- Gabriela: I just wanted to say about the teens that I love how they're written as like someone who's part of their generation. I think the writers do a good job of writing Gen Z like humor and language or lingo, which is hard to do because I've seen other shows that try to do that and it's just, they try too hard and it doesn't work. But this show, they do it very well, Mel: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Mel, Carol, and Gabriela, join me tonight to discuss Best Medicine, Season 2, Episode 3, Crate Expectations. Doug is off this week, but we'll have him back. So come through and welcome back to Podcast Portwenn. And it's karaoke night. I clicked record on the first try, so this is good. so let's talk karaoke. What did we think of Eden and her singing? Who wants to take that? Carol Doehler: Well, I kinda now want to see the whole rendition. Chesla Wechsler: Ha ha ha choo choo. Carol Doehler: I mean yeah. And I loved Mark when he got just so got into it. He's just game for just about anything, I think. Chesla Wechsler: Agree. He's very sweet. I I have come full circle on Mark. How about you, Gabriela,? Gabriela: I loved it. I thought it was really funny. I think Eden as a character just cracks me up in general. And yeah, her singing, it kind of gave me like secondhand embarrassment, I bared through it. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Sort of the cringe. Gabriela: Yeah. But it's okay. Chesla Wechsler: You two Mel? Mel: Yeah, I have a hard time with the cringe humor. I have a hard time watching that. So I said I was going to be watching it like this through my fingers. I didn't end up doing that, mainly probably because I saw clip of part of it ahead of time. yeah, that cringe humor, I always have a hard time with. A lot of times I'll either not watch something with that or fast forward through it, but I stuck it out. It was worth it. Chesla Wechsler: No. Now now sh is that? Is it Eliza Coop? Is that her name? Gabriela: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Do you think that was her voice? Gabriela: No. Chesla Wechsler: No. But I think Josh Segara and Abigail Spencer sing their parts, right? Gabriela: They do, yeah. Carol Doehler: Yeah, from what I've heard they do, yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Okay. Yeah. Mel: do they? was wondering. Okay. Gabriela: All Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. That was fun. And and I don't know about you guys, but I was thinking it was the Mary Hart effect because there was something I think it was back in the nineties maybe where when Mary Hart, who was on one of the morning shows, would speak, there was someone who was actually having seizures because of the sound of her voice. And I thought, my gosh, they've they've found this interesting old case and that's what's going on with Lorenzo but nope, it was the carotid. Mel: I thought it was something like that too, like it was the pitch of her voice that was causing him to do it. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. How about you, Gabriela,? Gabriela: I don't know what I thought. just, I didn't, I don't think it was because of her voice, like when I first saw it, but it could have been. It's always like something else when it's on this show. It's never like the obvious choice. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: Yeah Gabriela: But yeah, it was interesting what it actually turned out to be in the end though. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela, you were talking about I think it was you, or maybe it was you, Carol, about how the song's now like an earworm and you had to listen to the whole Carol Doehler: Yeah, yeah, I had to listen to the Andrews sisters. I think that's who sang that. I had to listen to that to get that into my head instead of her grinding trying to Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Carol Doehler: sing that song. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. What did I dunno about you guys, but when she when Lorenzo was leaving the surgery and the teens were outside and the dog Carol Doehler: That yeah, that was so funny. Chesla Wechsler: Wanna does Mel: Yeah. It was perfect. I mean, the timing of it was just great, where the teens, just all three of them fell at the same time and then, then Copernicus is lying on his, on Gabriela: Okay. Mel: his back. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. That was the only time we saw the teens in the whole episode. Mel: It was and that's been the way that's been with them. I think most last season too. There was I think one of the episodes seven I think it was they had a bigger part but a lot of times you just see them walk past and then just make a comment or do something that is just hysterically funny. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Carol Doehler: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: It was so well timed and so well done. know, that's all we needed them for. Yeah. Gabriela: You Mel: Yeah. Gabriela: I just wanted to say about the teens that I love how they're written as like someone who's part of their generation. I think the writers do a good job of writing Gen Z like humor and language or lingo, which is hard to do because I've seen other shows that try to do that and it's just, they try too hard and it doesn't work. But this show, they do it very well, so. Mel: Yeah. Okay. Chesla Wechsler: good. I'm sure that's a demographic that a show would like to capture too, right? So if it's actually being done well, there's a good chance of that. One thing that I noticed online is so many people who are either like having their sort of T V debut or maybe they've been in a couple of roles and they're so excited to be on this show. And they're posting stuff on on social media about like, you know, this episode, this is the one I'm in. And I think that that's refreshing. Carol Doehler: yeah, and it reaches even more people. Gabriela: Yes. