- 0:11Today on Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram.
- 0:14There is an awesome, untapped resource in the
- 0:18body of Christ. It's the difference between people
- 0:20having a great day or a terrible day, and the
- 0:23word is encouragement. You want to learn how
- 0:26to speak life into those you love? Stay with
- 0:29us and find out how. I'm Dave Drewy, and today
- 0:33on Living on the Edge, Chip Ingram begins a series
- 0:35called Building Authentic Community, How to Lift
- 0:38Up Those You Love. Turns out even the people
- 0:41who seem to have it all together, confident,
- 0:43successful, like they've got it all figured out,
- 0:46need encouragement just as much as anyone else.
- 0:49Turning to 1 Thessalonians chapter 1, Chip shows
- 0:53us how the Apostle Paul used the power of an
- 0:55encouraging word to keep a persecuted, struggling
- 0:58church from giving up on their faith. And we'll
- 1:01see why this kind of encouragement is so vital
- 1:03for you and me today. Well, now here's Chip with
- 1:07the start of a message titled, How to Help Others
- 1:09Over Life's Humps. When you really talk about
- 1:13how to get over life's humps, there's a number
- 1:15of things that you need. But one of the most
- 1:17powerful, powerful things that God has ever given
- 1:21us is speech. The power of an affirming word
- 1:27given lovingly, authentically as God leads is
- 1:32absolutely beyond what you can imagine. In fact,
- 1:36the Bible is replete with multiple examples of
- 1:40the difference just a word can make. Proverbs
- 1:4325, 11 says, a word aptly spoken is like apples
- 1:47of gold in settings of silver. What a picture.
- 1:51Or in Proverbs 10, 11, it says the mouth of the
- 1:55righteous is a fountain of life, but violence
- 2:00overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. And third,
- 2:03Proverbs 15, 4, the tongue that brings healing
- 2:07is a tree of life, but deceitful tongue crushes
- 2:12the spirit. One simple word really makes a difference.
- 2:18Now, here's the question we want to ask and answer
- 2:21tonight. Put simply, how can we learn to speak
- 2:26into the lives of people that we love in such
- 2:29a way that it really encourages them? I mean,
- 2:32that it changes them. I'm not sure the Apostle
- 2:35Paul, although he was an apostle and filled with
- 2:39the Spirit, grasped how much he was going to
- 2:42encourage the Thessalonians when he wrote the
- 2:45book to them. And so we want to look tonight
- 2:48at four ways to speak life to those that we love.
- 2:54And our model is going to be the Apostle Paul
- 2:56and how he did it to the church of Thessalonica.
- 3:01We're going to look at chapter one, the first
- 3:0310 verses. I want you to get a picture before
- 3:07we read this in one reading of the people that
- 3:11he wrote to and how they felt and what they were
- 3:13going through. What was the humps that they needed
- 3:16to get over? Because then when you understand
- 3:18that, as we walk through the passage, you'll
- 3:21get an idea that God really understands the humps
- 3:24you're going through. The apostle Paul is on
- 3:26a second missionary journey and he's heading
- 3:28where he thinks God wants him to. There's open
- 3:30doors and open doors and open doors and he keeps
- 3:32preaching and sharing. He goes to every synagogue
- 3:34and late one night he gets this vision, this
- 3:37dream, the Macedonian call. And he hears from
- 3:41God to go toward Greece. And so he gets up the
- 3:45next morning and tells the guys, hey, there's
- 3:47a change in orders. And so he travels over to
- 3:51Philippi. That's in Macedonia. And there's not
- 3:54even a synagogue there. And so the practice of
- 3:56the day when there's not a synagogue is the faithful
- 3:58Jewish people would go to a riverbank and have
- 4:01a prayer meeting. You can pick up the story in
- 4:03Acts 16 if you want to read it later. And he
- 4:05shows up and there's a lady named Lydia. And
- 4:07boy, she comes to Christ in a group of women.
- 4:10Paul lands in jail later. There's an earthquake
- 4:13and he and Silas are singing at night and the
- 4:16jailer and his whole household, they come to
- 4:18Christ. The Philippian church is born. And I
- 4:20mean, for about two months, he's there or more.
- 4:22And things really take off. He's politely asked
- 4:25to leave that city, which happens to him a lot.
