaker 10: then COVID hit. Barcatta's was is a Filipina term that
6:46
Speaker 10: means my group of friends hanging out to go get
6:49
Speaker 10: a beer, and we thought that that would be appropriate.
6:52
Speaker 6: I love it. I love it already for a restaurant.
6:56
Speaker 10: When we initially started, we were fortunate to have Paul
7:00
Speaker 10: Smith as a consultant and helped us launch, create the menu,
7:06
Speaker 10: and launch it. He was kind of an honorary member
7:10
Speaker 10: of the Filipino family growing up, so he really knew
7:14
Speaker 10: kind of our ingredients and methods of cooking. So it
7:17
Speaker 10: was a good It was a good fit for us.
7:21
Speaker 10: Then we went through COVID and interesting enough, we now
7:27
Speaker 10: have a chef. His name Chef Daniel Deheshu's incredibly talented guy.
7:32
Speaker 10: He's a he's a culinary gangster.
7:35
Speaker 6: He came culinary gangster.
7:38
Speaker 9: Yes, so he came.
7:41
Speaker 10: And him and his business partners opened up Keda when
7:45
Speaker 10: Disney World went down. He was a chef down in
7:48
Speaker 10: Disney World, stay at a stake in sushi establishment, and
7:53
Speaker 10: when it.
7:53
Speaker 9: Closed down, they all moved.
7:55
Speaker 11: They started Keda.
7:57
Speaker 10: A lot of those people went back when Disney opened
8:00
Speaker 10: open back up. But Daniel fell in love with West
8:03
Speaker 10: Virginia and the people of West Virginia, and I love hearingously.
8:10
Speaker 9: We hooked up together. So that's our new chef.
8:13
Speaker 10: So we're kind of going through a transition period where
8:16
Speaker 10: we were still bringing in the highlighted favorites of our customers,
8:23
Speaker 10: but by customer demand and by if we were going
8:26
Speaker 10: to utilize Daniel correctly, we had to elevate the menu
8:30
Speaker 10: and add certain things. So now if you go there,
8:33
Speaker 10: you can get steaks and seafoods, things that Daniel was
8:36
Speaker 10: comfortable cooking.
8:39
Speaker 6: Things that are in his wheelhouse. That's exactly David.
8:42
Speaker 5: What are some of the most popular things on the menu,
8:44
Speaker 5: And granted you're going to make me hungry, so just.
8:47
Speaker 10: But I'm always hung A really popular a Filipino staple
8:52
Speaker 10: is chicken adobo, so you can get that, and then
8:57
Speaker 10: the tunabowl over rice and noodles is really really popular
9:01
Speaker 10: in the burritos.
9:02
Speaker 9: But with the new elevated menu, all the steaks are are.
9:07
Speaker 10: Really popular in swordfish, and we've got some new appetizers
9:12
Speaker 10: with siir tuna that really highlights his Daniel's ability to
9:16
Speaker 10: do some sushi dishes. And I think that's what you're
9:19
Speaker 10: gonna see moving forward with us, is we got something
9:23
Speaker 10: on the horizon.
9:24
Speaker 6: Coming out and where is the restaurant located.
9:26
Speaker 10: The restaurant is located at one hundred Cantley Drive. It's
9:30
Speaker 10: people familiar with Charleston. It's right behind the Dominoes. It
9:33
Speaker 10: was formerly a Shop a Minute, and my wife and
9:36
Speaker 10: I lived in that neighborhood for a long time and
9:39
Speaker 10: it was always one of our dreams to do a restaurant.
9:42
Speaker 10: So we got some partners on board, we got the building.
9:45
Speaker 10: It was like I said, it was a Shop a Minute.
9:49
Speaker 10: The building sat empty for five years, and we thought
9:52
Speaker 10: this is a perfect place to build a neighborhood pub
9:55
Speaker 10: for the community up in Ford Hill and South Hills.
9:58
Speaker 9: So that's what we did.
10:01
Speaker 5: Talk about the importance of Restaurant Week. I mean, this
10:03
Speaker 5: thing was started and I've had a couple of other
10:05
Speaker 5: folks on. I had Stephen Keith, the food guy you
10:07
Speaker 5: know from the Gazette mail on last week. And Restaurant
10:09
Speaker 5: Week actually came out of the water crisis.
10:11
Speaker 6: Uh.
10:12
Speaker 5: And then you know, just to kind of get people
10:14
Speaker 5: back in restaurants. And then we suffered a lot with COVID,
10:18
Speaker 5: as you well know. You talked about how you open
10:20
Speaker 5: up your place the year before COVID pretty bad timing,
10:23
Speaker 5: uh uh. And uh, and now people are coming out
10:26
Speaker 5: of it. And this winter, and I've talked about this
10:29
Speaker 5: throughout the week, Jay with restaurant Week. This winter has
10:32
Speaker 5: been particularly brutal the first three or three weeks or
10:34
Speaker 5: so of January, and restaurants had to close, their employees
10:37
Speaker 5: couldn't get there, things of that nature. Talk about the
10:40
Speaker 5: importance of supporting local businesses, local restaurants like yours, not
10:45
Speaker 5: just during Restaurant Week the year round.
10:47
Speaker 10: Yeah, Restaurant Week is to me a brilliant concept, not
10:51
Speaker 10: not only for the restaurant tours, but this community in general.
