- 0:00[SPEAKER_04]: What has happened in friends welcome back to the sports card CEO Big Daddy Kern and Ham in the house today get you a cup of Joe there Kern Did he get another one?
- 0:18[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, it's on his way back again Let's go again There it is he did it
- 0:25[SPEAKER_02]: a 40-70 season and a season of life in the other and naturely baseball history from one of the Koenia Junior.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: There's a drive right on the Man of Heaven, the Man of Heaven, the Man of Heaven, a season that he is having.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_01]: He hits this one hard, he hits the Man of Heaven, like Trump, that's right to hold on.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: Well, so guys, my truck and this is a sports car C.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.E.EE.E.E.E.E.E.E.EE.E.EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
- 0:57[SPEAKER_03]: That's right.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_03]: Nice, bright and early Tuesday morning, cup of your.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_04]: We're going a little earlier today.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_04]: So we need the coffee, but it's all good.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to have a little summer stop in today.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_04]: I think our episodes of the summer, a little shorter.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_04]: We'll come pack a little to the point.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_04]: Everybody's got a lot going on.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_04]: And you just got back from a trip and a travel, but we will dive into that here shortly.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_04]: Appreciate everybody tuning in the list.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_04]: And thank you guys for kind of making sports car to see you home.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_04]: You know, it has been.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_04]: I've been a lot going on, I mean, just in life in general, you know, we're moving in on the year and a half of doing these episodes every week and the state consistent with that.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_04]: And we're talking even this week about, you know, kind of the days ahead and looking at, you know, programming and stuff like that.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_04]: We appreciate you guys sticking with us.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_04]: Thank you for sharing this out.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_04]: We got a ton of phenomenal feedback off a last week's episode had a blast interview and little Matt and getting some useful
- 1:51[SPEAKER_03]: You guys crushed it.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_03]: You texted me like so.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_03]: What do you think?
- 1:55[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, I haven't had a chance to listen yet.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, I'm playing, I'm playing right home.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_03]: I did.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_03]: I was really, I wouldn't say surprise, but it was a great episode.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_03]: It was great to listen to both of you.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean, we got a lot of cool feedback on that.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_04]: I think it was kind of neat, you know, I mean, because my story is really nothing without a little man, what he does the hobby and, you know, all three of us me, you and Bubba as well.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, we've all done, you know, had a lot of interaction there.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_04]: And it was, it was just a good, a good deal.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_04]: But nonetheless, man, good to be on with today, buddy.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_04]: I'll go ahead and.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_04]: eat off the roundtable piece.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_04]: So, man, it was a good week.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_04]: We got, like I said, a lot of good feedback off of the last week's episode.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_04]: It was really good for a little man.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_04]: I think to build some confidence, you know, it's very different doing a one take on, you know, a real versus being on a podcast for 30 minutes.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_04]: And I think for him that was a new challenge, you know?
- 2:43[SPEAKER_04]: and a good challenge.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_04]: So I was really excited for him to be able to experience that.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_04]: But that was good.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_04]: The interesting piece in right after that, he had a really challenging outing on the baseball field.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_04]: He, you know, pitches for his high school team, and there's summer ball, JV, stuff.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_04]: And Matthew has not pitched in a number of years.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it's been probably gosh, I guess.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_04]: Since he was 12, I mean, so he really hasn't pitched a lot.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_04]: And this year was his first year back, and he's just learning the mound, but he had a situation he'd probably come if we're saying this.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_04]: But he basically went in late in the game, up a couple runs, had a couple walks, gave up a couple hits, and it wasn't like awful outing, but I mean, you know, this court three runs pretty quickly, and he ended up getting pulled, team lost a game.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_04]: And he was just carrying the weight of that really heavy.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_04]: But I share that because I was watching him walk off the mound just absolutely defeated, you know, and just really struggling with it.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_04]: And I really felt like the Lord kind of put it on my heart.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_04]: He said, it's okay for your kid to struggle because it's going to make them better.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, a lot of times in life or in business or whatever, we don't want to go through difficult things because of the pain or the embarrassment or whatever.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_04]: But like those are the only things that can really mold us in sharpness, and so that kind of like my theme of the week, honestly, has just been thinking about, you know, everybody's got difficult stuff they go through.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_04]: Everybody has a story, everybody's got stuff they're challenged with, but really embracing those difficulties, as learning moments and opportunities and trying to stay kind of emotionally centered in the mid-development.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_04]: So that's the mindset and it's funny, I've actually got to go speak tomorrow to a bunch of entrepreneurs and small business owners in Raleigh and so I'm kind of bringing that energy if you will to the table to share with them.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_04]: So I'm looking forward to that on the card front.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_04]: We had a really, really good collection, interestingly enough, kind of come to us.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_04]: And just some stuff, I'll just flash it up on the screen here.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_04]: So this is a 1973, oh, that's not it.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_04]: Where do you go?
- 4:49[SPEAKER_04]: Is a 1973 Mike Schmidt rookie?