- 4:28He travels by on the great Ignatian Highway that
- 4:31connected the Roman Empire. And he goes by two
- 4:35big cities, but they weren't the right ones.
- 4:38And he travels at least five or six days to Thessalonica.
- 4:41It's a harbor city. It's got about 200 ,000 people.
- 4:44It's one of the major ports. It is a political,
- 4:47strategic, economic, cultural crossroads of that
- 4:52portion of the Roman Empire. Acts 16 and 17,
- 4:55we find he does what he always does, to the Jew
- 4:57first and also to the Greek. Week number one,
- 4:59he shares it, and they say, hmm, interesting,
- 5:02we're not sure. Come back next week. So he comes
- 5:05the next week, and he teaches and preaches in
- 5:07the synagogue that all the hopes, all the dreams,
- 5:09all the prophecies about the Messiah, he came,
- 5:12he died, he's been resurrected, and he's alive.
- 5:16And they didn't go for that too much. A few people
- 5:18trusted Christ and he began to share with the
- 5:20Gentiles. By the third week, so many Gentiles
- 5:23were coming to the faith that the Jews got jealous
- 5:25and they said, get out of here. We know from
- 5:28this book that he stayed in Thessalonica for
- 5:30at least a few months because he received two
- 5:33financial gifts from the church at Philippi.
- 5:35He was there long enough to develop his trade
- 5:37because he says, I worked with my own hands,
- 5:39but it was a lot of persecution. You walk downtown
- 5:43Thessalonica, there's idols everywhere. These
- 5:47people came to Christ in the midst of a great
- 5:49persecution. And when they came to faith, if
- 5:51they were Jewish, they were separated from their
- 5:54homes. So you had people whose moms and dads
- 5:57said, don't bother coming home. You had wives
- 6:00who came to Christ whose husbands said, hey,
- 6:02you know what? Don't bother coming home. You're
- 6:04disinherited. For Gentiles, they had friends
- 6:07and they would go to all these temples and were
- 6:09involved in all kind of immorality and worshiping
- 6:11of all these idols. And when they came to Christ,
- 6:13they turned from those idols to serve the living
- 6:15God. And all of a sudden, they're not getting
- 6:17invited to parties anymore. Not only are they
- 6:19not getting invited to parties, but they're messing
- 6:21up the economy. Now people are mad at them. So
- 6:24they're isolated and they're alienated. In fact,
- 6:27Paul really gets beat up on this one. So he gets
- 6:31run out of town. Silas is sent back to Philippi
- 6:34to figure out, you know, how they're doing and
- 6:36encourage them. Paul gets run out of town. He
- 6:40ends up in Athens by himself. And we hear in
- 6:422 Corinthians, he's as discouraged and despondent
- 6:45as ever. Finally, he gets refreshed by one of
- 6:47the fellows he's close to, Titus. Ends up finally
- 6:51in Corinth. He came through here about some time
- 6:55in about 49 AD. It's about 18, 24 months max
- 6:59when he writes 1 Thessalonians. By this time,
- 7:03Silas has made the circuit. Timothy has made
- 7:05the circuit to check on the church. And they've
- 7:08met him back in Corinth. And he's gotten a report.
- 7:10And he's writing this letter to a group of people
- 7:12that there's a high price tag for being a Christian.
- 7:15That it's tough. That life, economics, family
- 7:19relationships, social acceptability, it is all
- 7:22very, very difficult. And so he writes them a
- 7:25letter to encourage them. Now just follow along.
- 7:29We're going to read, not study it yet. Just listen.
- 7:32And imagine you being one of those people. Imagine
- 7:36what it was like if this had happened to your
- 7:38life and that little apostle guy. And of course,
- 7:42you've got all this joy and God's changed your
- 7:44life and you're forgiven and you have peace.
- 7:46But day to day, it's tough. And you haven't seen
- 7:49him in about 18 months. And there's probably
- 7:50a few days that you get so discouraged, you start
- 7:53doubting, you know, could this be true? Other
- 7:55days, you just think, I can't take it anymore.
- 7:58Other days you say, you know, what's the use?
- 8:00You know, we're sharing our faith, we're doing
- 8:01what he said, but it's not making any difference.