10:57
Speaker 10: The you know, it's an opportunity to highlight some of
11:02
Speaker 10: your more popular dishes and add some specials into it,
11:06
Speaker 10: and the customers are getting a lot of food at
11:09
Speaker 10: a discount of price, so it's a win win for everybody.
11:14
Speaker 10: The timing couldn't have been more perfect for us, because,
11:17
Speaker 10: like I said, Chef Daniel Days is new with us
11:20
Speaker 10: and it was an opportunity for us to highlight him.
11:24
Speaker 10: But it's super popular, the community loves it. I think
11:30
Speaker 10: everybody's winning with Restaurant Weeks. So I'm really glad to
11:35
Speaker 10: be a participant in that concept.
11:38
Speaker 5: What's your personal favorite thing on the menu. I know
11:40
Speaker 5: it's all good, but what's your personal favorite, what's your
11:43
Speaker 5: go to on the menu?
11:44
Speaker 10: There's a there's a menu item called the Darling Rabbi
11:48
Speaker 10: and it's actually named after my father who has passed away.
11:54
Speaker 10: Everybody called my dad ling. He was the one of
11:57
Speaker 10: fifteen kids and he was the youngest and his older
12:02
Speaker 10: sister named him would always call him darling, so they
12:07
Speaker 10: called them ling.
12:08
Speaker 9: But so is when Filipinos came to America's.
12:13
Speaker 10: Steak is a the top of the food chain in
12:17
Speaker 10: the Philippines as well.
12:19
Speaker 9: Yes, so rebby is their favorite. My dad created a Rebbie.
12:24
Speaker 10: And put a little Filipino influence in it in the ingredients,
12:29
Speaker 10: and so that's the steak we grew up.
12:32
Speaker 9: It was a special.
12:33
Speaker 10: We got it once a month and that was a
12:36
Speaker 10: big cooking day in our household.
12:38
Speaker 9: And so we added it to.
12:40
Speaker 10: Our menu, and Daniel's done a phenomenal job implementing.
12:44
Speaker 6: And to our what's your normal hours for the restaurant?
12:48
Speaker 10: So we when COVID hit, we start we quit opening
12:53
Speaker 10: them for lunch. We were open for lunch for a
12:55
Speaker 10: long time. So right now Monday, we're closed. On Tuesdays,
12:58
Speaker 10: Monday through Friday. We are ford at nine ten o'clock
13:03
Speaker 10: on Fridays and then we're ten to ten on Saturday
13:06
Speaker 10: and Sundays because we're open for brunch.
13:10
Speaker 6: And I've heard really good things about your brunch.
13:13
Speaker 10: Yeah, so brunch is one of the more popular busier
13:17
Speaker 10: shifts for Barcadas. We pride ourselves on our brunch and
13:22
Speaker 10: it's a you know, Daniel tries to do one or
13:26
Speaker 10: two new specials each week.
13:28
Speaker 3: We do a.
13:29
Speaker 9: Bloody Mary board. It's a concept that we picked up.
13:32
Speaker 10: My sister and friends went to Pittsburgh and it was
13:36
Speaker 10: a build your own Bloody Mary bar, and so we
13:39
Speaker 10: brought that concept down and it's really popular.
13:42
Speaker 5: Here at a text here and I'm presuming this is
13:44
Speaker 5: aimed at us as all hail the local Moco. Yeah,
13:48
Speaker 5: so from a text from one of our listenership, what's
13:50
Speaker 5: a local moco?
13:51
Speaker 9: A loco moco is rice.
13:54
Speaker 10: It's two beef patties over with gravy and mushrooms over
13:59
Speaker 10: top of it.
14:00
Speaker 6: You had me at gravy and mushrooms.
14:01
Speaker 5: I'm uh, I mean all right, So if people are
14:04
Speaker 5: planning on going out to your place, Jay four restaurant,
14:07
Speaker 5: we do they need to make a reservation.
14:08
Speaker 9: Yes, reservations are right.
14:10
Speaker 10: We like we were full on Monday and I think
14:15
Speaker 10: were full today. But yeah, absolutely, now you we do
14:18
Speaker 10: walk ins at the bar. Yeah, but yes, I recommend.
14:23
Speaker 6: Well they just need to call you, I guess for
14:25
Speaker 6: a reservation.
14:25
Speaker 10: Or yes, and and and also yeah and also if
14:31
Speaker 10: if there I can't get in, we do deliver the
14:35
Speaker 10: restaurant week meal.
14:36
Speaker 5: Okay, home, that's pretty cool. Well, we as to the best.
14:39
Speaker 5: I'm looking forward to, uh to to to trying it.
14:42
Speaker 5: It's I've never been there, so it's gonna gonna have
14:45
Speaker 5: to be high on my list of places to go
14:46
Speaker 5: here really soon come up.
14:48
Speaker 10: Absolutely, I appreciate it your time giving me time on
14:52
Speaker 10: the air with.
14:52
Speaker 5: You and get out and support these local restaurants. And
14:54
Speaker 5: I've got a graphic on my social media and Dave
14:56
Speaker 5: Island Radio that has all of the restaurants are participating
14:59
Speaker 5: because and we'll let you go with this, Charleston is
15:02
Speaker 5: really getting to be a destination for foodies like myself
15:05
Speaker 5: and you.
