- 0:04[SPEAKER_01]: We got Bubba in Ham and the house and appreciate you guys joining us this week.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_01]: a 40-70 season and a season of life in the other and a truly baseball history from one of the Koenia Junior.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_01]: There's a drive right on the bat of Evan Barnard who's amazing.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_01]: He is happy.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_01]: He hits this round hard.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_01]: He hits the line of the left.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_01]: Like Trump has ripped them all around.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_01]: What's up, guys?
- 0:49[SPEAKER_01]: Mike Traut.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_01]: We're listening to Sports Park CEO with current Buffland Hand.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_02]: Bubble was happy.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_02]: On to the much man, I did actually have my coffee this morning.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_02]: If you remember the last video, I said I hadn't had my coffee yet.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_02]: Well this morning I did, got the earlier coffee going there, I might go for a cup two today.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_02]: That's the time it did.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_02]: It looks like.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: Let's be honest, that's my third and we are rocking and rolling.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: Don't cut.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, buddy.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm usually about, well, I don't finish the whole cup.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: I usually get about halfway down fill it up halfway down a fill it up.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess in theory if we're mapping on our coffee, we got two cups rolling, but let's start off with a little health tip today for everybody.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_02]: I read it this morning.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_02]: They studied people over a 40 year period of time to drink coffee, and you know what it was like to have that was positive less dementia and Alzheimer's Drew Matt people that drank at least a cup or two of coffee per day dramatically decreased their chance of Dimitra and Alzheimer's and they cognitively were just rolling that's why you're on fire this morning three times We're ready to get away by by
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: I got to say, you look good.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: You look really good.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: I want to compliment you on this.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: I don't own the air one time.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: I made a comment.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: I've figured insulted you internally, so but you look great there.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: You look like you're in the gym, you know, you're flexing.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: You're ready to roll.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: You feel
- 2:08[SPEAKER_02]: It's day by day.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_02]: We're five weeks in on this journey.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_02]: I think I'm down about almost 20 pounds.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm rolling pretty good here.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, well, I mean, that's it's it feels good than that's happening or eating right you live and right trying to keep it all all things point to same direction enough.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_00]: Well, while you're looking good, I'm looking very different myself for those who are watching the video portion of this and saw our video the other day, I've got these glasses on and these are blue light glasses basically, but I'm having to wear them because I'm having some complications from a catarex surgery that I had in December.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: So I had a
- 2:43[SPEAKER_00]: Cataract surgery my left eye or she's my right eye and august my left eye in December and I've developed a condition after that that's like scar tissue basically behind the lens and so I'm waiting on the second opinion, but when I don't wear the glasses, it makes everything in my world like shaky and fluttery because of the light refraction so I've got to wear the glasses to keep my brain from freaking out so that's the glass explanation and then the solid and pepper on the beard is just to make it all tie in with this nice sophistication.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: to fool everybody around me that I actually know what I'm talking about.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_02]: Well, it's like I say, it's um, it's game time.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_02]: Pam, it is, it is the, uh, we've been talking about it.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_02]: Pictures and catchers officially arrived for all of our listeners.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_02]: And it is officially that time for us.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_02]: We've arrived today.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_02]: We're here at our first episode of truly baseball season.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Super Bowl has passed.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_02]: So let's go through the weekly, you're going to lead off here, tell us about your week and then I'll roll into my week and we're giving crank.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's been a busy, busy week on the personal side and on the other business side.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: We are often running at the insurance agency.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: We had added a new producer first of the year.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: So really trying to come out of the gate strong there as always with the industry, just jumping through some hoops and stuff.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the instrument's industry as you grow, the demand on your time becomes more because you're managing more customers, more book of business and stuff, and that's been something that has put less margin for me and you know, put more demand on my time.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm having it kind of grind in there a little bit, but looking forward, I'm actually in the process of trying to hire an assistant right now.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: So that'll really help alleviate things and be a good kind of next step in the growth trajectory.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm super pumped this week because on the other side of my life, which is the speaking and ministry and all those things that I'm passionate about, I'm actually speaking at a leadership retreat, a one day leadership conference at our Cape Fear Community College.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's our local community college.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: And I was asked to speak on the leadership, but I'm actually leading the day off.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: There's four speakers, and it's myself, a couple of other entrepreneurs, and then the sheriff, actually, our county sheriff is gonna be speaking, but we're gonna be talking about leadership.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_00]: And so I've been tasked with talking about the foundations of leadership leading with purpose.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: And going to be really diving into that leading with purpose.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited about that always being front of people and kind of mixing it up there.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: Little Matt wraps up his basketball high school JV basketball schedule this week.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: He's got three games.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: They lost last night, literally at the end of the game dude at the buzzer.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: It was a tough one.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: They lost by three.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: and then they played a night and played again Friday night and they're done.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: And we've got a couple of shows coming up.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: We're excited to be going to Charlotte North Carolina show at the end of the month should be a good turnout there.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: We were contemplating, trying to do Philly.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: We were contemplating, trying to do Nashville.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know,
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: at some point time, the return on the capital investment just doesn't make sense, but we are going to the Dallas card show March 12th through the 14th.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: So it'll be good to get back on the circuit man.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: See a lot of our card buddies and stuff like that.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: So we're looking forward to getting out of the winter doldrums of just kind of being in the house and grinding and moving on on the card front.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: Man, it's been a little bit slow right now.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: You know, strategically, we bought
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: And so, anything we've bought has really just been looking for opportunity.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: We've been clearing out some inventory on our end on the the Hamhouse PC side.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: Really getting some cash ready for these shows.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: So, unless the name of the game, nothing new and exciting.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'll be it.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: I will say this.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: But have you ever purchased a card on eBay and vaulted it immediately with PSA?
