- 0:55Well, welcome into another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:57I am your host, Bubba Starts.
- 0:59And with me today is singer songwriter, all natural bodybuilder, and active national
- 1:04guardswoman, Kimberly Meyer.
- 1:06Kimberly, welcome to the show.
- 1:08Hi, Bubba.
- 1:08Thank you for having me.
- 1:10That was a great intro introduction, by the way.
- 1:13Thank you.
- 1:14I'm just figuring out this StreamYard thing, and my goodness.
- 1:17It's really up the production value of the show.
- 1:20It's great.
- 1:21Yeah.
- 1:22Well, Kimberly, a a very long resume there, and, I don't think we covered the half of it.
- 1:28I know how busy you are.
- 1:29We've been friends online for a few years now, I would say.
- 1:33I've been following your career.
- 1:34You're also a member of our Midwest country music organization as well now, and, we got to
- 1:40meet finally in person at the awards show back in April.
- 1:42So so grateful to have you joining me today on my show.
- 1:46And, wanna give you an opportunity to share a little bit about your back story first, and
- 1:50then we're gonna get into all the exciting stuff you're up to now.
- 1:54Sure.
- 1:55Yeah.
- 1:56And like you said, it's it's been a long time coming.
- 1:58I'm glad we finally got to meet this past year.
- 2:01So I guess the back backstory, I've been doing music as long as I can remember, and that
- 2:09includes, you know, piano lessons when I was in elementary school and all the way through, high
- 2:17school and did the clarinet, you know, the band thing.
- 2:22Went to college for music performance.
- 2:25I'm classically trained.
- 2:27Took lessons from, opera singers, did clarinet in a symphony orchestra in Sioux City, and
- 2:37realized, toward the end of my college years, what am I gonna do with this degree in the
- 2:45Midwest?
- 2:46So I had a moment of freak out and joined the army, but still in the music realm.
- 2:54I joined the one forty seventh army band in Mitchell, South Dakota as a clarinetist and
- 3:01then ended up being a the front woman of the country band, which makes sense now.
- 3:08So played guitar and singing and did that for twelve years until I transitioned three years
- 3:18ago into the command role as an officer, a warrant officer.
- 3:23And so now I'm the commander of that unit.
- 3:26And aside from that, I I supplement with private lessons and performances and really
- 3:34started diving into, writing and recording in the last few years as well.
- 3:39So it's been a ride, but it's been a good one.
- 3:41It's fun.
- 3:43First of all, I wanna thank you for your service to our country and your continued
- 3:47service to your community.
- 3:49And, obviously, veterans are a huge deal for us.
- 3:53We support operation combating veteran suicide, South Dakota charity, and our good friend
- 3:59Charlotte Rupp, the founder, is missus South Dakota International.
- 4:03I don't know if our platforms are quite as big as yours, though, Kimberly.
- 4:06You've been at this music thing for a long time, and serving your country playing music, I
- 4:12think, is something that a lot of musicians don't think of, that that you can serve, you
- 4:18know, I I'd wanna say serve ourselves.
- 4:20Right?
- 4:20The the music industry is so, you know, kind of that self serving.
- 4:24Right?
- 4:24Like, we're we're doing it because it makes us feel good, you're but able to serve your
- 4:28country doing that.
- 4:28And I think that's a very interesting angle that you come at, you know, music.
- 4:34Obviously, you've done it your your whole life.
- 4:35Right?
- 4:36I imagine you're a lot like me.
- 4:37You've been singing since you could talk, and you've been able to now continue to do that in
- 4:42so many ways.
- 4:45Talk about like, was there ever any was there any trepidation?
- 4:50You know, you talked about that moment of freak out, right, graduating college.
- 4:53All you've done is kind of performing in in, you know, school and bringing that.
- 4:58And what was kind of the push?
- 5:00Or do you come from a military family or just a a transition, I would say, that a lot of people
- 5:06don't make from music into the military and still pursuing that career path.
- 5:11Mhmm.
- 5:12Yeah.
- 5:12And, actually, it it took a lot of convincing for me even.
- 5:17There were a couple of people at the university, a student and also a professor,
- 5:25that had both separately, talked to me about the opportunity, and I said, oh, no way.
- 5:31Nope.
- 5:31Not cut out for that.