15:06
Speaker 9: J Yeah, I absolutely believe.
15:09
Speaker 10: You know, I've always said this, Charleston has kind of
15:12
Speaker 10: an Ashville feel, but you know, truthfully, Charleston is a
15:15
Speaker 10: much more beautiful town. But I think if we can
15:19
Speaker 10: get more food restaurants as well as some more microbreweries here,
15:26
Speaker 10: I think it's just got a phenomenal vibe, particularly in
15:29
Speaker 10: the summer in Charleston.
15:31
Speaker 5: All right, Jay Senko Bricadas, I appreciate you being here, man,
15:34
Speaker 5: Thanks a lot.
15:34
Speaker 9: Best of luck with everything. Thank you so much.

Speaker 6: They said the.
18:51
Speaker 5: Top three things they found here were number three the
18:53
Speaker 5: food they love the Pepperoni rolls, and Tutors, biscuits specifically
18:57
Speaker 5: the Mountaineer and biscuits, and grave you number two of
18:59
Speaker 5: the views and on our people, they said, expect us back.
19:02
Speaker 13: Yeah.
19:02
Speaker 5: I have actually haven't followed him greatly, but a lot
19:05
Speaker 5: of people have showed me their videos when they went
19:07
Speaker 5: to Tutors. I think it was in Summersville. It's absolutely hilarious.
19:10
Speaker 5: So if you get an opportunity, you may want to
19:12
Speaker 5: check that out. Brian Dayton coming up a little bit
19:14
Speaker 5: later on from the State Chamber of Commerce. This gentleman
19:17
Speaker 5: has already announced, in fact he did some time ago,
19:19
Speaker 5: that he'd be challenging for the Republican nomination for West
19:22
Speaker 5: Virginia's Senate, the seat currently held US under Shelley Moore Capito.
19:26
Speaker 5: In the year twenty twenty six next year. His name
19:30
Speaker 5: is Alexander Gossrude and he joins us now in studio.
19:33
Speaker 6: Good morning, sir, how are you.
19:34
Speaker 2: Good morning, Dave.
19:35
Speaker 3: How are you today?
19:35
Speaker 5: I would imagine I'm doing fine. Other than a cold.
19:38
Speaker 5: I would imagine that with all this traveling you've done,
19:41
Speaker 5: you've been able to sample different foods around instead at
19:43
Speaker 5: West Virginia.
19:44
Speaker 6: Yeah, I have.
19:45
Speaker 14: We started in Berkeley County Monday, then we went to
19:48
Speaker 14: Hampshire County. Then we went to Morgan County, so we
19:50
Speaker 14: were in the Greater Eastern Panhandle. Yesterday we went to
19:53
Speaker 14: beautiful Summers County. I'd never really been to Summers County before.
19:57
Speaker 6: In beautiful area, beautiful down by the river, Hinton especially.
20:02
Speaker 2: Yeah.
20:02
Speaker 14: So, and then we're here in Charleston all day as well.
20:04
Speaker 14: So we've been very busy on the campaign trail early
20:07
Speaker 14: on here.
20:07
Speaker 5: I actually ran into you and your family this past
20:09
Speaker 5: weekend at the West Virginia Hunting and Fishing Show at
20:12
Speaker 5: the at the Coliseum and Convincement cent Are you outdoors
20:15
Speaker 5: type person?
20:16
Speaker 6: Is that your thing?
20:17
Speaker 15: Well?
20:18
Speaker 3: I grew up in Randolph County, Okay, so.
20:20
Speaker 14: You can stop right there Randolf County of course, yeah, yeah,
20:22
Speaker 14: definitely love the outdoors like most Native West Virginians do.
20:25
Speaker 14: It was great to connect with Chris Lawrence there, got
20:28
Speaker 14: a couple signed pictures from him for the kids and
20:31
Speaker 14: saw a beautiful bald eagle that was great to see
20:34
Speaker 14: as well. So yeah, great, great connecting with people there
20:36
Speaker 14: at that at that event.
20:37
Speaker 6: So why do you want to do this, why do
20:39
Speaker 6: you want to run for US Centate?
20:40
Speaker 14: Well, I think we need to bring virtue back into politics.
20:43
Speaker 14: I think a lot of our politicians today are lack virtue.
20:46
Speaker 14: But mainly I want to go fight for the American
20:48
Speaker 14: people and fight for West Virginians. And we're in a
20:50
Speaker 14: situation in this state where we have some pretty abysmal outcomes.
20:53
Speaker 14: We're fifty first in education, we have the highest drug
20:56
Speaker 14: overdose tests per capita. We're a state defined by general,
21:00
Speaker 14: rational poverty and cyclical abuse. So I want to be
21:04
Speaker 14: a voice, a new voice of service for West Virginia.
21:06
Speaker 14: We need a generational change. We're one of the oldest, sickest,
21:09
Speaker 14: poorest states in the country, and I think sending the
21:12
Speaker 14: youngest United States Senator in the country to go represent
21:16
Speaker 14: our people is going to be paramount to keeping bringing
21:19
Speaker 14: the state up to level it needs to be in
21:20
Speaker 14: the twenty first century.
