- 0:19Speaker 1: have Benny Schuman from Minnesota who's actually.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Packing his bags and headed to Illinois.
- 0:24Speaker 1: So we are at the time of year now where
- 0:26Speaker 1: things are going to get more exciting. The opportunity is
- 0:29Speaker 1: likely going to increase. This is a very special window.
- 0:32Speaker 1: You've been sitting on the sidelines to feel like you're
- 0:34Speaker 1: behind the eight ball. Things are likely going to start
- 0:37Speaker 1: bouncing in your favor. There's a lot of change that
- 0:39Speaker 1: is going to happen over these seven days. There's going
- 0:42Speaker 1: to be a lot of sign that is laid down.
- 0:44Speaker 1: If we get a cold front. We're recording this a
- 0:46Speaker 1: little bit early, but if the weather cooperates and you
- 0:49Speaker 1: have an opportunity to potentially shoot a buck before things
- 0:52Speaker 1: go completely haywire in the month of November, there's a
- 0:55Speaker 1: really good chance you're going to have a big deer
- 0:57Speaker 1: show up this week on a scrape entre camera. So
- 1:01Speaker 1: grit down. This is going to be an exciting week
- 1:04Speaker 1: from here on out, it's gonna get a little bit better.
- 1:06Speaker 1: So I hope you guys enjoyed this week's episode of
- 1:08Speaker 1: Rough Fresh. As you know, Roughresh is brought to you
- 1:11Speaker 1: by land dot com, the leading online real estate marketplace
- 1:13Speaker 1: to find your perfect rural, recreational, agricultural, or hunting properties
- 1:18Speaker 1: here in the US. We are going to kick things
- 1:20Speaker 1: off here with Aaron Blyse is a little bit longer
- 1:22Speaker 1: interview because there's a lot of good information that I
- 1:24Speaker 1: think will help you guys as you developed a plan
- 1:27Speaker 1: for the next seven days.
- 1:28Speaker 2: So here we go.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Here's Aaron Blyseie all right, First up on the line,
- 1:36Speaker 1: we have Aaron Blisee. Aaron always finds a lot of
- 1:39Speaker 1: success in the month of October, in the October little
- 1:42Speaker 1: when everyone else struggles. Everyone else is saying that deer
- 1:44Speaker 1: aren't moving, it's too hard. I'm just gonna sit on
- 1:46Speaker 1: the couch and watch football. You over the last few years,
- 1:49Speaker 1: it's like October is your time to shine.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Man.
- 1:52Speaker 3: I don't know what the deal is, I guess. I well,
- 1:57Speaker 3: first of all, thanks for having me on, Jake. I
- 1:59Speaker 3: appreciate it and getting to catch up with you and everything.
- 2:01Speaker 3: But I will say, you know, since twenty twenty one
- 2:04Speaker 3: October thirteenth, that's kind of been my day, I guess.
- 2:08Speaker 3: But you know, I really feel like that like quote
- 2:11Speaker 3: unquote October lull the last I would say, probably the
- 2:15Speaker 3: last five. You know, about five years ago I started
- 2:17Speaker 3: looking into like my cameras really started having deer like
- 2:21Speaker 3: good bucks that I'm looking for daylight on scrapes. It
- 2:24Speaker 3: seems like it seems like in that timeframe even this
- 2:27Speaker 3: year with the deer I did kill just a couple
- 2:29Speaker 3: of days ago that he like he has a running
- 2:35Speaker 3: mate with him, and then all of a sudden in
- 2:37Speaker 3: this timeframe, a flip switches. He's opening scrapes and he
- 2:41Speaker 3: doesn't have a running mate with him, so it's like
- 2:43Speaker 3: he's almost starting to put you know, they're starting to
- 2:46Speaker 3: feel a type of way I feel like, and you're
- 2:48Speaker 3: starting to get these deer almost like in a sense
- 2:51Speaker 3: of like how the later October is like they're starting
- 2:54Speaker 3: to move a little bit more and in.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Daylight a little bit more that's what I see.
- 2:58Speaker 3: And I've been able to capitalize a couple of years,
- 3:02Speaker 3: three different times, you know, in the last couple of
- 3:04Speaker 3: years on the same.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Type of deal.
- 3:08Speaker 3: But the window is really small, like I'm saying two
- 3:10Speaker 3: three days. It seems like, you know, later October could
- 3:13Speaker 3: be eight days, you know, it could.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Be a little bigger. But this is like a real
- 3:17Speaker 2: tight window.
- 3:18Speaker 3: And if you can get in there and get the
- 3:19Speaker 3: right conditions, I feel like I've done that a couple
- 3:22Speaker 3: times in it the stars can align.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Man.
- 3:24Speaker 1: But we're going to dive into that because I think
- 3:26Speaker 1: if if the window is only three days, you know,
- 3:28Speaker 1: for the middle part of October, and it's much wider
- 3:30Speaker 1: for the later part of October, we want to try
- 3:32Speaker 1: to help everyone capitalize on that. But before we get
- 3:34Speaker 1: into this, I've been torturing all the guests with the
- 3:37Speaker 1: trivia questions, So yours is going to be a little
- 3:40Speaker 1: bit different here. So Michigan Pennsylvania, right, those are two
- 3:43Speaker 1: states that come to mind. There's a ton of ton
- 3:46Speaker 1: of hunters in both states. So my question for you
- 3:50Speaker 1: is who has more gun hunters, Michigan or Pennsylvania. And
- 3:55Speaker 1: then I'm gonna ask the same thing for archer, and
- 3:56Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you how many of each.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, that's a great question. Boy, I'm gonna
- 4:03Speaker 3: have to say that it's Michigan.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with Michigan. With gun hunters, Okay, you're
- 4:10Speaker 1: gonna be shocked. Here in Pennsylvania, there is six hundred
- 4:13Speaker 1: and eighty nine thousand gun hunters in the state of Michigan.
- 4:18Speaker 1: There's five hundred and seventy nine thousand, So I mean,
- 4:21Speaker 1: still hass.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Of an amount, but so many people.
- 4:23Speaker 1: One hundred and ten thousand hunter delta between the two
- 4:27Speaker 1: you know, let's say one point one and some change
- 4:30Speaker 1: million gun hunters between those two states, which is just
- 4:33Speaker 1: absolutely crazy. So I'll ask you the same question. So
- 4:36Speaker 1: for bow hunters, who has more Michigan or Pennsylvania. Knowing
- 4:40Speaker 1: knowing that stat now, oh.
- 4:42Speaker 3: My gosh, I think I'm gonna stay with Michigan. I
- 4:44Speaker 3: think I'm gonna go with Michigan on this one.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Okay, you are correct. There's three hundred and twenty two
- 4:49Speaker 1: thousand bow hunters in the state of Michigan and there
- 4:53Speaker 1: are two hundred and sixty five thousand in the state
- 4:56Speaker 1: of Pennsylvania. And just for folks to get an idea,
- 4:59Speaker 1: like I just flip the page here, Kansas thirty three
- 5:02Speaker 1: thousand to put that in respective, yes.
- 5:05Speaker 3: You know, and it's like I even think about Iowa too, like,
- 5:09Speaker 3: you know, the the zone in the county that I
- 5:12Speaker 3: hunt in Iowa, I don't even know what the number is,
- 5:16Speaker 3: but there are like more bull hunters in the state
- 5:21Speaker 3: of Michigan then people live in that county. Like it's
- 5:25Speaker 3: you know, and I would even probably loop in a
- 5:27Speaker 3: couple counties around there. It's wild just how the population,
- 5:31Speaker 3: you know, with Pennsylvania and Michigan.
- 5:32Speaker 2: There's such rich tradition there.
- 5:34Speaker 3: I love to see it, you know, I really do,
- 5:36Speaker 3: because I still get really thrilled on the deer that
- 5:39Speaker 3: I get to hunt, and uh, you know, so it's
- 5:41Speaker 3: still running strong, which is good. I'm gonna guess what
- 5:44Speaker 3: is Wisconsin third or fourth right in there somewhere.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Let's just I'll.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Flip over here, let me find it really quickly. Wisconsin
- 5:50Speaker 1: obviously a very rich tradition state when it comes to that.
- 5:54Speaker 1: But Wisconsin as six hundred and nineteen thousand gun hunters
- 5:59Speaker 1: and two hundred fifty three thousand bow hunters.
- 6:01Speaker 2: I mean Michigan, And yes, I don't.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Have the full spreadsheet of all of them, but yeah,
- 6:05Speaker 1: those are three states that come to mind when it
- 6:07Speaker 1: comes to the deer camp and tradition and everything else.
- 6:10Speaker 1: But looping back to knocking down an awesome buck in Michigan,
- 6:15Speaker 1: you were, you know, one of three hundred some thousand
- 6:17Speaker 1: bow hunters had success here. Man, what how did so
- 6:22Speaker 1: just dive into a little bit more so? I mean,
- 6:23Speaker 1: I feel that time of the year it's a little
- 6:26Speaker 1: there's a lot of people that just ultimately kind of
- 6:27Speaker 1: struggle or kind of have like a melancholy approach to
- 6:30Speaker 1: deer hunting where it's like, yeah, you know, I don't know,
- 6:33Speaker 1: you seem to be very methodical with that approach. So
- 6:35Speaker 1: kind of what made you key in on what was
- 6:37Speaker 1: the feature that you set up? I mean this kind
- 6:39Speaker 1: of break down the tactics or I guess the nuts
- 6:44Speaker 1: and bolts of how it came together. Yeah, so real quick,
- 6:47Speaker 1: last year, he was you know, I knew about him
- 6:50Speaker 1: last year and he wasn't you know, he was like
- 6:53Speaker 1: just kind of an up and comer.
- 6:54Speaker 2: You know. I felt he was a really good two
- 6:57Speaker 2: year old.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I felt just had a lot of promise, but I
- 6:59Speaker 3: never seeing him from on the hoof one.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Time last year.
- 7:02Speaker 3: But I did have a lot of camera pictures and
- 7:06Speaker 3: videos of him, but he really wasn't on the radar,
- 7:09Speaker 3: to be honestly, So coming into this year, he showed
- 7:12Speaker 3: up and you know, and he was still there, and
- 7:14Speaker 3: it was like, man, he's really made a big jump,
- 7:16Speaker 3: and you know, I was just super excited to get
- 7:20Speaker 3: after him. And I figured he was a three year old,
- 7:22Speaker 3: but he was just such a big body deer that
- 7:25Speaker 3: I just love those big body deers so and honestly,
- 7:28Speaker 3: he's probably the biggest deer I.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Have to hunt this year on any farm in Michigan.