- 4:51[SPEAKER_04]: Super, super clean.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_04]: And then there's some like, there's an Andre Dawson rookie in there.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_04]: You've got the Ozzie Smith rookie in there.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_03]: You got the Henderson rookie in there.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_03]: Plus Stalja.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and it's very nostalgic and it was like really neat for me because I was like, man, I'm going to take the time to kind of go through this and honestly, as it relates to cards, it kind of reinvigorated a little bit.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_04]: And I want to talk a little bit later in the episode about the modern market and vintage market and how I've seen some interesting things there, but
- 5:19[SPEAKER_04]: but yes, so that's been fun.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_04]: And then other than that, man, we've got summertime fast approaching.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, we've got fanatics fast coming up in about three weeks.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_04]: And then we've got the national shortly after that.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_04]: We've got some media passes for both.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_04]: So I would actually put this out as a question to our
- 5:37[SPEAKER_04]: our audience and our listeners.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_04]: If there's specific type of content that you guys would like to see at fanatics faster than national, please hit me up directly on Instagram, at Hamhouse Sports, and let us know, you know, hey, this is in relation to the national content, because we're going to have, like I said, media passes and access and be able to do interviews and, you know, the show floor and all that kind of stuff.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_04]: So would love to hear your feedback, because I just don't want to create, you know, continual content of card deals, but I'd love to hear what you guys like to see.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_03]: All right, so I'll tell you what I'd like to see.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_03]: What would you like to see?
- 6:08[SPEAKER_03]: I'll message it to you later.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_03]: It's a little explicit.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_03]: I bet you would.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_03]: Now, just kidding.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_03]: But to touch on your point about seeing that, a Matthew, a little matter.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know why I call Matthew, but it matters as name.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_03]: little Matt struggling at the mound, you know, it's why I feel like it's so important to for a children, a kids to play competitive sports growing up because it builds character, you know, they go through those hard times.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_03]: Like it makes sense.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_03]: Like you're not going to go through hard times at business when you're 13 years old necessarily, you know, so like the only, you know, playing competitive sports is at least that's how I learned to
- 6:43[SPEAKER_03]: to actually compete and I learned how to lose and I learned how to win, you know, and I learned the feelings of both of them and brought that into the real world, too.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I truly think that the, you know, the child's experience playing competitive sports, you know, carries on into the real world and the business world.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, 100% and I mean, and you sports is so good for that reason.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_04]: And simultaneously, what we've made you sports into is this like, pinnacle of, you know, if we don't win, it's over kind of thing.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_04]: Like, there's a lot of pressure that comes with that that I've tried to learn to lead the kids to the game, you know, and like, I've got the twins right now.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_04]: And one of them decided he's like, I don't want to play baseball this summer.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_04]: And he's a great athlete, you know, right?
- 7:22[SPEAKER_04]: And it's like, it's okay, man, if you didn't play baseball, the summer of your 14 year old year, it's not the end of life.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_04]: You know, right, not the end of life.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_04]: So, anyway, that's that.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_04]: So, what about you, Rowan?
- 7:34[SPEAKER_03]: So, we were in LA last week visiting my brother-in-law and his wife and kids.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_03]: So, my kids' cousins.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_03]: And it was a good time.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_03]: So, I, I usually do, for those of you that don't know, I lived that there for eight years.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_03]: So, it was kind of, uh,
- 7:49[SPEAKER_03]: interesting being back, you know, my wife had asked me questions and I'd be like, like, act like I know something and it's like, she's like, that was like, like, it was like 15 years ago.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_03]: Like, the place is not there and he used to be the best restaurant, but it was a good time.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_03]: We took these, you know, I'd never, I hadn't been out at West for a while and there's these waymos, you know, waymos are.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_04]: I had no clue what's the wayma.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_03]: So a waymo is it's a self-driving car.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_03]: It's a robot car.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_03]: There's no drivers and they're all over the place there.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_03]: Those of you that live in LA, I guess Vegas too, probably notice them all the time you see them.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_03]: But it's essentially, I mean, they have cameras on the top and the side everywhere.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_03]: You know, and there's nobody driving the car.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_03]: Nobody in the car and you could take it as an Uber so the kids thought it was falling.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_03]: I thought it was cool We took up we took a bunch of them.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_03]: I mean we rented a car, but we had we took the way most for fun and it was It was fun at first and then it just became okay.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_03]: This is how you do it.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but it was cool actually It's nice to not I don't like robots replacing humans is as in the workplace typically but
- 8:54[SPEAKER_03]: you got to tell you they're safer drivers and all these all of us out there you know it's it's I felt that I'd ever felt safer no but it was it was it was a good time we had a lot of fun out there and now I'm back in the swing of things we're moving out to South Hampton this weekend for the summers you'll be out there now yeah yeah we're going out there Friday and we'll be out there for the entire summer we were out there this past weekend from Father's Day the open was going on don't that's right
- 9:21[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_03]: But, uh, I mean, from a card front, um, I'm laying low, man.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_03]: I'm laying low on the card front.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_03]: I haven't done haven't done much.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_03]: Again, selling where I can.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_03]: But I'm, I'm just keeping my eye out.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_03]: I'm keeping my eye out in the prospect world.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_03]: That's all.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_03]: I'm keeping up with baseball.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_03]: So I just want to make a quick announcement on the prospect club app because I've gotten several messages here.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_03]: So right now when you open up the app, there's a paywall there that says