- 6:19[SPEAKER_02]: maybe what's it for us, okay.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: So I just did that with a couple of big cow rips and cards in my PC.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_00]: So you purchased it on eBay, you can vault it directly to PSA.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have to pay taxes on that transaction.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: And on a bigger card, it really saves you without having to pay taxes.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: And then you can withdraw that card from the PSA vault for a minimal fee.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: And so I've got three really nice cow rips and junior cards that are part of my PC collection that are incoming.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: I just
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: I'm waiting on those but that was a really easy process and maybe if if any of our listeners are curious about that we can definitely provide some information there because that was fairly smooth transaction.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's a whole conversation we can have for an episode honestly because I've used both bolts of use the fanatics of all over time, I still actively use it.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_02]: I've used the PSA ball.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_02]: I haven't used the PSA ball as much in the last year, so I'm curious to see the growth of that ball.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_02]: There were definitely some early issues there, but I don't know if they figured that was out.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_02]: But that's that's interesting.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_02]: You bring that up.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's a topic we should talk on one day.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_02]: For sure on the on the the week gives the life of Bubba here the last week really just kind of getting into On the personal side at group of being semi retired.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, starting December selling the business second time It's a it's a different world.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's it's a different but I filled that time with really the way I thought I would fill it through other business ventures obviously through cards been extremely busy with the card front
- 7:49[SPEAKER_02]: I've got some other ventures that I have going on.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_02]: We've got some projects going on down to farm, which is pretty normal for me.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_02]: And then, so the personal side is well, my son's basketball season just ended.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_02]: So we have officially moved to baseball front.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_02]: And for those of y'all that I haven't shared this with, and I don't know that I've shared this on the show, I build a hitting facility for my kids.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_02]: We call it the Wilson hit lab.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_02]: And we are spending an incredible
- 8:16[SPEAKER_02]: amount of time over there.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_02]: Some episode, hey, I'm actually get a video and you can play it on the screen so we can see it.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_02]: I've always wanted one.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_02]: Always, I mean, since I was a kid, I mean, it was kind of cool to be a kid to add a batting cage.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_02]: And now it's kind of graduated away from batting cages to like indoor facilities, but any weather, rain, snow, you name it.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_02]: You can still hit pitch, whatever.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_02]: And so this was kind of a love project for me and we finally
- 8:41[SPEAKER_02]: And we are building a little turf field back behind it as well, so excited to kind of share that with any of y'all that are big baseball buffs and training and hitting with your kids and fields kind of like I am.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I want to come in a rut real quick, so so the hamhouse actually went down to the farm and went down to visit a Bubba and family during the all start game last year.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: That's where we rip that case and hit the reds I hear hope and the.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_00]: the gold mechanical.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: If you guys saw that on our channels, but anyway, I roll up to Bubble Wilson Boulevard and over in the left-hand side of the house, there is ladies and gentlemen an entire baseball field just to the left of his house with stadium bleachers and netting and everything.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it was your own little mini if you build it, he will come, feel to dream.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: So where did that thought process even begin, dude?
- 9:30[SPEAKER_02]: You know, honestly, we had an area of our house that we currently live at.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_02]: The hitting facilities built are, we're about to build our next house.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_02]: But for the current house we had out, we wanted to feel, you know, my kids.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_02]: We are yard just was not conducive to really go out there.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_02]: Once my kids got beyond four or five years old to go work, you know, and hit and throw or anything.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_02]: And we just had kind of a slope front yard, a little bit.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_02]: Back yard had a little area of our pool just wasn't conducive.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_02]: And so one day, I'm sitting there drinking my third cup of coffee.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_02]: And looking over the horizon and I see all these trees down there.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, man, this is just wasted land.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_02]: It's just thick lines that we're doing nothing for me on my property.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_02]: And so let's see if we can do this.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_02]: And so we did HOA didn't love it.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_02]: At first, we do live in an A-Rode, like three other homes, and then they were okay with it.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, long story short, we got that done.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_02]: We've loved that field.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_02]: We've had a lot of memories out there.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_02]: My kids and I, and I feel like now, though, with this, the difference between the field, the hitting facility is, I mean, they just love the indoor environment of, with technology, with rap sodas and hit tracks to be able to see your exit velocity and kind of competing against themselves.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_02]: It's been really cool and I'll kind of share that journey with you guys.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_02]: We're probably going to actually create a YouTube channel.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_02]: My kids really want to create a YouTube channel and share like bat reviews and kind of show the facility and things we're doing there.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_02]: So I'll share that along with the journey when we do that.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_02]: But that's really on the personal side.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_02]: Just really getting in that groove and obviously on the health journey I mentioned that continues to go well.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_02]: Very, very locked in on that front.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_02]: But on the sports card side, I can say,
- 11:12[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know that I had been this busy in cards that I can remember in the last six to eight months.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_02]: I went through this kind of uphill climb with cards where I was excited, excited, excited.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_02]: And then I went through a little bit of a dead period there, right near about playoff time last year.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_02]: I needed a little bit of a little burn out, needed a break.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_02]: And I've just been building up to kind of this moment that is here, and what's interesting is, and it's, you know, obviously we're only a couple days beyond the Super Bowl.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_02]: But what's interesting to me is going to be the inventory is not shot up like I thought it would.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_02]: You've seen a couple new cards listed here there, but there's still a ton of holding going on.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, there is still like not the inventory out there that I would expect to me with that.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_02]: That's a good deck.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_02]: The fact that the inventory has not been flooded out there is going to make the demand high and I've already seen it.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I saw the post the day after Super Bowl.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_02]: It's officially baseball season.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_02]: It's baseball time.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_02]: It's, you know, you everybody's birds are chirping.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody's ready to go.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_02]: Once pictures and catchers kind of get through
- 12:17[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I expect about how we get the first to march.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_02]: I expect a lot more than in toy to hit the market.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm excited to see what's going to happen here.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's set up for a really, really strong spring.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_02]: I'm excited to see what's going to happen here.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's interesting, man, you know, and this is something I want to talk about on today's episode is there's a lot of people who, you know, they don't recognize that there are not a lot of people who have the ability to hold long so like, you know, if they're looking for inventory, they don't necessarily go buy it last year and then stash it away and then sell it, you know, into the season.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_00]: they're actively selling during the seasons because when you're at these shows, these events, these vendors, when you look at, I've said this in the last episode, is there's now corporate involvement, whether it's to exporting goods, whether it's repack companies, whether it's, you know, whatever, you know, whatnot streamers.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there's so many people right now that need inventory.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_00]: And they generally tend to flock toward inventory that's in season.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_00]: you know, it's kind of like, uh, I think of it like this.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_00]: If you go to like Belk, I mean, in our neighborhoods, the Belk is the department store or dealers or whatever.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: If you walk into Belk in the summertime, they ain't got a lot of sweaters.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: And if they do, they're over in the discount rack, right?
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: And if you walk into Belk in January, they ain't got a lot of, you know, pink, uh, you know, tulips shirts that you can unbutton to the third button and where
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: My point is, is be smart and recognize that, you know, retail tends to follow a season.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_00]: And so these these ideas that we have about cards and markets, they're not just us like pontificating from our offices, they're based around real business strategies and structures.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they're tends to follow the season flow.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: And we're entering into baseball season.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: So you're going to see an uptick in the purchase of baseball cards, baseball cards being on the radar, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what drives the market.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: So again, it's not just this wishful thinking.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_00]: We're just like, you know, one of these days this card's going to increase.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's like we're buying with strategy based on this seasonal thing.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: And it is showing that it's working.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_02]: Well, yeah, and it's, um, there's certain things you can take that have happened every single year over the last five years.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_02]: I'm a student of really anything I'm involved in, I want to, I want to study.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_02]: Now they came here a little bit the same way, very analytical.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_02]: And when you look over the last five years of this space, there's one thing you can guarantee.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely one thing you can guarantee.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_02]: When football season is about to begin, and it's training camp, football is king.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_02]: And it is all the attention on football.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_02]: And when it is baseball, it is spring training in the seasons about a star baseball is king.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_02]: And it's happened every single year.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_02]: And what's interesting to me, and it's this is the part that I don't pretend to know right now, is will we have a 2.0 last year?