- 7:32Speaker 3: So I'm like, well, I'm gonna put a lot of
- 7:33Speaker 3: time into him, but I will say the biggest common
- 7:36Speaker 3: denominator on and how I got to kill him early
- 7:40Speaker 3: like this is that the farm is corn this year,
- 7:44Speaker 3: so the standing corn really played a big role. I
- 7:46Speaker 3: did put in two acres of food plot. So basically,
- 7:51Speaker 3: when the corn stops, I took twenty four feet from
- 7:54Speaker 3: the farm field to the timber, and I aligned twenty
- 7:57Speaker 3: four feet all the way around the farm of food
- 8:01Speaker 3: and I used the vitalized stuff and I did the
- 8:05Speaker 3: night tribute in the spring and then came to the
- 8:07Speaker 3: carbon load and everything. So that was like the biggest
- 8:10Speaker 3: common denominator because which I didn't know at the time,
- 8:13Speaker 3: but knowing looking back now, you know, I encountered this year.
- 8:16Speaker 3: I hunted him seven times. It's the only farm I've
- 8:18Speaker 3: hunted this year. I hunted him for seven times and
- 8:21Speaker 3: I encountered him five times.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:23Speaker 3: And every time I seen him, he was just like
- 8:26Speaker 3: he would never break that sixty yard you know, barrier,
- 8:31Speaker 3: but like every time I seen him, I feel like
- 8:33Speaker 3: he's never seen a human before. So my entry and
- 8:36Speaker 3: exit really was really key in this, and so I
- 8:42Speaker 3: think the biggest common denominator. We had a huge acorn
- 8:45Speaker 3: crop this year. I don't have a ton of acorns
- 8:47Speaker 3: on this farm, there are some, but he and he
- 8:49Speaker 3: had three, well two for sure, different beds for south
- 8:53Speaker 3: and east winds because that's what we had. And that's
- 8:55Speaker 3: that's kind of what I what I kind of honed.
- 8:58Speaker 2: In on there.
- 8:58Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean that was the biggest thing, being
- 9:01Speaker 3: able to and then laying off the farm like there
- 9:03Speaker 3: was you know, I hunted him the first two nights
- 9:06Speaker 3: a season, and I laid off him for like five
- 9:07Speaker 3: days because I'm like, well, I'm really want to like
- 9:10Speaker 3: methodically just kind of like go in when I'm be
- 9:13Speaker 3: really patient.
- 9:14Speaker 2: None of that's hard for me, but really be patient.
- 9:16Speaker 2: And it really paid off.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Yeah, so you hunted seven times, he's seen him five times,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and you know, it sounds like there were semi close encounters.
- 9:25Speaker 1: What was he feeding in that green food source adjacent
- 9:28Speaker 1: to the grain or do you think he was betted
- 9:30Speaker 1: in the corn or betted on a ditch or a hedgerow.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I'm trying to picture kind of what it is in
- 9:34Speaker 1: my head here and I'm kind of piecing it together.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:37Speaker 3: So actually night number one, I went in and I
- 9:40Speaker 3: bumped him out of his bed. He was thirty yards
- 9:42Speaker 3: off my walking trail and I was doing a hanging
- 9:44Speaker 3: hunt that night. Well, that kind of like gave me
- 9:47Speaker 3: another card to you know what he was playing. Well,
- 9:51Speaker 3: we had some east wins to start the year and
- 9:54Speaker 3: or some north northeast winds, and he was betting on
- 9:59Speaker 3: some set aside. There was some set aside coming from
- 10:02Speaker 3: like the timber. There was like a ten foot you know,
- 10:05Speaker 3: ship with set aside, and then the green source and
- 10:07Speaker 3: then the grain and on those east winds the way
- 10:11Speaker 3: the farm lays out.
- 10:12Speaker 2: He was betting on and just inside.
- 10:14Speaker 3: The timber on a little knoll, and he was bulletproof
- 10:17Speaker 3: there he was looking into the timber. He had the
- 10:20Speaker 3: wind coming over his back from the grain, and he
- 10:23Speaker 3: had a great escape route. And I bumped him that night,
- 10:25Speaker 3: thought it was over. Actually kept going in. I did
- 10:28Speaker 3: a I was thinking bump and dump kind of thing.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Well I had.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Actually he did come out last night and I saw
- 10:33Speaker 3: him at sixty yards, so that was his east wind bend.
- 10:38Speaker 3: But then we started getting some south winds and he
- 10:42Speaker 3: shifted to the corn a lot like. So he had
- 10:46Speaker 3: a sea of corn and he was betting in the
- 10:48Speaker 3: middle of nowhere, in the sea of corn. And two
- 10:51Speaker 3: times that I hunted him my walking path through the
- 10:54Speaker 3: corn through a windrow. I had to walk by him
- 10:57Speaker 3: as he was betted somewhere around me, and I never
- 11:00Speaker 3: spooked him. He walked over my boot path twice, wow,
- 11:05Speaker 3: to get to the green in those So he was
- 11:09Speaker 3: he was, he was shifting beds. But this deer's core
- 11:11Speaker 3: area was forty acres or less. Like he was so
- 11:15Speaker 3: tight and hold up so tight right there. And ultimately
- 11:19Speaker 3: I think that's what helped too. But the entry and
- 11:21Speaker 3: exit was was really key there. Yeah, no, I think
- 11:24Speaker 3: that's that's super helpful. And so when it came together,
- 11:29Speaker 3: what was the setup for that evening and just kind
- 11:32Speaker 3: of the breakdown, because I mean, it's pretty awesome to
- 11:35Speaker 3: knock down your target bucket October thirteenth, Like that's you're
- 11:38Speaker 3: doing something right. It doesn't typically happen by accident at
- 11:40Speaker 3: that time of year.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:42Speaker 3: So well, actually to go back a week before I was,
- 11:47Speaker 3: I did a hanging hunt on him on where I
- 11:50Speaker 3: hunted him on opening night. When I was getting into
- 11:53Speaker 3: the tree, I tore my moniscus. So that was a
- 11:56Speaker 3: bad night. And I actually did encounter him that night too,
- 12:00Speaker 3: and then so I did I hunted the next morning,
- 12:03Speaker 3: kind of moved in tighter, never seen him, but then
- 12:05Speaker 3: to kind of go to the kill night. That day,
- 12:08Speaker 3: I went to the doctor to get all this stuff
- 12:10Speaker 3: done and found out it actually was torn at two
- 12:12Speaker 3: o'clock that day and I'm like, well, I had all
- 12:14Speaker 3: the stuff in the truck, I'm going to the farm.
- 12:18Speaker 3: My plan was is to walk through the corn no
- 12:20Speaker 3: wind at all, but it was out.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Of you know, it was it was a south wind.
- 12:24Speaker 3: It was a southwest when it actually my wind was
- 12:26Speaker 3: blowing at him where he was bedded. But in that corn,
- 12:30Speaker 3: you know a lot of that wind can do some
- 12:32Speaker 3: funky stuff, and I think it really helped me out.
- 12:34Speaker 3: But when I was walking in that night, I cut
- 12:37Speaker 3: a big track and I thought it was his track
- 12:39Speaker 3: coming out of the corn. And I'm like, I thought
- 12:40Speaker 3: to myself, I'm like, maybe he's already kind of come
- 12:42Speaker 3: through here, but I'm still gonna try it. So I
- 12:46Speaker 3: got in that night, and you know, that was the
- 12:49Speaker 3: key with the entry and exxit, and I will say,
- 12:50Speaker 3: I'm gonna go back the one. I encountered him five
- 12:53Speaker 3: out of seven sits, so one night, I think it
- 12:55Speaker 3: was encounter.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Three or four.
- 12:57Speaker 3: He he came out into the green source and I
- 13:02Speaker 3: waited a long time after dark until I watched him
- 13:05Speaker 3: walk off. And that's something that I think a lot
- 13:08Speaker 3: of people don't really take into consideration, is the exit
- 13:11Speaker 3: has to be just as good, if not better, as
- 13:13Speaker 3: the entry, you know, when you get pinned in, and
- 13:16Speaker 3: I had to. I had I waited a while. I'm
- 13:19Speaker 3: talking maybe forty five minutes to an hour before I
- 13:22Speaker 3: could lose him.
- 13:23Speaker 2: And binocular light.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Basically before I snuck out, And actually I didn't walk
- 13:28Speaker 3: through the corn. I walked right through the plot all
- 13:30Speaker 3: the way back. Because of where he went, I couldn't
- 13:33Speaker 3: go in the corn. So it was just you know,
- 13:35Speaker 3: those things go through your head of like, man, he
- 13:37Speaker 3: could come out and get my boot track and then
- 13:39Speaker 3: backtrack me to this blind and but that's what I
- 13:42Speaker 3: had to do. And it really paid off because every
- 13:45Speaker 3: time I seen him, he's like, didn't even know I
- 13:47Speaker 3: existed kind of thing. So, uh, tearing my meniscus. I
- 13:51Speaker 3: was kind of like, uh, confined to a box blind
- 13:54Speaker 3: octagon box bind you shoot a bow out of well
- 13:57Speaker 3: in this in this plot as it kind of turns
- 14:01Speaker 3: around the timber, so I have like a square piece
- 14:03Speaker 3: of timber and then the food kind of like turns
- 14:06Speaker 3: right here. It's like a it's like an inside corner.
- 14:08Speaker 3: I had a blind right here facing like a tear
- 14:10Speaker 3: drop of timber if that yeah, you know.
- 14:14Speaker 2: And I had a scrape tree there.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Well, it was perfect to be able to It's like
- 14:18Speaker 3: a Mark Drewy thing, you know, walk through the corn,
- 14:20Speaker 3: pop up the blind and then get out at night
- 14:22Speaker 3: and going through the corn.
- 14:23Speaker 2: So it was like, really really nice to be able
- 14:26Speaker 2: to do that.