21:21
Speaker 6: How old are you if you don't thirty two thirty two,
21:23
Speaker 6: so you'd be the youngest.
21:24
Speaker 3: I would be the youngest senator elected in the current
21:27
Speaker 3: US Senate.
21:27
Speaker 6: Yes, give us some of your background.
21:30
Speaker 2: Yeah.
21:30
Speaker 14: So I ran for West Virginia second Congressional District. We
21:33
Speaker 14: did very well in that race. We were able to
21:35
Speaker 14: win a lot of hearts and minds, and I got
21:38
Speaker 14: a degree in political science in college.
21:39
Speaker 3: I was on my debate team.
21:40
Speaker 14: I started a Young Republican club during the two thousand
21:42
Speaker 14: and eight election cycle. We had sixty members that did
21:44
Speaker 14: various Canada canvassing activities. We learned what it was to
21:47
Speaker 14: be a Republican, what it is to be a conservative.
21:50
Speaker 14: We debated the Young Democrats. So I've been in.
21:53
Speaker 3: The political arena anyway, at least in private, for a
21:57
Speaker 3: long time.
21:58
Speaker 14: And I decided, with where the country was heading in
22:00
Speaker 14: twenty twenty four that this was really our last chance
22:03
Speaker 14: to maybe save the country. And I have a skill
22:05
Speaker 14: set and ability where I needed to stand up and
22:07
Speaker 14: give West Virginians a voice and fight for them. And
22:10
Speaker 14: it worked out pretty well, and we're going to continue
22:12
Speaker 14: our political action.
22:13
Speaker 5: Talking to Alexander Gosrut again, who is a candidate for
22:16
Speaker 5: US Senate Dave aland show in five eighty Live is
22:18
Speaker 5: brought to you part by Husband's Pizza. This month at
22:21
Speaker 5: your favorite Hustans get a large at and inch pepperoni
22:23
Speaker 5: pizza and any pizza bowl twenty two to ninety nine
22:25
Speaker 5: five You're nearest Hussans for delivery, pick up or down
22:27
Speaker 5: in a Huston's Pizza dot com. When you say that
22:31
Speaker 5: you are learning or you learned, I guess what it is.
22:33
Speaker 6: To be a Republican. What is that to you? What
22:38
Speaker 6: is your definition?
22:39
Speaker 14: So today, I think I'm the only politician in the
22:42
Speaker 14: state currently that is an intellectual conservative, understands what conservatism is,
22:46
Speaker 14: understands how the nation was founded, why it was founded,
22:49
Speaker 14: the Judeo Christian values of the country.
22:52
Speaker 3: And I'm also a maga populist.
22:53
Speaker 14: So I understand what the people in this state want
22:56
Speaker 14: and what people in the country want, and I think
22:59
Speaker 14: I have an ability to articulate that and go fight
23:01
Speaker 14: for West Virginia's in a much better way. You know,
23:03
Speaker 14: conservatism is fairly simple. Some people in West Virginia, even Republicans,
23:08
Speaker 14: struggle with it at times, but it's a limit to government.
23:10
Speaker 14: I think right now, if the Founder saw the way
23:12
Speaker 14: that the federal government is, they would say, you need
23:14
Speaker 14: to come up with a new social contract. The over
23:16
Speaker 14: taxation government that continues to grow the way they do
23:19
Speaker 14: business in Washington, d C. Which continues to balloon our debt.
23:23
Speaker 14: You know, we're going to soon be at a thirty
23:24
Speaker 14: seven trillion dollar debt national security issue. We're not going
23:27
Speaker 14: to be able to pay the interest on the debt eventually,
23:29
Speaker 14: So right sizing government is a huge portion of that.
23:32
Speaker 14: I think the federal government has been allowed to grow
23:35
Speaker 14: in a tyrannical way and we need to reduce it.
23:38
Speaker 3: States rights. I'm big on states rights.
23:40
Speaker 14: You know, states can manage themselves better than what the
23:42
Speaker 14: federal government can do. I think if the Founder saw
23:44
Speaker 14: how much the federal government was doined today, they would
23:47
Speaker 14: be appalled.
23:48
Speaker 5: Talking again to Alexander Gosper, who's a Republican candidate for
23:51
Speaker 5: US and running next year, I want to ask you
23:54
Speaker 5: about something that you put on social media recently. And
23:57
Speaker 5: let me say you're a guy who pulls no punches.
24:00
Speaker 5: You say what's on your mind. Nobody ever has to
24:02
Speaker 5: wonder what does Alexander think about this?
24:04
Speaker 6: I think you pretty much put it out there.
24:07
Speaker 5: You said, and this is a quote, not one mentally
24:12
Speaker 5: ill transgender person is welcome in West Virginia, in the
24:16
Speaker 5: West Virginia Republican Party.
24:18
Speaker 6: Or the GOP. That is a direct quote. Why do
24:21
Speaker 6: you feel that way?
24:22
Speaker 14: Well, I don't think that transgenderism is something that should
24:25
Speaker 14: be normalized. I don't think it should be something that
24:28
Speaker 14: is pushed on our society. I think it's a mental illness,
24:31
Speaker 14: and I think people that are transgender need mental evaluation
24:34
Speaker 14: and need to get the help that they need.
24:37
Speaker 3: But they're not welcome.