- 15:11[SPEAKER_02]: Will we have what I will say we had never seen before when we had mentioned that on previous episodes about where the market just continued to rise and rise and rise we saw that happen again this fall in winter same replication of what the previous year was and honestly this year was probably even a little stronger.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_02]: as we got through January.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_02]: I think December was kind of hit or miss when you look at some sales.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_02]: Some guys were kind of staying hot, but January felt to me at least the middle part of January felt hot to me in this industry.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_02]: And now it kind of feels like we've hit this like hot.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_02]: And we've got to hit this middle zone and we're going to peek out here and then we're going to roll again is kind of what I feel but what I don't pretend to know is what's going to happen come April 15 May 15 June 15 my gut tells me we're going to see a similar kind of rise as we saw last year, but I think it's also going to go back the way it has been now in the NFL the NFL is 100% come this way.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_02]: If you perform, your cards will absolutely perform.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_02]: Now, a lot of this show is about prospects, right?
- 16:25[SPEAKER_02]: And so, it's hard to kind of see their performance the same way you see the MLB every single night on ESPNL's portion.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_02]: right you have to go in the box stores and it takes a little more time to kind of get all that information out there.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_02]: So that that peak in fall may be a month behind the MLB.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_02]: It may be a may first may 15th time of move and shuffle there, but there's no doubt the guys that are in the MLB in my opinion, we it opening day.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_02]: If you are banking on a guy at that point and you are holding him of opening day, you are banking on his performance.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_02]: There is no doubt about it.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_02]: And so I just want to make sure that's understood when we talk about players, there's times to prospect and really work those guys and say, this is a prospect, this is a guy that I think I love what his potential is, his perspective market.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_02]: And then there is the time to say, I want to buy this guy because he's going to perform.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_02]: There's a big difference in my mind and prospecting, and then predicting performance.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, probably.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_02]: Both of those, you can make a lot of money on.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_02]: But on the performance side, you have to understand when you take that vet, it is a lot more abrupt rise and fall.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_02]: If you are correct, it's going way up.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_02]: If it's going when, if you're wrong, it's going way down.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_02]: And it takes guys that are on the outskirts, the guys that are on the obscurity.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to use a guide, for example, like a Christian Campbell of last year.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_02]: Right, everybody was by in Christian Campbell.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_02]: He's got a forgotten guy right now.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to take Christian Campbell to come out and really, really perform to get his stuff to move.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_02]: And it be does perform.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be just like it once.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_02]: People are going to say, oh, he's back.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_02]: But if you've been in the league for seven or eight years, and you haven't really got it done, it's gonna take a lot to move your knee.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_02]: You might move it a little bit, 10 to 20% because people are watching you every night and they're on the favor team, but if you're looking for the big swing, the Cal Raleigh type swings, you gotta have Cal Raleigh type performances.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_00]: So if you're in early in your career, I mean, if you look at guys like Manima Chateau, Mookie, Betts, Freddie Freeman, Tray Turner, like those types of guys, these guys that are their perennial all stars, they've won championships, they have batting titles, gold gloves, all this kind of stuff.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_00]: You're in a spot there where those cards really aren't going to change.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_00]: they're just going to continue to be collected, so the availability of them is going to be lower until they make the hall of fame or whatever.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_00]: So understanding the movement of the card market for the prospect into
- 19:07[SPEAKER_00]: the debut into the early major league career into the established major league career is a really, really key factor that we all think about when we're we're getting into this.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: And we deal mostly in the prospects pre debut.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_00]: And like you said, you can have two or three peaks before a guy ever debut.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I saw a guy the other day, Baba.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_00]: He was going over the
- 19:34[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, we know crypto for those who follow crypto is in the tank right now.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_00]: But what you saw was a little bit of a rebound at the beginning of February, almost to the tune of 2025 percent.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_00]: Well, this can I went back to every crypto bull and bear market and sure enough in early February, there's about a 20% peak.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_00]: you know he basically said this is how you time this and I have a buddy of mine who went and dropped you know I think it was like 30 grand into crypto thing it popped up 20% he cashed out and it because he was planning on these traditional market
- 20:13[SPEAKER_00]: movement dynamics.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I'm relating the card market to a trading market and I think people that miss out on the reality of that are just this, they're so like a horse with blinders on that they don't realize that the same dynamics that influence buying and selling and market and investing and it applies to the sports card industry.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_00]: And so what we're doing is saying listen guys, take the blinders off, you're like, I like this guy, I just want to collect this card and I'm going to hold it forever.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: No, that's fine if that's who you are and I'm not picking on you.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_00]: But there are a lot of people who get in this one track mine and they think this is how you and we're saying, no man, there's an entire buffet that you can feast at and get in, get out, move up, down, boom, boom, boom, boom, and then you can go buy a guy.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_00]: if you really like him at some later point in time.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that taking this to heart and rising up to the reality of markets, is something that would benefit the average card collector, because I think most people are naive or ignorant to the fact
- 21:25[SPEAKER_00]: That the card hobby and market follows similar patterns and you nailed it on the head bubble when you said that you know there's a difference between investing in a performance and investing in a prospect versus just buy in somebody that you really like and you want to have that card 10 years down the road and say anyway there's just a little kind of on top of what you said there.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_02]: Well, two other topics I want to touch on there that you hit on first off on somebody asked me this yesterday, and I want to thank you.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_02]: It was a good question.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_02]: They said, do you think the world baseball classic can influence somebody's card prices?
- 22:01[SPEAKER_02]: And it's an absolute slam dunk answer.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_02]: They can and they will.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_02]: I haven't story for that, by the way.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_02]: Trich Turner.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_02]: You want to tell the Trich Turner story?
- 22:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_02]: Tell them to tell them to tell this.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_00]: Little Matt and I early in charge, right?
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: We're young into cards.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_00]: We had had our first round of Bowman, right?
- 22:19[SPEAKER_00]: We were feeling like we were the kings of Bowman because we had gotten into 22 Bowman draft and we were buddy.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we had we sold it.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: Ivan Melinda's true green for $400 and we had sold, you know, all these random Walter Ford, we had sold a purple for $200.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_00]: We were just like, oh, man, boom, it is best.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_00]: And we had a an orange of Tyler Lockleer for the Seattle Mariners.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_00]: And we sold it actually to his future father-in-law.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_00]: And we sold the card for like $1,500.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: And we're like,
- 22:52[SPEAKER_00]: 1500 dollars for a baseball card.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_00]: This is amazing, you know, and we're like, we love Tray Turner.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_00]: What are Tray Turner's cards do?