- 14:27Speaker 3: And that night I got in, I cut his track
- 14:30Speaker 3: and saw deer early. It was the last night of
- 14:32Speaker 3: the Red Moon. I am a Red Moon guy. I'm
- 14:35Speaker 3: a Moon guy, But I don't think it's the end
- 14:37Speaker 3: all be all. I just think it's another common denominator
- 14:39Speaker 3: that might be able to get a deer that you're
- 14:41Speaker 3: looking for up on his feet a little earlier. Peak
- 14:45Speaker 3: times were like seven forty that night, so it was
- 14:47Speaker 3: actually after shooting light and saw deer early. Didn't see
- 14:52Speaker 3: anything for two hours, and I was watching some doze
- 14:54Speaker 3: down one side and I looked over and he was
- 14:57Speaker 3: popped out of the corner at forty yards already, and
- 14:59Speaker 3: it was a little, you know, a little after seven,
- 15:02Speaker 3: and I'm like, holy crap, it's him. And this is
- 15:04Speaker 3: the fifth encounter I had with this year. I'm like,
- 15:06Speaker 3: how I'm like, when is my luck gonna run out?
- 15:08Speaker 3: That's kind of what I'm thinking, Like this never happens
- 15:11Speaker 3: to me, you know, And he was kind of starting
- 15:15Speaker 3: to work away a little bit. I actually went to
- 15:17Speaker 3: full draw on him one time and he was at
- 15:19Speaker 3: forty four yards and I'm like, no, let's just I
- 15:23Speaker 3: was fully like accepting if I don't get a shot
- 15:27Speaker 3: at this year tonight, I'm okay with that because I've
- 15:29Speaker 3: seen him so much and there's so much of season left.
- 15:32Speaker 3: You know, before I probably would have forced something, and
- 15:35Speaker 3: I'm like, let's not do that. And but I was
- 15:39Speaker 3: fighting the sun going down too, is fighting all that.
- 15:43Speaker 2: It's darker in the blind. You know that you're playing
- 15:46Speaker 2: that game.
- 15:47Speaker 3: And so I waited probably five six minutes, and he
- 15:52Speaker 3: turned and he's starting to walk kind of to me.
- 15:54Speaker 3: And he got to a point where I'm like, okay,
- 15:56Speaker 3: I think I can take a shot there. And he
- 15:59Speaker 3: he went. He went broadside eating he was going to
- 16:02Speaker 3: come into a scrape tree.
- 16:03Speaker 2: I had a scrape tree right there. He was just
- 16:04Speaker 2: kind of making his way.
- 16:05Speaker 3: But I will say three, I think it was three
- 16:08Speaker 3: out of the five encounter or no, two out of
- 16:10Speaker 3: the five encounters.
- 16:10Speaker 2: He had a running mate with him. Well, he slowly
- 16:14Speaker 2: lost that running mate.
- 16:15Speaker 3: And the morning that I shot him, I finally got
- 16:18Speaker 3: him on camera opening up a scrape. It was the
- 16:20Speaker 3: most rut I guess, you know behavior I've seen him do.
- 16:26Speaker 3: He came into a scrape that hadn't been open and
- 16:28Speaker 3: actually destroyed it, and so he was kind of getting
- 16:32Speaker 3: to feel a different way. And when I got that
- 16:34Speaker 3: that morning, I'm like, we're dealing with a different animal now,
- 16:37Speaker 3: Like he's gonna switch thee yeah, the bed to food.
- 16:41Speaker 3: The pattern might be changing really quick here. And where
- 16:46Speaker 3: I actually got that picture was a ways away from
- 16:48Speaker 3: where I ended up killing him. He was going off
- 16:50Speaker 3: the farm, so I'm like, you know, maybe he's not
- 16:52Speaker 3: gonna be there anyway. So he's working into me and
- 16:56Speaker 3: he gets to a point he's you know, fully broadside
- 16:58Speaker 3: and eating away and I put the pin on him.
- 17:00Speaker 3: It was thirty eight yards and shot him and rest
- 17:04Speaker 3: is history.
- 17:05Speaker 2: I love it.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of brilliant key lessons there.
- 17:08Speaker 1: One of them is not not forcing it, and you know,
- 17:10Speaker 1: you end up getting a better shot opportunity. I think
- 17:12Speaker 1: that's something that a lot of people should have in
- 17:13Speaker 1: the back of their mind, you know, throughout the fall.
- 17:17Speaker 2: And the other one is not having a rigid plan
- 17:19Speaker 2: on your entry or.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Exit too, because I feel like a lot of people like,
- 17:22Speaker 1: this is my entry and this is my exit, Like
- 17:24Speaker 1: that is rigid. That is the rules, and I don't
- 17:27Speaker 1: break the rules, and like you know, you had to
- 17:28Speaker 1: play an audible, which seemed to, you know, play into
- 17:31Speaker 1: your favor, you know, A couple of days later on.
- 17:33Speaker 2: The next few months.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I will say that one night that I there's
- 17:37Speaker 3: one night that I encountered him. He came out the
- 17:40Speaker 3: same same runway out of the corn that I ended
- 17:42Speaker 3: up killing him on, and he goes in the timber
- 17:45Speaker 3: and I'm like, I can't go through the plot now,
- 17:47Speaker 3: I have to go by where he was. It started
- 17:49Speaker 3: porn Rain, and I'm like, it's dark as heck. I
- 17:52Speaker 3: don't want to use a head lamp because he's he's
- 17:53Speaker 3: in the timber. He's within one hundred yards of me,
- 17:56Speaker 3: and I'm like, porn Rain. I'm like, I do not
- 17:58Speaker 3: want to go back to this corn there, And you know,
- 18:00Speaker 3: Tormentiscus too, some hobbling everywhere, and I'm like, so I
- 18:05Speaker 3: got in the corn, I get out of that corn.
- 18:06Speaker 3: I looked like a wet bear.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Like I am just.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Stopping wet, you know. And I'm like, this is what
- 18:13Speaker 3: you got to do, though, you know. And the next
- 18:15Speaker 3: Nightey does this or not. The next night, but the
- 18:17Speaker 3: next time I hunt him does the same path, and
- 18:19Speaker 3: I'm like Okay, that really it was a light bulb.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Thing that really that really worked.
- 18:24Speaker 3: And on a deer like that, you know, I think
- 18:27Speaker 3: he was a three year old, possibly a four year old,
- 18:29Speaker 3: but with a caliber of deer like that in this area,
- 18:33Speaker 3: those are those are the things you have to do
- 18:35Speaker 3: to be able to kill that. And the other thing
- 18:38Speaker 3: I want to say, going in that night there was
- 18:40Speaker 3: hardly any wind, so walking through the corn was really loud.
- 18:43Speaker 2: It took me. I had to go about three hundred yards.
- 18:45Speaker 3: It took me forty minutes to go three hundred yards
- 18:48Speaker 3: because I'd only walk two or three steps in the
- 18:51Speaker 3: corn to make sure I wasn't hitting any corn to
- 18:54Speaker 3: make and I had to walk right by him.
- 18:56Speaker 2: So that ended up working as well. That's a really
- 19:08Speaker 2: good piece of advice.
- 19:08Speaker 1: So it's October twenty second now, and you already have
- 19:12Speaker 1: a Michigan buck down, and you had mentioned that you're
- 19:15Speaker 1: headed to Iowa, and so you know, I think the
- 19:19Speaker 1: I guess the approach is probably somewhat similar. So October
- 19:22Speaker 1: twenty second to the twenty ninth, I feel is a
- 19:24Speaker 1: really exciting time to run trail cameras, to be in
- 19:27Speaker 1: the woods like it's it's time, Like, if you've been
- 19:29Speaker 1: sitting on the sidelines, it's time to get serious and
- 19:33Speaker 1: get going. So what are you specifically most excited about
- 19:37Speaker 1: or what are you keen in on. Obviously it's an
- 19:39Speaker 1: out of state hunt, so your style might be a
- 19:41Speaker 1: little bit different. But what has he fired up here
- 19:43Speaker 1: for the next seven days other than the dates and
- 19:46Speaker 1: other being in Iowa too.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you nailed both of them. The dates are
- 19:50Speaker 2: really good and we're in Iowa.
- 19:51Speaker 3: So what's really got me excited about it is, actually
- 19:54Speaker 3: is this farm.
- 19:56Speaker 2: I've never set foot on it.
- 19:57Speaker 3: I was going to go out and scout at this spring,
- 19:59Speaker 3: but I did, and I have a buddy that lives
- 20:01Speaker 3: there that kind of helped me out or actually not
- 20:03Speaker 3: kind of helped me out a lot with this. I
- 20:05Speaker 3: sent cameras out to him. The cameras have all died.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Like I am literally going into this with a clean state.
- 20:12Speaker 3: That is the exciting part to me, because I don't
- 20:14Speaker 3: I almost wish I didn't set cameras out there because
- 20:17Speaker 3: I don't want to be like that mental state of like,
- 20:19Speaker 3: oh there's nothing to hunt, or I want like so
- 20:22Speaker 3: I have no idea my plan for the next seven
- 20:26Speaker 3: days is the weather.
- 20:27Speaker 2: The Red Moon is hitting on.
- 20:29Speaker 3: I think the twenty third or twenty four, so that
- 20:32Speaker 3: is both of my Iowa trips that I've planned this
- 20:35Speaker 3: year are around the Red Moon. It's the first time
- 20:38Speaker 3: I've ever done that. And the weather, we're looking at
- 20:43Speaker 3: mid to upper sixties as a high and then we're
- 20:46Speaker 3: looking at mid forties to low fifties as a low.
- 20:49Speaker 3: So I don't mind the weather. It could be a
- 20:53Speaker 3: lot worse. We could be in eighties and sixties in
- 20:56Speaker 3: as a low. I don't mind the weather at all.
- 20:59Speaker 3: My plan is to hunt, you know, like I normally
- 21:03Speaker 3: would end of October and you nailed it the scrapes.
- 21:06Speaker 3: My plan is to get there and do speed tour,
- 21:10Speaker 3: just kind of a delicate speed tour, find as many
- 21:13Speaker 3: scrapes as I can. I might even do some mock scrapes,
- 21:15Speaker 3: and I'm gonna deploy cameras. The cameras need to be moved,
- 21:18Speaker 3: and I want to get an inventory. And honestly, my
- 21:21Speaker 3: next trip is planned for the fourth of November, so
- 21:24Speaker 3: I'm kind of using this trip as like gearing up
- 21:28Speaker 3: for that rot trip to see what deer here.