- 8:04Listen to what your mentor, Paul, would say to
- 8:08you. To the church of Thessalonica, from Paul,
- 8:12Silas, and Timothy, and God the Father and our
- 8:15Lord Jesus Christ, grace and peace to you. We
- 8:18always thank God for you. mentioning you in our
- 8:21prayers, we continually remember before our God
- 8:24and Father, your works produced by faith, your
- 8:26labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired
- 8:30by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know,
- 8:33brothers loved by God, that he's chosen you.
- 8:37How? Because our gospel came to you not simply
- 8:40with words, but also with power, with the Holy
- 8:43Spirit, and with deep conviction. You know how
- 8:46we lived among you for your sake. You became
- 8:49imitators or mimics of us and of the Lord. In
- 8:52spite of the severe suffering, you welcomed the
- 8:55message with joy given by the Holy Spirit. And
- 8:59so you became a model to all the believers in
- 9:02Macedonia and Achaia, that's Greece. The Lord's
- 9:06message rang out from you, not only in Macedonia
- 9:09and Achaia, your faith in God has become known
- 9:11everywhere. Therefore, we don't need to say anything
- 9:15about it for they themselves report what kind
- 9:18of reception you gave us. They tell us how you
- 9:21turn to God from idols to serve the living and
- 9:23the true God and to wait for his son from heaven
- 9:27whom he raised from the dead, Jesus, who rescues
- 9:31us from the coming wrath. Would that be an encouraging
- 9:35word? Wouldn't it be good to hear that when things
- 9:39get really, really tough? Now, as I've looked
- 9:43at that and studied it and examined it, I think
- 9:46there's four clear things that the Apostle Paul
- 9:49does to encourage people whose lives have lots
- 9:53of humps. They all have to do with speech. And
- 9:57what I'd like to do now is go through and study
- 9:59it with you and briefly look at each of these
- 10:03four things out of these ten verses. And we'll
- 10:07use them as our example about how we're going
- 10:09to talk to one another, how we're going to talk
- 10:12to our mates, how we're going to talk to our
- 10:14friends, how we're going to talk to our bosses
- 10:16and employees. We're going to learn how to communicate
- 10:20with our mouth in such a way that every person
- 10:25that you and me get around, we're going to encourage.
- 10:28So let's look at verse one. First of all, I think
- 10:32we need to learn to bestow a blessing. Did you
- 10:35notice how he started it? Paul and Silvanus and
- 10:39Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in
- 10:43God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Now
- 10:47notice what he says. That's the introduction.
- 10:49Grace to you and peace. The root word for grace
- 10:55is the word joy. It's God's blessing and goodness
- 10:59that comes apart from our merit. And we think
- 11:03of peace as the absence of conflict. But this
- 11:05word for peace means the wholeness of God, the
- 11:08shalom of God. And so the very first thing he
- 11:12does, the first words out of his mouth are, hey,
- 11:14how are you doing? Are you hanging in there?
- 11:16You know, are you getting with the program? What
- 11:17is it? He bestows a blessing, grace, God's unmerited,
- 11:22unlimited love for you, grace to you and peace,
- 11:28his wholeness, his blessing. All of who you are
- 11:32in Christ, that's what I long. Now for us, culturally,
- 11:36that fit well with Paul, but I don't know about
- 11:39you, but don't try this one. Don't go to work
- 11:41and say, grace and peace to you. They'll think
- 11:49you drank something or ate something funny over
- 11:51the weekend. In fact, probably not even a good
- 11:54one to go home tonight and say, my children,
- 11:57my wife, my friends, grace and peace. That's
- 12:01probably not going to work. So how do you bestow
- 12:04a blessing? I'd like to encourage you to think
- 12:07about blessing people whenever you leave them.
- 12:11When you leave your home, when you leave work,
- 12:14when you leave a friend. Some specifics might
- 12:19be just a look in the eye and you say, I'm praying
- 12:23for you. I'm praying for you. Or you might express,
- 12:30God's going to use you today. You know, they're
- 12:34taking off or they're leaving or you're leaving.