- 23:00[SPEAKER_00]: And all the sudden we're looking at Tray Turner's cards are like, man, he's cheaper than these other guys.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like, Tray Turner's orange is half of what Jackson holiday's orange is.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_00]: Tray Turner's the man.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_00]: He's going into fillet this year dude, he's at the World Baseball Classic.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_00]: And if you remember,
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: Turn it's a grand slam in the World Baseball Classic to send Team USA into the final or whatever, bro.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_00]: We went and snapped bought an orange tray turn for $4200 and we were so excited.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_00]: Dude, I got that card in and I was like, this is the most beautiful card I've ever owned.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: Dude, I sold that card that summer for $2,200 because it went FOOM, his stuff just went FOOM, and then he comes out and filly that year and really struggled the first half of the season.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, I hate you, Tray Turner.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_02]: Was it that the the year where the fans like, yes, I started cheering for him and stuff to like build his bat is batting average back up like he started hitting again when they started cheering for him for the bats and stuff.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, 100%.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_00]: So my biggest loss on a sports card of all time is a tray turner orange that I bought at the World Baseball Classic.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_00]: sold it at the national and it taught me the greatest lesson though that I've ever learned.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_00]: And that is this whole concept we're talking about, performance, performance, performance.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: When you get caught up in the current hype, you better watch it out because you can get burned.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_00]: Now, head tray turner, come out with the fillies that year and start of the season off, you know, batten 330 and hit a couple of bombs.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think that for
- 24:36[SPEAKER_00]: K-Card would have pushed up to around 5, 5, 5, 500 or whatever.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_00]: Instead, it went to the tank and now a trade turner orange PSA 10 might be a $2,000 court.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so to finish this thought on what you mentioned earlier about markets, because I do want to hit on this.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_02]: We talk about players in their time window.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_02]: We talk about it all the time.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_02]: There's a guy his price was that he was a prospect that was here.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, and his price is here.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_02]: Did he hit these different markets of time?
- 25:05[SPEAKER_02]: I want to mention a guy from Cisco Lindor who did who is one of the most unique situations that I think I've seen in the hobby.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_02]: Friends, Cisco Lindor probably three years ago, three and a half years ago,
- 25:19[SPEAKER_02]: You could have bought true reds for, and I mean, I did, I mean, for five, six, seven thousand dollars, okay?
- 25:26[SPEAKER_02]: I was buying his cards for next to nothing, okay, and I was sitting there at the time wondering, like, why is this guy so cheap?
- 25:34[SPEAKER_02]: He kind of fallen out of favor, almost a little bit.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not going to say to Leo Levo, because Blindor was cheaper than Julio, but almost got in the same thing.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_02]: Well, then Lindor had his big year, okay, where he finished second in the MVP, I think like two years ago, and his stuff instantly, that season, I mean, a meteoric rise.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I'm talking live seven, eight, nine hundred percent.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_02]: And once that moment in time happened he's then put together a couple more really solid years after nothing crazy just really solid good baseball years now all the sudden his prices old firm and he's now submitted in this top level and I think it's just something to realize when you look at a couple of these guys we talked about guys like James would before we talked about guys like Ronald 18 yet.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_02]: When you're done of bank on performance, sometimes if you're depending on the whole you had, it may be a longer hope.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_02]: If you truly believe that is the guy, and he eventually has one of those top three in the MVP seasons, his stuff's going to them, it has been there before.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_02]: And I just think that's something to mention because it, and it doesn't happen aloften.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's not something I can get sight.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_02]: 50 different occasions though, but it does happen every season.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_02]: You see those guys that are having that big season, and all of a sudden, you get you to hell on to them, which I did not do with Lindor, I would have taken that ride.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_02]: Instead, I sold down in the doldroms.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_02]: and I'm just an opportunity.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_02]: Very similar to Bobby Whitt, another guy that I knew was really good.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_02]: And so, those were just some occasions where, and I'm not sitting here telling you to hold every single card you have and I got you have conviction in, but if you've got those guys you're going, hey man, I really, really take this guy's gonna be great.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe hold one.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe you just put one aside, so you know what, that really well on this player, I'm just going to set him over here and, hey, I know you talk about that sometimes, taking regains with players and almost being sitting there free with somebody to where you can free roll the rest of the way.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think that's a bad idea on some of these guys we have sitting here, because there's some real talent coming in the pipeline.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_02]: So that's what they want to hit on.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_02]: The second thing is the stock market analogy.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_02]: I love the stock market analogy to cards, because it reminds me of
- 27:54[SPEAKER_02]: I love the stock market.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_02]: I love cars.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_02]: They very much correlate intriguing to me is people don't give it the credit and sports cards.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm going to call the S&P 500 the height market in baseball.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_02]: When the masses arrive, that's what I've been talking about for the last month or two.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_02]: When the masses arrive to baseball, the S&P 500 will do what?
- 28:17[SPEAKER_02]: Right?
- 28:18[SPEAKER_02]: It's the same thing that happens overnight right now in this market.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_02]: This stock market has been crazy.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_02]: AI is the boom.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_02]: AI is everything.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_02]: AI is the boom.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_02]: AI is the boom.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_02]: Then all of a sudden, somebody comes out and goes, hey, real quick.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_02]: AI might be the boom, but do you see how much money people are spinning on AI?
- 28:36[SPEAKER_02]: Do you see that making they're not going to be able to monetize that the same way?
- 28:39[SPEAKER_02]: Well, guess what now?
- 28:40[SPEAKER_02]: Anything tied to AI has gone back down, right?
- 28:43[SPEAKER_02]: And now all the sudden there's these swings of highs and lows in these markets because of volatility.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_02]: And to me, when you look at these cards right now and you look at the pressure behind the S&D 500 of the card market, it's just got a good ticking, it's got a ticking, it's going sideways, and then there's this pressure behind it.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_02]: I think that the more you can do that favor for yourself, who is going ask yourself this?
- 29:09[SPEAKER_02]: Who is going to push to be the pressure behind this player that I'm holding?
- 29:13[SPEAKER_02]: are the masses going to come to this guy that's going to hit 12 home runs and back to 70, absolutely not.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_02]: So when you're buying a card, you have to ask yourself that, why are the investors going to push this guy forward?
- 29:28[SPEAKER_02]: There's got to be that part of that player that they can get there.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm telling you, that's what pushes card markets.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_02]: That's why Ellie Delicruz went,
- 29:38[SPEAKER_02]: because of what his potential was.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_02]: So, I was just a thought, and I'll let it go back to you here.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so, you know, it was funny when you were talking earlier, a phrase literally came to my mind and the phrase was price familiarity.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, oh, I wonder if that's a thing and I looked it up on my phone.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_00]: It is a thing.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's actually a literal consumer topic.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_00]: Price familiarity refers to the degree of knowledge, experience, and confidence a consumer has regarding the typical or reasonable price of a specific product or brand.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: It acts as a mental benchmark that consumers use to evaluate whether a current price is fair or a good deal.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_00]: One of the things that plays into cars that people don't realize is price familiarity, okay?
- 30:19[SPEAKER_00]: We've talked about this before.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_00]: When people want to
- 30:22[SPEAKER_00]: dump on this idea of us and Connor's pricing and all this kind of stuff, Connor Griffin's pricing, we use price familiarity when you look at former number ones and key performers, okay?