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. I mean we had I think Brandon Gilpin. He was Blake. He was one of the three guys who tested positive for the testicular cancer. Malachi Nimmons was Lorenzo, so he was all excited about making his debut and It's just it's Gabriela: Thanks. Chesla Wechsler: just been fun to see these people so excited to be on the show. Gabriela: Yeah, I've enjoyed that too. Chesla Wechsler: Anybody else have Carol Doehler: Well, I'm just kinda curious. You know, they say that teasing was the way the town was saying, Hey Martin, we're accepting you. Are they doing a little bit of teasing to Eden? Chesla Wechsler: That's a good question. Mel, what do you think? Mel: Yeah, it's funny, Carol and I are kind of on the same brain wave right now, because I was going to bring that up. To me, you know, I don't have a good question to that, because really I hadn't thought about it from that point, Carol. I was just kind of thinking of them as being kind of mean to her. and just kind of giving her a hard time. I mean, I think they recognize that she's trying a little bit too hard, but she's also not really doing a lot to ingratiate herself. Like she was making a noise complaint in Port Wenn on a Saturday night Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: for like the one thing that was going on in town. And then she gets there and realizes it's karaoke. And really the only reason why she even sang is because she saw Louisa and the interaction with Martin. So, I mean, I do think... I think they saw a little bit of her vulnerability and they picked up on it and they pushed it. And they did that last year with Martin too. And I think that's where I think it becomes kind of mean-spirited and where it comes from a place of kind of being like, you're not one of us and you don't belong here. And I actually was really glad to see that Martin had her back. I mean, even if he doesn't Gabriela: . Mel: love her, he at least has enough respect for her to say, hey, this is not right. Don't do this to somebody that I care about. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And y on online on one of the comments from from last week, HeyJude1963 brought up the fact that the prank is like was second nature to the townspeople. So like this whole teasing thing is second nature to them. But then they really aren't that welcoming to Eden because I mean they clearly hated her singing. They didn't tell her that there was another Gabriela: So, thank Chesla Wechsler: karaoke night, right? And you can you can tell they don't like her. What do you think, Gabi? Gabriela: Yeah, I think I think there's like a difference between their prank with Martin and their teasing with Luke with the Eden this last episode I don't know you could just tell the vibe is like with Martin it's like camaraderie it's like a fun joking thing versus with Eden it's like We all know that they don't... They're not the fondest of her and the teasing comes off a little bit more mean. But Chesla Wechsler: Mm. Gabriela: I do like that Marin stood up for her. I think because he knows how that feels to be laughed at and Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: teased like that throughout his life. So that was nice. But when he called her my girlfriend, I was like, no thanks. But other than Carol Doehler: Ha Gabriela: that, it was nice. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. He didn't even seem to like the taste of that word, did he? Gabriela: Every time they call each other Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: something, I'm just... it doesn't feel right. Chesla Wechsler: Awkward. I know. But I I I agree, I liked when he defended her. I thought that was good. And he also, of course, pointed out before they even went that she hadn't really they hadn't warmed up to her and she hadn't really been making that much of an effort on her end of things. So he's r he's realistic, I think. No. Mel: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: You know, one thing about that was once again, who comes to the rescue of the displaced person in town? It's Greg and George. Like they are just the social fabric of that town. You know, Greg's like, come on Eden and George gets the chant going on, Eden, Eden, Eden. So, you could say maybe that's their business. They're at the bar, the Salty Breeze, but it just seems to be their personality too. Carol Doehler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: Okay. Chesla Wechsler: Although last week they were not thrilled at their competition, right? Carol Doehler: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: I hope we see her back. Gabriela: We will. Carol Doehler: Yeah, hopefully. Mel: Mm hmm. Chesla Wechsler: You think? I hope. you you're killing me. You're spoiling me. Gabriela: I know. Carol Doehler: Tease She's a she's just teasing us. Gabriela: It's not a spoiler. Chesla Wechsler: True. It's it's a factoid. So now now I know something I didn't want to know. Gabriela: in Chesla Wechsler: You know, with with respect to the teasing, let's see, I think we had another comment, is it An Amis? Amis1887? I think she pointed out that Martin's parents teased them, right? Implying that it was Martin and Rosemary, so it was something that started before Rosemary died. So maybe that's some sort of a seed that's getting planted for a later episode, for all we know. What did you think of Eden in general in this episode? Carol Doehler: She's for some reason she I'm kind of warming up to her a little bit. She plays that role so well that, you know, you believe that she is Eden. And Gabriela: you Carol Doehler: just with her red lights and her gold face mask thingy she had going on, it's like, what are you like, C3PO or what's going on here? Chesla Wechsler: Did you did you develop a theory at all about the the red light blanket? Carol Doehler: Well, you can get it on Amazon for it's over a grand. It's like sixteen hundred bucks. But it's isn't Mel: Wow. Thank you. Carol Doehler: it supposed to do something to help regenerate skin cells or do something? Fine lines and whatever else it's supposed to Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, you would think Carol Doehler: do. Mel: Yeah. So. Chesla Wechsler: you would think if you want it to affect your skin you would not have your clothes on. Gab Gabriela,, you had said something last week. You think it's just a sign of like her awkwardness? Carol Doehler: Exactly. That was my thought as well. Gabriela: I don't know, I think it's just like her quirk. I think we can tell she's kind of like a high maintenance kind of person, which is like, there's nothing wrong with that. But I don't know, it's just like a part of her character, like the face mask and the red light and like having someone take her luggage up to the room or something. Like she's just like a high maintenance girl and... I don't know. I think it's just a part of her. like it. It's... yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Carol Doehler: Entitled Chesla Wechsler: Th that's the word that I had with the luggage. That drove me nuts. Gabriela: Thank Carol Doehler: Ha ha Chesla Wechsler: But you know what? from what I understand, we'd be surprised but when she was a kid, she was not fun and had few friends. Carol Doehler: Very Martin. I mean, that's how they relate. Gabriela: I think that's why her and Martin got along. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I just I love how she said it though. Mel: It. Chesla Wechsler: It's like you'd be surprised and I'm like, Pfft, girlfriend, nobody's surprised. I thought it was interesting a I wanna get your guy's point on this. She was willing to sing to see if that's what was causing Lorenzo to faint. Now do you think she was doing that 'cause she just wanted to finish the song, or was it because she was an open minded medical professional and maybe it was her singing? Gabriela: I think she wanted to prove that it wasn't her singing. And then her excuse was like, you're in the presence of two high class doctors. You don't need to worry about anything if something were to happen. Chesla Wechsler: True. Yeah. Gabriela: But yeah, I think she was just trying to prove that it wasn't her voice. Chesla Wechsler: I could buy that. Carol Doehler: Yeah, I agree. She she just wanted to prove that he had something other than her singing that caused his partial demise. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. I love what did Lorenzo say? It was like know, I d I don't want to die so you can you can make your girlfriend happy or something like that. Carol Doehler: Yeah. Gabriela: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: There was a real collection of great lines in this one. I am I just think they're hitting it out of the park with season two so far. Carol Doehler: Yeah, what was one crate Marty or something? Mel: So. Gabriela: Marty One Crate. Chesla Wechsler: great. Is that what it was? Carol Doehler: Great, yeah, I think that is it. Chesla Wechsler: You know, I was wondering, Aunt Sarah coached Martin when he was a kid and he didn't do well and it was a horrible experience. In this one she coaches Peter Cronk and then Peter Cronk actually coaches Martin. And and I was wondering if it was sort of like a almost like in math, like a a it's transitivity. Aunt Sarah coaches Peter, Peter coaches Martin, so in essence Aunt Sarah has now kind of coached Martin and this time it was successful. Gabriela: I don't think she encouraged him Chesla Wechsler: Am I taking that too far? Gabriela: as a kid. I think she kind of like forced him to just do it. And then that's why he was like so unprepared and scared and why that happened. Chesla Wechsler: Okay. Gabriela: And then I think Peter was kind of like her second chance. And because Peter is so like Martin. And so I think he reminds Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: her of a young Martin. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: that's what I got from it, Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, I could buy that. What do you think of these these prevaricating, fraudulent Best family people? I mean, here's Sarah and she's fixing the crates so that nobody breaks her record, and then Martin lied in front of everybody that he hadn't wet himself. Mel: So. Okay. Carol Doehler: Yeah, that it's like maybe the apple didn't fall too far from the tree between Aunt Sarah and Martin. Chesla Wechsler: She was a big influence on him as a kid, maybe not always for good, huh? Carol Doehler: Exactly. Gabriela: I think with Martin it's more of an embarrassment thing. Chesla Wechsler: Good day. Yeah. Yeah. I'm sure that yeah. Gabriela: I mean, in front of a bunch of kids and then Louisa. I don't think anyone would want to admit that they wet themselves. But Chesla Wechsler: No. Mel: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: yeah, I don't know. Chesla Wechsler: I I agree on that. But still I was kind of like Martin, bad example. You're setting a bad example. Of course if nobody else finds out about it, I guess it won't be a bad example, right? Gabriela: I thought his, parallel, there was a parallel between him wetting himself as a kid and last season, Peter Cronk also said he wet himself when he was scared. In the Chesla Wechsler: Mm. Gabriela: blood, the, might be blood episode. So was like, those two are just Chesla Wechsler: Okay. Gabriela: like, they're so similar. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. And when Peter does so well, who does he go to hug? Gabriela: Aunt Sarah. Carol Doehler: Yep, Aunt Sarah. Blew right by Martin. Mel: Yep. Sarah. Chesla Wechsler: Hm? Yep. You reap what you sow. Gabriela: Mm-hmm. Carol Doehler: Exactly. Chesla Wechsler: You shut me down, you exclude me. I'm gonna change my loyalties. How about Gabriela: Yeah, I felt so bad then. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, for Martin? Gabriela: Yeah, for both of them. I don't know. I just think Martin's like finally like warming up to him and he's just like there's now like this distance because Eden doesn't want him around. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Eden could win this whole thing if she could warm up. Gabriela: Yeah, exactly. She could easily win the town over, but. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And she could win Martin over. Yeah. Does she have it in her? Carol Doehler: No. Chesla Wechsler: He Carol Doehler: As much as I love the character, it's like, you know, something needs to change. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I don't know how you guys felt, but when Louisa and Mark both had a date in the other town, I was kinda hoping that since they potentially had done it online, that maybe they matched each other. Mel: I never thought of that. That would have been funny. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, 'cause it yeah. And the thing is like we we didn't know that they had seen photos of the other person until they got there. Right? So 'cause that's when Mark is describing the old guy standing on the porch like is is that him? And we didn't didn't know that they'd seen pictures ahead of that. But I thought that would have been interesting because it would have said, hey, they really are kind of matched well. Mel: was surprised to see that Louisa was actually dating. I mean, and then I started thinking about that episode with Mark where she was like, I don't want to date. And it's like, well, okay, are you saying you don't want to date or you didn't want to date him? And I'm honestly surprised too, given, mean, and obviously when she told this guy, I'm trying to have a baby by myself and his reaction was understandable. To me, the two don't really mesh of like trying to start a relationship at the same time that you're trying to have a baby by yourself. That's a lot. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. No, I'd I agree. And frankly, I had a little bit of a hard time with her when she said Now you made me be mean or something like that. Because did you 'cause to me it's like nobody Mel: Yeah, me too, me too. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: makes somebody be mean. You you could have said Mel: Right. Chesla Wechsler: Now I've said something mean. Mel: Right. it's like, well, why is, I mean, his, you why, like, I found it telling that her, you know, everybody says, Louise is so kind. She's so nice. Even even Martin's mother was like, you're very kind. But yet there's a certain point where if you say something to her, do something like this mean comes out. Which Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: I thought was interesting. Chesla Wechsler: And also I mean, it's all judgmental to be like, you know, two failed marriages before the age of Mel: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: forty from somebody who just dumped her fiance after living with him for eight years. Gabi, what do you think? Gabriela: I'm a number one Louisa defender, so I disagree, but I Chesla Wechsler: good, go for it. Gabriela: don't know. I don't think I think what the I don't even know what the guy's name is, but I think what he said was pretty rude. don't know. Just the way he delivered it was rude. And so her comeback was like valid. I don't know. I was rooting. Chesla Wechsler: What did he say, do you remember? Gabriela: She said something about her trying to get pregnant and then trying to date at the same time. But he said it. I don't remember what he said exactly. But her like comeback, I was like rooting for Chesla Wechsler: Ha ha. Gabriela: I don't think she's a mean person or like she has moments that are mean. She is a kind person and so, I don't know. I think I'm biased, but I was fine with that. Chesla Wechsler: think in the heat of a moment you can come out with something mean. I absolutely buy that. The thing that bothered me was the now you made me be mean. That's the part that I objected to. You know, you you did this to me. And I don't know, I'm just so big on accountability. What do you think, Carol? Mel: Yeah. Carol Doehler: Well, there's I think some people and I know one that is genuinely nice and is very kind and generous, but they can only go to a point and once they reach that point, that's it. Then that's when the mean comes out. So that could be with her. You know, you just push that that or things just add up and it just takes that one person to say that one thing that just sends them over. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mel: I think she's also very, you know, as we saw last episode when she had that Meltdown at the shot. think this is a bit of a touchy subject with her as well. Chesla Wechsler: Mm. Mel: Part of me thinks that she's doing it now because she feels like she's running out of time. But I think her preference would have been to have been in a relationship with, which I think is also why she's dating, because of the timing of that is a little odd. So I think his comment and his reaction kind of just hit a nerve with her because she's already feeling like, yeah, you know, I want a relationship and I want to have a baby, but I'm running out of time to have a baby, so I better prioritize that. Chesla Wechsler: Mm. Carol Doehler: Maybe she's hormonal 'cause when you go through all that stuff, I think that throws things out of whack. Gabriela: . Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I I'm fine with with her saying something mean. Like not that I think it's nice, right? But it it's understandable. I just get stuck with the you made me do it. Like like if the roles were reversed and he was saying something to her like, you made me do it Mel: Mm-hmm. Carol Doehler: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: on anything, you know, I don't think we would be defending him necessarily. Gabriela: You You Chesla Wechsler: But what do you think? IVF. It's certainly an icebreaker. Carol Doehler: Yeah. That's quite the conversation with somebody you don't even know that you just met. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: I did think that conversation would be, usually the do you want to have kids is not, I mean, I don't know, maybe things have changed, but usually the, you, do you want to have kids? It's usually not a first date topic. And the only thing I was thinking is, you both of them are kind of in a place in their life where they just don't have the time and energy to kind of waste anymore. So Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: it's like, might as well just get it out in the open. That's what I was thinking, but I was like, wow, this conversation got real, real fast. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. And I think you're right, in the sense of like, maybe that was a deal breaker in all of the other people that they've tried dating and it was like, let's just but you know, you almost feel like you'd you'd ask that online before you met in another town if you thought that was important. Gabriela: Okay. Okay. Mel: And you can, I mean, I think some online platforms, you can also make that selection of like, Chesla Wechsler: Check. Yeah. Mel: yeah, of like how interested you are in, you know, so that they match you with, you know, the correct people. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Okay, what what else can we talk about with respect to Louisa? Mel: The hug. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, that was quite a hug. Mel: Mm-hmm. When Martin won the crate race, she ran out of the crowd to hug him, like as if she was his girlfriend. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: And, you know, Eden wasn't there because it was, presume it was because it was a weekday and she had gone back to Boston. But yeah, I mean, how she ran out of crowd and ran right to him, was like she was his girlfriend. But, and then we've talked about this before, it's also, you know, he hugs her, but he doesn't hug anybody else. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: Which I thought was also going back to the Peter thing. I thought it was interesting that he had actually had his arms open ready to hug Peter. then Peter just ran right past him. And that was the only person I think I've ever seen him like actually ask for a hug from. I don't even know if he's ever even asked for a hug from Louisa. He just will hug her back when she hugs him. Chesla Wechsler: That would be interesting to go look back at to see if he actually what do you think, Ga Gabriela,, did you see him like actually seem to like come in, pull her in kind of thing Gabriela: I think in season one from like the hugs that we saw, it is mainly Louisa initiating it he just like accepts that and embraces her back. And then with everyone else it's just like stiff arms straight down. Even with Aunt Sarah in this episode, like right after the Louisa hug. on Sarah went to hug him and he was just like, he didn't really hug her back. He kind of just like leans into her. But yeah, I don't think Chesla Wechsler: Okay. Gabriela: he's ever asked for a hug. But I think now it's more of like a mutual thing. Like they can just kind of like tell that they're gonna hug and now they just, it's like a same time thing versus before it was Louisa initiating it. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Okay. You know, I I'm rooting for Louisa. It may not sound like I am, but I am rooting for her. At the same time, I think I would ha be happy if she ended up with Mark. Gabriela: I think I like... Chesla Wechsler: I mean I know it's not likely, but Gabriela: Yeah, I think I like... Mark and Louisa as friends, just like I like Eden and Martin as friends. I don't think they work as a couple. I mean, obviously they didn't work out before. I think, I don't know, I get the sense that... She kind of just went back to him because he was what was comfortable to her. But there was obviously something missing that I think they're probably two alike in some ways. Kind of sunshine and sunshine. And that can get a little bit... Mel: Okay. So Gabriela: I don't know. It's hard to explain, but they're just like too alike, I think. They work better as friends. Chesla Wechsler: Okay. I I can see that. Gabriela: I don't think Mark challenges her in any way. Like Eden to Martin doesn't cause her to grow as a person. And so they're just not well matched in a romantic way. Mel: I Chesla Wechsler: Okay. I could see that. I could buy that. Good to see Peter Cronk back. Mel: the importance of of the importance of of of of Carol Doehler: I I really like him. And that interaction between he and Aunt Sarah was really super sweet. How he talked her into being his coach and then her fixing the crates in the dark, you know, so they weren't rigged so he could have a chance at beating her record and Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah, I liked that. Carol Doehler: Yeah. And once again where is his mother? Probably working. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yeah. Speaking of mothers, Carol Doehler: There's Gabriela: . Chesla Wechsler: were you thrilled when Elaine's mom came? I teared Carol Doehler: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: up. Mel: I did too. Carol Doehler: Yeah, do you get the feeling that they're in the same town or did they move off somewhere else? Chesla Wechsler: Good question, I don't know. Mel: mean. When they were talking last season, got the sense, I mean, unless that's part of, I get the sense that Port Wenn is a very small town in a that we've pretty much seen all of it, but when they were talking last season, it seemed like she was in like a town square or somewhere else. So Gabriela: So. Mel: I have a feeling her mother may already live in a different town. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: They never really specified, I think we were meant to think that was Port Wenn, but they've never shown it again. Carol Doehler: Right. Yeah, Chesla Wechsler: Okay. Carol Doehler: 'cause she runs a gift shop or something, right? Mel: Mm-hmm. Carol Doehler: And then the principal, you know, what's his n dum dum, Chesla Wechsler: Dum dum. Mel: I'm dumb. Carol Doehler: he's he's offs going after different opportunities after he left the school. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. I I really thought Elaine, just from the standpoint of the depth of her character, we get to see again in this. You know, we saw it in f season one when her mom was getting married, and here we see, you know, just how she interacts with Al. And I was so glad she she gave it to Al. I mean, it's like, come Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: on, grow up, give your dad a break. She just but Gabriela,, you're you're smiling, right? Gabriela: Yes. Yes. I was very much happy with her. I was like, yes, tell him off, please. I think the grudge was just getting old and it was pretty insensitive of him to kind of talk that way to Elaine who he knows like her past with like what happened to her dad and everything and so I Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Gabriela: mean it's just like be aware. And he was not aware. He wasn't even aware why she was mad at him. So I like that she told him to just let it go. Also, they do live in Port Wenn. Mel: Okay. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Gabriela: because last season Elaine moved out of her mom's place in Port Wenn because Doug was moving in with them. And so that's why Elaine lives with Louisa. Chesla Wechsler: Okay. It is good to have the best medicine encyclopedia here with us. Carol Doehler: Ha ha Mel: Yeah. Yeah, I was Gabriela: Yes, I have really good memory. Mel: glad. Carol Doehler: What yeah, I just was kinda wondering if they moved after they got married. Dum Dum and her mother. Mel: Mm. They could have. But yeah, I think she gave Al a much needed perspective of, you have a father who loves you. would basically like, would give anything to have that back. And yet you're being a child because you found out that he isn't your biological dad. well, Chesla Wechsler: That's right. Mel: he's your dad and everything but biology. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yep. Yep. Mel: I mean, and it sounds like, because he said, and I think there were hints of this a little bit last year too, but he said, you and I have been doing this race since you were six years old. Bert has been in Al life for, it sounds like at least since he was a very small child, if not maybe Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: from when he was a baby, which is why it makes it even, that Al is so angry at him because it's literally like, how do we know that this man wasn't whoever your father was? wasn't out of your life before were even born. He very well may have just been your father in the sense of creating you, but Bert was more of a father in the of acting that role. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: . you Chesla Wechsler: Right. Yeah, 'cause Al you know, the fact that he was surprised that Bert wasn't his father means he had no other hint. Right? Mel: Yeah, right. In the memory of anybody else. Chesla Wechsler: Correct. Yep. Or even a lack of someone, right? Mel: I also loved, I mean, again, the 80s references, but the Freebird they, Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Mel: Eden says something like, next thing you know, be singing Free Bird. And Martin, think, was like, no, Geneva's out of town. Like, they would have done it if Geneva was there. But I just, I started laughing. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. That was a that was a great comment. Yep. Have we seen Geneva this season yet? Mel: She was in the very first episode with Chesla Wechsler: Good. The mermaid? Mel: Yeah, but I don't remember her last week. Maybe she was there, but Gabriela, would know. Gabriela: I don't think she was in the last episode, but the first episode for sure. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: But she was in the first? Okay, good. 'Cause I was worried like, man, I hope Didi Conn's not like gone. I I want her to be on the show. Mel: Do remember she was in, she was with, when, Sarah's bedroom, yes, yeah. Gabriela: She's the one that started off the, Chesla Wechsler: Andrea Martin. Yeah. That's right. That's right. Good. And I still want to see the three girls together, the three old friends. I I hope they manage to make that happen. I was I was trying to write down you were talking about Freebird. I like how Eden says it's a a bunch of aer aerosmiths singing lobster shucking busybodies. Right. Gabriela: That's a mouthful. Chesla Wechsler: This th that is a mouth. I had to write that down. There was no way I was gonna Carol Doehler: Check. Chesla Wechsler: remember that. Carol Doehler: Say that fast three times, right? Chesla Wechsler: Yeah really. Yep. Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: And yeah. So what else? Gabriela: We found out that Chesla Wechsler: Gabriela,, go ahead. Gabriela: Glendon has cancer. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Gabriela: So that was interesting medical case that went on throughout the episode. I was kind of like wondering what, who it would be, because I do know that like men testing positive for a pregnancy test likely means that they have testicular cancer. So was kind of just wondering Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: who was going to be person Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: who has it. Turns out it's Glendon. Chesla Wechsler: I only knew that because it was a Doc Martin plot. That's the only reason I knew Gabriela: That's it. Chesla Wechsler: that. there were a lot of balls in this particular episode between the the guys and the the sea urchins with their gonads. Gabriela: Hmm Chesla Wechsler: I thought it was interesting that Glendon Gabriela: I like one of them. Chesla Wechsler: was willing to kind of blow off the fact that his workers might be smoking weed during their lunch hour. Mel: Mm-hmm, me too, me too. I was surprised given the type of personality he is that he would have covered for that. Chesla Wechsler: Well don't you think he did it only because he was afraid of losing workers? Mel: Yeah, definitely. Chesla Wechsler: I mean he even says that but I don't even think he needed to say it, I would have just known. Mel: I found it interesting and I guess kind of odd that Glendon is running the urchin thing, whatever urchin processing I guess that they're doing considering that he was so instrumental in that shtick with the Norwegians. I mean, I wouldn't Chesla Wechsler: Yep. Mel: think that the town would trust him enough to put him in charge of anything like that. Chesla Wechsler: When you think about why he was talking to the Norwegians, it was because the town was broke, right, and struggling financially. So here's the sea urchins. It's another way for the town not to be broke. So Gabriela: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: yeah, in my head it it almost raises him up a little bit. You know, still he's making money, right? So he's gonna make money either way. But if you for a second step back and say maybe his heart was in the right place that the Norwegians You know, if the town has Mel: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: kind of forgiven him and he's in this position now, like maybe he's rehabilitated, Gabriela: . Chesla Wechsler: except for the fact that he's just a jerk to Martin. Mel: Yeah, and I mean I know Gabriela I think you said in the first episode you had with Chesla You guys were speculating why and I think the reason why is is what you said is that you know He was the big fish in this town until Martin came along and I think he's threatened by that and then also you know there's suddenly this little kid that he used to tease and could probably make cry who now is smarter than him, more educated than him, and doesn't really care what he thinks of him anymore. And I think that sets him back. But yeah, because he's constantly bringing up the things that he did as a kid. it's like, you know, who cares? Like, who cares if he was scared at the crate run? Who cares if he was scared and he peed his pants? Who cares if he's a kid? Who cares? Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: But that was like the only thing he, other than the blood phobia thing that he figured out and reported him for, that was... seems like the only thing he can think to embarrass him with. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. you think there's something in their past that's more than just Glendon being a bully and picking on a kid? Like, do you think Martin somehow as a kid might have made Glendon look bad in some way? Maybe not intentionally, but maybe in school. Although I always thought Martin was just there for summers. Mel: I still think he could have, because he said something last episode about how he got teased, but he was also a little bit of a jerk as a kid, like a little bit of a know-it-all. And Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah, maybe. Mm-hmm. Mel: so I think maybe that was part of it. Maybe he pointed out some sort of intelligence gap that Glendon had, or he knew something that Glendon didn't, or he was more advanced grade-wise than Glendon for his age. mean, he could have done something to make him, you know... Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Hold a grudge. Mel: Of course, it also could have just been the only way he could have retaliated from Glendon's teasing as well. Just by saying, okay, you you're teasing me, you're hating me or whatever. here, you know, well, you're dumb or, know, in a way kids do things, tease one another. Chesla Wechsler: Right. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Gabriela: well, we got like a little bit of information from Sarah that first summer that he went to Port Wenn, he just wanted, after the crate race happened, he just wanted to read his books and be on the boat with Aunt Sarah. And so I Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: think he was, as you said, a smug little jerk, but I Mel: . Gabriela: think... I think it's probably still the same thing of like, Glendon being kind of... I think Martin has always been a lot smarter than he was. So I think he's always been threatened by Martin in that way. But don't know. guess hopefully we find out. I like learning about their past. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: But yeah. A lot of what Martin said in this episode about him as a kid was really a lot of good information. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Carol, you had a point? Carol Doehler: Well, I just kinda wonder if Glendon knew back then why Martin was so sad, if he got Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Carol Doehler: the whole story. And I mean Glendon to me he he'll go where the money is. He is a big jerk. He's a bully. He's stuck in like elementary, junior high school mentality when it comes to Martin. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol Doehler: But I also agree that he's looking out for the town, he wants a town to succeed, and he just comes off wrong trying to do it. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. At the end I thought that he smiled a little bit when he was leaving, didn't he? Mel: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: Yeah. I thought it was like a friendly kind of teasing. Like he was, like he didn't say thank you, but it was kind of his way acknowledging that there's like. some kind of acquaintanceship there. So yeah. Chesla Wechsler: I'd like to see them repair their relationship. Mel: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Or at least have one that's not adversarial. Gabriela: Mm. Carol Doehler: Yeah, Where Mel: Yeah. Carol Doehler: always making his digs all the time. Like every time they get together he's always got some snide remark it seems. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: I mean, I'm cautiously optimistic this time. really thought they were... Because Glendon backed off when he realized what was going on with his son and that Martin was actually trying to help him. And he backed off for a while and then came with him, with Martin getting between him and the Norwegians. And that's when his hackles came out again. But then again, Chesla Wechsler: Mm. Mel: he was probably threatening his economic well-being and his standing in the town. So I'm hoping... that they can, but I also think Martin is not going to easily forgive the fact that he reported him to the medical board and he did it out of spite, not, Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mel: for any other reason. Chesla Wechsler: Thinking of Glendon made me think of how we were trying to figure out who Mark's father might be. you know, just somebody of of the right age to be Mark's father and I cracked up when Mark was saying he wanted to try and date somebody who'd not met his mother. Gabriela: Okay. Okay. Carol Doehler: Yeah. Maybe he's growing up just a smidge. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: Okay. Chesla Wechsler: Or like he knows that anybody who can talk to his mother is gonna just get an earful of Marky. Marky Marky, Carol Doehler: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: right? Carol Doehler: And what about good old Aunt Sarah and her what did she call that Gabriela: Eddie McChestHair? Carol Doehler: Yeah, but that crusty old stinky guy, whatever. Yeah, just a nooner. Yeah. Well and Martin barged right into her house and he came after her last year for barging into his house. It's like, hey. Mel: So. Okay. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I love how he's just a nooner, right? Hoy Yeah. Carol Doehler: When did things change? Chesla Wechsler: Yep. Yep. Speaking of Aunt Sarah, Elizabeth Washington online pointed out that she thinks Aunt Sarah can hold her own against Eden, and I have to say, I agree. Carol Doehler: yeah. When she pulled out that wine bottle twice the size that Eden brought, it's like yeah, it's kinda like in your face. Mel: yeah. You Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. we're gonna need a lot of lubrication to make this lunch work. Carol Doehler: Yeah. And that interaction of how she put her arms up like this, it's like, my gosh, could you be even more awkward than you already are? Chesla Wechsler: I I really agree that the actress you know, Eliza Coupe she's doing a fantastic job with that. Mel: So speaking of Eden, kind of if we could go back to her for a minute, you know, in this episode, I did like the fact that they developed her character a little bit more. Like they showed her as being somewhat vulnerable that, you know, I pretended I don't care what people think, but I do. Which I, you know, I ended up almost feeling Gabriela: . Mel: I felt for her. And I actually think how they're portraying her. I mean, I even felt for her when she felt the need to try to compete with Louisa as far as the singing goes. I mean, I guess I feel for her because, she's, know, she's nerdy, socially awkward. there's elements of myself, I think, in her that I see. And I just, I get the idea that like, Eden is, the shy, like a socially awkward girl trying to compete with the, the cheerleader, Louisa, for the guy. That's kind how I saw the karaoke scene. And then when she, when she's talking about how she doesn't care what people think and how, how oblivious she is to just like social cues. and going back to kind of Gabriela's point, I don't think she intends to be like Gabriela: . Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: cruel, I think that's just her personality. Either she has some sort of, know, identified-ism or she's just very socially awkward. And I'm finding myself feeling, I don't want to say I feel bad for her, but I kind of get her a little bit. I get where she is, that awkward, and even the self-care stuff, like wearing the red blanket with the clothes and that weird gold mask. It's like she tries this stuff, but doesn't quite get it right. Gabriela: . Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: It's like the quintessential awkward, awkward person. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. As an awkward person. I like Eden. Mel: Yeah, Carol Doehler: Okay. Mel: I do too. Chesla Wechsler: I I can identify. I have to admit, when they called Martin the GOAT, I chuckled because I you know, one of my stories has both Martin getting called a GOAT the GOAT and a guy with a completely occluded carotid that needs an emergency end Gabriela: Okay. Chesla Wechsler: arterectomy. I'm like, I'm feeling a little inspirational. Gabriela: Okay. Chesla Wechsler: I like Gabriela's like you've written it into existence. Like, I don't know. But it was kind of fun to you know, I'm sure they're not reading my stuff and and incorporating it into their plot lines, but it was kind of fun to think that professional writers might think the same way I do. Mel: Chesla's the Best Medicine version of the Simpsons. She's predicting things. Chesla Wechsler: So anyway, do we have anything else? Do we have any predictions of what we you know Gabriela,, see, you know stuff. I can't have you make predictions. So Carol and Mel, Mel: I'm sorry. Carol Doehler: Yeah, look at that look on her face. Chesla Wechsler: what do you guys think comes up? And Gabriela, can go. Mel: You can start Carol, I'm still thinking. Carol Doehler: Yeah, I you know, I don't know, 'cause he's supposed to go to Boston next week, right? To go to that ball or something. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Carol Doehler: And then people start dropping or doing something, getting sick and he doesn't get to go. So I don't know, is that gonna be kind of a deal breaker with Eden that you didn't come and you know, I'm gonna like question our relationship? I I don't know. I don't know what to think. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Mel: Yeah, that's Carol Doehler: But that Mel: kind of where I was going to is like, the fact that, well, for one thing, the fact that he keeps getting waylaid is, you know, it's that like a bigger sign that, you know, maybe you're not meant to go back to Boston, maybe you're not meant to be with this person. And the fact that he keeps responding instead of saying, hey, I have to go, kind of tells you where, you know, where his, his, his priorities lie. So I could, I could easily see even saying, okay, I think this is, this is that you're not going to go back to Boston. there was, think in the season, like in one of the trailers that showed like clips from the first part of the season, there was a question of her saying, I there was a question asking, hey, were you serious about saying you were going to go back to Boston? And I'm kind of wondering if maybe happens after this, in this next episode kind brings her to that question of, hey, you know, is this something you actually really want? Like she's actually forcing him to come to a decision. instead of, of just going along with it. Because like you were saying, Carol, I think there might be something either him not going to the this gala or that makes her think, hey, he really doesn't, he really doesn't want to do this. He's just going along with what I'm saying. And if she has the self-awareness to do that, I think that's that's great. But she's also, you know, she's an intelligent person. She's going to see that there's something going on. Chesla Wechsler: Or is the village actually trying to intervene here and come up with a whole bunch Mel: Mmm. Chesla Wechsler: of things to keep him from going to this in the hopes that it could drive a wedge? Mel: That's a good point too, I hadn't thought of that, that could be really Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Aunt Mel: funny. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And Aunt Sarah could be behind it. Carol Doehler: You wouldn't put any I wouldn't put anything beyond An Sarah. Yeah, it's Chesla Wechsler: Past her. Yeah. Yeah. Mel: Mm-hmm. Carol Doehler: she's she's something else. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Now now Gabriela's gonna like place her bets on, Kalshi or something on what's going on. Yes, yes. Cool. Hey Gabriela: Yeah, interesting theories. Yeah, I kind of know these the next two episodes are the ones that I know about. But you'll get nothing out of me in terms of spoilers. Chesla Wechsler: No. That's Carol Doehler: Okay. Chesla Wechsler: good. 'Cause I I love trying to predict things. Gabriela: I also don't know ev- yeah. I also don't know everything that's gonna happen. I just know some plots and some script lines. Chesla Wechsler: Okay. Cool. Mel: Okay. Chesla Wechsler: Should be fun. Looking forward to it. Folks online Gabriela: and behind the scenes videos. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. that's you're d you're dangerous. Gabriela: a lot with these with this next episode a lot a lot Chesla Wechsler: Nice. Nice.