24:38
Speaker 14: And a lot of this was a response to Josh
24:40
Speaker 14: Higginbotham starting the Log Cabin Republicans, and the log Cabin
24:44
Speaker 14: and Republicans unfortunately include transgenderism. How am I going to
24:47
Speaker 14: hold the line of Judeo Christian values? How am I
24:50
Speaker 14: going to go fight for little girls in Harrison County
24:52
Speaker 14: or anywhere else in the state when they are locker
24:54
Speaker 14: room's being invaded by biological men. If I don't say
24:57
Speaker 14: this is wrong from the beginning, it's something that needs
24:59
Speaker 14: to go away in this country. And one of my
25:02
Speaker 14: missions is to cast transgenderism to the ash heap of history.
25:05
Speaker 14: We see the data many people that go through with
25:08
Speaker 14: either chemical castration or physical surgeries later on are begging
25:13
Speaker 14: and pleading and going on the circuit to tell people
25:16
Speaker 14: not to do this.
25:18
Speaker 6: You know.
25:18
Speaker 14: So, I think transgender is something that has been normalized.
25:21
Speaker 14: It's something that is also being pushed. It's creating a
25:23
Speaker 14: great deal of confusion, and we have to hold the
25:25
Speaker 14: line on that as Conservatives's that's pretty it's pretty straightforward.
25:31
Speaker 14: It's against my belief system, and it's against most West
25:33
Speaker 14: Virginia's beliefs.
25:34
Speaker 5: Do you lump in, Alexander? Do you do you lump
25:37
Speaker 5: in the transgender with homosexuality?
25:42
Speaker 15: No?
25:42
Speaker 14: You know again, I was very careful to keyon transgiend.
25:46
Speaker 14: I was born in nineteen ninety two. I'm a tallerant person.
25:48
Speaker 14: I might disagree with a lifestyle that certain people live,
25:51
Speaker 14: but that's their right to live it. Transgenderism is something different.
25:55
Speaker 14: It's sanctioning mental illness as normalcy, and it's also something
25:59
Speaker 14: that is creating a lot of confusion. And the federal
26:01
Speaker 14: government was, you know, in the business of trying to
26:04
Speaker 14: get more transgenderism. Look look at our transgender member of Congress.
26:08
Speaker 14: It's trying to invade, you know, female locker rooms. You know,
26:10
Speaker 14: we're not going to pretend that you're uh that you know,
26:14
Speaker 14: you're a biological male when you're going to call yourself
26:16
Speaker 14: a woman.
26:17
Speaker 3: And that's that's scientific fact. It's not.
26:21
Speaker 5: You also, and I don't want to you know, you
26:25
Speaker 5: and I that's one of the things, like I said,
26:26
Speaker 5: that's one of the things I respect about you, is
26:28
Speaker 5: that we we may differ on opinions, but nobody ever
26:30
Speaker 5: has to nobody's ever going to say, well, he Alexander, Uh,
26:33
Speaker 5: we don't know what he's thinking.
26:34
Speaker 6: I don't. I don't. I don't think that's the case
26:36
Speaker 6: with you.
26:37
Speaker 7: Uh.
26:37
Speaker 5: And I'm going to very much paraphrase this because I
26:39
Speaker 5: was trying to find the quote right before the show.
26:42
Speaker 13: Uh.
26:42
Speaker 5: And if I have wrong, you jump in at any
26:44
Speaker 5: point you got an issue or it seems to people
26:47
Speaker 5: that don't have kids.
26:48
Speaker 3: No, I don't have an issue that people have kids.
26:50
Speaker 14: I don't like being lectured on pro life issues by
26:54
Speaker 14: people that haven't reproduced or adopted a child, politicians, you know.
26:59
Speaker 14: And that was a quote against Lindsay Graham. And you know,
27:03
Speaker 14: I think that it's hard for people that don't have
27:06
Speaker 14: children to fully understand the magnitude of it. Now, you
27:09
Speaker 14: can be an effective politician and not have a child.
27:12
Speaker 14: That's without a doubt. You can be one hundred percent
27:14
Speaker 14: effective at your job. You don't have to have a
27:15
Speaker 14: child to be a politician.
27:17
Speaker 3: But I'm just.
27:17
Speaker 14: Saying that I am skeptical of people that are saying
27:20
Speaker 14: they're out here, you know, fighting for children, and some
27:24
Speaker 14: people can't have children, and that's totally understandable. But it's
27:27
Speaker 14: hard to be lectured by people that have sat in office,
27:29
Speaker 14: like Lindsay Graham for so long on these issues that
27:33
Speaker 14: he hasn't been a part of.
27:34
Speaker 5: So I'm presuming you're pretty happy with the first week
27:38
Speaker 5: or so of the Trump administration.
27:39
Speaker 3: I'm extremely happy.
27:40
Speaker 14: What I'm really excited about is I was one of
27:42
Speaker 14: the first politicians in the country to go around and
27:46
Speaker 14: argue for a three part solution.
27:48
Speaker 6: One.
27:48
Speaker 14: I was arguing for the authorization of the military to
27:50
Speaker 14: go to the border to stop people just being allowed
27:53
Speaker 14: to come in here. I was also in favor of
27:56
Speaker 14: mass deportation tasks for US, And I'm so excited today
27:59
Speaker 14: that responsible government and Donald Trump has taken this issue
28:03
Speaker 14: off of the table. We now have a secure America.