- 30:37[SPEAKER_00]: So when you look at Jackson Holiday Golds, when you look at Elie De La Cruz Golds, when you look at other top-jack-cagly-owned golds, when you look at other debuting prospects, when you look at other key number one prospects, there's a price familiarity in the market where a consumer goes, huh?
- 30:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think this is a buy because that guy got to this price point, okay?
- 31:04[SPEAKER_00]: One reason that drives the value and how you understand value.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_00]: Thereily, if you have a guy like James Wood and Wood might not be the best example, or maybe a white link for somebody like that, who they peaked out and let's say a gold PSA 10 did 6k.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: And now a gold PSA 10 is sitting at like 2500.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_00]: There's a price familiarity for that player at 6k, meaning that the market bought that guy at 6k because they thought it was value and so if there is performance, if there is the underlying substance of what makes a card valuable if that kicks back in price familiarity will come back into play.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_00]: And so this is how we look at the card market.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_00]: This is how, you know, if you want to be on the edge of the card game, if you want to be a card CEO, what we talk about on the show, this is the kind of stuff we bring into the conversation.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_00]: Like this is a show, Baba, where like people should be taking notes.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_00]: And they should be doing market analysis and stuff and had you been doing this over the course of the last year with these strategies.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_00]: This is why, and here's the thing I want to, you know, to bring this to the table because we've been super transparent about our business and how we operate or whatever.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_00]: Basically 48 cards sold last month and over 48 cards we did almost 30% return on those cards.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and so again as I'm telling you this we're telling you this as like
- 32:45[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, a case study like we're telling you this because we're doing it.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we're telling you this and trying to say like, Hey, you know, there's there's data behind what what's being given to you that that's teaching you how to excel and be successful in this game that we love this hobby that we love.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_00]: Because the reality is man, there's a lot of naysayers, there's a lot of negativity, there's a lot of noise in the market right now, there's a lot of noise in the world right now.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_00]: And at some point in time, you just have to blur the landscape and you just have to keep doing what you do and do it well and just not get in the ring with all the drama.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's us just kind of saying hey guys, this is what we're doing, this is why we're doing it and here's the proof in the pudding.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_02]: Well, yeah, so, man, you're hitting some good points today.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_02]: They're kind of open to my mind up.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_02]: So, market familiarity.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_02]: Let's go through some names with Paul Skietz.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_02]: Change everything on pitch.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_02]: Before it was, don't ever buy pitchers.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_02]: Don't ever buy pitchers.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_02]: Don't ever buy pitchers.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_02]: You won't make money on.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_02]: Paul Skietz changed that.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_02]: Probably forever, at least in the near term there.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_02]: You look at Mr. Osteel last year.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_02]: You look at the money that was made there.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_02]: You look at your savage.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_02]: You can go down the line of the pitchers that you could have made money with in the last,
- 33:57[SPEAKER_02]: Let's just call it 18 months.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_02]: You post Paul skiing's hysteria.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_02]: He's kind of set the familiarity now for what a picture can do.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_02]: He's the benchmark.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, I don't think really anybody could disagree with that.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_02]: Now we go to the position players.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_02]: And you look at Sean Hayat's on it.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he's setting international, breaking international barriers with buyers, sellers, market, his market is setting a new limit.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_02]: for baseball cards.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_02]: He is by far in a way, the best thing that's ever happened to baseball cards.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_02]: Not cards in general, baseball cards.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_02]: The amount of eyes now that see this market because of a tonic, he is setting the bar for that market.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_02]: Well then you go below that now and you start looking at some of these other names.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_02]: And you start saying, market familiarity with these players, here's where their current prices are, here's where they could potentially go.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_02]: Behind the Tony is Judge, then you've got soda, then you've got wit, then you've got guys like it.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_02]: I'm kind of going down different levels of player here, not further level of play necessarily, but for where their cards kind of trick.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_02]: And then you get the guys like Ellie that are kind of here in the middle and what he's done and you got guys like Jay Rod, who are still young, but people are still kind on the fence.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_02]: A guy like Jay Rod, for example, his prices got absolutely, you know, really good year last year in his prices went down, struggling a little bit in the playoffs.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_02]: Now look what's happening.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_02]: All the sudden with Jay Rod, only if everybody's going to be noticing, the prices are starting to go back up, because people are going, hey, maybe this is a france to stolen door moment here, maybe this guy's gotten slept on a little bit.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_02]: This is where you got to have your own brain, and you've got to block everything else out.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_02]: Um, a year ago, a year and a half ago, everybody would have told you, don't buy anybody that's an Oakland.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_02]: Nobody buys the eights.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_02]: Look at Jacob.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_02]: Well, look at Nick curves.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_02]: They would have told you don't buy the royals three years ago, prior to body width.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_02]: Look at body width.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_02]: Look at Jack Cagley out.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_02]: They want to told you don't buy the first basements.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_02]: Look at Nick curves.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_02]: Look at Jack Cagley out.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_02]: So my point is you've got to have your own brain in the space, you've got to have your own convictions and it's the same time now.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_02]: When it comes to these guys, you also on the flip side of it have to be able to say, hey, this is where the market has been on these guys before.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_02]: This is where now we've seen the peaks of first basement.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_02]: Where does this guy that I'm going to buy?
- 36:25[SPEAKER_02]: Who's gonna, does he have the push?
- 36:28[SPEAKER_02]: Does he have the flash?
- 36:29[SPEAKER_02]: Does he have the power?
- 36:31[SPEAKER_02]: Does he have the back to be what on paying for it?
- 36:35[SPEAKER_02]: That is the key question I ask on every prospect in my head.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_02]: Does that person have the juice that's worth the squeeze?
- 36:43[SPEAKER_02]: There's only in my mind five to 10 guys right now in my mind that are prospects that have juice that this is squeeze.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_02]: Now that will not that will change.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_02]: That number will change drastically
- 36:55[SPEAKER_02]: There'll be guys that fall off that list.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_02]: There'll be guys that are out into it.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_02]: But I'm gonna tell you a guy right now, it's coming to mind right now.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_02]: And he's sitting here on my desk.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna pull him out here of this path.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_02]: Because he was my guy a year ago.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_02]: And he's kind of falling in this forgotten trap because there's so many other people that we're talking about.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_02]: But he's young, he's got the ability, he's got the flash.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm not going to tell you to go buy eggs.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_02]: I don't want to hear what the haters are going to say.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, you're trying to build this, Barquette.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_02]: No, I'm just telling you a thought here of a guy that, and he's, and it is not cheap, but his prices have gotten substantially cheaper than where they were this time of year ago.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_02]: And he had a pretty darn solid season, Jackson Churrier.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_02]: He was the guy we were talking about a year ago.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I heard me hardly talk about him on the show recently.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_02]: He was all the rage a year ago.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_02]: Is he a bad player?
- 37:44[SPEAKER_02]: Heck no.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_02]: is he going to be a great player?