- 21:32Speaker 2: All the deer I think have should have moved on.
- 21:34Speaker 3: The corn just got cut the other day, so three
- 21:37Speaker 3: acres of corn was left as well. So we're gonna
- 21:40Speaker 3: be dealing with like something really exciting. No, And my
- 21:43Speaker 3: favorite thing about it is there's never been no pressure
- 21:45Speaker 3: on this farm. That is like my mo I don't
- 21:47Speaker 3: like to have pressure on it. So I'm gonna push
- 21:50Speaker 3: in a little bit, find as many many scrapes as
- 21:52Speaker 3: I can, start putting cameras out, start doing some observation sets,
- 21:56Speaker 3: and then once I see that deer, I'm gonna move in.
- 21:59Speaker 2: That's my plan.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Like I said, the red moon, the moon phase, everything
- 22:03Speaker 3: is lining up. The weather is going to be good
- 22:05Speaker 3: enough in the dates are going to be awesome. So
- 22:09Speaker 3: I am taking a decoy with me. I don't know
- 22:11Speaker 3: if I'm going to deploy that end of October. I
- 22:13Speaker 3: think the grunner in the rattling antlers could be a
- 22:16Speaker 3: true benefit. This is a farm that is a big
- 22:20Speaker 3: seedar thicket and there's not a lot of timber around it,
- 22:24Speaker 3: so longlining deer. Long lining is a true thing in
- 22:27Speaker 3: this time of year because they're going to be trying
- 22:29Speaker 3: to find that first you know dough that comes into heat.
- 22:33Speaker 3: I think there's a good chance that I might pick
- 22:35Speaker 3: up bucks that I you know, normally wouldn't pick up
- 22:39Speaker 3: in this timeframe, and you got a little window when
- 22:41Speaker 3: they're there, They're going to be there.
- 22:43Speaker 2: So I'm ready to jump on that.
- 22:45Speaker 1: So for someone that does not pay attention to the
- 22:46Speaker 1: red Moon, that's me. What does that mean? Like so like, okay,
- 22:51Speaker 1: it's the peak of the red moon and this is
- 22:53Speaker 1: the peak activity does a change where you sit or
- 22:56Speaker 1: set up? Because I know there's I know just enough
- 22:59Speaker 1: to ask this question, and that's where it ends, like
- 23:02Speaker 1: because I know there's like feeding time, Like what does
- 23:04Speaker 1: it mean?
- 23:04Speaker 2: Uh? And how is it impacting your strategy?
- 23:07Speaker 3: Yeah, so I will say, like it's just it doesn't
- 23:11Speaker 3: really impact it a ton as far as uh, I'm
- 23:16Speaker 3: not saying like all the red Moon's here, like I'm
- 23:18Speaker 3: gonna kill a big one tonight. Like it's just one
- 23:20Speaker 3: of those tools like you still like have to play
- 23:23Speaker 3: the wind, you have to do all the things. It's
- 23:25Speaker 3: just another factor to be able to put into the
- 23:28Speaker 3: equation that like that pressure is building. So the red
- 23:30Speaker 3: Moon in a nutshell is just when you know, I'm
- 23:35Speaker 3: not great with it either, but the you know, the
- 23:37Speaker 3: under undertoe and the overhead of you know, the moon
- 23:41Speaker 3: and everything lining up and the pressure is the greatest.
- 23:46Speaker 3: You know, it's the you know, that's what moves the
- 23:48Speaker 3: tides and everything in the oceans and stuff.
- 23:50Speaker 2: So it's got a big pulling factor.
- 23:52Speaker 3: And you know, as I look at as I look
- 23:55Speaker 3: at the dates right now, like we're looking at the
- 23:57Speaker 3: twenty fourth, like the peak time is you know, the
- 23:59Speaker 3: first day is three for so the peak pressure, the
- 24:05Speaker 3: peak time where the deer it could help get the
- 24:07Speaker 3: deer get up and moving is isn't a good time.
- 24:11Speaker 3: And I'm like I said, I like the red moon.
- 24:16Speaker 3: I think I've killed like sixty two percent of my
- 24:19Speaker 3: bucks on a red moon. So I feel like that's
- 24:22Speaker 3: a pretty good number in the white tail world. So
- 24:26Speaker 3: in I don't think it'll Jake, I really don't think
- 24:32Speaker 3: it'll change what I do. It's just happening as I'm there,
- 24:35Speaker 3: you know what I mean. I'm still gonna I'm not
- 24:36Speaker 3: gonna be like, oh, it's a you know, it's saying
- 24:39Speaker 3: to do be on a field edge, So I better
- 24:41Speaker 3: go on a field edge.
- 24:42Speaker 2: No, I'm I'm gonna read the farm and read the deer.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Still It's just one of those things that just like, hey,
- 24:47Speaker 3: he might get up a little earlier. And I will
- 24:49Speaker 3: say the Red Moon on this deer that I killed
- 24:52Speaker 3: the first night of the Red Moon on the ninth,
- 24:53Speaker 3: I encountered him.
- 24:54Speaker 2: The peak.
- 24:56Speaker 3: The peak time was, I want to say it was
- 25:00Speaker 3: four fifteen. He showed up at four o'clock in the
- 25:02Speaker 3: afternoon on the night.
- 25:04Speaker 1: So it's like your Eastern time, Yeah, Eastern times down
- 25:07Speaker 1: there for folks too.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 25:09Speaker 3: So I had just got in the gotten the blind
- 25:11Speaker 3: and he showed it up. I'm like, oh my gosh,
- 25:13Speaker 3: like we got four hours until dark, and like here
- 25:15Speaker 3: he is.
- 25:16Speaker 2: You know. So I do put a little validity in it,
- 25:19Speaker 2: but it's not the end all, be all factor for me.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Yeah, let me run a quick scenario pass you that
- 25:25Speaker 1: it's probably gonna be relatable to a lot of folks.
- 25:28Speaker 1: You get a picture of a big deer that you
- 25:29Speaker 1: haven't seen before, and maybe your cameras are dead, or
- 25:31Speaker 1: maybe you put him out late, or maybe it's a
- 25:33Speaker 1: new one that just showed up.
- 25:34Speaker 2: You don't know.
- 25:34Speaker 1: This is deer that just showed up on a scrape.
- 25:36Speaker 1: It was eleven o'clock a night it was one o'clock
- 25:38Speaker 1: in the morning. You know, what what would be your
- 25:41Speaker 1: next two or three day strategy if and when that
- 25:43Speaker 1: happens on the Let's say it's the twenty second or
- 25:46Speaker 1: the twenty third, when you get that first picture on
- 25:47Speaker 1: a scrape, you're like, I want to kill.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Him, and it's after dark, that's what you're saying. It's
- 25:52Speaker 2: not daylight. Not daylight.
- 25:55Speaker 3: I would, I would for sure, you know, knowing he's
- 25:59Speaker 3: in the area.
- 26:00Speaker 2: I mean a lot of factors going to that.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Do I have any other dar on camera too that
- 26:02Speaker 3: I'm chasing or any of those daylighting you know, Honestly,
- 26:06Speaker 3: I don't know if it would change much of what
- 26:08Speaker 3: I'm doing.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Depending on the time.
- 26:10Speaker 3: If he's just after, you know, shooting hour or shooting
- 26:14Speaker 3: light or just before, that might change something, but I
- 26:18Speaker 3: would probably just honestly, I need more information than that personally.
- 26:23Speaker 2: I need I need.
- 26:25Speaker 3: I need some different data points I need If he's
- 26:27Speaker 3: just on one camera, I need some more, Like I
- 26:29Speaker 3: need to know that he's roaming the farm. If he's
- 26:32Speaker 3: just kind of showing up, I'm just gonna kind of
- 26:34Speaker 3: keep playing my playbook and maybe I'll catch him on
- 26:37Speaker 3: his feet or maybe catch him on another camera daylighting
- 26:41Speaker 3: or something like that. It probably wouldn't change too much.
- 26:44Speaker 3: I would just keep running everything that I thought would
- 26:46Speaker 3: be working, and then kind of I don't want to
- 26:48Speaker 3: say hope, but just kind of stay in the game
- 26:51Speaker 3: because if he's there, that's all I need to know.
- 26:54Speaker 2: If he's there.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Before years ago, if I had a night a night picture,
- 26:59Speaker 3: I'd be so down in the dumps, like, man, he's
- 27:02Speaker 3: not coming to night.
- 27:03Speaker 2: I really don't care anymore.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Even at that time of year or even early season,
- 27:08Speaker 3: like the year that I just killed in Michigan, I
- 27:11Speaker 3: don't have a ton of daylight pictures him. This year,
- 27:13Speaker 3: I actually had more eye sightings of him than I
- 27:15Speaker 3: do have pictures. He just was never on camera. Yeah,
- 27:19Speaker 3: but I encountered him way more. So, you know, I
- 27:23Speaker 3: really feel like the daylight or night, I just need
- 27:26Speaker 3: to know he's there, and then I'm going to kind
- 27:28Speaker 3: of work back from there and just kind of have
- 27:31Speaker 3: my instincts take over and just keep running the plays
- 27:35Speaker 3: that I know I like it.
- 27:36Speaker 1: So, okay, next next seven days, October twenty second of
- 27:39Speaker 1: the twenty ninth ten being this is the best week
- 27:42Speaker 1: of the entire season. For opportunity, one being this is
- 27:46Speaker 1: the worst week of the entire season.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Where are you gonna put it with right now?
- 27:51Speaker 3: Where the where the weather is, how the moon's lining up,
- 27:54Speaker 3: and the state and the area I'm going to.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I mean, we're putting it. We're putting it. We're like
- 28:00Speaker 2: a nine to two right now, we're going we're going high.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Like I'm putting a lot of I'm putting a lot
- 28:05Speaker 3: of emphasis on this trip because you know, just as
- 28:08Speaker 3: well as I do, when when that calendar flips November,
- 28:12Speaker 3: the shackles are off and you have no idea, you
- 28:15Speaker 3: can get into that lockdown sphase.
- 28:17Speaker 2: You can get down where deer just blown by you
- 28:20Speaker 2: at eighty mile an hour and you're like, what the heck?