- 9:51[SPEAKER_03]: On the bottom just so everybody knows you're not locked out of the app right now on the bottom there's a not now button click the not now button and it'll take you into the app right now what set up is I am going to be moving to a subscription base service and it will be either 499 per month or 3999 for the year.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_03]: When we, when I started this thing, it was originally free to download the app and full access then it was then I bumped it to 399 then I bumped it to 499.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_03]: That was genuinely the plan for it to stay at 499.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_03]: But as this thing is evolved over the last few weeks, I've been able to add more data.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_03]: And just so you guys know like the all the live data, the reason why we're able to have these push notifications in real time,
- 10:31[SPEAKER_03]: And all these lists of hot prospects daily through the week, they don't cost money.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_03]: They don't cost money.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_03]: The stuff isn't just free.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_03]: It's not like you just press the button that it's there.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_03]: Like you have to pay for this stuff.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_03]: There's firewalls and everything and cost associated with that.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_03]: That being said, that is not the reason why I'm moving to a subscription service.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_03]: The reason is is because
- 10:52[SPEAKER_03]: I'm trying to work with, I'm working with card ladder, trying to incorporate an integrate costum index and APIs within the app.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_03]: So you're not leaving the app to go to card ladder separately.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_03]: I'm hoping that everybody's favorites list and anybody they want to follow.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_03]: will have real card data, comp data for different parallels, different for wrong, graded, already incorporated on that player's page live from card letters.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_03]: You do not have to leave to go to card letter.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_03]: And that's up there in real time.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_03]: Now, you have to understand that I think that's a huge value ad to have been all in one place.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_03]: There's significant cost associated with that.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_03]: That I need to offset.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_03]: And so I apologize if there's anybody that has an issue
- 11:42[SPEAKER_03]: Reach out, not the 40 bucks, but I'll refund you your five dollars.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_03]: I'm happy too.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not trying to rip anybody off or this isn't a money grab is simply just to keep this thing from getting stale and to keep it and to keep it, you know, up to date.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, if you have an iPhone or the like you can afford $5 a month, but if you can't, I'll refund you your original $5 if you really want to.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_03]: But that's the reasoning.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not, this is not a money grab.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_03]: I don't need your $5.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_03]: I just I want to keep this thing up and running from not how to pocket on my end.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_04]: Well, that's the thing is like I think that some people don't understand like when you do app development like the amount of updates that you have to do because the technology is constantly changing like the demand on the, you know, kind of operational side of app development is just unbelievable.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_03]: It looks like you got me in and now you did it like that wasn't I but at a hundred percent see that But I want to make it clear that wasn't my plan sure it really wasn't my plan I have this opportunity come up with car ladder that I'm exploring and there's different avenues that I could go with them But now that that's that's going to be the significant cause and I think that is an added value add to most people If not all that are using this app I think they would want to have this and would be willing to pay for that
- 13:07[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, what I have charging now from the get-go, you know what I mean?
- 13:10[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I mean, if you really get honest about it, right?
- 13:12[SPEAKER_04]: Like if you're using the app the way it was intended to specifically focus on prospecting and card prospecting, you know, if you have and have desired from the beginning current to create an app that is kind of the one stop shop for prospecting, where it is the kind of
- 13:29[SPEAKER_04]: uh, it's the gathering of all information and then access to comp data and all that kind of stuff so that someone doesn't really have to go to three or four different apps in order to collect what it is.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_04]: Dude $5 a month.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_04]: If you're not making $5 a month prospecting, you know what I mean?
- 13:45[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_04]: I think doing it wrong.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_04]: He's for itself, right?
- 13:47[SPEAKER_04]: I think it is.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_04]: The idea is that.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_04]: you're creating a convenience service to help people accomplish what they could have accomplished previously but going to six or eight different locations to do it.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_04]: You know what I mean?
- 14:00[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_04]: And so and to do it in a streamlined way and to do it in a way that pushes it right to your phone.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_04]: So I mean again, that that makes absolute and complete total sense to me.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_04]: Like I know in my business with like you know insurance.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_04]: If I had a service every month that would can
- 14:18[SPEAKER_04]: certain emails and filter them based on, you know, priority and, you know, like, absolutely.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_04]: Because how much time do I spend going through, you know, the mean?
- 14:28[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_04]: And information to get what I need to get.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_04]: Like, so that's where technology's moving, but it does call something.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_04]: So current talk to me, are there any like, is there any baseball related content?
- 14:38[SPEAKER_04]: I know we've been predominantly a baseball podcast.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_04]: I'll be honest, you know, it's so busy.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_04]: I haven't really followed a lot of baseball, like what's going on in a baseball way?
- 14:44[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, well, we'll touch on that.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure most of everybody listening has heard of that the owners have.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_03]: made a proposal, the first proposal to the NLBPA, and it was quite the proposal.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I'm not going to dive too deep into it.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_03]: First off, because I think it's a first proposal with something that's extremely unlikely to happen.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_03]: But we'll touch on it in that the main points here were that there will be, there would be no more high school drafts and it would be an international draft.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_03]: Now,
- 15:16[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe very clear that first item, no high school drafts, I mean, obviously there's a lot of, a lot of things that come of that, not related to cards, but from a card perspective at Kills Bowman, Bowman's done.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_03]: Bowman is absolutely crush if that were to ever be a perupt, which I don't think it would be.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_03]: But Bowman would be crush.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, imagine, imagine Bowman draft with all 22 and 23
- 15:44[SPEAKER_03]: Like, you know, you're not buying these guys at a high school.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_03]: There'll be no prospecting prospecting would be done in the proposal.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_04]: You know, they make them go to college for a period of time.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_04]: Like, what's the requirement?