- 37:46[SPEAKER_02]: I think so.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_02]: I really, really do, and he's forgotten right now.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_02]: He's kind of sitting in a forgotten territory.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_02]: I saw 499, I think the other day went for, I don't know, 6, 700 bucks.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_02]: You know, something like that.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_02]: And so when you start seeing that, then you have to ask yourself, if Cheerio becomes so dope, what is the price for familiarity with that title player?
- 38:08[SPEAKER_02]: If he becomes a Cunia, what is the price similarity with that type of player?
- 38:12[SPEAKER_02]: That's a great thought.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_02]: When you look at players, you start camping out who could they be.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_02]: If you're looking at a guy and he's the next straight turner, then you kind of know where his prices may end up.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_00]: Well, what's interesting about this, too, is you have to, you know, you have to recognize that tray Turner when his cards came out, you know, in 20, whatever it was, he did not have the hype.
- 38:35[SPEAKER_00]: Nor was the market what it is today, that tray Turner's price point.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_00]: It never went parabolic.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_00]: So it's really hard to justify getting his price points above prices that people are comfortable with.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and it takes a judge to do that.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_00]: Three MVP's, you know, show hey, that's why their cards have gone parabolic because you're putting three and four MVP's on top of, oh, wow.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_00]: So, but here's what's happened.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_00]: New players that come out, the bar is already set higher.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_00]: Dude, you've got guys coming out of the rip right now on Bowman, whose oranges are doing $1,500.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_00]: And the reason why is because with the current market price familiarity based on prospects and based on the market is going to be that demand.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_00]: Are people stupid for paying those prices?
- 39:26[SPEAKER_00]: maybe, maybe not.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's all about the familiarity and the consumer's idea of, okay, this is where this trends.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_00]: Because people all at time go, I'm comparing these prospect cards to Francisco Lendor Orange.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_00]: And they're not, you know, and I'm like, I get that.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_00]: But the point being is that the older players, what you had is people who got into those cards at really, really low numbers, and they would rather hold the card if they're net into it for a thousand bucks.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 39:57[SPEAKER_00]: Then they would have to go out and sell it for 10 grand, but could not replace it because they don't want to replace it at 10 grand.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_00]: So there's so many nuances into the market that people have to understand, it's not just as simple as you're crazy to pay that for a prospect when this guy's cards do that.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, it's not what you think it is.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_00]: There's so many different nuances that go into what makes the market and the more that you can understand it, the better off you'll do.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_02]: Well, yeah, and I mean, I think it's key to say this after, you know, we're not even really alluding to what happened, you know, in this episode today at all over the last week, but I think it's key to say this.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_02]: I've seen so much chatter lately in the last four to six weeks.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_02]: Um, in the Bowman community that I have in a long time.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_02]: And I think it's just key to say this, uh, you got to have your own brain.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_02]: You got to have your own brain when you listen to this show.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_02]: You got to have your own brain when you listen to anybody that's out there.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_02]: Matt, you're probably a point of having taking notes.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_02]: You take the tidbits that are ham maybe on a eater today and he may give you a nugget.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_02]: that you should write down, because you know what, that's going to be great for my business.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe I'm on a heater that day, and I'm providing the great.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_02]: But when you start allowing the noise, and I have felt this a little bit lately for myself, and I told him this this week, when you start allowing other people's noise to get in your head, he starts allowing you not to think as clearly as you should about what you're doing in your
- 41:27[SPEAKER_02]: When you come to this show, come here with a, with a pin and pad, like you mentioned right down the nuggets that are good and then build it into your own convictions build it into your own we're going to try to provide to you where we think we see value we're going to try to provide you what we think, but I'm going to tell you just like the best hitters that are very hit in the major leagues, they don't hit get ahead every single time and we're not going to get hits every single time we're going to get it wrong sometimes.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, as well.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I have made my fair share of misses in this hobby, but I do think you've got to block the noise of the other chapter in an industry because here's the reality.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_02]: There are a lot of guys that are out here that are trying to create chatter for the room benefit.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_02]: The fact that they're going on there and they're making the post and they're saying the things they're doing, I promise you they're not doing it for your own benefit generally speaking.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_02]: I promise you, that's not, they didn't wake up that morning.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_02]: You know what, I'm going to make this pose because I think it's going to help these people.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_02]: They're bringing it because they've got their own conviction or their own their own in, basically, they're in motivation to why they're saying what they're saying.
- 42:35[SPEAKER_02]: And so, you know, I said it from the get guy with this show, we really try to genuinely bring this look created this show.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_02]: This is us just having a conversation, Pam and I, this is really how we treat this show.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_02]: And we're on this show, we literally want to bring the exact conversations we would have as friends about what we're doing in our sports star hobby.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_02]: Whether you agree with it, whether you don't like it, that's how we're going to bring it.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_02]: And it was one of the number one rules down when we created this show.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_02]: If you don't remember it, I said, I cannot do this show if we're not real.
- 43:09[SPEAKER_02]: Remember that?
- 43:10[SPEAKER_02]: I've said it time and time again, and we're going to bring it real on this show.
- 43:14[SPEAKER_02]: Whether we're always right or wrong or going to be wrong sometimes, and so, but what I will tell you is don't let any noise come into your business.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_02]: But what I would do when you're looking at your business is try to look at the analytical side of what you're doing.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_02]: Look at the facts.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_02]: Look at the price from the area.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_02]: Look at and ask yourself the question, what is going to push this investment on the bottom?
- 43:40[SPEAKER_02]: Because buying cards can be an addiction.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_02]: It can be, I've been there.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_02]: And I've got the same, I've got the same rat brain is everybody else.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_02]: But I'll wake up in the morning.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_02]: I want to look at cards and I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll love the bind.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_02]: I love just like, I'm, I'll love to buy the next car.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_02]: But what I've had to start doing is I'm just putting my own codes in my head.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_02]: Where does this cut?
- 44:02[SPEAKER_02]: Where is the in-result of this car?
- 44:04[SPEAKER_02]: If I just click it and I buy it and I don't know where I'm going with it, I'm gonna loot money.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_02]: I got to know I'm buying this car and this is the end result of what I'm doing.
- 44:14[SPEAKER_02]: If I'm going to buy it to hold it and I lose money, at least I had the plan to hold it, at least I had a plan.
- 44:20[SPEAKER_02]: But if I'm just buying it because it was shiny, it was there and it just hit me in the impulse, I'm going to lose money most of the time.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_02]: Have a plan, yeah, promise you if you have a plan, you try to stick to that plan, you'll do a lot better off most of the time.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_00]: Well, there's also this interesting thing is like, you know, I don't think that there's anybody, you know, I take, I want to say take offense because, you know, I like to think that I am unoffendable, honestly, and that call me arrogant, whatever, I'd like to think that I'm unoffendable because I am emotionally stable enough and confident in.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_00]: You know, who God's made me to be and the heart that he's given me, that I am not subjected to your opinions of me.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's a place that I've had to get to.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: As being a speaker on a stage and a consultant in front of a lot of people and, you know, I mean, like, I've lived this life.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm kind of like, come at me.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't really bother me.