- 12:36Hey, I want you to know, God's going to use you
- 12:37today. Or even, you know, may God's peace really
- 12:42reign in your heart. I'm going to pray that for
- 12:44you today. Another possible example that I've
- 12:50used in my house, just the blessing of tell someone,
- 12:53you know, it's a privilege. I want you to know
- 12:57it's a privilege to be your friend. It's a privilege
- 13:01to be your mate. It's a privilege to be your
- 13:04dad or to be your mom. See, it's a blessing.
- 13:07What you're saying is you matter. You matter
- 13:11to me and you matter to God. Second time I encourage
- 13:16you to give a blessing is not only when you leave
- 13:18someone, but at bedtime. I say this primarily
- 13:22for those of you that are married and have children.
- 13:27You know that old thing of tucking your kids
- 13:29in? If you're not doing it, start doing it. Don't
- 13:35send kids to bed with TVs on and sit on their
- 13:39bed. Look them in the eye. Pray with them. Touch
- 13:44them with your hands. And ask God's blessing
- 13:47upon their life. Do it every night. Bless your
- 13:53children. Evoke God's blessing and favor and
- 13:58grace on them. The security will be incredible.
- 14:04Third is you can bless people through notes,
- 14:06email. You know, it's a blessing to say, I'm
- 14:10thinking about you today. I'm praying for you.
- 14:13It's a blessing to say, hey. Hey, as I was praying
- 14:16this morning, Psalm 37, 4, just want you to know
- 14:19I'm asking God to give you the desires of your
- 14:22heart. Do you get the idea? Have you got it?
- 14:26I want to encourage you this week. If you want
- 14:28to speak life into those that you love, be still
- 14:31a blessing. But it doesn't stop there. Notice
- 14:34verse two and three, Paul's appreciation. He
- 14:38says, we give thanks to God always for all of
- 14:40you, making mention of you in our prayers. constantly
- 14:44bearing in mind, notice this, your work of faith
- 14:47and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in
- 14:52our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of God
- 14:55our Father. Notice the structure here. First
- 14:58of all, he gives thanks. He lets them know, I'm
- 15:02praying and when I pray, you pop up on the screen.
- 15:06That's what he says. When I'm praying, Thessalonians,
- 15:09you pop up on the screen. And it's none of this
- 15:12vague, God bless you, aren't you kind of nice
- 15:14people? I think of the specific things that I've
- 15:17seen in your life. He says, I thank God specifically
- 15:21for three things. Number one, he says, your work
- 15:26produced by faith. The word work here, we get
- 15:30our word energy or activity from. He says, I
- 15:35thank God specifically for the activity and the
- 15:39love, referring probably to evangelism, because
- 15:41we hear later how it's gone out, and also of
- 15:44their good deeds and kind acts toward one another.
- 15:47But that's not enough. He says, I thank God for
- 15:49your work that is produced by your faith in Christ,
- 15:53but I also thank him for your labor of love.
- 15:56The word labor here, prompted by love, denotes
- 15:58extraordinary effort. It literally meant to cut,
- 16:03to toil, It's a picture of someone taking bread
- 16:07and hitting it and trying to get it in a certain
- 16:10form to be usable. Ryrie says it's toiling to
- 16:14the point of exhaustion out of affection for
- 16:17another person. How would you like someone to
- 16:20pray and thank God that when they look at your
- 16:22life, they see activity that is other -centered
- 16:25because of your faith in Christ, and they see
- 16:28you with a self -sacrificial toil because you,
- 16:32agape, love God and love other people? That'd
- 16:35be pretty encouraging, wouldn't it? Third thing
- 16:37he says, though, is he says he also thanks God
- 16:39for their steadfastness of hope, or really it's
- 16:42patience, or I like the best translation is endurance.
- 16:47The word is a compound word, hupomeno. It literally
- 16:50has the idea of kind of a man with weight on
- 16:52his back. It means holding up or remaining under
- 16:55pressure. It has the idea of when things get
- 16:58hard, when things get difficult, when everyone
- 17:01else cops out. You hang in there. It means to
- 17:06be aggressive, to be courageous, to not give
- 17:09up, to not fall into self -pity. You hang in
- 17:13there and keep on doing when you don't feel like
- 17:16keep on doing. Why? Because you're inspired by
- 17:19the certainty of hope. Christ is returning. God
- 17:23is good. God is sovereign. And then notice the
- 17:26last phrase. In the presence, it literally means
- 17:28before the face of our God and Father. He expresses
- 17:34his appreciation for who they are and for what
- 17:38they've done. Do you do that? Boy, I think about
- 17:45this as a father. I hope you have a different
- 17:48personality than mine. I really do. My personality
- 17:51is fairly analytical. And when I see something,
- 17:54the thing that pops out immediately is what's
- 17:56wrong or how it can be improved. You know, if
- 18:01you're a kid, you know what you hear a lot of?