- 15:55[SPEAKER_04]: I don't even know, man.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_04]: I don't even know that's what I like.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't even die deep enough to like even like I didn't care.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_03]: And I was just like, this is not going to happen.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_03]: There's no chance.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_03]: So there's no point in sitting here.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_03]: you know, getting angry over, over, you know, a first proposal that was never going to happen, you know, but that would just be crazy.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_04]: I wonder why they proposed that, like, what's the impetus behind why would they want to do that?
- 16:17[SPEAKER_03]: I guess so they don't have to pay these young kids a substantial amount of money out of high school.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_03]: That's the only thing I could think of.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_03]: you know, I don't know.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I mean, you know, it saves them from paying these enormous signing bonuses.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, you know, baseball is unique in that way that I mean, occasionally you'll see the high school, the high school basketball drafty, you know, in your classic examples or, you know, Glebron and, you know, Kobe, you guys like that over the years, Garnet.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_04]: I don't even know if there's anybody that's done it more recently, but like most of the times now college is pretty much one year in college and then go pro.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_04]: You know, pretty pretty standard for Cooper Flag and you know, guys of that of that caliber.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_04]: And then the football is what they require you to go two years, I think, and play college football.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_04]: And then you think self.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_04]: But it's a baseball's this unique spot where you have, you know, a 17, 18-year-old talent that can kind of, you know, make a name for themselves and be drafted.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_04]: And you know, I don't know, I just, I feels like it's unique to baseball.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_04]: So why would they want to ruin it in the way?
- 17:18[SPEAKER_03]: it does feel unique to baseball like i i wouldn't see the point of sending the kid to college for one year playing with a metal bat for one year like i never understood the metal bat thing in college anyway like you're trying to get these kids ready for the pros and the first time to play with a wood bat is in the pros that doesn't be any sense to me that never made any sense to me either
- 17:38[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I was looking briefly at like, and we said it's a couple weeks ago, like baseball's kind of an all-you know, right now, that pre, you know, all-star break kind of situation.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_04]: And I was looking though, you know, there's only like 10 players in the major leagues that are batting over 300 right now.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_04]: Is that right?
- 17:55[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, there's only 10 players in the bigs, batten over 300, which again, I mean, traditionally they've always said like lifetime 300 average, but when you have 10 players, batten over three, I like it's a very strong pitcher dominated, a very, you know, environment right now.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_04]: And it's just interesting because baseball is a very funny game.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_04]: My wife, the other day joking, like she said something like, you know, if I never had to watch another inning a baseball, she played soccer and basketball, right?
- 18:21[SPEAKER_04]: And so it's a more methodical game.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_04]: you know strategy it's a kind of a grind you know and it that it feels like that right during this part of the season when you're like man these pictures are coming out doing their thing you've gotten you know ten batters batten over three hundred it seems like the home runs is slowed off you know there's a couple hot starts but like there's just it feels like it's kind of like again the doldrums of baseball and so I'm curious to our listeners and we've
- 18:51[SPEAKER_04]: Like, what keeps you guys sustained during the baseball role?
- 18:55[SPEAKER_04]: Like, what aspects of this, you know, yeah, you're in big rated.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think to your point, it is true, but like this year's specifically, especially there's a lot of fun.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_03]: There's a lot of like star power.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_03]: injured, you know, we got we got you got Trudge injured, you got Ellie injured, you got Trout on the I.L.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_03]: you got a Cunya out, you know, like there's a lot of star power that is out right now.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know, I'm not saying that's the reason, but it doesn't it certainly doesn't help, you know.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_04]: Well, and you've got a lot of there's a lot of yeah, there's a lot of young guys that are, you know, the mean like mix in it up and you know, I was looking for that.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah, but like James Wood, you know what I mean is he's crushing, you know, Kim and arrows playing well, Pete Crow's playing well, you know, McGonagal of course, you know, Corbin Carroll, some of these guys, like there's a lot of guys that are, you know, Jordan Walker still, you know, competing at a high level.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_04]: There's there's a lot of guys that are doing well, but there's not that just dynamically exciting thing, you know what I mean, that really gives the hobby a lift and and gives the
- 20:01[SPEAKER_04]: you know, even kind of a late season run, like it feels like it needs something to inject some vibrancy into it, right?
- 20:08[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_03]: I agree.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_03]: There are certain storylines that have at the, you know, towards the beginning of the season, that kept it going, you know, like there was like the Jordan Walker resurgence.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_03]: He's going to, he's probably going to be an all star this year, too, which is like a cool story.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, but like even James would absolutely crushing and combat, like that's not getting enough attention, you know what I mean?