- 45:11[SPEAKER_00]: But the word that gets you sometimes is, you know, righteous.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_00]: This word was used at us, righteous.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_00]: and it's interesting because I can't think of a time when any of us have claimed to be righteous or self-righteous.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we put ideas out into the space and I'm kind of like, listen, man, one of the things about a creator that is very, very important.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_00]: And listen.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_00]: I wrote a book.
- 45:36[SPEAKER_00]: I put my heart and soul into a book over the course of six months of my life and I put it out into the atmosphere.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_00]: And before anyone wants to come at me, do you know what that feels like?
- 45:48[SPEAKER_00]: Do you know that it feels like to put six months of your heart into a written word that cannot be undone?
- 45:53[SPEAKER_00]: and then put it out there in front of the world to blow it up, criticize it, whatever.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_00]: So like, I'm sitting here going, guys, I've lived this life.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_00]: I lived that life 10 years ago when I was in my early 30s.
- 46:04[SPEAKER_00]: And now I'm 44.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_00]: I got salt and pepper in my beard.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not really swayed and how you come at me.
- 46:11[SPEAKER_00]: But you want to use this word righteous.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I don't think as a creator, you just have to do what you're convicted about.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_00]: and you've got to be honest with it and if you're not being honest and you don't have conviction then you're fake and it's going to fade.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_00]: But if you're honest and you have conviction and you go create that is you putting something out there and then you leave the left rest up to the world like whatever happens happens.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_00]: And so again we're not claiming to have all the answers here
- 46:45[SPEAKER_00]: who got it right or whatever.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_00]: This is just how we think and how we work.
- 46:49[SPEAKER_00]: You know, there's a great encouragement from the book of Nehemiah, and I love this.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_00]: The book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah has been called to go and rebuild the temple that's been destroyed.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_00]: And as he's working on the temple, there's these guys.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_00]: Sand ballot is his name.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_00]: And Sand Ballet comes by and he's like, how are you possibly going to rebuild that?
- 47:09[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you're taking one stone at a time.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_00]: And they're basically trash talking Nehemiah.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_00]: And Nehemiah looks at him and he's going, I'm doing a great work.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_00]: I can't mess with you, basically.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to give my time and attention to you.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_00]: So my encouragement to anyone who's doing something out there that you believe in is keep going.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_00]: Keep doing the thing that you have conviction of and keep being honest about it.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what, you know, it takes
- 47:33[SPEAKER_00]: to be an entrepreneur, to be a business person.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: There's plenty of times you're gonna have the opportunity to throw in the towel, let the naysayers get you down, all this kind of stuff, but you have to have some level of persistence to keep pushing through all that.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_00]: So sorry I hit the preach button there, but that's just, I'll be nice.
- 47:50[SPEAKER_02]: Beal.
- 47:50[SPEAKER_02]: You nailed it though, I mean, this does, this sports car CEO, but this does apply to your sports car business, this does apply to any business.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, no doubt about it, it becomes, and I didn't find this out from me about myself.
- 48:05[SPEAKER_02]: I knew of the athlete most of my life, but when sports were over, I was searching for something.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_02]: I was searching for what was next.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_02]: And business happened to be what was next for today.
- 48:15[SPEAKER_02]: And I didn't find this out about myself to my mid to late 20s.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_02]: But I, what I did and I didn't realize it till now.
- 48:21[SPEAKER_02]: So late, I can almost tell you 20 years later, a roadmap that I had to figure out for myself.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_02]: The reason that I think I was successful for 20 years.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_02]: Now it was because that was that much smarter than anybody else.
- 48:32[SPEAKER_02]: Or better or righteous.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you fellow fam, whoever you are.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_02]: But I wanted it.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_02]: it burned in my belly every single day that we wanted to do something special.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_02]: And it wasn't just me.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_02]: It took a group of other people that went around me and said, you know what, I see your vision.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_02]: I wanted to do something special too alongside of you.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_02]: And that's what it takes in anything that you want to do.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_02]: I don't care if you're, I don't care if you're listening to this show and you're 12 years old, you're 20 years old or you're 80 years old.
- 49:02[SPEAKER_02]: If you want to be successful in business, you want to be successful in sports, you want to be successful in life, you have to have that burning thing inside your gut that no one else can tell you because the naysayer is always going to tell you that you can't do it and your own brain at times is going to tell you you can't do it.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_02]: your biggest thing and get yourself at times may be yourself.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_02]: And you've got to wake up every day and put those shoes on and know that that thing that you're seeking, that thing that you're driving for, that thing that's at the end of that rainbow is worth it.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and that's when you look at any successful person.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_02]: I'm actually reading a book right now by Barbara Teller on sports psychology.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_02]: It's, he talks about the subconscious mind.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_02]: How to be able to have the subconscious mind for form for you.
- 49:50[SPEAKER_02]: And it's that you do something so many times over and over and over and over again that you allow that.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_02]: And when you wake up every day in that conviction is still burning in your belly, it works for you.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_02]: And I just wanted to share that because I think that, I mean, I see my own kids and sports baseball is so mental.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_02]: And you can have one at that.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_02]: affect the rest of your weekend.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_02]: You can have one bad at back and Mike Trout talked about on our podcast.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_02]: If you've gotten a mindset that poor pitiful me, I struck out, guess what's coming the next day back?
- 50:24[SPEAKER_02]: If you're not in there going, you know what, I'm ready to knock this thing right back up the middle every single time, whether it be sports or baseball, you're probably going to have a lot of failure coming your way.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, that's what I want about sports to is, you know, raising boys and, you know, watching them play, you know, there's a kid in our, our son's game last night, they got a technical file because he got a steel at mid court and then he went and made the lay up in a course, he had a turnaround and he had to chatter to the other player about it and I'm like, bro, this is where you see a lot of people chatter when they're insecure a lot of people chatter.
- 50:57[SPEAKER_00]: when they lack confidence, right?
- 50:59[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of people chatter when they're dealing with their own anger or whatever.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_00]: And so what you have to do is be self-aware enough to not enter into the ring and kind of clap back.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_00]: And that is a great level of maturity.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_00]: And again, you think about, you know, these professional athletes on these great stages when these players go to bat and it's like,
- 51:20[SPEAKER_00]: the guy on the right field bleachers said I suck, you know, and he's like no, he goes out there and he he'll hit a ball or whatever, and he doesn't need to, you know, taunt and all that kind of stuff.
- 51:32[SPEAKER_00]: So there's something to be said for having confidence in yourself, but like you're talking about, there's something to be said about having a goal worth, you know, pursuing something that keeps you passionate every day, something that keeps you getting up, something that keeps you going back to the well, you know, and that's, that's where it is.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_00]: And for me, honestly, I told
- 51:50[SPEAKER_00]: If cards ever get to a point where it's not worth it, I could lay it down tomorrow and I could be completely fine because it is not my identity, it's not who I am.