- 5:33But, you know, just seeing what the unit does, you know, we're a very welcoming community.
- 5:41They're like, hey.
- 5:42Come check us out.
- 5:42Sit in with the band.
- 5:44And it it was.
- 5:47It just felt like home.
- 5:48And my grandparents, my my grandfathers had both served, and I have a cousin that was
- 5:56serving.
- 5:58And so it it was something personal, you know, that I wanted to be able to do just to give
- 6:07back and serve the the community and the country.
- 6:11And at first, it was kind of a personal thing.
- 6:14Like, I'm I'm going through some challenges, and, let's let's personally make this something
- 6:21that is, that I can grow from it.
- 6:24Right?
- 6:26I was kind of a late bloomer.
- 6:27Most most kids joined the military at 17, and I was, you know, 23.
- 6:33And so I'm thinking of career.
- 6:36I'm thinking of the health benefits, student loan repayment, and things like that.
- 6:43But, I'm glad that you brought up the the fact that it it is giving back.
- 6:50Even though it's it's music and we do the musicians, we we do music for self fulfilling
- 6:56reasons.
- 6:58But doing this job in the military, I can see it's so much more important to me now seeing
- 7:08the impact that music has on our veteran community and those who serve this country and,
- 7:18you know, they might be having PTSD or or something, that they're struggling with and and
- 7:23even just coming down, to singing the national anthem and seeing people with tears in their
- 7:29eyes.
- 7:30And music has such a strong impact on people, and that is worth it to me.
- 7:37So
- 7:38That's my favorite song, Kimberly.
- 7:42Great.
- 7:44It's a
- 7:44lot of people.
- 7:45Yeah.
- 7:46Well and I always feel so blessed when I'm asked to do it local sporting events, and I've
- 7:50applied to do it at some bigger sporting events.
- 7:53And it it's never to serve me.
- 7:55Right?
- 7:55It's it's because that is the small thing that I can do to serve our country and to give back
- 8:01to our our veterans and to give back to this country that has made so much possible for
- 8:07myself.
- 8:07Right?
- 8:08No no time in my life more so than than where we're at right now.
- 8:14Can you talk about what kind of the performances that you do as as a member of the
- 8:21army band and of of your unit there?
- 8:24What kind of stuff were you doing?
- 8:25Are you playing on base?
- 8:26Are you, you know, are you serving your community and those higher, you know, the
- 8:31higher echelons of it?
- 8:32Or what does that kinda look like?
- 8:34I don't think many of our viewers are going to really know what an army band member does
- 8:39besides maybe marching in a parade once in a while.
- 8:41Yeah.
- 8:43Yeah.
- 8:43And and you described it fairly well.
- 8:46I mean, it's it's a variety of things, and the army band has evolved.
- 8:51You know?
- 8:51It it used to be you are the the marching band and the concert band.
- 8:57And and, honestly, our unit doesn't do that as much as we are, like, more popular ensembles,
- 9:07like a country band, a rock band.
- 9:09We have people in our unit that can rap and do r and b.
- 9:13And so we balance that with our ceremonial missions as well.
- 9:20So a lot of us, like myself, for example, came in as a clarinet player, and we we can we can
- 9:25do all that ceremonial, business for our upper echelons like you described.
- 9:31And so that's, you know, promotion ceremonies or deployment ceremonies, coming home
- 9:36ceremonies.
- 9:38And, actually, one of the last times we performed as a as an ensemble like that was
- 9:43when president Trump in his first term came to Mount Rushmore.
- 9:48Mhmm.
- 9:49But like I said, most of the time, we're we're doing these popular groups, which really speaks
- 9:55more to our current audience and recruiting.
- 9:59We do a lot of recruiting and, schools tours, performing for for schools and, also the
- 10:08communities.
- 10:08So we might be playing at a stage at Sturgis like we did this past summer or, downtown Rapid
- 10:17City, something like that.
- 10:20Very community relationships as well.
- 10:24Yeah.
- 10:24That's great.
- 10:25It's so awesome.
- 10:26And I think it's good for our young artists and those people coming up to know that this is a
- 10:32path too.
- 10:33Right?
- 10:33You can pursue a path in music through the military as well, and I think that's really
- 10:39because there are so so many great benefits to being a member of our great military besides
- 10:44just serving our country.
- 10:45Right?