- 20:30[SPEAKER_03]: It's just I hear you on that front.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, maybe I'm just maybe I'm just pissed because the Met's suck and I don't watch as much baseball.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that could be it.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a little sad actually that Mr. Nick's prayed.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I was going to ask about that.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_04]: Like we haven't even talked about it.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, your next problem.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_04]: You know NBA championship and hell yeah, and you missed the right.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_03]: I know I know it's the first team of mine that have won a championship that I can remember aside from aside from Syracuse basketball in 2003 with mello that I was there for but the meds one in 86.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_03]: I was two years old.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_03]: I don't remember that shit You know and the next year won a championship and I can't even go to the parade.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_03]: Although I don't even know if I would have went to the parade to be honest.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_03]: I think it was just looked like a disaster.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_04]: You could have just looked at your window with the pigeons and just watched it, you know.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_03]: I'd rather do that, so they're with like a pigeon on each filter.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_04]: You should be like a real of like, you know, you and the pigeons have an conversation about like, you know, what it was like to finally win a championship into your.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_04]: I will remember you.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_04]: Here we go.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_04]: A little stair in my glauquen.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_04]: And so you're speaking of kind of invigorating a little bit of juice into the hobby.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_04]: Fanatics this week made a big announcement that they are starting a new content channel from through fanatics collect and there are some notable podcasters and content creators that are now being sponsored by fanatics and they are putting this out on their channels.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_04]: one of them being Mojo, another one being King of Cards.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_04]: There was a whole list there, I didn't really see everybody, but they're trying to basically create a content stream for the hobby and, you know, interestingly enough, very similar to what we've been doing over the last, you know, 18 months and, you know, I saw that drop and send it over to you and I was just curious if you have any input on that.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, at first I was confused like what was going on and then I read a little bit more about it and I got it.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_03]: It made sense.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_03]: It got it.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_03]: It made sense.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know who any of those guys were.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_03]: You do.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know who these guys are like the influencers and stuff like Mojo.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know who that is.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_03]: So like they don't don't mean shit to me.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_03]: Like, but they don't mean anything to me.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't mean that disrespectfully.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_03]: They don't mean anything to me.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_03]: I assume people like deep in the hobby it does.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_03]: I guess it seems very like the topics for each of these guys seems like an extremely generic and I think the idea is probably to make it more, you know, mostly educational for people in certain, like they have somebody talking about card shows and how to navigate those, right?
- 23:05[SPEAKER_03]: They have somebody else discussing, I forget what one of the other topics was, but
- 23:09[SPEAKER_03]: I found that interesting to me, and I kind of just saw, like, I've been thinking for a while that eventually fanatics would have, like, I could picture fanatics having a live streaming 24-7 channel, you know, whether it's on, I don't know, whatever it might be, prying or cable or whatever it is that we just live streaming content.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_03]: And when we, so it's funny, because like when we first originally started this, like, you know, it was just for fun and everything, and that's things evolved.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, you know, it'd be awesome, would be to have fanatics start that and be the baseball podcast for fanatics.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_03]: Collector fanatics, you know, for the fanatics, regional sports network or the fanatics live broadcasting network.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_03]: So when I saw that, I was like, oh, damn, it feels like somewhat of a missed opportunity.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_03]: But I guess we weren't good enough to make the cut here.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I think we're a little niche for what that is.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_04]: Well, a little bit of the background.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_04]: So when we did start, there was a lot of energy out of the gate.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_04]: If you go back, like our fifth episode was actually interviewing Kevin Linane CEO of the collectibles arm, I think, is what his title is.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_04]: And we brought the Jackson Holiday debut patch on screen and talked about that.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_04]: That auction was ending.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_04]: And there was a lot of collaboration there.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_04]: McCourse, we interviewed Mike Mayhand, and at card C, I mean, a card headquarters,
- 24:29[SPEAKER_04]: you know last summer at the baseball all-star game and again had a great support from those guys and there were conversations about having with fanatics and us kind of being the sports car CEO kind of being a fanatic sponsored podcast there was talks about you know recording in the fanatic studios I mean that this was all stuff that we were talking about behind the scenes.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_04]: and again, it just, it never materialized, but they absolutely kind of embarked on this idea, which they probably had it before we were ever on the scene.
- 25:00[SPEAKER_04]: What's interesting is that, you know, specifically the two guys that I know, I've met both of them,
- 25:06[SPEAKER_04]: And they're great guys.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, they're they're always super kind of shows and stuff.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_04]: One is Mojo, which Mojo, dude, he's a rock solid dude.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I just I love he's got a great attitude.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_04]: He's just got great energy, but he's got like 85 to 88,000 followers on YouTube.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_04]: And then you got King of the cards who was kind of more on the boots on the ground at shows.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_04]: He does all these card deals.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_04]: He's got 330,000 followers.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_04]: So again, it's this idea that, you know, if they're going to collab, they collab with these content creators who already have these large channels, right?
- 25:36[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_04]: And these large followings and order to kind of get it out to that audience.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_04]: And so, you know, understood there and I'm going to think that's really.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_04]: It reminds me current when I wrote my book back in gosh 2014, 2015.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_04]: It was just me writing a book and I wrote a book and I sold like three or four thousand copies, you know, which for folks who write books, you kind of understand that very few books sell lots of copies, but we had great success very early on and so I was like, all right, let's write another book.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_04]: and I got a public system involved and I had a literary agent or whatever and we had the second book idea which it's not dead yet.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_04]: My second book idea was called no capes and it was this idea that superheroes wear capes, right?
- 26:17[SPEAKER_04]: And they're true identity is kind of your average joe and then they put a cape on to be like the superhero superpowers.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and it was this idea like in our life, like, you know, specifically as men, business men, it's like, we wear these different capes that try to make us seem like more than we are.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_04]: These different personalities, they're different personalities, different identities, right?