- 18:03Oh, yeah, that's real good, except for. Or, yeah,
- 18:06yeah, but. You know, do you know how demotivating
- 18:11that is? You see, people who are constantly expressing
- 18:18appreciation, thanksgiving, boy, those are people
- 18:24that motivate and lift up and build up. You know
- 18:28what Paul basically did? He said, this is what
- 18:31you're doing right. And I thank God for it. And
- 18:34I'm not being vague and I'm not blowing smoke.
- 18:36I'm talking about these three specific things.
- 18:40And by the way, it's happening. You want some
- 18:42encouragement? It's happening before the very
- 18:44face of God and he sees what's going on too.
- 18:47Boy, wouldn't that be encouraging? Let me give
- 18:50you a practical application. Ken Blanchard, he's
- 18:54the author of The One Minute Manager and a number
- 18:56of other books. In fact, Raving Fans is one that
- 18:59would really flow right out of this passage.
- 19:04And he says in that, tell people what they're
- 19:06doing right. Wander around. And catch people
- 19:10doing stuff right. And then praise them. And
- 19:13then he says, make it progressive. Don't wait
- 19:15until they have it perfect. When you see people
- 19:17making little inclinations toward doing better,
- 19:20praise them and appreciate them for the progress
- 19:23they're making. Some of us are waiting until
- 19:25people get it completely right. They're never
- 19:28going to get it completely right because they're
- 19:29a lot like us. Right? How you doing expressing
- 19:35your appreciation? Have you told a friend that
- 19:39lately? Have you told your parents that lately?
- 19:44Have you told fellow workers, people that you
- 19:46do ministry with lately? How much you really
- 19:49appreciate? And by the way, jot down under that,
- 19:52be specific, not vague. Second, be objective.
- 20:01Not just feelings. Specific and objective things
- 20:04they've done. Not just, oh, I feel so good I
- 20:06get to be your dad or I feel so good we get to
- 20:08work together. That's nice. But be specific,
- 20:12be objective, and then include some biblical
- 20:14truth. Notice how the Apostle Paul did that.
- 20:16I thank God for these three things. You want
- 20:18some truth to go along with that? All these things
- 20:20are happening right before God. He sees it too.
- 20:26You can speak life into people's lives if you
- 20:31get in the habit of bestowing a blessing, number
- 20:33one, and number two, expressing your appreciation
- 20:36for who they are and for what they do and what
- 20:40they've done. Third, though, Paul has confidence
- 20:42in their faith. Look at verse 4. Knowing, brethren,
- 20:47beloved by God, his choice of you. By the way,
- 20:52before we go on, this word knowing is very interesting.
- 20:54You know, he's thanked God for him. Then he says
- 20:56knowing. Two words in the New Testament for knowing.
- 20:59One, a knowledge that comes by way of experience.
- 21:01The other, an objective knowledge. It's just
- 21:03fact. Kind of like gravity. You can believe in
- 21:06it, not believe in it. Jump off a five -story
- 21:08building. Same effect. That's this word. He says,
- 21:14I know for a fact. What's he know for a fact?
- 21:17Brethren. Notice that word of love. Beloved by
- 21:19God. Special word only used of kings in the Old
- 21:22Testament. His choice of you. You know, I bet
- 21:27these guys were doubting. I bet there was days
- 21:30they got up and they were just kept coming at
- 21:32him and coming at him and coming at him. And
- 21:33they're thinking, you know, maybe I'm not really
- 21:35in the family. The Apostle Paul says, I'll tell
- 21:38you something. I know for a fact. that you are
- 21:43a part of God's family, that your sins are forgiven,
- 21:46that the spirit of God dwells in you, that your
- 21:48eternal resting place will be with Jesus in heaven
- 21:52and all the power in heaven and earth is available
- 21:54for you day by day now. I'm certain of his choice
- 21:58of you. And you say, well, how can Paul say that?