- 28:22Speaker 3: You know, it's like, I'm putting a lot of pressure,
- 28:25Speaker 3: not pressure, but a lot of validity on this.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Trip to to see the biggest year in the area.
- 28:32Speaker 2: And that's that's kind where we're at.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Yeah, semi controlled environment, great, great opportunity. Encourage everyone to
- 28:37Speaker 1: go out there and make the most out of it.
- 28:39Speaker 1: And good luck in Iowa. Congratulations once again on your
- 28:43Speaker 1: Michigan buck If someone if are you did you film
- 28:46Speaker 1: that hunter is there any opportunity with people.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Okay, so where will be Where will people be able
- 28:50Speaker 2: to watch that?
- 28:51Speaker 3: So it'll be like next year probably on our Grit
- 28:55Speaker 3: series for Latitude the Grit there and then probably after
- 28:59Speaker 3: that gets then I'll have it on my YouTube channel,
- 29:02Speaker 3: the Fault podcast tube channel eventually, but that nobody will
- 29:05Speaker 3: probably be able to see it until next year.
- 29:08Speaker 2: But yeah, it's it's filmed and we're good to go.
- 29:10Speaker 2: But uh, yeah, I.
- 29:12Speaker 3: Appreciate you giving me the opportunity to come on here
- 29:14Speaker 3: and talk a little bit. I'm no expert by any means,
- 29:17Speaker 3: but i do like to talk.
- 29:18Speaker 2: So you have the light right line of work.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, Yeah, awesome, Eron, Thank you so much.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Congratulations once again, thank you, Jake.
- 29:28Speaker 1: All right, next up on the line, we have Christian
- 29:30Speaker 1: Babcock from Texas and Oklahoma, mainly hunting Texas right now,
- 29:34Speaker 1: but we got it. We have representation from what would
- 29:38Speaker 1: you what would you consider Texas and Oklahoma the South,
- 29:40Speaker 1: the Plain States, the South Plains, the South desert. Yeah,
- 29:44Speaker 1: it feels like a desert about ninety percent of the year.
- 29:46Speaker 1: But I'd say we'll just call it at the South.
- 29:49Speaker 1: I'll identify with the Southern hunter some rep Okay, all right,
- 29:52Speaker 1: so from the South, and have we been kicking off
- 29:54Speaker 1: a trivia question or a fun fact for the state
- 29:58Speaker 1: that the folk is joining us from. I'm going to
- 30:01Speaker 1: tell you the amount of total deer that were harvested
- 30:03Speaker 1: in the state of Texas last year, and you're going
- 30:06Speaker 1: to have to guess how many of them were archery,
- 30:09Speaker 1: so you can give it and it's in the number
- 30:11Speaker 1: of thousands. It could be tens of thousands, could be
- 30:14Speaker 1: hundreds of thousands. There was eight hundred and thirty seven
- 30:16Speaker 1: thousand deer tagged in the state of Texas in twenty
- 30:19Speaker 1: twenty four. How many of them were archery bucks or
- 30:23Speaker 1: archery deer? Excuse me, archery deer? How many archery out
- 30:26Speaker 1: of eight hundred and thirty seven thousand, man, we have
- 30:30Speaker 1: like a two week or a two month long rifle season,
- 30:33Speaker 1: so I'm going to say the majority of them were
- 30:34Speaker 1: probably rifle. I'm going to say like one hundred and
- 30:37Speaker 1: fifty thousand or archery.
- 30:39Speaker 2: That's that's pretty darn good.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Seventy five thousand, So seventy five thousand, seven hundred and
- 30:44Speaker 1: sixty one thousand deer were shot with a firearm.
- 30:47Speaker 2: In the state of Texas.
- 30:48Speaker 1: So bow hunting is a pretty small minority in Texas,
- 30:53Speaker 1: or at least that's what it looks like.
- 30:54Speaker 2: I'm telling you.
- 30:55Speaker 1: When you can rifle hunt the majority of this season,
- 30:57Speaker 1: it's like put that struggle stick away and let's do
- 30:59Speaker 1: some let's do some gun hunting.
- 31:01Speaker 2: So that's how people are done here. I like it.
- 31:03Speaker 2: So what.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Have you been seeing down there in Texas with some
- 31:09Speaker 1: of your hunts here recently? Yeah, so I've been hunting.
- 31:12Speaker 1: I've been hunting five times since the beginning of October
- 31:15Speaker 1: when our season opened, I think it opened actually the
- 31:18Speaker 1: in there of September. But pretty slow movement overall. I've
- 31:22Speaker 1: been hunting some travel corridors, throwing up a bunch of
- 31:25Speaker 1: mock scrapes, and I've been averaging like three to five
- 31:29Speaker 1: deer sit right there at the end, primarily hunting evenings
- 31:33Speaker 1: right there at the last fifteen minutes of light.
- 31:35Speaker 2: So not a ton of movement.
- 31:37Speaker 1: I know, we had a really really good acorn crop
- 31:40Speaker 1: and there was a bunch of good brows, so I
- 31:44Speaker 1: haven't been seeing a whole lot of movement from that perspective.
- 31:47Speaker 1: But I went out on Wednesday saw five doughs a
- 31:50Speaker 1: in a bobcat. So any set that you're not getting
- 31:53Speaker 1: an absolute goose egg this time of the year when
- 31:56Speaker 1: it's ninety.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Three degrees is a really good set.
- 32:00Speaker 1: The rainfall this summer, was it above average? Below average?
- 32:03Speaker 1: Not sure? I would say it was above average until
- 32:06Speaker 1: the last part of the of the of the summer,
- 32:09Speaker 1: like the end part of the summer, and we haven't
- 32:10Speaker 1: had rain here and it feels like over a month,
- 32:13Speaker 1: so it's been pretty dry as of late. But man,
- 32:15Speaker 1: in the spring, in that early part of the summer
- 32:17Speaker 1: where we're getting a ton of rain, so I thought
- 32:20Speaker 1: we're gonna have a great antler season. And I've got
- 32:22Speaker 1: several really good bucks down here, so I think the
- 32:24Speaker 1: antlers grew really well.
- 32:25Speaker 2: It's just got pretty dry the end of the summer. Yeah, well, we're.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Getting into the exciting time of October deer season. This
- 32:34Speaker 1: is when everyone starts to get really excited and you
- 32:37Speaker 1: know it's October twenty second. What for the next seven days?
- 32:43Speaker 1: What are you kind of looking at potentially as far
- 32:45Speaker 1: as where you're sitting and what are you keen in on.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Are you looking for scrapes, are you looking for a
- 32:49Speaker 1: specific food source. Are you looking for those two things
- 32:52Speaker 1: in tandem. What's on your what's on your game plan?
- 32:55Speaker 1: Because it's you know, late October, and this is the
- 32:57Speaker 1: time when it's it's getting more exciting by the day,
- 33:01Speaker 1: like we're getting to the part of the season where
- 33:03Speaker 1: it's going to get better and better and better and
- 33:05Speaker 1: better for quite some period of time. So breed some optimism.
- 33:11Speaker 1: The unders that have been struggling throughout them month of October, well,
- 33:15Speaker 1: if they still can afford their water bill because all
- 33:17Speaker 1: the laundry detergent they spent in the first half of October.
- 33:19Speaker 1: With all the heat, I mean, we're still looking at,
- 33:22Speaker 1: you know, some temperatures in the nineties for the highs,
- 33:26Speaker 1: so but I'm seeing some shifting down towards the low
- 33:29Speaker 1: eighties and then we're you know, looking at fifties in
- 33:31Speaker 1: the mornings. So that that's you know, that last week
- 33:35Speaker 1: of October. I'm really looking at those really cold days
- 33:37Speaker 1: where it's a you know, where it's shifting downwards. I'm
- 33:40Speaker 1: monitoring a bunch of spots with mock scrapes, and I'm
- 33:42Speaker 1: seeing more and more bucks hitting those towards the end
- 33:45Speaker 1: of daylight hours. Huge typically in the evenings. But I'm
- 33:49Speaker 1: trying to still get them between bed and food right now,
- 33:51Speaker 1: but giving them a reason to stop alongside where I'm at,
- 33:55Speaker 1: which is usually a mock scrape. So I'm getting pretty
- 33:57Speaker 1: tight to bedding as they're laying more and more signed down,
- 34:00Speaker 1: especially the rubs and scrapes.
- 34:01Speaker 2: I'm keying in on that.
- 34:02Speaker 1: And then one spot in particular, I just saw a
- 34:06Speaker 1: farmer end up playing in a winter wheat field, so
- 34:07Speaker 1: I was pretty happy about that. But you know, we're
- 34:10Speaker 1: hunting in the south here, so there's a lot of
- 34:12Speaker 1: corn on every property line, and if you can get
- 34:14Speaker 1: in between some of that, find some good sign, maybe
- 34:16Speaker 1: lay down your own mock scrape. I think as we
- 34:18Speaker 1: start to trend to the lows and in the fifties,
- 34:20Speaker 1: we're going to see some really, really good deer activity.
- 34:22Speaker 1: But it's been pretty slim, so I think we got
- 34:25Speaker 1: some pent up demand with all the heat we've had.
- 34:28Speaker 2: I think these are going to bust loose. I really do.
- 34:30Speaker 1: And I think as soon as we get that front
- 34:31Speaker 1: whenever we you know, here in Illinois looks like there's
- 34:35Speaker 1: the temperatures are getting back the closer to I guess normal.
- 34:38Speaker 2: It's been it's been unseasonably warm up here too.
- 34:40Speaker 1: But when you say tight to betting, so we're picturing
- 34:44Speaker 1: October twenty second to October twenty ninth, is your plan
- 34:47Speaker 1: to still be somewhat tight to betting on a scrape
- 34:49Speaker 1: maybe a mock scrape within one hundred yards of where
- 34:52Speaker 1: you're anticipating them betting or is it two hundred yards
- 34:54Speaker 1: or sixty yards?