- 52:03[SPEAKER_00]: And so again, this is this space of processing, you know what I mean?
- 52:08[SPEAKER_00]: When you get so wrapped up sometimes in the things that you do or whatever it's easy to kind of get sucked in and you know it's it's understandable but for me, you know, I do it because I love to do it.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_00]: I do it because I get the poor into my son.
- 52:20[SPEAKER_00]: I do it because I get to build community.
- 52:22[SPEAKER_00]: I do it because I get to make a little bit of money.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_00]: I do it because I love sports, but if any of those things ever don't work for me, I can walk away.
- 52:30[SPEAKER_00]: And I can do the Barry Sanders or the Megatron, and I can walk away on top of the game and know that I did a really good thing while I was there.
- 52:37[SPEAKER_00]: So again, just kind of a heartfelt into the episode today, you know, for our listeners about why we do what we do, the motivations that we have and, you know, we're going to keep moving forward and put now good content buying cards selling cards, you know, and having a good time in the process.
- 52:52[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, 100%.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that's, um, love, love what you're doing.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_02]: That I've mentioned that early in the year.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_02]: That was a big thing for me coming to this year.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll kind of end with this note, like, have that be the case for you in sports cars.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_02]: There's a reason you're here.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_02]: There's a reason you're doing it.
- 53:06[SPEAKER_02]: You know, love baseball or sure you do.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_02]: You enjoy the community part of it.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_02]: But I said it again.
- 53:12[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll say it.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_02]: Say it.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_02]: I'll say it again.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_02]: Making money in this hobby is what makes it fun.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_02]: Nobody comes to this space and loses 50 grand and goes, man, I have the time of my luck.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_02]: That was a nobody, no body is spending their money that should go to their mortgage, or they can't make their next credit card bill because they're addictive to score scars and saying, I'm having a ball.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_02]: That's not, that's not having a ball.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_02]: Having a ball is coming into this thing, having a plan, no one what you want out of this thing,
- 53:46[SPEAKER_02]: When you can, it doesn't mean you're going to make money on every single card you have because you will just just like hitting in baseball, but if you bet, if you get seven out of ten in sports cards, major doing really, really well.
- 53:57[SPEAKER_02]: If you're back, if you're doing, if you're doing nine out of ten, you're like a Hall of Famer in and sports cards.
- 54:03[SPEAKER_02]: And so to me, I think have fun with it, obviously, but come in knowing the goal.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, and just go knock it out and that's what we're here to try to help again on anybody that feels any any differently than that about what we're trying to do.
- 54:18[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry, but we're going to continue to bring conviction.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to continue to keep it real.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_02]: We share some of our failures.
- 54:24[SPEAKER_02]: We'll share more of them coming up.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_02]: I've about to sell some cards that are failures of mine that I'll openly get to discuss in some episodes.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_02]: Go and forward about as you as I sell some of these cards.
- 54:36[SPEAKER_02]: will bring up some memories of mine to get.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_02]: Wow, I did that wrong.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that'll make for a fun episode.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_02]: And to kind of share some of those things, we do plan to have arm coming back up coming on soon as well.
- 54:47[SPEAKER_02]: I've got a fun segment kind of a preview ahead there.
- 54:50[SPEAKER_02]: Probably might be next week, actually.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_02]: And then we've also got another player that is up in coming prospects going to be on the show, looking forward to having him on the show.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_02]: So just stay tuned the next several, two, three weeks.
- 55:03[SPEAKER_02]: You got some good stuff
- 55:04[SPEAKER_02]: I know today we just wanted to be real with you guys today again about this and we didn't go on the show today and some of you're going to be scratching your head into this episode going man what happened in the last 15 minutes with Hamm and Baba?
- 55:17[SPEAKER_02]: It was a little bit of a test this last week I think.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_02]: I think we got tested with what people.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_02]: a little bit and then up again, that's not the majority of the majority of y'all have been so amazing.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_02]: So great.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_02]: So just the feedback has been phenomenal.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_02]: But then when you get a little bit of that kind of chirping in your ear a little bit and you start to listen to it, it can affect you.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_02]: And so I just wanted to kind of put that to bed today on this episode and I think you did too and just kind of shared everybody just take the noise out, do this for yourself, have fun with it.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure.
- 55:52[SPEAKER_00]: I had a good, I had a good moment, um, you know, that ended off the weekend.
- 55:57[SPEAKER_00]: I forgot to share the story.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I should have, and I'll close the show with this.
- 56:00[SPEAKER_00]: We were at a local card show in Matthew and I, although we don't really buy those types of cards that are there anymore.
- 56:05[SPEAKER_00]: We still go because we want to support the community.
- 56:07[SPEAKER_00]: And you never know what you're running across.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_00]: And we ended up running into a kid who grew up in our neighborhood.
- 56:12[SPEAKER_00]: He now plays basketball at the cross town rival, you know, basketball gym.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_00]: He's a pretty good basketball player.
- 56:19[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, he's kind of got that swagger, you know, he's an upperclassman or whatever.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_00]: And he walked over to, you know, little Matt and I said, hey, hey, guys, I'm really doing this card thing.
- 56:28[SPEAKER_00]: Can y'all help me out?
- 56:29[SPEAKER_00]: And he broke out like four cards.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_00]: And he had like a Ted Roe McMillan and some other, I think a John Iran or something like that.
- 56:37[SPEAKER_00]: And we sat there and we comped all the cards with him.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_00]: We gave him the breakdown of sticker all those versus on card, all those or whatever.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_00]: And we told him a kind of a game plan or whatever.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_00]: There was a buying station there.
- 56:46[SPEAKER_00]: He went and he ended up messaging us on Instagram later.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_00]: And he sold his cards and I think he made a couple hundred bucks.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and he's like, hey, guys, I just wanted to say how much I really appreciate you guys helping me get into the hobby.
- 56:59[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the meaning getting a good first start.
- 57:02[SPEAKER_00]: And I looked at Lil Matt and I go, that's why I do this.
- 57:05[SPEAKER_00]: I do this because there are kids out there every day who if they're not knowledgeable and careful they'll get ripped off by people who aren't going to give them advice who aren't going to take the time and slow down with them who aren't going to go through the details I said I want a generation of kids like that who love this hobby because they're going to make money in it they're going to do well and they're going to be excited about it.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and I said, that's the thing that keeps me going.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's why I take an hour out of every week to do this podcast when I got 10,000 other things that I can be doing promise you.
- 57:39[SPEAKER_00]: So for those that do listen, for those that do care, for those that are being built up by this, thank you.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_00]: Appreciate you guys.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_00]: And as always, Bubba, brother, thank you for spending time of yours as well to dive into this.
- 57:51[SPEAKER_00]: So thank you guys for listening and tuning in to the SportsCard CEO.
- 57:55[SPEAKER_00]: We appreciate you all, and we'll be back next week.