- 22:00Well, he tells us how he can say that. Look at
- 22:02verse five. For our gospel did not come to you
- 22:06in word only. It just wasn't words. but also
- 22:11in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full
- 22:14conviction just as you know what kind of men
- 22:19we proved for your sake to be. The fact that
- 22:23the Thessalonians were a part of God's family
- 22:25is shown by the character of the message given
- 22:28and by the sincere acceptance of it received
- 22:31and the transformed lives that followed. Look
- 22:34at the next line. You also became... We get our
- 22:40word mimic from this. You became mimics, exact
- 22:44reproduction of the originals. You also became
- 22:48imitators of us and of the Lord. How did they
- 22:51imitate the Lord? Having received the word in
- 22:56much tribulation with joy of the Holy Spirit.
- 23:00Boy, I'll tell you what, you talk about a shot
- 23:03in the arm. You talk about something that quiets
- 23:06doubts in your heart. He says, I know for certain
- 23:10because when I was preaching, there was not just
- 23:13word, there was power. And not only was there
- 23:15power, but God authenticated in your hearts and
- 23:18in your lives. And then it's been evidenced by
- 23:21how you've lived. You're in. It's clear. Can
- 23:27I encourage you to verbalize your confidence
- 23:29in other people's faith? You know, down deep,
- 23:35everyone thinks someone else is way more spiritual
- 23:37than them. If you're married, you're sure your
- 23:40wife is. And most of us are right. But no matter
- 23:45who you rub up against, the fact of the matter,
- 23:48day in and day out, we honestly believe in our
- 23:51heart that all the people around us, they must
- 23:53know God more than we do. They pray more or better
- 23:56or God listens to them more than we do. And,
- 23:59you know, we have a real confidence problem when
- 24:02it really comes with walking with God. One of
- 24:05the reasons is we don't verbalize to one another.
- 24:09what we see in one another's lives. Somehow it
- 24:12makes us feel uncomfortable, doesn't it? Because
- 24:13that's more than just sort of casual conversation.
- 24:17You know, you don't do stuff like, hey, you want
- 24:19to go out for lunch? Yeah. Hey, boy, these tacos
- 24:21are good. Yeah, tacos are great. A little hot
- 24:22sauce. Hey, I love the hot sauce. It's really
- 24:23good here. By the way, it's really evident that
- 24:26the power of Jesus Christ is at work in your
- 24:28life. And I just wanted to share that. Would
- 24:30you like another taco? I mean, it's really kind
- 24:36of a bit. You kind of go to that next level with
- 24:39people to say to them, you know, the evidence
- 24:42of the working of the Spirit of God in your life
- 24:47is a deep encouragement to me. When's the last
- 24:51time you told someone how real and how evident
- 24:55the working of God in them is to you? Because
- 25:00you know what we are? We're little mirrors to
- 25:02one another, and we need that. There was a fellow
- 25:07named Don Geiger. And he was the pastor of the
- 25:11church in Dallas. We moved to Dallas and Teresa
- 25:14and I moved there with two kids and a year or
- 25:17so later had our third and went to seminary there.
- 25:21And we went to this church of about 1 ,800 or
- 25:242 ,000 people and we were just overwhelmed. Except
- 25:27really, we thought, oh, it's a big church and
- 25:29we'll visit, but we can't go here because, you
- 25:31know, big churches are big and impersonal. And
- 25:33the first week someone introduced themselves
- 25:35and took us home for lunch. And the next week
- 25:37they met us and took us home for Sunday night.
- 25:39what we realized is that it's not the size of
- 25:42the group, it's how connected you are. And they
- 25:44had things for our kids that were just phenomenal.
- 25:48And Don Geiger became one of my mentors and heroes.
- 25:51And boy, he didn't have a lot of time and had
- 25:54a lot of demands. And I'd make a lunch appointment
- 25:56and wait two months to get to see him. And very
- 25:58humble guy, great guy. Did an internship there
- 26:01at that church a little bit later. But he...