28:06
Speaker 14: We were allowing people to come into our country, rape
28:08
Speaker 14: our women, and kill our police officers, and that is
28:11
Speaker 14: going to stop. And luckily Donald Trump was able to
28:14
Speaker 14: win the election. So I feel great that that fight
28:16
Speaker 14: has really been one in a lot of cases. And
28:18
Speaker 14: we still have a lot of work to do and
28:19
Speaker 14: we need to address asylum and other things. But yeah,
28:23
Speaker 14: Donald Trump's off to an amazing start in this administry.
28:26
Speaker 5: A lot of people concerned though, especially yesterday, with funding
28:31
Speaker 5: and things of that nature. Now, and I will say this,
28:34
Speaker 5: there's a lot of misinformation out there on a lot
28:38
Speaker 5: of fronts of what exactly is being curtailed and what's not.
28:41
Speaker 5: So dig into it before you make comments on social
28:44
Speaker 5: not you personally, but I mean dig into it you
28:45
Speaker 5: make comments on it.
28:46
Speaker 14: Yeah, I think everybody needs to just take a second,
28:49
Speaker 14: take a breath. And this is one of the reasons
28:52
Speaker 14: we elected Donald Trump to look at the federal government.
28:55
Speaker 14: This is nondiscretionary spending, so Medicaid, Medicare, social Security, this
29:00
Speaker 14: money is still going to flow. If you're a nonprofit
29:02
Speaker 14: out here, We're not going to be in a situation
29:04
Speaker 14: where kids aren't going to get free school lunch right now.
29:07
Speaker 14: We need to allow this government to take its time
29:10
Speaker 14: look at where we can right size the federal government.
29:12
Speaker 14: There's going to be some constitutional questions, you know, is
29:14
Speaker 14: this really a power of the executive Let's let the
29:17
Speaker 14: courts get in there and rule. It's confusing people in Washington, DC.
29:21
Speaker 14: It's creating a little bit of a panic. So I
29:23
Speaker 14: would just tell everybody now, calm down, Let's trust the process.
29:27
Speaker 14: Let's trust what Donald Trump is doing. This is only
29:29
Speaker 14: for non discretionary spending, and let's get a little bit
29:32
Speaker 14: of information before we get too apoplectic about One.
29:35
Speaker 5: Of the quotes here, and this was from a memo
29:38
Speaker 5: for the Executive Office of the President of the Office
29:40
Speaker 5: of Management of Budget said no, any program that offers
29:44
Speaker 5: direct benefits to Americans is supposedly excluded from the pause
29:48
Speaker 5: and exempted from this review process. And that's the ones
29:50
Speaker 5: that go directly to people. Because I know a lot
29:51
Speaker 5: of people are concerned about student loans and and things
29:55
Speaker 5: of that nature. As we close, what do you want
29:57
Speaker 5: people to know about Alexander Gossrid.
29:59
Speaker 14: I want people to know that I'm a generational change
30:01
Speaker 14: in West Virginia that possesses a skill set and ability
30:03
Speaker 14: to go fight for them. I'm at top mental faculty,
30:06
Speaker 14: I'm in top physical shape where I can represent them

30:10
Speaker 14: I want to serve the people. I think people in Washington,
30:14

30:16
Speaker 14: I was Shelly and I looked at the results we have,
30:18
Speaker 14: particularly here in West Virginia, I'd say, you know what,
30:21
Speaker 14: I'm not the answer anymore. Seven terms in the House,
30:23
Speaker 14: two terms in the Senate is enough. And I really
30:25
Speaker 14: want the media, whether it's you, or it's Dave Wilson
30:28
Speaker 14: and TJ. Meadows or you know, anybody in this state
30:32
Speaker 14: in the media to ask Senator Capito is she even
30:34
Speaker 14: planning on running again? Ask her what she thinks of
30:37
Speaker 14: the first time being challenged in West Virginia politics by
30:39

30:53

36:33

36:42
Speaker 6: All right? So all right?
36:43
Speaker 5: So after that, you know it's you. You know, it's
36:46
Speaker 5: kind of hard following up, Alexander goasrut.
36:48
Speaker 6: You know what I mean.
36:49
Speaker 11: It can be, but I'm up for the challenge. Let's
36:51
Speaker 11: go for it.
36:51
Speaker 5: All right, Let's talk about some things related to the
36:55
Speaker 5: Chamber of Commerce so far.
36:56
Speaker 6: I want to ask you, what about the first week
36:59
Speaker 6: or so of the Morrison administration? What do you like it?
37:01
Speaker 6: When are you not liking so far?
37:03
Speaker 2: So?
37:03
Speaker 19: What do you like it?
37:03
Speaker 10: All?
37:04
Speaker 19: Dave?
37:04
Speaker 11: We've been really, really happy, you know, his announcement last
37:07
Speaker 11: week of Todd Johnson to come in and really oversee
37:10
Speaker 11: economic development, energy policy. That was music to our ears.
37:15
Speaker 11: The other thing that really we've appreciated. We are firm
37:19
Speaker 11: believers at the Chamber that if you want to get better,
37:22
Speaker 11: you have to know where you stand.
37:23
Speaker 19: Right now.