- 10:45You talked a little bit about, you know, the the student loan repayment or, you know, GI
- 10:51bill type stuff.
- 10:52Right?
- 10:52So you can get a paid for education, through the military, still get to play music and to
- 10:57serve in that role, not just having it kinda be an adjacent, thing towards your in your
- 11:02service.
- 11:03So really awesome.
- 11:04I really appreciate you sharing that with us today.
- 11:07Not a lot of people take that path.
- 11:09So thank you.
- 11:11Yeah.
- 11:11Absolutely.
- 11:12Yeah.
- 11:13And if anybody's interested or knows anybody that is interested in joining, come talk to me.
- 11:18I'm the one that you audition for.
- 11:19You have to go through an audition process before you can even enlist to be in the in the
- 11:24army band.
- 11:25So
- 11:26How cool.
- 11:27Well, you have always taken the path less traveled, I would say.
- 11:31And another side of that is your bodybuilding career.
- 11:35All natural bodybuilding, so you're not really you know, you're not going in there.
- 11:39I don't wanna say that you're not trying to win, but you're not winning at all costs.
- 11:45Right?
- 11:45If you win, it'll be because of what you stand on.
- 11:48Can you tell us a little bit about the, the motivations for doing it at all and then the
- 11:54motivation to keep on going with it?
- 11:56Yes.
- 11:57100%.
- 11:58I did I mention I like challenges?
- 12:02So I I like to do things that most people choose not to do.
- 12:07I like having abs.
- 12:09If it was easy, everybody would have it.
- 12:12So yeah.
- 12:13And I I do the the natural federations because I like to have an even fair playing ground.
- 12:20You know?
- 12:20I'm not gonna be taking steroids to, you know, be huge or anything.
- 12:26And, obviously, I'm I'm not a huge person.
- 12:30But within the federations, you know, you have your different categories as well, and I'm a
- 12:36bikini competitor.
- 12:38And so, yeah, it's it's a great challenge not only physically, but mentally as well.
- 12:47And because of that competitor, right, a a lot of pictures of you wearing, you know, next to
- 12:53nothing because that's what these competitions are about.
- 12:56Can you talk about maybe how your time in the military and your time on stage kind of
- 13:01prepared you a little bit and gave you that thick skin to be able to kinda step out on
- 13:06those stages and perform in a totally different way than performing, you know, musically?
- 13:12Yes.
- 13:14I mean, there's
- 13:15a lot of differences and a lot of similarities in that realm because you're putting yourself
- 13:19out there for the world to see and judge you like cattle, kind of.
- 13:25And so some people understand it, and some people don't.
- 13:28And and to me, the reason I I even post anything about it at all is not for attention
- 13:37or or anything like that, but for accountability reasons and to inspire others to
- 13:43to do something that's that's challenging.
- 13:45And and and I do get a lot of feedback from from people that say, hey.
- 13:52You you motivate me, and then that that gives me an extra push too.
- 13:57So
- 13:57It It allows you to deal with
- 13:59your question.
- 14:00Right.
- 14:00Well, it'll it allows you to deal with the cesspool of comments.
- 14:03You know, I I've been in some of them to see.
- 14:06But I feel like as musicians and especially female musicians, right, I've been in this
- 14:10industry for twenty five years, and I see the way that female artists get treated in the bars
- 14:15and in these other areas.
- 14:17And I can imagine maybe you're a little more insulated being a member of the of the band in
- 14:22the military, but I can imagine there's plenty of, you know, discrimination and a a lot of
- 14:27things in within our military as well.
- 14:30You know, it's not for the faint of heart on either side of the aisle, but even more so for
- 14:36our female service members and our female members of the music community.
- 14:40It's just a different beast.
- 14:41Sure.
- 14:43You know, and and that still exists to an extent, but it's a lot better.
- 14:47It's a lot better than it used to be.
- 14:49You know, there's a lot of strong women out there that are, you know, changing things and
- 14:53and not putting up with BS, and I'm getting a lot better at that.
- 14:59And if I if I see something or somebody is being inappropriate with me, I call them out on
- 15:04it.
- 15:04And I don't know if you've saw some of those instances, but, you know, we just have to stand
- 15:10up and say this is not okay.
- 15:13And it it's really helpful when there's other males in the industry or just in general that
- 15:21can help back that as well.