- 26:03more than any other person as I was praying this
- 26:06through, has verbalized his confidence in my
- 26:09faith in the areas where I struggled. I was out
- 26:12at the little church in Texas, and boy, you know,
- 26:15my first everything happened there. My first
- 26:18problem in this area, my first problem in that
- 26:19area, my first problem, and I never would, you
- 26:21know, call Don. I'd call Don, he'd take the call,
- 26:23hey Don, you know, what do I do, what do I do,
- 26:25you know? And he would ask some questions, force
- 26:30me to think it through on my own, and I always
- 26:32remember this phrase. You're a good man, Chip.
- 26:37You're a good man, Chip. And then he'd follow
- 26:40it by, Chip, you get faith. God will show you
- 26:44what to do. And then somewhere in that conversation,
- 26:48he'd always say something like, trust your instincts.
- 26:52God's spirit will show you. He put you there
- 26:54for a reason and he'll show you whatever you
- 26:56need. And you know, every time I would talk to
- 27:00that man, he always was a mirror that reflected
- 27:03God was at work when I couldn't see it myself.
- 27:07I didn't think I had what it took to make the
- 27:10decision. I didn't think I had what it took to
- 27:14go to the next level spiritually. What Jesus
- 27:18is saying to you tonight, will you please communicate
- 27:21what you see in brothers and sisters in Christ
- 27:24and confirm and verbalize your confidence in
- 27:28their faith so they can grasp that they really
- 27:31have it and you will do them a service that is
- 27:34incredible. Fourth thing the Apostle Paul does,
- 27:39is he affirms not only their faith, but the impact
- 27:42of their life. Look at verse 7. He said they
- 27:46received the word and much tribulation with joy
- 27:50of the Holy Spirit, verse 6, so that you became
- 27:53an example or a model to all the believers in
- 27:56Macedonia and Achaia. Why? For the word of the
- 28:00Lord has sounded forth from you, not only in
- 28:04Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place
- 28:07your faith toward God has gone forth, so that...
- 28:09We have no need to say anything. For they. Remember
- 28:13it's a cultural center. Remember there's all
- 28:15these ships coming in. There's people traveling.
- 28:17200 ,000 people. It's a place. And they come
- 28:19in. And they hear about the faith. And these
- 28:20people's lives are dynamically changed. And everyone
- 28:23is going out. And the word of God sounded. It's
- 28:26in the perfect tense. It's the picture of a trumpet
- 28:29blow or an echo. And the idea is the echo's range
- 28:32is going farther and farther and farther. He
- 28:35says you received the God of God. eternity in
- 28:40your heart in the midst of a culture where it
- 28:42was tough and you've lived faithfully and you
- 28:45don't even have to tell us what's happened. The
- 28:47impact of your life is so phenomenal. People
- 28:51are coming to us and telling us how our visit
- 28:54went and what's happening in your life. Verse
- 28:58nine, for they themselves report about us what
- 29:00kind of a reception we had with you and notice
- 29:03their testimony. Not some ooey gooey, well, they
- 29:06had a religious experience. Here's their testimony.
- 29:10how you turned to God from idols. Why? To serve
- 29:15a living and true God and to wait for his son
- 29:21from heaven whom he raised from the dead, that
- 29:23is Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come.
- 29:26Speaking of judgment, he affirms your life has
- 29:33impact. We always tend to focus on what we're
- 29:37not doing or we need to do more of this or more
- 29:39of that. The Apostle Paul bestows a blessing.
- 29:42The Apostle Paul expresses appreciation. The
- 29:45Apostle Paul verbalizes his confidence and now
- 29:48he affirms the impact of their life. The single
- 29:53most encouraging thing is those Thessalonians
- 29:57would know that God had actually used them. You
- 30:02know why? Because those of you involved in ministry,
- 30:05there's a great price tag and you're paying a
- 30:07great price tag and you get opposition and you're
- 30:10putting in tons of hours and you're loving kids
- 30:12and college students and junior hires and you're
- 30:14running tech equipment and you're here early
- 30:15and you're here late and you're doing evangelism
- 30:17out here and you're doing home groups and community
- 30:19groups and Bible study groups and you're giving
- 30:21your life away and the big question that nags
- 30:24you in the back of your mind is, is it for anything?