- 34:55Speaker 2: Is it like a rule of thumb for someone to
- 34:56Speaker 2: have in the back of their mind.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm I would say less than a coup one
- 35:00Speaker 1: hundred yards For me, I can only speak to my
- 35:03Speaker 1: situation where I'm hunting down here. It's very small permission pieces,
- 35:06Speaker 1: so a lot of these properties are long, kind of
- 35:09Speaker 1: skinny flagpole access type pieces, and so there's not a
- 35:12Speaker 1: whole lot of width, but a lot of them have
- 35:13Speaker 1: some depth. So I'm hunting pretty close to betting on
- 35:19Speaker 1: those scrapes. So I want them to move, obviously, and
- 35:22Speaker 1: like you said, it is going to bust loose. So
- 35:24Speaker 1: but I don't want to ask too much. Right three
- 35:26Speaker 1: four or five hundred yards away from my betting area
- 35:28Speaker 1: to a mature buck right now, that's still a long ways.
- 35:31Speaker 1: When we're talking still in the eighties for the high
- 35:34Speaker 1: So I want to ask him to do something, but
- 35:36Speaker 1: just not ask him to do too much. So for
- 35:47Speaker 1: the later part of October, are you bringing ratoin anilers
- 35:50Speaker 1: or you're bringing a call? Are you are you pulling
- 35:52Speaker 1: out a bag of tricks? Are you still just trying
- 35:53Speaker 1: to hunt natural movement for this time period? So primarily
- 35:57Speaker 1: in Texas, I'll hunt natural movement, but I do have
- 35:59Speaker 1: a least in southwestern Oklahoma, a lot of mature bucks,
- 36:02Speaker 1: pretty low pressure around in that area. That's a spot
- 36:04Speaker 1: that I'm definitely going to bring out, bring the decoy out,
- 36:07Speaker 1: and definitely do some rattling. What I've noticed is this
- 36:10Speaker 1: big boss buck decoy that I like to use down
- 36:14Speaker 1: here in Texas. That's about the biggest buck you would
- 36:16Speaker 1: ever see body wise, But uput open Oklahoma, he looks
- 36:19Speaker 1: a little more like a familiar face. So I don't
- 36:22Speaker 1: want to scare off my Texas bucks, but for the
- 36:24Speaker 1: Oklahoma ones, I'll absolutely break out the decoy and start
- 36:27Speaker 1: smashing that black rack together. Yeah what real quick base
- 36:31Speaker 1: give us a rundown on what the strategy would be
- 36:34Speaker 1: for southwestern Oklahoma with the decoy, with rattling like, what
- 36:38Speaker 1: are the conditions, how far are you putting the decoy?
- 36:40Speaker 1: Kind of break that down For someone that has the
- 36:43Speaker 1: decoy in their garage, they like, yeah, I'm I'm gonna
- 36:45Speaker 1: try using that. Oh yeah, So I actually set up
- 36:48Speaker 1: a mock scrape in the middle of this kind of
- 36:51Speaker 1: travel corridor on this river bottom piece that I'm hunting
- 36:54Speaker 1: southwest Oklahoma. So I'll put that buck too, not too
- 36:56Speaker 1: far from that mock scrape, because I'm getting a ton
- 36:59Speaker 1: of inventory and trail camp pictures around that spot, and
- 37:01Speaker 1: I feel like that's a spot where if a buck
- 37:04Speaker 1: that hadn't been in the area before just popped up
- 37:07Speaker 1: at it, it would look pretty normal, right, like, oh, this
- 37:09Speaker 1: buck's kind of gum and lay down some sign here,
- 37:12Speaker 1: So I would I'm gonna put mine kind of face
- 37:14Speaker 1: in the bedding area. And then obviously I like to
- 37:17Speaker 1: put him twenty twenty five yards in a kind of
- 37:21Speaker 1: in a posture looking away in a sense, And so
- 37:23Speaker 1: I want that buck to have to kind of swing
- 37:25Speaker 1: around and get even closer to me to end up
- 37:27Speaker 1: checking out that decoy. Obviously, you got ground sent You've
- 37:29Speaker 1: been touching the decoy, so you kind of got a
- 37:32Speaker 1: crapp er get off the pot in a sense of
- 37:34Speaker 1: when that buck decides to come in, he's either going
- 37:36Speaker 1: to spook or get shot. But hopefully it's a mature
- 37:38Speaker 1: buck when he comes in to do that. But I'm
- 37:40Speaker 1: setting my decoy up right there near that mock scrape,
- 37:43Speaker 1: so it looks pretty natural in terms of a new
- 37:44Speaker 1: buck cruising into a you know, established area. Do you
- 37:49Speaker 1: feel that, you know, looking at knowing the time of
- 37:52Speaker 1: year and kind of looking into the weather for the
- 37:55Speaker 1: you know, call it twenty second to the twenty ninth.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Do you have pretty high X expectations or are you
- 38:01Speaker 1: trying to keep them in check or where? Where's your
- 38:04Speaker 1: level of excitement based off of all the factors that
- 38:07Speaker 1: we know as of right now.
- 38:08Speaker 2: I'm pretty excited overall.
- 38:11Speaker 1: I feel like we've been at such a low even
- 38:13Speaker 1: average feels high at the moment. So we've been sitting
- 38:17Speaker 1: at like a one or a two confidence level, and
- 38:19Speaker 1: now as we're seeing you know, some fifteen degree wings
- 38:22Speaker 1: in temperature, I'd say that get me up to a
- 38:24Speaker 1: five or six. Like it's not going to be unseasonably
- 38:27Speaker 1: cold though that last week of October. It's just it's
- 38:30Speaker 1: still going to be right in line with probably expectations.
- 38:32Speaker 1: But when it's been as unseasonably warm as it's been,
- 38:36Speaker 1: average feels like exceptional right now, right So I'm I'm
- 38:40Speaker 1: feeling pretty confident about that, but I'm not expecting it
- 38:44Speaker 1: to break loose, just in an extraordinary way.
- 38:47Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Yeah, when is your if you had to say, over
- 38:51Speaker 1: the years, what is your favorite time of year of where?
- 38:54Speaker 1: What pretend you only had, you know, the five days
- 38:57Speaker 1: to hunt? Like, what time period are you most excited
- 39:00Speaker 1: and amped up about it? Is it late October? As
- 39:01Speaker 1: are deeper into November or even deeper than that because
- 39:04Speaker 1: you're in the South, man, I really like that Halloween
- 39:07Speaker 1: to about the fourth of November. I feel like the
- 39:10Speaker 1: rut hasn't really busted loose, but you still got those
- 39:13Speaker 1: bucks on that cruising pattern, right, so they're a little
- 39:16Speaker 1: more susceptible to calling their home. Rangers are expanding a
- 39:19Speaker 1: bunch more so I feel like they kind of start
- 39:22Speaker 1: to expose themselves more as they start to lay down
- 39:24Speaker 1: sign and move around. But they're not in that rut
- 39:27Speaker 1: craze zombifide area where when they're running by you can't
- 39:30Speaker 1: get them to stop and when you're bow hunting, you
- 39:32Speaker 1: need them to stop and you need them to be close.
- 39:34Speaker 1: So that little five day period right there, Halloween to
- 39:37Speaker 1: about the fourth or the fifth, that is my favorite
- 39:39Speaker 1: time to hunt all year, especially here in the South.
- 39:42Speaker 1: What are you keen in on through the twenty second
- 39:45Speaker 1: twenty ninth to have the most success in the octogon
- 39:47Speaker 1: Halloween to that fourth, Because I feel like for someone
- 39:50Speaker 1: that listens to that now, like I'm just gonna wait
- 39:51Speaker 1: until Halloween, until the fourth. That's when Christian says it's
- 39:54Speaker 1: the best. But I think a lot of times it
- 39:56Speaker 1: has something to do with throwing some hunts, throwing some CITs,
- 39:59Speaker 1: doing maybe a little bit of scouting, and kind of
- 40:01Speaker 1: building up a case to make a good plan from
- 40:04Speaker 1: Halloween to the fourth. So, if you were someone that
- 40:06Speaker 1: just wanted to key in on and develop a really
- 40:08Speaker 1: strong plan for for that weekend, what are you specifically
- 40:13Speaker 1: laser focused on over the next seven days from a
- 40:15Speaker 1: scouting perspective or in inventory perspective. Yeah, I'm looking. I'm
- 40:18Speaker 1: looking for scrapes and I'm looking for just natural travel corridors.
- 40:21Speaker 1: As the as the uh you know, the temperatures get
- 40:24Speaker 1: lower and lower. I just think since we've I feel
- 40:26Speaker 1: like we're gonna have this pent up demand similar like
- 40:28Speaker 1: you see in the markets, right, I mean, these bucks
- 40:31Speaker 1: want to move, they want to lay down sign. But
- 40:33Speaker 1: it's like, dude, I'm sitting here wearing a winter coat
- 40:36Speaker 1: right now. I don't want to be cruising all around
- 40:38Speaker 1: hundreds and hundreds of yards. So I'm just looking for
- 40:41Speaker 1: those places, like I said, in between food, bed and
- 40:43Speaker 1: bed and food and places where they're laying down signed.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Like so if you can find natural scrapes sentting over,
- 40:48Speaker 1: maybe a scrape line or a rub line, something like that.
- 40:51Speaker 1: And the thing is, man, you can't kill them from
- 40:53Speaker 1: the couch. So although maybe it won't be the best
- 40:55Speaker 1: time because it's not going to be unseasonably cold, some
- 40:57Speaker 1: deer definitely going to get killed and you can't kill
- 40:59Speaker 1: them sitting at home. Like I know, we've been saying
- 41:02Speaker 1: hurry up and wait, hurry up and wait. But when
- 41:04Speaker 1: we start getting in the October twenties, it's time to
- 41:06Speaker 1: hurry up and get in the woods, you know, even
- 41:08Speaker 1: if it is warm, because they're definitely thinking about it.
- 41:11Speaker 2: I like it.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Well, so you had put it one to ten. You're
- 41:14Speaker 1: at like a five or six for the next seven days,
- 41:16Speaker 1: then I would.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Say about a five or six.
- 41:18Speaker 1: Yeah, which when you're going from a one or two, man,
- 41:21Speaker 1: it feels great.
- 41:23Speaker 2: That's a good way to look at it.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Well, Christian, good luck, good luck in Texas, good luck
- 41:28Speaker 1: in Oklahoma. And if people want to tune in on
- 41:30Speaker 1: how your guys this season progresses, where.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Can they do that?