- 26:37[SPEAKER_04]: And I don't think it's super jazz because I was like, no capes.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_04]: and it's funny because there's a scene from like the Incredibles where the lady that builds her costumes, she's like, no capes.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_04]: But anyway, that was the concept.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_04]: And every place we shopped it to, they go, hey man, great, great, great idea.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_04]: You're just not big enough.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_04]: You need more.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_04]: That's it.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_04]: ego because you need more followers.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_04]: So the tip is we'll go by followers, go build followers.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_04]: And so then you start creating content every day.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, what's up guys?
- 27:08[SPEAKER_01]: This is Matt Ham, follow along, like, subscribe.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: Diddy, diddy, diddy, diddy, diddy.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_04]: And I was like, that's horseshoe.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not gonna do that.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not going to sell out to get followers just from the standpoint of building a brand so somebody will like me, you know?
- 27:21[SPEAKER_04]: And that's not selling out to just say, well, I'm content to not grow.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_04]: No, I'm just going to be me and if it grows, it grows, you know?
- 27:29[SPEAKER_04]: And it opportunities present themselves then great.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_04]: We burn with them.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_04]: And in this case, man, like, I don't have any qualms whatsoever, like it's like, you know what, dude?
- 27:38[SPEAKER_04]: We're authentic.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_04]: We're who we are.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_04]: I love our show and what we get to do.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_04]: And I hope they do well.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_04]: I think it shows that you're so much content being consumed in the space, and that's the real key.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_04]: If Panatics is getting into the game, it means that you can't do anything and watch it again.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's a good thing.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_03]: But I'm with you bro.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_03]: Like I I got to be myself man.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_03]: I can't I'm not one to sit there and be behind a camera like this and I got I'm that's not me.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_03]: That's not me.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_03]: I couldn't I couldn't do that just in general.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_03]: The fanatics.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_03]: You saw it like I just couldn't do that in general.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_03]: You know what I mean?
- 28:14[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, no, I get it man.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_04]: And again, like I say this and just to be abundantly clear, like fanatics has been super cool to us and very supportive.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_04]: We love fanatics and support everything that they're doing.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_04]: Just having a conversation, you know, about the reality of putting content out there or trying to hustle in cards or trying to build your business.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_04]: Like there's
- 28:35[SPEAKER_04]: always somebody that's going to be doing something similar or somebody that's going to be bigger and better or somebody.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_04]: And so this idea of like making yourself feel less than or you know, whatever, like, it's just, it's silly.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_04]: So don't fall into that, right?
- 28:49[SPEAKER_04]: But I think exactly the point being is as we were like, oh, well, dang, man, you kind of got left out of the, you feel left out of the party.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_04]: And at the same time, that's the thing, you know, like, that's not us.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_04]: That's what we are.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_04]: It's all good.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_04]: So hope it, hope it goes, you know, goes really well for them.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_04]: It's going to be at fanatics fast and, you know, look forward to doing everything that's content creators do, right?
- 29:10[SPEAKER_04]: You will be there creating content.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_04]: I will be there creating content.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_04]: Some kind of content.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know what it's going to be, but it's going to be.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_04]: So I had a little bit of a, you know, I feel like I've got a bit of a reputation now on the show of like getting on a rant.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_04]: And I don't want to get on a rant.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_04]: I'll keep it super brief.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_04]: But just something I want to mention, like, I've recognized recently.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_04]: There's just, there's a lot of, I think people get way too offended in the hobby without reason.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_04]: And I've just noticed, you know, little Matt does the majority of our deals.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_04]: And I have access to all the accounts that he has.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_04]: So people like, well, you know, that you're stunned.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, I'm over that by now.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_04]: Like,
- 29:45[SPEAKER_04]: I see what he says.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_04]: I see what's going on.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_04]: And let me let me explain this to you.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_04]: We mentioned in the last week's episode.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_04]: We bought a $10,000 Babe Ruth 1933 Gaudy from a fella.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_04]: And we bought it offline, you know, meaning not through an auction house or whatever.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_04]: We paid goods and services.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_04]: And the conversation was such that hey, like
- 30:05[SPEAKER_04]: We'll you do this number if you ship it overnight and the answer was yes, okay?
- 30:11[SPEAKER_04]: And so we do the deal and come to the table basically the card didn't get shipped that next day.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_04]: And little matches like, hey man, any update on shipping and the guys like, yeah, I didn't make it today.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_04]: I'll make it tomorrow.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_04]: And so you're like, okay, understandable.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_04]: At the same time, it's like it's $10,000 card, like
- 30:29[SPEAKER_04]: get it out that day.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_04]: Anyway, kind of let it slide the next day, late in the afternoon, get a message and the package was basically shipped USPS.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_04]: and a little map basically said hey man I thought we were over nighting this thing well next thing you know we get a refund of the money and the guy basically pulls the package and he said yeah man not gonna do the deal and I'm like wait a second we had sent you the money you had agreed to overnight it and why are you canceling and he said it's because he felt like we were being pushy on getting an overnight deal on the card interestingly
- 31:05[SPEAKER_04]: a couple days later and it must have sold because now the same card is up on eBay under a different handle for another $2,000.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_04]: Like so, we bought the card for $105, I think.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_04]: The guy was asking 12 not on eBay.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_04]: Pulled the card down, did the deal.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_04]: Next thing you know, the card goes back on eBay at $12,000.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_04]: Now the card's on eBay at $14,000 from another seller, right?