- 15:23So but, yeah, it it's not as bad as it used to be, but it it still exists.
- 15:28And I think it always will because, you know, men are a holes, and there's always gonna be
- 15:33that small segment.
- 15:36I who you are.
- 15:38Yeah.
- 15:39Well, it just you know, it's the nature of testosterone, I guess.
- 15:44But, yeah, Kimberly, you got such incredible insights.
- 15:47Just a life well lived, but that always that path less traveled.
- 15:54Right?
- 15:54And that's what I admire so much about you and what you do.
- 15:58And just I'm so inspired by you and motivated to to get busy on my own and to do more to
- 16:05serve my community and to serve my country in in some way.
- 16:09So I wanna thank you for being that for me, You're also a singer songwriter with with a
- 16:17music career aside from your military career.
- 16:21Know that's gotta be thrilling for you.
- 16:23What's been happening with the, you know, music career outside of your outside of the military?
- 16:29Sure.
- 16:31It's an exciting time, and and everything's a learning process, and I I don't feel like I'm
- 16:37there yet.
- 16:37You know?
- 16:38I feel like it's it's always a a hill to climb.
- 16:41But, yeah, I've got several singles out right now.
- 16:46I'm currently working with the Fijak crew in the Midwest and signed with an independent
- 16:56label, United Republic Records, last, let's say, April 2024.
- 17:03And so that's been an exciting time, and I've got a my my latest release called Music City
- 17:10Miseries.
- 17:11This is one that I'm trying to push right now.
- 17:13And I love talking about it because I think it speaks to a lot of the the musicians that are
- 17:19trying to, quote, unquote, make it right now.
- 17:22And a lot of people are, you know, seeing these musicians doing our thing and like, oh, man.
- 17:28You are you are making it.
- 17:30You're working hard.
- 17:31You you must be making a lot of money.
- 17:33And that's just a
- 17:37Nobody's making any money.
- 17:39No.
- 17:41No.
- 17:42We are not.
- 17:42Definitely not from streaming.
- 17:45Well, we are sure working hard, though.
- 17:47Yes.
- 17:49And so and a lot of times that comes with a price to pay, and and that oftentimes is our
- 17:55relationships.
- 17:57And, you know, we we're carrying a lot of baggage, and so that's what that song is about,
- 18:01the false perceptions that we portray.
- 18:06Yeah.
- 18:06The fake it till you make it.
- 18:08We're we're all pretending to be big rock stars.
- 18:10And as much as we want that life, I think integrity is so much more important these days.
- 18:16And the stories are out there.
- 18:17We we know that, you know, the these record companies exist to make money for themselves.
- 18:24They will use and abuse you.
- 18:26And I'm glad that you found an independent label that I hope supports you in a lot of ways
- 18:32and gives you the the time and attention that you deserve and to help you really move along
- 18:37in your career.
- 18:37That that's absolutely thrilling to me to hear that.
- 18:40So congratulations on, on your deal, and and I hope that it just continues to bring more and
- 18:47more success to you.
- 18:48Thank you.
- 18:50Appreciate it.
- 18:51Well, before I let you go, you gotta tell everybody how they can find you and maybe where
- 18:55they can catch a show within you know, before the end of the year here.
- 18:59Absolutely.
- 19:00Thank you for asking.
- 19:02So you can find me.
- 19:03I on all the platforms, obviously, streaming Kimberly Meyer.
- 19:09And then Facebook, Kimberly Meyer music.
- 19:13I have a website, www.kimberlymeyermusic.com.
- 19:19I have Instagram, Kimberly Meyer music.
- 19:21It's all the same handle so you can find me easily.
- 19:27And you gotta keep it easy.
- 19:29Yeah.
- 19:30And oh, you asked about shows.
- 19:32I I have a couple solo acoustic shows coming up, but my entire schedule for the rest of the
- 19:39year and beyond is on my website.
- 19:41So kimberlymeyermusic.com/events.
- 19:46Fantastic.
- 19:47Well, Kimberly, thank you so much for being my friend.
- 19:50These many years now.
- 19:52It feels like I've been following your journey, and thank you for being part of the scene.
- 19:56Yeah.
- 19:57Thank you again for having me.
- 19:58We should do it again sometime.
- 20:00I would love to.