- 41:34Speaker 1: Yeah, just check us out on YouTube Hunter's Advantage and
- 41:36Speaker 1: we also have the podcast on Apple and Spotify, so
- 41:39Speaker 1: you can just stay up to date with us there.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Awesome, good luck, Christian, I appreciate it all right.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Next up on the line, we have Benny from Minnesota
- 41:48Speaker 1: with Moultrie.
- 41:49Speaker 4: How's it going, Yes, sir, I'm happy to be here.
- 41:51Speaker 4: Thanks for having me on. Things are going great, man.
- 41:54Speaker 4: I mean, the deer aren't moving as much as I'd
- 41:56Speaker 4: like them to be, but we're We're hearing of guys
- 42:00Speaker 4: and deer all over the country, so that's that's fun
- 42:02Speaker 4: to hear. And I'm hoping that that happens to me
- 42:05Speaker 4: before too long.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Well, I think when this goes live, we're at the
- 42:08Speaker 1: stage of the season where it's only going to get
- 42:10Speaker 1: more exciting in the time that We've been waiting for,
- 42:13Speaker 1: you know, really since last year, but I got to
- 42:16Speaker 1: kick it off with a trivia question here about the
- 42:18Speaker 1: state of Minnesota. I'm putting you right on the spot,
- 42:22Speaker 1: just like everyone else. Yep, And so I'll give you
- 42:26Speaker 1: I'll give you this question. Okay, what year was there
- 42:32Speaker 1: the highest total harvest of whitetail deer in the state
- 42:36Speaker 1: of Minnesota. So the amount the most amount of deer tagged,
- 42:39Speaker 1: whether it was archery or their firearm season.
- 42:42Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna roll with something in the early
- 42:46Speaker 4: two thousands. I'm gonna say two thousand and seven.
- 42:49Speaker 2: You're close.
- 42:50Speaker 1: So actually, last week we had they guess two thousand
- 42:52Speaker 1: and three and it was two thousand and seven. You
- 42:53Speaker 1: guts two thousand and seven. This is actually two thousand
- 42:55Speaker 1: and three. There was two hundred and ninety thousand shot
- 43:01Speaker 1: of two thousand and three, and for reference, there was
- 43:03Speaker 1: only one hundred and seventy thousand shot in twenty twenty four.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Wow. Unbelievable, Yeah, so unbelievable. Yeah.
- 43:12Speaker 1: So, anyhow, it's late October, and what are you most
- 43:17Speaker 1: excited about or what are you keen in on for
- 43:19Speaker 1: the next week?
- 43:19Speaker 2: Here?
- 43:20Speaker 4: Oh man, So so this week finally had bucks that
- 43:24Speaker 4: were starting to move on to our properties. So I'm
- 43:27Speaker 4: to kind of give you a rundown. I'm hunting a
- 43:29Speaker 4: lot of egg land. It's preferably for rifle hunters, the
- 43:33Speaker 4: gun hunters of the world, but it's it's what I
- 43:37Speaker 4: have access to, and I enjoy bow hunting it a lot.
- 43:39Speaker 4: It's a challenge, but I absolutely love it. Finally this
- 43:43Speaker 4: week the deer kind of started moving. They're hitting scrapes
- 43:46Speaker 4: a little bit more. I sent you a couple of
- 43:48Speaker 4: videos this morning of deer that have been coming around,
- 43:51Speaker 4: and it's it's looking up. But actually in two days
- 43:55Speaker 4: I'm headed to Illinois for a hunt, and nice from
- 43:58Speaker 4: what those guys are saying, the deer are moving and
- 44:01Speaker 4: there's a good cold front hu the way, so really
- 44:03Speaker 4: hoping that we can connect with one. Hanging out with
- 44:05Speaker 4: the stay grounded boys down there, and so yeah, the
- 44:10Speaker 4: next week, it's just hoping that nothing daylights on camera at.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Home when I'm gone.
- 44:15Speaker 4: But I'm really looking forward to getting back and just
- 44:19Speaker 4: hopefully having some deers start to move in a little
- 44:21Speaker 4: bit more, be a little bit more consistent, and then
- 44:23Speaker 4: hopefully connect with one before rifle season.
- 44:26Speaker 1: So you leave for Illinois in two days. How long
- 44:30Speaker 1: are you planning the state down there?
- 44:31Speaker 2: So I'll be in Illinois?
- 44:33Speaker 4: I mean realistically, I told them I can be there
- 44:35Speaker 4: for about six days, about a week, and then I
- 44:38Speaker 4: got to get home to the wife. And so it's
- 44:41Speaker 4: either a shoot one right away and come home or
- 44:44Speaker 4: I'm there all six days and get skunk and then
- 44:47Speaker 4: come home.
- 44:48Speaker 1: So okay, So what is your mental game plan going
- 44:51Speaker 1: into that? You know you're traveling, so you got to
- 44:53Speaker 1: figure out things kind of on the fly. I'm sure
- 44:55Speaker 1: they've done some scouting. I'm sure they have cameras up.
- 44:57Speaker 1: But as you're you know, you have some time to
- 45:00Speaker 1: think about it. What are you What are you gonna do?
- 45:02Speaker 1: You got six days to trying to.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Make it happen. Yeah, oh absolutely. So obviously at home
- 45:06Speaker 2: it's been slow.
- 45:07Speaker 4: So I'm like, you know what, man, I got to
- 45:09Speaker 4: kind of just get my mind on Illinois. Just look
- 45:11Speaker 4: forward to being out there hanging out with some of
- 45:14Speaker 4: our partners multi partners that is. And I mean like
- 45:18Speaker 4: they shared their cameras with me through the app, and
- 45:21Speaker 4: I'm looking on there, I mean every single day and
- 45:24Speaker 4: I'm like dude, this just brings my self confidence down
- 45:28Speaker 4: so much about hunt that.
- 45:31Speaker 2: So many big deer in Illinois.
- 45:33Speaker 4: There's just and I mean, they set up the properties
- 45:36Speaker 4: perfect for what they're doing, and so they've got a
- 45:39Speaker 4: lot of a lot of blinds. I don't know how
- 45:42Speaker 4: many like actual stand setups they have, but I know
- 45:46Speaker 4: they've got a lot of great blinds that will probably
- 45:47Speaker 4: be hunting out of hunting egg fields for the most part.
- 45:52Speaker 4: But yeah, they've They've had a couple of really nice
- 45:54Speaker 4: dear come off of those properties already this year, and
- 45:57Speaker 4: so I'm really looking forward to getting out there.
- 45:59Speaker 1: Are most are you anticipating most of those blinds? Are
- 46:01Speaker 1: they set up on falt food plots, like green food sources,
- 46:05Speaker 1: staining beans, sanding corn, Like, what's kind of that setup
- 46:08Speaker 1: look like to focus on food?
- 46:09Speaker 4: Yeah, as far as I know, basically, I was on
- 46:12Speaker 4: the phone with Tanner yesterday and he was telling me
- 46:15Speaker 4: like they had just cut like a strip of corn,
- 46:18Speaker 4: so they're leaving some standing corn and whatnot, and then
- 46:20Speaker 4: they've got a couple mock scrapes set up right out
- 46:23Speaker 4: in the middle of these cut fields, and I mean,
- 46:26Speaker 4: like it is prime set up for deer hunting like
- 46:29Speaker 4: it's the best of the best.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Sweet.
- 46:32Speaker 1: So if you were staying in Minnesota from October twenty
- 46:36Speaker 1: second to October twenty ninth, you know, historically, what are
- 46:39Speaker 1: some things that you're really paying close attention to looking
- 46:42Speaker 1: at the extended forecast, I mean, you know, temperatures are
- 46:46Speaker 1: seeming to get back closer to normal. But what would
- 46:50Speaker 1: you be if someone was struggling right now and they're
- 46:52Speaker 1: in Minnesota, you know, agland, hedgerows, fence rows, What has
- 46:57Speaker 1: you most excited for the next seven days?
- 46:59Speaker 4: Yeah, so right now, I mean honestly, right now, it's
- 47:02Speaker 4: waiting for harvest to be over, and we're probably if
- 47:05Speaker 4: I had to guess, sixty percent through corn harvest now,
- 47:10Speaker 4: and it seems like the bucks have just all kind
- 47:12Speaker 4: of moved over and they're they're hanging out in the corn,
- 47:15Speaker 4: getting as much as they can before it's off. And
- 47:17Speaker 4: then so if you're hunting egg land, I mean I'm
- 47:22Speaker 4: sitting in sometimes rows of like four trees and like
- 47:27Speaker 4: you got to just get lucky. I mean, I'm sitting
- 47:30Speaker 4: in white oaks, and they're typically coming over, these deer
- 47:33Speaker 4: coming over to feed on the acorns because there's not
- 47:36Speaker 4: that many food sources or standing food sources left that is.
- 47:41Speaker 4: And then you talk to I mean buddies. I have
- 47:44Speaker 4: buddies that are hunting hardwoods in southern Minnesota and then
- 47:48Speaker 4: eastern Minnesota and uh northern Minnesota, like different areas all
- 47:52Speaker 4: over the country, and it seems like those guys that
- 47:56Speaker 4: are hunting hardwoods, the deer are hitting scrapes like crazy,
- 48:00Speaker 4: whereas like over in the more open egg land where
- 48:03Speaker 4: I'm hunting right now, a little bit slower. But then
- 48:06Speaker 4: once things start heat up, right around Halloween is typically
- 48:09Speaker 4: when it's like guns are crazy, and for us it's
- 48:13Speaker 4: just so good. It seems like the deer are starting
- 48:16Speaker 4: to cruise a lot more, maybe got that pre rud
- 48:19Speaker 4: activity going on. And then I mean like first week
- 48:22Speaker 4: in November and then into rifle season, it's that's typically
- 48:25Speaker 4: when the deer are on the move. And so honestly,
- 48:29Speaker 4: I would say just be in the stand, like if
- 48:32Speaker 4: you can get work off, if you can time a
- 48:34Speaker 4: cold front right, if you can be on a food
- 48:37Speaker 4: source that's still standing, find where the food is, if
- 48:41Speaker 4: you've got a water hole, I mean, that's probably even better,
- 48:45Speaker 4: especially during the rut. But yeah, go to those key
- 48:48Speaker 4: sources and then just get in a high traffic area
- 48:51Speaker 4: for the rut.