37:24
Speaker 11: And the governor got up and he laid it out
37:26
Speaker 11: right away and said, here's where we are. We're on
37:29
Speaker 11: economic development, on education. Here are our stats. They were accurate,
37:33
Speaker 11: and we believe that's important to keep those metrics in
37:35
Speaker 11: mind because if you're going to be looking to become
37:38
Speaker 11: a top twenty five, a top twenty, hopefully a top
37:40
Speaker 11: ten state, you have to know where you rank up
37:43
Speaker 11: with other people and rank up with other states. So
37:46
Speaker 11: we are very, very excited with how the Morrisey administration
37:50
Speaker 11: has been moving forward. We've been in conversation with them
37:53
Speaker 11: about what to do to really help bring more opportunity
37:56
Speaker 11: and more growth to West Virginia.
37:58
Speaker 5: Talking to again with Brian Dayton from the Chamber of Commerce.
38:01
Speaker 5: So as we head into the session it starts here
38:03
Speaker 5: in a couple of weeks, we're looking forward to what
38:05
Speaker 5: do you hopeing to accomplish this time around?
38:07
Speaker 11: So there are a number of things. Our agenda is
38:10
Speaker 11: very broad and what I would just remind your listeners,
38:12
Speaker 11: we represent businesses across the entire state who employ over
38:17
Speaker 11: half of West Virginia's work force. So if it's an
38:20
Speaker 11: industrial sector in West Virginia, it is a part of
38:22
Speaker 11: our membership. So we are looking at things from tax
38:25
Speaker 11: to expedited permitting, workforce, childcare, improved education. We are looking
38:32
Speaker 11: at things on a number of fronts, and there are
38:35
Speaker 11: specific policies that we've promoted forward related to tax and
38:40
Speaker 11: how to go how to help especially some of our
38:42
Speaker 11: smaller businesses do better. We've also talked about where are
38:46
Speaker 11: some of the areas with legal reform. We've done a
38:48
Speaker 11: lot there, but what are some tweaks we can make
38:50
Speaker 11: to make sure that we're in line with other states
38:52
Speaker 11: and we're not having any outliers. And again, you know,
38:56
Speaker 11: you and I've talked about this a number of times
38:58
Speaker 11: when it comes to work for childcare is a major
39:02
Speaker 11: issue for a lot of West Virginia families, and we're
39:05
Speaker 11: talking about many different things to help make childcare a
39:09
Speaker 11: more available but be also more affordable for families in
39:12
Speaker 11: the state.
39:13
Speaker 5: And you know, we saw that Brian, he know we're
39:15
Speaker 5: talking with Brian Dayton from the State Chamber of Congress.
39:17
Speaker 5: We saw that with this winner that we've had with
39:20
Speaker 5: the first three weeks, when schools were closed, childcare facilities
39:23
Speaker 5: were closed, workers couldn't get there, and if the businesses
39:27
Speaker 5: were open a lot of times people had to call
39:30
Speaker 5: in sick or whatever, had to take a personal day
39:32
Speaker 5: because they had nobody to take care of their kids.
39:34
Speaker 6: And I'm not a.
39:35
Speaker 5: Proponent in saying that that that needs to be the
39:37
Speaker 5: government's responsibility.
39:39
Speaker 6: So to speak.
39:40
Speaker 5: But we got to do something to make maybe make
39:43
Speaker 5: it easier for childcare facilities. I don't know what that
39:45
Speaker 5: answer is, but we saw it in the first part
39:47
Speaker 5: of twenty twenty five. Brian, It's a real issue, Dave.
39:50
Speaker 11: You know, we've been doing a series of Workforce Unifier
39:53
Speaker 11: events through our foundation across the state where we're going
39:55
Speaker 11: out into communities and mainly listening listening to people in
39:59
Speaker 11: the communit to these just individuals, businesses, education leaders. We
40:04
Speaker 11: were at an event last month and Dave, what I
40:07
Speaker 11: heard absolutely shocked me because I hadn't appreciated this yet.
40:11
Speaker 11: We had a teacher tell us that older elementary kid,
40:14
Speaker 11: older elementary age kids were sometimes missing school to stay
40:18
Speaker 11: home and take care of their younger siblings because the
40:21
Speaker 11: parents had to go to work and there was no childcare.
40:23
Speaker 11: And my jall hit the floor. I didn't even appreciate
40:26
Speaker 11: that was going on. But we're talking fifth, sixth graders
40:29
Speaker 11: sometimes fourth graders. They're staying home to watch their younger siblings.
40:32
Speaker 11: So it's something that just you don't know until you
40:35
Speaker 11: hear that, and it just kind of makes you shocked
40:38
Speaker 11: to find that out.
40:39
Speaker 6: Unbelievable, unbelievable.
40:40
Speaker 5: I'm going to talk about tax rates for a moment.
40:43
Speaker 5: You were someone and your organization is someone who tracks
40:46
Speaker 5: a lot of data. That's what you do. Where are
40:49
Speaker 5: we on tax rates in West Virginia? Are we really low?
40:53
Speaker 5: Are we really high? We really where you need to be?
40:56
Speaker 11: So it depends on which taxes you're looking at, Dave.