- 30:28Does it really matter? And we need, we need to
- 30:33communicate to one another the impact of one
- 30:37another's lives. You can't imagine that gift.
- 30:43And you probably are unaware, I get lots of great
- 30:48encouragement and feedback. Give it to other
- 30:51people. Give it to the people who aren't visible.
- 30:54They need to know that their life is making a
- 30:59difference. By way of conclusion, I think we
- 31:03grossly underestimate the awesome power of an
- 31:06affirming word. We just grossly underestimate
- 31:10it. Secondly, we grossly underestimate how deeply
- 31:15those around us are hurting. Quote, loneliness.
- 31:19It seems like it's the hardest issue of human
- 31:22existence. Well, let's not hear the word without
- 31:27responding. What I would like to ask you now,
- 31:30who needs an affirming word from you today? Who
- 31:34do you know that has some humps? to go over that
- 31:38needs you to write them a note and tell them
- 31:41what they're doing right. Be specific, be objective,
- 31:47and add an element of God's truth. And we will
- 31:49pray that God will show us what to do and whom
- 31:52to write. Father, thank you for the power of
- 31:55your word. We believe that you will bring to
- 32:01our mind a name of a person that needs a word
- 32:06of encouragement. Help us to write just a brief,
- 32:10encouraging, specific word of appreciation or
- 32:15affirmation that would let someone know we see
- 32:18you working in them. In Jesus' name, amen. You're

- 33:08just love. put into action, the very thing our

- 33:14the subject of Chip Ingram's book, I Choose Love,
- 33:17How to Love Your Neighbor as Yourself. It challenges
- 33:20the idea that love is a feeling that just happens
- 33:23to you, showing instead that real, lasting love
- 33:26is a decision you make, one act of kindness at

- 34:1430024. Well, now here's Chip Ingram. When you
- 34:19hear this passage from the Apostle Paul through
- 34:221 Thessalonians, you're tempted to think that
- 34:25Paul got his MBA from Harvard and he did it at
- 34:29their business school in the area of motivation
- 34:30and inspiration. You can go to a lot of seminars
- 34:34and a lot of people can say a lot of stuff, but
- 34:36this information in 1 Thessalonians is the best
- 34:40I've ever read on how to help people reach their
- 34:43God -given potential. There are principles in
- 34:45here that help people become... all God designed
- 34:48them to be. And they're here for us. Direct content
- 34:52to direct people in that day, but timeless principles
- 34:55for us. He gives us four ways to speak life into
- 34:59those that we love. Let me give you those four
- 35:02ways by way of reminder that you can practice
- 35:04them today. Way number one, bestow a blessing
- 35:08on people. Why? Because everyone's fearful. Everyone
- 35:12needs the sense of approval. Number two, express
- 35:16your appreciation. Why? Because we all get down
- 35:19on ourselves and we lose perspective. Number
- 35:22three, affirm the impact that their life has
- 35:26had. Why? Because we tend to focus on what we've
- 35:30done wrong instead of focusing on how much progress
- 35:33that we've made. And then finally, verbalize
- 35:36your confidence in their faith. Why? Because
- 35:39we all struggle with doubt and insecurity. I
- 35:43remember having to make one of the biggest decisions
- 35:45of my life. And there was a wise mentor in my
- 35:49life, a fellow pastor who was down the road a
- 35:52number of years, and he had mentored and loved
- 35:54me and helped me. And I had a huge decision to
- 35:57make. And I came to him and I asked him, what
- 36:00do you think I ought to do? And he was so wise,
- 36:03he understood what I needed most was to learn
- 36:06to trust God, step up to the plate, make a good
- 36:09decision, and believe that God could use me in
- 36:11that way. And I'll never forget his words. He
- 36:14said, Chip, you're a good man. You walk with
- 36:17God. I know you're going to seek him. And I know
- 36:20whatever decision you make will be a great one.
- 36:23And you know, it was just the confidence that
- 36:26I needed to step up and say, you know, God can
- 36:29use me. And I can make the call and I can trust
- 36:33him. Who needs a word of blessing, confidence,
- 36:37or affirmation from you? Why don't you give it
- 36:41and make their day? That's Chip Ingram and the
- 36:43end of today's program. Join us next time as
- 36:46we continue our series, Building Authentic Community,