- 48:53Speaker 1: How far I mean, over the years that you've hunted,
- 48:55Speaker 1: I'm just pictured. I've never hunted there, but I'm just
- 48:57Speaker 1: pictured in my head. You know a lot different parts
- 49:00Speaker 1: of the Midwest. How far do you think the line
- 49:02Speaker 1: of movement is for some of these bucks for the
- 49:05Speaker 1: later part of October where there's maybe not a ton
- 49:07Speaker 1: of betting opportunity and they're laying downsign on these edges,
- 49:10Speaker 1: I mean, do they do how far can you see it?
- 49:13Speaker 2: How far do they move? And so?
- 49:15Speaker 4: So Okay, so to give you kind of a visual,
- 49:18Speaker 4: So I'm hunting, probably the typical spot that I'm hunting
- 49:22Speaker 4: is about eight hundred acres and there's probably I don't
- 49:27Speaker 4: know ten acres of wooded area on that piece, but
- 49:31Speaker 4: it's basically around a whole swamp. And so the deer,
- 49:37Speaker 4: I mean, they cruise it hard during the rut, and
- 49:39Speaker 4: that's typically the only time we see the deer cruising
- 49:41Speaker 4: on her property. So if you're a rifle hunting, you'll
- 49:45Speaker 4: see them from a far away. But when you're bow hunting,
- 49:47Speaker 4: you're just sitting there anticipating that hopefully they're going to
- 49:49Speaker 4: come to that food source that you're sitting on within
- 49:52Speaker 4: those four trees, or you're hoping that they're going to
- 49:54Speaker 4: come and sit in within those trees in the betting
- 49:58Speaker 4: areas that I'm sitting and by so I'm trying to
- 50:01Speaker 4: sit pretty close to the betting areas.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I have spooked coupled year before.
- 50:08Speaker 4: But I mean at that point you're just trying to
- 50:11Speaker 4: risk it for the biscuit and get in there, and
- 50:14Speaker 4: all day sits can be super beneficial for those reasons.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Yeah, when I think back over the years, you know,
- 50:20Speaker 1: for these next ten days October twenty second to the
- 50:23Speaker 1: end of October, so call it nine days has been
- 50:26Speaker 1: a really productive time for trail camera inventory. Buck showing
- 50:31Speaker 1: up And what was one tip or trend you have
- 50:36Speaker 1: noticed with a buck that shows up this time of
- 50:39Speaker 1: year on a camera on a scrape that you maybe
- 50:42Speaker 1: haven't seen before earlier in the year. What advice do
- 50:46Speaker 1: you have or what things would you tell someone to
- 50:47Speaker 1: key it on.
- 50:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so this is this is actually wild.
- 50:51Speaker 4: So the deer that I sent you this morning, he
- 50:54Speaker 4: has only been on camera three times throughout this year.
- 50:56Speaker 4: He showed up like once in July, once late September,
- 51:01Speaker 4: and then just this morning. And so he's a deer
- 51:04Speaker 4: that showed up last year mid October, same exact timeframe.
- 51:09Speaker 4: So really it's if you have trail cameras, and if
- 51:12Speaker 4: you don't, I recommend you get them. Just get them
- 51:16Speaker 4: out there. Put them on scrapes, put them on high
- 51:19Speaker 4: pass routes. Go look for trails that you you can
- 51:22Speaker 4: clearly tell that deer are traveling. And I mean, you
- 51:25Speaker 4: really never know when these deer are going to show up,
- 51:27Speaker 4: especially during the rut. So get those trail cameras out.
- 51:32Speaker 4: Don't don't I would say, don't, don't mount them too
- 51:37Speaker 4: high or anything like. Put them put them on a
- 51:40Speaker 4: spot where like you know you're gonna get that camera
- 51:43Speaker 4: to trigger.
- 51:44Speaker 2: I've seen a lot of guys where they're like, man,
- 51:46Speaker 2: I put a.
- 51:46Speaker 4: Camera out and it hasn't triggered at all, and then
- 51:50Speaker 4: you end up seeing like it's at about human head height,
- 51:53Speaker 4: where it's like it should be at about waste height.
- 51:56Speaker 4: And that can ruin a guy's season because he's like, well,
- 51:59Speaker 4: I'm basing it up off my trail cameras.
- 52:01Speaker 2: There was nothing there.
- 52:02Speaker 4: I didn't go out so it's like, get as many
- 52:04Speaker 4: trail cameras and as he can out there, pay attention
- 52:08Speaker 4: to those obviously, but then also get in the stand,
- 52:11Speaker 4: because I mean, you could have a trail camera right
- 52:14Speaker 4: there and the deer could walk behind that tree and
- 52:16Speaker 4: you're never gonna know that that deer existed. So I
- 52:19Speaker 4: would say, yeah, get the trail cameras out, but also
- 52:22Speaker 4: get in the stand.
- 52:23Speaker 2: One hundred percent.
- 52:24Speaker 1: And one thing I would say too is don't be
- 52:25Speaker 1: discouraged if you get in the next when you listen
- 52:28Speaker 1: to this today, maybe you got a picture of a
- 52:29Speaker 1: deer last night that was one o'clock in the morning,
- 52:32Speaker 1: eleven o'clock at night, three o'clock in the morning, and think, oh,
- 52:35Speaker 1: he's two miles away. He might be, but a lot
- 52:37Speaker 1: of times in the next ten days, twelve days, oh yeah,
- 52:42Speaker 1: pretty good chance can be run around there in daylight somewhere.
- 52:44Speaker 2: And so that's the excited thing of that.
- 52:46Speaker 4: Yeah, And that's where I sit here too. I'm like,
- 52:48Speaker 4: I'm going to be in Illinois for allegedly six days.
- 52:51Speaker 4: So if I get one of these bucks daylight and
- 52:54Speaker 4: the shown up in the mornings, I know he's going
- 52:56Speaker 4: to bed not far away. I mean that just eats
- 52:59Speaker 4: at because you know that that deer is somewhat close
- 53:01Speaker 4: and he might daylight at night. Not a guarantee, but
- 53:05Speaker 4: I'm hoping that that doesn't happen. But at the same time,
- 53:07Speaker 4: it'll be reassuring and it'll definitely make me want to
- 53:10Speaker 4: get home. But yeah, I mean the property is out here,
- 53:15Speaker 4: the egg land. There's a bunch of egg land that
- 53:18Speaker 4: I'm hunting. And then of course these bucks are pretty
- 53:21Speaker 4: honed in on basically a twenty to thirty acre piece
- 53:25Speaker 4: on our neighbor's property, and they just they feel safe there.
- 53:28Speaker 4: There's pines all over it, there's everything they need, and
- 53:32Speaker 4: it's just once the rut gets here, then they start
- 53:34Speaker 4: traveling trying to look for does a little bit more
- 53:37Speaker 4: and that's where I can hopefully find my luck.
- 53:41Speaker 1: I like it so looking at the weather and also
- 53:44Speaker 1: time of year, because I think that's a factor. Now,
- 53:46Speaker 1: on a scale one to ten, where do you put
- 53:48Speaker 1: this next seven day stretch, and let's say ten is
- 53:52Speaker 1: the best week of the entire year, one being the
- 53:54Speaker 1: worst week of the entire year, where do you put it?
- 53:59Speaker 4: I would say next seven days would be I would
- 54:04Speaker 4: rate it as like a as like a four. It's
- 54:06Speaker 4: more like I would take it as like an observation
- 54:08Speaker 4: sit leading up to uh, basically Halloween week and in
- 54:13Speaker 4: the rut, see what the deer movement's like, see how
- 54:17Speaker 4: they're acting, seeing if if the doors are acting any different,
- 54:20Speaker 4: if there's any bucks that are kind of starting to
- 54:23Speaker 4: detail dose a little bit.
- 54:25Speaker 2: It's possible.
- 54:26Speaker 4: I've seen guys sharing trail camera photos and videos right
- 54:29Speaker 4: now that have bucks and stuff kind of dog and dos,
- 54:33Speaker 4: which is crazy.
- 54:35Speaker 2: But I'd say probably about a four.
- 54:38Speaker 4: And then I mean leading up to Halloween Halloween week,
- 54:41Speaker 4: I would say you're getting closer to that nine to
- 54:43Speaker 4: ten range.
- 54:44Speaker 2: I like it.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Well, Benny, good luck in Illinois and good luck in Minnesota.
- 54:49Speaker 1: It was a pleasure, and I encourage everyone to pay
- 54:51Speaker 1: really close attention to their cameras. If the batteries are dead,
- 54:54Speaker 1: go get some batteries and put a solar panel them.
- 54:57Speaker 1: Do what do you need to do? Because wait all year?
- 54:59Speaker 1: Where there intel? And you mentioned the deer showing up,
- 55:01Speaker 1: you know a year later. Really important to get key
- 55:05Speaker 1: intel this time of year because it might help you
- 55:07Speaker 1: next year too.
- 55:07Speaker 2: If it doesn't help you this year, absolutely.
- 55:10Speaker 1: Here you guys have it. I hope you guys enjoyed
- 55:12Speaker 1: this episode. And this is my last piece of advice
- 55:15Speaker 1: and tip from hunting white tails and scouting and being
- 55:19Speaker 1: out and about this time of year. Have a floater
- 55:22Speaker 1: trail camera or two. What I mean by that is,
- 55:24Speaker 1: if you find hot sign, you find a scrape that
- 55:26Speaker 1: you have not seen before. Maybe it's in a bottom,
- 55:29Speaker 1: maybe it's on an edge of betting, maybe it's on
- 55:31Speaker 1: a field edge.
- 55:32Speaker 2: I'm telling you that it's going.
- 55:33Speaker 1: To be a key place for intel throughout the month
- 55:36Speaker 1: of November through the remaining part of October. That might
- 55:38Speaker 1: be one of the most important pieces of scouting that
- 55:41Speaker 1: you can do passively by hanging a camera. So make
- 55:44Speaker 1: sure you have a floater camera with you when you
- 55:47Speaker 1: go out and hunt, you scout, switch batteries, whatever you do,
- 55:50Speaker 1: have one or two floater cameras and put it on
- 55:52Speaker 1: hot sign and it's going to help you.
- 55:55Speaker 2: That is it.
- 55:55Speaker 1: We will see you next week on Rough Fresh.
- 55:57Speaker 2: Good luck,