- 31:29[SPEAKER_04]: And so I just
- 31:33[SPEAKER_04]: I understand if communication is being pushed year or whatever, but like the lack of clarity in that deal was really concerning because it's like have the ability to go, hey man, hang on a second, like I'm not comfortable with this, I'm having second thoughts or whatever.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_04]: In an negotiation, if you feel like you got got, like, take your L, you know what I mean?
- 31:54[SPEAKER_04]: Like, you're based one, yeah, I think I understood it.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_04]: Let's like, what you're a grown person, like you made your decision, like, you're L. If you feel like you lost it, you know what I mean?
- 32:04[SPEAKER_04]: Like, I don't know.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_04]: And then I had a couple other situations where I just watched the way that some people were talking to Matthew on, you know, the message board and stuff.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_04]: And I was like, man, and again, if he ever did it, I would weigh in to him.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_04]: Because I'm like, we don't have enough time in life to be just disrespectful, you know?
- 32:23[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's kind of stuff for this man.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_04]: Man, it was kind of like, uh, going to need to bring that offer up little buddy and stuff.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_04]: Still, little stuff like just demeaning kind of like, you know, stuff like that, right?
- 32:34[SPEAKER_04]: And I always tell little matters like they don't, don't lowball people, you know.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, he's
- 32:38[SPEAKER_04]: pretty aggressive with his first offer, you know, and that's part of what he loves to do.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_04]: And I think he gets a lot out of the back and forth.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_04]: And sometimes people are like, hey, man, listen, I'm not going to bother with that.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_04]: But it was just the way that the people were talking.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_04]: It was like, I don't know, man, like, I don't want to ever be in a spot where I talk down to other people, you know?
- 32:58[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_04]: And a couple, couple, all of that little story with, I was literally driving home yesterday.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_04]: And, um,
- 33:05[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, we're in traffic, right?
- 33:06[SPEAKER_04]: And this guy behind me with a trailer and a big truck is just laying on his horn.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_04]: And I moved over and he rolled by me and just gives me the middle finger.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_04]: And he's like yelling at me through his window.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_04]: And I thought to myself, I was like, man, how angry does that fellow have to be in his life?
- 33:20[SPEAKER_04]: That he is allowing his emotions to boil over into screaming in his own car at somebody passing by.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_04]: And so I see all of that and makes me want to go into like a media therapy mode and like I need to help.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_04]: You don't need to help, man.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_04]: Like why are you all screwed?
- 33:37[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, anyway, so sorry for the rant.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_03]: Sorry for the rant.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_03]: No.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_03]: No, I like that.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_04]: Be aware that you're dealing with a lot of people going through a lot of different things.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_04]: Try to be patient, but at the same time and like don't get pushed around, you know, and don't get back in the mud.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_04]: You know, if somebody starts slinging mud on you, just there's no need to turn around and fling it back at him.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_04]: Just kind of ignored and move on,
- 33:58[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there's a lot of different personalities in the world in this hobby, but everywhere, you know, yeah, he's got to, you just kind of went dealing with people like it's not worth getting into with people.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_03]: It's just not, man.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_03]: It's just not, you know, a mentor, a mentor to Hyro.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, a mentor among one time told me he said, you know, if you're walking by a fence, and there's a little chihuahua behind the fence, there's just,
- 34:20[SPEAKER_04]: You know, just going at you.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_04]: You don't get down on your hands and knees and think you're facing the fence and go you stupid.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_04]: Chihuahua You just keep keep moving Yeah, and so I think there's a lot of that that you just got to be mindful of as your you know kind of on your own pathway But that said, man.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_04]: I want to kind of close up the show today current.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_04]: I'm gonna ask you why have you never gotten into vintage?
- 34:39[SPEAKER_03]: it's a great question.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_03]: Honestly, I don't really have a reason other than it just never excited me.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I guess I guess I like the, look, there were points where I went that I went through in collecting that I wanted to just get into vintage, right?
- 34:55[SPEAKER_03]: I wanted to get into
- 35:00[SPEAKER_03]: But even like vintage before me like you know like the vintage is I think of earlier than when I was born in 84 like obviously, but I just could never bring myself to actually buy the cards when it came time, you know, I just like the excitement of them of of being able to have the day to day.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_03]: I guess, you know, stock market move, you know, like I needed the, I liked the idea of this, you know, the price fluctuation and the risk involved.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_03]: And so, you know, anytime it, anytime I took interest in, in vintage and like I have a couple vintage cards, right?
- 35:37[SPEAKER_03]: But like like I have a Gaudy 33 Gaudy Ruth, like I have, I guess Frank Thomas is not considered vintage, but like I have some old Michael Jordan stuff.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if that's considered vintage either.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_03]: It's not really, but like I would love a Joe name with rookie.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_03]: I love a Tom Siva rookie.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_03]: Like not huge to Joe name with the rookie is big, but like I just could ever like if I have certain a lot of money to spend and I want to spend on something and it's cards like I just never could bring myself to spend it.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_03]: It's always felt like
- 36:06[SPEAKER_03]: Even though it's not, okay, I'm very, very clear.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_03]: It's not a dead asset.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_03]: It feels like it is to me because there's nothing currently going on that I can watch.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_03]: You know, like you almost have to, yeah, you just have to sit there and put it in a safe.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_03]: You know what I mean?