41:00
Speaker 11: When it comes to our personal income tax obviously we're
41:02
Speaker 11: on a have a bill in place, it was passed
41:05
Speaker 11: a couple of years ago to continually slide us down.
41:08
Speaker 11: Right now, we are dead in the middle on our
41:10
Speaker 11: personal income tax rates. I believe it's twenty fifth in
41:13
Speaker 11: the country for the top rate, and I think twenty
41:15
Speaker 11: fourth in the country those making fifty thousand dollars, So
41:18
Speaker 11: we're middle of the pack and moving in the right direction.
41:22
Speaker 11: When it comes to residential property taxes, so your personal
41:26
Speaker 11: real estate taxes, we're about the thirteenth lowest in the country,
41:30
Speaker 11: and I think that surprises a lot of people. But
41:32
Speaker 11: when you look at other states that real estate taxes
41:35
Speaker 11: are much higher, but property taxes are classified differently, so
41:39
Speaker 11: you have real estate of agriculture, industrial, commercial. When it
41:42
Speaker 11: comes to industrial and commercial taxes, we are in the
41:47
Speaker 11: higher categories, so we're about twenty second highest when it
41:51
Speaker 11: comes to commercial property, but when it's industrial personal property taxes,
41:54
Speaker 11: we're the eleventh highest. We are also in the higher
41:58
Speaker 11: end of states on core britin net income tax. That
42:02
Speaker 11: is a very important tax if you're a business and
42:04
Speaker 11: you're looking to expand operations, move to other states. That
42:07
Speaker 11: is something you're looking at, what's my tax rate going
42:09
Speaker 11: to be? I think you and I probably remember well
42:12
Speaker 11: when it was up at nine percent and we were
42:14
Speaker 11: able to lower it down to six and a half percent.
42:16
Speaker 11: That was a big move. But even with that rate,
42:19
Speaker 11: we're still in the top half of states. So the
42:23
Speaker 11: other thing that we look at overall, when you look
42:26
Speaker 11: at the overall percentage of taxes collected and the share
42:30
Speaker 11: that lies on the business community, for example, we're the
42:33
Speaker 11: twelfth highest. So what you know, I'm careful to say
42:36
Speaker 11: is yes, when it comes to personal income we're we're
42:38
Speaker 11: right in the middle. When it comes to residential real estate,
42:40
Speaker 11: we're on the lower end. But if somebody tries to say, hey,
42:43
Speaker 11: we're a low tax state, I'm going to say, well,
42:45
Speaker 11: hold on a second, because when it comes to our businesses,
42:48
Speaker 11: and these are your small businesses, I'm including the people
42:50
Speaker 11: who are on main Street, the mom and pop stores,
42:53
Speaker 11: we collect a disproportionate share off those, so we are
42:56
Speaker 11: the twelfth highest in the country. And the overall share
42:59
Speaker 11: of taxes collected by businesses versus individuals.
43:02
Speaker 5: It's an interesting breakdown because I think what happens sometimes
43:04
Speaker 5: is people want to say, well, like you said, do
43:07
Speaker 5: we pay high tax that we pay low tax? Well,
43:09
Speaker 5: it depends. There's a lot of caveats have to be
43:11
Speaker 5: on there. Dave Alan showing five any Live is brand

43:34
Speaker 5: you on in the new year or not. Give me
43:36
Speaker 5: an overall forecast for the business community in twenty twenty five, brime.
43:40
Speaker 11: So you know, we are optimistic. That's one thing that
43:43
Speaker 11: we do a lot. We survey our membership frequently. We're
43:47
Speaker 11: asking them what's their outlook. Do they think that their
43:49
Speaker 11: business is going to grow? Do they think it's going
43:51
Speaker 11: to shrink? And for the past few years, we've seen
43:54
Speaker 11: optimism within the business community. And I also think that
43:57
Speaker 11: business people in general tend to be optimist stick individuals.
44:00
Speaker 11: They're entrepreneurs, they're looking at ways to better their communities.
44:04
Speaker 11: So we're seeing optimism from that standpoint, that to us
44:08
Speaker 11: is a good thing. We continue to closely track that.
44:10
Speaker 11: I think we have a lot of things moving in
44:12
Speaker 11: West Virginia. We're hearing rumblings of another number of economic
44:16
Speaker 11: development announcements that are still on the horizon, but moving
44:19
Speaker 11: in the right direction. So what our big message is,
44:22
Speaker 11: let's make sure that we keep doing that, that we
44:24
Speaker 11: keep doing what we can to attract more development to
44:27
Speaker 11: this state. Because at the end of the day, those
44:31
Speaker 11: of us who have children, myself, you know, I have
44:33
Speaker 11: a six year old, four year old at home. I
44:35
Speaker 11: want them to have an opportunity to stay in West
44:37
Speaker 11: Virginia when they grow up, where they go to college, military,
44:41
Speaker 11: just straight into the workforce. I want them to have
44:43
Speaker 11: that opportunity to stay here and raise their family here
44:46
Speaker 11: as I have. And I think probably most of your
44:48
Speaker 11: listeners are hoping for the same thing. But that's what
44:50
Speaker 11: it's all about.
44:50
Speaker 5: Are you and your organization and other chambers of commerce,
44:54
Speaker 5: are you concerned about what's going on in Washington right
44:57
Speaker 5: now with funding and things of that nature and things
44:58