- 36:20[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I'm not flipping these things.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_03]: So you know what I mean?
- 36:22[SPEAKER_03]: Like you can't flip vintage like that in my opinion.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_03]: You can, if you're buying a certain, if you're looking in the right place, but you're buying for long term, which I would be buying, like, it's just sitting there in my safe.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_03]: Like, there's like, yeah, watch a game of this guy.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_03]: it's not exciting to me.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's it's a fair answer.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_04]: I appreciate that.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_04]: I think that sentiment is shared among a lot of folks.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_04]: It's as to why it's funny because when I first got started, you know, going back in the 80s, you know, like the oldest card I had was a 74 Hank Aaron when he broke the record.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_04]: And I was like, man,
- 36:54[SPEAKER_04]: This is awesome to have this old vintage card, you know, and I kept it in my collection.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_04]: Most of my collection was 80s when I when I re-dusted off the collection in the early 2000s and 20s when, you know, a little mat and I got going.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_04]: I had that 74 air in it.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_04]: That's the car is beat, man.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_04]: It was so old and just janky.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_04]: And I realized that like that car had no value.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_04]: Like it was a $5 card, you know.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_04]: And it was, I feel like there's a five-dollar card when I bought it, you know, in a main, it was like, what in the heck?
- 37:20[SPEAKER_04]: But I always loved, you know, my dad or her, my dad talk about Mickey Mannell, you know, when he was growing up as a kid and you heard those stories of my godfather, my dad talk about, oh, I had these mannell cards and I was a kid and I put him in my bike and, you know, that whole thing.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_04]: And so there's this lore with vintage cards where it was like super cool.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_04]: So we went after vintage, fairly heavily early in the game.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_04]: And you do well here and there, you know, but then you get into the modern game and it kind of reminds me of this so we've gotten about recently and when you have a boat one of the things you naturally do is you fish okay and you can ensure fish which is it's kind of calm and you you're casting and you're plugging for flounder for trout or you know the main is just really chill or you can go offshore to the Gulf stream and you can go fishing for blue marlin.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_04]: You know, and like this whole card hobby to me has really kind of started to, I'm seeing it through the lens of like other things like fishing, for example, vintage is kind of like this idea of, you know, you're insure it's safe, it's very calm, you know, to me, there's not a lot of,
- 38:26[SPEAKER_04]: action per se.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_04]: You can go after a whale and go get a high grade vintage if you want, but most of it's just kind of insure fishing.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_04]: And then you've got offshore fishing, which is this modern game dude, and it's just high money, money, and burning through gas, and catching billfish and stuff.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_04]: And so it's super interesting to me, and I'm thinking about my own self, and what do I really like to do?
- 38:49[SPEAKER_04]: And I told him that the other day I go, I'm sitting here looking at right now,
- 38:53[SPEAKER_04]: a shelf full of, you know, cards that man, I'd probably rather own a 1950s baseball card than that particular, like he bought this card.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_04]: I'll show this to you.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_04]: This is a LeBron James XRC refractor.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_04]: It's a top's finest refractors.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_04]: Number to 250 is LeBron James, I think, first, you know, printed card.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_04]: And again, to him, it's like, dude, that thing sick, you know, so LeBron rookie, number to 250 refractor,
- 39:22[SPEAKER_04]: It's like $7,500, I'm like, I don't know, man, I'd rather have a 1953 Mickey Manel.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_04]: You know what I mean?
- 39:29[SPEAKER_04]: It's a cooler-looking card.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_04]: And so I've been wrestling in my own heads.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_04]: I'd love to hear from our listeners.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_04]: Like, do you collect vintage and modern?
- 39:36[SPEAKER_04]: Like, is there a, is there a both and for you?
- 39:39[SPEAKER_04]: Is it just this idea of value?
- 39:42[SPEAKER_04]: Is it like current said, play in the market?
- 39:44[SPEAKER_04]: Is it the prospecting thing that keeps you going?
- 39:47[SPEAKER_04]: I'm genuinely curious to hear from our listeners
- 39:51[SPEAKER_04]: kind of keeps you rolling through the hobby.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_04]: But because at some point in time for us, it's like, okay, you can go make money on cards.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_04]: But like, is there really something that you want to be able to have long-term?
- 40:02[SPEAKER_04]: Or is it just about, you know, the hustle day and day out, kind of making it.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_04]: And so I'd love to hear some feedback from our listeners on that.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it'd be curious as well.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so all right, bro.
- 40:10[SPEAKER_04]: Well, listen, man.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to wrap up today and give you the opportunity to file thoughts for we close out that episode.

- 40:19[SPEAKER_04]: I do say travels as you guys head out to, you know, on the island and go out toward Amityville, watch out for the great white and Amityville.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_04]: And, and, and, and, and, and, and, and he out there, that many is out there.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_03]: Not in the hand, this, but it's on the way out.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_03]: Let's, yeah, it's stuff in County, I think.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_04]: That's what I thought.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_04]: I thought it was all out there.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_04]: However, all those movies, man, were filmed on my own.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_04]: It's just fine.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's right.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_03]: That's right.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_03]: That's right.
